I'm going to be in London May 23-June 1st and I'd really love a chance to meet you all. At least for a portion of my visit, I'll be staying around the Maida Vale area. The 24th, 25th, and 26th won't be good days as I'll be seeing Radiohead the first two nights and Björk the last night at Shepherd's Bush Empire, and I'll probably be queueing rather early for both (are any of you going to these shows?). I've tacked on a few extra days to the trip to have a chance to relax and explore and meet people afterwards.

There are certain people I'd really love to meet (Kate, Suzy, Mark S, Martin, Marcello, etc...) and I'll leave it to you guys to figure out a day/time/place because I'd really like to be able to meet you all and I really know very little of London and planning is best not left up to me.

Any day from the 27th-30th would be great...

Also any tips on what to see/what to do/where to eat would be much appreciated...

Melissa W (Melissa W), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 23:37 (twenty-two years ago)

very cool. i hope you have a great time :)

ron (ron), Thursday, 1 May 2003 04:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll come to your London FAP, Melissa!

Go and eat at Limonia in Primrose Hill on a warm evening. Everyone likes Limonia. Then go and get a drink at the Russian place down the street.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Thursday, 1 May 2003 05:26 (twenty-two years ago)

What about a pic-nic. I was going to call for one anyway, but a pic nic on bank holiday weekend would be very good. Could still be Primrose hill, although I recon London fields has the best pub in a park, in case of rain.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 1 May 2003 06:09 (twenty-two years ago)

But there is no GRASS in London Fields. It's yucky. Primrose Hill has Limonia and it has the Queens. (The only place where I have ever seen my mum and Liam Gallagher in the same room.) That's where my vote for pic-nicing is!

kate, Thursday, 1 May 2003 07:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, and I also meant to say "Yay, Mel C! Can't wait to meet you!"

kate, Thursday, 1 May 2003 07:23 (twenty-two years ago)

(Heh heh, sorry that makes me giggle, the thought of an extra Spice Girl made of Caramel.)

kate, Thursday, 1 May 2003 07:24 (twenty-two years ago)

whoa cool! i'll be in london the week after

geeta, Thursday, 1 May 2003 07:27 (twenty-two years ago)

London Fields is a bit of a nightmare for lots of people to get to, though... proper Central London please. < /FAP rockist>

Although Primsrose Hill is probably fairly easy for most people... could this be THE Russian Bar?!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 1 May 2003 07:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Primrose Hill is not a nightmare to get to. You can walk there easily from Chalk Farm or Swiss Cottage. And the 31 bus goes right past it. As does the 274 Mad Bus, I think.

kate, Thursday, 1 May 2003 07:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I guess getting to London fiels is a problem but the inn on the park is such a nice pub.

Is the 274 the one that goes past the zoo? if not there's the zoo bus and a little walk aswell.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 1 May 2003 08:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Matt- what is THE Russian bar? Can I also point out that late May provides us with a wealth of visitors and excuses for a London FAP - Melissa, Carey, Cozen, and Nick Southall, all of whom I would love to meet, have mentioned they may be around! As a side note - I am LEAVING THE UK on June 9th, and while being mostly a shy, anti-social hermit, would love to put (silly) names to faces before I go.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Thursday, 1 May 2003 08:14 (twenty-two years ago)

We are going nowhere near THE Russian Bar. It is a terrifying place.

kate, Thursday, 1 May 2003 08:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Why? I like it!

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Thursday, 1 May 2003 08:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I've never been, but apparently it involves Russians dancing to trance in front of mirrors.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 1 May 2003 08:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Because I don't like that part of Kingsland Road. Especially not at night.

kate, Thursday, 1 May 2003 08:23 (twenty-two years ago)

the russian bar is the best! i expect we will be going after the acola bass rave finishes at 5 on sun morning. i didnt know you had been there kate, i didnt know any ilx people had crossed its delightful threshold!

sadly mel, i will not be able to come as i will be in america for the entirety of your trip

geeta, what is this of you being here? dates please!

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 1 May 2003 08:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I lived around the corner from it for nearly a year!

kate, Thursday, 1 May 2003 08:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Oops - forgot to of course mention GEETA in my list of reasons to celebrate. But now she gets her very own post!

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Thursday, 1 May 2003 08:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not sure you guys are all talking about the same Russian bar as me. Or does it have several different faces?

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Thursday, 1 May 2003 08:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Scary scary place with weird cartoon animals painted on the outside of it, on the Kingsland Road near the Canal.

There are other Russian Bars (Smersh in Hoxton springs to mind) but they are not THE Russian Bar. As far as I know, it is the latest-open bar in London. It's been thumping far later even than I've ever seen the Marathon in Chalk Farm.

kate, Thursday, 1 May 2003 09:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm going to that Björk gig too

j0e (j0e), Thursday, 1 May 2003 09:09 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, its yellow, and just next to the canal, opposite the mosque on kingsland rd. it is open later than anywhere i know in london, i mean, other than when mary came and it was after midnight and hadnt even opened yet, i havent arrived there earlier than 5am. it is nice place

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 1 May 2003 09:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll be in london too at that time for the same reason, from sat 24 to mon 26th, i'll be staying in bow.

leigh (leigh), Thursday, 1 May 2003 09:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Argh! I was so gonna see if I could organise a trip to London with an FAP for sometime in June; it's too busy here in May for me to have time off. This means I'm prob. gonna miss both Nordicskillz and Mel. Bugger.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 1 May 2003 09:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I am thinking of the one in Primrose Hill, down from Limonia. I think I know we're you're talking about.

I knew someone was going to mention The Marathon eventually - we went there to see that Rockabilly Elvis covers band and some people at the bar got pepper-sprayed full in the face by some lone nutter. I'm going to miss Camden. :0

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Thursday, 1 May 2003 09:17 (twenty-two years ago)

:( Nick.

Mel. Bugger = a wonderfully profane new ILX0r??

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Thursday, 1 May 2003 09:18 (twenty-two years ago)

marathon bar is terrible

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 1 May 2003 09:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Of course it's terrible. THat's part of the appeal.

kate, Thursday, 1 May 2003 09:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Mel, have a nice trip! Btw, did any of my predictions come true regrding things improving a bit, in April ? Let me know sometime.

Vic (Vic), Thursday, 1 May 2003 09:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I am out of the UK from 29th May to 16th June, but I'd love to meet any or all of y'all if that's possible!

Mark C (Mark C), Thursday, 1 May 2003 10:22 (twenty-two years ago)

the russian bar is called 'nu pogodi'. it bears the legend, 'russki disko bar' on it. i had a peek in the window once walking up the kingsland road once at 2 am. it looked scarily familiar...
funnily enough there is a 'russian club' over the road and towards shoreditch, but that seems to be in one of those houses set back from the road.

ambrose (ambrose), Thursday, 1 May 2003 12:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I am out of the UK from 29th May to 16th June, but I'd love to meet any or all of y'all if that's possible!

