What do you say when you quit your job?

So I am quitting my job in about three weeks. But I am nervous. The last job I quit they already knew I was going to leave for about 6 months before I actually left, but here, I dunno, I've only been here 6 months and I don't know what to say!

So what kind of kind, vague words should I write in my resignation letter?

Mandee, Friday, 25 July 2003 19:34 (twenty-two years ago)

use the word "Lawsuit" a lot.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 25 July 2003 19:37 (twenty-two years ago)

"In the words of Michel Foucault..."

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 25 July 2003 19:37 (twenty-two years ago)

"I'll miss you most of all, Herbert Kornfeld"

oops (Oops), Friday, 25 July 2003 19:38 (twenty-two years ago)

"talk to the hand"

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 25 July 2003 19:38 (twenty-two years ago)

A friend of mine quit his job at Kinko's by getting on top of a copier and delivering a long list of his grievances to everyone in the store. Worked beautifully, but maybe not for you.

Octothorpe (Octothorpe), Friday, 25 July 2003 19:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Praise your immediate supervisor, and criticize upper management.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 25 July 2003 19:39 (twenty-two years ago)

talk about "shortsighted projections," "loss prevention" and "jizz in the coffee maker."

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 25 July 2003 19:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm sorry.
I'm in a foul mood today regarding job and reality-based thinking.
Best of luck and I wish I could quit my job, so I'm envious.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 25 July 2003 19:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Seriously, Mandee, you just write something to the effect of you have unfortunately come to the point where you need to end your employment effective (date) and that you appreciate the great learning experience and growth opportunity they presented to you.

Or alternately you write "NIGGA PLEASE" in 72 pt type, Comic Sans.

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 25 July 2003 19:41 (twenty-two years ago)

comic sans is so OTM!!
i fantasize at least thrice weekly about my exit interview.

praying mantis (praying mantis), Friday, 25 July 2003 19:48 (twenty-two years ago)

i've quit my job twice. most recently it was because there was a guy in the office who was bullying me, saying things like "you don't want to get on my bad side" and reporting illicit surfing activities to my superiors... ugh. i took HIS boss aside to air my grievances, and was assured that no one but the Bully had any problem with any illicit futureweb activities because i always got my work done and that's what mattered. but i still wanted out because i had to work with the Bully day-in-day-out. Bully's boss said he was sorry to see me go but he understood my feelings. i think honesty works, by and large, and it's certainly easier and less stressful than coming up with some thing you don't really mean.

the first time i quit my job it was because a girl i was seeing at the office dumped me. because, she said, it was too weird to work together and date each other at the same time - so she immediately started seeing the design director. i immediately went mad. in difft economic times i might have stayed on but i had an embarrassment of other opportunities so i actually wrote my resignation letter AS A WEB PAGE, including a .gif of my signature, and left a note with the URL on the design director's desk! haha what a twunt!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 25 July 2003 19:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I put my resignation in yesterday, and all went well. Short and sweet is all it takes.Mine went something like this:
Date
To whomever
As per the above date I here by give notice of my resignation as specified in the Employment Guidelines. My last day will be (Fill in date). Thank you for the opportunity to be part of your organization.
Sincerly Me

But if I had a photo copier and a audience to rant to I might have chose that route too. Good luck.

danielle g. (danielle g.), Friday, 25 July 2003 19:52 (twenty-two years ago)

NIGGA PLEASE FUCK YO JOB I DON'T WANT IT NO MORE.

SINCERELY,

Texas Sam (thatgirl), Friday, 25 July 2003 19:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm planning on just not showing up anymore. And also setting fire to the building I live in, since they own it.

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 25 July 2003 19:58 (twenty-two years ago)

That'll show 'em!

oops (Oops), Friday, 25 July 2003 19:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I've never actually quit a job.

Once I got "taken off the schedule" pending a discussion with the general manager over some comps and voids that none of the managers remembered making (I never showed back up for that tearful reunion).

