this is the thread where we talk breathlessly about the best TV show on North American television: THE AMAZING RACE!

Okay, the summer season has officially started. What do we think of our new crop of racers?

slutsky (slutsky), Friday, 30 May 2003 01:11 (twenty-one years ago) link

I like that there's a pair of clowns; I predict they'll be the bald brothers of this season. We also got a couple of virgins, who I can't quite read yet; a gay married couple who aren't out to the other teams (yet); another pair of frat boy types; the air traffic controllers, who got spirit; two couples who remind me of Fuzzy and the Bitch, last season's winners, and some others I can't recall.

Predictions?

etc?

slutsky (slutsky), Friday, 30 May 2003 01:13 (twenty-one years ago) link

Can anyone tell me why this isn't the most popular show on TV? Beats those other reality shows, I'll tell you what. I mean, they're racing around the world!

slutsky (slutsky), Friday, 30 May 2003 01:14 (twenty-one years ago) link

I get secondhand embarassment watching that show. There's a lot of footage of the contestants screaming at unsuspecting people "Where's this!" "How do I get here!", and they don't understand them. Its like when you're overseas and you see another American who think that if they speak really loud the other person will suddenly know English.

David Beckhouse (David Beckhouse), Friday, 30 May 2003 01:28 (twenty-one years ago) link

Some people in particular are quite horrible about this.

slutsky (slutsky), Friday, 30 May 2003 01:30 (twenty-one years ago) link

O those wacky ignorant Americans!

oops (Oops), Friday, 30 May 2003 01:30 (twenty-one years ago) link

hrm

slutsky (slutsky), Friday, 30 May 2003 01:31 (twenty-one years ago) link

yeah i wonder why it isn;t more popular. i was really into the first season. I think it's a bit harder to get into it because there are so many teams at first and it takes a while to get to know them. Phil is HOOOT though.

Carey (Carey), Friday, 30 May 2003 01:32 (twenty-one years ago) link

I forgot to mention the NFL wives!

Too bad about the couple that got booted, they seemed way nicer than those model types. But I guess they wouldn't have been able to keep up.

slutsky (slutsky), Friday, 30 May 2003 06:01 (twenty-one years ago) link

you have been philiminated.

it screens v. late monday nights here in oz. an undoubted classic that rewards co-operation and good sense. a pleasant change from all the fame whores on dirge like the batchelor. still grimace when thinking of flo's victory last season.

Chris Radford (Chris Radford), Friday, 30 May 2003 06:14 (twenty-one years ago) link

I know, that KILLED me! Though Fuzzy seemed pretty nice. He deserved it. But Flo man, that just wasn't right. I was all for the Bald Bros.

slutsky (slutsky), Friday, 30 May 2003 06:20 (twenty-one years ago) link

the n.f.l. wives or the models will be the next to go. they are too flakey. although i did enjoy how one of the models took time out to enjoy an espresso at a coffee shop IN THE MIDDLE OF A RACE. i'm rooting for either the clowns or the corrections officer and his punk rock son.

scott seward, Friday, 30 May 2003 09:54 (twenty-one years ago) link

it's not as good as the Mole, but it's a respectable second.

I think the Clowns could do it. The Virgins will implode, that girl is just wearing her virginity like sixty pound weight around her neck. She won't be able to take the close proximity to the young me on the other teams.
The gay couple seems a little too obsessed with their own gayness, much the same as the virgins are by their virginity. It's not so much that they're gay that will alienate them from the other teams, it's the chip on the prettier one's shoulder about it that will.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 30 May 2003 14:06 (twenty-one years ago) link

neither of these shows is as good as Monster Garage

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 30 May 2003 14:13 (twenty-one years ago) link

yeah, muscle gay man has serious issues. he's married to a man and wants to exact revenge on people who made him feel bad for being gay and yet he doesn't want the other teams to know that he is gay!!! whatta weirdo. i miss team guido and team cha cha cha already.

scott seward, Friday, 30 May 2003 14:17 (twenty-one years ago) link

and one of the bald brothers was gay too.

I mean, for this Ken-Doll to make an issue about being gay on this show is just fucking ridiculous.

In other news, I just spilled coffee on my yellow shirt. FUCK. I am never ever ever wearing anything but khaki ever again!

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 30 May 2003 14:24 (twenty-one years ago) link

Scott, you think the NFL wives will go soon? I think they are going to do alright (though it was really foolish to go for the fast forward on the FIRST leg). I can't see the models making it that far, and the air traffic controllers are only good in the air. If they lose their lead, that one guy's knee is going to cause them to lose the race.

By the way, great title for the thread. Definitely THE best reality show out there!

Jonathan, Friday, 30 May 2003 15:20 (twenty-one years ago) link

i know the girl who won last year

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 30 May 2003 15:24 (twenty-one years ago) link

I've got to ask. What's she like in person? She didn't seem like much on the show last year, with her personality and all (rather selfish, bitchy, demanding, and didn't like to put any effort forth, but blamed the other guy for everything). And I'd like to say it was just the editing of the show that made her look bad, but it wasn't.

Jonathan, Friday, 30 May 2003 15:32 (twenty-one years ago) link

she dated a friend of mine for a long time. i didn't see much of the show, but yr description isn't too far off the mark. she can be very sweet tho.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 30 May 2003 15:44 (twenty-one years ago) link

Watching the butterball lady and her husband taking tumbles any time running was required was quite th' hoot; she totally ass-planted herself running through the airport concourse in Milan, which required a slow re-viewing on TiVo.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Friday, 30 May 2003 16:41 (twenty-one years ago) link

Do you know if Flo gave up more than half of the winnings to Zach, since he basically carried her the whole way while she flirted with the twinbots?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 30 May 2003 16:55 (twenty-one years ago) link

i have no idea. i haven't seen her since the show started. she & my friend split. (and i haven't seen him in ages either)

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 30 May 2003 16:57 (twenty-one years ago) link

jonathan- the N.F.L. wives need to shed their pampered suburban instincts and get a little more competitive. It was a bad sign that they were bitching before they had even left L.A.!! That's never a good sign cuz the race is so long and anytime someone loses their shit that early on-like chubby hubby crying cuz he didn't get the hotel room!!-it doesn't bode well for a team. same with the models. i knew that the one was gonna start crying in the snow before they even got there. you gotta be tough, a little loud, and quick on your feet. The air traffic controllers will obviously have the edge as far as airports/air travel and that is a big help, actually. so much of their time is spent in airports, which is probably why some people don't like the show cuz it just reminds them of travel nightmares. I have travelling dreams all the time-i think that's why i like the show. it DOES make me breathless. my wife was eating dinner last night when it was on and she stopped and said "Jesus, this show is making me eat too fast!".

It kinda looked like to me that the chubby, happy couple were a little relieved to be out of it. I don't think you can actually be that happy and in love to win the race. You need someone to goad you on.

scott seward, Friday, 30 May 2003 17:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

oh yeah, except for the first two, which were won by yuppie frat boys, the best teams always have shitty relationships with each other.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 30 May 2003 17:04 (twenty-one years ago) link

that's true. the robot lawyers/twins that are so maddening in their efficiency and triathalon-style rigor often do well. It does help to keep a cool head. I still cringe when i think about the sad mother/daughter team stuck in the cab in India. Yikes! I also remember thinking: what is the fucking cameraman thinking who is sitting right fucking next to them!

scott seward, Friday, 30 May 2003 17:13 (twenty-one years ago) link

Probably something about hot mother/daughter action.

teeny (teeny), Friday, 30 May 2003 17:16 (twenty-one years ago) link

I certainly miss Team Cha Cha Cha. They were delightful.

And I agree--the NFL wives shouldn't have taken that Fast Forward. Very dumb--and they even came in fourth! Baaaaaad move on their part.

I'm sure the air traffic controllers will have a slight advantage in the airports, but I don't know how they're going to do in the more footrace-oriented parts of the competition.

the corrections officer and his punk rock son.

This is a very funny team. The son is such an archetypal hipster. Remember those two hipster roommates last season? Those guys were great.

slutsky (slutsky), Friday, 30 May 2003 17:20 (twenty-one years ago) link

Has anyone ever been to one of the Tarcons that Television Without Pity throws at the end of the show and usually the teams ditch the cbs party to attend?

Carey (Carey), Friday, 30 May 2003 17:28 (twenty-one years ago) link

No, but I've always been heartened that people care enough about the show to do that. At the end of every season I always get afraid that CBS'll cancel it.

Perhaps this summer will finally be the show's triumphant breakthrough to the American public.

slutsky (slutsky), Friday, 30 May 2003 17:30 (twenty-one years ago) link

i still think one of the greatest elements of that show is when a team thinks they have it made in the shade and are so far ahead and then they just end up waiting till 8 in the morning for something to open up. the looks on their faces as team after team starts showing up to wait with them is always priceless. Especially when they try to pretend like it's no big deal.

scott seward, Friday, 30 May 2003 17:47 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yeah, I think it's smart that teams can't get too far ahead of the others. Keeps the drama/unpredictability up.

slutsky (slutsky), Friday, 30 May 2003 17:59 (twenty-one years ago) link

I agree with you on the fact that it's good that teams can't get too far ahead, but there were times last season when Mr. Vietnam and his punching bag wife (well, verbally, at least) were behind, and I was praying that they would finally get knocked off, but then some challenge or whatever would allow all teams to catch up. It's very frustrating when the team you hate is in last place, and then catches up.
Oh, and Scott, I agree with you that the NFL wives shouldn't have been so bitchy early on, but I don't think that normally hurts a team as much as an early fast forward. I still hope they last a few weeks, just because I think they could be interesting.

Jonathan, Friday, 30 May 2003 18:19 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yeah, it can be frustrating.

(I was hoping Mr. Vietnam would have some traumatic "in country" flashbacks, whirling helicopter blades and all--but I actually liked him better when he was there)

slutsky (slutsky), Friday, 30 May 2003 18:25 (twenty-one years ago) link

(Really?! I didn't. I thought he was really cocky, kind of giving the whole, wow, these people can be nice. Hmmm.. don't regret blowing the shit out of them, but nice to see they learned how to respect us Americans. I thought he was a pig.
And the way he treated his wife was unbearable.)

