What's the best beer then?

I had a case of Hacker Pschorr Weissebeer left over from my wedding, and man it was good. I just picked up a six of the Oktoberfest, which I haven't tried yet.

I'm not a fan of Pilsner Urquell - but I wonder if I've just had bad luck with skunked bottles.

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Sunday, 27 February 2000 02:36 (twenty-five years ago)

one year passes...
I think we should all agree right now that beer is a rubbish drink. However, say you are drinking beer. What one is best out of all of them? Name a couple you're willing to drink.

Ally, Wednesday, 27 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

For the record, answers besides Amstel Light, Coronas and Red Stripe are wrong.

Ally, Wednesday, 27 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Harp is good. And Coronas + mandatory lime do rock on the patio.

Old Milwaukee and Lone Star = diseased goat piss.

Kim, Wednesday, 27 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

people used to ask for rolling rock when i worked at osco drug..tasted like piss.

kevin enas, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Old Milwaukee, Milwaukee's Beast, Piels, Schlitz & other collegiate beers should hereby be recognized as vile liquid abnormalities that are a necessary step that a college drinker must take before finding their own path.

Of course, this sort of shit makes ALL beer taste like ass. Flavoring it with fruit makes it worse. Guiness would do me more good in my engine. I'd rather drink Zima. I'd rather CHUG Zima. I'd rather FUNNEL Zima. And chase that with MORE Zima.

David Raposa, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What the heck does Zima taste like anyway? Seriously.

Kim, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Much like the vaunted FT Focus Group, attempts were once made by my circle, in this case at UCLA, to Scientifically Determine The Best Beer. This was about ten years ago, and was done on the air at KLA -- in total violation of regulations, you understand. This involved the guys behind the very fine 4ADphile zine _Dewdrops_, who worked there at the time, some friends of mine and me as the person tabulating the results -- the radio program in question was inspired by Negativland's _Over the Edge_, so things were appropriately odd anyway.

The idea was that a range of imported beers were brought in to sample, all while various musical chaos, including a sampled bit of a cappella Blue Oyster Cult ("Raise your glass of beer on high...and seal your fate foreeeeeever!"). In order to deaden the palate between sips and judgment, the worst stuff possible was found in order to act appropriately neutral and nothing. Logically, this was Pabst Blue Ribbon.

Sadly, you can guess the end result. By the end of the program, all involved were feeling incredibly soused, and judgment was eroded accordingly. When the panel reached its alcohol-soaked conclusion, the only beer anyone could remember cohesively was, sadly, Pabst Blue Ribbon. So it won by default.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Traditional bitters eg Fullers London Pride, Jennings Castle Ale (from Cockermouth), Adnams, Greene King etc. However, as anyone who likes real ale will know, they can taste great in one pub...shit in the next (the beer needs to be kept well in order to conserve its quality).

David, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Kim, Zima tasted (that one time) to me like, uh, clear beer. Really.

Ally's moratorium on non-Ally beers is commendable as I have found Corona agreeable (including just now), but the correct answer is surely Guinness. If it can even rightly be considered only a beer.

This talk of collegiate beers confuses me - well, the talk doesn't but the habit of drinking diseased goat piss does. A few weeks ago I had my first opportunity since beginning to drink to sample diseased goat piss. I can't see why anyone would rather drink that in order to get drunk, rather than acclimating themselves to decent beer. Disgusting. And if it's just for the cheaper drunk, as one of my roommates said (Stroh's!) - why not drink vodka?

Josh, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Palm, De Konninck, Taylors Landlord.

stevo, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Real Ales and Belgian beers rule. Find a pub thats full of old men and has won awards from CAMRA to dring real ales or you'll end up drinking stale pipe scum. Recomend the Fat cat Alma Street sheffield. 11 handpull on a bar the size of my kitchen table and a great selection of belgian bottles.

Also Russian beer, Baltika 10, Baltika 6, Nevskoie Originalnoie, Stepan Razin

Beers in pint bottles with silly names, Old Slug Porter.

Guiness original, not of that week old draft muck. Guiness Export hard to find in UK apart from in west indian places, but drink of the gods 7% or 9%

Ed Lynch-Bell, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Here are number one and two top beers:

1)Wadworths 6X 2)Budvar(Czech Budweiser)

Richard, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

6X can be very good when kept well, but this is so rare that it rules it out of my reckoning. Pride is good, Fuller's Summer Ale is even better. Favorite ever is Archer's Golden.

Richard Tunnicliffe, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh dear lord...

For British beer, I have a ridiculous bias towards Caledonian Breweries, cause not only do they have such yummy beer, but such pretty bottles. And all named after random Scots things as well. So you have BURNS ALE and FLYING SCOTSMEN RUBY RED and things like that. Highly yummy.

For American beer the only drinkable thing is Brooklyn. They make a lovely lager, an amazing ale, an incredible India Pale Ale, and the KING of Brooklyn, the superb Chocolate Stout.

However, country holding the title for yummiest beers would have to be the Netherlands, especially for their wheat beers. (leave those horrid Belgian fruit beers alone!) Hoegaarden rocks my world. Orangeboom is lovely, too. But the best has to be the double and triple brews- there's one called Kasteel or something like that which, surely, is ambrosia in beer form.

Ally would hate every single beer I have mentioned, but then again, Ally is wrong.

masonic boom, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Stones' bitter, but only when hand pulled and then only when within about twenty miles of Sheffield. I've had it down here in London and it tastes like piss, up in south Yorkshire/North east Derbyshire it tastes like pure heaven, when it's looked after that is.

Gambrinus lager was really nice in Prague too.

cabbage, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

At risk of being a snotty-nosed know-all, Hoegaarden is Belgian Kate, a town in fact. 'Dentergems', another belgian wit-beer, is also delicious.

stevo, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Unforntunately most Stones in and around sheffield is electric pump or worse, smoothflow, which means that the beer genrally tatses like the devil's own wee served through dirty pipes. Ward's was very good and generally availible on a choice of hand pull or smooth most places, but the bastards closed tghe brewery down and now its going to be yuppy flats.

Stones is very good when it is good though. Orange is a good colour for a beer label.

Ed Lynch-Bell, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

We had a beer world cup. Can't remember who won. Was drunk. Might have been Budvar were it not for a friend of a friend trying to rig it by entering loads of different variations of Miller. To cut a long story short, I generally drink the deeply unfashionable Carlsberg.

Greg, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hoegaarden is BELGIAN??!!? A nonsense! I shall never drink it again!

masonic boom, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Tsing Tsao

mark s, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Quilmes - lovely argentine stuff that you could drink 5 litres of, vomit, then drink 5 litres more - occasioanlly hallucinogenic as well

Geoff, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

don't see Orangeboom on tap here much; they have it at the Betsey Trotwood tho!

I love Belgian beer, speshly Chimay (rouge et bleu).

Of British beers, I really go for Cameron Strongarm and Wadworth Farmer's Glory. I used to really like ABC, but they don't brew it anymore.

MarkH, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

This thread is crying out for sub-classification. To talk about lagers, beers, ales and stouts on the same thread - and then to further muddy the water with white beers is madness I tell ya. Not to mention that different beers serve definate purposes. That said - much of what has been mentioned above is good.

Gambrinus can be found in the odd London pub. I suggest The Lord John Russell on Marchmont St near Russell Square for lovers of this Czech beauty. Other European lagers of note are the aforementioned Oranjeboom (the Trotwood or De Hems) - though the current laughable attempt to rehabilitate Lowenbrau is a step too far. British lagers - only one reigns supreme: Youngs Pilsner.

As for Ales, well the Green King IPA is just nudged out of best summer drink by Flowers IPA (though the former is more reliably kept in Green King pubs). Pride can be lip smacker if on, if off its rank. The three Morrells bitters are all pretty good too - especially Varsity. Oh and Black Sheep is a nice one (blagged shed loads at a trade fair a while back so I might be biased). Tim's your man for this one anyway.

Belgium =- Chimay to me. Especially out of the wine bottles with authentik cork popping action. 9% is mey favourite. And De konnick of course - but I do have a soft spot for Cherry beers when alcopops are not an option.

Beers around the world? Tsing Tao is lovely, as is Asahi - but both seem best with food (which is admittedly where I normally have it).

Budweiser = King Of Beers / Budvar = Beer Of Kings. Which would you prefer.

Pete, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You all are completely wrong, but I like the idea of beer called "Hoegaarden". I'm going to start drinking that so I can say "Hoegaarden". I really hope that's pronounced how I'm pronouncing it - ho-garden. Hos. Hahahaha. Ahem.

Ally, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Being... erm, Belgish, it is actually pronounced something more like "Hcho-harden". Not as fun as it looks.

masonic boom, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ho-garden would be a great name for a girl band.

I love guinness, but if I'm honest but any beer I get for free instantly becomes the best beer.

Nicole, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Nah, that's still fun.

Budvar. Oh, man. I went to this club in Brighton (I think) - cramped, dark, lots of red, big signs over the bar. One said, in big letters, BUDVAR. Ooo, sounds exotic. So I order one. Never mind asking what Budvar actually is - I'm a loner, Dottie, I'm a rebel. (I have no idea where that line is from, by the way.)

God damn it, I hate beer. How the hell did this concept of "beer" develop, anyway? "Gosh, if you soak wheat & barley in water under pressure, it fucks you up righteous like! Kick ass!"