Every other time, I've found another job and just quit showing up.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Friday, 25 July 2003 20:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha one time, the transformer blew up in one of our buildings (the luxury next door to where I live) and they swore up and down that I did it to put revenge upon them for firing my best friend. WTF? I don't even know how to blow up a transformer, though trust me if I did, you'd all be in trouble.

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 25 July 2003 20:01 (twenty-two years ago)

One job that I really truly hated I resigned via a formal letter on the meglomaniac, abusive bosses desk. We did not discuss it in person.

Others I've usually been comfortable just to sit down with the boss and tell them verbally (usually there have been good reasons like moving, better job etc, and they are understanding.)

Once I was just fed up with my life, left at lunch break and never returned or called or nothing. With the exception of that one, obv., all instances inolved usually about a mth's notice but never less than 2 weeks.

Texas Sam (thatgirl), Friday, 25 July 2003 20:04 (twenty-two years ago)

It's the joy of menial labor - waiting tables, barbacking, painting/construction. You can always find a job, no one checks references (I'm still claiming 'corporate trainer' status at the restaurant with those mysterious computer-error voids), and it's acceptable to just not show up anymore.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Friday, 25 July 2003 20:05 (twenty-two years ago)

The one time I had to quit a job, I did it verbally and totally regretted it because for some reason I burst into tears. Thank goodness the HR person was nice...I had JUST been promoted so I felt bad about quitting. So I say write something like what Ally said.

teeny (teeny), Friday, 25 July 2003 20:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I forgot, I pulled that last move too, many years ago, at a liquor store in Glasgow (city centre Odd Bins). I just went out for a fish supper and never came back. Two weeks later the CID (police) were at my door because apparently $200 had gone missing from the till that day. heheh OOPS. They grilled me but I did a puppy-dog face and said the owner had been mean to me and they were convinced. I later realized that subconsciously I'd quit much earlier: that week I'd neglected to put down any of the case discounts we gave to customers who order in quantity, so that it seemed like $200 was missing. Anyway, it was a bad move in retrospect cause I never got my last paycheck.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 25 July 2003 20:12 (twenty-two years ago)

teeny (teeny), Friday, 25 July 2003 20:19 (twenty-two years ago)

See, I work in a really small office so I think it'd be odd if I just wrote a letter and never said anything... but that's the part I am dreading, TELLING my boss I am quitting, because I can already hear her squealing in surprise, "Nooooooo!!" (I got a hint of what this is like because when I called in sick yesterday she made a similar noise)

Mandee, Friday, 25 July 2003 20:28 (twenty-two years ago)

write

DEAR METROPOLITAN BAKERY*,

I QUIT.

LOVE, JESS

in two foot high letters on the wall in black paint marker

*your employers name here

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 25 July 2003 21:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey Mandee, hm, if that is the way your boss behaves just be well prepared about what you are going to say. DON'T let on that you have been dreading it etc.
What I am saying is, don't let yourself start apologizing up and down for quitting or feel obliged to give in-depth detail on your feelings about it or your reasons. Decide on your simple, clear explanation beforehand and stick to your story, & if she's all "Nooo! we'll miss you!" and guilt-tripping and such, just respond by turning it into positive stuff by saying a polite "thank you" and how much you appreciated the opportunity & gained from it. Platitudes about moving on, taking a different path, etc. will also be suitable.
I mean, if your boss whines and complains or gets all emotional, don't respond the same way & don't fall in the trap of saying "I'm sorry I had to leave BUT.. (complaint complaint)" - you want to leave a good last impression, that you're quitting to go somewhere else w/your career, not b/c you were unhappy there.

And if you don't have a positive career change/opportunity to look forward to, well, making one up won't hurt. :) I dreaded leaving my last job and then I wrote a resignation letter, but decided it was best to tell my boss face-to-face - I think writing the letter first helped me figure out what to say. good luck!

