Allah, why are you punishing Chicago?

Is it because the music scene is supposedly "hot" here now? I see no other reason for this shitty-ass weather and nonsummer to be inflicted on a city this far from the corridors of power. BITE ME!!! BITE ME, STUPID RAIN!!!! This totally goes against the logic of revenge. Or... does it? The Native Americans weren't in it with whatever gods gave Europe the second-pooawfullest climate in the world, not to mention the plague, were they? You didn't make your belt-buckle-brandishing father's boss such an asshole, did you? And surely it's not by order of Man that Fran Drescher has to harpoon herself with tampons every month. You tell me, I'm busy stomping on my umbrella. JESUS! (ho. ho.)

Ann Sterzinger (Ann Sterzinger), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 14:35 (twenty-two years ago)

And surely it's not by order of Man that Fran Drescher has to harpoon herself with tampons every month.

Thou Shalt Not Take the Nanny's Name in Vain.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Hands up everyone who thought this said, "Ally, [...]"!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 14:41 (twenty-two years ago)

is the allstar game gonna be rained out?

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 14:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Score sports radio says no, but they also told me my ass wouldn't get soaked on the way to work.

Ann Sterzinger (Ann Sterzinger), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 14:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I'm often confused for Allah, Dan.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 14:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I was actually enjoying the thunderstorm last night.

amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I wanna go scuba diving someday. Is Lake Michigan pretty? I sometimes like to hold my breath until I see stars because I like to say the word 'phosphenes' over and over again.

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 14:52 (twenty-two years ago)

"I was actually enjoying the thunderstorm last night."

Sure, it's great pretending you're Mary Shelley coming up with Frankenstein's monster... till you have to go #(&($ outside.

Stupid gods.

(I realize I'm just digging the hole deeper, but when I stop digging, it keeps widening.)

Ann Sterzinger (Ann Sterzinger), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 15:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, just be thankful it isn't 100 degrees outside.

amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 15:15 (twenty-two years ago)

"...till you have to #(&($ outside."

You have an outhouse?

NA. (Nick A.), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 15:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, just be thankful it isn't 100 degrees outside.

Amateurist understands me on a soulful level. What I wouldn't give for a thunderstorm!

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 15:23 (twenty-two years ago)

You have sex in outhouses, Nick? Eeeeew.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 15:23 (twenty-two years ago)

outhouses are SO sexy! The stink is like S&M and stuff.

Sarah MClusky (coco), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Hands up everyone who thought this said, "Ally, [...]"!

Me too! I wasn't sure why she would be, though.

Lars (Nicole), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 15:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Thank god, I almost forgot: All-Star game = take detour on way home.

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 15:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Ann, don't forget: it could always be worse.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 15:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I am punishing Chicago cuz...well...cuz DITKA. Now lemme see dem sausages.

Allah_Farley (nickalicious), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 16:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Isn't the all star game at the old Rosemont Horizon or something?

amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 16:13 (twenty-two years ago)

"'...till you have to #(&($ outside.'

You have an outhouse?"

Not even -- I have to #($(# out my window. I told you my ass was soaked! Must... paddle back to... copyediting thread...

Ann Sterzinger (Ann Sterzinger), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 16:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Look, it's sunny now!

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 16:18 (twenty-two years ago)

What I wouldn't give for a thunderstorm!

Ooh! I'm getting my wish! The hurrican will bring "heavy rains" over the next coupla days. Sadly, though, the highs will still be in the upper 80's through the whole thing. Why can't we get arctic storms once in a while, instead of the damn tropical ones?

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

"Ann, don't forget: it could always be worse. "

Yeah, sure, and it could make more sense, too -- DUH, what do they pump in Texas?

Wait a minute...

Cripes, Allah really IS confused.

Ann Sterzinger (Ann Sterzinger), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 16:21 (twenty-two years ago)

What do they put in the coffee down on Illinois?

amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 16:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Ann, how 'bout you go write one of your trademark sassy restaurant reviews? That'll cheer you up.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 16:23 (twenty-two years ago)

i have a punny photoshop opportunity for those so inclined:

adm. ally akbar

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 16:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I HATE YOU.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 16:29 (twenty-two years ago)

"Ann, how 'bout you go write one of your trademark sassy restaurant reviews? That'll
cheer you up."

Funny you should say that, since Bartleby just lost MS Word and possibly the restaurant box I was working on.

What's that in my coffee? Oh! It's bile!

Ann Sterzinger (Ann Sterzinger), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 16:30 (twenty-two years ago)

"Ooh! I'm getting my wish! The hurrican will bring "heavy rains" over the next coupla
days. Sadly, though, the highs will still be in the upper 80's through the whole thing.
Why can't we get arctic storms once in a while, instead of the damn tropical ones?"

You are a madman. I'm never really happy till it's 90 degrees outside.

Ann Sterzinger (Ann Sterzinger), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 16:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Heh. And I am not happy until it's below 40. We should switch places.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 16:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Where do you live, and what else is good about the place?

Ann Sterzinger (Ann Sterzinger), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 17:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I live in Austin. WHat's good about it? Well... a lot, really. But I'm moving to Chicago in 6 weeks, so I'd rather not think too much about why Austin is good. Just make me sad.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 17:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I can only hope that Allah hates you even more than he hates me, and that he will express his opinion by cancelling winter.

Ann Sterzinger (Ann Sterzinger), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 17:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm never really happy until it's 130 degrees and I'm floating in a bowl of egg drop soup with my buddy DAVID VAN BERKEL. David! Where are you? Nine years is LONG ENOUGH. I'm ok now!

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Are you insane woman? This summer has been the best weather-wise that I can remember. I'm sitting here w/the breeze coming through the window and the sun shining in...I can even ignore those FUCKING KIDS WHO HONK THEIR GODDAMN SCOOTER HORNS EVERY 5 SECONDS

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 18:19 (twenty-two years ago)

See, now Oops is obviously in it with the friggin Eskimos...

Scooters??? What nabe you live in? Loyola????

