Hottest posted chick or hottest chick poster?

El Fish, Thursday, 1 May 2003 21:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Damn, I actually wanted to know the answer to this question, but the Judgement of Paris is obviously something that can happen in the National Gallery but not on ILX.

Momus (Momus), Thursday, 1 May 2003 21:42 (twenty-two years ago)

(For why this might be, see (but do not revive) the Becks Futures thread and its discussion of 'the anxiety of verticality'.)

Momus (Momus), Thursday, 1 May 2003 21:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Well Momus, I actually just wanted to avoid war and ruin.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 1 May 2003 21:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Fine, fine: of all the women from ILX that I have met in real life,* Felicity is by far the hottest.

*I have only met one woman from ILX in real life.

amateurist (amateurist), Thursday, 1 May 2003 21:50 (twenty-two years ago)

jess is pretty hott but she's got too much of a fucking mouth on her.

bnw (bnw), Thursday, 1 May 2003 21:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Anybody remember Am I cool or not? People were judged and ranked rather harshly there. It was based on visual cues (Ned's hair.) Men and women alike were told quite brutally whether they made the grade or not. Including me (I didn't.) That's what sold ILX to me, actually.

'Am I cool or not. Because image matters.' That was Tom. He was making a provocative pop music point. Image matters in pop. You judge it not just for the music, but for whether people are hot or not. Dudes and chicks. Pop is also about judging, cruel as that may sometimes be. Judging is what kids do when they buy one record and not another.

What this 'troll' is asking is really no different from what Tom was asking back then.

Momus (Momus), Thursday, 1 May 2003 21:59 (twenty-two years ago)

people also sent their photos into aicon, momus

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 1 May 2003 22:00 (twenty-two years ago)

*Not that Felicity isn't hott.

amateurist (amateurist), Thursday, 1 May 2003 22:01 (twenty-two years ago)

there i go though, with that mouth of mine again

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 1 May 2003 22:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Momus, that Helen of Troy miniseries was crap.

This is not a troll. The thing I was teasing the not-troll about was the part where not-troll pretended to have a conversation with himself under two separate names. That seemed disingenous so I teased but the thread question is no biggie.

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 1 May 2003 22:02 (twenty-two years ago)

but felicity is right, this question is just kinda stoopid not offensive. as long as it stays on the right side of rape fantasies and stalking.

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 1 May 2003 22:04 (twenty-two years ago)

you just made me realize that I actually had a stalking nightmare last night. It was unpleasant. The worst part of any nightmare is the not realizing you are dreaming.

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 1 May 2003 22:07 (twenty-two years ago)

But are we saying that judgement has to lead to scary stuff like rape and stalking?

Momus (Momus), Thursday, 1 May 2003 22:08 (twenty-two years ago)

last night i had a nightmare about drowning in root beer

yes, momus that's exactly what we're saying, very good, give yourself a cookie and toodle off

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 1 May 2003 22:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Eat a bag of me (plus one million dollar donation), Jess!

Momus (Momus), Thursday, 1 May 2003 22:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I believe, Momus, that we're saying, to wit, what's the fucking point?!

amateurist (amateurist), Thursday, 1 May 2003 22:12 (twenty-two years ago)

P.S. Momus you are becoming a caricature of a self-caricature.

amateurist (amateurist), Thursday, 1 May 2003 22:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Like Jess, you mean?

Momus (Momus), Thursday, 1 May 2003 22:14 (twenty-two years ago)

he'll be here all week, folx

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 1 May 2003 22:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Momus, my respect for you (or my ability to imagine you as an actual human being, naked photos aside) jumps up when you show evidence of actually having any emotional stake in the things you post, rather than just trying to get everyone worked up.

amateurist (amateurist), Thursday, 1 May 2003 22:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Not that you should or do give a shit.

amateurist (amateurist), Thursday, 1 May 2003 22:17 (twenty-two years ago)

now this I consider trolling.

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 1 May 2003 22:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I have an emotional stake this week in verticality and the anxiety of judgement. Is that a problem?

Momus (Momus), Thursday, 1 May 2003 22:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean, if it were off topic that would be one thing...

Momus (Momus), Thursday, 1 May 2003 22:19 (twenty-two years ago)

(whoops crosspost up there)

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 1 May 2003 22:19 (twenty-two years ago)

What, sorry, I was just: grrrr. I'll slink away quietly.

amateurist (amateurist), Thursday, 1 May 2003 22:20 (twenty-two years ago)

wait. fel, who were you talking about?!

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 1 May 2003 22:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I wonder!

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 1 May 2003 22:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Roman, Thursday, 1 May 2003 22:22 (twenty-two years ago)

:(

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 1 May 2003 22:23 (twenty-two years ago)

This is the stupidest thread I've had the privilege of posting to in a long time.

amateurist (amateurist), Thursday, 1 May 2003 22:24 (twenty-two years ago)

If you can say which threads are stupid, you can say which chiXor hott!