Jonathan, Friday, 30 May 2003 18:28 (twenty-one years ago) link

He was really horrible to be sure. But he seemed a little calmer and more introspective in Vietnam. Maybe it's just me.

(BUT I DID HATE THE FUCKER!)

(though he was pretty fucking good at playing the game I though)

slutsky (slutsky), Friday, 30 May 2003 18:32 (twenty-one years ago) link

(thought)

slutsky (slutsky), Friday, 30 May 2003 18:33 (twenty-one years ago) link

flo was even worse than the fascist vet

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Friday, 30 May 2003 19:11 (twenty-one years ago) link

(i love this show too - missed the first one though... already hate the NFL wives sight unseen)

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Friday, 30 May 2003 19:13 (twenty-one years ago) link

they're not that bad--I think the other players were a bit rough on them--and when they got the cop to lead them to the airport it was a bit of a triumph

slutsky (slutsky), Friday, 30 May 2003 19:15 (twenty-one years ago) link

Does anybody know if cab drivers, hotel/airport employees, local authorities, etc. are briefed by TAR staff? The show always seems a little closed-circuit in the paths the players take and the way they always have such useful interactions with third parties (which probably helps keep things organized and entertaining, sure).

gazuga (gazuga), Saturday, 31 May 2003 03:42 (twenty-one years ago) link

I've always wondered about the logistics--especially the camera operators, who they edit around really really well.

s1utsky (slutsky), Saturday, 31 May 2003 05:18 (twenty-one years ago) link

so anyway, venice was nice and all and the eyes wide shut thing was an inspired touch. can't say that i even remember the team that got kicked off though. also, if the n.f.l. wives make it one more week i just might start rooting for them. But only if they can stop talking about how people think they are pampered cuz of their life of luxury. i would believe them about the life of luxury if it weren't for the fact that i have seen way too many episodes of mtv's cribs. sports star's homes are invariably half-empty McMansions with a big fishtank and 4 S.U.V.'s in the driveway. not MY idea of luxury, but you know, whatever.

scott seward, Friday, 6 June 2003 10:26 (twenty years ago) link

I thought this thread was going to be about white supremacists.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 6 June 2003 10:33 (twenty years ago) link

harf

Yeah, I didn't think this was the best episode--not enough locations really. That snow-rafting thing looked fun as hell, but it wasn't much of a challenge. And I was somewhat confused during all the train station whatnot.

But yeah, the eyes wide shut business was kind of amusing. Looked kind of rough for that one NFL wife who was in there forever. I actually kind of like them. (and good for the air-traffic controllers for using the fast-forward--that was a smart move)

s1utsky (slutsky), Friday, 6 June 2003 16:41 (twenty years ago) link

oh shit, how much better was this week's episode than last? the confrontation over the carriages, the asthma attack--THE AMAZING RACE IS BACK!!!

s1utsky (slutsky), Friday, 13 June 2003 00:41 (twenty years ago) link

Also it's apparently doing pretty well in the ratings, finally, which is good news for everyone.

s1utsky (slutsky), Friday, 13 June 2003 00:42 (twenty years ago) link

yeah, there was a lot going on! and it's official- I'm rooting for the n.f.l. wives as much as i'm rooting for anyone else. i even feel bad now for the one model who has to do everything. boy, did she pick the wrong friend to go with.the ending was good too. i didn't really like that one team, but getting the wrong train tickets...that was a nightmare.

scott seward, Friday, 13 June 2003 15:58 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah, that other model is just horrible. makes me gnash my teeth.

s1utsky (slutsky), Friday, 13 June 2003 16:01 (twenty years ago) link

it's like a bad dream where the one is doing everything she can and she has this whining crybaby chained to her across the world!

scott seward, Friday, 13 June 2003 16:35 (twenty years ago) link

It's Fuzzy and the Bitch all over again, man.

s1utsky (slutsky), Friday, 13 June 2003 17:12 (twenty years ago) link

I've watched a few eps and have yet to have TAR's hooks sink into me. What do you find so entertaining about this? (ps I'm a medium-core Survivor guy.)

Leee (Leee), Friday, 13 June 2003 17:16 (twenty years ago) link

OK, so I watched this last night also and marveled at just how asinine everyone was.

I'm rooting for the air traffic controllers.

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Friday, 13 June 2003 18:40 (twenty years ago) link

What do you find so entertaining about this?

About a race around the world?

s1utsky (slutsky), Friday, 13 June 2003 18:44 (twenty years ago) link

Unless it's done in 80 days, I'm not wowed.

Leee (Leee), Sunday, 15 June 2003 04:17 (twenty years ago) link

It's done in 30 days! Even more exciting!

s1utsky (slutsky), Sunday, 15 June 2003 04:47 (twenty years ago) link

three weeks pass...
Revive!

It took a while, but I'm thoroughly hooked. I'm actually sad to see T&A lose -- what better entertainment than two blondes bickering pointlessly?

Leee (Leee), Friday, 11 July 2003 19:56 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah. And one of them (the stoic-seeming one) I really liked.

I fucking hate the "engaged couple." they are so evil. all that mole stuff, fuck.

But you gotta have a team you love to hate.

s1utsky (slutsky), Friday, 11 July 2003 20:24 (twenty years ago) link

The wife (or fiancee to be precise) I like don't hate, maybe it's just because she's a redhead, but her man is a complete jerkoff. While I did unfortunately laff, when he goosed her on the train he totally was out of bounds, a point that he avoided confronting with his slimy laff.

Leee (Leee), Friday, 11 July 2003 20:32 (twenty years ago) link

They're both slimeballs. At least that's how I see it--smug and mean.

s1utsky (slutsky), Friday, 11 July 2003 21:13 (twenty years ago) link

Oh well.

Go clowns!

Leee (Leee), Friday, 11 July 2003 21:21 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah, they seem pretty good-hearted.

s1utsky (slutsky), Friday, 11 July 2003 21:24 (twenty years ago) link

No Canadians, sorry.

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 22 September 2003 14:04 (twenty years ago) link

OK I just scrolled up and realized I said the exact same thing about them two months ago.

s1utsky (slutsky), Monday, 22 September 2003 14:11 (twenty years ago) link

I smell a statscock whore...

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 22 September 2003 14:14 (twenty years ago) link

Put that as your occupation on the application form. That way when you're onscreen it'll say "Statscock Whore" under your name.

s1utsky (slutsky), Monday, 22 September 2003 14:22 (twenty years ago) link

Phil-Two
Statscock Whore, Delaware

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 22 September 2003 14:31 (twenty years ago) link

PS, I didn't mean that nobody cared about the clowns, just the opposite. After they left, there wasn't much to cheer for.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 22 September 2003 14:34 (twenty years ago) link

Delaware? :(

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 22 September 2003 14:35 (twenty years ago) link

I don't know where you're from (I just can't keep track), but Delaware seems to fit nice beside Statscock Whore.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 22 September 2003 14:58 (twenty years ago) link

Phil, me and you, we'll be the Asian Odd Couple.

Leee (Leee), Monday, 22 September 2003 19:31 (twenty years ago) link

I know I'm probably alone here, but it's still the best and i'm still watching. 3 shows in South America! That's a record, i think. Caviar, a dwarf, Christian models. What's not to like? No gay couple though!

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 30 July 2004 12:13 (nineteen years ago) link

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Friday, 30 July 2004 12:19 (nineteen years ago) link

She brought it on herself. She went out of her way to say on the first show that she was gonna disprove stereotypes about little people and that they could do anything and then proceeded to play the helpless little person card over and over again. She's shameless!

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 30 July 2004 12:20 (nineteen years ago) link

and her fuxxoring friend mirna, ugh. she reminds me of my friends wife. end-o

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Friday, 30 July 2004 12:20 (nineteen years ago) link

I agree with all of the comments made so far. I hate the dwarf too, but think that Mirna is far more useless than she is. And incredibly annoying.
I also hate how Brandon seems to throw his sexism on God's lap, as if God if forcing him to ignore his girlfriend. And like Scott, I was sad to see the lack of gay couple on this series as well.

Jonathan (Jonathan), Friday, 30 July 2004 13:11 (nineteen years ago) link

No clowns, either. :(
And Major Dad and Hot Daughter have alrady been eliminated. :( :(

Charla and Mirna are COMEDY GOLD.

"MUY RAPIDO, POR FAVOR! RAPIDO, PLEASE!"

St. Nicholas (Nick A.), Thursday, 5 August 2004 17:29 (nineteen years ago) link

Mirna has made me cry with laughter in every episode broadcast.

"Charla, this 150 pound slab of meat is HEAVY! Can you put it on your head?"

"An eating contest! Charla, you do it."

"Did someone just call me a bitch?"

Colin is also fantastically funny in how incredibly mean he is towards Christie.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 5 August 2004 17:31 (nineteen years ago) link

I think Colin and Mirna are going to have a major throw-down in the next episode, should be entertaining.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Thursday, 5 August 2004 17:32 (nineteen years ago) link

"JUST EAT THE DAMN CAVIAR OR WE'RE GOING TO LOSE THE RACE!!!!"
"Look, just stop talking; you get very tense when you're stressed and it makes people uncomfortable."

"The logic of shouting "Bellissimo!" to people in Russia still escapes me."

Hahahaha!! That was a hilarious moment. It was as close as she could get to Russian, I guess.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 5 August 2004 17:36 (nineteen years ago) link

RUN FASTER, CHARLA!!!!

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 5 August 2004 17:37 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm pretty sure she's running as fast as she can.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 5 August 2004 17:37 (nineteen years ago) link

Especially since she's invariably carrying both backpacks and towing a tractor trailer.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 5 August 2004 17:38 (nineteen years ago) link

Ha Ha!!

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 5 August 2004 17:39 (nineteen years ago) link

It's kinda like last year when that one model had to literally carry the other model around the world on her back. It was excruciating.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 5 August 2004 17:40 (nineteen years ago) link

Was anyone else disturbed by how Christie, Nickie and KAMIKARLI reacted to the caviar challenge? Since when does eating a large amount of food put you into an "i'm so cold" trauma coma?

