Here is a thread to discuss the girls' summer style 2003. Question #1: should I go for a light blue Adisas zip up or a light blue Fred Perry zip up? Question #2: What looks good with white and red soccer socks?

Mary (Mary), Monday, 21 April 2003 18:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Vicky got a lovely FP hoody in old school tracksuit material witha few vertical stripes in a deep red colour and the lining in the hood is white towelling, it rocks.

chris (chris), Monday, 21 April 2003 18:26 (twenty-two years ago)

1. adidas.
2. nothing. (take that how you will.)

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 21 April 2003 18:26 (twenty-two years ago)

>#2: What looks good with white and red soccer socks?

Girls 16 and under, exclusively.

fletrejet, Monday, 21 April 2003 18:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I think FR and I tried that one on at 99X in blue. It was nice.

Question #3: Are khaki golf shorts taking the movement to literally?

Mary (Mary), Monday, 21 April 2003 18:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Where do you live, flatrejet?

Mary (Mary), Monday, 21 April 2003 18:30 (twenty-two years ago)

nothing could take this style too literally and be a bad thing.

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 21 April 2003 18:34 (twenty-two years ago)

#4 white terry cloth kangol bucket hat versus as of yet undeterminded sun visor?

Mary (Mary), Monday, 21 April 2003 18:38 (twenty-two years ago)

we're getting into raver territory here now

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 21 April 2003 18:40 (twenty-two years ago)

haha i saw this thread and was going to post "mary to thread" but it was you that started it!

how about a 1970s blue and yello cycling top? perhaps i shall dig mine out

gareth (gareth), Monday, 21 April 2003 18:44 (twenty-two years ago)

man, I've got white and red soccer socks, remnants of my high school team days.

hstencil, Monday, 21 April 2003 18:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Question #1: should I go for a light blue Adisas zip up or a light blue Fred Perry zip up?

If either is velour or stretch terry, do not buy. Torch the goods, and if the store goes up as well, c'est la vie.

j.lu (j.lu), Monday, 21 April 2003 18:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I am in the US. Why?

fletrejet, Monday, 21 April 2003 18:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought she meant what U.S. state, as in "fifteen'll get ya' twenty."

felicity (felicity), Monday, 21 April 2003 18:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I was just wondering in what state, city, etc. one of such level minded highly informed political and fashion advice resides. Aka bc I am nosy:)
(Also I was hoping for some clause in which I could escape the over 16 rule, as I am doing with me white tennies today, thanks to Georgian Justice.)

Mary (Mary), Monday, 21 April 2003 19:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Confidential to j.lu: I am looking at polyester. Is your advice ecopolitcally or fashion minded?

Mary (Mary), Monday, 21 April 2003 19:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Cycling tops are too tight fit for me, that is to say, I haven't seen any turn up in Japanese magazines lately.

Mary (Mary), Monday, 21 April 2003 19:08 (twenty-two years ago)

hey Mary, your kind words re: my white jacket yesterday were just the self-confidence booster I needed pre-date! THanks!

hstencil, Monday, 21 April 2003 19:13 (twenty-two years ago)

my pleasure: you were rockin' the white zip up look -- i hope it proved effective!

Mary (Mary), Monday, 21 April 2003 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, more specifically Tampa, FL. I am completely unfashionable, which makes me a superior judge of fashion, because I am outside the fashion-community's groupthink, and therefore, not afraid to point out when people look ridiculous.

fletrejet, Monday, 21 April 2003 19:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Mary, well it was effective in that I didn't get laughed at.

hstencil, Monday, 21 April 2003 19:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Style-minded, although based on contrarian principles.

j.lu (j.lu), Monday, 21 April 2003 19:29 (twenty-two years ago)

The FP was nicer material but not in my size so I went for the Adidas warm-up. Also threw in a beige Adidas visor. Gave the soccer socks a miss (not ready yet) but picked up a couple of thin knee socks in grey and light blue.

Mary (Mary), Monday, 21 April 2003 21:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Question #2: What looks good with white and red soccer socks?
A guitar?

chris j (chris j), Monday, 21 April 2003 22:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Any suggestions on how to adapt girly sports style to Kentucky?
Horsy sports style?

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 01:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Question #1: should I go for a light blue Adisas zip up or a light blue Fred Perry zip up?

The light blue Adidas, because I had a light blue Adidas zip up from the seventies that was cruelly stolen from me! The new ones are not as lovely and can't replace it but they are still nice.

Nicole (Nicole), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 01:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah I went with the Adidas. It's not all that but should do for a summer jacket. Light blue is in the stores now if you can bear it.