Where you going??

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 1 May 2003 13:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I used to live on Kingsland rd. Right beside the Geoffrey museum. I totally do not recall any canal or the Russian Room. There are going to be so many threads for London FAPS in the next month.

Carey (Carey), Thursday, 1 May 2003 13:29 (twenty-two years ago)

THE CANAL HAS BEEN THERE SINCE 1790 OR SOMETHING!!!

HOW CAN YOU DENY THE EXISTENCE OF THE CANAL?!?!?

kate, Thursday, 1 May 2003 13:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe in my reality/dimension it does not exist. Where is it exactly?

Carey (Carey), Thursday, 1 May 2003 13:32 (twenty-two years ago)

kingsland road crosses the canal abt six streets up from the geffrye (dunston rd to be exact)

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 1 May 2003 13:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmmmm, I've gone up to Dalston several times. No clue.
Ummmm oh yeah, THAT canal. Uh huh. I totally knew what you were talking about the whole time. With the water and... the water and the Russian Room and... Dawson.

Carey (Carey), Thursday, 1 May 2003 13:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Mark C is coming to Denver. And so is Jerry the Nipper! AT THE SAME TIME, PRACTICALLY!

Mandee, Thursday, 1 May 2003 13:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I think JtN should turn into a rough, gruff mountain man and grow a Grizzly Adams style beard, and then the Pinefox will have to visit America to reclaim him.

"Gadzooks, sir, why have you let this facial ornamentation consume your very being? It is not RIGHT."

"GolDANG, Pinefox, I'm jest goin' native."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 1 May 2003 13:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Yup - Jerry and I are doing this whole weird sitcom-style flatmates-in-London-both-dating-girls-in-Denver thing PROPERLY! The gall bladder thing is where I get really amazed, though.

I meant I'd love to meet whoever's in London.

Mark C (Mark C), Thursday, 1 May 2003 14:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Jerry and I are doing this whole weird sitcom-style flatmates-in-London-both-dating-girls-in-Denver thing PROPERLY!

Your show should have Bosom Buddies influenced intro.

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 1 May 2003 14:03 (twenty-two years ago)

(ps can i just celebrate the WORST PINEFOX IMITATION EVER)

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 1 May 2003 14:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned is to Pinefox as Dickens is to women.

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 1 May 2003 14:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a role! A place in life!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 1 May 2003 14:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Mayday!

the pinefox, Thursday, 1 May 2003 14:35 (twenty-two years ago)

the JtN was spot on, tho'.

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 1 May 2003 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, it was terrifyingly accurate. It was like he was HERE.

Mandee, Thursday, 1 May 2003 14:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Is my glass half empty or half full?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 1 May 2003 14:40 (twenty-two years ago)

runnething over.

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 1 May 2003 14:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll be in London at this time too! Wow! Y'all decide FAP dates, and I'll probably be free.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 1 May 2003 14:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Mmm...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 1 May 2003 14:49 (twenty-two years ago)

you coming over ned?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 1 May 2003 15:02 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, when's Ned gonna be in town?

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 1 May 2003 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)

He's like the Ghostbusters, if you call him he'll come over.

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 1 May 2003 15:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Or say my name three times or whatever. I would love to come over for that but GarethFAP is happening here and all. Right now the soonest I'll be able to come over will be October for the Tom marriage fun party.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 1 May 2003 15:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I am still frightened that Ned is going to try to break up the wedding.

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 1 May 2003 15:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey now, that's not even fun to joke about! I would NEVER do that. Isabel is one of my favorite people ever I've never spoken to ever. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 1 May 2003 15:24 (twenty-two years ago)

You're going to continue to deny your love?

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 1 May 2003 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

But Tom is sometimes in the possession of Beard. That takes a stronger love than mine.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 1 May 2003 15:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Watch what you say about beards! Some of them can be NICE!!!

I can't believe I just said that. I must be in love. I feel ill.

kate, Thursday, 1 May 2003 15:30 (twenty-two years ago)

But Tom is sometimes in the possession of Beard.

But surely your Hair cancels that out? With his Beard and your Hair you crazy kids could take over the world.

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 1 May 2003 15:32 (twenty-two years ago)

who is nick cave?

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 1 May 2003 15:32 (twenty-two years ago)

But my Hair is good and holy! It channels messages from the spirits and, in the absence of the Lost Ark of the Covenant, acts as a relic.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 1 May 2003 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I wasn't saying it was a bad thing, silly!

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 1 May 2003 15:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned has let it out now! He think's Tom's beard is evil, and his hair is all that is good! It's an eternal struggle.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 1 May 2003 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I wasn't saying it was a bad thing, silly!

Ah, now this is true. :-) Ned the Poor Reader.

It's an eternal struggle.

Hair should be for the top of the skull, not the lower part.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 1 May 2003 15:46 (twenty-two years ago)

or the SIDES, eh?

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 1 May 2003 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Precisely, RJG! Eurgh!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 1 May 2003 15:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I too will be in London that weekend! I had intended to speak to some of you from the other interweb hang-out to find out who is around and what could be done. I have nowhere to stay yet - I am flying back in from Seville on the morning of the 24th and since it is a bank holiday thought it might be F!U!N! to stay in London and say hello to folk.

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 1 May 2003 16:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey thanks Melissa! :-) I'll be coming...

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 1 May 2003 16:48 (twenty-two years ago)

If any of you want to send me your mobile numbers, that'd be cool...

Melissa W (Melissa W), Friday, 2 May 2003 03:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I would love love love to meet Melissa (and I am very honoured to be someone you're keen to meet) and Geeta, and all the others who are visiting us. Lots of FAPs and stuff please, not just one evening meeting.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 2 May 2003 16:35 (twenty-two years ago)

revive!

The 27th for both melissa and cozen!

oh yes! one evening meeting for all! oh yes!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 10 May 2003 09:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Yep, 27th should be OK for me.

Marcello Carlin, Saturday, 10 May 2003 09:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey Melissa, why don't we ditch this lot?

Cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 10 May 2003 09:38 (twenty-two years ago)

:...-(

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 10 May 2003 09:39 (twenty-two years ago)

27th should be fine, yeah. I want Starry Sarah to come too!

Melissa W (Melissa W), Saturday, 10 May 2003 09:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey Starry, why don't we ditch this lot?

Cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 10 May 2003 09:40 (twenty-two years ago)

:.............-((((((

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 10 May 2003 09:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I can do the 27th. There's a big plus for you all.