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 5 August 2004 17:45 (nineteen years ago) link

I heart Mirna and Schmirna.

morris pavilion (samjeff), Thursday, 5 August 2004 17:47 (nineteen years ago) link

The jet-lag of being on a plane for 20 hours plus the high fat and sodium content could make somebody sick -- it worked out to 2+ pounds of caviar.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Thursday, 5 August 2004 17:48 (nineteen years ago) link

I liked how whichever of the twins took that task started out eating the caviar with the crackers (kind of like how they both decided to swim the episode before that, when no swimming was needed).

morris pavilion (samjeff), Thursday, 5 August 2004 17:50 (nineteen years ago) link

But the crackers make it less disgusting!

Those two dudes were wimpy about the caviar though. They made their girlfriends do it and then they were less than helpful. To say the least. I hate goldilocks and the other guy.

Blondefro is such a wimp -- he looked like he was going to cry when his girlfriend wanted him to do the challenge where he had to go into the tomb.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Thursday, 5 August 2004 17:57 (nineteen years ago) link

I could understand wanting to throw up, but I really didn't understand Nicole's reaction. She was reacting like she'd eaten strychnine.

Another classic moment: Charla spitting half-chewed chocolates all over the tray in the chocolate factory, making an already disgusting task that extra bit more revolting.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 5 August 2004 18:00 (nineteen years ago) link

I wanna try that caviar, just to gauge the likelihood of me getting through two pounds. (Is that a portion that the restaurant would actually serve, or would it be a challenging amount even to your average Russian caviar fan?)

morris pavilion (samjeff), Thursday, 5 August 2004 18:03 (nineteen years ago) link

The caviar thing is like when you challenge one of your buddies to eat a boxful of Krispy Kremes in 20 minutes and he passes out when he's done.

I liked how after the caviar challenge when the Twins came in, the one who didn't eat was all, "WHOO HOO!" jumping up and down, but the one who ate was all, "ugh."

Jimmy Carter, History's Greatest Monster (Leee), Thursday, 5 August 2004 19:38 (nineteen years ago) link

It was funny how, in the procession of teams reaching the finish line, whichever of the two didn't eat the caviar was beaming and clapping, while their partner looked ashen and unhappy.

My most-hated team is those two asshats from Brooklyn. "This place if full of dumb foreigners!," etc.

They've had better dumbo twins. That one Brooklyn dude really does look hobbled.

I don't know if i've already said this, but The Amazing Race has consistantly good casting. They are excellent at finding entertaining squabbling couples and "types" that are highly entertaining.

Mr. Tony Plow (Leee), Friday, 13 August 2004 20:11 (nineteen years ago) link

The latter. But most of the time the teams aren't truly fucked by other teams, but just by their own poor skills or bad luck. Most of the between-team conflict is just bitchiness.

I usually try and suspend disbelief when i watch these shows. i don't really want to think too hard about the logistics and editing cuz where's the fun in that? I mean, how DO they get cameramen on all these last-minute flights with 2 seats left? Do they buy up all the seats except for two? Colin & Christie met in a class at the University of Texas in Austin and have been
dating for over a year. Both now live in Corpus Christi, Texas. When Colin saw Christie
give a presentation in their communications class, he knew that she was the one for him.
It took eight months of being friends before he finally got her to go out on a date with
him.
Colin claims that he will ask Christie to marry him if they can get through the
Race together.

Christie is the 1996 Miss Teen USA winner, the first and only one from Texas. However,
she considers her biggest accomplishment in life to be working to pay her entire way
through college and graduating with honors. She describes herself and her teammate as
"very competitive, extremely aggressive with strong personalities." Although Christie
says that she is always late, she is also a perfectionist who hates losing.

Colin is the owner of a cell phone store. Among the accomplishments he is most proud
of is getting Christie to fall in love with him, which he claims is better than being the
top first-year dealer for a book publishing company in the United States.
He also agrees
that he and Christie are both very aggressive and “very outspoken and in-your-face.”
However, he is a very open person who will talk to anyone, while Christie is extremely
private.

Colin & Christie are excited about competing in THE AMAZING RACE 5 because they
will be able to travel the world and participate in this kind of competition. Christie adds,
"Another reason for doing this Race is that it is a test to see if we are marriage potential.
I know we can win, and if we do, we're getting married right after the show."

Brandon & Nicole met just over a year ago at a Bridal Extravaganza in Houston, Texas.
As reigning Miss Texas, she was there to model a new bridal gown, while Brandon was
there as her escort on the runway. Right after the bridal show ended, Brandon got her
telephone number, and they've been dating ever since. Both consider themselves very
religious and spiritual people and describe their relationship as God-centered.

Brandon, a Texas A&M alum, is now a model and has lived in various big cities,
including New York, Miami and Houston, while Nicole currently lives in Los Angeles
and is pursuing an acting career. Nicole's proudest accomplishments have been winning
Miss Texas USA 2003 and being the second runner up at Miss USA 2003.

Brandon & Nicole's primary motivation for being on THE AMAZING RACE 5 is to win

their careers have kept them apart.

Ha ha, one more reason why Canada rules, we can watch American TV shows twice in one night!

Huck, Tuesday, 31 August 2004 18:12 (nineteen years ago) link

Thanks Leon!!! I totally would have missed that and I would have hated to wait for the repeat.

I wanted God's models gone after they refused to do the Fast Forward using the LAMEST EXCUSE EVER (how is it that two alleged models don't understand the concept of wigs?).

Chip and Kim are great and their read on Colin and subsequent strategy for handling him = they are the smartest team in the race.

The twins... are dim. But yeah, that dude they begged cash off of had me in hysterics.

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 12:00 (nineteen years ago) link

I wanted God's models to be kicked off - they were last becuase of their vanity - they don't deserve to continue. I would have liked to see COlin coerce Christie into getting her head shaved though.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 13:56 (nineteen years ago) link

Huck, Wednesday, 1 September 2004 14:04 (nineteen years ago) link

I was somewhat disappointed by the lack of Colin freak-outs last night, though when he snapped at Christie at the brick factory it was pretty funny. The tasks last night all seemed pretty easy, there weren't any really scary or gross ones. I could've handled all that shit pretty easily. Chip & Kim are still my heros. I feel sorry for the male Bible model because he actually seems like a nice (though doofusy) guy who's willing to try some new things and then his annoying girlfriend freaks out about anything different or slightly scary. Classic "I hate Americans" moment last night: when female Bible model is talking about the large number of mosques in Dubai and says "They're on every corner, they're like 7-11's around here."

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 14:11 (nineteen years ago) link

She actually called them Starbucks.

My faves are Chip and Kim, too, but I can't really agree with their strategy of boosting Colin so he gets cocky and makes mistakes. The way to get those guys to mess up is to doubt their authority so they have to act more manly and aggressive.

How bout when Colin said how nice Calcutta was and Christie got mad at him for making fun of the place?

Maria D. (Maria D.), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 14:12 (nineteen years ago) link

OH YEAH. I was like, "Bitch, have you EVER counted the number of churches in an American town/suburb/city?" Growing up, there were FIFTEEN in my home town (pop. at the time: 12,000) often within blocks of each other.

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 14:14 (nineteen years ago) link

Sorry Huck...

Yeah, it was a little boring compared to other episodes, especially because Colin was all happy and didn't freak out once and even APOLOGIZED to Christie OMG WTF LOL. Brandon is a wuss. I can't believe anyone was dumb enough to do the mud thing rather than the whitewater thing, didn't they remember the scarab fiasco? Even though the twins getting kicked off fucks up my predictions from the other week, I'm glad they were the ones to go rather than Chip & Kim. GO CHIP AND KIM!!!

Maria D. (Maria D.), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 14:54 (nineteen years ago) link

I don't know, the one where they parachuted out of the plane didn't really pay off against the people driving in the desert - they all seemed to finish about the same time.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 14:55 (nineteen years ago) link

True. But usually it works out. Except when you bust up your knee like the dad did early on.

I'm convinced that what matters most in the race is how fast your cab driver turns out to be. It's a matter of luck.

Maria D. (Maria D.), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 14:56 (nineteen years ago) link

Also: everyone always catches up at the airport.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 14:57 (nineteen years ago) link

And people catch up at tourist attractions that don't open until 9 a.m.

Maria D. (Maria D.), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 15:10 (nineteen years ago) link

So basically, as long as you're not last and kicked off, you've got a good chance of catching up at the beginning of the next day.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 15:12 (nineteen years ago) link

Didn't Nicole look like she was willing/looking forward to sledging, but then Brandon busted out his "protective father" excuse?

EAT SLEDGE COLIN.

Question: when a flight is sold out, and only a few teams make it onboard, they still toss in a few camera shots of the lucky few chilling in the cabin. So, if the flights are sold out, and no one else can get a ticket, how does the cameraman get onboard?

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 21:13 (nineteen years ago) link

The theory i have heard is that the show actually buys up the tickets except for 2 or 4 or whatever for the team members.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 22:13 (nineteen years ago) link

Wait, the show buys up what tickets? All the tickets on each plane? All the available tickets?

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 22:20 (nineteen years ago) link

a 'making of' this show would be pretty great i bet

jones (actual), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 22:22 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah, I think they might actually buy tickets up on different flights to make it harder for people. I read this somewhere. I have no idea if it's true. But it would explain how they have a cameraman on every sold-out flight.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 22:22 (nineteen years ago) link

I think I might have even read it on the link that someone posted up top to some travel blog.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 22:23 (nineteen years ago) link

So, if the flights are sold out, and no one else can get a ticket, how does the cameraman get onboard?

This is explained in detail on one of the TV Without Pity forums. Basically, each team has two support staff who work sound, cameras, and have the all-important Amazing Credit Cards to purchase airline tickets with. Each team of "two" is actually four.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 22:25 (nineteen years ago) link

aha!

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 22:28 (nineteen years ago) link

So long as the competitors don't get stuck with the bill.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 23:05 (nineteen years ago) link

So if each team of two is actually a team of four, what happens when a team finds a flight but only two spots are open? Does that mean they don't get to fly because there's not room for their camera folk? That seems really lame.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Thursday, 9 September 2004 03:31 (nineteen years ago) link

why are you guys so hung up on the seats on the flight thing? you have to accept that a certain amount of the show is NOT REAL. it's fixed. besides, it's a jerry bruckheimer production, dudes. i think the cash behind this show can swing a couple of extra seats between singapore and mumbai when they need to. this is the guy who made flashdance!

