Coney Island

I'm really feeling Coney Island lately. What are your favorite and not so favorite parts? Suggestions for good bars or restaurants? Ditto for Brighton Beach. Also, any reccommendations for good places to eat/things to do in Bay Ridge?

So far I like: hot dogs, lemonade, and fried clams with chips at Nathan's, Lola Starr, an incredibly savvy mermaid-centric boutique–gift store on the boardwalk, and Astroland park.

I don't like: the gated community (Seagate?) which hides the Coney Island lighthouse from public view, and the swinging cars of the ferris wheel, scary.

Keyspan baseball park seems nice; it would be fun to watch a baseball game while overlooking the ocean, but too bad about Steeplechase park.

Anyway, make suggestions (please).

Mary (Mary), Monday, 16 June 2003 17:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the haunted roller coaster where Scooby and his pals caught the ghost!

hipster. :-)

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 16 June 2003 18:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I liked: Skee ball and cheap jewelry purchased with the proceeds thereof,
Cyclone batting cage (watching the 100 m.p.h. cage),
Graffiti

I didn't like: pink popcorn

It was all very Warriors. (My favorite Warriors gang is the Orphans, not the Baseball Furies, as you might think.)

felicity (felicity), Monday, 16 June 2003 18:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, and I suggest going to the Siren Festival, naturally.

THE JERSEY SHORE ROXOR ALL U CONEY ISLAND LUVRS R GAY!

Tad (llamasfur), Monday, 16 June 2003 18:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I totally agree. I'm all about Wildwood.

Hey, I haven't been to Coney Island in ages (and I grew up 'round those parts). Is the carousel still operational?

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 16 June 2003 18:23 (twenty-two years ago)

So out here in the midwest we used to eat Coney Island hot dogs- a hot dog with a chili type of topping. That's all i know about Coney island.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Monday, 16 June 2003 18:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Tad & Jody: the Jersey shore is my next thread.

Another disappointment: Luna Park, which is actually a car park.

TS: Luna Park vs Linkin Park

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 16 June 2003 19:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I used to live in a town called Lincoln Park.

The Jersey Shore suxors, Wildwood is totally boring. We should all go to Six Flags.

Once again, the coven of Ally rules! Six Flags has the fastest (and most death-defying) rollercoasters; the food doesn't choke you and at the end of the day, you only feel slightly ripped off.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Monday, 16 June 2003 20:09 (twenty-two years ago)

My roommie was taking his Bed-Stuy 8th graders to Six Flags today. He was so excited last night he couldn't fall asleep.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 16 June 2003 20:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I had the best afternoon of my life at last year's Siren Festival. It was the day of the power outage, so it took a few hours to get down to Coney Island, but it was so worth it. Cyclone = Classic. They turned the Hiphop Avalanche/Himalaya thing into a Hipster Avalanche/Himalaya and were playing Sleater-Kinney and Andrew WK. Way fun. And the best part was going to that bar and seeing L*rry Tee DJ'ing to nobody-at-all. Didn't see any bands though. Heard a bit of Mooney Suzuki, I think.

The buildings aren't leany; they're just angled weirdly.

I know exactly where you lived, JBR! I lived not too far from there for two years. I really miss it (not the commute tho).

We should go to Rasputin, this Russian mob club down there. Scary place. Saw Billy Corgan outside there once, strangely.

Is Ruby's a good bar?

The mermaid parade is this Sat.

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 17:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Mermain parade is this week??? I had no idea it was so soon. Ruby's is a great bar. Lots of fun.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 17:59 (twenty-two years ago)

It's this Sat. Yanc3y, since you lived in C.I. for 2 yrs you are required to divulge all of its secrets to me.

if you like saggy tits it's the place to be! i guess i'll head down. it's not really all that great -- get drunk or get high first and you'll have fun tho. some friends of mine made a float last year that won a prize! i was sposed to be on it, but i showed up late (see my "get drunk or get high first" bit).

Some good info here:

http://www.coneyislandusa.com/

Just a reminder: If you're planning on heading out there, the F isn't making the trip at the moment, only the W goes to Stilwell Avenue. (Or you can get a shuttle from the last F stop -- Ave X.)

Siren is July 19. There's a band list next door.

kephm, Wednesday, 18 June 2003 21:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I was down in Coney/Brighton today. Broke into my old building (well really I just followed someone into the side entrance and no questions were asked), moseyed around Ocean Parkway and BBA and Neptune Ave and and Surf Ave. Ate at Nathan's, played skeeball on the boardwalk, walked along the sand... twas nice. Bummer that they've totally demolished the beautiful old facade of the Stilwell Ave station. If they restore it I hope they do it soon.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 21:27 (twenty-two years ago)

cash in any skeeball tickets?

kephm, Wednesday, 18 June 2003 22:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Nah, I didn't get that many. I only spent 75 cents (for three games).