Ann Sterzinger (Ann Sterzinger), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 18:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Where do you live, Anne? Cause I'm looking for apartments right now, and I'm focusing on Uptown / Ravenswood (although I'm still a little unclear on where "uptown" beings and ends, but, you know, north of Irving park), and I can use all the insights I can get.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 18:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Kenan didn't we deal with "Uptown" on another thread?

Also: Do you have a car?

amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 18:47 (twenty-two years ago)

No car. I remember the Uptown discussion on another thread, but got nothing solid out of it.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 18:49 (twenty-two years ago)

My sister lived in Ravenswood (near Lawrence and Damen) and got by fine w/o a car, although she did love it when she got to borrow mine of course.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 18:51 (twenty-two years ago)

We do have a car, but we're thinking very seriously of selling it. If we can.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 18:52 (twenty-two years ago)

You probably won't want to do that. It's possible not to have a car in Chicago, but it's really nice if one's available.

amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 18:53 (twenty-two years ago)

But don't you usually have to pay for a parking spot?

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 18:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Huh? No. Where I live there's tons of street parking.

amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 18:56 (twenty-two years ago)

only with blood
(x post)

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 18:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh. And where is that? (Not trying to stalk anybody, understand.)

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 18:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't even know how to drive and I'm happy in north Uptown -- the public transit is the best I think imaginable in the City of Stupid Drivers, Sociopaths in SUVs, and Broken Trains. (Having a car almost sounds worse than not having one!!!)It's close to the lake too, lots of nice places to walk and listen to headphones. However, since we AN's have provided the thin wedge of gentrification, rents are shooting up, so get in fast with a landlord who likes you.

Ann Sterzinger (Ann Sterzinger), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 18:57 (twenty-two years ago)

"North Uptown"? Like Argyle?

The area between the lake Clark between Montrose and Foster can be kind of icky. I wouldn't look there. Also parking is really difficult in that neighborhood. Farther west, like west of Ashland, parking generally gets really easy.

I'd recommend living off the Brown Line, if you plan to work downtown.

amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 19:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, just north of Argyle. It's becoming a really weird place.

Ann Sterzinger (Ann Sterzinger), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 19:05 (twenty-two years ago)

(Jessa's sister just got a place at Bryn Mawr and Sheridan, and she's really excited about it, and it's $700 for 500 sq feet, and she plans to live with her new boyfriend. I think this is a terrible idea. I know firsthand what 500 square feet can do to a new relationship.)

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 19:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah but that area's a little scummy, although the city is trying hard to improve its image (without acting making all that many material improvements).

amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 19:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, just north of Argyle

How much you wanna bet realtors are advertising this area as "East Andersonville"?

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 19:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't you mean "South Andersonville"? Or maybe "North North Lakeview"?

amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 19:18 (twenty-two years ago)

How much you wanna bet realtors are advertising this area as "East Andersonville"?

They are. No shit. Half of my confusion as to what neighborhood is what stems from the Reader's apartment ads.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 19:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Just don't think about the neighborhoods (which are fairly amorphous) and think about where the apartment actually is, like what intersection it's near.

amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 19:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Three locations I like: Sunnyside and Beacon, Foster and Wolcott, Lawrence and Kedzie

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 19:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Lawrence and Kedzie is a Middle Eastern and the edge of a Korean neighborhood. It's pretty un-hip around there but cheap. Sunnyside and Beacon is similar, although it's REALLY sleepy around there (just north of the cemetary). Foster and Wolcott...well that stretch of Foster (between Ravenswood and Damen) is really ugly but if you're a few blocks away from that intersection it'd be OK. That last address isn't very close to the El, but it's close to the Metra.

All of these neighborhoods are pretty much lower-middle-class neighborhoods that aren't in danger of gentrifying too much any time soon. But the drawback is that they're not very exciting and there aren't many "young people" (the accepted euphemism, see Theory of Achievement for details) around there.

amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 19:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Thank you. Useful info.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 19:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I would NEVER live with a sexual partner. Everyone I know who's tried it has wound up either living with an ex or breaking their lease.

Ann Sterzinger (Ann Sterzinger), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 20:02 (twenty-two years ago)

hi ann welcome to earth.

amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 20:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, I live with my girlfriend, but she's more than just a sexual partner by now. Her sister, on the other hand, is moving in with a man who does not speak English and has no discernable talents or prospects. She's out of her mind, that one.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 20:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Ok, so, where do the kids live? That I can afford? Like, in the dollar a square foot range?

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 20:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Sunnyside and Beacon: my friend lives at precisely this corner. It's pleasant, though I think all of the buildings around are going condo. If you come at it from the direction of the red line it seems a bit bleak, but in every other direction it's a great location.

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 20:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Andersonville proper (like between Ravenswood and Broadway, Foster and Bryn Mawr) is about $1200 for a 2-bed. Lots of kids live here. Also lesbians.

amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 20:10 (twenty-two years ago)

$1200 for a two-bedroom? That's no less than I pay in practically-Bucktown W.P.!

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 20:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, that's high. I'm thinking more like $750 for a 1-br.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 20:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, yeah, that's easy. I pay $685 for a 1-br. in Andersonville.

amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 20:14 (twenty-two years ago)

You don't want to live in Andersonville proper if you don't have a car. The Clark bus goes through Lincoln Park and the el is damned time consuming once you've hiked the six blocks, waited for the train, etc... actually, anyplace that's very far from the lake gets hard to commute from. And think of that walk when it's thirty below! See, this is why all us AN's are moving into Argyle (don't worry, I've come up with a more PG-13 term for 'art nigger' for my Tweet article) and ruining it.

Ann Sterzinger (Ann Sterzinger), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 20:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Well it all depends on where you work. But yes, hiking to the R.L. if you are west of Clark can be a bit of a bitch. Argyle area is OK, much better than Wilson at least.

amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 20:19 (twenty-two years ago)

And Argyle has lots of gay men and Asian women, so the fashion scene's swell. But the Dominicks on the corner is the worst on the planet. They don't even stock Archie comics now!

Ann Sterzinger (Ann Sterzinger), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 20:23 (twenty-two years ago)

all the far-north supermarkets suck. that's why i shop at the lebanese grocery.

amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 20:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Thirty below? Is there a place in Antarctica called "Chicago" that you live, and we're mistakenly thinking you live in Illinois?