(also, a lot of times they just show people taking their seats on the plane... so the camera crew wouldn't neccessarily have to be there for the whole flight as long as another crew was waiting at their arrival point)

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Thursday, 9 September 2004 12:50 (nineteen years ago) link

I want to see a Making Of... too.

I never watch the scenes for the next episode because I like to be surprised.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 9 September 2004 12:54 (nineteen years ago) link

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE how this is used as an example of Jerry Bruckheimer being able to get ANYTHING DONE. And it's true. And when anyone ever doubts the abilities of Jerry Bruckheimer again this will be my one and only argument. What are a few plane seats to Jerry Bruckheimer? HE MADE FLASHDANCE, PEOPLE!

ah, nice to hear scott. i'm at my most profound when musing about the amazing race, i think.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Thursday, 9 September 2004 17:14 (nineteen years ago) link

Aside from a Making Of, I also wish AR had a final episode where they have the full cast to see what's happened to people. I mean, you see them on the show and see the problems with some of the relationships, but then never hear anything about them again.

Also, anyone hear that Amazing Race 6 is starting in a few weeks? Seems a bit too soon to me, but I hope it's as good as this season.

The ox thing? Tell me more, please.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 02:45 (nineteen years ago) link

Every other team had one person leading the ox through a muddy field in order to dig up a rope with the next clue on it. That way they could control the ox's movements and make its pattern sort of logical and orderly. Christie, for whatever reason, stood on the side and let Colin try to both steer the ox and look for the clue, and the ox just went everywhere, including leaving the field.

Colin was not very happy at this development.

I can just picture the old Dude on his cloud whipping up a batch of lightning bolts and pausing to look down, "what's that? chip needs some help climbing a rope ladder? I'm on it!" or "starving orphans of the world, you're just going to have to wait. the model with the nice hair on Amazing Race needs a hand finding an envelope in a puddle of muck."

I'm sad that the finale is next week and we'll be playing a show instead of sitting in front of the tv. ha ha... Anyway, only a week to figure out how to use the VCR to record something. It's our own reality show test of sorts. Ready, set, go!

Nick gets pissed off when he drives, but I get worried sick when I drive which makes him upset as a passenger. Plus, he hates flying. So, yeah, I guess it wouldn't work out. :-(

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 15:48 (nineteen years ago) link

I would insist that we take the train everywhere, even from like Russia to New Zealand. We would be three weeks behind all the other teams.

Yeah, you should memorize how to say that in every language, just to be on the safe side. You never know where the game will take you!

I totally agree about the yield bit - it's part of the game, so get over it.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 16:03 (nineteen years ago) link

Chip & Kim won basically because of fog, but I haveta fault C&C for not checking in during the night to make sure their flight was still on schedule.

COLIN: I'M KNEELING!

COLIN: I'M PROPOSING TO YOU! GOD!
CHRISTIE: The others didn't have this much trouble.
COLIN: God, I hate you so much.
CHRISTIE: You are so important to me. Now give me that ring.
COLIN: I'M PUTTING IT ON YOUR FINGER!
CHRISTIE: It's very important that you put that ring on my finger right now.
COLIN: I LOVE YOU, BITCH!
CHRISTIE: I love this ring.

TORONTO (CP) — The province of Alberta was ready for its TV close-up and while it was only minutes of airtime on the hit reality show The Amazing Race, those involved are pleased with the results of their behind-the-scenes efforts.
Tuesday night’s finale of the fifth instalment of the Emmy-winning series — which aired on CBS and CTV — saw the three remaining teams of globe-trotting contestants land in Calgary to dash through two days of gruelling contests on mountains and snow runs before flying out again and off to Dallas for the $1-million finish.
The Canadian leg of the reality adventure was contracted to Alberta-based The Producers, Ltd., a company that has experience dealing with celebrities who like to sneak out the back door. But helping to arrange the hectic 48 hours in Calgary was their most ambitious assignment yet.
Producer Nives Lever says the Amazing Race officials laid the groundwork for the Canadian leg in November and December. Then the contestants arrived in Canada one morning last February with about 50 crew members who then joined 100 crew hired locally. And somehow, in collaboration with Canada Customs, tourism officials and broadcast unions like ACTRA and IATSE, they managed to ensure not only a smooth operation but kept the whole thing secret via scores of non-disclosure agreements.
“We’re certainly used to productions of a large size,” says Lever. “I think what made this so different or unique for us was that it was live.”
For two days, cameras rolled live on tape with no chance for retakes and no backup as the teams followed their clues and jumped through the appropriate hoops.
“After watching the program and seeing what happened at the airport in Calgary and how the flights were delayed and how fog changed the whole thing, we couldn’t have scripted it better for the dramatic,” says Lever. “It was amazing.”
In a world sensitized to security issues in the wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, extra precautions had to be taken with contestants speeding through airport terminals. Co-producer Eda Lischman says one person spent three months just handling immigration issues.
“And we couldn’t tell them what we were doing. . .we certainly couldn’t tell them that we were having Amazing Race contestants and crews coming across the border.”
Lever says that because of their considerable advance work, there were no foul-ups and in fact Producers, Ltd. was told by the Amazing Race people that Canada proved to be one of the best experiences they had had, bar none.
“They felt it was handled well, organized. We had to do a lot of diplomatic work. I did nothing but diplomacy between Tourism Canada, Travel Alberta, Parks Canada, U.S. Customs.”
Lever says similar companies are hired locally in each country seen on The Amazing Race and that means some 2,000 people around the world contribute to the show.
“The most important thing for us is that we could show off a corner of Alberta,” says Lever. “That we could somehow tell millions of people around the world through the vehicle of this show, what a fabulous location we live and thrive in.”

Then the contestants
arrived in Canada one morning last February with about 50 crew members who then joined 100 crew hired locally.

150 people to shoot six people, that staggers me, mostly because it's so easy to forget while watching it that the racers aren't completely on their own.

Huk-L, Thursday, 23 September 2004 19:44 (nineteen years ago) link

Finally got to watch this last night, and even though I accidently found out ahead of time who won (DAMN YOU CHICAGO SUN-TIMES AND YOUR HUGE SPOILER HEADLINES!) it was still very satisfying. Chip & Kim seem like genuinely nice people, they were the only team who actually appreciated all that they were getting to see, and I was so proud of Chip when he finally was slightly conniving by telling the Bible models that it wasn't the right card by the flag. Yeah, sure, they basically only won through sheer luck, but it was still awesome.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 24 September 2004 13:36 (nineteen years ago) link

I still think that Brandon and Nichole were the most compelling team, because of the contrast between the two. Colin and Christie are both assholes and deserve each other, but while Nichole seems shallow, bitchy, motivated solely by money, and made Brandon do every single roadblock by himself, Brandon actually seems like a really nice, caring guy (despite his dimness). I felt really bad for him a number of times, but especially when Nichole broke down over the lame bike thing and he was trying so hard not to get mad.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 24 September 2004 13:39 (nineteen years ago) link

Whatever, Brandon's a moron. Did you get the feeling that Nichole was into God because Brandon's into God?

Huh. Interesting. Where did you read this? That might explain why C&C weren't (apparently) very close behind Chip and Kim, even though they were just 10 minutes apart before their respective cab rides to the finish line.

I can just imagine the Colin outburst we missed!

Didn't Brandon make Nichole do the caviar roadblock and maybe the one just before (the Egyptian cave descent)? I was thinking he was a wimp then for making her do the hard stuff.

And I heard about the cab getting a flat on another discussion board, but the poster said it was noted on Television Without Pity.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 15:51 (nineteen years ago) link

Ned, do you even own a t.v.? if you don't, you should get one. and a remote-control. and cable. and some snacks. and an easy chair.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 15:56 (nineteen years ago) link

The stunts aren't usually that wacky, they usually just involve trying to get to a certain place, but at least one team inevitably has horrible luck and gets a flat tire or a slow driver or something and has an emotional breakdown and yell at each other. It's great!

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 15:59 (nineteen years ago) link

Ned, do you even own a t.v.?

Of course! It's a great video monitor.

at least one team inevitably has horrible luck and gets a flat tire or a slow driver or something and has an emotional breakdown and yell at each other

Well that's no fun!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 16:05 (nineteen years ago) link

You'd be surprised. Basically, the whole reason the show is good is because it's well-edited, put together for the maximum amount of ridiculousness and excitment. Reality TV is all about the editing, and Amazing Race has the best.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 16:36 (nineteen years ago) link

For this reason, descriptions of what happens don't really do it justice.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 16:36 (nineteen years ago) link

Hm, that makes for a good explanation! I'd be up for watching some sort of highlight DVD, I think I've mentioned. But I'm still extremely against the committing of time to a regular schedule of TV watching (even in a 'have it on the TiVo but must watch it at some point to avoid falling behind'), as I've muttered on other threads. Work schedules take up enough time, let the rest be flexible!

(The 'no fun' observation also is because it would be extremely unfun to argue with Spencer! Now if the two of us were venting our contempt on someone else, a different story.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 17:07 (nineteen years ago) link

Yellowshit is an ASS-HOLE. That shit's going to get old fast.

Seems like most of the teams are squabblers. Do they always start out that way and then normalize, or is this a particularly awful group? Also, quite a few of them were on the trip to work out their relationship problems. Yeah - great place to do that! You don't go on Amazing Race to improve your relationship (.. you go on to ruin it.)

I'm going to have to kill yellowshirt.

It's funny that some couple-halves say, "you have to slow down so I can keep up with you" and others say "you have to speed up to keep up with me"

When will the teams get it through their heads that alliances are for other reality shows like Survivor and Big Brother, but that here it's every team for themselves? Alliances make no sense.