David Raposa, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sapporro, Orangeboom, Budweiser, Old Speckeled Hen, Guiness Stout, Murpheys Irish Stout,Beck's, Red Hook w/ Starbucks', Molson Ice, Sing ha, and Genesee Cream Ale all have found us e in my gullet. But Sadly, dark beers make me puke.

Mike Hanle y, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I find myself drinking a lot of Harpoon and Bass when I go out, despite my favorite beers being the stouts from Guiness and Murphy's and good old Boddington's. However, when I buy beer for home consumption, it is almost exclusively Corona.

I do have a very soft spot for Sapporo and Kirin, though. Ah, college...

Dan Perry, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Corona? You need to live in a place with good weather to enjoy Corona -- another reason to move to LA. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Peroni (great Italian beer served in Pizza Express) and Sam Smith's 'natural' (made with mineral water, of course.)

Andrew L, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey, I can enjoy a Corona anywhere. It's that good!

(Cue the awful taglines from a commercial thread...)

Dan Perry, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

There is a theory that beer may have been an important trigger in establishing the world's first civilization by the Euphrates. In order to make it you need grain, and by cultivating it in order to produce beer agriculture first developed. Sounds too appealing to be true.

stevo, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Anchor Steam is very good. Mmm.. warm day, no job.... laterzzz!

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I like Budweiser. Chugging it in one sip leads to a feeling of drunkenness around the fifth can, due to turning of stomach producing lightheadedness. People who care what beer they're drinking, for reasons other than to complain about it, are stupid.

Otis Wheeler, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

People who drink beer, period, are idiots. Beer is disgusting, it's rubbish, it's what you drink if you just have nothing else at all available (and you've run out of your own urine). However, it's a rule that you can't play baseball and not drink beer. I think Derek Jeter drinks in the dugout - it's seriously like a law.

Ally, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Um, I think you're talking about male softball. The beer of sports - seemingly pointless & stupid (since playing baseball is much more fun, obviously), but it's OK in moderation & with the right people, and after you start, you get used to it soon enough.

Baseball = chewing tobacco.

David Raposa, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll have you, Mr. Perry, that my new coworker Tom Porrino is a Boston native who cast an eye over this thread and agreed with me that the weather was indeed a very good reason to be here. Give in. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Beer sucks big chunks, especially when it's turned into a religion Québec's other religion = hockey, which I also can't stand - or maybe they're both Gods of the same religion - they sure do seem to be tightly connected.

Patrick, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

David sez: "I'm a loner, Dottie, I'm a rebel. (I have no idea where that line is from, by the way.)"

I sez: "It's the title of a song by the Get Up Kids."

I stand by my Coronas. Molson's good tü. Never cared much for the Brooklyn Brewery stuff. I always thought it just tasted like Coors, ergo "Shit."

JM, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, yeah, I knew THAT, but I'm guessing they got it from somewhere else, too.

David Raposa, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

David sez: "I'm a loner, Dottie, I'm a rebel. (I have no idea where that line is from, by the way.)" I sez: "It's the title of a song by the Get Up Kids."

And before that, it was a line from Pee Wee's Big Adventure...

Nicole, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, Ned is right, the weather is one good reason to live in LA, but I am still looking for a second good reason. The local vegatation, perhaps. Oh, wait the lack of mosquitoes, there is reason #2.

Tom Porrino, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Pee Wee's Big Adventure - now THAT sounds like a thread to me.

Ally, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I do have relatives there, and proximity to Disneyland could only be a plus in my eyes. Who knows, maybe Joei will end up going to UC- Irvine to get her masters!

Dan Perry, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Then get yer ass in gear. Dammit.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ally can't drink beer due to being too tarty. It makes it too bubbly.

Mike Hanle y, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What about worst beers? On a few occasions I've been in places that don't have proper bitters, and I've thought 'oh..I'll have Caffreys', but it *always* makes me feel ill.

David, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

the worst beers are my favorite beers. because the only reason im drinking beer is if i want to get drunk for real cheap. bad=cheap, so im stoked. ill drink a 40 of steel reserve any day, 2$ PBR at Doc Holliday's on ave. a, six of natty ice, dollar bud specials...im poor, i want to get drunk. anyone familiar with yuengling??? anyone growing up in pennsylvania goes through the yuengling rites...its actually a pretty good beer though...

amy, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

oo! and i really really really love drinking hard lemonade and smirnoff ice and stuff like that...i dont know what to classify them under...

amy, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think Mike Hanley just called me a tart! Take it back, you rascal.

Ally, Friday, 29 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think Smirnoff Ice is an alcopop. I was quite into that sort of thing (and Bacardi Breezers, what an aspiring Essex girl I am) until my boss told me that's what his 17 year old daughter drinks. In my day it was cider but kids are clearly growing up faster these days.....

Emma, Friday, 29 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Alcopops - Classic or Dud is on its way I think....

Pete, Friday, 29 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Tarty tart Ally of Tartytown!

Mike Hanley, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

We have bar here called Hoegaarden, done up in motif of that beer. Hence "did you meet your girlfriend at the ho garden?" and even more hilarious madcap japery!! Belgium beers: had (twice) and quite liked Leffe Blonde. Ordered from bargirl thus, "I'll have a leggy blonde" and readily apparent, NOT THE FIRST PERSON TO SAY THAT.

AP, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The best Belgian beer is Duvel. It tastes lovely and blows your head off in the nicest way possible. After drinking a few bottles around my birthday last year I ended up unable to speak properly, then running shouting through streets, then thinking it would be a good idea to get up at a party and sing Foxgloves and Magnetic Fields songs in front of very minor indie pop stars. It was a fun night. I think.

Ally C, Sunday, 8 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

So do I. And I've never even heard about it till now.

Best North American beer is Clancy's made by Moosehead but only sold in New Brunswick, I know I've sung its praises elsewhere here. European beers I'd take Leffe Brun or Hacker Pshorr over Hoegardden. When in America I doubt one can get better then Sam Adam's Octoberfest.

Much as I love our American friends, beer and cheese are two subjects on which they're just going to have to bow to superior taste buds of Europeans. Canadians are exempt as they have given us Sleemans. Or rather they've mostly kept it for themselves, as I've only just managed to find it in the UK.

I really can't be doing with calling Budweiser "Budvar" nonsense. I've heard in the US it's called "Czechvar". How fucking insulting is that? It's like suddenly deciding that the Simpsons must be refered to as the Yanksons because we've just decided to use the Simpsons for some pathetically inferior product of our own.

I also have a strange fondness for Turkish beer.

Yes, Duvel is mighty fine. I tried some witbier in Brussels which was even nicer than Hoegaarden, but I've forgotten what it was called for some reason. Maybe I'd been drinking.

Tag, Thursday, 31 October 2002 23:02 (twenty-two years ago)

"they call budvar "budvar" in the "czech republic."

They do? I stand corrected. Anyway, my understanding is that in Europe the Czech Budweiser was sold as Budweiser and the American imitation was sold as merely "Bud", whereas in the UK both were allowed to trade under the name "Budweiser". "Czechvar" just sounds completely absurd.

Anyway I was only kidding with my mischievous generalisations. Americans I know seem very fond of their "watery, domestic". And there is something 'traditional' about beer in cans and sporting events. I'm still not convinced about the cheese though.

Efes is the Turkish beer I like.

Tag, Friday, 1 November 2002 10:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Mmmm Old Speckled Hen Pale Ale seemed oh so tempting last night. It started off well with the beer, which, being served at the Dove in Hackney (nobby beerophile pub), was very tasty indeed. So that gets my vote currently.

Then I drank a bottle of Stowells' Tempranillo and danced like a fool with Shoreditch TwatXors. Oh my head.

Oval is great but my very favourite beer is brewed by Anne De Rijk in Herzele, Belgium (who've I met at a beer festival). A small traditional brewery, it has survived the multi-nationals, through dedication and by producing exceptional beer with wonderful pure clean quality.

Mrs De Rijk's grandfather established the brewery which is still barely known outside the immediate area. Perhaps beer of this quality can only be produced on a small scale but I do wish it was more widely available. I only know it as the owner of my local café was so impressed he travels down to Belgium every month to ensure his is one of only two places in Holland that serves it.

Beer writer Michael Jackson on De Rijk

Austrian beer is great stuff, better than German (heresy!). That said, I really miss American microbrews as long as they don't get too fancy with the flavourings, and intend to reacquaint myself over the Thanksgiving holidays.

Chris is so on the money re: Prospect that there's not even a tiny shiny hint peeking out from underneath. This is not a comment on the size of his bum though. For lo, I can verily talk.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 15:30 (twenty-two years ago)

j. fail: I would be interested.

fletrejet, Wednesday, 26 March 2003 15:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, I don't really drink that much beer, but I like:

Corsendonk [Belgium]
Corona [Mexico, duh]
Zlatorov [Slovenia] --- The YUMMIEST.
St. Ides Special Brew [snoop dogg drinks it...]

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 16:26 (twenty-two years ago)

st. ides special brew isn't beer.

maybe i'll create the beer board when i make I Love American Football (before next year's NFL season starts, which is really when i drink the most anyway).

j fail (cenotaph), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 16:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Ally--your initial post of 2 years ago still rings true to this day (minus the amstel). Though I miss St. Amboise, Boréale Blonde, Cheval Blanche, and Griffon Pale terribly.

cybele, Wednesday, 26 March 2003 16:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I would feel terribly sorry to see beer talk siphoned off to another board which I didn't have time to read.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 16:43 (twenty-two years ago)

of course that could be the beer talking

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 16:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't like Coronas now.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 17:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Brubaker is where its at. $1.50 a bottle.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 17:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Ho-garden is delish. And I like Maredsous, which has all the alcohol of Olde English 800 High Gravity with none of the baggage.