Momus (Momus), Thursday, 1 May 2003 22:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Please direct me to a more interesting thread.

Roman, Thursday, 1 May 2003 22:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, Amateurist is the only poster out of 65 answers to this thread to treat the question legitimately, and then screams at Momus "what's the fucking point"? I'm having a hard time understanding that one...

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 1 May 2003 22:29 (twenty-two years ago)

none of you are all that hot, really.

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 1 May 2003 22:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay... battle of the chiXors (ROUND 1)
A/POO: kate v ally
B/POO: felicity v jess
winner A v winner B

Any other input?

PS... are these choices valid or are they all duds?

Roman, Thursday, 1 May 2003 22:34 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm certainly a dud

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 1 May 2003 22:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh No! Say it ain't so!

Roman, Thursday, 1 May 2003 22:39 (twenty-two years ago)

come on

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 1 May 2003 22:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm anxious about making judgements (after all, in the Rubens, 'to the left stands Juno who is angered by the choice, and to the right, turned away, Minerva, identifiable by the armour at her feet') but I'll say Mary, though I've never seen any images of her.

Sorry if I'm jumping the gun. And sorry for actually answering the question as though I had an 'emotional stake' in it, if that offends anyone.

(Is Jess female?)

Momus (Momus), Thursday, 1 May 2003 22:42 (twenty-two years ago)

only my undertaker knows for sure

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 1 May 2003 22:44 (twenty-two years ago)

wait JESS is a woman? I thought all of you LAFFED at me when i told my story of thinking jess was a woman named jessICA back on the "wish happy birthday to jess" thread earlier this year ?

and now everyone is treating jess as a female? WTF? is there a mangina here???????????????

Momus (Momus), Thursday, 1 May 2003 22:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Prego!

Roman, Thursday, 1 May 2003 22:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm anxious about making judgements

Well, yes, I think you should be. For instance, I would feel quite anxious walking up to a group of people and saying to each of them in turn "You are the best-looking, you are okay but less so, you need work and you are just plain ugly."

I have never understood people who don't treat internet life as real life. For the time you are there, it is your real life, with real effects on people. For a variety of reasons, including the archives, ILX is not a particularly good place to play around at manipulating people, I don't think.

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 1 May 2003 23:00 (twenty-two years ago)

does this mean i need to come clean about my gender?

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 1 May 2003 23:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Could it wait? I was enjoying having you over me.

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 1 May 2003 23:04 (twenty-two years ago)

The internet is where you can crash the plane and walk away. Why, I could even insult Jess on this thread, and she didn't hit me!

Momus (Momus), Thursday, 1 May 2003 23:04 (twenty-two years ago)

It seems that when an elitist clique thinks a thread is beneath them they can sniggle all they want yet are pretty much immune to the effects of their own self-righteous and often useless prattle they spew all over different parts of the board.

Kyle, Thursday, 1 May 2003 23:05 (twenty-two years ago)

felicity that's just dirty

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 1 May 2003 23:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I am really confused. I honestly don't know Jess' gender

I also don't know why opeople have 2 working eyes wear eye-patches!? THE WORLD IS SO MYSTERIOUS!

Vic (Vic), Thursday, 1 May 2003 23:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Kyle, I don't know what you mean, but the verticalities in your comment are deliciously vertiginous!

Momus (Momus), Thursday, 1 May 2003 23:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, Kyle, the elitist clique should be punished. Severely. And forced to answer all threads until the cows come home.

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 1 May 2003 23:09 (twenty-two years ago)

With all due respect to the posters of chicken pictures, I think we got somewhere better.

think of them as a buffer.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 1 May 2003 23:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Who's the most sniggling, elitist chick clique on this board?

Momus (Momus), Thursday, 1 May 2003 23:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, the world we live in is full of mysteries. When I was in Washington, DC last summer and ordered a double espresso at a STARBUCKS (gasp!) I was looked at with disdain by the barrista who rudely asked, "You mean a doppio?" But when I answered in return, "sì e potreste renderli rapido, proletario ..." all I got was an empty gaze of non-recognition.

Roman, Thursday, 1 May 2003 23:19 (twenty-two years ago)

What does "sniggle" mean?

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 1 May 2003 23:20 (twenty-two years ago)

i think it means to root one's nose, as in to find truffles

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 1 May 2003 23:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a new goat and her knee is sniggling when she walks.

Momus (Momus), Thursday, 1 May 2003 23:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh... I don't know! I just felt like sniggling.

sniggle (v): To fish for eels by thrusting a baited hook into their hiding places

Kyle, Thursday, 1 May 2003 23:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I see. By the way, KK I loved your playing on Screaming for Vengeance!