Maria D. (Maria D.), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 13:33 (nineteen years ago) link

Is there a rule that you have to stand and read the clue for the camera? Cuz like, I f I were in Chicago and I read "take a plane .." I'd start running for the el to get to the airport and I'd read the rest of the clue on the train. Or at the very least, walk and read at the same time.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 13:47 (nineteen years ago) link

When will the teams get it through their heads that alliances are for other reality shows like Survivor and Big Brother, but that here it's every team for themselves? Alliances make no sense.

Alliances absolutely make sense at the beginning of the game; if you can band together with three or for other teams and sabotage at least four other teams out of the compatition, you're putting yourself into a better position later on in the game.

Also, wrestler girl needs to learn how to count. She also needs to take a page from the Chip and Kim book of strategy: Don't finish last.

This was awesome, especially when they started out in Chicago. OH MY GOD! WHERE IS THE BLUE LINE?!?!?!?! I just knew at least one team would go to a station without the blue line. It's just funny to see them all freaking out over the el. And then when they get on the train, they show it speeding down the tunnel, but we all know it's going pretty slow and they'll be on there for quite a while before they get to O'Hare. Good times.

The other funny thing about the Chicago/el stuff is that they edit it so that it seems really crucial which train to the airport the teams get on, but at that time of the day, the blue line to O'Hare is going to be coming at least every 5 minutes.

The main thing I'm worried about right now is that NONE of the teams seem that likeable. The Brooklyn bros were ok, but now they're gone. MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 04:09 (nineteen years ago) link

From The New York Post:

January 4, 2005 -- IT was all an act, claims the abusive, wife-shoving "Amazing Race" contestant who has angered millions with his appalling behavior on the popular reality show.
"We went in being the villains. We went in playing it over the top, and CBS kind of helped it along with their storyline," racer Jonathan Baker, 42, told "Access Hollywood."

"I've had to do a lot of apologizing to a lot of people because they actually think it's real," he said.

During a recent episode, Baker became so angry with his wife, Victoria Fuller, for hampering him during a challenge that he shoved her — hard — as she cried.

"And yeah, some of it's real," he told the TV show. "But you know at the end of the day we really wanted to play it campy, over the top, you know. But we do love each other and we are together. We're still together."

The "I was acting," excuse is just the latest of several Baker has used to explain away his abusive behavior during the show, in which he verbally assualts Fuller, a former Playboy model, and other contestants.

In an interview Baker gave before the latest season of "Amazing Race" began, Baker — knowing how likely it was that he would appear to be a jerk on the show — first blamed the editing of the series. Later, he claimed his behavior was due to stress, a rare medical condition and the prescription drugs used to treat it.

"Amazing Race" producers were so horrified by his antics that the show's chief, Bertram van Munster, even took Baker aside several times during the taping last summer and told him to "chill out."

Worse, the Web site and Baker's other attempts to explain his behavior could land the foul-tempered reality fiend in even more trouble with CBS, since he is prohibited from speaking publicly until he either wins the game or is kicked off. "

aimurchie, Wednesday, 5 January 2005 10:54 (nineteen years ago) link

Hahahaha, "Worse,[...]"!

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 13:03 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah, he's come up with a million different excuses for his behavior in interviews, so the "it was all deliberate!" explanation rings rather hollow now.

I was sad to see Gus and Hera go, but they always picked the wrong challenge. Though I'm not sure if Gus would have fared much better at water polo.

I know it's cruel, but it was hilarious how Freddy was doing really well at the soup challenge until Kendra pointed out all the vomit on the floor.

Leon the Fatboy (Ex Leon), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 14:28 (nineteen years ago) link

THAT WAS AWESOME! (Also the fact that he puked back into his bowl.) (Also, the shell-shocked, horrified expressions that began creeping over the musicians' faces as they watched Victoria slurp-and-purge-and-wail.)

BOOOO.
They were the most entertaining of the bunch. I like Kris and Jon, but they're bland and drama-free.

Still, the way Jon and Victoria went out was fitting. Their weekly shouting match caused them to lose their concentration and misread the directions. Something like that was bound to happen.

It was also nice to see that the Ethiopians (unlike the Senegalese) have passed Kendra's litmus test and are worthy of continuing to breed.

At first, I was critical of Kris and Jon's blandness as well -- if you were going to come up with a stereotypical (in a 'good' way) liberal couple, they'd be it -- but compared to everyone else, their niceness makes up for being so perfectly boring.

Married couple kicked off The Amazing Race after bickering around globe
NEW YORK (AP) — Married entrepreneurs Jonathan Fuller and Victoria Baker bickered their way across the globe on CBS’ The Amazing Race and were eliminated during Tuesday’s episode.
“I knew that he was going to be over the top. I know Jon very well,” Baker told The Associated Press on Wednesday. “I know he can be very enthusiastic. I was a little taken aback by his intensity. It was so off the charts.”
Fuller went into the competition with hopes of being the show’s villain, but he had no idea “it would look like that.” Most of “that” were arguments and a shoving incident with his wife.
“I turned off my compassion,” said Fuller. “I pushed the envelope too far. I learned a lot about myself. I’m deeply sorry if I offended people out there. I look at what I saw up there, and I didn’t like the person that I saw.”
Viewers, and host Phil Keoghan, were shocked when Fuller, 42, shoved the 32-year-old Baker after a footrace spat in Berlin during the fifth leg of the race. After the incident, Fuller declared he was done with the competition, something that wasn’t seen on the show.
“I did quit the race,” Fuller told the AP. “I said, ‘It’s done.’ I was mad at how it was handled. I was mad at Phil. He kept asking me these questions. I was mad at myself. I was mad at the whole situation.”
Seven hours later, Fuller changed his mind.
“It was a flip of a switch,” he said. “Well into the morning, (the producers) said it was up to me if I showed up or not. I have to say the love of The Amazing Race put me back on it.”
“It was definitely a learning experience,” said Baker. “You have to see yourself at your worst to be yourself at your best. I hope America gives us a chance. Jon and I been together a long time. Eight years is like a lifetime if you live in Los Angeles.”

OK, as a Chicagoan, I am wondering what the fuck is up with the O'Hare CTA person telling them to take the Blue Line in, get off at Chicago, and walk "2 blocks" to Michigan. The Blue Line intersects with Chicago at Milwaukee, which is at least a mile away from Michigan. Next thing I know, they're getting off on State and seemingly right there near the Water Tower.

Also, they must have had to do some task near the Chicago Fire Academy or Manny's Deli on the near SW side, which was not aired, because they were near Jefferson & Roosevelt when they hailed their cabs to Gino's East, not anywhere near the Water Tower.

Props to the teams for finding that park at the end, though; I would have guessed Chinatown, but I had never heard of that place before.

KKKendra and Freddy won, which is a bummer. John and Kris were so obviously the nicer, stronger team.

But tonight's episode was worth it to see Dave Grohl Hayden losing her shit.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 04:31 (nineteen years ago) link

After last season, I actually thought a team I liked could win. Stupid me. Stupid Kendra.

Huk-L, Wednesday, 9 February 2005 07:02 (nineteen years ago) link

In a (probably futile) attempt to temper our sadness at the amazing racist winning the Amazing Race, I offer teh funnies:

- Adam (to Kris): "You in raging bitch mode is like her..." gestures at Rebecca "...on a good day". Cue hurt and bewildered look on Rebecca's face (and yet, stangely, no follow-up).

- Rebecca (rowing), to "formerly dating" teammate: "Nice long strokes, Adam" (Heh.)

- Racist Kendra, upon arriving at the 2,000 year-old Terracotta Army in Xi'an, China, an archaelogical wonder of the world: "Do we have to dig, honey?" (yeah, just like you had to tear down the fucking wall in Berlin, you twat.)

- Weird conversation about language differences between Kris and Jon: Kris decides that Chinese isn't Germanic, like English, and blurts:

"Babe, I love you"

Jon inexplicably says: "Can you please fetch me some water?"

(I fully accept that this entire exchange probably went right over my head, though.)

- The Official Ugly American Moment: Cabbie leads Aaron and Hayden far off the beaten track. They've had enough, and want to bail. Naturally, he still wants the fare. It looks like they refuse, and he hangs onto Aaron's pack as he tries to walk away. Cue Ugly American: "Touch me and I'll kick your ass!" Ha! Cut to Aaron floating face down in the Yangtze (a small part of this summary is an untruth).

- Rebecca, when confronted with an array of padlocks and only one key: "Very Zen, isn't it?" Followed quickly by: "Open! Open! Open!"

- Hayden has a weird breakdown and Aaron shrieks: "I hate China!!!" Heh.

- Kendra: "The Year 2". WTF?

- Rebecca: "He has three testicles!" Ha ha ha...

- Adam, in despair: "You're very mean. Do you understand the word mean? You are very cold."

- Kendra, after Freddy tried to get a cop to escort their cab to their destination: "Honey, it's not an EMERGENCY to a POLICE OFFICER!!!"

A: I don't eat tomatoes
R: I don't eat cheese
A: I don't eat tomatoes
R: I don't eat cheese

Wow, what a wild television ride. I hate that Kendra, the "Ghetto Africa" woman, won this thing, though.

I am wondering what the fuck is up with the O'Hare CTA person telling them to take the Blue Line in, get off at Chicago, and walk "2 blocks" to Michigan

They cut some of it .. I thought I heard her say take the train downtown to the Howard Train and take it to Chicago.. Which is also a bit wrong because does anything refer to the Red Line as the Howard Train anymore?

I thought Hayden and AAAARON! (I can't think his name without hearing her voice shrieking it) should have let Rebecca and Adam hit the mat before them. They were the ones who quit, but they made R&A hear Phil say "you're the last team to arrive". Then AARON!! had to steal R&A's thunder about making it into the final 3 by popping the question.
By the end, I liked R&A a lot more than before. They both seem to have grown up during the race.

I'm loving this.

You will all bow to the awesomeness of Rob and Amber, who are vying with the gay boyfriends and the mother-gay son combo for the most entertaining team. The hillbillies and the blondes aren't far behind.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 03:12 (nineteen years ago) link

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 04:05 (nineteen years ago) link

I watched this for little while tonight, during the zip line thing. I feel that I'm missing something. It was dreadfully boring. There's a an Ashlee Simpson kind of vibe to it, they're all dashing around through gorgeous and inexplicable terrain, going "oh are we supposed to get on that thingie? GRASSIASS." Maybe some of the other stunts are better/more humiliating?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 04:19 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah, the part with the zip line isn't representative of the rest of the show.