Aaron A., Wednesday, 26 March 2003 17:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Deuchar's IPA is rocking my world at the moment. I want to find it on draft somewhere. a lovely hoppy nutty pale ale.

But its still Timmy Taylor's Landlord for me.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 17:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Old Milwaukee, the beer that made St. Louis famous.....hey, wait a minute...

Skottie, Wednesday, 26 March 2003 17:41 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah...St. Louis isn't famous

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 17:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Pabst Blue Ribbon!!! which I drank by the gallon this past weekend. I like Julius Echter as well.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 17:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Best (really) cheap brews: Olympia and Schaeffer's

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 17:49 (twenty-two years ago)

ANCHOR MOTHERFUCKING STEAM

also Negra Modelo.

g--ff c-nn-n (gcannon), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 17:57 (twenty-two years ago)

(Anchor Steam only tastes good when bought west of the Rockies...same goes for Sierra Nevada)

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 18:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Carlings Black Label and Gennessee are pretty...ugh an older woman I work with just farted.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 18:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I have developed a fondness of Church Key but its been a while since I was last at C'est What on account of having too much fun with the chalk.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 18:11 (twenty-two years ago)

If anybody's ever in Cincinnati, OH and looking for a good beer, chiggity-check yo'self into The Barrelhouse, a microbrewery/restaurant/concert venue. Their beers are among the best in this hemisphere, and pretty creative and bold. When they served me a hefeweisen with a slice of lemon, I was like "wha?", and then took a chug and suddenly the Universe made sense.

But as far as beers go, I generally choose Guiness when given that option, and am also quite partial to Fuller's line, especially their ESB. Asahi, accompanied by sushi, has made for some of the only actually good dates I've ever been on. Hell, from the Newcastle to the Heine to the Anchor Steam to the...< homer > aaaaaaah beeeeeeeeeerrr aaaaaaah < / homer >

And there are employers in the South in the States who will pay their employees in PBR. This phenom really does exist. Wild stuff, mang.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 18:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Some of my favorites: Aventinus (wheat dopplebock), Old Rasputin (imperial stout), Anchor Liberty Ale (borderline IPA), Ara Beer (unclassified Belgian), Trois Pistoles (Dark Belgian Trippel), and Phatome de Noel (Dark Belgian Christmass beer) and on and on.

Amstel Light, Coronas and Red Stripe - There is no point in paying $$$ for imported light lager that tastes just as bad as the American version. And as far as I know, there is no law saying you couldn't put a lime in your Coors Light, so none of this "Coronas are good w/ the lime" nonsense ("oh but it looks so cool with the bottle!") In fact I prefer Pabst Blue Ribbon or Yeulings to any of these.

fletrejet, Wednesday, 26 March 2003 18:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude, if you can't tell the diff. in taste between a Michelob Light and an Amstel Light or a Red Stripe, then there's no hope for you.

American beers taste...sweet to me. It's bizarre.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 18:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, have we discussed the beer-appropriate-for-each-variety-of-weather issue?

Fr'instance...

Summer day = india pale ales?
Winter day = thick stouts?
Autumn eve = dark lagers?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 18:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Summer Days = Budweiser and wiffle ball.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 18:38 (twenty-two years ago)

There is no acceptable conditions for indie pale ales in this day and age. Grab a Corona and stick a lime in it if you must. For some reason I find myself drinking Sleeman's lager more in the summer though so Im a freak according to my brother.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 18:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Nastro Azzuro, Budvar, Tiger, if I actually am talking best best beer, Asahi is nice with food.

Within my pricerange, I tend to get carlsberg.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 18:48 (twenty-two years ago)

>Dude, if you can't tell the diff. in taste between a Michelob Light and an Amstel Light or a Red Stripe, then there's no hope for you.

Yes, there are some minor differences in taste between these beers, for example AB products like Mich have that godawful rice flavour, but in the end its like comparing the tastes of different brands of Amercian cheese - even the best are taste like crap compared to the real stuff.

>American beers taste...sweet to me. It's bizarre.

Light lagers have virtually no hops, so the only flavour your going to get from them is from the malt (mostly corn), which is sweet. Even this flavour is very light compared to malt-heavy beers like dopplebocks (very very sweet, esp. Aventinus). So if a beer has no hop flavour or malt flavour, I don;t see how it has ANY (good) flavour - which is why I prefer PBR to Corona.

fletrejet, Wednesday, 26 March 2003 18:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I never saw how IPA's made good summer drinks. They are good with spicy food though. My seasonal beer drinking is something like:

Summer = Pilseners, Hefeweissens
Winter = Dopplebocks, Imperial Stouts, high alcohol anything
Autumn = Oktoberfests, duh

fletrejet, Wednesday, 26 March 2003 18:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Been drinking nothing but Grolsch lately. Strange as I usually vary brands all the time.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

My favorite beer full-stop is Anchor Steam.

Their Liberty Ale is good too. I also like Sam Smith (Oatmeal Stout!), Duvel, Chimay, Bass, Negra Modelo, and Harp. Brooklyn and Dominion are serviceable.

Most overrated - Sam Adams
Most underrated - Miller beers, MGD especially

Having put a few years between me and college, I do not plan on drinking Rolling Rock ever again for the rest of my life.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 27 March 2003 04:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the ones what got alcohol in 'em

Millar (Millar), Thursday, 27 March 2003 04:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Them ones what ain't got alcohol, you might as well be drinkin' a damn sprite.

Millar (Millar), Thursday, 27 March 2003 04:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Very briefly,

GOOD (though there are many many more):

Delerium Tremens (one of my favorite Belgians although I'm quite certain there are better ones I just haven't tried yet)

Shakespeare Stout (produced by the wonderful Rogue brewery on the Oregon coast, this stout is FAR superior to its European predecessors--although both Beamish and Guinness are pretty good).

Anchor Brewing's Special Ale (produced for Christmas/New Year's, these exceptional beers are even more flavorful and drinkable than Achor Steam)

Ayinger Brau Weisse (perhaps the best hefeweizen available today)

BAD (though there are worse):

Sparks (a bright orange alcoholic energy drink -- stay away)

Monkey Face Porter (the concept being that you 'pucker' as the acrid sour mess boils up your esophagus; it perpetually tastes "off;")

Widmer makes/made a beer that tastes/tasted like cheese, and I have mixed feelings about their pumpkin beer. I've never had a smoked beer that I liked either.

GOOD VALUE (aka cheap but drinkable)

Pabst 24oz tall boys can be found for $0.99
THE beer of unemployed NW hipsters, Pabst is a good alternative to corporate American domestics. Only slightly worse than Tecate, but far cheaper.

Olympia 11oz. stubbies (bottles like red-stripe) come in boxes of 12 for about $6
Bad beer but made with good water which makes a big difference when you are drinking the cheap watered down stuff.

Ryan McKay (Ryan McKay), Thursday, 27 March 2003 12:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I second the OTM WRT Prospect. I love it so. I need to find more pubs which serve it. I even trekked all the way to Holloway Road again the other night just so I could have some lovely Prospect. NEED. MORE. The Old Bob was alright but not at all as nummy. But ph33rs0m3ly strong!

Beer good...

Sarah (starry), Thursday, 27 March 2003 12:30 (twenty-two years ago)

The idea of an Oregon stout being superior to its European predecessors sounds so unlikely I'm almost tempted to go to Oregon to try it!

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 27 March 2003 13:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Harp? UGH dude you mentalist, harp is now 1 euro a can at my local off licence and I still choose "Dutch Gold" over it, does any other country have Dutch Gold other than Ireland, even though it's made in Holland? I also sometimes buy Bavaria Lager which peculiarly is brewed in Amsterdam. To be honest cans are all so disgusting I don't think the difference between cheap ones and expensive ones is worth it, bearing in mind what a total ripoff beer is over here.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 27 March 2003 13:33 (twenty-two years ago)

>The idea of an Oregon stout being superior to its European predecessors sounds so unlikely I'm almost tempted to go to Oregon to try it!

For any major European style of beer, there is an American version of it that is at least as good as or superior to European examples. Its one of the few things that make me proud of my country right now.

fletrejet, Thursday, 27 March 2003 14:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Best? Chimay.

Also good— Sheaf Stout, Guinness, Pyramid Apricot Ale (you’ve got to try it), Leinenkugel’s, Old Nick, most Belgians (lambics can be nice on a hot summer day)...

No One (SiggyBaby), Thursday, 27 March 2003 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

its like comparing the tastes of different brands of Amercian cheese - even the best are taste like crap compared to the real stuff.

A very very VERY apt assessment.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 27 March 2003 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

There are some really great microbrews in Virginia, where I live. Just down the road in Richmond is the locally-famous Legend Brewing Company, makers of the complex, hearty, delicious dark beer "Legend Brown" -- try one if you're ever town (and email me for an FAP!). I also really dig Sierra Nevada, a microbrewery in California I'm sure some of you US beer-heads are familiar with.

Imports are tough, because, as stated previously, they're crud if improperly stored. Guinness is usually a safe bet (though I've never had Guinness outside of the US), as is Bass. I LOVE Sam Smith's lager and pale ale (have yet to try the oatmeal stout) as well. Chimay is a bev of the gods. A light lager is a light lager, but I do like Corona and Moosehead pretty alright.