Anyway... you guys really are being helpful today, moreso than anyone has been before.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 20:25 (twenty-two years ago)

you know you're reading ILX too much when you automatically read 'labanese' as 'lesbian'. I would SO shop at a lesbian grocery though.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 20:27 (twenty-two years ago)

labianese!

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 20:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Please, Allah, don't ever make me eat vegan lahum nee...

Ann Sterzinger (Ann Sterzinger), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 20:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, Oops, it practically is a lesbian grocery, in that neighborhood.

Suckas, I got you all beat: I'm paying $650 for a 2-br just north of Andersonville. (And by "just north" I mean "two blocks north of Bryn Mawr," not "Touhy.") That's thanks to my landlord, who was the bailiff on the Judge Mathis show, until he mysteriously died over x-mas.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 20:36 (twenty-two years ago)

My landlord, that is, not Judge Mathis.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 20:37 (twenty-two years ago)

whew! that was a close one

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 20:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, that makes me feel a little better. Rent is doable. Good. I'm still looking for an apartment in the dark, so to speak, as I will need to decide on it before I even get to the city. Always scary.

So what are bills like?

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 20:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Kenan, just so's you know, my rent is a total anomaly and fluke of luck. Like, nobody believes me when I tell them. But Amateurist's rent sounds about right.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 20:52 (twenty-two years ago)

fluke of luck, wtf?

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 20:52 (twenty-two years ago)

DO NOT rent an apartment if the heat's not included. Just don't do it. Water and electricity are fine. DON'T get a phone line, just get a cell.

Ann Sterzinger (Ann Sterzinger), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 21:15 (twenty-two years ago)

two weeks pass...
Ok, more info needed. I'm looking at a place right now that's at the 1300 block of Estes. Right next to the lake, right next to Loyola Park, right next to the train, it's big, it's pretty -- it's got a lot of plusses. But is it too far north? That's a full mile or two north of where I was thinking. Is there still city up there? Can I, like, walk places?

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 1 August 2003 03:49 (twenty-two years ago)

lots of folks would kill
for a place like that I think
screw walking places

Haikunym, Friday, 1 August 2003 04:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Half of me feels that way, but the other half of me needs to be able to go somewhere other than home without getting on a train or a bus. We're still planning to get rid of the car.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 1 August 2003 04:34 (twenty-two years ago)

have you gleaned nothing?
Chicago is wonderful
IF YOU KEEP THE CAR

Haikunym, Friday, 1 August 2003 04:51 (twenty-two years ago)

We're not keeping the fucking car.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 1 August 2003 04:57 (twenty-two years ago)

(sorry. I didn't mean to snap.)

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 1 August 2003 04:59 (twenty-two years ago)

then you better not
live on Estes, son, for real
go try Lincoln Park

or in Wrigleyville
where your rent goes thru the roof
see, there you can walk

Haikunym, Friday, 1 August 2003 05:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Kenan, that's not the greatest neighborhood. It's not terrible, but E. Rogers Park does have a notably higher rate of gang activity and violent crime than the rest of the N. Side. And the rents really aren't accordingly cheaper; I'd bet you could find as good a place in Edgewater or Ravenswood for just a bit more money, or even for the same amount.

I know it sounds hopelessly prissy, but I'd feel safer at night in a different neighborhood. I looked at some places right around there (Pratt east of Sheridan) and decided against it. Also there are some sketchy landlords up there. I mean, there are sketchy landlords everywhere, but many of the apt buildings up there, while grand on the outside, aren't kept up as well as you'd expect on the inside. In my experience. However the apts tend to be a bit bigger in that neighborhood than elsewhere, for whatever reasons.

The neighborhood's OK, aside from the crime issue. It's a hop skip and a jump to the Loyal train stop so the city's pretty accessible. There are a few so-so coffee shops up there, a nice if small used bookstore, a really crappy movie theater, and not much else--aside from the lake of course, which is a plus. (Loyola campus, right on the Lake, is nice to walk around--but the beaches are better a bit farther south.)

amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 1 August 2003 05:06 (twenty-two years ago)

the LOYOLA train stop. on the Red Line.

amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 1 August 2003 05:07 (twenty-two years ago)

is it rude to interrupt someone when they're talking to themselves?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 1 August 2003 05:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Pardon?

amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 1 August 2003 05:10 (twenty-two years ago)

you were the interrupter

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 1 August 2003 05:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Thank you, amateurist. I thought it sounded not so hot. I mean, these apartment locators know I'm at their mercy, so of course the first things they throw at me are going to be the most difficult places to rent otherwise.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 1 August 2003 06:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I believe I will insist on Ravenswood / Edgewater / Andersonville. Although the places in Andersonville are alarmingly small in my price range. That's gentrification for ya.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 1 August 2003 06:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I always liked that area. Not too trendy, not too dangerous, good mix of people. Just a regular ol' city neighborhood.

oops (Oops), Friday, 1 August 2003 07:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Which area do you mean?

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 1 August 2003 07:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Ravenswood-ish

oops (Oops), Friday, 1 August 2003 09:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I forgot how far north Estes is. I used to live on North Shore. Amateurist is right about the landlords, though. The area around the Heartland Cafe is pretty nice. The one nice thing about Rogers Park is that the apartments are HUGE.

Ravenswood / Andersonville is quite nice and still a good bargain. So is the east part of Edgewater, which is beautiful - lots of terra cotta and it's densely populated, which is something I like. Near the beach, too!

My sister used to live on Rockwell in Ravenswood - that's a really cute area with a mix of affordable apartments alongside middle-class housing. I love the area around the Rockwell 'L' stop. It's very quiet there, so it depends on whether you like that or not.

Wrigleyville has gone through the roof.

Kerry (dymaxia), Friday, 1 August 2003 13:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, many of the R.P. apartments are huge, including the one I looked at for "just" $600. However ultimately I decided safety/neighborhood was more important than apt size. But then I'm not two people, last time I checked.

