Come on now!
Here it is after two days growth:

I'll post a pic after each time I shave the rest of my face (usually every two days or so). This is so exciting!!!

I can grow hair everywhere on my body but my upper lip.
So I am envious.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 24 July 2003 14:19 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yes, I'll get the next one in focus (or change that one later). I wish I could get a little more handlebar action going but wtf.

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 24 July 2003 14:25 (twenty-one years ago) link

When my best friend got married two years ago, the rest of the groomsmen and I decided it would be a good idea to piss off the bride by growing mustaches. We weren't really keen on the way his future wife treated us. We all went down there with some thick staches, she shit. We shaved them off before the ceremony though.

This is the sort of thread that only Chris V. is truly capable of responding to.

Chris P (Chris P), Thursday, 24 July 2003 14:43 (twenty-one years ago) link

So are handlebars really the goal? I had this friend in elementary school whose dad had the hugest handlebar mustache I'd ever seen. And he greased it or whatever to make the rings coil around perfectly. Best of luck, Bryan!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 24 July 2003 14:44 (twenty-one years ago) link

If this works out, Bryan, you should move to the UK and join the Handlebar Club!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 24 July 2003 14:46 (twenty-one years ago) link

Chances are in two weeks when I win my bet I'll shave it off. Using moustache wax does sound like fun, though.

Stuff coming from imagedeposit.com doesn't seem to be working with the threads. It's worth right-clicking those red x's of Julia's and Chris's to get the URL so you can go directly too the pics. Chris made Bryan look like Snidely Whiplash or something.

Yeah, I more want the fu manchu look than a handlebar look, though it's good, too. Can't look anything but scary with a nice thick Dave Schultz 'stache, and maybe people will just stay away from me then (it's in their best interests to).

throughout Dec we were an ugly bunch, but I was the only one who showed up at the New Year's Party sporting lip hair (other than yo mama), and as noted, shabby lip hair at that.
I thought I was the only who believed in the dream, but I'm glad to see my eastern neighbour pick up the baton.

this has nothing to do with the mustache although good luck. do you all know each other. I've been looking at all different stuff. my friend recomended this site but I didn't realize that it was kind of exclusive. Am I intruding?

SAM WALLACE! WELCOME! You must be a very interesting person to want to introduce yourself here. I am growing the 'stache so you don't have to!

Bryan (Bryan), Friday, 25 July 2003 18:50 (twenty-one years ago) link

You've picked an odd day Sam.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 25 July 2003 18:52 (twenty-one years ago) link

NA (Nick A.), Friday, 25 July 2003 18:52 (twenty-one years ago) link

why does that make me interesting? why are you growing the stache? until menopause hits I think I'll skip the facial hair

sam wallace (punky), Friday, 25 July 2003 18:52 (twenty-one years ago) link

I guess that answers my question too (hopefully).

NA (Nick A.), Friday, 25 July 2003 18:53 (twenty-one years ago) link

sam wallace (punky), Friday, 25 July 2003 18:53 (twenty-one years ago) link

I still feel like I'm intruding. how do you all know each other? and why are you growing an "ironic mustache"?

sam wallace (punky), Friday, 25 July 2003 18:55 (twenty-one years ago) link

Most of us only know each other from ILX, though some have met in the physical realm as well. Bryan is growing an ironic mustache to hide behind (he has low self-esteem) and to look more like Mr. Peanut. Next stop - monocleland!

NA (Nick A.), Friday, 25 July 2003 18:57 (twenty-one years ago) link

well Bryan goodluck. why the low self-esteem? your pictures make you look like a good looking guy

sam wallace (punky), Friday, 25 July 2003 18:58 (twenty-one years ago) link

HA!

Bryan (Bryan), Friday, 25 July 2003 19:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Ha????? why do you say that? I'm sorry I shouldn't say stuff to make people uncomfortable. didn't mean to, just don't think that you need to hide behind a stache!

sam wallace (punky), Friday, 25 July 2003 19:02 (twenty-one years ago) link

That's a good question about my self-esteem, actually. I'll ponder it while stroking my 'stache. I say "HA!" because I'm an ugly freak.

Bryan (Bryan), Friday, 25 July 2003 19:03 (twenty-one years ago) link

It's customary 'round these parts to go out of your way to make people feel uncomfortable, there, sam.