A few of the teams are able to speak Spanish.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 04:26 (nineteen years ago) link

Maybe it's because it followed so closely on the heels of the last and the big whiz-bang finale, or maybe because it was two hours long, but this felt awfully tedious.

Huk-L, Wednesday, 2 March 2005 07:12 (nineteen years ago) link

For those who couldn't get enough of Road Rules.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 07:16 (nineteen years ago) link

You really should watch the whole thing, Traacer; you tuned in at probably the most boring portion of the show and missed all of the llama snot.

I am very sad that the hillbillies lost out, partially because of the potential entertainment factor and partially because of how evilly ironic it would have been for the POW to get cut on the very first episode. I am also intrigued that the two biggest "stories" (in-vitro Enron casualty couple and "help the troops" ex-POW) are at the back of the pack; I wonder if the producers allowed for this possibility when casting the race?

Also, imagine a celebrity Amazing Race with the proceeds going to charity! It's too bad MTV can't swing the budget to do a RW/RR Amazing Race (although they kind of had a mini-version with Battle Of The Seasons).

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 14:36 (nineteen years ago) link

That one hillbilly dude spoke the most fucked up Spanish I've ever heard! He still had a hillbilly accent! They were funny, it's a shame they lost, where the two blondes got through.

I love those two girls that came in first! They spoke Spanish very well, and even when they got angry at each other, they were sweeties.

That dude Rob is an ASSHATFACEJERKWAD and I hope he loses and they let his girlfriend keep going. Say "suck it up" one more time dillhole!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 14:44 (nineteen years ago) link

But they're evil! They're all kissy-kissy when things are going well, and then when they were doing the llama they showed no team spirit when it actually mattered. I suspect they're sort of a Chuck & Buck-style couple.

Huk-L, Wednesday, 2 March 2005 14:49 (nineteen years ago) link

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 16:36 (nineteen years ago) link

Why would anyone (besides dude named Meredith and his wife [I can't believe there's a man named MEREDITH]) choose the llamas over the baskets? That was a grand display of RETARDOCITY on the parts of the llama choosers. And none of them even told any of the llamas to "come get some HAM"!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 16:42 (nineteen years ago) link

The older couple were the only ones who did the llamas correctly (which figured heavily into their surprising-to-me 6th place finish).

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 16:48 (nineteen years ago) link

We thought there was a hard and fast rule that the first option (i.e. llamas) is always quicker and easier than the second one. Maybe the producers are mixing it up better this time.

I bet the producers were bumming that the hillbillies lost.

Maria D. (Maria D.), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 16:51 (nineteen years ago) link

Huk-L, Wednesday, 2 March 2005 16:52 (nineteen years ago) link

I think the producers were thinking the altitude would be a bigger factor than it ended up being; it seemed like only Deana ws really hit by it of the people who chose the baskets.

Ray and Deanna are Jonathan and Victoria (from last season) waiting to happen. Ray is a bit psycho.

Deanna + (I forget her partner's name) : their CONSTANT harping on about Rob & Amber ("Robandamber are ahead of us now, where are Robandamber, we're two minutes behind Robandamber ...") is 10000000000000X more annoying than anything Rob and Amber could possibly do.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 17:24 (nineteen years ago) link

Seriously. Don't worry about what the other teams are doing, just focus on racing.

Leon the Fatboy (Ex Leon), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 18:08 (nineteen years ago) link

I am convinced both girl/girl teams are gay. Debbie and Bianca are way too touchy feely. Actually, it seems like one of them is way more touchy than the other. The other one, the blondes, their bio on the cbs page makes it seem like they are together too. Well not really, I am just picking up on that one works and one is a stay at home mom. But who knows maybe she's making bank on the child support.

I like the out gay couple Lynn and Alex, I feel they are this year's Oswald and Danny. I loved those guys.

I like Rob and Amber. I am actually pulling for them. I was on the fence about them before, but everyone's obsession with them is pushing me towards them.

I'm happy with this season so far...There are a few times I can see liking.

Huk-L, Wednesday, 2 March 2005 19:46 (nineteen years ago) link

Maybe he's PRETNEDING to be gay, yeah, that's the ticket! So then when he's all like "hellO LADIES" when his balls/voice drops, they're all like "oh we thought you were gay!" and then they all lez up, except there's a dick in there somewhere too.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 19:48 (nineteen years ago) link

Maria D. (Maria D.), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 20:02 (nineteen years ago) link

The fatbilly with the goatee spoke Portuguese, which is why it may have sounded like weird Spanish.

Ray and Deanna are Jonathan and Victoria (from last season) waiting to happen. Ray is a bit psycho.

Definitely. The producers seem to think now that they HAVE to have this sort of a team on every season now. Unfortunately, they didn't pick a real interesting cockface this time around; he may be a monstrous jerkoff, but it's not really translating through the TV all that well -- he's coming off rather bland in fact.

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 20:31 (nineteen years ago) link

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 19:09 (nineteen years ago) link

i missed last nite's episode (one of the only times ever that i've missed this stupid show.) did anything memorable happen?

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 17 March 2005 01:15 (nineteen years ago) link

- Debbie and Bianca started the episode by driving to a hotel to get directions. While they were there, Rob and Amber (who crashed at the hotel for a few hours of sleep) stole their cab. Once they found a new cab and made it to the car park where they had to pick up a car to drive into Argentina, they spent two hours driving the wrong way before figuring out that they had to turn around and go the other way.

- There was an eating Roadblock where the racers had to eat 4 pounds of meat; failing to do so would give you a 4 hour penalty from the arrival point of the next team at the Roadblock. Rob bailed on the task pretty quickly, then talked TWO other teams (Ray & Deana, Meredeth & Gretchen) into bailing as well, in the process ensuring at least an hour and a half lead over said bailing teams and pretty much guaranteeing that he and Amber would not be eliminated this leg.

- Lynn and Alex won the leg narrowly over Uchenna and Joyce; Uchenna out-ate Lynn on the Roadblock but U&J got lost on the way to the Pit Stop.

- Susan and Patrick continued to suck ass by first not figuring out how to get out of Santiago for an hour, then by Patrick being the second-to-last person to arrive at the Roadblock and then verge on wimping out of eating the meat.

- Patrick only ate the meat after Bianca and Debbie finally showed up and Bianca totally shamed him by chowing down so quickly that she cut a two hour lead down to something on the order of 10 minutes. Alas, it still wasn't close enough and the secret lovers (yes, that's what they are) were PHILIMINATED.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 17 March 2005 02:39 (nineteen years ago) link

Rob seemed a lot dumber and scarier on Survivor than he does on the Amazing Race

Eh? Rob owned Survivor when he was on it (Survivor All-Stars), and now he's owning Amazing Race.

On paper (whatever that means, just go with the term for now) R&A are the clear front-runners and nobody is even close to them. Teams that were looking sneaky and dangerous in the first couple of weeks are now gone (Secret Lesbians, Susan and Patrick). The brothers are strong, but they're too prone to major fuckups (looks like next week will bring the fuckup to end all fuckups). The grandparents have no chance. Ray=Jonathan from last season, except that Jon was an asshole but he was also a very good racer, whereas Ray is just an asshole. The Gay Boys are the most annoying thing on TV right now, competing with R&A in silly paddle races within the race that exist only in their own mind and then bragging about it for four hours afterward.

Rob and Amber are the shit.

Ugh. I should stop watching now, I suppose. Uchenna & Joyce are alright, but seem to be a little sloppy as racers. POW & co are sp boring I forget they exist. And Rob & Amber .. I kind of admire Rob's spirit, but I think he's smug & too often fucks over another team without really any gain.

I didn't watch Survivor All-Stars. The first one Rob was on, he was offensive. I bet he's scary when drunk and single. His original audition tape for Survivor was endearing. He didn't say much, just filmed himself getting into his refrigerator and looking goofy.

Maria D. (Maria D.), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 18:49 (nineteen years ago) link

That sounds about right. Oddly enough, one of those teams was nearly eliminated in Week 1. Neither team is particularly strong, but their chemistry is solid, they're consistent and they don't beat themselves, which can't be said for any of the other remaining teams (except R&A, of course).

POW & Beauty Queen.

Can we get scare quotes around "Beauty Queen"? After Christie, Nicole and then Kendra, this year's pageant chick is a big step down in looks.

Also, Uchenna and POW are both tremendous goobers, though U. hasn't done anything dickfaced enough to warrant anything beyond mild amusement.

I HATE Rob and Amber. probably from watching "All Stars" and having to listen to his "Ambah...Ambah..." for weeks. Also, of course they're feeling comfortable in the race - they already have well over a million in the bank.
I'm rooting for Uchenna and Joyce - they seem to be enjoying parts of the race, which always makes me feel better. Their experiences which led them to compete are compelling - they deserve the money, if you want to equate a huge failure in capitalism with the notion that they can get it all back by a television show. Which, somehow, my mind grapples with but...then I eventually give up and enjoy the show.
Abusive guy is no Jonathan - lack of blue hair vs. no hair being key - but his comments this week were pretty much insane. "I don't wanna be lumped in with some seventy year old dude!" Sorry, it's called ageing, and eventually, if you get off the steroids, you might be a seventy year old dude.
I think Robambah are going to lose, eventually, because the overwhelming smugness is just too much. The Philimenator doesn't seem all that pleased to see them.
Best Rob quote of the week: "I was bohn with a, um, lucky hohseshoe...up my ass!" (Then kisses Ambah, who giggles and fake hits him.)

It really was the best possible outcome. And the way it happened was SOOOO sweet.

What's ILE's take on Amber & Rob re: Pull Over-gate? Should they have stopped? They could have at least yelled out the window like the other teams did, although the difference between doing that and just driving by was minimal in terms of the outcome of the stage.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 03:13 (nineteen years ago) link

This show is great! I had no idea. I didn't watch Survivor at all, but Rob totally rules it. I love that guy. He's the intercontinental champion of all Massholes with mad Boston driving skillz.