Mark C (Mark C), Saturday, 10 May 2003 09:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm keen to meet both of you - I will try to stand the excitement of both in one night!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 10 May 2003 09:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not too exciting. Though I can turn my ears inside out.

Cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 10 May 2003 09:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I talk rubbish and then go silent for varying time periods.

So, is it May 27th?

When is Geeta coming to London?

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 10 May 2003 11:16 (twenty-two years ago)

In june (that's what she told me so that will prob be the june FAP).

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 10 May 2003 11:19 (twenty-two years ago)

27th

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Saturday, 10 May 2003 13:40 (twenty-two years ago)

*bump*

Cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 10:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll be along to this as well, then (I have a job now). Where is it, exactly?

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 10:26 (twenty-two years ago)

27th May is PAYDAY! I'll be there!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 11:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Depending on wherever 'there' is, of course.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 11:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I can make this - Mel do you still want that Uncut magazine?

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 11:05 (twenty-two years ago)

27th? So that's next Tuesday? OK I can do that!

Oh hold on - June 27th?? Mel I am going to mail you my sodding mobile number just in case anyway. You may also wish to know I have an ITCHY BACK. Arrgh!

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 11:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, I hate itchy backs.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 11:10 (twenty-two years ago)

So...where are we going? Let's go somewhere actually GOOD.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 11:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Wait, Cozen - can you make this or no?

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 11:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Pakenham Arms?

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 11:12 (twenty-two years ago)

The Black Horse in Colindale!

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 11:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Quaglino's!

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 11:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Browns! China White!

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 11:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Come to Croydon! We have Nando's!

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 11:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Also - All Bar One! Yates'! Tiger Tiger! Noodle Time (No Need To Book, Plenty Of Room)!

Croydon - It Is Great, Plus I Only Need To Take One Bus To Get There!

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 11:18 (twenty-two years ago)

i like Croydon - trams, Doughmasters, clock tower cinema, j0e lives there...

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 11:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I could fancy a Nando's, actually...

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 11:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Melissa would like The Hippodrome. After an England game.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 11:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Teh Pakenham Arms is Radiohead favourite pub in London.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 11:22 (twenty-two years ago)

And quite near Russel Sq eh? I think a nice ISLINGTON beer would be good! Where is Melissa staying though?

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 11:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Teh Pakenham Arms is Radiohead favourite pub in London.

This has so many potentially amusing connotations that I don't know where to start...

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 11:46 (twenty-two years ago)

The Pakenham arms is full of lairy posties, if you mean the one near Mount Pleasant.

chris (chris), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 11:51 (twenty-two years ago)

The Pakenham Arms looks a bit of alright, actually

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 11:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Phwoar!

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 11:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Well I like it. Posties should be in bed by six.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 11:59 (twenty-two years ago)

The Pakenham Arms is indeed full of Mount Pleasant posties but is, luckily, about five minutes' walk from our flat.

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 12:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Is it not bright yellow now? or am i suffering from false memory syndrome again? It gets rammed when there's footie on. And it's not as good as the apple tree.

chris (chris), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 12:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it is yellow now, but the Apple Tree is a good call too. Key point is that there aint no footie.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 12:14 (twenty-two years ago)

The Apple Tree is open until 1.00. PH34R!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 12:17 (twenty-two years ago)

B-but FAP? Smiths surely?

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 12:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Also that area = not simple for our guests to find or get back from (though it suits me obv., being nearer to the Centre of London than our usual West End spots).

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 12:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Greene King, Tim, and 80 shilling!

chris (chris), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 12:20 (twenty-two years ago)

80 Bob + schoolnight = sulky me

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 12:22 (twenty-two years ago)

80 Shilling = mmmmmm, yes!

RickyT (RickyT), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 12:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't guarantee it as a guest beer in a months time though kids

chris (chris), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 12:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I believe melissa is staying in kate's room so apple tree is ideal.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 12:32 (twenty-two years ago)

80's not on at the minute, I think it's broadside or something.

Apple tree have nicer vibe than the packenham, which will still be full of posties. I never feel as comfortable in the packenham as I do in the apple tree. Apple tree is flexible to get to, as you can walk from KX or Farringdon in 10 mins, and chancery lane in 5 mins, and the 38, 19, 55 243, 341, 63, 45, 46, 17 go very close.

Oh my God, a FAP within 1 minute of my workplace?! Too good to be true!

Vicky (Vicky), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 13:10 (twenty-two years ago)

This is next Tuesday isn't it? Apple Tree and all.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 14:18 (twenty-two years ago)

One minute? It's about 15 seconds, and that's if you're strolling!

Mark C (Mark C), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 15:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I will be there.

Cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 16:16 (twenty-two years ago)

kinda far out for me (and my tube hate), will try to be there.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey there all... I'd still love to do the 27th, but there's a very very very tiny chance that I may be going to see Radiohead at Later with Jools Holland that day. I'll keep you all updated, I just don't know yet (it depends upon if I win tickets, unless some of you have a hot Jools Holland connection and can get me one).

Melissa W (Melissa W), Thursday, 22 May 2003 07:08 (twenty-two years ago)

starry you have caused MUCH CONFUSION by mentioning june up there (at least in my head anyway).

so this is next week then? i like the apple tree.

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Thursday, 22 May 2003 07:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't blame me Steve, blame Julio, he's the one banging on abt June... next Tuesday @ the Apple Tree then?

Sarah (starry), Thursday, 22 May 2003 08:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Turns out, I won't be able to make it to Londres :(

Cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 22 May 2003 08:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Can I be the first to suggest that even if BOTH our guests can't now make it we go ahead and have a beer anyway?

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 22 May 2003 09:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Can I safely assume we're all agreed on the Apple Tree? I've never been, and it looks splendiferous.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 22 May 2003 09:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Aw no Cozen, why??

Sarah (starry), Thursday, 22 May 2003 09:09 (twenty-two years ago)

As I said in my e-mail to Marcello: "money wrangles, family politics, hush hush wink slpat urgh bugger: no Sunday, no Monday, no FAP" no FUT... err.

Cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 22 May 2003 09:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, apple tree it is, I'll be there incredibly early, 5.30 and 15 secs.

If anyone requires more detailed directions I'll be glad to help.

Vicky (Vicky), Thursday, 22 May 2003 09:32 (twenty-two years ago)

The Apple tree is at coordinates 51:31:24N, 0:06:44W

Alternatively there is a map here.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 22 May 2003 09:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Yay! 2 Minutes from my work. Woohoo!

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 22 May 2003 09:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Strewth!

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 22 May 2003 09:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Fair dinkum?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 22 May 2003 09:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll be late due to School, but I'll be there.