After much thought, it is with regret that I now tender my resignation. I have enjoyed working with you all these last several years, and I appreciate the opportunities you have given me. I have learned so much during my tenure here at G_& S_, and I thank you all for your patience, kindness and support. I will miss you all, and wish the company continued success.

Very truly yours,

P.S. Now that I have my last reference letter in hand, I must tell you that the preceding letter is a bag of lies - I loathe each and every one of you equally, I hope this shitbag company continues on it's downward spiral and ends up as it was meant to be: nothing more than a flaming bag of dog crap on the doorstep of life. You are all cordially invited to go fuck your hats, you elitist, scum-sucking, shit-eating, motherfucking cocksuckers.

I've also done the "just walk out and not return" routine. I figured that if a couple of other people had quit the same way before me, I was OK.

And it was. They never called me to see if I was alive.

Matt (Matt), Saturday, 26 July 2003 00:42 (twenty-two years ago)

That's brilliant Matt; can you remember any of it?

teeny (teeny), Saturday, 26 July 2003 01:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Um, only the last couple of lines "so it only remains for me to wish you all the best for you and your business, but of course I'm lying because I fervently hope that you'll all go down in flames"

I really hated that job.

Matt (Matt), Saturday, 26 July 2003 01:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I told everyone I was going back to university about 6 months before I left. So, just break the news gradually, they'd probably appreciate it if you told them sooner rather than later, so that they can go about hiring somewhere else. Please note, I have only ever worked in the public sector where everything is by the book, one month notice, handing in your door pass etc etc.

five months pass...
How long is the average period of notice in the US once you have quit? Presumably you need to put it in writing?

...I have a "friend" who may well be quitting his current job to take up another post, but this is actually the first time he has quit a job with another actually lined up. How is the best way for him to manage this? At what point does he hand in his notice at his current job? Does he need to sign something with his prospective employers first?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 23 January 2004 17:48 (twenty-two years ago)

two weeks is pretty standard.

kephm, Tuesday, 25 May 2004 16:28 (twenty-two years ago)

my god, I hope to be writing mine in a weeks time. i think the best approach is just to be short and concise. But I will have to tell my boss face to face and they require it in writing also.

Chris 'The Velvet Bingo' V (Chris V), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 16:33 (twenty-two years ago)

haha kephm that's some of the plan! I'm going to try to take a month off and then really start looking for work (in my biz most of the hiring happens in september and march so taking august off isn't totally suicidal). Good luck Chris, my letter was very short. If you have to do them both, write the letter first, hand it to your boss and say 'this is my notice, I'm leaving on X day' and then when they look down at the letter, run away.

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 16:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Im pretty sure my boss will give me a hard time about it. He has in the past. When i tried to post out of here to go to a different dept he was such an asshat that i decided to stay. But this time it will be out of the company. Funny, I have my annual review in 5 minutes.

Chris 'The Velvet Bingo' V (Chris V), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 16:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, WTF is up with that? The bosses are always mad when you quit, even when you give ample notice. I heard there's a guy who worked here over 15 years, fresh out of high school, and he gave a FOUR MONTH notice. After he left, the higher ups said it was a bad parting. Why? Because he left in general.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 17:46 (twenty-two years ago)

you say, "see ya, BIIIIAAATCCCHES!"

at least that's how i'm quitting.

Ask For Samantha (thatgirl), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 19:03 (twenty-two years ago)

This is what I said:

I hereby resign my position as senior producer at K*** effective June 26, 2007.

I have enjoyed every opportunity that [my company] has offered to me over the past eleven years. It has been, and always will be, a very valuable experience for me. The people I worked with weren't just fellow co-workers, but friends. It has been my pleasure to work with the team that [the company president] has assembled to facilitate the success for both radio stations. I look forward to hearing about more successes related to this company in the future.

I will be happy to assist in any way during this final transition period.

In other words, I QUIT MY MOTHERFUCKING JOB TODAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have never been between jobs (as I have only had one job).