To me, there are "just having one pint" beers, and there are "getting fuX0red" beers -- each type has its time and place, and its own special perks, but if I'm buying a six-pack for myself, I'll always go for the "one pint"-ers. And American microbrews are usually pretty safe bets for where I am.

Clarke B., Tuesday, 1 April 2003 19:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I'm the only person who likes Budvar and Budweiser.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Anybody ever had McNally's? It comes in a big 32 oz-ish bottle, at least it did when I had it. It was one of the best bres I ever tasted--had a faint toast-ness to it--and the store I got it from never had it again and no one there remembers it.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, Spencer, I live literally less than a mile from the Anheuser-Busch brewing plant in Williamsburg, VA, and the occasional Beerwinds that drift over my way have a less-than-savory aroma, to say the least.

Clarke B., Tuesday, 1 April 2003 19:20 (twenty-two years ago)

How could I forget Chimay? There was a time when a young 19-year-old nickalicious didn't drink the spirits (after a brief senior-year-of-high-school drinking spree) and worked in a 5-star restaurant making salads and appetizers and deserts, and one day our owner/head chef said "hey Nick, drink this" and I said "I don't wanna" and he said "No, I really think you oughta drink this". It was Chimay, I drank it, 3 more that night (whilst on the clock no less!), and was a drinker once again.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 19:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I honestly feel that people who categorically dismiss beer ought to at least try some of these drinks -- especially Chimay. Seems like it could be a real gateway beer.

Clarke B., Tuesday, 1 April 2003 19:27 (twenty-two years ago)

You guys talked me into it...I used to get Chimay way too much, but I don't think I've drank it for 2 years or so. Tonight, that will change.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 19:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Chimay is a pretty bitter-tasting introduction for beer dismissers. Also agreed, the smell from the Budweiser plant in Van Nuys is pretty terrible.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 19:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Factory in foul stench producing SHOCKAH!

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 19:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Enjoy it, oops!

You might be right, Spencer. Sam Smith lager I could see easily convincing someone that beer can be smooth, refreshing, and yummy.

Amateur question, but what is lambic?

Clarke B., Tuesday, 1 April 2003 19:33 (twenty-two years ago)

When I was in Toronto about a year ago I had some Big Rock ale from Alberta. I don't know if I was just thirsty or what the hell was going on, but I'm pretty sure that was the best beer I've ever had. Unfortunately, it's only available from Ontario west and in the American Northwest, so I can't get my hands on it here in DC.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 19:33 (twenty-two years ago)

the best beer (perhaps ever) is harpoon's winter warmer.

i will not argue this.

harp is my everyday beverage of choice since harpoon isn't distributed west of pittsburgh.

otto, Tuesday, 1 April 2003 19:33 (twenty-two years ago)

You could probably get it online, but ordering beer online... that seems to be a whole other level of fandom that I can't quite comprehend yet.

Clarke B., Tuesday, 1 April 2003 19:35 (twenty-two years ago)

You could probably get it online

i emailed harpoon when i moved to chicago two years ago, they basically told me to go shit in my hat.

otto, Tuesday, 1 April 2003 19:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha, it's probably like two guys in a basement. "Who the f*ck does this dude think we are?!"

Clarke B., Tuesday, 1 April 2003 19:41 (twenty-two years ago)

EXCELLENT. I'm drinking nothing but Harpoon from now on in honor of their customer service dept.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 19:41 (twenty-two years ago)

You should become their mascot or something.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 19:45 (twenty-two years ago)

no, harpoon is a reasonably medium-large microbrew now (nevermind the oxymoron). i used to go to their events all the time when i was younger. my picture was in their newsletter for chrissakes. they were real polite about it but they said there really wasn't anything they could do.

otto, Tuesday, 1 April 2003 19:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, and you'll never be seen w/o you hat full of shit

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 19:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey Clarke, email me sometime.

Nick A. (Nick A.), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 19:50 (twenty-two years ago)

the missing 'r' in my last post makes it look like I despise Dan.
You gotta admit it, though: calling someone a 'hatfull of shit' is grebt.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 19:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Will do, Nick...

Does anyone know what a lambic is?

Clarke B., Tuesday, 1 April 2003 19:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes.

Oh, you wanted to know what it is? Spontaneously fermenting (the brewers don't add yeast) wheat beer from Belgium. Old & young lambics can be blended to make gueuze.

Mooro (Mooro), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 20:07 (twenty-two years ago)

And if you brew a lambic w/ black cherries, its called a kriek and if you brew one w/ raspberries, its called a framboise, and these are actually easier to find than plain lambics/geuezes. Lambics are very sour and taste very unbeerlike.

Fruity, clovey Hefewesseins make a good gateway beer because they have very little hop flavour.

fletrejet, Tuesday, 1 April 2003 20:15 (twenty-two years ago)

gueuzesthetics!

Mooro (Mooro), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 20:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I was once highly addicted to a tiny micro-brew called Sutter Creek ______(something or other. Crap. This Guinness must be going to my head!). Anyway, they went out of business, but my mother managed to grab three of their last bottles. And they're all still sitting in my fridge, going stale, because I hate to open them and know that they'll be gone forever. Is this maudlin or what?

I'm Passing Open Windows (Ms Laura), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 03:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Best: Guinness (from tap best if you're not in England or, ideally, Ireland), VicBitter, Cascade, Tooheys, Bodds, John Smiths, I like a lot of German beer but can't remember the brand names.

Worst: Heineken, Hahn Ice (both water gas and hangover), West End (Worst End) and until you've had half-flat, warmish bottled XXXX from an inadequately rinsed plastic mug at the Gabba in Brisbane, you have not had bad beer.

Alas, fully carbonated, ice cold XXXX straight from the tap into a brand new chilled glass is not hugely better.

Fred Nerk, Wednesday, 2 April 2003 10:53 (twenty-two years ago)

wot no Coopers? beer of the gods. and me. Espesh the best extra stout.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 21:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Oops, did you ever have that Chimay? How'd that work out for you?

I tried my first hefe-weizen tonight -- from a brewery that claims to be the first maker of hefe-weizen in Germany -- and boy was it delicious.

Clarke B., Thursday, 3 April 2003 05:06 (twenty-two years ago)

agreed on heineken, it's so awful

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 3 April 2003 07:49 (twenty-two years ago)

But I had a lovely glass of heineken when I went on the tour in amsterdam. It was very refreshing. But I wouldn't have it in a pub, I wouldn't have larger, not when there are lovely ales to be had.

My favourite when I go back to my parents is Castle eden, but it wasn't too special last time I had a pint. there was talk about the brewery being taken over, and I don't know what the outcome was.

Vicky (Vicky), Thursday, 3 April 2003 08:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Oops, did you ever have that Chimay? How'd that work out for you?

No, not yet. Went over to my friend's house to see if he wanted to go to the liq store w/me, but before I could ask he offered me a Guiness and said I could have as many as I want--I'm not one to look a gift horse in the mouth.
Tonight sounds good though (I'm not a lush, I drink maybe once every two weeks and only 2-3 beers/time). Now the only question is which version of Chimay...I have a hard time leaving the store w/anything but the one w/the highest alc %.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 3 April 2003 14:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Ones I forgot - Saranac (duh! black and tans especially rule) and Paulaner.

I also really dig Sierra Nevada, a microbrewery in California I'm sure some of you US beer-heads are familiar with.

That's a little big for a microbrew. And it's somewhat overrated.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 4 April 2003 03:27 (twenty-two years ago)

A girl I know drinks Sierra Nevadas exclusively. It's tasty, sure, but why make that your only beer?

I like Sam Adams, Goose Island, Blue Moon. I've also gotta mention the very refreshing Bell's, since I went to school in Kalamazoo, where it's brewed. Kzoo represent!

jaymc., Friday, 4 April 2003 03:38 (twenty-two years ago)

sierra nevada tastes like pine needles. in a good way.

goose island doesn't do much for me, i like bells amber. i think blue moon is owned and brewed by the coors family.

otto, Friday, 4 April 2003 12:38 (twenty-two years ago)

you went to kzoo, jaymc? Did you ever see DJ Stroh and his crew? Bells is indeed the shit.

oops (Oops), Friday, 4 April 2003 14:26 (twenty-two years ago)

There is a Scottish beer, Alba, that is brewed with pine needles and no hops. Pine needles were a traditional beer preservative agent in Scotland before the introduction of hops. Its actually tastes pretty good.

The cascade hops in Sierra Nevada Pale Ale (they make other beers) always tasted to me more of a grapefruit flavour.

Blue Moon is brewed by Coors, and its the best product that any of the big three american brewers make - not that that is saying much.

three months pass...
is it just me or is Directors Bitter really quite bad.

and what are peoples thoughts on the various Youngs beers?

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 31 July 2003 09:14 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm quite fond of Directors Biiter actually..
Youngs is meh.
Otherwise UK fave is Newcatsle Brown Ale, while worldwide the mighty Czech Velkopopovicke Kozel rules supreme

Fabrice (Fabfunk), Thursday, 31 July 2003 09:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I disagree with Fabrice in every way except in terms of Velkopopovicke which I've never tried.

Youngs Ordinary = very fine session bitter, I can't think of a bad word to say about it except that the pint of it I was served in the Clock Hose a few weeks ago had a sparkler in the bottom (ouch).

Youngs Special = I don't, any more because it's stronger than its taste justifies.

AAA = very very nice indeed on its day, the fruitiest of the three.

All that christmassy chocolate stuff I can live without.

