Of course, Melbourne is k-rox0r, say I. More class, friendlier people, better weather (and yes, because it is cooler and damper), nice parks... TRAMS! Better live band scene, better pubs, shopping, restaurants, etc...
Thats just my 2cents tho.

Sydney's better for everything but haircuts. In Melbourne, everyone's a hairdresser, even if they don't realise it yet. Especially their artists. And why are Melbournites always on ILE? Because in Sydney everyone's outside, enjoying the sun and the beach.
Oh yes, but Melbourne is also better in another respect - everyone there has sex with everyone, because it's so small. And that sounds like fun.

Melbournites, you're not supposed to just say 'Melbourne' and nothing else. That's no fun. You're supposed to give stingingly witty reasons that cut Sydneysiders to the quick, like Chris did.

Sticking that bloody ugly bloated 'Starship Enterprise' (officially known as the Sydney Sports Stadium) right in the spot where it hides the Centrepoint Tower view of the much more historic and interesting SCG.
Fortunately the harbor and the other Sydney landmarks were already in place well before the current generation of cowboys first placed one square block atop another in their playpens, or God knows how they'd have stuffed it up.

In other words H, Sydney is more full of itself and more susceptible to its own self-promotion, and, by extension, any outsider who questions Sydney's self-image is making themself vulnerable in the same way as the smart-arse kid who climbed the lamp-post and heckled the Emperor in the story of the New Clothes?
― Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Monday, 27 October 2003 11:26 (twenty-two years ago)
There's both a smugness and a feeling of insecurity about Sydney and Sydneysiders. On the one hand a lot of people are beating their chest about Sydney's undeniable attractions, on the other hand they're worried that it's not really in the same league as London, New York and Paris (and they're right, it isn't, it's more in the same league as Seattle or Barcelona). On the other hand, people in Melbourne aren't worried about how the city compares to London, New York, etc., they're worried about how it compares to Sydney... Back in the 50s or 60s things were probably pretty equitable between Syd. and Melb. Since then, Sydney has pulled away from Melbourne to clearly become Australia's biggest and most important city, commercially, politically, in terms of attracting immigrants, etc., etc. If that big city atmosphere is what you want (and sure, it's not everyone's cup of tea), then Sydney's the only city in Australia that can give it to you.
― H., Monday, 27 October 2003 11:48 (twenty-two years ago)
I work in Melbourne for a company based in Sydney, and it sends down head office people who absolutely ooze smugness and superiority and that whole Paul Keating Sydney entitlement vibe (as in 'if you're not from Sydney you're not from anywhere that matters'). We are 'meant' to view Sydney as some kind of Mecca, and mention it only in the kind of hushed tones the flunkies on Are You Being Served would whisper 'The Board Room'
To a man we all find this whole preening peacock show a giant yawn. We literally couldn't give a flying rat's tossbag.
For those 271 (last census) Melbournites that really do wish they were in Sydney, there's always Chapel St Prahran, Melbourne's very own Sidneyland theme park.
― Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Monday, 27 October 2003 12:03 (twenty-two years ago)
Actually, I like Melbourne, and there are many things about Sydney that piss me off. (The irony is that I'm from Sydney myself but I moved away!) Yes, I recognise that the preening "aren't we great" thing is pretty irritating, even for me. And there's a shallowness to Sydney, every time you go out to dinner with people they have to talk about property prices, there's a cultural problem in Sydney, the NSW Art Gallery being it's only really good exhibition space, the theatre scene is dire, etc., etc. However, I think the cultural scene is gradually improving as Sydney gathers steam as the only Australian city with an international profile. For me, where Sydney scores the most points is that international feel, and also the physical beauty of the place that Melbourne can't really compete with. I'll fully admit that Melbourne (for the moment) has more culturally going on and is a bit more user-friendly in general.

― the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 27 October 2003 12:19 (twenty-two years ago)
The way Sydney promotes itself is, I agree, a big problem, and if I hadn't already been there and formed my own views it would be enough to put me off the idea of setting foot in the place. Similarly I 'know' in complete ignorance, that I'd hate New York, because the things that it seems you are meant to like about it, which they actually promote, repel rather than attract me.
It's like a film putting absolutely the wrong bits in the tralier, and then blaming me for not wanting to see it. And yes, the 'blaming' aspect does get very tiresome.

There are only two great cities in this land of ours.
Melbourne is home to all that is beautiful and intelligent. Its village-like suburbs are filled with gingerbread houses and candyfloss trees. The city itself is a marvel of low-rise jade cathedrals surrounding a crystal fountain that the ruling magikal lords have deigned should flow free with silver coins for any of the denizens to dip their cups into. And the people! High cheekboned and sensual, Melbournites are closer in spirit to the people of faerie than any other in the land. Such names they have! Electric Sound, Trayce, Lord Andrew and, er, Fred. Their laughter is like the tinkling of silver bells, delighting the ear as one strolls past the art houses and wine-serving coffeshops they love to meet at.
Sydney, on the other hand, is a turmoil of lust, greed, decadence and decay. The streets - either massive, choked, ironically named Freeways, or dark, narrow, dangerous alleys – are overrun with huge rats, mutating packs of vicious dogs, and sleek limousines in which property developers glide, looking for junkie hookers to murder. The buildings tower overhead, in a retards imitation of New York, their broken windows revealing a population of zombie-workers.The people, best characterised by the two-headed monstrosity colgaz, are fearsome throwbacks only interested in their own tawdry satisfaction. Badly educated and brain damaged colgaz lurks on the very edges of what might be called the inhabitable, dragging soiled goods from the slimy, scuttling, vermin infested garbage dumbs to furnish their maggot-ridden asbestos dwellings.
Sydney has better bands though.