Kenan: are you finding it hard to find one bedrooms? There aren't that many around. It's 10x easier to find two-beds in my experience.

amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 1 August 2003 13:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm actually a big supporter of Rogers Park. Maybe I'm being naive, but I think the crime rates have gone down within the last few years. I think the neighborhood has gotten saddled with that reputation and it's sorta stuck. Not to say it's pristine, but I know several people that have lived there and haven't had many problems. Plus, it has a thriving community vibe, partially owing to the college students in the area. The Heartland Cafe and Chase Cafe are both neighborhood hangouts as much as anything -- and typical of the many friendly independent businesses in the area. And it's probably the most ethnically diverse community in Chicago, especially combined with Edgewater to the south.

About the location: Estes is 7000 north -- six blocks away from the northern border of the city. You're actually closer to downtown Evanston than to downtown Chicago. For some people, this is ridiculously far north. I have friends who live in Lakeview or Lincoln Park who have probably only been that far north, like, two or three times in their lives. But then again, when I moved to Andersonville two years ago, they thought that was far, too. Whatever.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 1 August 2003 14:16 (twenty-two years ago)

(Ams, did you get my e-mail from the other day?)

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 1 August 2003 14:17 (twenty-two years ago)

live off the red line. 4 blocks or less. let me say it again: live off the red line.
this is the only way. the brown line stops running at 2am, and doesn't run as frequently. the blue line doesn't run frequently, esp. late at night. you do not want to live somewhere where you walk blocks only to have to wait for a bus. this sucks. buses are even less reliable than trains.
good red line stops to live off of: lawrence, argyle, berwyn, bryn mawr, thorndale, granville. it's cheap and safe.
i live in a three bedroom two blocks off of argyle for $1100 a month, heated.
oh, and don't automatically trust ads that say stuff like 'two blocks off the el' cos a lot of times they're written by people w/cars. it may feel like two blocks in a car, but it's actually six. (true story)

praying mantis (praying mantis), Friday, 1 August 2003 14:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Estes is really far north, and that's the problem. That Juneway Terrace area right by the Howard El stop and eastward...is the worst part of R.P. crimewise. I know the Loyola area is getting better (although I don't think of Loyola students in general as a big plus) but that northern part is still a little worrisome.

Yeah don't take "right by the El" at face value. It could mean next door or it could mean a mile.

Far north in itself isn't a bad thing. The red line is mad quick---just 20 minutes from Bryn Mawr to Belmont, for example, if that.

amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 1 August 2003 14:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Sarah and I will be in Chicago over labor day weekend if anyone's up for a FAP./

NA (Nick A.), Friday, 1 August 2003 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll just miss you. Coming into town the second.

Man, apartment locators are assholes. I suppose it's their job to upsell, but I just had a guy get all incredulous when I said "Ravenswood or Edgewater." "You can't get anything there for less than $800!" I had to read his own website to him. Andersonville best buy, $685. Edgewater giant, $650. He stuttered a bit, went to "check on that," and agreed that yes, those were available. Dickhead.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 1 August 2003 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

They have to be assholes for their jobs. It's tragic.

amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 1 August 2003 19:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I would NEVER live with a sexual partner. Everyone I know who's tried it has wound up either living with an ex or breaking their lease.

hi ann welcome to earth.
-- amateurist (amateuris...), July 15th, 2003.

It's more like "welcome to actually dating anyone." I have to learn through observation. Well... maybe I AM an alien. Never mind. Back to asshole realtors... I accidentally avoided a rent increase this year by crying to my very cool landlady about how I didn't get a raise. I swear to god, she just happened to call me about the lease in the middle of my having a fit of pique about work.

Ann Sterzinger (Ann Sterzinger), Friday, 1 August 2003 20:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Woo hoo! I think I found something. Corner of Bryn Mawr and Wayne. The bathroom is bright red tile from floor to ceiling. I'm very excited.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 1 August 2003 23:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I love reading about the virtues of various neighbourhoods in cities I've never been to.

s1utsky (slutsky), Saturday, 2 August 2003 00:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Is East London as bad as it's supposed to be? Is there anywhere decent and inexpensive to live in NYC? What are the neighborhoods like in Tokyo? Is there a ritzy part of Dublin?

Ann Sterzinger (Ann Sterzinger), Saturday, 2 August 2003 00:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha, Kenan, I just came back from a friend's house AT THAT VERY SAME CORNER. That's super-close to my place, too.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Sunday, 3 August 2003 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

one month passes...
So, is "Corner of Bryn Mawr and Wayne" in Andersonville? How do you like it, Kenan, etc?

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 11:40 (twenty-two years ago)

That address is in Andersonville -- but it fell through for Kenan! He's living a couple blocks away, though, still in Andersonville.

Heh, I don't know why I'm his spokesman.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 14:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha ha. Well, I know you're close to Kenan, but are you still in Andersonville? How do you like that area? What's it like?

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

And can you give me a job?

NA (Nick A.), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Nick and Sarah, y'all should move to Humboldt. Better deals, plus corn elotes are available most any day of the week.

hstencil, Wednesday, 24 September 2003 16:16 (twenty-two years ago)

that's more edgewater than andersonville. it's a crappy little area north of the el stop.

p.s. if anyone is familiar with editing and willing to work for low pay, they can have my old job. email me for details.

amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

er, south of the train stop. just.

amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

no, er, actually i'm totally wrong. sorry. it's well west of the train stop and is an ok area. there's a church near there if i'm not mistaken.

sorry for the previous misinformation.

amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 16:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Amateurist, Congrats on totally confusing me.

hstencil, I don't know nuffin' 'bout no ELOTES but I loves me some good ol' corn.

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 17:23 (twenty-two years ago)

elotes = Mexican corn concoction featuring lots of butter and cheese. Most neighborhoods on the Northwest, West and Near South sides have dudes who push elotes carts around all day, you can pick a good one up for cheap.

I hate the North side. There, I've said it.

hstencil, Wednesday, 24 September 2003 17:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Where is the line drawn (between the North and South)?

Sarah MCLUsky (coco), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 17:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Ironically enough, it's not Division Street. The North-South line is Madison. I don't consider the Northwest side or anything on the West side north of Madison to be as insidious as the regular ol' North side.

hstencil, Wednesday, 24 September 2003 17:46 (twenty-two years ago)

So, Lincoln Park would be the North side, right? (not looking at a map) Yuppieville?