Bryan (Bryan), Friday, 25 July 2003 19:05 (twenty-one years ago) link

have you always had low self-esteem? may I say not too many are so forthwright(sp???) about this "condition". Don't you have someone around to tell you that your not an ugly freak, or is this your thing. You put yourself down to be funny it always guarantees a laugh or do you really believeit?

sam wallace (punky), Friday, 25 July 2003 19:07 (twenty-one years ago) link

forgive me but I think it sounds like you have alot of fun on the message boards but sounds like you could use someone to talk to, someone to "pump you up" a little. I know what it is to be lonely or to feel bad about your self. Hmm....maybe I've gotten a little serious. I misslong talks guessthat is why I logged on

sam wallace (punky), Friday, 25 July 2003 19:12 (twenty-one years ago) link

Oh, lots of people say I look fine, BUT THEY'RE LYING!!! The moustache should improve things a little. Ultimately it's the Magnum PI look that I'm shooting for. WHO CAN RESIST THAT?

Bryan (Bryan), Friday, 25 July 2003 19:13 (twenty-one years ago) link

Not me!

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 25 July 2003 19:14 (twenty-one years ago) link

Not meaning anything by it e-mail me and let me know more about yourself. Just left a relationship and could use somehting to look forward to. let me know what you think.

Bryan (Bryan), Friday, 25 July 2003 19:19 (twenty-one years ago) link

Bryan does look grand. I mean, he's a big guy, but he wears it well. He doesn't look like a thin guy gone fat, which always looks terrible.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 25 July 2003 19:25 (twenty-one years ago) link

Bryan on day 15 - after he decides the 'stache is fabulous after all.

I have spent most of the day on a plane flying across the country and I look and see that most of ILE has been attacked with a major case of the Bag-Of-Rancid-Dicks but this thread, this thread did to me what romantic comedies are supposed to do, made me laugh and smile and sad and feel gooshy and have hope for the world, or at least ILE. Bravo!

I am glad that the stache still looks pathetic, though. Get a pencil, fill it in a bit!

Chris P (Chris P), Saturday, 26 July 2003 03:23 (twenty-one years ago) link

Well, here we are 5 days in and it still looks pathetic:
http://www3.mb.sympatico.ca/~bryang/72603stache.jpg

Some thoughts...
1. Nick: you're right. I am turning into Farva, except I would never turn my back on my friends, and a couple of other things are different (powdered sugar is delicious, though).
2. angie: I could never rival Roger the gay Muppet's 'stache for sheer bushiness.
3. Chris Piuma: I'm glad you're glad! It's gonna stay pathetic!

I'm happy that people were having fun with this thread. All I can say now is: Who wants a moustache ride?

Bryan (Bryan), Saturday, 26 July 2003 18:46 (twenty-one years ago) link

day 5-14 is the big hump. If you can keep not shaving that thing for two weeks you should be fine, or at least moreso than you will be for the next few days. The growth seems to stall out and you start getting annoyed, etc etc. One day at a time!

We get bored in the military and we must have tried to do this at least three separate times. I don't know anybody who succeeded personally but I'm rooting for you, B-dogg.

Millar (Millar), Saturday, 26 July 2003 18:55 (twenty-one years ago) link

It'd be cooler if it were blue like the muppet's tho...

luna (luna.c), Saturday, 26 July 2003 23:22 (twenty-one years ago) link

Use the blue pencil to fill it in.

Chris P (Chris P), Sunday, 27 July 2003 01:33 (twenty-one years ago) link

Now past a week and I guess it's probably because my face has gone kinda pale that you can see the 'stache a bit better:
http://www3.mb.sympatico.ca/~bryang/72803.jpg

It's too bad this thread has kinda cooled off. I was hoping that people would keep making fun of me. I kinda even look like this guy right now:

No. My birthday's in January, but nice try!

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 03:19 (twenty-one years ago) link

*sigh* Please get with the program, if you're going to grow a hipster ironic moustache you should learn the hipster ironic slang.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 03:19 (twenty-one years ago) link

There really is no hope for me on that front, sweetie.

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 03:21 (twenty-one years ago) link

C'mon, this is simply untrue, I seen you mosh.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 03:21 (twenty-one years ago) link

dude that thing is so money. You have to keep it.

Millar (Millar), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 03:23 (twenty-one years ago) link

If you shave it he'll break yr rib again!!!!