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 01:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Visors are horrible. Don't get one, Mary.

rosemary (rosemary), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 01:31 (twenty-two years ago)

After reading the puma thread I would like a red one and the little red Puma bag. Unfortunately I don't think Adidas makes them in red.

Nicole (Nicole), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 01:39 (twenty-two years ago)

RM do keep up:) I already bought a khaki adidas visor.

Nicole, I think I may have seen a red one at the store today, but maybe it was white with red stripes. They also had the j.lu hated velour red.

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 01:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I am not down with this Georgian Justice.

rosemary (rosemary), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 01:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Rosemary next time I must bring you with me as my fashion consultant.

Nicole, you are in luck. Just checked the online store and the red superstar jacket is yours for the having.

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 01:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Yay fashion consulting!

Amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 02:22 (twenty-two years ago)

one vote for white terry cloth visor, hold the Kangol

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 02:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Nicole, you are in luck. Just checked the online store and the red superstar jacket is yours for the having.

Yay! Thanks Mary -- off I go to check out the online store.

Nicole (Nicole), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 11:08 (twenty-two years ago)

what material are these tops? my initial reaction would be to plump for adidas over fred perry. though i cant help but feel a dark brown/light brown combination would be even better.

what is wrong with velour? i like it

the visor is definitely a good thing, though i think the bucket hat has got good points too. you cannot go wrong with hats really

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 14:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Rowr!

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 14:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I covet the lunatic fringe of that girl in the middle of the front row

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 14:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Despite what Jerry just did up there, this thread makes me feel like a fifteen year old boy again.

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 14:19 (twenty-two years ago)

What looks good with white and red soccer socks? - Clogs!

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 17:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Mary, wait until you see my outfit for Buffython.

rosemary (rosemary), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 17:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Clogs don't look good with anything.

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 17:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I just have never really understood the appeal of clogs, they're like the Julia Roberts of shoes.

Nicole (Nicole), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 18:22 (twenty-two years ago)

ha ha gareth i already got the adidas one as i explained upthread:) it is polyester but feels satiny so covers the sports trend and the satin trend in one fell swoop. the fp was a nicer heavier material but a bit small for me.

#5 what goes with white tennis skirts? i have seen so far either light blue or hot pink tank tops. any other suggestions? accessories?

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 19:25 (twenty-two years ago)

a racquet, a can of fuschia Penn tennis balls, a gold chain and a tennis pro attractively draped over your shoulders, rowr

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 19:37 (twenty-two years ago)

A brown top goes with a tennis skirt, Mary.

I'm saying it to save us all from waiting for Gareth.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 19:40 (twenty-two years ago)

what goes with white tennis skirts?

Steffi, for one thing. Gabriela Sabatini too. Meghan Shaughnessy, ok. Chanda Rubin. what? oh. never mind.

(polo shirts of course. to the aforementioned pastels, i might add lime green, but i have a feeling that could be very wrong. black and tan.)

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 04:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh! You need that special tennis underwear, with the pocket in the back.

rosemary (rosemary), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 04:59 (twenty-two years ago)

What's the pocket for? And when it will it be warm enough to implement girls' summer style '03, rather than just talk about it?

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

tennis balls!

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 17:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, jel's right.

(I was trying to avoid saying "with the pocket for your balls".)

rosemary (rosemary), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 19:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, from my observations of ladies tennis, I have noticed that some have a grip device for storing tennis balls within their skirts.

(I totally can not make this sound right)

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 19:55 (twenty-two years ago)

So female tennis players don't just shove the spare tennis ball down their knickers, then?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 19:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I am going to implement gabbneb's suggestion of lime green shirt + white tennis skirt this Saturday.

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 19:59 (twenty-two years ago)

May I add that is is a used Fila shirt bought at Tokio 7 for $2?

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 20:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I found it in a baby carriage.

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 20:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Can we go to Tokio 7 on Saturday, Mary? I have never been.

rosemary (rosemary), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 23:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Er okay but I'm not sure it's your thing -- lots of brand whoredome...

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 24 April 2003 00:06 (twenty-two years ago)

gabbneb honored to be implemented on the Redwell Platform (but fears fluorescence)

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 24 April 2003 02:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I suppose being my tennis pro qua pullover is out of the question?

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 24 April 2003 02:16 (twenty-two years ago)

the b grade hockey team is tuff. they kick your shins.

ducklingmonster (ducklingmonster), Thursday, 24 April 2003 03:27 (twenty-two years ago)

if gabbneb = attractive tennis pro, then surely this is bizarro world

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 25 April 2003 03:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Are we ready for the Pringle revival?

http://www.onlinegolf.co.uk/ishop/images/4/STPI010L.jpg

Mary (Mary), Friday, 25 April 2003 03:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Can we go to Tokio 7 on Saturday, Mary? I have never been.