What does everyone think of Logan Square?

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 18:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Lincoln Park is most definitely North side, and lame. Logan Square is all right. Neither of those neighborhoods is particularly cheap.

hstencil, Wednesday, 24 September 2003 18:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Hstencil, you can find elotes up here, too, just not as often. You forgot, however, to mention that the corn is often slathered with Kraft mayonnaise that sits in the sun all day. Have I have eaten elotes? No, I have not. (Why did I just write that like Dave Eggers?)

Okay, Sarah and Nick, I don't have to time to add to this thread now, but I will check back later.

(xp) What are you talking about? Logan Square is fairly cheap, innit? Compared to Lincoln Park, Lake View, Wicker Park, Bucktown, etc.? (My brother's moving there in a couple weeks.)

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 18:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I just brought up Lincoln Park because that's one area we explored pretty well. Nick's friend lives there. But it's definitely not on our list and definitely pricey anyway. It's just that some of his friends had mentioned Logan Square as a nice, cheaper area to live...?

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 18:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Logan Square ain't as cheap as it was 5 years ago, when I knew people that lived there.

I still think the way to go is Humboldt, maybe Wicker, perhaps Pilsen.

hstencil, Wednesday, 24 September 2003 18:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Hstencil hates a lot of things, I'm noticing. If you listen to him, I think you run a much bigger risk of getting all your stuff ripped off.

I like the north side quite a bit. I know many people will jump up and defend the west side like it's a competition or something, but I don't see much need for that.

Here's is what I have within walking distance: three grocery stores, two fruit markets, a middle eastern market, three bakeries (two of them Swedish), many places for coffee and sandwiches (all of them decent to very good), beautiful trees and charming old three-flats, the north end of Lincoln Park which provides handy access to an awesome bike trail, not to mention beaches, a staggering amount of bars, many restaurants including a couple that people keep recommending to me without even knowing where I live, and the all-important train. For records and books, I just go a few stops south. Reckless Records in north Lincoln Park is a must. And there's more that I don't know about yet.

Maybe there are better places in Chicago to live, I'm no expert. But I can't imagine anyone complaining too much about the north side.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 18:48 (twenty-two years ago)

We bought a few cds at Reckless during our short trip. In fact, we went in there a few different times. ha ha

Sarah MCLUsky (coco), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 18:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Careful, Kenan - Lake View is not north Lincoln Park. You could get beaten over the head with a baguette for that kind of talk. Just warning you! :)

Kerry (dymaxia), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 19:03 (twenty-two years ago)

For all newcomers to Chicago: www.lptrixie.com

Kerry (dymaxia), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 19:04 (twenty-two years ago)

THat Trixie stuff scares me. Especially things like this. But I was never much into greek life in college either...

Um, now's the part Kerry where you assure me you are not a Trixie.

Sarah MCLUsky (coco), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 19:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh. God. What if they google themselves and find my statement! Then they'll all start plotting to kill me when I get to Chicago - or worse - they'll try to keep me out of high society! NO!!!

Sarah MCLUsky (coco), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 19:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Kenan, I lived in Lakeview, Roscoe Village, Logan Square, Pilsen and Wicker Park when I lived in Chicago, and not once did I get "ripped off," either by burglars or real estate agents. So you can assume all you like about neighborhoods you've never been to, but I have been to your neighborhood, and yes it's nice, but if I was moving back to Chicago, I'd live somewhere else.

hstencil, Wednesday, 24 September 2003 20:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I lived north of Logan Square once; I'd recommend that area ONLY if you have a car and can put up with living miles from the lakeshore. I found it really depressing, all that low-rise concrete. The buildings by the lake are older and prettier and there's... tha lake. I love Uptown.

Ann Sterzinger (Ann Sterzinger), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 22:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yeah, and call me shallow but the girls are prettier here too. If you don't care about being surrounded by pretty stuff and you can tolerate the city's worst el line, knock yourself out, live in Logan Square. But if you must live west then pick Humboldt Park cuz... park! park! It's a great park, actually.

Ann Sterzinger (Ann Sterzinger), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 22:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Hstencil -- I've heard stories. Mostly my statement was based on the stories.

What about the north side do you hate so much?

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 23:28 (twenty-two years ago)

You could get beaten over the head with a baguette for that kind of talk.

Ah, the pitfalls of being new in town...

I meant to say Lakeview, actaully. I'm learning, albeit slowly.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 23:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Hi, Sarah - I actually infiltrated the Trixie society, but they threw me out because I went to the wrong Big Ten school and I don't drive a Jetta.

You can learn a lot about Chicago from the Trixie board. There's a lot of role-playing going on.

Kerry (dymaxia), Thursday, 25 September 2003 13:37 (twenty-two years ago)

REally? You got thrown out? Do you still hang out with them?

Well, we can start our own secret club when I get there, but maybe more along the lines of Secret Pet Detective than greek letters.

I did find the board interesting.

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Thursday, 25 September 2003 13:40 (twenty-two years ago)

i like boring and safe neighborhoods, honestly.

well no that's not entirely honest. if it were i would have been living in albany park or something. or jefferson park. or skokie. i like boring and safe neighborhoods that have prewar architecture and are close to the lake. hence, andersonville and edgewater (and rogers park too i s'pose, but why bother?)

amateurist (amateurist), Thursday, 25 September 2003 18:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I finally ate a Reza's tonight, and I was thoroughly unimpressed. The shitty afternoon buffet at the last middle eastern restaurant I worked at was ten times better then the meal I had tonight. Nearly burnt pita bread with precious little feta, a soup that consisted entirely of parsley, and for a main course, bland stew meat and rice. Just... rice. What am I paying $15 for? And more importantly, why do people keep telling me I have to eat there? I'm scared now. If this is what Chicago thinks is good middle eastern food, I'm screwed.

Where can I find some decent Greek food? Ann?

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 26 September 2003 03:39 (twenty-two years ago)

IMO, Andie's is better than Reza's.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 26 September 2003 04:03 (twenty-two years ago)

(Also, you can find good Middle Eastern elsewhere; I really like Pars Cove on Diversey: they have this great pomegranate and veggie dish.)