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 03:23 (twenty-one years ago) link

Just the motivation I need, kidz! My dad seems to be growing his (sort of against his will, sadly) so I think I might just keep going along with him.

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 03:28 (twenty-one years ago) link

I should scan in a picture of my dad, he fucking looks like the goddamned Sabotage video half the time with his huge ass moustache and Ray Ban aviators.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 12:35 (twenty-one years ago) link

Bryan, Have you ever watched Mr. Show? You could shake a crime stick with a moustache like that!

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 12:49 (twenty-one years ago) link

Oh come on, in that last picture, the moustache is clearly just drawn on in crayon.

NA (Nick A.), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 13:03 (twenty-one years ago) link

More moustache pictures!

Back to top! More Bryan 'stache!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 12:31 (twenty-one years ago) link

I am glad that Bryan is finding some solace in making himself look goofy for the amusement of a bunch of random people online. Maybe you should take this into some sort of profit-making webcam service?

Chris P (Chris P), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 15:55 (twenty-one years ago) link

Well, here it is today in all its pathetic glory:
http://www3.mb.sympatico.ca/~bryang/73003.jpg

They shaved my dad's off for him so mine'll be coming off on Monday.
I guess I'll explain a little bit why I keep mentioning my dad. He had an aneurism (and a heart attack) on Sunday morning. He was flown from Brandon to Winnipeg for surgery (which was, it seems so far, successful). The face I'm making in this latest picture has for the most part been the face I've been making the whole time, though I was told I look a little sad in the pic from Monday, which I s'pose is allowed. He breathed in some blood and/or vomit at some point and now has pneumonia, which is making recovery from the surgery a little more difficult, but he's in good hands. I wasn't going to talk about this here as I was hoping to just have something to cheer me up when I get a chance to get online, but it's just about the only thing on my mind right now so I thought I'd let you all know. Sorry if it bums anyone out - that wasn't my intention. Don't worry too much about me, but if anyone wants to they can send healing thoughts to my dad.

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 16:35 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'm so sorry, Bryan.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 16:35 (twenty-one years ago) link

Oof, that is terrible. I hope he gets better. At least he is nearby (or at least I assume this is better than if he were in Brandon still).

(Also, let's see some shots that include your entire head! Enough severe cropping! What does the stache look like at work, at home, going to drop the kids off at soccer games, etc. Let's see the stache fit in with your active lifestyle!)

Chris P (Chris P), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 16:37 (twenty-one years ago) link

Um, well, it's mostly been sitting still lately, so it's seemingly living a life of ease for now.

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 16:39 (twenty-one years ago) link

No I mean what does the stache look like when YOU do these things. Obv the stache doesn't have children of its own yet, it's only a few days old!

Chris P (Chris P), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 16:43 (twenty-one years ago) link

I've mostly been sitting around at the hospital since Sunday. If I get back to work or go to the gym or something I'll be sure to take some pics.

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 16:45 (twenty-one years ago) link

sorry to hear it bryan. the moustache is coming along nicely.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 16:46 (twenty-one years ago) link

Hugs for Bryan and his dad!

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 16:49 (twenty-one years ago) link

Good heavens, Bryan. My best thoughts for you both.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 16:54 (twenty-one years ago) link

No I mean what does the stache look like when YOU do these things
I have this strange vision now of the stache bouncing to and fro as Bryan does things at the gym, much in the style of an unrestrained bosom. This leads to the even stranger vision of a moustache brassiere. I think I need a vacation.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 19:06 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'm sorry, Bryan. Best wishes and best of luck.

Millar (Millar), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 19:16 (twenty-one years ago) link

I have a feeling that thoughts of anything resembling unrestrained bosoms wrt his face will cheer Bryan up to no end.

Kim (Kim), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 20:01 (twenty-one years ago) link

Oh my God, Bryan, I hope your father comes through ok.

And please keep on posting silliness to ILX! 'Tis the Ultimate Cheerer-Upper. :)

Just Deanna (Dee the Lurker), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 21:28 (twenty-one years ago) link

Thanks everyone for the kind words. My Dad's still a very sick man but I'm confident he'll pull through. Induced comas are a bitch, though.
Here's how the 'stache looked today:
http://www3.mb.sympatico.ca/~bryang/80103.jpg

Monday it will be GONE. It just plain doesn't suit me at all, and people look at me funny (which I am sort of used to but more for the things I do and say). I look like I just had my wisdom teeth extracted!