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 22 May 2003 09:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Oooooh, that map's got my workplace marked on it!

If you want to find the pub on the map, look at the Mount pleasant mail centre, in the bottom corner is the archive, and the pub is on the corner diagonally opposite there.

Vicky (Vicky), Thursday, 22 May 2003 09:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Ohhhh I have just remembered I actually DO have a prior commitment I agreed to go to AGES ago in Islington on the 27th - Mel, be in touch if you can come or not and if so I will turn up early doors for a bit ARGH ARGH I can't believe I forgot all about the TM pints ARGH ARGH panic... Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 22 May 2003 10:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Except she's said that it might not be till july now.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 22 May 2003 10:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Starry, can you bring my CD?

Mark C (Mark C), Thursday, 22 May 2003 10:43 (twenty-two years ago)

haha ok ed.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 22 May 2003 10:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm sorry Cozen can't come down now. Melissa, if you can't make the Tuesday FAP, PLEASE propose another time, as I don't want to miss out on meeting you.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 22 May 2003 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I will have to make an appearance at this to give Julio his tape and him my copy of NNY, but probably won't stay around as neither C nor M are definites.

Marcello Carlin, Sunday, 25 May 2003 13:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Any word from Melissa on this as yet?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 25 May 2003 18:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Lots of us are going even though we've had no confirmation from Melissa. It'll be very disappointing if she doesn't show, but a good FAP can be had anyway, one hopes.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 26 May 2003 21:13 (twenty-two years ago)

i walked past SHepherds Bush Empire yesterday evening and while a crowd of people was gathering for the Radiohead gig, it seemed that there was a much bigger queue to get into the adjacent Walkabout aussie bar...unless they'd got confused and joined the wrong queue - it was still a bit early tho but maybe i saw Melissa as i walked past :)

stevem (blueski), Monday, 26 May 2003 21:16 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm off to cambridge now to teach all day, but i'll be along at about 7 i hope, gagging for a pint...

toby (tsg20), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 04:59 (twenty-two years ago)

In case I don't make it along tonight, here's a present for Melissa. And Julio.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 07:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 07:41 (twenty-two years ago)

i like that, it's funny...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 07:47 (twenty-two years ago)

If you read his lips carefully you'll see that he's saying "Radiohead are going to release another album"

chris (chris), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 07:59 (twenty-two years ago)

arf, arf, arf...

oh boy, i am currently torn 'tween QNI and BOUZE as i'm feeling a little tired this morning, but i'm sure bouze will be the winner :)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 08:01 (twenty-two years ago)

bouze! despite having to get up ridiculous;y early tomorrow morning to get a train up to a conference.

chris (chris), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 08:04 (twenty-two years ago)

is this still the apple tree?

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 09:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Is it the apple tree or the pakenham arms? (or are they the same)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 09:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Apple tree, I do believe

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 09:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Apple Tree. Though people are free to try a pint in the Pakenham for comparative purposes.

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 09:18 (twenty-two years ago)

which road is the apple tree? (I can't read that map)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 09:20 (twenty-two years ago)

it's on the corner of Mount Pleasant, Warner Street and Phoenix Place.

Vicky (Vicky), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 09:26 (twenty-two years ago)

thanks.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 09:27 (twenty-two years ago)

very easy to get to from Farringdon, just walk up Farringdon road and then do a left before the Grauniad building, then do a right and at the end of the road just past the bridge you can see the apple tree.

chris (chris), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 09:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Chris's directions might not be the easiest to follow!

Walk up Farringdon Road, then turn left at the Printworkers (whetherspoons but on the corner) Ray Street, when you get to the next pub on the right (can't remember the name, sorry) turn right into Warner street, then carry on down there, under the bridge, and it's on your left.

Coming from the other direction, from Grey's Inn Road, you can either go down the slightly dodgy Mount Pleasant, or down Elm Street, which turns into Mount Pleasant, and it's on your right hand side, in the dip.

Vicky (Vicky), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 09:43 (twenty-two years ago)

As I said before, I'll be there relatively early, even after going shoe shopping, as I should be finishing work at 4.30. So I'll be back in there at around 5.30 onwards. Unless anyone else is going to get there ridiculously early... in which case I could go straight from work.

Vicky (Vicky), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 09:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll be there at any time between 6-7.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 09:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll be there around quarter to six, I expect.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 10:24 (twenty-two years ago)

5.30-5.45ish depending how long it takes me to get a 38/19 (although i could prolly walk in about ten mins i suppose, but there is a bit of a hill...)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 10:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll be there aboot 8:30 after finding out about the cultural signifacance of non buried dead bodies in cinema (with reference to Death By Hanging, Guelwaar and Weekend At Bernies).

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 10:37 (twenty-two years ago)

i work close but i may also have to work a bit late-ish, i don't know yet (clue: i have not yet left home!!)

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 10:44 (twenty-two years ago)

About half seven I reckon.

Anna (Anna), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 12:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Julio, you emailed me details of the Pakenham Arms rather than the Apple Tree! Which one is the FAP happening? At?

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 27 May 2003 13:18 (twenty-two years ago)

The Apple Tree.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 13:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Ta.

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 27 May 2003 13:20 (twenty-two years ago)

sorry marcello. the directions are given here.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 13:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey I'm in Shepherd's Bush right now. How do I get to the Apple Tree, keeping in mind that I'm public transportation illiterate? I tried to get into Jools with no luck.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 13:58 (twenty-two years ago)

get a hammersmith and city line (the pink one) to Farringdon. Or a Piccadily line (dark blue to Kings Cross (the follow directions posted above.

Dave B (daveb), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 14:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Hammersmith and city all the way round to Farringdon then follow Vicky's instructions upthread, it's not the quickest, but it's most likely the easiest.

chris (chris), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 14:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Did you see the way they deliberately put Shepherds Bush on the Tube Map twice, just to be as confusing as possible?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 14:06 (twenty-two years ago)

How much by cab?

Melissa in London, Tuesday, 27 May 2003 14:07 (twenty-two years ago)

melissa did u get my mob no.?

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 14:10 (twenty-two years ago)

£20-ish by cab. £2.00 by tube. If you really want, get the tube and then get a cab from Farringdon.

Matt, it is on twice cos they are actually different stations. You have to get out and walk between the two of them.

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 14:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Too much!

Vicky (Vicky), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 14:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Cab is likely to be upwards of £20 I'd have thought (though I don't take cabs so that may be way off...it's unlikely to be much cheaper but it might be way more). If you're worried about the bit at the end you'd be much better getting the Central Line to Chancery Lane and hailing a cab there.

Matt: yes they should have thought of another name for one of the stations (e.g. calling the Central Line one Shepherds Bush Green).