Tokio 7 is totally like my FAVORITE store. Though "Yu" in the Lower East Side is specially nice as well. They have lots of second hand Japanese stuff, and i got my favorite tie there.

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 25 April 2003 05:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I got my velcro Converse there (at Yu.) I think it may have moved though...

Mary (Mary), Friday, 25 April 2003 05:16 (twenty-two years ago)

maybe you could sport this tennis look?

http://www.lycra.com/Lycra/images/picts/news/serena.jpg
serena williams and her black catsuit.

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 25 April 2003 05:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I just read something about Yu and it's still on Ludlow after all; Rosemary, shall we honor the phil-two fire there on Sat.?

Mary (Mary), Friday, 25 April 2003 20:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Sure!

rosemary (rosemary), Friday, 25 April 2003 21:55 (twenty-two years ago)

The old Japanese woman at Yu is *the cutest*... and if you buy something, she wraps it up in pink crepe paper and puts it in the most darling homemade shopping bag. Buy something!

phil-two (phil-two), Saturday, 26 April 2003 04:16 (twenty-two years ago)

a black lycra catsuit, perhaps

phil-two (phil-two), Saturday, 26 April 2003 04:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Mary (Mary), Saturday, 26 April 2003 16:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Rosemary wasn't digging the girly sports style in Puma:(

Mary (Mary), Sunday, 27 April 2003 02:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Pringle goods are available on Spring street. They are so cute, but $$$. Nice crests.

So what did you get? photos please

phil-two (phil-two), Sunday, 27 April 2003 09:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Mary, I wasn't digging ALL THAT ORANGE. Puma had no girly colors!

rosemary (rosemary), Sunday, 27 April 2003 13:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I got a brown ringer T with Snoopy skateboarding, white sleeveless Paul Frank T with a navy anchor on it, light blue fishnets, royal blue fishnet kneehighs, and nautical-themed PF underwear. I almost got this Pringle labor whore light blue T with patches and badges all over it, which came with pins to stick on in case anyone missed the fact that it was Pringle, but R. wisely advised prudence.

Mary (Mary), Sunday, 27 April 2003 19:21 (twenty-two years ago)

"labor whore"?

You just made me realize that I bought some sew-on/iron-on patches at Alphabets last weekend but I think I might have thrown them away in the bag by accident.

felicity (felicity), Sunday, 27 April 2003 19:29 (twenty-two years ago)

my god Mary is that your faux Asian lisp?

felicity (felicity), Sunday, 27 April 2003 19:30 (twenty-two years ago)

What are the patches of?

Mary (Mary), Sunday, 27 April 2003 19:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Labor whore ha ha! That would be more of a Gareth stylee.

Mary (Mary), Sunday, 27 April 2003 19:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Where will you place them? RM and I almost made it to Alpahbets on the last leg of our PF search & destroy mission, but fizzled out on the LES.

Mary (Mary), Sunday, 27 April 2003 19:45 (twenty-two years ago)

In my dumpster, apparently.

felicity (felicity), Sunday, 27 April 2003 19:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a Hysteric Glamour panda patch that I have yet to afix to anything. Ditto a St. something or other Catholic girls school patch with a large cross on it.

Mary (Mary), Sunday, 27 April 2003 19:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Muscles are absolutely necessary to pull off this look.

Leee (Leee), Monday, 28 April 2003 00:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I hate muscles.

Mary (Mary), Monday, 28 April 2003 05:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Leee (Leee), Monday, 28 April 2003 15:44 (twenty-two years ago)

My coworkers reaction to today's outfit: "You look so sporty. You look like you're about to go play basketball." So maybe your pic has inspired me subconsciously Leeee.

Yes, where are the Pringles patches?

The PF are from Alphabets on Avenue A

If only I had kept my girl scouts patches. Maybe a visit to Chelsea flea markets this weekend.

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 15:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I really can't afford to keep shopping.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 15:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 15:48 (twenty-two years ago)

The Pringles patches come readymade attached to a shirt at Tatu on 55 Spring Street. When Rosemary and I saw the shirt we screamed Felicity. If you go there can you get me the extrememly overpriced pinkish cardigan with the Pringle crest? I will love you forever. F, check your JJ they are rockin' the Pringle tank patch style.

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 18:10 (twenty-two years ago)

oh yes, "JJ" is so the magazine for me. I love it, I took it to bed last night and I have with my in the office, like a little dolly.