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 31 July 2003 09:35 (twenty-one years ago)

gales HSB, fullers London pride, green king abbot ale, adnams best adnams broadside, adnams old, hopback summer lightning, dragon stout, guinness, pilsner urquell, budweiser budvar, grolsch (when very cold), duvel, hogaarden, de konijk, leffe brun, corsendonck and too many other belgians to name... these are a few of my favorite things.

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Thursday, 31 July 2003 09:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I've got a lot of time for the Youngs Special, I like 'em strong.

Directors has been ok a couple of times, in the Endurance it was revolting.

chris (chris), Thursday, 31 July 2003 09:49 (twenty-one years ago)

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 31 July 2003 09:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I always find it a bit flat and sour myself.

chris (chris), Thursday, 31 July 2003 09:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Bombardier is top stuff, but not to be drunk in large amounts. This goes double for the bottles, whose contents is about a quarter as strong again.

RickyT (RickyT), Thursday, 31 July 2003 10:07 (twenty-one years ago)

all beer is to be drunk in large amounts you wuss!

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Thursday, 31 July 2003 10:09 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm going out trainer shopping then hope to make a brief appearance to say hello to y'all and then have to get home as i will be getting my rave on checking out dan bell later on, so may not do the massive booze thing then - but you can pretty much bank on it some time ;-)

The beers I drank last Friday were quite good. Aecht Schlenkerla Rauch and Fordham's Oyster Stout. At least until that crazy bitch poured the dregs of her martini into my stout without my knowing. At least it wasn't roofies.

Everything I've had since then has been utter rubbish. I believe from now on I'm going to try and stay away from the overcarbonated yellow stuff as much as possible (budget allowing).

Millar (Millar), Thursday, 31 July 2003 10:33 (twenty-one years ago)

D? are you talking about that ayingerbrau D pils stuff... if so no way... that's only one short step away from special brew - have had a run-in or two with it before!

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Thursday, 31 July 2003 10:36 (twenty-one years ago)

where is dan bell on dave?

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 31 July 2003 10:41 (twenty-one years ago)

chris (chris), Thursday, 31 July 2003 10:51 (twenty-one years ago)

The only correct answer is "Whatever I am drinking", I've found.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 31 July 2003 12:54 (twenty-one years ago)

the best answer to what? you've gone nuts...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Thursday, 31 July 2003 12:56 (twenty-one years ago)

you all need to come to ontario and try creemore springs. then it will be "whatever i am drinking" – and thus, the correct answer.

dyson (dyson), Thursday, 31 July 2003 13:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Dyson, close but wrong, get thee some Clancy's, similar but better then Creemore. Only place I've found this beer in Ontario is at Duke of Argyle. go figure, its 'Nova Scotia' themed.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 31 July 2003 13:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Warsteiner (Pilsner or the Wheat one), Harp & Guinness are probably my favorites, but I ususally get some type of Michelob or Sam Adams because import beer in Kentucky is freakin' expensive. I can't even find Warsteiner around where I live, but it is good beer.

Meisterbrau, Wisconsin Club and Falls City are my favorites of the shit beer category. Wisconsin Club used to be the best, you could get change back on a fiver, it came in bottles and then one could use the boxes to make furniture. Quite a mulipurpose brew for the cheap.

earlnash, Thursday, 31 July 2003 13:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Thursday, 31 July 2003 13:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I have to say that this thread features the most ridiculous statement I've ever read on Ile.

chris (chris), Thursday, 31 July 2003 14:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I get cases of Krombacher thru work, it owns.

Matt (Matt), Friday, 1 August 2003 01:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I prefer Hoegaarden blanche in the summer, Guinness the rest of the time.
I learned after going through six or seven different beers at DC's Brickskellar (500+ beer list) that ending with this particular Polish brew (v high alcohol content, odd cough syrup aftertaste) will pretty much wreck the next day..

daria g (daria g), Friday, 1 August 2003 01:46 (twenty-one years ago)

In the blanche league, I recently discovered the true nectar of the summer.. the amazingly refreshing Erdinger (from Bavaria I think). I used to hate blanches but after one pint of Erdinger on a warm Berlin night, everything was revealed..

Fabrice (Fabfunk), Friday, 1 August 2003 06:50 (twenty-one years ago)

chris is your mind boggling at the mention of harp a little further up?

so lets get this right earlnash "harp" as in dutty dutty english 70s lager hell???

(i've just finished man walks into a pub so have learnt all about how carling is canadian and lagering and all sorts...)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 1 August 2003 12:51 (twenty-one years ago)

nope Steve, I'm sure that some people enjoy Harp. There's summat far more ridiculous than that.

chris (chris), Friday, 1 August 2003 13:00 (twenty-one years ago)

"blanche"?!

Proper terminology:

German style wheat beer (e.g. erdinger) = weisse
Belgian style wheat bear (e.g. hoegaarden) = witbier

fletrejet, Friday, 1 August 2003 13:06 (twenty-one years ago)

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 1 August 2003 22:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Hello, it's with regards to the quality of beer in America, haven't got time to find it unfortunately, but I tried some of the new american premium small brewery beers when Safeway were selling them not long ago on a promo, and largely they were really really disappointing.

chris (chris), Saturday, 2 August 2003 10:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks for clearing that up, piggy.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 2 August 2003 10:24 (twenty-one years ago)

you should go to wisconsin and visit the lakefront brewery and the new glarus brewery.

chris, not N.

I think I probably made this "most ridiculous" statement and I still stand by it. Of course there are terrible american microbreweries but there are also some very very good ones that I mentioned upthread.

Chris Barrus: North Coast is great! Their 2003 Old Stock Ale is probably my 2nd favorite beer right now.

Chimay. Ha.

Millar (Millar), Saturday, 2 August 2003 19:37 (twenty-one years ago)

it's not bloody aingerbraü. Chimay is good but Duvel is better for barminess. Millar, we need to FAP Brussels.

Ed (dali), Saturday, 2 August 2003 22:08 (twenty-one years ago)

there are many good american beers, i think i would quite like a shiner right now come to think of it

gareth (gareth), Saturday, 2 August 2003 23:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm feeling homwesick for St Austell Ales. Specifically Wreckers.

Matt (Matt), Sunday, 3 August 2003 00:36 (twenty-one years ago)

i'll admit that the belgian and u.k. stuff at it's best is in a league of it's own.too many to choose from, really. I love all things sam smith. thomas hardy ale is friggin' unmatchable in the over-the-top category. the list goes on and on. rodenbach grand cru is a fave of mine. saison dupont just might be my favorite euro beer. and then there is the german stuff too. but the states-kinda like with wine-have come a long, long way. near me in philly there are breweries that could match some of the better stuff overseas. and that's just near me. Victory brewing, Yards, Stoudts, Weyerbacher(who make amazing belgian style brews.) then there is dogfishhead in delaware who make some of the best stuff in the world. they are famous for their 18% worldwide stout but their other stuff is amazing as well. and that really is just the tip of the iceberg. course, i drink the local water-yuengling-just as much as anyone around here.
right now i am drinking a yummy Rogue Soba ale that they made especially for Iron Chef Morimoto(who has a restaurant here in town) I don't think i even know what soba is, but it's tasty! ( Rogue is from Oregon )

scott seward, Sunday, 3 August 2003 00:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd give you a shiner if I could, gar.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Sunday, 3 August 2003 01:00 (twenty-one years ago)

i miss those old lids that mickey's used to have. i guess they figured they were to hard to open or something. you had to pull them out using a forceful and tricky wrist movement. mickey's fighin' bee mascot was the only corporate logo that i ever contemplated getting a tattoo of.

A round of applause to Millar for introducing me into the wonderful order of the Chimay initiates! I actually brought someone into the fold myself a few weeks back. It's pretty much the only beer I've been willing to drink twice.

Girolamo Savonarola, Tuesday, 18 November 2003 01:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I have a new answer to this - Adnams Regatta! Much better than the normal Adnams (and I suspect it may be a seasonal ale), Regatta is rich, dark, hoppy and - most importantly - nummy! It is also reminiscent of the late, lamented Wadworths Farmers Glory.

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 4 December 2003 10:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I know little about beer but common american beers are watery compared to the canadian ones. I'm not talking dark beers, I really like light ones. Here in Ontario the best I've had are Sleeman's Cream ale, and Creemore springs as recommended by Dyson a little ways upthread. Light, but a lot of taste.

sucka (sucka), Thursday, 4 December 2003 11:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I was very confused when I ordered that cream ale in Ottawa only to find that it wasn't ale at all!

If at home: Timothy Taylor 'landlord' strong pale ale: http://www.timothytaylor.co.uk/llordfr.htm

mmmm, pale ale.

o. nate (onate), Saturday, 23 October 2004 03:49 (twenty years ago)

my god...

guinness is not a beer but a stout. it's not even close to being a beer. it's more like....like a ....hamster or something than it is a beer. it's not a beer, ok?

stout

anyway, the finest beer (not stout) known to man is indeed the brew known to all who ever gripped it's uniquely shaped (sexually exciting) receptacle as Erdinger.

Chimay may be the best beer, but that's not an everyday beer. When I'm out at a bar and want to savor what I'm drinking instead of just getting drunk on countless rounds of $2 PBRs, I'll usually get something like an Anchor Steam or a Sierra Nevada.

jaymc (jaymc), Sunday, 24 July 2005 04:26 (nineteen years ago)

Wait, did I mean Leffe when I said Chimay? One of the two, I can't remember.

Whoa, this thread was actually started on June 27, 2001.

i like how victoria bitter isn't a bitter but is in fact a lager! (and like it)

ken c (ken c), Monday, 1 August 2005 15:46 (nineteen years ago)

No spittoons no.