Tim (Tim), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 14:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I just really really really don't know how to use public transportation.

Melissa in London, Tuesday, 27 May 2003 14:13 (twenty-two years ago)

hobs lane!!

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 14:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't get the circle and hammersmith, there are delays. Get the central line to Chancery lane. You want to go left when you get out the barriers, and then take the left hand exit. When you get to street level, go right and then take the immediate left, it should be Grey's Inn Rd. Walk up, past argos, cross over at the zebra crossing, continue straight on, until you get to the cross roads. Go straight across, then after the bag shop on your right hand side, there's an small road, that's Mount pleasant, go down there, follow the round round and down the hill, and eventually the apple tree will be on your right hand side.

Vicky (Vicky), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 14:17 (twenty-two years ago)

well think of it as a learning experience then :)

also if you ask one of the nice people in the blue uniforms at the station, they will help you.

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 14:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm already more confused than you could possibly comprehend.

Melissa in London, Tuesday, 27 May 2003 14:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Get the red line as far west as Chancery Lane, then just follow Vicky's directions, you should be fine.

But yes, the little blue people are wonderful.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 14:22 (twenty-two years ago)

When I first came to london flat hunting I walked from the British Museum to South kensington because I went to the tube station and got scared and couldn't face it, and I couldn't afford a taxi.

It's fairly simple, the staff should be helpful, and there's only one line at the central line station, so it shouldn't be too complicated, unlike going to somewhere like kings cross.

Vicky (Vicky), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 14:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Melissa type people: Hmmm. Get a cab.

Non Melissa people: get text alerts on your mobile to decide which route to take if you have several choob lines to choose from. I am not spamming BTW. I am enthused.

Dave B (daveb), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 14:23 (twenty-two years ago)

The problem with this being the mobiles don't work on the Underground.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 14:25 (twenty-two years ago)

If you go to Shepherds Bush tube station (it's on the North East corner of Shepherds Bush Green) and ask one of the staff for some help, they'll explain it all. You need to buy a ticket to Chancery Lane, go to the platform labelled Eastbound and get on the train until it reaches Chancery Lane. Get back to street lavel and follow Vicky's directions or get a cab which shouldn't be more than £3. There's nothing ot be afraid of, honest!

Tim (Tim), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 14:26 (twenty-two years ago)

ACK MELISSA DO NOT LISTEN TO ME I DON'T KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN EAST AND WEST AND AM A FULE.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 14:26 (twenty-two years ago)

melissa have you anyone's mobile no. who will be going tonight?

(i am trying to work out how to persuade mine to inform me what it is! anyone reading who has it plz text me w.it - i will email you when i work it out)

(ie plz don't post it u wagZoRz)

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 14:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Melissa: this is what I'd do; pub is five minutes from my flat, walking SLOWLY. Take Central Line from Shepherd's Bush to Chancery Lane. Exit Chancery Lane using exits to Gray's Inn Road. Walk north on right-hand side of street until you reach a Pret a Manger on the corner. This is the junction with Clerkenwell Road. Get your bearings and cross to the far side of the street with the newsagent and Top Nosh café on the corner. The road forking between Clerkenwell Road and Gray's Inn Road, with big shady trees, is Rosebery Avenue. Turn right and walk down Rosebery Avenue and take the first left, Laystall Street. Walk down Laystall Street for about a block until you run in to Mount Pleasant. Go right on Mount Pleasant, pub is on corner on the right-hand side of road at the junction of Warner Street, past recycling bins, just after a series of really pretty Georgian buildings on same side of road.

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 14:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I went to the fancy a pint webpage:

The Apple Tree

address: 45 Mount Pleasant
WC1X 0AE
location: Clerkenwell
phone: 020 7837 2365

How to get there:
nearest tube(s):
Farringdon
Chancery Lane

how to find it:
From Farringdon, turn right out of the station, walk up Farringdon Road to Mount Pleasant (the junction with Roseberry Avenue). Cross Roseberry Avenue then turn left, walk down the road towards the pointy building (you'll know what we mean when you see it) in front of you, take the right hand side of it (Mount Pleasant) and you'll soon see the pub down the hill on the left. From Chancery Lane, walk up Gray's Inn Road to the junction with Roseberry Avenue, turn right and walk up Roseberry Avenue until you get to the pointy building on your left. Follow the instructions above.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 14:29 (twenty-two years ago)

haha sorry suzy posted the directions. and its bettah too!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 14:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Melissa should just go to the Shepherd's Bush station she is closest to and follow the appropriate set of instructions. Ed and I are both coming to the FAP later, say seventhirtyish because both of us are dog-tired from being on site of story I was dooing for the Independent yesterday. PHEAR our sunburn! Double-PHEAR my extremely sloppy hair dyeing efforts!

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 14:35 (twenty-two years ago)

(melissa i just emailed u my mobile no to the address yr posting on)

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 14:38 (twenty-two years ago)

(melissa buy an A-Z or a Nicholson at yr nearest newsagent, then london is solved forever)

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 14:40 (twenty-two years ago)

excellent piece of advice!

Vicky (Vicky), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 14:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I 80% likely won't be coming now - sorry Melissa if I don't make it, hope everyone has a great time.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 14:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I won't be staying long I must admit, I have things to prepare before my horribly early start tomorrow.

chris (chris), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 14:43 (twenty-two years ago)

''(melissa buy an A-Z or a Nicholson at yr nearest newsagent, then london is solved forever)''

A-Z are rub! just know the name of the street and the nearest tube station of the place you want to get to and then ask around. works for me!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 14:44 (twenty-two years ago)

"address yr posting on" = aol.com btw

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 14:44 (twenty-two years ago)

ignore julio he is insane

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 14:49 (twenty-two years ago)

If you ask London people directions they will 95% be nice and tell you. (2% will be rude, 2% will be nice but not know where it is and 1% will be nice but not know where it is but give you directions anyway which have a 25% likelyhood of being accidentally right).

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 14:54 (twenty-two years ago)

you have to use some gut instict in London bcz this city is fucked up. So you ask around and then you walk around and if you think you are losing yr way then ask someone else. you will eventually find it.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 15:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Ignore Julio he is insane.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 15:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Come on, its not as if we speak a different language.

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)

sp "langwidge"

Sarah (starry), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 15:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm insane but you all luv me! am i right or am i right?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 15:16 (twenty-two years ago)

You are absolutely right. This is exactly what I do in London and I always get to where I need to go.

Carey (Carey), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 15:20 (twenty-two years ago)

pah i am waiting for the FUCKING STUPID WASTE-OF-SPACE PRINTER TO GET ITS FUCKING ARSE IN GEAR

it is doing pages at the rate of one every ten mins today (absolutely literally the last three) and i have about 25 more to run out

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I will be there whenever the chuff I get out of Woolwich...

