This is the thread where you write the post everyone would expect you to write

So for the past week or so (if not longer) I've been noticing a lot of interchangeability to everyone's posts. Pretty much no matter what the thread is about, the answers fall within a certain pattern of predicability - the result being that you know what folks are going to say before you even get to their posts.

For example I post all the time on the food, drone rock, and Macintosh threads with pretty much the same type/content of posts. Other folks post about their hatred or love of NYC or LA, etc. Still other folks post about their unconditional love for Loveless, etc.

Not making a value judgment here, just noticing things. Anyway, this is the thread where you write the most most generic post that everyone would expect you to write.

So last night I went out intending to tie my shoelace and come home, when I met this guy I know who owed me money, I bought a pint and they were all going to some party on the beach but we decided to go back to mine. Anyway after a while we were all completely fucked, I put on the jacques lu cont remix of something and I swear I saw through time. God I feel awful now though.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 9 August 2003 11:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I am currently WHINGING on about some stereotype or whatnot that I DESPERATELY want to prove wrong. I am also going on about how much I actually really like San Antonio, in an effort to gain understanding as to why I would actually want to stay here, as well as posting fiery, opinion-filled beliefs of What I Hold To Be True, afterwards purposely avoiding the responses because I just KNOW I messed up again and didn't temper my words. Other things I'm posting include my moments of self-hatred and self-doubt, little silly bits of nonsense, and things that maybe perhaps reveal a bit too much about myself... ?

Excellent thread idea, Chris hon.

This == the right time to combine self-loathing, deep-rooted insecurity, fatalism, and a religious escape route.

Doesn't this thread assume that everyone is a little too predictable? I think this thread might benefit from counseling.

I'm posting this naked, and I'm imagining that you're all the same way.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 9 August 2003 13:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Unsurprisingly I have read and reread with no large uninterest what the Nipper has to say here. As ever, his ability to spin an inspiring line into the waters of imagination commands shoals of respect. Yet still there are some things about his post that I cannot understand, or cannot agree with. Curiously enough I think (old themes here) that he *underrates* Morley's spatial sense - let me raise a flaccid arm one more time and point to pp.130-1 of Nothing, whose italics always take me such pains to stick on the screen. I have yet, or am yet, to give up on the notion that this brand of localism is something that British writing, or anyone else's, should not try too hard to be without.

Cozen: I admire once again the phrasing, can't buy the whole of the sentiment. Allow me to say that I wish you would sort out your way with punctuation, which skates on thin ice over the gradually freezing back of my neck.

The Doc is OTM.

I agree with Tom E about some of the usual things, and disagree with him, or don't share his emotional locale, about some of the others. Possibly this is unavoidable.

"Like Glue" is great. But it aint as good as "Punkie." Why can't people talk more about dancehall, anti-capitalism, how great Montreal is, Jamaica, and dancehall?
(Don't answer my question--that's normally how it works...unless you're Dave Stelfox, and then you'll need to mention how necessary the Ward 21 album is)

cybele (cybele), Saturday, 9 August 2003 14:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Fucking hell... I mean, do we really need to listen to this record again, or can we just go round to the cunt's house and set fire to his parents? I mean... really.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 9 August 2003 14:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, there's a few good examples of this sort of thing. I'm going to go the obvious route and say that Beck ca. '93-'94 was probably the best at it. Which reminds me: how fucking awesome would a bitter-as-hell Mellow Gold-style-lyrics Beck sound produced by El-P? Answer: as awesome as Ultimo Dragon driving a Maserati Ghibli with Maggot Brain on the tape deck.

You'd be trying to wash out your memory with soap if you saw what I actually look like naked. That's probably why guys pointedly ignore me, and therefore I will probably never again have another boyfriend.

And I actually liked the place where I interviewed for a job last week, but of course nobody there called me back. But at least I do have a job interview tomorrow -- wish me luck!

This is the best thread ever! I'd add something to it, but I don't think I have a distinctive voice. I mean I say things all the time but I think that the stuff I say is entirely unrepresentative of me as me. More later, can't think now.

Ally (mlescaut), Saturday, 9 August 2003 18:55 (twenty-two years ago)

only when he's in the same picture with burl ives.

Tad (llamasfur), Saturday, 9 August 2003 18:56 (twenty-two years ago)

So are you theorizing it's really Burl Ives who is hot and his hotness radiates to all and sundry in picture with him?

Ally (mlescaut), Saturday, 9 August 2003 18:57 (twenty-two years ago)

no, it's that spencer looks hot in comparison to burl ives. shit, i probably would look hot in comparison to burl ives!

My car is wrecked! You go girl! Oh, I'm sad again. Hey sug, I'm here for you. BEST DAY EVER! Tamara and I.... Oh wait, I'm going surfing. Let me tell you about my underwear. I like sex toys. Ally (mlescaut), Saturday, 9 August 2003 19:01 (twenty-two years ago)

i guess spencer looks hot in non-burl pix too. but he looks real hot when compared to burl. which, i guess, buttresses yer point upthread.

(why did i just call another male ILXor "hot"?)

haha the bit where husserl talks about facticity is actually abt ALIENS!!

mark s, you can't just make claims like this without providing some sort of explanation. This is the sort of thing that makes me think people who are into phenomenology are intellectually shady. I admit that I haven't read Husserl though. I'm actually very interested in reading this sort of material, but due to various personal contingencies it just hasn't come to pass.

