One of my friends recently invited me to the site so I signed up and then I just had to invite some other people so I wouldn't have only one friend. I think it's kind of neat because you discover pretty quickly that a lot of your friends are connected to each other in various ways. It's like a big friendly web of love or something. But maybe it's just cause everyone in my entire city seems to be on there (or is it that popular everywhere?).

Friendster needs some tweakin though... I suppose it is still in the design stages or whatever, so I guess it can be forgiven. I especially dislike that you can mark yourself as "in a relationship," but you can't actually indicate that one of the friends in your "personal network" is actually your SO.

I have already seen at least one person meet somebody to hang out with through it though, so there's got to be something at least marginally useful. Of course, like anything else it sorta requires that at least one person be the kind of person who would email a stranger based on a description on the internet.

I just signed up for this today, because I got an e-mail that said: "Reminder, your friend [So-and-So] invited you to join Friendster." I sort of resented the fact that it pestered me like a week after my initial invitation, but then I figured what the hey. Now apparently I have a Personal Network of like 48 people, but I only seem to know 2 of them, and the rest of 'em look like total dorks.

I think it's some kind of failsafe so you don't add too many people all at once, i.e. some cheeky person coming on and sending requests to hundreds of people they don't know in the span of 15 minutes or so. When I try to add two people in the same day I get that little request thingy for a full name or email addy.

But, I'm getting some weird error message when I try to approve Ally as my friend. INTERNET CODING is standing in the way of our friendship!!!

Yeah RJG, that's kind of a weird issue...I take it on a case-by-case basis. If I feel I can say something substanstive about a person's character -- regardless of whether I met them or not -- then I'll have no qualms about adding a person as a friend.

Stence - it's a small world! Yeah, we went to school together. Er, either that or I was a post-collegiate layabout in HP while she was in school, I can't remember. She's awesome though, I miss her and all my ex-pat homiez.

One of the funny things about this is definitely the way you find out that your friends from seemingly disparate social groups are like two degrees of separation from each other (not going through yourself, that is).

Ok, Ned, to be completely serious, what is it exactly about Friendster or the idea thereof that you don't like? You seem especially down on Friendster, and not just indifferent.

Having known you for a while, I could figure out Friendster wouldn't be "your thing" at all. And lord knows, there are plenty of other community utilities, online or otherwise, that I either feel serve no useful purpose or I loathe loathe LOATHE, though everyone else seems to enjoy them...

i think the point is to show off how cool you are and how many friends you have. it is also important to look slightly askew at the camera rather than at it and to have your photo in black and white while looking moody, and the profile must imply that you are much better than anyone who would reply to it. you must read vonnegut and sedaris and play interpol records. despite this studied cool you must count mr t and david hasselhof as your friends, this is to indicate that you have a playful side too. i read it in the manual

I think so, yes, since some hypersensitive people can take this the wrong way. Some person in the office here didn't approve of me i though, but then he came up to me in person the next day and said i had made some technical mistake when inviting him or something. So i tried again but he still never approved of me; i would feel that he feels ambivalent about me due to all of this if it weren't for the fact tha he patted my back the next day to say hi.