Sarah (starry), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 15:23 (twenty-two years ago)

and if you turn in the wrong street so what? you might find a really nice bookshop, say (but of course you won't stay there long to check it out, you'll ask someone abt where you want to get to but you can remember it for next time).

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 15:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Unless you end up in that street in Harry Potter where some silly japes witha wizards hat and a magic wand will no doubt happen.

(I don't think Melissa is reading any more.)

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 15:29 (twenty-two years ago)

oh I'm just rambling (waiting for this sonicator over there in the corner to finish cleaning my glass slides so I can go off to join you all in a bit).

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 15:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Melissa, let us know you're okay! We missed you tonight, but a good FAP was had nonetheless. (And if you are around any longer, I'd still love to meet you - if you're in the city centre around lunchtime in the next day or two, give me a call on my mobile number, which I sent you a while back if you fancy a quick meeting during my lunch break! (Not lunch beak, as I just typed. I'm not sure what a lunch beak is, but I have none.)

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 21:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Melissa called and wants you to know that she managed to get into Jools Holland tonight. She's sorry she missed you.

Heather (Heather), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 22:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Julio - is a sonicator the same as an ultrasonic bath?

I will be FAP-crazy after thee exams (less than 2 weeks to go!!)

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 07:43 (twenty-two years ago)

yes it is doctor!

(what are yr exams on BTW?)

'when there's a will there's a way' but the FAP was good (and 'Family affair' is a classic: a thrill to hear great improv on record).

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 08:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Shame we didn't get to meet Melissa, although I think a good night was had by all nonetheless and it was a pretty decent turnout as well.

Sorry if I was a bit subdued, but this was probably due to a complete lack of sleep over the weekend. I feel quite bouncy now though thanks to leaving at a reasonably sensible time and drinking mostly piss-weak lager all night.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 08:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Blimey when did they become 'sonicators'? When I were a lad we called it t'ultrasonic bath. Mind you we only had 5 elements int' periodic table in them days.

Exams - are in marketing.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 09:18 (twenty-two years ago)

heh. well they can be called both. I just call it a sonicator (I picked it up bcz someone calls it like that)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 09:25 (twenty-two years ago)

More importantly - why is Planet Of The Apes right wing.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 09:31 (twenty-two years ago)

you can't ask everyone else pete, you have to say "PLANET OV THE APES IS RIGHT WING AND THIS IS WHY:" it was your (blatantly incorrect ;)) statement...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 09:56 (twenty-two years ago)

It struck me on the way home, Planet Of The Apes is right wing for nearly exactly the same reasons that The Omega Man is. Chuck Heston is The Last Man, surrounded by a sea of seemingly intelligent but inferior creatures. It is the triumph of individual freedom (and violence natch) over the masses, the filthy immigrant monkey hordes. (this bit is esp., clever because once we find out it is the US the monkeys are by defn immigrants cos there are no monkeys native to the US). Hence the sink into barbarism that egalitarian democracy = end ov world.

Plus the previous noted racism vis a vis the skin colour of apes denoting aggression and primitivism. That said, the smart apes are still not as smart as a human scientist (as proven by lack of decent ray guns, fashion).

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 10:11 (twenty-two years ago)

national raygun assocn

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 10:31 (twenty-two years ago)

yes, i'll give you the racism, but i'm still not convinced that it's *that* right wing, i suppose assuming the final image of the film is conveying the MAIN THEME of the whole piece is a little naive of me. Plus the discussion we had last nite, re: you b*stards you let the commies win/blow up ameriky type reading of the end...

also shouldn't you be on a plane to spane by now?

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 10:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh shit, I forgot I was supposed to be on a plane to spane.

Quick, to the Baranmobile. (Actually Quick - To Ver Thameslink Via A Secondhand Bookshop. You'll not hear of my likes round here for a week).

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 10:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Hooray!

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 13:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Hahaha remember when I made that "hooray" joke? Boy that was funny.

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 13:05 (twenty-two years ago)

< oscar speech>

Thanks to everyone I met in London - you were all extremely nice and made a lost boy feel welcome ("London has opened my eyes".) Tim Hopkins, we have a mighty conflict of aesthetics I think but yr still a really funny conversational maestro (Birmingham: A Defensible City), Martin "28" Skidmore without whom I would have been floundering, RickyT, Mark C (how are yr ribs?), Dave Boyle (see 'conflict of aesthetics' above fr my Wimbledon hatred :) but a finer crosser of the ball you won't find on ilx and really pleasant company (wrong about Short Rounds though), William Swygart (extremely formal way of speech and a fountain of arcane footballing knowledge, trim/buff hairdo too), Sarah (said 'chuff' out loud; gothshagger general hem HEM), Liz, Marianna, Dave's pal (Simon?), POY in the park (!!!), overhead kicks, Ken Chu (he has posted here), the estimable David Kitchen, ethan padgett, David Toop, Short Rounds, Kieran Culkin, your God, (not my God).

Cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 18:03 (twenty-two years ago)

That all means I had a lovely time and have you people to thank, thanks.

I think maybe I've realised (I realised?), like Man City under Keegan, I've gone as far under ilx as I probably possibly can and it may be holding me back now (though from what I don't know).

Cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 18:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I regret my ill-measured (un-measured?) "the Clash are shit" comment, but, ha, they are though, really.

Cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 18:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey guys, I'm really sorry I didn't come. I was walking to get a cab to the pub, and I decided to make the extra half minute's walk to the BBC tv centre just to try one last time to get a ticket for Jools. As luck would have it, the second guy I asked had a spare. No way was I turning it down. Had an absolutely fantastic time. Watch for me next week. I'm the only one rocking out like a dork. Front row, Jonny's side, wearing a kimono-looking shirt.

Melissa in London, Wednesday, 28 May 2003 19:02 (twenty-two years ago)

erm, OK. The sound can be turned down ;)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 29 May 2003 07:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I am not sure if I approve of this reputation I appear to be getting.

NB sp "poi" :) You may note I did not join in. Tim yet again got out the laser sighted hammer with the "in my day that was called circus skills and THAT'S WHERE THEY SHOULD STAY" comment. Fab to meet you Cozen but only sorry we didn't get to talk much especially as I had a whole rant about the SODDING WATER TEMPLE all lined up. How long did you lot stay in the pub for after we left on an urgent Scrabble mission? I am not usually that tired (or a dork) I sa.

Sarah (starry), Thursday, 29 May 2003 08:15 (twenty-two years ago)

left the pub at abaht 10:15 where we got the tube and Cozen tried to text a mate on the Northern Line. Bless ;-)

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 29 May 2003 08:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Stupid underground.

Cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 29 May 2003 10:10 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
I'm thinking of flying to London on the 26th and staying for 4 nights as kind of a last minute impulse thing (there's a Radiohead-related event, as usual, Sunday and Monday night at the Royal Festival Hall). Now, I really can't afford this at all, but I think I need it mentally. So I was wondering if anyone could help me find either a cheap hotel (ensuite preferably) near the RFH, or offer me a place to crash for at least 2 nights? And I'd be totally up for a FAP.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 12:56 (twenty years ago)

...

Melissa W (Melissa W), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 13:36 (twenty years ago)

i might be away but otherwise it'll be cool to meet up

Sven Bastard (blueski), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 13:58 (twenty years ago)

Aww. I'd like to meet you!

--

Finding a place to stay is rather urgent, btw.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 14:38 (twenty years ago)

Cheap hotels in London

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 14:44 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, but that's not very helpful as I want places that people have actually seen. I can find websites as well as anyone else.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 14:45 (twenty years ago)

Also, I'm not really sure what area of London is closest to RFH.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 14:49 (twenty years ago)

RFH = South Bank so anywhere in Central London, especially the West End, should be fine, or bits of Southwark (although if you see the words 'Elephant and Castle' then run away).

Having never stayed in a hotel in London I can't help with recommendations and the same is probably true of a lot of other London Ilxers, who are most likely to read this thread. Reviving the other thread might be MORE helpful as it'll attract the attention of the various people who've visited London over the past couple of years.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 14:53 (twenty years ago)

Thanks, I think I'll revive that thread then. :)

Melissa W (Melissa W), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 14:56 (twenty years ago)

I wd also like to meet up. Mel, what's your HOTEL BUDGET like? I'd have a squiz at Youth Hostel type places if yr skint, for some reason I think that area will have a couple, can't say they'd be exactly luxurious or owt though.

Lucretia My Reflection (Lucretia My Reflection), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 15:11 (twenty years ago)

Would ideally not like to spend more than £65 a night. Could up that price if I could find somewhere to crash too.

I'd do the hostel thing, but I have too many hangups for it.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 15:24 (twenty years ago)

Strike that £65 figure, the dollar is shittier than I thought. Under £55 would be much better.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 15:25 (twenty years ago)

I seem to recall HOLIDAY INNs (Euston, Old Street, poss closer to the RFH anyone) being abt £65 a night, whenever I've wandered past them at 4.30 in the morning as tired as a dog and tempted just to go in...

Lucretia My Reflection (Lucretia My Reflection), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 15:40 (twenty years ago)

what a ripoff.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 15:43 (twenty years ago)

Anyone else up for a FAP?

I think I might have found accomodation, luckily.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 08:05 (twenty years ago)

Oh my, have I become a leper without my knowledge?

Melissa W (Melissa W), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 14:40 (twenty years ago)

melissa it wd be lovely to see you again, but i am not sure of my movements this far ahead

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 14:42 (twenty years ago)

Oh I should mention that I mean the 26th of *March*.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 14:43 (twenty years ago)

oh wait which 26th are we talkin about? the "may" refers to an earlier FAP doesn't it

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 14:43 (twenty years ago)

Heh yes. I worried that this thread would be confusing, but I always have this fear of starting new threads.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 14:49 (twenty years ago)

yes i'm around for this

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 14:49 (twenty years ago)

which day would be best for you melissa? xp (maybe a mod could change the thread title?).

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 14:50 (twenty years ago)

Either Saturday or Tuesday.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 14:52 (twenty years ago)

And a title change might be helpful.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 14:57 (twenty years ago)

Ooh, yay! Whoever changed it, thanks!

Melissa W (Melissa W), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 15:16 (twenty years ago)

mel i just realised sat 26th no good for me :(

which is the tue?

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 17 March 2005 00:07 (twenty years ago)

Tuesday the 29th.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Thursday, 17 March 2005 08:18 (twenty years ago)

Sorry Melissa can't do either as I'm up at my mum's in Glasgow for Easter week.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 17 March 2005 09:03 (twenty years ago)

Saturday not good for me either although Tuesday looks fine. Wherabouts are you staying?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 17 March 2005 09:20 (twenty years ago)

tuesday then :)

after last night's barryfap, i'm all about the faps again :)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Thursday, 17 March 2005 10:29 (twenty years ago)

Melissa, you should go with what claire suggested and book somewhere near her, one of her friends stayed in one which was about £40 and pleasant enough, the rfh is about half an hour's walk from russell square (as i remember, london ilxors feel free to correct me) and nice and central.

leigh (leigh), Thursday, 17 March 2005 11:40 (twenty years ago)

I'll be staying around Greenwich.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Sunday, 20 March 2005 19:26 (twenty years ago)

That's round my way, but its probably still better to get a proper FAP going as close to the centre of town as possible.

Its not exactly close to the centre of town but you couldn't find many nicer places to be staying, and its only about 20mins on the train to the RFH.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 20 March 2005 20:32 (twenty years ago)

I've just reread the entirety of this thread and its made me bizarrely nostalgic, despite remembering nothing of the original FAP in question (except the Planet of the Apes discussion).

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 21 March 2005 10:23 (twenty years ago)

i read the first few posts and got really excited about picnicing on primrose hill before i realised that that was 2003!!

i remember hearing about a hostel near waterloo.. but that may be a long term stay thingie.

ken c (ken c), Monday, 21 March 2005 11:52 (twenty years ago)

Obv I have no objection to a Greenwich FAP, possibly in the Yacht, as long as the Gate Clock is firmly mooted...

Neither do I object to a townFAP.

In fact, FAP FAP FAP FAP that is all.

Lucretia My Reflection (Lucretia My Reflection), Monday, 21 March 2005 11:56 (twenty years ago)

Greenwich = fairly tricky for anyone in West or SW London but as its on the DLR its not really any harder for North Londoners to get to than the Swimmer is for us lot.

What about a South Bank FAP? Founders Arms, maybe?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 21 March 2005 12:08 (twenty years ago)

i think i was in america last time this happened

i will be in america this time as well!

too late to recommed hotels it seems, but holly house, in victoria sw1 is £25 a night, and is fine

charltonlido (gareth), Monday, 21 March 2005 12:08 (twenty years ago)

Ah noor, not the Founders. How about the Rose & Crown (?) near Waterloo? Handy for Mel to get the train from Waterloo East direct to Greenwich and unlikely to be crowded so us menks cd take over...