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 22:16 (twenty-two years ago)

down the way from me (salem, ma.) they still have a genie machine that tells you your fortune. and a scarey monkey 3 piece band machine, where you put in a penny and these three raggedy monkeys clap their cymbals and strum guitar. the monkeys are not doing so well. falling apart. also, they have this odd, um-booth that you stand in and- i think you crank a wheel, and it plays old felix the cat reels
good stuff. i will be sad when it is gone

kephm, Wednesday, 18 June 2003 22:38 (twenty-two years ago)

IN addition to the W train, MTA is running 2 "Beach Buses" from non-W stops to Coney Island. One Beach Bus is from "Avenue X," the last stop on the F line, to the Boardwalk. The other one I really couldn't pay attention to because my mind was overwhelmed with how cool it would be to live on Avenue X with my housemates Storm and Wolverine.

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 19 June 2003 13:25 (twenty-two years ago)

It's all fun and games until you actually move to Avenue X and realize the only way to get in and out is to take the F for four hours.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 19 June 2003 13:28 (twenty-two years ago)

If I lived on Avenue X why would I ever leave? This was the lesson of "The Warriors."

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 19 June 2003 13:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Unless you're a carny, you probably need to go somewhere else for work!

(note: I'm pretty sure there's no jobs for carnies there either, but I wanted to use the word "carny")

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 19 June 2003 13:32 (twenty-two years ago)

It's all fun and games until you actually move to Avenue X and realize the only way to get in and out is to take the F for four hours.

Those poor, poor Brooklynites. What are they thinking?! Everyone should move to the Upper West Side obv.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 19 June 2003 13:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Living in the Real World: Avenue X my job would be lady pilot so my commute would be to JFK or LaGuardia. It better not take me 4 hours. Time is money.

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 19 June 2003 13:48 (twenty-two years ago)

jbr in being condescending for no apparent reason towards a joke I've made shockah! Can felicity and I go back to our conversation about mutants and carnies now? Or do you want to call me a cunt again? Either way, it's cool!

felicity, how do you get a job as a lady pilot? Can you wear a "naughty" pilot uniform to do that? What would Wolverine's role in this be?

I think I'd rather live on Avenue X than in Linkin Park, I should've moved there prior to my current apt. I mean, your address would be something like 437 Avenue X!!!

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 19 June 2003 13:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Four hours = more like 45 minutes. For years my grandma commuted to midtown from her place at East 4th and Avenue X and she did just fine.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 19 June 2003 13:56 (twenty-two years ago)

but when do we get to go to cincinnatti?

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 19 June 2003 13:56 (twenty-two years ago)

There are a number of ways to break in, but I got my Associate's degree in Lady Piloting from Dr. Xavier Nadler's Flight Academy for wayward X-girls. I think it helps to wear a pussycat blouse to the interview. Good luck.

Wolverine's role is very limited until they set the airport metal detectors not to go Danger! Danger! Adamantium! every time he comes to visit.

We are starting nonstop flights from Cincinnati in the fall but it's only one-way.

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 19 June 2003 14:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I lived on Ave X so all yall can suck my schnozzle!

And for me to get to work at 50th St. it took anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour and fifteen minutes.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 5 July 2003 13:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Kinda funny that they brought TMBG in as Official Coney Island Experts. TMBG: "Is the Cyclone still here?" Show Host: "Uh, you're standing in front of it."

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 5 July 2003 14:03 (twenty-two years ago)

the show is always like that. at least This American Life and such get somewhere.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Saturday, 5 July 2003 14:11 (twenty-two years ago)

That bar we ended up at was amazing.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 6 July 2003 20:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I think you were at Ruby's. Sigh. And big ups to that Japanese kid for winning the hot dog contest again.

I'll kick his ass as soon as I can figure out how to enter

Millar (Millar), Monday, 7 July 2003 22:39 (twenty-two years ago)

It was Ruby's, Mary. We were on the beach, running under the sprinklers like water-deprived Struthers kids, and we all took a collective sigh and said "Well that was fun. What now?" Me: "TO THE BAR!!" The others: "I love you, JBR." And we marched onward towards the best little watering hole in Coney Island.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 7 July 2003 23:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I just realized that I have a whole book about Coney Island in the 20s

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 23 July 2003 02:30 (twenty-two years ago)

More pictures! I am going to Coney Island this weekend when Franz visits. I need to get a bathing suit but I would rather dress like the kid in the lower right hand corner in the suit and tie and hat. We really wants to ride the Cyclone but Ally and Phil's brutal trip has put me off. Although, Byron remained unscathed.

Carey (Carey), Thursday, 31 July 2003 13:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the real key is just that me and Phil are apparently complete spazzes. Also I contorted my body into a weird position to hide the fact that my breasts had become partially bare by the whipping rollercoaster brutality shockah.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 31 July 2003 13:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh my god, there should totally be a tube top only Cyclone riding day. Men, women and children.

Carey (Carey), Thursday, 31 July 2003 13:14 (twenty-two years ago)

All will come out bloodied and battered, just like World War II.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 31 July 2003 13:16 (twenty-two years ago)

The Cyclone took some skin off my knuckles. (I am not as brave as phil to do the no hands thing.) And now my forehead is peeling from Sandy Hook.