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 1 May 2003 23:32 (twenty-two years ago)

sniggle (v): To fish for eels by thrusting a baited hook into their hiding places

Which can be up a nostril or in a goat's knee.

(That goat thread is moderated by the sinister 'Goatlistener', who is listening to total silence in there. It's scary.)

Momus (Momus), Thursday, 1 May 2003 23:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Why, thank you Mr. Diamond. But please, speak no more, SINNER!

Kyle, Thursday, 1 May 2003 23:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Whoa.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 1 May 2003 23:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I was just about to link to that exact same thread, Spencer! I Love Goats is a revelation to me! I will never be seen in boring old I Love Everything again!

Momus (Momus), Thursday, 1 May 2003 23:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I love goat semen, for instance!

Momus (Momus), Thursday, 1 May 2003 23:43 (twenty-two years ago)

'If you can swing the semen, breed it to your best, its just one kidding. Vicki'

I am 'Goatlistener'.

Momus (Momus), Thursday, 1 May 2003 23:45 (twenty-two years ago)

should we go there and just add: *sniggle*

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 1 May 2003 23:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Dan Perry, if you are reading this thread, please go to the goat semen thread and post-away.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 1 May 2003 23:49 (twenty-two years ago)

What could we add to such perfection?

'I have been pouring over websites and reading and talking about goats, and the Sodium Oaks lines just keep on popping out... where do the "insiders" find these great bucks semen GCH++*B Yreka, ++*B Xspurt, GCH++*B Royal Risk, +*B Sumac etc ?'

The genius is in 'pouring over websites'.

Momus (Momus), Thursday, 1 May 2003 23:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Damn right! Ever read the fantabulous book RAISING SHEEP(THE MODERN WAY) by Paula Simmons? A fucking MODERN CLASSIC!

Roman, Thursday, 1 May 2003 23:49 (twenty-two years ago)

And 'Xspurt' is pretty good too.

Momus (Momus), Thursday, 1 May 2003 23:51 (twenty-two years ago)

If you can swing the semen, breed it to your best, its just one kidding. Vicki

you're right, what more can anyone say about importing goat semen from France?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 1 May 2003 23:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't bother! Goat semen from Sicily is a bit more lively than French counterparts.

A Day of Horror:

Goatposter 1:

'the helper came back and said the kid was deformed. My friend took over the gas and I went to have a look . 7 legs, and a head inside the pelvis of the main body, three spines, and it's intestines were outside the body. My goodness. The kid was alive, too. This was the strangest thing I have ever seen. The vet had never seen an animal with so many legs either.'

Goatposter 2:

'I have never in my life heard of anything like this in goats. But I guess I shouldn't be shocked if it happens in humans.'

I, um, kid you not.

Momus (Momus), Friday, 2 May 2003 00:01 (twenty-two years ago)

... you really should read the Paula Simmons' book. The section with the Burdizzo Emasculator (the tool used to render a billy goat's nads useless) is very clinical yet beautifully cold and brutal as well. She is a seriously underlooked writer of great merit.

Momus, how much of your next album is going to be about goats, deformities and hot chick posters?

Millar (Millar), Friday, 2 May 2003 00:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Chicks are, like, totally last year. J0hN Darni3LL3 was so ahead of his time, but I'm not ashamed to follow up that rocky mountain track.

Momus (Momus), Friday, 2 May 2003 00:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Self-sucking doe

'Well, I've suspected it for a few days now, but today favoritegoat was caught in the act of drinking her own milk! I thought I'd try teat-taping her for a few days, but as dry and coooooold as it is here, I'm worried about it making her teats sore. Anyone have another idea (other than culling)?'

Momus (Momus), Friday, 2 May 2003 00:20 (twenty-two years ago)

NB M0untain G0ats are not actually goats but antelopes

this thread is disturbing because 1) all the people who initially took offense were right but 2) I actually have an opinion on the question but am ashamed to voice it

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Friday, 2 May 2003 01:04 (twenty-two years ago)

i have an opinion too but it would invariably piss that person off

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 2 May 2003 01:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think there's anything wrong with having an opinion that you feel is better left unspoken. It happens quite often in all kinds of social situations, no? I mean you might meet somebody and think to yourself, "Gee, this guy has a really terrible haircut." But you wouldn't say that to someone you just met, would you? And even if you knew the person well, you wouldn't say it in front of other people, unless you were trying to hurt his feelings.