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 26 September 2003 04:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Greek food is probably best had in Greektown (just south of downtown, on Halsted) -- but I'm never in that area, so I don't have any recommendations.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 26 September 2003 04:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know what you ordered at Reza's - maybe you had the wrong thing, but I had a good meal there - I got a huge combo plate. And Andie's is better than Reza's, but I liked Reza's when I went there.

Anyway, Rodity's is good for Greek food. I think some people like the Greek Islands, but I haven't been there.

Kerry (dymaxia), Friday, 26 September 2003 18:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Greek Islands is okay. Costa's is good too. I haven't been to Greektown in a long time though.

JuliaA (j_bdules), Friday, 26 September 2003 19:13 (twenty-two years ago)

greektown is like 1/2 a block now.

amateurist (amateurist), Saturday, 27 September 2003 19:54 (twenty-two years ago)

allah is apparently smiling on the Cubs this year.

Little Big Macher (llamasfur), Sunday, 28 September 2003 14:27 (twenty-two years ago)

No, the Cubs fans took the goat curse to Houston. I hope they try it on Atlanta and it fails - then we'll never hear about the curse of the goat again.

Kerry (dymaxia), Sunday, 28 September 2003 14:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I've never heard of the curse of the goat.

If I start trying to talk about sports, I'm only going to embarrass myself. (again.)

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Sunday, 28 September 2003 16:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Billy Goat curse

Kerry (dymaxia), Sunday, 28 September 2003 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

You know, I don't think Boston's ever thought about passing our curse on, but I'm not sure how you really could anyway.

Tep (ktepi), Sunday, 28 September 2003 16:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Chicagoans - how is the public library system there? One of this aspects that makes me most sad about Richmond is the pathetic state of the libraries, with shoddy books, poor selection, and only bestsellers for "new" books. Is Chicago any better?

NA (Nick A.), Monday, 29 September 2003 14:12 (twenty-two years ago)

It sucks - it has no depth and half of what you're looking for is not on the shelves.

Kerry (dymaxia), Monday, 29 September 2003 14:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh well, I've gotten used to buying everything I want to read at used book stores.

NA (Nick A.), Monday, 29 September 2003 15:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Sadly, Kerry is right. I work in Evanston so I do almost all of my borrowing at the public library there (residents of Chicago can check out up to 3 items at a time).

How the library system works: there is one central library downtown (the Harold Washington Library Center), two regional libraries (Sulzer on the north side, Woodson on the south side), and then about 80 branch libraries.

As you might imagine, you're never going to be very far from a branch library -- the problem is, branch libraries suck. You might be able to find a new mega-best-seller or something classic like "Moby Dick" at any given library, but otherwise good luck. They're tiny, and usually pretty random as to what they carry.

However, if you're anywhere close to Sulzer (it's in Lincoln Square), it's not too terrible (comparable to the small suburban library in my hometown, which isn't saying much, but okay.) And if you're working downtown, say, Harold Washington is good but can be really frustrating to navigate. (When I used to temp in the Loop, I'd sometimes go there after work.)

One nice thing: so far, I've had decent luck with ordering books from other libraries. So if the book you want is only available at a library in, like, Jefferson Park (far northwest side), they'll ship it to your neighborhood branch reasonably fast. (NB: I've only done this twice.) And, you can always return books to any library within the Chicago Public Library system.

But yeah, for now, I'm still sticking to Evanston.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 29 September 2003 15:28 (twenty-two years ago)

The Chicago-related collections have the most depth. But they've been slashing the budget for some time now.

It's probably worth checking out, though - especially if you're from a smaller city. Maybe my perception is skewed. I'm spoiled because I have access to my alma mater's library.

Oh - I forgot one thing though. The video collection in the HWPL is wonderful! I don't know what their DVD selection is like, though, because I haven't gone there in about two years.

Kerry (dymaxia), Monday, 29 September 2003 15:31 (twenty-two years ago)

One of my goals in life is to get better record collections in libraries. They usually do pretty well with classical albums, but pop/rock collections in libraries generally amount to the Beatles and then whatever shitty records patrons have donated. (And if they're donating them instead of selling them to a used record store, you know they've gotta be bad.) There's no reason why a major urban library system should not have, like, every record on the latest critics' list of the top 40 best albums ever. But you know that they won't.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 29 September 2003 15:43 (twenty-two years ago)

HWPL used to have a decent LP collection, but of course they got rid of it, and the CD collection is patchy in that typical library way.

I work with the primary CD supplier to libraries around here - they select new releases and reissues themselves and do a crappy job of it. The taste is just a bit boomer-ish - I mean, they'll add the 27th album by some old fart instead of something much more fresh.

Kerry (dymaxia), Monday, 29 September 2003 15:46 (twenty-two years ago)

The problem with Harold Washington is that it's so fucking BIG... which I guess is both a problem and a plus.

You can find great music in the library sometimes. Like this. I guess someone thought they were ordering gospel music.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Monday, 29 September 2003 19:17 (twenty-two years ago)

harold washington library is terribly organized. the entire first floor is a waste, for one thing. the chicago public library system is a disaster. i'm an academic libraries snob though, i haven't used a public library in years.

amateurist (amateurist), Monday, 29 September 2003 22:05 (twenty-two years ago)

We must talk about Chicago more. It's all I've been thinking about. Nick gave our landlord notice last night. I've applied for six jobs today while my boss is out sick. :)

Sarah MCLUsky (coco), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 17:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Pretty sneaky, sis.

What do you want to know?

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 17:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha ha. I don't know. I'm just excited.

Will Nick and I die of hypothermia trying to move into our Chicago apartment in the time between Christmas and New Years?

Do you have any particular warnings about apartment-hunting in Chicago? (other than the fact that the balconies will be the death of us all?)

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 18:46 (twenty-two years ago)

The only thing I can say about aparment hunting is, don't do it from Austin, Texas. That's no fun at all.

But there are empty places all over town, and the prices have hit rock bottom, and renters are desperate. You'll be moving at sort of an off-season, but the market is so in favor of renters right now, that shouldn't hurt you too much.