Between this and the dude on local public access wearing a Yankees Suck t-shirt and a Red Sox cap and ranting about how unfair it is they charge ya long distance to call from Prahvidence to Wahwick Rhodylin, it was a wicked awesome night of TV.

daria g (daria g), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 03:56 (nineteen years ago) link

Great ending to the episode. Hopefully Deanna will get away from Ray. At least in the last season, Jonathan always claimed he still loved his wife. Ray didn't make any bones about the fact that Deanna just didn't cut it for him. Very very sad.

As for Rob and Amber, they totally should have pulled over and rolled down the window. Losing 30 seconds in a race to pretend they have a heart wouldn't have killed them.

Jonathan (Jonathan), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 12:00 (nineteen years ago) link

Lynn & Alex: "There's no room.." (Classic, btw)
Rob: "OK, we'll play it like that then. No more Mr. nice guy."

Riiiiiight.

I'd love to see Rob and amber come last on a week when it was non-elimination. First off, none of the teams will help them, and secondly, if they went out begging for money, their "fans" that they seem to find everywhere might be a little taken back, since they have a million dollars. Then again, people seem willing to do anything for these two.

The brothers almost made me cry last night when they finished! And so did Meredith and Gretchen!

I love how Ray and Deanna, even WITH that fast forward, lost, seemingly only because Ray is a douche and was more interested in making Deanna feel bad about herself than grinding corn. What a fuckstick!

Oh, and I love how dude kept saying "Meredith and whatshisname" and finally his wife was like "Meredith is the GUY".

well, rob and amber not stopping WAS pretty bad. i like how in the beginning the editors and producers did everything possible to make rob and amber seem really likable, and now that all the possible villains have been eliminated, they're setting them up to be the show's assholes. granted i don't think it would take much. i liked them a lot in the beginning but now they're starting to irritate me. amber's fawning looks at rob whenever he says something remotely cocky/controversial are getting stale.

i disagree! if anything i'd like to see people be a little bit MORE cutthroat -- that's what i liked so much about rob and amber early on. and to be honest i don't understand why everyone's giving the old people money -- it's not like they got mugged, they came in last.

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 15:22 (nineteen years ago) link

I think that if they had the same attitude as Rob and Amber ("this is a race and we'll do what we have to to win") rather than the attitude they have ("we hate Rob and Amber because they eat kittens and they already won a million dollars"), Lynn and Alex would not be tiresome douchebags who should fall off of a cliff.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 15:31 (nineteen years ago) link

He didn't act the victim. Obviously anyone would be pissed off about the taxi incident, so he said his piece about it and then carried on racing. OTOH, when the Gay Boys think somebody has looked at them funny, they complain about it for the next two episodes.

"We would have come in second but we stopped unlike Rob and Amber -- THEY HAVE NO SOUL!!!"

Um, no. Setting aside the screwing over vis a vis the taxi incident, you would have finished in exactly the same spot. The difference between R&A rolling down the window and not stopping is 30 seconds. The difference between doing Water and doing Food at the detour looked to be about an hour.

Back on topic: Was it really fair for them to give the dudes a new rover? When they crashed it, I thought, "Well, I guess the old couple aren't getting eliminated after all." I mean, I'm glad they're still in it, but should there have been a penalty? Also, why the hell did the old couple decide to go for the cave task? I didn't think they'd make it out of there alive!

Whoa! I thought for sure that Dudes were eliminated because I thought I saw one of them talking about going home! It was sweeeet seeing them SMOKE Ray during the footrace. I originally didn't like them and their Neander-brows, but then they pull some drama like this and are actually pretty funny sometimes.

As for Rambah: Amber is completely riding on Rob's coattails. Rob remains mad skillz; saying that Meredith pushed Gretchen down in the caves!! As for not slowing down, he saw that there were two teams there and thus knew that whoever had overturned did have some help; if there was only that single team, then slowing down to yell out the window would've been appropriate -- which, mind, is what the other teams did.

dave225 (Dave225), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 14:08 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah, the second "Alex" should be "Lynn", or as I now like to think of him, "That Doughy Waste Of Space Who Should Be Beaten With Tire Irons Until He Bleeds From His Eyes, Preferably By His Infinitely-More-Likable Boyfriend As That Would Satisfy My Sense Of Dramatic Irony".

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 14:09 (nineteen years ago) link

Gretchen was getting on my nerves a little bit but she and Meredith really kick ass and are far and away the toughest older couple to ever appear on the show (no one can compare to the previous two seasons' oldsters, though). Gretchen is made of iron and, screechy voice aside, I'm kind of in awe of her.

I just can't hate Rob and Amber! I see exactly why I should, but I can't do it; they're too good at both the tasks and manipulating the other players.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 14:12 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah. But then Uchenna basically said the same thing. Though he put it in a much more more palatable way, and he said it more because of his family than the colour of his skin.

Huk-L, Wednesday, 6 April 2005 14:13 (nineteen years ago) link

There's a gigantic and obvious semantic difference between "I can do this; I've seen people do this hundreds of times" and "They can balance things on their heads because they were born to do it; we weren't".

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 14:16 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah, that's what I was trying to say.
I was more impressed that Uchenna did it so well because he's a man, and that's traditionally something done by women, who I always thought had a better sense of balance because of their curves and stuff. But I guess having seen it done hundreds of times trumps having curves.

Huk-L, Wednesday, 6 April 2005 14:21 (nineteen years ago) link

am i the only one who thought that the balancing thing didn't look as hard as all the quitters made it seem? uchenna was totally otm - "just think about the water". i like that couple more and more every week. too bad about the brothers. they proved to be likable idiots in the end, like hello, you're in a race, why the hell are you stopping for a warddrobe change? also, i'm glad army guy and pageant girl are fighting, they seem a little less dauntingly all-american. also, how meredith and gretchen continue to place is one of the great mysteries of the world - they look completely lost out there.

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 14:32 (nineteen years ago) link

also, how meredith and gretchen continue to place is one of the great mysteries of the world

It's because GRETCHEN IS MADE OF IRON!

My favorite moment with them was when Gretchen kept going "HURRY HURRY HURRY" and Meredith finally said, "Geez, would you cut me some slack?" and she said, "Okay" and SAT BACK AND SHUT UP! That moment showed A) they've really been together for a really long time and know each other inside and out; B) there's a simultaneous sense of comfortableness and respect for each other; C) they are really equals in their relationship despite the way Gretchen's extroversion and Meredith's introversion might make you think that G dominates.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 14:38 (nineteen years ago) link

OTM

When will the other teammates get it through their heads that it doesn't help to yell "hurry hurry" at the person doing the roadblock? So much time is lost every season with one person asking the other to just shut up.

i keep waiting for meredith to mumble something about the government, or perry como, or his slippers. but you're right, i guess the two of them do have that well-worn dynamic. it's just that they never seem to do anything particularly quickly; half the time they don't even do it CORRECTLY, i'm shocked that they've outlasted all the teams they have.

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 14:46 (nineteen years ago) link

They will need to get a Fast Forward in order to win the race because they just aren't outrunning anyone, but they do rebound from mistakes remarkably quickly, moreso than oldsters past.

Rob and Amber are the greatest thing ever. When they passed the wrecked car last week, they moved into the pantheon of great reality characters.

M & G are unstoppable. I still am reeling from all the blood on Gretch's face last week. That was so awesome.

U & J are the only likeable ones, but they're also completely boring.

L & A are really irritating, but very entertaining nonetheless. When Lynn called that random black guy 'Tupac', he earned a special place in my cold, black heart.

Joyce looked really great without her hair, she shouldn't have worried about it at all.

Kelly is the plainest "beauty queen" they've had on the show. I really have to wonder how she won anything, because it's not as though she has a great personality either.

I imagine Ron gingerly landing his helicopter in enemy territory, strolling up to an Iraqi soldier and saying "Hey, take me as your prisoner. This military commitment thing is just not working out for me." Definitely the easiest way to get out of the army.

I think U&J just didn't want to be like that. And the cabbie didn't seem too upset about it. I mean, he didn't even get out of the car.

But why, in Jamaica, did U&J go to the airport first? I was screaming at them, "Just go do the challenge and get money as you go!"
The people in the airport who wouldn't give them money "No, I'm not into it" were fucking dicks.

Uchenna and Joyce Agu beat Rob and Amber, win 7th season of Amazing Race
By Derrik J. Lang
NEW YORK (AP) — Rob and Amber who? Married couple Uchenna and Joyce Agu outraced a pair of former Survivor contestants and a former prisoner of war and his beauty queen girlfriend to win the seventh edition of CBS’ The Amazing Race and the $1 million prize.
“It’s so amazing, if I can use that word,” Joyce told The Associated Press while grinning and giggling at the CBS season finale party.
Uchenna, 40, and Joyce, 44, from Houston, lugged boats in London, balanced water jugs on their heads in Africa and weighed complete strangers in Turkey — among other silly and strenuous tasks — in order to reach the finish line. Unlike previous seasons of Amazing Race, the racers didn’t travel around the globe, instead they semi-circled from Long Beach, Calif., through South America, Africa, India, Europe and the Caribbean to their final destination in Miami.
Because the Agus arrived last during a non-elimination leg before the home stretch, the couple was stripped of all their belongings and cash per the reality show’s nefarious rules. The Agus begged their way to the finish line but didn’t have enough money to pay their cab driver. Although they were only steps away the finish line and the $1 million prize, the Agus continued to beg from nearby strangers until they paid their cab fare.
“It was all about honour,” said Uchenna. “That cab driver was going to get his money.”
During an earlier stretch of the race in Jodhpur, India, Joyce agreed to shave her head as part of a Fast Forward challenge, allowing the Agus to skip to end of the leg. Uchenna cites that bold “sacrifice” as one of the turning points in the race.
“Once you shave it off, you have nothing to hide behind,” said Joyce. “People can actually see your soul. It’s so bizarre. I’m glad I did it.”
Much of the seventh season of Amazing Race was dominated by recently wed former Survivor contestants Rob “Boston Rob” Mariano, 29, and Amber Brkich, 26, who placed second in the race. Dating couple Ron Young, 28, from Villa Rica, Ga., and Kelly McCorkle, 26, from Greenville, S.C., placed third.
“We thought they were regular people like us,” said Joyce of Mariano and Brkich. “Really, it was an eye opening experience when we got on the race and saw that their notoriety was so amazing and people all over the world recognized them. We tried to ignore all that and do our own race just to spite what was happening with them and obviously it still paid off.”
Uchenna, an energy broker who once worked for Enron, and Joyce, a sales manager who once worked for WorldCom, plan to use their earnings for “bills, bills, bills” and to take their family on their own amazing trip. The Agus, who’ve tried unsuccessfully to have a child in the past, also said they would use their $1 million prize toward a baby.
“My doctors offered us a free round of in vitro (fertilization),” said Joyce. “So after all this is over, if it doesn’t work out, we have the money. We can adopt.”