The beach, she is such a cruel mistress.

bnw (bnw), Thursday, 31 July 2003 14:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha I have virtually no peeling despite my demon burn! Bow before me, the magical skinned mistress!

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 31 July 2003 14:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I must eat here very soon.

(I have given up on Garguilos.)

If I don't go to Baltimore perhaps I shall go to the NY Aquarium this weekend.

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 31 July 2003 16:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I must eat at Totonno's too.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 31 July 2003 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Mmmmm... I want to eat at these places too, but it'll end up being another meal where I make Franz buy me non vegan things while I watch him eat a small salad with no cheese. Which is actually quite fun on occasion. This reminds me to bring a non sandal, non shorts, non jeans, non t-shirt wardrobe if I want to eat at Garguilos.

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I knew you'd like that :)

that umbrella kept flying around the beach all over and its owners refused to come get it half the time. It almost smacked bnw in the head if I recall. Then we found a bus covered in Radiohead which was so weird. The "pop band" sign is the entrance to the Cyclone--I don't know what it meant entirely but it was pretty good.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 00:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh and then we have the freakshow which I don't want to ever go in but it's funny from outside. The subway station is cool cos it says "Avenue X" on it which I reckon is a good place to live. Then we have my nemesis the Cyclone and the ferris wheel in the distance. The beach shot, somewhere in there is bnw and Mary.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 00:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Then we found a bus covered in Radiohead which was so weird.

I like this image.

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 00:09 (twenty-two years ago)

This is a public service announcement. C.I. (sadly) is over. Don't fret, though. Now it's all about BRIGHTON BEACH. (By the way, I walked from Avenue X to Coney Island, I see now why that woman advised against it. It wasn't the most salubrious walk, under the disused elevated train tracks the whole way...)

So BRIGHTON: either walk west on the boardwalk, or even better, take a train directly there and skip C.I. entirely. High rises give way to lovely pre-war apartment buildings, similar to the area around the Cloisters. On the boardwalk there are no less than four dining establishments, outdoor cafe style for a Moscow on the Seine feel: Cafe Tatiana, Cafe Volna... White table cloths, silverwear, strange Russian food, vodka....On the other side of a burned out building there is the dark Bar Moscow which looked handsomely seedy.

However, I hear all the action is on Brighton Beach Avenue. I didn't get to explore over there yet though. One blight: there is a monstrosity development project on the sight of the orginal Brighton Baths -- and monstrosity it is, looks like the sand-pink colored condominums lining Springfield Mall in VA.. These are aptly named "Brighton-on-the-Sea."

So, BRIGHTON. Make suggestions.

Allyzay Subservient 50s-Type (allyzay), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 18:35 (twenty years ago)

That is abysmal. by all means redevelop, but please do it in a way that makes the best of what has kept the area going during the low years. This must be the good stuff if it's kept going through the lean times.

Coney Island FAP?

Ian John50n (orion), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 18:45 (twenty years ago)

Mermaid Parade is June 25.

I confess I went on the Cyclone just once (circa '99, my ONLY lifetime 'coaster experience) and am bewildered how anyone could find it pleasurable... My friend, age 55 at the time, said "This was a lot more fun 30 years ago." I had mild whiplash for a week.

I was last on the Wonder Wheel in 1970, with my dad (who had acrophobia).

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 18:56 (twenty years ago)

The Cyclone was the most horrifying experience of, like, the last 5 years of my life, to be blunt about it. Ugh. I was bruised everywhere, had whiplash, strained arms because I had to cling so hard to the belt thing (too far away from my body to really serve its purpose) and...and...my boobs fell out of my bathing suit while riding it!!!! Arrgh. No no, it is better to sit on the beach and then go to Nathans, than to get on the Cyclone.

But it should not go away!

Allyzay Subservient 50s-Type (allyzay), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 19:05 (twenty years ago)

FUCK THIS COUNTRY. FUCK AMERICA RIGHT IN THE ASS. THIS SHIT IS A WAR CRIME. I WILL FUCKING MURDER PEOPLE.

Allyzay Subservient 50s-Type (allyzay), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 20:20 (twenty years ago)

the bellefox, Thursday, 21 April 2005 10:23 (twenty years ago)

Some minor notes:

-Where Nathan's is now is not the original location. They'd probably just move somewhere else in Coney.

-While the Go-Karts are nice, the indoor water park coming with the mall is probably gonna do a lot more for the place overall, especially in winter time.

-The Cyclone does, has, and always will rule.

my (edinburgh-based) friend's first band were called coney island cyclone. it was 1995. he'd never been; he just liked the name. i spent hours designing a tape cover in pagemaker 5, with a picture of the cyclone, for his demo.

when i went to NY in february 1997, i rode out to coney island just for his sake. it was fucking awesome. the whistle of the wind under the boardwalk will live with me for ever. russian dudes selling televisions in little stalls by the side of the road. an abandoned army recruiting stall. a place selling donuts. the cyclone was shut. the wind whistled under my soul. i didn't want to leave.

my friend played bass for a while with arab strap, and now has a band called sans trauma. you should look them up on myspace. linking would seem too gratuitous, so it's up to you.