As for January hypothermia, I'l be finding that out right along with you.

Have you decided on a neighborhood?

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 19:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm excited about winter, to tell you the truth. I'm going out this weekend to buy scarves and gloves and hats at TJ Maxx -- they have a great bargain table. Mom is sending me a wool coat for fall, but that probably won't do for winter. I need a big Michelin Man coat from The North Face, maybe. And I'm heading to resale shops for sweaters and extra shirts and such. OH! And long underwear. I'll definitely need long underwear. I love shopping.

It's cold here already. Low tonight: 38. Be warned.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 19:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Toldja!!! What 'fall'?

Re hypothermia: It is generally among the coldest times of year, Sarah, but not the worst. Probably second or third after the traditional post-New Year's subzero fortnight ...

brian nemtusak (sanlazaro), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 19:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Sarah - if you find any ads, you can post them here, and we will decode them for you. Are you using the Reader online to find an apartment?

Kerry (dymaxia), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 19:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Great idea, Kerry!

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 19:18 (twenty-two years ago)

The Reader won't be much good until a month or two before you actually move. There won't be any ads for January until the middle of November at the earliest.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 19:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Toldja!!! What 'fall'?

Oh, you're just being cynical. It's lovely weather. In the 50's during the day, still mostly sunny, the leaves are just beginning to turn. I can still ride my bike, provided I wear a sweater. I leave the house a little underdressed so that by the time I work up some body heat, I'm perfect. It's chilly at night, but not so cold that I don't want to go out for a smoke. And my winter clothes are so much better looking than my summer clothes, as they tend to hide more of my pear-shapedness. I'm happy as a pig in mud.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 19:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Sarah's left work, so I'll answer: We're not really doing much yet with apts, as it's too soon. Right now, the plan is for me to go up at the end of Nov. or beginning of Dec. and look at apts since I have lots of vacation days. We're looking at all the typical places probably (Wicker Park, Ukranian Village, Logan Square, etc). Where is Ravenswood? (One of my friend-of-a-friend whose helping me with job stuff lives in Ravenswood). Based on the ads we've seen, I don't think we'll have a problem finding a decent apartment for a price we can afford.

If I did the alternative certification program to teach in Chicago public schools, would I get stabbed or shot? (This is just something I'm bouncing around in my head, probably won't do it).

NA (Nick A.), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 19:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, Kenan, the only reason we're moving is because I look hottter in winter clothes.

NA (Nick A.), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 19:33 (twenty-two years ago)

BN writes: Toldja!!! What 'fall'?

KH writes: Oh, you're just being cynical.

I write: Kenan, you're just being bat-shit nuts. This time of year makes me wonder harder, each time it comes around, why for CHRIST'S SAKE I don't wise up and move away from this Satan's freezing asshole by the lake. The cold shears years off my life with every passing "autumn." Must... fall out of love... with the beautiful lake and buildings... find... job... under more reasonable godpissdome...

Ann Sterzinger (Ann Sterzinger), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 19:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Ravenswood is immediately west of Andersonwille, right on the other side of Ravenswood Blvd, appropriately enough. If you plan to use the Red Line a lot, you'll probably want to live a few blocks closer to it.

Ann, we've been over this. You need to move South. You once said that you're not happy until it's 90 outside. THAT, my dear, is nuts.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 19:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Ann, do you want to trade? You can move into our beautiful, large 2-bedroom, $625 a month apartment in balmy Richmond, Virginia, and you can give me your job. Deal?

NA (Nick A.), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 19:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Pretty much on the money, the sunbelt is totally in Ann's future ... and yeah, OK, I'm not quite so sensitive as Ann, this weather is lovely, and the fashion issue is just a fact whatever yr. shape I think--it just doesn't bode well when November shows up in September ...

brian nemtusak (sanlazaro), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 19:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Jesus, did I just paraphrase Gordon Lightfoot?!

brian nemtusak (sanlazaro), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 20:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Kinda, and I'm pretty happy about that.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 20:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I, personally, think it's a sin when I feel like I'm winning but I'm losing again.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 20:02 (twenty-two years ago)

A bone to be chewed! Yarrrr!

brian nemtusak (sanlazaro), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 20:06 (twenty-two years ago)

NA, what do you do? Trade depends on whether I'm even qualimafied fer your job...

Ann Sterzinger (Ann Sterzinger), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 20:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Believe me, you're qualified.

NA (Nick A.), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 13:42 (twenty-two years ago)

If I did the alternative certification program to teach in Chicago public schools, would I get stabbed or shot?

possibly, i know someone who was shot outside of the chicago public school where he was working.

amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 14:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Would it be gauche if I used this thread to mention that my band, Canasta, is playing the Metro on Thursday at 9 pm, opening up for Scotland Yard Gospel Choir's record release show, and that if you get there before 9 pm with a ticket, you can get in for free?

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 14:21 (twenty-two years ago)

JMC, once we get up there, I'm totally going to one of your shows. Also, I'll need you to hook me up with cool people to be in a band with.

NA (Nick A.), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 14:26 (twenty-two years ago)

JMC, I'm just skimming this thread, but tell me -- what's your band like? Pardon me if I'm asking a question that's crushingly obvious to everyone else.

Ann Sterzinger (Ann Sterzinger), Monday, 13 October 2003 19:45 (twenty-two years ago)

No, not obvious. I don't actually talk about it very much. Here's our bio.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 13 October 2003 23:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Jaymc, you should talk about your band more.

Nobody would want my job because I talk about how much of a stupid bastard my boss is all the time. In fact, I'm mad at him right this instant! Whaddya know?!

I want to put a pic of Chicago up on my desktop because I'm excited, but my boss might start thinking things.

Sarah MCLusky (coco), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 14:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Sarah, I would, but truth be told, I'm not always that excited about it. I know, we just played the friggin' Metro, I should be thankful for our success, etc. etc., but too often it seems like I'm putting too much into a band that argues too much and whose music I don't love 100% (I write some of it, but there's 6 people in the band and we're fairly democratic, for better or worse.).