No.27 BILLY BONES – Mandy Kane. Dandenong local Mandy Kane scored a top 20 single with his debut Stab, which stayed in the top 40 for the next three weeks. Billy Bones is the follow up single from the sexually ambiguous rocker and has performed strongly in its first week of release. Kane’s debut album is titled Tragic Daydream and will be released in the new year

KILL THE INFECTED [25-Oct-2003]
I finally saw the movie "28 Days later..." tonight. It was quite good, and featured some really atmospheric sequences. However, a group of primates sitting behind us insisted on talking throughout the entire film. I felt compelled to slaughter these useless plebs as if they were 'infected' like the zombies on screen. If it were up to me, all people who disregard common courtesy would be put on an island as far away from me as possible, where they could talk as much as they wanted in the cinema.
To me it is evident that society needs division. We were not created to exist on one level. If we were all the same, there would be no order and chaos would prevail. Zombies are driven entirely by instinct, which inevitably results in anarchy. 'Regular' people are driven by lust, greed and a host of other deadly sins. This results in division and hierarchy, because only the strongest and smartest survive. In turn, a society is born which creates and sustains a civilisation through progress and technology.
So, which is worse - a world full of zombies, or people like us?
-MK.

CHROME MOONSHINE [13-Jun-2003]
What is it with full moons? The band and I played a show at a tiny club in the city last night, and I swear, everyone was going berserk. Rie, my lovely bass player, arrived in the alley-way to load in her gear and was confronted by the startling sight of a homeless guy with no pants on, slumped against the wall. He was apparently taking a dump.
So, then I get a call from Nick, my drummer, asking where I was.
"There's a gang at the end of the alley chroming...." he said.
"Be there in 5 seconds... I'm just around the corner."
As I passed the local convenience store, I saw this guy sitting on top of someone, pinning them to the ground. At first, I thought they were just messing around, but then he started pummelling the other person. Within seconds, a fleet of cop cars pulled up.
When I arrived, the chromers were eyeing us suspiciously, but I didn't think they meant any harm. It's sad to see how people can fuck up their lives so easily.
Anyway, we managed to strategically load in all our gear down 2 flights of stairs, and played a great show. But it wasn't over yet...
I left with Nick to get both of our cars while Matty-Ray and Rie stayed to watch the gear. As we were approaching the alley, I heard a screech of tyres, followed by a massive crash. Some guy had rammed his slick car up the rear end of a cab. A cop car was conveniently waiting nearby, and pulled up immediately. I laughed to myself as I passed. What a dickhead.
On the way home, sirens were blazing, lights were flashing and choppers were circling. A number of police cars with searchlights circled one oval I passed - obviously hunting someone down. There was an uneasy tension in the air, but it was strangely exhilarating.
It kind of reminded me of New York. At the time, it's sort of scary to be in those situations. But it's like a roller coaster. Once you get off, you just wanna go again!!! In a way, that's how I see my music.

worse than anthrax.
But I realised that what mandy brought to this nasty town was a sense of theatre- you know this guy is a showman- and there just aint much of that around these days cos were all too busy trying to make bucks up here to take the time with hair, makeup and organising the kind of backing band that looked like it fell through a worm hole in 1986 Los aAngeles shortly after stepping off stage with Pat Benatar.
Now thats what melbourne has lots of that sydney doesnt- theatre sports. Theatre sports is just so zany isnt it?
you got mandy and theatre sports- I can see why you pity us.

Hi AustraliLX, I need your help.
RockWiz is on SBS tomorrow night at 9.20pm, and I'm a contestant.
Does anyone have any means of digitally recording stuff off the telly - DVD recorder, HD recorder, PC, Mac etc - and if so could I get a copy somehow, somewhere? I'd 'tape' it on 'VHS' but the signal's noisy in my apartment, and I always have trouble emailing cassettes to the folks back home.
Thanks in advance for anyone who can help! (huey at arclife.co.uk)

I love this show, break a leg!
― badg, Friday, 16 November 2007 03:56 (eighteen years ago)
I think I already did. I recorded it a few weeks ago - aced the audition, finally finding a use all that pointless music trivia soaking up my brain, but then the show itself turned out to be a New Zealand music special... I won't tell you just how many of those Kiwi questions I got right, but it's a fairly 'round' number, if you catch my drift. Enjoy!

Perhaps if you'd watched this you'd know more about the history of New Zealand music and street fashion. Not really related to the question at hand but I've been itching for a chance to post it somewhere. Oh yeah and I'll vote for Melbourne because no-one calls it Gods Country.

Huey, someone else I know was just on it (and won!), and he said they don't even give you a beer, let alone a free beer, so fuck 'em, the cunts, and make sure you stash a couple in your pockets.
― S-, Friday, 16 November 2007 05:15 (eighteen years ago)
No free beer no, and sadly no make-up either. But one of the assistants gave me a fag in the car park, and there was half a bottle of warm water under the desk, so I musn't grumble.