The form was that we were tasting bottle conditioned beers rather than bottled beers. there were two panels of five people tasting 6 beers scoring them out of Appearance, Aroma, Taste and After-taste; with weighting given to the taste score of course. The first panels consisted of two guardian readers and 3 CAMRA volunteers each. My team had three dark beers of differing types, mild, porter and darker styles, 1 classic red bitter and 2 lighter style beers. About a 3rd of a pint of each. Held up to the light for appearance, swirled and sniffed for aroma and then tasted. Beer was brought out in unlabled jugs. 1 beer of the first round stood out as a beer I would like to drink a good deal more of and one stood out as dark, interesting, and chocolatey but too sweet for my liking, probably a malt stout.

We tasted and filled in our forms discussing each beer in turn but keeping our scores private.

After the first round they needed a 4th guardian reader for the final panel, I was picked after a little typical British 'no you' session. The final panel of 1 CAMRA type, Roger Protz and 4 guardian readers, although of these 4, 1 was a chemist/brewer who formerly worked for Badger and apparently the man who came up with the idea of putting elderflower in beer to make golden champion. Again tasting 6 beers with the favourite from our first round coming through as the eventual winner.

I learnt some new things, including scientific grounding for Hopkin's no drinking outside rule. Apparently a true real ale drinker will not expose his beer to sunlight as 'lightstrike' can ruin a beer in 20 seconds.

As for the competition; I was suitably impressed with the winner, however the competition wasn't as strong as i had hoped. There seems to be a slight problem with bottled conditioned beer (as opposed to bottled beer) in britain, it doesn't seem to be an art that has been honed to perfection. The beers fell into three categories: 1) Beers that are sold as cask beer and have been bottled conditioned as an afterthought; 2) Beer of types that are too weird to be generally sold in cask quantities; 3) Beers brewed for the bottle because the brewery is too small to get a wide distribution of it's products in casks.

Across all types there seems to be an over egging of the bottle conditioning process with over gassiness, presumably in search of a head, being a common trait although in the better cases this eased off if the beer was left to stand a little. Flavours were good but in a lot of cases you couldn't help wondering if the draught beer would have been better. All in all British bottle conditioned beer seems to lag behind Belgian bottle conditioned beer.

The winner is a lovely beer none the less, a lovely sparkling ruby bitter from the north east, hoppy with a nice lingering bitterness and just the right amount of malty body. It did need to stand a little to let the gas off.

I'll let you know what it is tomorrow.

Wow.

Like the CAMRades at GBBF, no doubt.

In Pinefoxian stylee:

Blandford fly was...not as good as I'd hoped. I had a load of St Peter's Lemon and Ginger Bitter at the Jerusalem last week, so was expecting good things but it's not a patch on St Peter's stuff.

Golden Glory is on tap in Holborn. Can't remember the pub; either the Enterprise or the Old Nick (I think). Not a patch on Golden Champion, which I have now staretd ordering crates of.

Tomorrow, I will get hold of some Westvleteren which will be grebt.

i don't like ales or dark beers very much. my favorites are Red Stripe, Anchor Steam, and this beer at a local resturant/micro-brewery called 21st Ammendment, 'South Park Blonde' which is really good with a burger and fries.

josche, Friday, 5 August 2005 14:04 (nineteen years ago)

Allagash White is in the style of a Belgian witbier not a German hefeweizen.

Good, interesting Belgians are anything by De Dolle and Phantom. Also Panil Barrique, which is an Italian but in the style of a Flemish sour brown ale.

On my way home from work today I decided to treat myself and pick up a Zwyviec, Poland's favourite lager. Takes me back to happy times in that fine country. It's 5.6% and tastes mighty fine.
Has anyone tried Carpathia? It's another Polish one I think. They're selling it in Stereo in Glasgow. Damned tasty.

Stew (stew s), Saturday, 6 August 2005 16:14 (nineteen years ago)

Zwyviec I think, has a cool little global hypercolour style label on the back that displays the logo if the beer is cold enough, thye have it in our local offie, it's good.

milo z (mlp), Friday, 30 June 2006 02:45 (eighteen years ago)

I seem to do most of my drinking at home these days & buy most of my beer at the supermarket (living the suburban dream): the current favourite is Brakespear's Organic Ale. This is i) superlatively delicious: properly bitter in a way bottled beer so often isn't & unpasteurised so it has that 'from the pub' taste, ii) not too strong (four point something, rather than five point something like most bottled beer), so you can drink plenty of it, & iii) ridiculously cheap - 3 bottles for £4 at Asda.

Haha, I can still remember the first time I had my first pint of hophead shortly after moving down here a few years ago, I think it finally convinced me just how much better real ale is than bland megacorp bears. And it was £1.70 a pint then - those were the days!

It's good, but I'm not sure it counts as beer.

Of course it counts as beer - lambic beers I believe actually existed before "convential" beer.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Friday, 30 June 2006 10:24 (eighteen years ago)

er, a rather unconventional way of spelling "conventional".

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Friday, 30 June 2006 10:26 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, if anyone has an Oddbins in their area, they do three rather nice beers from a brwerey called Williams from Alloa: 'Gold', 'Red' and 'Black'. The names are self-desriptive. And the best bit? The 500ml bottles only cost £1.29, making them the cheapest beer they sell in there.

which i just did, with no success.

toby (tsg20), Monday, 3 July 2006 08:42 (eighteen years ago)

I'd say try Morrissons, I picked up a bottle of Mathers (iirc) Black beer from there on Saturday, just the thing for making Sheffield staout apparently (which is black beer shandy!!)

Porkpie (porkpie), Monday, 3 July 2006 09:31 (eighteen years ago)

You can get pint bottles of Mann's Brown Ale from Asda. This is more or less mild - it's less than 3 per cent abv, which takes a bit of getting used to, but it is very pleasant esp. in summer.

bham (bham), Monday, 3 July 2006 12:16 (eighteen years ago)

Microbrewery stuff can beat all challengers when in best form, but I've also had some of the worst beer from them.

Belgian beers are good but way too sweet at times -- St. Bernardus is a favorite, all kinds of Chimay come next.

I probably have ended up drinking mostly Boulevard Wheat (regional out of Kansas City) and Newcastle, lately. My beer horizons have been expanded greatly with the addition of a new bar to town that has around 100 beers on tap. Unfortunately, that means that they have one keg per beer, so if it's out, it's out until the distributor delivers more. It also means I'll never get to sample everything they have at one time since they'll rotate out beers...

taco freebie (mike h.), Monday, 3 July 2006 12:51 (eighteen years ago)

I've also had some of the worst beer from them.

VERY true!

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Monday, 3 July 2006 12:59 (eighteen years ago)

"Microbrewery" is kind of an overused term, though. I've heard people refer to everything from a brew pub that only serves beer in-house to Sam Adams refered to as "microbrews." Worst has to be a brew pub I went to where we found zero good beers out of the beer sampler. The wheat one tasted like someone had taken bad wheat beer and added Five Alive.

I drank pedigree a lot when I was younger, I think I've had Old Empire a few times, good but not spectacular.

I was drinking Discovery at the weekend, which seems to be completely changeable, one time really good, the next distinctly average.

In this hot weather I've been drinking more lager, mainly Staropromen and Saqn Miguel, more as thirst quenchers than anything else. The usual stuff I've enjoyed a lot lately like Achel just doesn't feel right in such heat.

Budweiser is the best, has anyone tried it? Czech Budweiser, that is, from near Pilsen. Better than UrquellI. I can still taste (well almost) my first sip thirty years ago. I heard you can get it in NYC and apparently all over Europe

Atlanta ILXors, I need help -- I'm coming that way in 2 or 3 weeks, and want to make a beer run while I'm there. Where do I go for the best selection?

I just found out from Tep that Lindemann's makes an apple lambic now.

I drank exactly 4 Blue Moon Pumpkin Beers this weekend, they were yummy, although they didn't taste quite as good as they looked in glass at sunset.

My mom found this six-pack of Miller High Lifes in tiny little 6oz bottles, they were so cute I almost tried to give one to the boy (he has in the past tasted and decided he does NOT like beer, howev).

Okay, Lindemann's apple lambic is really good. That yeasty lambic aroma, tart apple front end, lambic sourness in the finish. Like Granny Smith hard cider, sort of.

2) i post another, unrelated comment expressing surprise that no one has made the blue velvet joek

- 3 Samuel Smith Winter Welcomes
- 2 Delirium Tremens
- 1 Schneider Hefeweizen
- 1 Rodenbach Red
- 1 Lindemann's Gueuze
- 2 Lindemann's Apple Lambic
- 1 Lindemann's Framboise
- 1 Lagunitas Freak Out! Ale
- 1 Cantillon Organic Gueuze
- 1 Wychwood Hobgoblin Dark Ale
- 1 "build your own 6-pack" consisting of
-- 2 Sweetwater Brown Ales
-- 1 K Hard Cider
-- 1 Red Brick Winter Brew (dark chocolate oatmeal porter)
-- 1 Kirin Ichiban
-- 1 Warsteiner Premium Verum

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Saturday, 28 October 2006 02:06 (eighteen years ago)

did you build your own six pack at macs?? i like that red brick

and what (ooo), Saturday, 28 October 2006 02:25 (eighteen years ago)

Yep. It's kind of funny and lucky how the beer run went. I went to Mac's, but there were three big delivery trucks there and nowhere to park, so I said 'fuck it' and went to Green's -- thanks for those recommendations, by the way, I went to both on your say-so. Green's had a better selection by far I thought, so I did most of my loading up there, but stopped in at Mac's, built a sixpack and bought one more apple lambic, and called it done.