I have to figure out whether that's okay (compromising for the sake of playing music regularly) -- or whether I'd be happier doing something else. At the very least, I want to start playing with other folks on the side, even if it's just jamming, just to keep myself happy and fulfilled.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 14:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I downloaded one of your song samples... uh, do you have a vocalist?

Ann Sterzinger (Ann Sterzinger), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 15:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I understand, jaymc. I am actually sort of relieved to be leaving behind 2 bands when I move.

I really enjoy Times Ten, which is more of "my" band, but also I get tired of my drummer owing me tons of money, tired of reviewers just saying we sound like punk, tired of my bandmates giving the band last priority. I feel like I've put SO much into it. And then about a month or so ago, as my personal life (namely, the move idea) kept me busy, I noticed that neither of them were filling in on setting up shows duty or checking band email duty. And then the drummer told me he's taking his cabinet (which I use in both bands) back to his house so I won't be able to use it my last couple of months here. Blah.

ANd my other band, well, is actually a bit too formal for me. They were shocked and appauled at my idea that we sell (or even give away) our recordings at shows since they weren't done in a pricey studio.

Ok, rant over.

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 15:27 (twenty-two years ago)

too often it seems like I'm putting too much into a band that argues too much and whose music I don't love 100%

This is the reason why I'm not in a band and most likely never will be. Being a session drummer might be fun though.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 15:28 (twenty-two years ago)

If you can stomach the weather, I'd say move to Chicago. The more "immigrants" we have here pushing out the suburban hardcore-purist bands and the dregs of rockabilly and beh the electroclash wit some real pop and rocknroll the happier I, for one, will be. Oh crap, I'm old, I sound like my father.

Ann Sterzinger (Ann Sterzinger), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Ann, we do have a vocalist. The clips on the website are just demos, from before we recorded vocals -- we just wanted to give people a little teaser, since the EP has been delayed for a couple of months now. Our official record release will be on Dec. 6, at Subterranean.

Speaking of which, are you going to see Neal Pollack at Subt on Thursday? I noticed your write-up in The Reader. (I think Kenan and I will both be there.)

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 15:37 (twenty-two years ago)

The more "immigrants" we have here...

I don't want to jinx it!

NA (Nick A.), Friday, 17 October 2003 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Good luck, Nick. That's great.

How is Chicago? It's perfect. It's fall. It's 53 degrees and breezy, and the trees are bright yellow and gold and red and purple. The ivy is the color of blood. I went for a walk through Graceland cemetery the other day, around the little lake, around huge white marble columns and statues and odd egyptian-style mausoleums, and the sun was shining, and birds were singing, and the trees were the brightest colors you can imagine.

This morning I went for a walk through The Loop, staring up all the time, looking unashamedly like a tourist. The grid is powerful. "Wildly authoritative," someone once said. And you can wander in and out of buildings and see marvelous things -- the transfixing moving sculpture in the lobby of Sears; or the small but commanding lobby of the Rookery, bathed in soft sunlight; or the authentic art-deco of the AT&T Corporate Center. A great way to spend a morning.

Tomorrow we're going to a free lecture about "Haunted Chicago," and then I imagine we'll go find these places. Ghosts are good.

Anyway... I like this city a whole lot, in case you can't tell. You must hurry here.

nine months pass...
Fucking shit.

Break out the sweaters and snuggle under the covers–it’s August in Chicago.

A midsummer Arctic blast pushed temperatures to record lows this week, causing water parks to close, beaches to empty and seemingly hearty Midwesterners to shiver beneath jackets and sweatshirts.

By midday Wednesday, it was warmer in Juneau, Alaska, (64 degrees) than it was in Chicago (61). By day’s end, the thermometer had inched only one degree higher, shattering the 101-year-old record of 65 degrees for the coolest high temperature on that date.

Thursday could be equally cold, forecasters said.

Current temperature: 57 degrees. And windy. And wet. It's a lot like San Francisco, actually.

Harold Media (kenan), Thursday, 12 August 2004 13:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, the ladies at work were teasing me for wearing boots this morning, and they're only ankle boots! I said, b-but it's freezing outside...

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 12 August 2004 13:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I will agree that it is cold.

na (Nick A.), Thursday, 12 August 2004 13:27 (twenty-one years ago)

It's time to listen to some autumn music. Chilly grey overcast music. My playlist this morning:

Bill Evans Trio - Sunday at the Village Vanguard
Rufus Wainwright - Poses
Neko Case - Blacklisted
Miles Davis - In a Silent Way
Yo la Tengo - And Then Nothing Turned Itself etc.
Django Reinhardt

Harold Media (kenan), Thursday, 12 August 2004 13:44 (twenty-one years ago)

i reread this thread title as "ally why are you punishing chicago?"

anyway: i dunno, the weather seems nice enough to me.

Harold Media (kenan), Thursday, 12 August 2004 13:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Fall is my favorite time of year, but it's also very sneaky. You get used to the wonderful weather and then winter jumps right in and sticks around well past its welcome.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 12 August 2004 14:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah I made a playlist of mellow music this morning: Smog, gamelan music, Bonnie Prince Billy, etc. This also helps when trying to listen to music, reread "Pale Fire," and ride the el at the same time.

na (Nick A.), Thursday, 12 August 2004 14:32 (twenty-one years ago)

hi I am coming to chicago on friday!!

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 12 August 2004 15:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Weeeeee! What for?
Also, bring a sweater.

na (Nick A.), Thursday, 12 August 2004 15:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I had to turn my heat on last night! I didn't leave it on for long; the problem is I had gone out for a few hours, and left the windows open. When I got back, the room temperature was down to about 68. So I closed the windows and ran the heat for a couple minutes to bring the temp up a little. Still, that's just insane.

I kind of like the premonition of fall, though. I love that time of year too.

Monetizing Eyeballs (diamond), Thursday, 12 August 2004 16:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I love how cool it's been outside! Typically I hate Chicago summers, but this is great.

JuliaA (j_bdules), Thursday, 12 August 2004 17:16 (twenty-one years ago)

This weather would be great if it were October, but it's not. It's August and I want some heat dammit. Not 90 degrees w/90% humidity. I'll take some low 80s. I feel like I slept for two months straight and missed summer. That shit better come back.