I liked Mary's Snoopy shirt she was wearing yesterday.

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 18:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't hate your shirt felicity! jeez I'm saying all the wrong things today, aren't I? : (

hstencil, Wednesday, 30 April 2003 18:36 (twenty-two years ago)

You're such a prick, stence.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 18:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Well I assumed if you liked it you would have said so. That's okay. It is a hateful shirt. It is from the 19-"hate"-ies.

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 18:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I love hate though! I'd probably love your shirt. I told my mom about my quest to find a little-size Misfits shirt. She has bought me one with the Jem characters, the Misfits. It's aces!

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 18:44 (twenty-two years ago)

It's not nice to make me cry right before I have a meeting. Or any other time, really.

*sniff*

hstencil, Wednesday, 30 April 2003 18:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Speaking of girly sports style we need Sambas!!!

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 18:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Ally, did you get your soccer shoes yet? I called you from City Sports b/c you can buy one pair and get $20 off the second pair plus I have 10% off there and I would have bought you the Sambas for your birthday but I don't know your size.

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 1 May 2003 15:54 (twenty-two years ago)

As already noted, my cell phone doesn't work within the confines of my possibly deadly asbestos work building and did not receive the message until too late :( :(

BUT! Just in case the whole thread is wondering, I'm a girls size 10.

Shouldn't the title of this thread be inverted to "@*#&#&*#?"

Roman (Roman), Friday, 2 May 2003 06:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Felicity, I saw your PF patches at Alphabets -- they are mad cute. Have you sewn/ironed them onto your hippy style jeans yet?

(There's also really cute PF jewelry -- necklaces and bracelets on the other side of the store.)

What goes wrong when trying to approach Tatu/Tutu?

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 03:36 (twenty-two years ago)

What goes wrong when trying to approach Tatu/Tutu?

What goes wrong is you are being driven around NoLiTa in a Jetta by a mad Italian. Yo, where's the parking at?

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 14 July 2003 14:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Tell me your outfits! Or better yet, show me.

They seem to have gotten a whole truckload of Lady Adisas stuff marked down to $12-$14 at the Filene's Basement in the low 20s on Sixth Avenue.

I checked out the hot pink Islandia jacket at UO -- it is nice.

I'm all into the old-school/retro baseball logos terry strechy headband now. Mine is red white & blue 1970s White Sox, very Richie "The Baumer" Tennenbaum. I think it is from Modell's.

f.:

there is a danny clowes comic about Chicago (wrt: the "belushi-fication" of) that in one of the panels I think I remember has a guy sitting at a bar wearing that same exact headband.

haha, gygax! his was probably actually from the 1970s. Which Daniel Clowes comic was it -- not 8 ball?

felicity (felicity), Monday, 14 July 2003 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

it was in an old eightball yes.

Scream forth, thou of the early 80's! Only mouthwatering if your man is a fanatic.

Fall edition. Thinking of which football kit would be the most fashion forward: Manchester City would seem to go well with my eyes...

http://www.coresdofutebol.hpg.ig.com.br/ENG_Man_City_kit1_02_03.gif

Why are most of the good teams red? Dave B recommended Wimbledon and Matt DC Tottenham and Charlton but my faves so far are Man City, Man United, Liverpool, Arsenal, West Ham, Leeds. The colors I like: blue and green. Recs?

West Brom and Man City are the current favorites.

Ed (dali), Saturday, 13 September 2003 12:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Bristol Rovers! Actually, a less biased point of view: Brentford.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 13 September 2003 13:45 (twenty-two years ago)

not this morning

Ed (dali), Saturday, 13 September 2003 13:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I suspect this will change once they get to football football

Ed (dali), Saturday, 13 September 2003 13:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I decided against the Man City kit and the whole football shirt thing in general. Though it was lovely, shiny, and light blue, it had a giant ad across the chest saying FIRST ADVICE inside a balloon quotation.

On a related note, I can state that Carnaby St. has remade itself into ground zero for girly sport style/UK edition -- Ben Sherman, Lonsdale, Merc, and lots of other retro trad stylers that there wasn't enough time to investigate.

Mary (Mary), Monday, 15 September 2003 22:02 (twenty-two years ago)

turned off by the cynical commercialism of the English game.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 05:45 (twenty-two years ago)

looks like girly sports style has some competition

F# A# (∞), Tuesday, 16 October 2018 20:54 (seven years ago)

I noticed how many great athletic pants have been made for women recently.

Yerac, Tuesday, 16 October 2018 20:57 (seven years ago)

I also think it's funny how someone pointed out Serena's black catsuit 15 years ago.