Django Blowhardt (Rock Hardy), Saturday, 28 October 2006 02:33 (eighteen years ago)

I sincerely hope the K in your selection pack is not the same as K in the UK which is a drink favoured by tramps. Lots of good stuff there though (apart from the Sam Smith vinegar, my views on which are widely known)

Ed (dali), Saturday, 28 October 2006 06:29 (eighteen years ago)

I have no idea about the K, there wasn't a "lol @ u" sign below it or anything. I like Smith's pale and brown ales and the Winter Welcome.

Django Blowhardt (Rock Hardy), Saturday, 28 October 2006 12:24 (eighteen years ago)

Many many people disagree with me about Sam Smiths, it is the drink of london ILX.

"- 1 Lindemann's Gueuze
- 2 Lindemann's Apple Lambic

Well at least you'll get the contrast between real lambic and 3% fruit juice.

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 04:10 (eighteen years ago)

Anheuster-Busch (AB)and Czech brewery Budweiser Budvar have signed an historic deal that will allow the US brewing giant to import and distribute the Budweiser Budvar brand alongside its own Budweiser in 30 US states. The Czech beer will be known as "Czechvar" in the US.

The deal is unlikely to mean an end to almost 100 years of bad feeling between the two companies over which has the right to use the Budweiser name. It has no impact outside the US, and, Tony Jennings, chief executive of Budvar UK, Budweiser Budvar's wholly owned UK subsidiary, says: "There have been no concessions on the trademark question by either side. It remains unresolved."

Jennings adds that AB "need us much more than we need them" because the deal underlines the shift in beer drinking away from mass-market products towards speciality beers.

The agreement only covers North America and Czechvar will continue to be brewed at source in the Czech Republic. The Czech brewery continues to be state-owned, and AB is not taking any kind of stake in it. Previous attempts by the Czech government to sell off part of its stake, and fears that AB might buy it, led to public outrage in the Czech Republic.

AB has already signed similar importing and distribution deals with Grolsch, Tiger, Kirin and, recently, InBev, for the Belgian beer giant's Stella Artois, Beck's and Bass Pale Ale brands.

Basically, it's all about flavourful darks (Guinness is OK but the bottom of the heap really; a lot of good house labels in WNY) or really hoppy IPAs as far as I'm concerned. hops shortage = worst nightmare

Duchow affirms that for small brewers who run short of hops, one alternative is to make sweeter, maltier beers. So if you enjoy the full-bodied Belgian ales and fruity Lambics, there could be opportunities for you in what is otherwise a — forgive me — hopless situation.

noooooooooooo

dan m, Monday, 14 January 2008 20:30 (seventeen years ago)

hopping isn't the inverse of sweetness. It is possible to have a dry interesting taste without smothering in hops. Goose Island honkers is a good example.

I'm just saying that beers that are more on the malty side are not what I find myself coming back to. Same for the very smooth beers and/or varieties that are nitro-charged.

Honkers is OK, but has kind of reached saturation point for me. Did you get to try any Three Floyds products while in Chicago, Ed?

dan m, Monday, 14 January 2008 20:42 (seventeen years ago)

Speaking of malty, sweet beers, I was hoping that the other New Belgium beers would be different from Fat Tire, but sadly I have not found that to be the case.

jaymc, Monday, 14 January 2008 20:43 (seventeen years ago)

Didn't get a go on it. Honker's is just one example, not a bad one really.

Ed, Monday, 14 January 2008 20:44 (seventeen years ago)

I really like both really hoppy beers and sweet, malty Belgian style ones. I don't mind the sweetness if they're pushing 10% alcohol, and I don't like to drink a lot of these - but the Brother David's Triple that I had last night was really good.

Dan, did I tell you that I made K@tie drive me to the big booze emporium in Lincoln Park to buy Gumballhead?

xxp: I like a couple of the New Belgium beers, and dislike Fat Tire. They're kind of hit or miss but there are some good ones.

joygoat, Monday, 14 January 2008 20:46 (seventeen years ago)

my friend just emailed me an article about 'extreme beers'. i generally love these kinds of beers, just 'cos i think they taste great. i like how aggressively hoppy they are. but with the hops shortage they'll obviously get pricier and pricier.

http://www.iht.com/articles/2008/01/10/style/09beer.php?page=1

yea, i generally don't like malty sweet beers. just not my thing.

Mark Clemente, Monday, 14 January 2008 20:47 (seventeen years ago)

xp Shit, you didn't even have to go that far, though I bet the price would be better there than at some places in our neighborhood.

dan m, Monday, 14 January 2008 20:56 (seventeen years ago)

man saturday through sunday I had 0 beers until I went up and fixed my landladies' wireless router for them and they gave me a fucking Heineken and you know what that Heineken was delicious. Hunger is the best spice and all that, I figure.

El Tomboto, Monday, 14 January 2008 20:59 (seventeen years ago)

the US could do with fewer overhopped beers.

so very very untrue

Mr. Que, Monday, 14 January 2008 21:01 (seventeen years ago)

i understand why some people wouldn't like super-hopped beers, but i love them.

i can't really remember going "eww, too hoppy", like, ever.

^^me neither!

Mark Clemente, Monday, 14 January 2008 21:03 (seventeen years ago)

also: Malty sweet beers are the bane of my drinking existance.

YES^. ewww brown sugar

Mr. Que, Monday, 14 January 2008 21:06 (seventeen years ago)

I drank a sixer of Bell's Two Hearted on a football sunday and by the 8pm game I felt like I had just imbibed a basket of flowers

my only problem with the dryhopping fad is that my regular adult beverage shop now stocks lots of these to the exclusion of a lot of other beers that I like. They don't have a lot of room in the beer cooler so lately I go in and the only microwbrews in there are IPAs or variations thereof and sometimes that's just not what I want

El Tomboto, Monday, 14 January 2008 21:08 (seventeen years ago)

yea i can sympathize with that. though i'm often in similar situations with regard to belgian stuff and/or wheat beers, where those are the main specialty stuff stocked and all i want is a highly-hopped IPA.

but in general the most poorly stocked type of beer tends to be stouts. i could really go for a better selection of stouts in beverage stores.

Mark Clemente, Monday, 14 January 2008 21:11 (seventeen years ago)

My latest random purchase is Blue Star Wheat:

dan m, Monday, 14 January 2008 21:14 (seventeen years ago)

Mark Clemente, Monday, 14 January 2008 21:16 (seventeen years ago)

dan m, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 05:52 (seventeen years ago)

can't read through whole thread. my favorites, ever:

- Russian River Sanctification (California)
- Perla (Polish)
- any Bell's
- Stoudt's Scarlet Lady Ale (a most recent discovery)
- most of the Great Lakes brewing co. roster, especially the Dortmunder Gold and Burning River, as well as the exclusive stuff you can only get at the brewery (10% alcohol beers that are unbelievable good, trust me))
- any Rauchbier
- Magic Hat no 9
- Monk's Sour Flemish Red Ale
- Yards Extra Special Ale
- Thomas Hardy Ale (you guys know this guy...crazy beer)
- Bush (Belgian, hands-down one of the best beers i've ever tasted, never seen it in the US)
- Dogfish Head 90-Minute IPA (and the 60-minute IPA is also sweet)
- Hevelius (Polish)

BUT: geographical distinctions aside, let's go into a major supermarket that is well-stocked. i'm gonna say in the northeast, but that's where i'm sort of at. (that and the midwest).

best beers in major supermarket:
- Pilsner Urquell
- Warsteiner
- Beck's
- Heineken
- (local brand that isn't in any supermarkets outside of your area, your choosing)
- Blue Moon
- Budweiser
- Yuengling (esp the Lord Chesterfield Ale, rarely found outside of Pennsylvania)

the table is the table, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 06:13 (seventeen years ago)

Budweiser is the best bet for the money, no matter what. i am speaking as a very poor person right now-- i'd spend more money on beer, instead i spend it on internet.

My Central PA beer experience, by Ed:

so I was in this Bar in Lock Haven PA drinking a Yeungling and eating some killer wings (Hangar 9, nice little bar, good wings god steaks) so I ask the Waitress to bring me something local (or at least PA), she says sure they are attached to the bottle shop next door and have like a hundred beers or so, she asks the bar tender and he recommends a [I forget] she goes off and they don't have . I say bring me something like an amber ale or a nut brown and sche comes back with a Michelob Ultra Amber. The End

great lakes is amazing - i like every beer i've had from them. you're spot on re: the exclusive brewery-only stuff - they always have incredibly beers there. it's one of the best parts about cleveland.

the burning river pale ale is excellent (one of their best), the dortmunder is one of my favorite lagers, their new IPA is really good, too, and the blackout stout is by far one of the best imperial stouts i've ever had.

with my family being there, i try to bring back some great lakes whenever i visit there. everyone i've brought it back to has loved it.

Mark Clemente, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 15:27 (seventeen years ago)

http://cbs2chicago.com/local/Tom.Seefurth.pizza.2.336977.html

ST. CHARLES, Ill. (CBS) ― Beer and pizza are tastes that, for many of us, just seem to go together. But, beer that tastes like pizza?

As CBS 2's Vince Gerasole reports, a suburban brewer has put a new twist on tap.

Something's brewing in a garage in St. Charles. Tom Seefurth is mixing up a concoction he'll eventually pour out as beer – pizza beer.