Huk-L, Wednesday, 11 May 2005 14:51 (nineteen years ago) link

The most irritating part was when they were begging for the final cab fare... the guy who was like "Begging isn't the way to make money." God what an asshole.

The unhinged greiving Christians have become perhaps the best Amazing Race villains ever.

The fatherless family wrapped in insularity, jingoism, fear & self-righteousness, a faith that makes them special and everyone else contemptible... it's all there with a twist of old-fashioned socially maladjusted weirdo-ism. They are America.

They're also a nice switch from the typical bad-guy couple: borderline abusive steroid-rage dude w/ boob-job doormat girlfriend - of course wife-beaters are easy to hate - but getting the audience to hate unhinged grieving Christians, now that's an accomplishment. Hats off, Brookheimer, hats off.

The other thing that's great about the unhinged grieving Christians is that they're still alive in the game despite having NO apparent ability or common sense. It's almost like God is on their side, but what God would want such hateful minions? could it be... SATAN?

For whatever reason, finishing last in a non-elimination leg hasn't been much of an impediment in the last couple of seasons (much less so than it's intended to be).

It was obvious that the Weavers weren't getting eliminated because they kept showing all the other teams gloating about it.

This season kinda blows. It couldn't be saved even if the Bransen daughters stopped by my house for a foresome. Yes, I know that they all look just like their dad, and no, I don't really care.

Dan (And So On) Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 05:18 (eighteen years ago) link

They're not in Jonathan's league as far as detestibility goes. They're basically decent people with a penchant for moral smugness. Jonathan was a monster who verbally abused his wife 24/7 and constantly seemed on the verge of snapping and biting off her head at any moment.

And how quickly you forget KKKendra from the same season!

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 05:27 (eighteen years ago) link

biting off her head at any moment

I meant that literally. Like with his teeth.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 05:28 (eighteen years ago) link

They're basically decent people with a penchant for moral smugness.

Oh, this is not even remotely true. The Weavers are on a serious "we are innately superior to everyone around us, ergo things like basic common decency are just beneath us" trip.

KKKendra was awful but even she had the ability to be nice to others from time to time despite her loathesome qualities; the Weavers think it's okay to:

- denigrate someone solely for being a garbageman;
- denigrate people who are being nice to them because they have fake breasts;
- throw trash at out of their car at other cars;
- shout and scream all throughout an overnight bus ride;
- rebuff every friendly or polite overture with sneering contempt;
- basically treat anyone who isn't in their family or in a position to give them prizes like dogshit.

Not even Jonathon was as uniformly and consistently awful and he was literally the end of the world. The Weavers are absolutely worthless human beings who basically represent every single thing detestable and undesirable about American culture; give me the Paolos and their virtually unwatchable bickering any day over their pious self-involved bullshit because, at the end of the day, the Paulos recognize that they're wrong and dysfunctional and each of them saw things that really impressed them and gave them greater respect for their family members during the trip, showing that they are capable of learning how to break out of their destructive behavior patterns. The Weavers, meanwhile, are perfectly happy to wallow in smug, insufferable ignorance and deserve nothing but ridicule shunning for the rest of their days.

Dan (PS: I Hate Them So Much) Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 05:42 (eighteen years ago) link

I think you've overstated their behaviour with the last two points in your list. The first four are obv. true, which makes them very rude people. I'm sure the Paolo boys endured lots of teasing when they were kids because their dad was (is) a garbage man. Kids are supposed to grow out of that kind of behaviour, but the immature Weaver teens haven't. The mom raised three spoiled kids and taught them to hide behind a veneer of being "good Christians". In their suburban microbubble I'm sure they live very happy lives with their like-minded friends. I think they're a more "typical" family than you have implied, although maybe that was exactly your point when you wrote that they "represent every single thing detestable and undesirable about American culture."

Jonathan had his nice moments (i.e. the way he treated children at various points during the race) but he was essentially a schizophrenic, extremely unsettled person. Victoria kept saying stuff like "Jonathan is great around kids, but I'm not sure I want to have children with him." On a national TV show!

On a side note, I respected Jonathan for being a GREAT competitor -- he and Victoria were a dangerous team who eliminated themselves once J lost his head and made a dumb mistake by not reading a clue properly (this sort of mistake was inevitable, really). The Weavers are dumbasses who are still on the show because the other teams are that much more incompetent than they are. This definitely increases my hatred for them.

KKKendra called for mass sterilization of Africans. Surely this takes the cake for the "most detestable comment uttered by a reality show contestant in the history of ever all-time ever ever."

Dammit Barry, you've just ruined the Bransen girls for me.

The Weavers were in fine form tonight Dan, wouldn't you say?

What's with the camera operators draining people's car batteries? That's twice now. They're lucky that nobody has been eliminated because of it (although the Linzes might be in danger of it).

The Weavers getting stripped of their money had virtually no impact on their race so far. WTF? I think the only time they needed money was to get into Yellowstone.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 07:04 (eighteen years ago) link

The Weavers are fantastic villains, a class that Jonathan sort of transcended since he actually seemed (and in all likelihood was) physically dangerous and realistically you wanted him gone from the race as soon as possible.

OTOH, the Weavers are more harmless in a realistic way, but as far as TAR is concerned, you want, in a banal way, the fat one and her sister to be thrown off their horses, yet when they avoid elimination, you're grateful that they're still in the race so you can tensely keep on rooting against them. Also, they've gotten farther than Jonathan, though that only makes them more successful in a retrospective way.

I also forgot to mention from the previous episode: "Miss Latin Utah -- even better!"

Keep the juices flowing by jangling around gentleee as you move (Leee), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 07:16 (eighteen years ago) link

Weavers: we don't know anything about ice ... except ice skating!

Uh, you're headed for an *indoor* rink, you fools.

I also liked how the driver basically told them to get lost when they asked him to go fast. Montreal cab drivers are insane, you don't normally have to ask them to take you on a near-death experience through downtown Montreal.

The geography puzzle at the end was an awesome finish. They (=AR) did one thing right this season.

What was with the "charter plane to a shhhhhhhh SECRET location"? I was hoping they'd fly to Baffin island ... Labrador ... somewhere a little bit out of the way ... Toronto? Were they supposed to unsure whether they were still in Canada? I don't get it.

The Bransens lost when they chose to go the Shoe Museum. I don't think the task itself took any longer than the boat thing, but they had to drive north through the downtown core (this would have been 8-9 AM, during the peak of rush hour unless this happened on a weekend) and then back the way they came to get on the highway to drive to Queenston. Since the Linzes remained close to the lake (and the highway), they saved themselves about half an hour worth of driving over the Bransens. If I had known about this and been around at the time (the Bransens parked on U of T campus about two blocks from my office when they went to the Shoe Museum), maybe I could have altered the final standings ... or organized that foursome :)

We could have had so much fun with this season!!! why didn't anyone watch? I really do think that that lame-o family season took the wind out of the show's sails. but this one had it all. okay, no major blowouts, but still, highly entertaining. good villains (those frat boys! yuck!), good goofballs (loveable hippies! who would have guessed?), good afro-american and oldie teams. good bimbos. that one blonde babe's "I Love Spinning" t-shirt alone would have given us material for weeks! oh well, maybe next time. meanwhile, i can't even watch the finale cuz i have to work :(

this season also had one of the first three team foot races to a pitstop that i have seen in years.

don't even get me started on survivor. which was also really good this season. i know i'm probably the only person on ilx who still watches that creaky old thing. even maria doesn't watch it anymore and she was the rabid fan in the family! that finale i actually get to see tonight cuz i'm not working.

This season has been great and kind of underscores how Uchenna and Joyce are the awesomest people to have ever been on the show.

Also megaLOLZ at Romber's hubris! I like them as a racing team but still, LOLZ.

HI DERE, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 16:24 (seventeen years ago) link

Scott, we can rebuild this thing.

I kinda dis/agree with you about the concept of an All-Stars TAR, especially since none of my favorite teams (Chip & Kim, the Clowns, the Hippies, Colin + Christie (my ironic faves)) were invited onto the show, and the only team that I was familiar with and liked are the Beauty Queens and they were getting their luscious tails handed to them because now they had some real competition, and yes, Romber part IV was redundant yet in a way necessary, but it's really IMO kicked up a notch lately with the surprise rise of thee SCHMIRNA JUGGERNAUT, and I am now feeling the love for the Cha Chas too.

Are the Guidos supposed to be bad guys?

33rd season premiere was last night. A wrinkle is that they made it three episodes before covid cancelled things in 2020, so I guess when they got the all-clear they just picked up where they left off. The season premiere is therefore all pre-covid, but I think after the next episode it's ... well, not post-covid, but some months later. Curious how that plays out. Like, what if a couple broke up in between?

Speaking of couples, the teams this season lean kind of hard on novelties - a lot of youtube/reality people - but there are some compelling pairings. For example, two best friends, one of whom was wrongfully imprisoned for a decade. Or the guys that stopped that terrorist on a train in France. And some other folks, too.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 7 January 2022 02:58 (two years ago) link

OK, this is kind of interesting, in a time capsule sort of way. At the end of the second episode there is a *19 month* leap forward. Some teams do not return to resume the race (with no explanation), some previously eliminated teams get to come back, some people have lost their jobs, some have had family members die of covid, travel going forward is on chartered flights but otherwise generally avoiding public transportation in favor of driving, people are wearing masks, we suspect challenges were re-considered with social distancing in mind ... kind of surreal.