Lucretia My Reflection (Lucretia My Reflection), Monday, 21 March 2005 12:15 (twenty years ago)

I was completely unaware of the existence of that pub but it looks GRATE so I think we should goferit.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 21 March 2005 12:18 (twenty years ago)

Rose & Crown

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 21 March 2005 12:18 (twenty years ago)

I had a lot of fun at Hardy's in Greenwich in which one can play darts. i haven't played darts for ages

ken c (ken c), Monday, 21 March 2005 12:19 (twenty years ago)

is the hole in the wall still open in waterloo? that was a nice little boozer too

ken c (ken c), Monday, 21 March 2005 12:21 (twenty years ago)

fancyapint reckons it's shite now :(

ken c (ken c), Monday, 21 March 2005 12:24 (twenty years ago)

I think I have just seen the Covent Garden Travelodge. I think it's pushing its luck calling itself Covent Graden.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Monday, 21 March 2005 13:40 (twenty years ago)

I'm gonna be there by Saturday morning, people! Get crackin' with the plans.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Thursday, 24 March 2005 17:53 (twenty years ago)

I'll check this thread as much as possible over the weekend.

Look forward to seeing you all, la revedere!

Melissa W (Melissa W), Friday, 25 March 2005 19:32 (twenty years ago)

Right then, Rose & Crown on Tuesday evening IT IS.

(Melissa - follow the link upthread. It should be fairly easy for you to get to from Greenwich)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 25 March 2005 19:35 (twenty years ago)

So who's coming?

Can someone who's sure they are coming email me their mobile number?

Melissa in London, Sunday, 27 March 2005 23:33 (twenty years ago)

i am i think

mark s (mark s), Monday, 28 March 2005 09:47 (twenty years ago)

Um so far it seems like only two people are coming then?

Hardly seems like a FAP...

Melissa in London, Tuesday, 29 March 2005 07:40 (twenty years ago)

Sorry Melissa, Chris and I are off to Dallas and we have to pack tonight :0(

Most of the london ilxors post from work and they've been at home all weekend which would explain why it's been so quiet on here, so i'm sure you'll have plenty of people there tonight though.

Vicky (Vicky), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 08:51 (twenty years ago)

Hi Mel, I'm going to stop by, though possibly not for long as I appear to have a stinking cold. I'll be there about 7 as I don't finish work till 6.30.

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 09:19 (twenty years ago)

I am afraid I have my doubts about coming - you know I am keen to see you again, Melissa, but I feel really drained at the moment, it's the wrong end of town for me, there is something else that I kind of have to do this evening, and I need an early night to give myself the best chance of getting back to work tomorrow. I'll see how I feel later, because I'd be sorry to miss you.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 09:58 (twenty years ago)

I'll be there from about 6ish.

Dave B (daveb), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 10:21 (twenty years ago)

I shall pop by, not sure when though.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 10:26 (twenty years ago)

Anyone else then? Hopefully I shall be there around 6:30-7ish.

Melissa in London, Tuesday, 29 March 2005 14:40 (twenty years ago)

select, enjoyable and high-quality microfap achieved despite MISERABLE WEATHER!!

i am not a judge of such things possibly, but the rose&crown is a nice small friendly old-skool pub

important topic for future discussion: dave b's madd wub for the DA VINCI CODE!!

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 19:58 (twenty years ago)

Melissa, it was lovely to meet you! I'm sorry I bailed early, but I think I've now got a temperature and am relaxing while feeling sorry for myself, playing poker and listening to Wheatus (really!)

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 20:29 (twenty years ago)

sorry i couldn't make it, other things i really had to commit to tonight. i fear engulfment by number of things to sort out, but hope fun was had.

Sven Bastard (blueski), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 20:32 (twenty years ago)

I arrived at Waterloo at about 9.15 only to be informed there was no one left in the pub. Amateurs.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 22:44 (twenty years ago)

omigod i was so long waiting for the first next person to turn up that i FORGOT the immediate thing i noticed on entering = STUFFED KITTEN over the bar!!

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 23:00 (twenty years ago)

Matt, I would have stuck around for you if I'd known you were coming!

Melissa W (Melissa W), Thursday, 31 March 2005 22:22 (twenty years ago)

eleven months pass...
I'm gonna be in town from the 17th to the 21st or 22nd. Will obviously be busy the whole day on the 18th and the 19th, but I am free after that if anyone wants to have an informal FAP.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Saturday, 25 March 2006 16:14 (nineteen years ago)

Also can someone please update the subject of this thread so that it's for May 06?

Melissa W (Melissa W), Saturday, 25 March 2006 17:02 (nineteen years ago)

It would be good to see you again! I don't know what is happening on the 18th or 19th, but I expect I can make some kind of guess.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 25 March 2006 18:26 (nineteen years ago)

Title sorted. I suspect I'll be able to make this - May is a long way away though.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Saturday, 25 March 2006 18:32 (nineteen years ago)

I expect that your guess would be correct, Mr. Skidmore.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Saturday, 25 March 2006 20:48 (nineteen years ago)

It'd be lovely to see you again Mel :)

Markelby (Mark C), Saturday, 25 March 2006 21:00 (nineteen years ago)

omg i've met someone else featured on that page before! terrifying.

toby (tsg20), Thursday, 25 May 2006 09:12 (nineteen years ago)

Which?

Melissa W (Melissa W), Thursday, 25 May 2006 23:53 (nineteen years ago)

"I think a lot of them sound unfinished," the fanatic scathes.

Melissa, did you really "scathe"? Like, proper menacing 'n' that? That'd be cool, though I suspect it's just some crappy NME hack raking through a thesaurus for a word that sounded, well, scathing.

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 26 May 2006 05:59 (nineteen years ago)

em1ly hy4tt.

toby (tsg20), Friday, 26 May 2006 07:54 (nineteen years ago)

Radiohead covered Four Minute Warning?

BRILLIANT!

Lucretia My Reflection (Lucretia My Reflection), Friday, 26 May 2006 10:02 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, please tell me that means the Mark Owen song!

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 26 May 2006 10:04 (nineteen years ago)

*googles* - oh. Disappointment.

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 26 May 2006 10:07 (nineteen years ago)

4 Minute Warning is some crappy original song of theirs. Ugh.

Heh, Toby, where did you meet Em1ly?

Oh, and I did not scathe. I snarked.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Friday, 26 May 2006 16:45 (nineteen years ago)

i met em1ly back when we were the two people with the most radiohead tapes in britain, i guess (97 or so). we both used to sell/swap tapes via nme ads. i met her when she visited cambridge for an unbelievable truth gig. she had a scrapbook which, she said, "proved that she was into them before anyone else". do you know her?

toby (tsg20), Friday, 26 May 2006 16:55 (nineteen years ago)

I didn't know you had ever been into Radiohead that much!

I only vaguely know her. I've seen her around, we've talked a bit, but she's not really part of my group.
