duane (doorag), Wednesday, 23 July 2003 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Small Change is great and has a couple of my all-time favorite Tom Waits songs on it, most notably "Step Right Up", which was the tune that destroyed my early teenage notions that Tom Waits' songwriting abilities were limited to the 'bummer' end of the spectrum.

The rainy weather here has been inspiring my listening choices today; so far I've listened to Sigur Ros' Von, and Joy Division's Closer, and am currently rocking to the max Morphine's Bootleg Detroit live album. Shit. Yeah.

I think I'm gonna put Fantomas' Director's Cut on next as my fight-the-afternoon-lethargy-with-a-vengeance choice.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 23 July 2003 15:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Neudonym, Wednesday, 23 July 2003 18:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I've just realized that I've been listening exclusively to Leonard Cohen for the past two days.

Strongo - I think it's terrific, love the portentiousness and it's got some great lines. I wonder if the whole LP's up to scratch - I decided I did like Jimmy Mathis after all.

Today it's been some more 90s hip-hop, "Don't Be Scared" repeatedly and the Black Eyed Peas album.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 25 July 2003 16:13 (twenty-two years ago)

One of my new favoritest CDs: Mr. Lif's I Phantom. I keep trying to go a whole day without listening to it, and then get "New Man Theme" stuck in my head, then have to put it in, and then end up having to listen to it again later in the evening. SO. DAMN. TIGHT.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 25 July 2003 16:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I've been listening to the final version of the mix-CD for my cousin twice this afternoon. ("final" = "completely final" as opposed to "almost final like all the other final versions")

It looks like this:

Aphex Twin : Tree
Rapoon : Jerewat
Tool : Cesaro Summability
Autechre : Foil
Coil : DOET/Hecate

"My Love is Like...Wo" is still probably the worst single of the year, but some of the songs are pretty great. It's no worse than the Beyonce album, though it doesn't have a single as great as "Crazy In Love".

Now gather 'round yo
And check it out yo
And all the bitches come and suck up all my balls yo
And take a ticket to play with it like a slicky
So put your lips on my big chocolate twinkie
And you swallow all the nut
If you bitches are smart
To make my dick pop up like a pop-chart
But after I nut I might leave you
But first I must decieve you, because bitch I don't need you
And don't say that you love me too
'Cause if I turn my back you would fuck the whole crew
You're nothin' but a stank ho' tryin' to take my bank ho'
So I have to let you know ..

Led Zeppelin II, after realizing it was my all-time most played album. I really noticed how messed-up a lot of it is.

I also listened to "Bring Me to Life", "In the End", and "Hysteria".

If you kissed the sun right out of the sky for me;
If you told me all the lies I might deserve.
If you lay all night in the rain for me, *)
Well, I couldn't love you more.
I just couldn't love you more,
I couldn't love you more.

If you loved me 'til my eyes get no more shame for you;
If you walked beside me all the long way home.
If you wasted all of your time on me,
Well, I couldn't love you more.
I just couldn't love you more,
I couldn't love you more.
I just couldn't love you more.

If you gave me all the things I'd never ask of you;
If you showed me all the ways you have to cry.
If you lay all night in the rain for me,
I couldn't love you more.
I just couldn't love you more,
Just couldn't love you more.

Right now, Spandau Ballet's greatest hits. "Musclebound" gets weirder every time I hear it.

I really need to get that first album on CD. "To Cut a Long Story Short" is amazing, too. It's like the New Romantic "53rd and 3rd".

"Sitting on a park bench
years away from fighting...
Standing in the dark
oh I was waiting for man to come
I am beautiful and clean
and so very very young
to be standing in the street
to be taken by someone...
oh look at the strange boy
he finds it hard existing
to cut a long story short
I lost my mind."

Right now, I'm listening to a mix tape that I made for my 2nd Grade class to listen to during free time. Unfortunately, they weren't all that well-behaved this week, so they didn't get to hear it. It's goes like this...

Starfish and Coffee-Prince
I Love Your Smile-Shanice
Double Dutch Bus-Frankie Smith
Clapping Song -Shirley Ellis
Make a Circuit with Me-Polecats
Hooked on a Feeling Blue-Swede
Pata Pata-Miriam Makeba

New Order - "The Peter Saville Show Soundtrack"

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 11 August 2003 18:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I listened to a classic rock station while I was out at lunch and I came to a disturbing conclusion (disturbing to y'all, not to me): I like Judas Priest more than Led Zeppelin.

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 11 August 2003 18:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Nothing wrong with that, really.

I was listening to both the Walkabouts' The Train Leaves at Eight and a homemade comp of all the songs the Walks cover on that disc. Simply wonderful.