A lot of guys probably make these kinds of judgments about women almost instinctively, without even consciously deciding to, but there are a lot of good reasons why it's not necessarily a good idea to speak them aloud (or post them on a board). For one, it's kind of demeaning to the women, who did not ask to be sized up by strange men and ranked according to sexual appeal. For another, it's a very superficial way of looking at a person. So I don't really see why it should be disturbing to have thoughts and opinions that you don't think you should voice. It's a normal part of social interaction.

o. nate (onate), Friday, 2 May 2003 01:13 (twenty-two years ago)

no o. nate it's disturbing precisely for the reasons you cite: contrary to (what I perhaps incorrectly surmise as) prevailing public opinion at least here in America, I think it's right and healthy to suppress some things. Thoughts that spring from ignoble impulses, vengeful feelings, things like what you name, etc. This thread sort of agitates things. I was just sort of joining in the spirit of fun, though, not actually calling the thread "disturbing" in a "o now I am troubled when o when shall my soul be at rest" way

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Friday, 2 May 2003 01:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I see what you mean, J0hn. There is the idea floating around the zeitgeist that it's good to alway be completely open, up-front, and vocal about everything - I think it comes out of the whole psychoanalysis/self-help book matrix. "Repression=Bad" becomes this sort of mantra that is applied far beyond it's realm of usefulness. People forget that the conditions that Freud was talking about are serious neuroses, he never intended to abjure regular, every-day discretion or white lies. Perhaps this idea caught on in America so well because we've never been particularly good at the social graces.

o. nate (onate), Friday, 2 May 2003 01:47 (twenty-two years ago)

well as I work in the mental health biz I won't go so far as to decry "being open & up-front" -- I do still think that people generally aren't open enough! But "being open" and "spilling every last thing that happens to cross your mind" are two entirely different things, and in many ways the former option involves rather more filtering (i.e. asking oneself questions like "am I actually saying what I feel, or just reacting i.e. acting out my feeling?"). So I don't think that the "all suppression is unhealthy" meme can actually be blamed on "the self-help movement" (whose existence I seriously question: there was an industry [or sub-industry, in publishing] regarding this, but for the most part I think "the let-it-all-hang-out self-help crowd" is a strawman).

I'm thinking more of a cross-section of people who've read a lot of postmodern theory (esp. post-Freudian stuff, it inevitably runs through Bataille at some point) and guests on the Jerry Springer show.

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Friday, 2 May 2003 01:58 (twenty-two years ago)

America didn't ask to be judged based on her population's manners by strange men and ranked according to politeness.

Repressing thoughts and being polite I think are two different things. I think everybody has an unconscious opinion on this question - I mean look at the crush threads for crying out loud, we all do it - but it in this case it's hard to see how honestly answering the question is anything but misogynistic for one thing and likely to cause a lot of general unpleasantness for another.

That's Bataille's wife, Sylvia. Of course she left him for Jacques Lacan. Please explain the relevance of this for post-Freudian theory please.

But are we saying that judgement has to lead to scary stuff like rape and stalking?

TO go back to a serious point: yes, Momus, it has on several occasions on this board, or were you not paying attention?

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 2 May 2003 03:31 (twenty-two years ago)

By the way, J0hn, can I say that the one thing I love most about your presence on this board (and obviously this means "the thing I always agree with you about and am glad to see") is your standing up for the idea of people having certain standards of just not, you know, doing unpleasant things to other people. This turns out to be at the root of so many discussions on here, and there's always a push from one side to give people lots of latitude to do lots of things and make it incumbent upon other people not to be offended or hurt about it. Which is certainly valuable a lot of the time, but when it comes to dealing with individual people, yeah, I think there's some basic things beyond moral/immoral that's very much like "polite"/"impolite"; I think "polite" is something to value, and I think you do too, and awww, keep it up, etc. I think this position should have some sort of slogan, like "Just Because You Have Every Right To Do It Doesn't Mean You're Not Being A Dick."

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 2 May 2003 03:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 2 May 2003 08:52 (twenty-two years ago)

This thread would only not be sexist if there were an equal thread asking "Truly: Who is the hottest dude poster on this board?"

(Except in a bizarre twist on gender preconceptions, I bet the males would be lining up to be judged according to their hotness.)

And I would also like to point out the fallacy earlier in the thread. Ally is *WAAAAYYY* hotter than me. I mean, look at her ass!

kate, Friday, 2 May 2003 11:22 (twenty-two years ago)

But le coq finds me genetically unfunny. :'''(

All these posts and Truly has still not responded to the question

It's Lionel Ritchie, isn't it? He wrote "Truly".

Nicole (Nicole), Friday, 2 May 2003 17:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Besides all the other possible reasons for not wanting to answer a question like this, I think there are about twenty women on this board, just from the ones I've met or seen pics of, who would have every right, if I nominated one of them, to feel slighted. And the one I did mention would probably be creeped out or something. Anyway and more significantly, I've given a list of the women here I fancy already!