Bryan (Bryan), Saturday, 2 August 2003 05:45 (twenty-one years ago) link

But what does your father think of the stache?

Chris P (Chris P), Saturday, 2 August 2003 06:17 (twenty-one years ago) link

Sorry about your dad, Bryan. I think the stache would look fine as long as you were wearing a bowler hat. You'd look like a pervert, but a fine one.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 2 August 2003 16:26 (twenty-one years ago) link

Thanks Anthony. I've always kinda thought of myself as a fine pervert!

Bryan (Bryan), Sunday, 3 August 2003 03:59 (twenty-one years ago) link

best wishes bryan. also you're handsome with or without ironic hair.

teeny (teeny), Sunday, 3 August 2003 04:05 (twenty-one years ago) link

I actually think it looks pretty darn snazzy!

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Sunday, 3 August 2003 04:10 (twenty-one years ago) link

It looks freakishly bad IRL, and it has started to itch again. Monday it comes off, but it was fun to grow these past two weeks. I want to look how I feel (boyish) again.

Bryan (Bryan), Sunday, 3 August 2003 04:18 (twenty-one years ago) link

Best of wishes, man.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Sunday, 3 August 2003 09:33 (twenty-one years ago) link

I was given a pack of fake mustaches for my birthday.

SOLIDARITY!

Chris P (Chris P), Sunday, 3 August 2003 17:09 (twenty-one years ago) link

Well kids, all good things must come to an end. Here's how the 'stache looked at the end:
http://www3.mb.sympatico.ca/~bryang/80303.jpg

And here I am, freshly shaven, picture taken only a few minutes ago:
http://www3.mb.sympatico.ca/~bryang/80403.jpg

If someone had taken me up on my offer of a moustache ride, I would've considered keeping it! Thanks for playing along everyone.

Now, in case anyone is concerned, my Dad is very slowly showing some signs of improvement. The pneumonia is a nasty fucking strain and is not particularly easy to get rid of. The forced suctioning of his lungs is painful but necessary. His heart rate seems to be under control. His blood sugar is stable (he's also diabetic). They're not happy about the pressure in his head but hopefully that'll improve in the next day or so. Thanks for reading.

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 4 August 2003 17:17 (twenty-one years ago) link

The Minor Thirds salute Bryan and his moustache (long may it live in our hearts and memories) and hope his father has a speedy and not-so-painful recovery!

Jake in a mustache is one of the funniest goddamn things I've ever seen.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 4 August 2003 19:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Oh there's an even better Jake-in-moustache photo...

Chris P (Chris P), Monday, 4 August 2003 19:09 (twenty-one years ago) link

No, the 'stache isn't coming back; I just wanted to say a few things about my dad. No one has to read this, of course.
They had to remove a shunt from my dad's head which was installed to drain fluid to prevent vaso spasms ("A vaso spasm is a constricting of the blood vessels and is caused by the vessels being irritated by blood being on the outside of the vessel. This restricts the amount of blood reaching that portion of the brain and can lead to additional brain damage.") because he has a staph infection in his spinal fluid. The removal of the shunt means at least another week to two weeks of ICU time. There was a concern that he would have severe diarrhoea from the psychotically powerful antibiotic they have to give him for this new infection, but so far so good. They did a tracheotomy and installed a gastric bypass tube this week so now there aren't any tubes in his mouth, which seems to have cheered him up. His heart is improving; bpm around 75 today (was well over 100 bpm up until a couple of days ago). Blood pressure and blood sugar stabilized. The pneumonia seems to be almost beat, the fever just about gone. It appears that he's going to survive thought the doctors and nurses are still unwilling to say so explicitly. Thanks for saying nice things to me, kids, and for the chats.

Bryan (Bryan), Sunday, 10 August 2003 20:40 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yeah, this was a fun thread for me at one of the shittiest times of my life. I actually haven't shaved in 8 days but not out of any desire for producing irony; I've just been lazy. I thought of this thread more as a way to talk about my dad than anything else. He's so-so btw, having some troubles with hydrocephalus which may require a second shunt but after the first one went so smoothly we're not too worried. I'd still like to know who that person was who was hitting on me!