"It's pizza and beer in a bottle," Seefurth, a self-proclaimed beer nut, says.

There are actually real pieces of pizza stirred into the mix.

The kettles and tubes of Seefurth's tiniest of breweries all come together beside the hundreds of beer cans in his collection.

"This is a reflection of my entire life history," he says.

Too many garden tomatoes cooked up the idea for pizza beer last year. Seeforth and his wife create a tomato garlic puree and bake up the pizza -- in the back yard they pick their own oregano for flavoring.

And back in the brewery Seefurth even grinds his own wheat to get the process started. He'll add other spices, but keeps the recipe a secret.

"The only people who know the recipe are me and my cat, Jethro," he says.

Seefurth says the flavors of pizza and beer are a natural pairing, and the hobbyist hopes to take drink coast to coast.

You can try some 'Mama Mia' beer for yourself in the next few weeks. It is being sold at Walter Payton's Roundhouse in Aurora.

omar little, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 23:40 (seventeen years ago)

http://allagash.com/images/pics/curieux.gif

To make the Curieux (French for "curious"), we age our Tripel Ale in Jim Beam barrels for 8 weeks in our cellar. During the aging process in bourbon barrels, the beer is totally transformed, and many new flavors and aromas develop. Most notably, the beer picks up soft coconut and vanilla characteristics...and also a hint of bourbon flavor!

Available in: 750 ml bottle and 5.17 gal kegs
ABV: 9.5% - 10.5%
Original Gravity: 1080
Recommended Serving Temperature: 55°F
Recommended Cellaring Temperature: 55°F

sam york, Monday, 8 December 2008 18:48 (sixteen years ago)

Per Ian's post above, like Rogue Dead Guy, but I had a couple Rogue Junipers on draft recently, and they were very tasty.

jaymc, Monday, 8 December 2008 18:49 (sixteen years ago)

Hofbrau Original is my new favorite.

this, absolutely. i wish i could get it here.

runners up: paulaner original, pilsner urquell, spaten
honorable mention: bass, harp, newcastle, smithwick's.
best cheap beer: pbr

modernism, Monday, 8 December 2008 22:06 (sixteen years ago)

we should get develop a catch-all beer thread to make up for the 5 or 6 threads out there...

but in any case, i tasted a pretty insane stout this weekend (and extremely well-balanced one, for a big stout like this):

founders breakfast stout:

mark cl, Monday, 8 December 2008 22:14 (sixteen years ago)

weird, didn't show up. anyways it has a baby eating a bowl of oatmeal or something on the bottle, it's a thick, black, opaque stout that's brewed with coffee, chocolate, and oatmeal

mark cl, Monday, 8 December 2008 22:15 (sixteen years ago)

Duvel is a perennial favorite.

any if you Nashville folk tried the Yazoo beers? I dig the ESB and the pale ale a lot. They won some big award for their Hefeweizen, but it was prob my least favorite of the bunch. Brewmaster L1nus is first cousins with one of my oldest bros.

grr

mark cl, Monday, 8 December 2008 22:16 (sixteen years ago)

i have been digging the sour ales as of late, but they are def a love/hate sort of thing. also less satisfying in the winter death freeze.

MINOTAUR FACEPLANT IS ITS OWN REWARD (John Justen), Monday, 8 December 2008 22:19 (sixteen years ago)

leinenkugels' honey weisse is pretty pointless, or perhaps I should say it has a lot of "drinkability"

El Tomboto, Monday, 8 December 2008 22:21 (sixteen years ago)

+ thanks to bud light admen for giving me a new term to describe the degree of similarity between a beer and a glass of tap water

El Tomboto, Monday, 8 December 2008 22:22 (sixteen years ago)

I finally figured out what a "session beer" means.

jaymc, Monday, 8 December 2008 22:25 (sixteen years ago)

harp is fucking disgusting! omg how can someone say harp...

Coal Scuttle Now Meaningless, Monday, 8 December 2008 22:27 (sixteen years ago)

no idea, takes all kinds

El Tomboto, Monday, 8 December 2008 22:27 (sixteen years ago)

Schneider Aventinus Weizenbock is the answer to the original question AFAIC. Weisse-style mouthfeel, light enough to drink during the summer but has a hint of cloves at the finish that makes it perfect for right now. 8% abv but you don't taste it. You know that Snoop and Dre video where they are at the house party and some guy opens the fridge and it is filled with 40s? I want to do the same with this beer.

Shh! It's NOT Me!, Monday, 8 December 2008 22:31 (sixteen years ago)

this list is kind of lame but it's partly inspired by drinking nostalgia... the beers that hold that subjective "best" place are pretty much all from my o.g. boozing days

wheat: paulaner dunkel weizen
pale ale: bell's
amber: bell's
brown: bell's
stout: so many of these taste the same to me... something something oatmeal something
lager: leinie's original

Your original display name will be displayed in brackets. (dan m), Monday, 8 December 2008 23:19 (sixteen years ago)

I almost never drink stout, but a few of us had the Left Hand Milk Stout last weekend, which is v. drinkable.

jaymc, Monday, 8 December 2008 23:22 (sixteen years ago)

rotating top 10:

01. Grimbergen (Belgian)
02. Sam Smith's Oatmeal Stout
03. Spaten Optimator
04. Guinness or Muphy's*
05. Bell's Two-Hearted
06. Dogfish Head - the one with raisons
07. Delerium Tremens
08. Red Hook ESB
09. Bell's Porter
10. Fat Tire amber (from Colorado)

*only if fresh from the brewery (i.e. made earlier that day & delivered to a local pub in Dublin or Cork respectively)

D'Andrelo, the gay white ex-con (Pillbox), Monday, 8 December 2008 23:32 (sixteen years ago)

also just wanted to say how happy I am to see that Bell's is making such a strong showing on this poll. K-zoo reprazent!

D'Andrelo, the gay white ex-con (Pillbox), Monday, 8 December 2008 23:37 (sixteen years ago)

I've also gotta mention the very refreshing Bell's, since I went to school in Kalamazoo, where it's brewed. Kzoo represent!

lol appropriate. i did not see that. did you go to WMU or K.College jaymc? I went to KVCC for my freshmen year, but transferred to UM after that. I still return to Kzoo and visit friends on occasion, and invariably spend some time at the Bell's brewery while doing so. Love that place dearly.

D'Andrelo, the gay white ex-con (Pillbox), Monday, 8 December 2008 23:41 (sixteen years ago)

I went to K College. The funny thing is that I didn't turn 21 until March of my senior year, so I've actually spent more time at the brewery on return trips than I ever did when I was a student. Beer on tap there is delicious, and so cheap, too.

jaymc, Monday, 8 December 2008 23:48 (sixteen years ago)

y exactly. I was never able to go the brewery when I lived there - just when I went back for visits. I actually spent the first few rounds of my 21st birthday there.

D'Andrelo, the gay white ex-con (Pillbox), Monday, 8 December 2008 23:50 (sixteen years ago)

rotating cast at the moment:

dogfish head pangaea,
dogfish head palo santo marron,
leinenkugel's fireside nut brown,
cooper's sparkling ale,
paulaner hefeweizen or schneider weisse or weihenstephaner,
sam adams winter lager

think I've mentioned it but the coney island albino python was really good, I hope we see it again but I kind of doubt it

El Tomboto, Monday, 8 December 2008 23:53 (sixteen years ago)

schneider weisse is really good.

for me right now

hoegaarden or that white kronenberg
paulaner wheatbeer and their lager isn't bad either
innis & gunn oak aged beer
and oddly I like heineken in the UK as far as pub beer goes. In Dublin it's a diff brew which is one of my most loathed lagers, but apparently it was relaunched here as a different brew with new taps etc. pretty good stuff.

Coal Scuttle Now Meaningless, Monday, 8 December 2008 23:57 (sixteen years ago)

Lately for me:

Leffe Blond
Alaskan IPA / Deschutes Inversion IPA (my usual defaults)
Rogue Yellow Snow
Oaked Arrogant Bastards
Great Divide Hibernation
Unibroue Fin Du Monde
Cans of Olympia

The most drinkable ones I'm on right now:

Sam Adams Winter Lager (it's everywhere, but it's damn good, slightly hoppy and bitter, kinda spicy, very woody)
Red Hook ESB (solid all around)
Rogue Dead Guy (I bought it by the jug at the beer store)
Full Sail LTD (I don't know the details behind this one but it's so damn drinkable, not too bitter, I want to have gallons and gallons of it)
Most anything by the Dogfish guys

regarding beer, I just finished a six pack of New Belgium's 2 Below, which was pretty good. Lots of crazy hop flavor, not a lot of bitterness. I'm looking for some good xmas/winter brews, if anybody has any good recs. Liked the goose island mild winter ale a lot, though I kind of want something less, uh, mild.

If I'm not mistaken, a couple of years ago there was this weird thing for a few hours where everyone's post was backdated to June 26, 2001. Maybe it also fucked with threads that were actually started on that date.

nine months pass...

for some reason i've been gravitating towards heineken when no smaller brew strikes my fancy (mainly if i'm not in the mood for a pale ale of some sort) and whenever i decide to buy heineken before i got to the liquor store, i feel good about myself because it's a big brew and will be cheaper but then i remember that it's actually like... $9 for a six pack because it's an "import" - shit is so fake!

(i still buy the heineken anyway)

no hongro (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 17 October 2009 04:54 (fifteen years ago)

bud >>>>>> heineken!

ian, Saturday, 17 October 2009 05:11 (fifteen years ago)