Ween's quebec just finished spinning (mmm), and I've just stuck in Karsh Kale's Liberation to accompany this STEERONGah cup of coffee. I also listened to Lightning Bolt's Wonderful Rainbow on the way here this morning; if you can stay drousy with that album on, you're narcoleptic.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 12:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 10:33 (twenty-two years ago)

First I was listening to the stupid modern rock station, but I'd somehow forgotten they do talk radio in the mornings most of the time. So then I listened to Mei's cd mix for NA which is VERY good.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 15:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Am I the only one in the ILX community that doesn't get Lightning Bolt? Some dude in a ski mask banging on drums and his buddy making the same amount of unlistenable noise. Christ almighty.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 15:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I like Lightning Bolt for it's ridiculousness and relentlessness mostly, and cuz it sounds like I feel a lot of the time.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 16:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I ain't never heard Lightening Bolt, I get them confused with Skyclad.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 17:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Now, Ground Zero - Revolutionary Pekinese Opera. God, what a wonderful recording.

Also, Boards of Canada - Geogaddi. And a couple Styx songs. The tinkly Rhodes piano sound that opens "Babe" could sort of fit on a Boards of Canada record. I was considering trying to make an IDM track using only Styx samples.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 17:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I haven't heard Lightning Bolt either. But it sounds like I might like them.

Like I told Larcole, it's the reverse of the Beyonce album, it gets BETTER as it goes.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 14 August 2003 13:38 (twenty-two years ago)

MMJ are SOOOO GOOD in concert! (note: especially if yr h3ll4 h1gh)

Anyway I'm listening to a Beck mix CD right now with some great songs on it, like "Deadweight", "Mexico", "Arabian Nights", "MTV Makes Me Wanna Smoke Crack", "Let's Go Moon Some Cars", "Cold-Ass Fashion", "Fume", "Electric Music and The Summer People", "Halo of Gold", "Brother", "Ghost", "Dirrty", "No Money No Honey", him and Willie Nelson doing "Nails In My Coffin", him and Emmylou Harris doing "Sin City", some track with some blip-bloop beat and Justin Meldal-Johnson prank calling a plastic surgeon's office, and some solo accordion track prompted by a female voice saying "motherfucker".

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 14 August 2003 13:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually it's really great how this one transition bit is that accordion song -> a sample from Pee-Wee's Big Adventure (Pee-Wee and Francis' "I know you are but what am I?" bit) -> "Fume", possibly one of the most ridiculously fun songs ever.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 14 August 2003 13:49 (twenty-two years ago)

No Code. Pearl Jam should have started with this album and they'd be a lot more loved, I think.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 14 August 2003 14:05 (twenty-two years ago)

No Code is probably my favorite of their albums; they had very good chemistry with Jack Irons on drums, and summa those songs ("Present Tense", "Who You Are", "In My Tree" fr'instance) are some of the goose-pimpling-est songs I've ever heard.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 14 August 2003 14:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh and now the Beck is done and I've just put in Talib Kweli's Quality. Ha! I love Dave Chappell's intro to this album!

I love Afrika Bambataa's skit in the middle, he doesn't make any sense, but it's hilarious..."like something crawled up in ya ass and just died"!

Fushitsusha - Withdrawe, this sable Disclosure ere devot'd (Sometimes I thought the noise sounded bleak and fraying and desolate and fucked; sometimes I thought it was beautiful and summery.)

Deep Purple - Machine Head (Goddamn I'd forgot how great this is. I can't even put my finger on what exactly - the elegant soloing, the somehow chilly feel of stuff like "Pictures of Home", the efficient motoring, the 'hard' urgency)

I just put on Cex - Role Model

I'm listening to quebec AGAIN (Ween, if'n ya didn't know). I kinda can't get enough of it. Current track = "The Argus", which is so lovely, I kinda can't believe it's the same group that did "She Fucks Me", y'know? Their music (especially on this album) has a strange oceanic aura or something.

I'm doing my bit to further the generation gap by listening to I Love the 70s while catching up on the internet world.

Sarah, your CDs rock. Listen to the Stooges next.

Various, Fuentes Allstars III (a 1996 Discos Fuentes comp.)
Celia Cruz, Afro-Cubana
Various, Best of Salsa Masters (1998, Déclic Communications)

Hotdamn. I sooo enjooooyed this stuff.

The C'Cruz album is 'bit puzzling, however: the cover sayeth "1996/ 1998, Exworks Rec.", yet the recordings definitely sound much, much older -- early to mid-60s, I'd venture.
(The AMG's gushing review, helpfully, doesn't mention anything as regards the dates of recording)