(I realize I am a marginal ILX poster--and that's basically the way I like it--but I thought I could still make a small contribution here, especially since I have a sense of humor this afternoon.)

Actually I think [insert name] is quite nice. I got a brilliant vintage hat in Camden Market yesterday (though my mate Lucas did ask if I was ever going to wear anything contemporary ever again), but then I walked into a lampost and somehow took the wrong bus after and eneded up in Tufnel Park. I blame the hangover really (well sort of, damn those cosmopolitans).

(there is nothing wrong with Tufnel Park, I just wanted Highbury)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 11 August 2003 16:52 (twenty-two years ago)

When I write a book it's gonna be all about all the shit that went down at Hampshire, like this one time we were just sitting there right and then we were like, fuck drinking the entire bottle of vodka, let's bust some shit, yo. Then we go over to the recycling shed and set it on fire then ran over to the "art garden" and broke all that shit. But someone was like coming so we had to run away? And ran right into the cops who were putting out the shed fire. Haha obv. this is going to be all fake names but it's all true.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 11 August 2003 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I have probably asked you before, Ally, but when (like, what year(s)) was your Hampshire contact, anyway?

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 11 August 2003 16:59 (twenty-two years ago)

2001-2002, I think?? Hazy time period for me.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 11 August 2003 17:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Waaay after my time. I think I knew that. You would not know the legendry of Dakin G-1, then :)

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 11 August 2003 17:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Dakin G-1 = world-conquering mecha-phallus?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 11 August 2003 18:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm fairly sure that if you even say "world-conquering mecha-phallus" on the Hampshire campus, eco-friendly lasers will pop out of free-range evergreens and castrate you.

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 11 August 2003 18:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Except in a paper title, like "World-Conquering Mecha-Phallus: Patriarchalism and the Gendered Robot in The Transformers," or "World-Conquering Mecha-Phallus: Queering the Music of Steely Dan Through Modern Dance."

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 11 August 2003 18:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah that's the name of my book!!! The transformers one, I mean.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 11 August 2003 18:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I now desperately want to go to Hampshire College and pass out Hug A Secret Serviceman! flyers. (A friend from high school actually did this at Carleton when students protested the FBI coming to campus to recruit.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 11 August 2003 18:49 (twenty-two years ago)

At this point, things might've swung enough that that would be rebellious and hip! Probably not, though. They were in the news not that long ago, something about 9/11 or Bush sucking or ... God only knows.

You know those "Little. Yellow. Different. Better" ads for Nuprin, back whenever? The LBGA or one of its associate organizations did a little stand-up-and-advertise thing in the cafeteria one day, in which one chick stood up and the other chick pointed at her and said, "Little. Lithuanian. Lesbian. Better," and then talked about the LBGA and how it was multi-ethnic and etc.

They were protested by another gay-and-lesbian student organization because referencing an ad with "Yellow" in the tagline, while pointing at a person, implied an ethic slur.

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 11 August 2003 18:55 (twenty-two years ago)

... even as I type it, that makes no sense, but I promise I'm not the source of the lack of sense.

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 11 August 2003 18:56 (twenty-two years ago)

"Better."?????????????? People let them get away with that?

If I stood up and said, "I'm better than you because I'm black, I'm handsome, and I'm smarter than you," I'd get lynched.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 11 August 2003 18:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I think they got away with that bit cause it was from the Nuprin ad, though. Who knows. (Although it's still an odd choice since the point of the Nuprin ad WAS the "better" part.) You're overlooking the ludicrousness of the protest!

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 11 August 2003 19:03 (twenty-two years ago)

No, I'm lodging a sensible protest in place of the ridiculously stupid brean-dead one that actually happened.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 11 August 2003 19:05 (twenty-two years ago)

(Reading that appears to have hurt my own brean so that I can no lunger spel.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 11 August 2003 19:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, okay. Yeah, in a way that's even more representative of Hampshire, missing the obvious wrong in favor of the hip one.

"We're protesting the war on Iraq!"

"Okay, yeah, I'm not too crazy about foreign policy right now --"

"The camouflage face paint the Marines use is tested on animals!"

"... what?"

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 11 August 2003 19:07 (twenty-two years ago)

(The best Halloween costume I saw in college was worn by an Asian couple who dressed in all black and put a big yellow dot on their chests. When asked what they were dressed as, their hint was "Little. Yellow. Different.")

That restaurant is indeed very good, but I was having trouble really getting into it because the food reminded me so much of a restaurant in this obscure town which specializes in the northwestern regional style of that cuisine. This place has your basic dishes, but with elements of it's neighboring country so the spicing is unusually strong and the dishes have more fruit and things like pumpkin in it.

Damn, I haven't been there in awhile. I should drop in on my way back from my Nova Scotia road trip.

Perhaps the growth in both production values and aesthetic conservatism in Canadian electroacoustic music in the early 80s can be considered in terms of contemporary developments in popular music - increased critical dismissal of prog/AOR/fusion/pomp as bloated and affectively empty while seekng the old countercultural values in more fashionably 'authentic' folk forms and fashionably 'inauthentically' 'authentic' new wave pop forms, with the critically approved face of pop becoming favoured over actual radio content ('rockism' working against, like, rock as usual). Journey's "Separate Ways" and Barry Truax's "Riverrun" can both be considered in this regard. More concise than I dunno "Arras" or "Heart of the Sunrise" or something but with fruity-ass synths all over the place, you know?;) A tasty orchard in these cases maybe.

At least that's how it seems to me sometimes. Maybe i'm thinking too much about this?
