About the best I can come up with is that he's not as bad as Saddam Hussein.

Freedom Dupont, Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:06 (twenty-two years ago)

he'll be on permanent vacation starting January 2005.

Tad (llamasfur), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:08 (twenty-two years ago)

hmmm, well, I guess he has fantastic eyebrows.

hstencil, Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Say something nice about George W. Bush (Unanswered, posted at 6:06 pm, unread)

Mark C (Mark C), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:08 (twenty-two years ago)

You cross-posters spoilt my hilarious joke.

Mark C (Mark C), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:09 (twenty-two years ago)

his hair usually looks combed

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:09 (twenty-two years ago)

he's done the impossible ... he's organized the Democrats and anyone even vaguely left-of-center in their shared hatred of him like no-one else has done in my lifetime (see will rodgers, "i don't belong to an organized political party, i am a Democrat!")

Tad (llamasfur), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't you think Will Rogers meant "organizized"?

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:11 (twenty-two years ago)

He has a scotty dog!

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:11 (twenty-two years ago)

he's forever discredited the notion that anyone who's attended an Ivy League college = by definition smart.

Tad (llamasfur), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:11 (twenty-two years ago)

he wears matching shoes

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:12 (twenty-two years ago)

His daughters seem like they'd be cool to hang out with.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:14 (twenty-two years ago)

ditto what Ally said. Jenna Bush is kinda cute. though she has Bush Family cooties.

Tad (llamasfur), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:16 (twenty-two years ago)

He's kind of better than having a rabbit as president. But not as good as if Air Bud was president.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Air Bud would totally have caught Osama by now, I agree.

hstencil, Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

strategery

Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:20 (twenty-two years ago)

misunderestimated

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:21 (twenty-two years ago)

(ie his hilarious contributions to the lexicon)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:21 (twenty-two years ago)

he says really stupid things that are (unintentionally) very funny. (XPOST with nickalicious)

also, one's opinion of him = best gauge on whether or not someone is cool, intelligent, and worth knowing. (i.e., anyone who really likes him and his record = someone NOT worth a second of my time.)

Tad (llamasfur), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:23 (twenty-two years ago)

he often looks like a monkey, i like monkeys.

Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:25 (twenty-two years ago)

and for the record, i think that having a rabbit for president would be pretty darned cool. i'd vote for a rabbit, even over Clinton or FDR!

Tad (llamasfur), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:25 (twenty-two years ago)

He's more Texan than his daddy.

Texas Sam (thatgirl), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, he seems pretty much less silly than Dan Quayle in many respects. Though I'm not 100% sure about that, after that whole running around in a military costume thing. Theoretically I'm all for that but seriously, that was not hot at all.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:26 (twenty-two years ago)

is that a good thing, Sam?

(I think he's just as faux Texan as his dad, if not more so.)

hstencil, Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:27 (twenty-two years ago)

nah, he's real Texan.

Texas Sam (thatgirl), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:28 (twenty-two years ago)

so was LBJ. and LBJ was infinitely more cool than GW!

Tad (llamasfur), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:30 (twenty-two years ago)

i quite like his accent, the drunken goon

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:30 (twenty-two years ago)

He's not a real Texan, he was born in Connecticut! Hell I'm more real Texan than him and I haven't lived there since 1979.

hstencil, Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:30 (twenty-two years ago)

He shares his initials with the George Washington Bridge.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:31 (twenty-two years ago)

it's not a matter of birth. I'm Texan through and through and I say he's real, so there you go.

Of course LBJ's cooler! But this thread was 'say something nice about. ." not "compare to . ." and that's the best I could think of.

geez.

Texas Sam (thatgirl), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:32 (twenty-two years ago)

No, and you can't make me.

(Though he does share a birthday with some pretty incredible people... i.e., teeny and me).

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, what is up with everyone being assholes on the "Say something nice..." threads all of a sudden? It's not "Discuss yr opinion of such-and-such" it's "SAY SOMETHING NICE". Now stop being assholes and play nice.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:33 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm still trying to wrap my head around the idea of a rabbit becoming president.

Tad (llamasfur), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:35 (twenty-two years ago)

since when is disagreeing the same as being an asshole?

Oh okay, lemme think of another thing: at least his daughters aren't Xanax abusers!

hstencil, Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:35 (twenty-two years ago)

That's the spirit.

Texas Sam (thatgirl), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Taft...Eisenhower...Roosevelt...Nixon...Flopsy...

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:36 (twenty-two years ago)

When the thread is about SAY SOMETHING NICE ABOUT... and you come on simply to diss on the subject, you're being an asshole. Sorry to inform you! Kisses in advance!

I don't think a rabbit could become president, I mean who heard of a 35 year old rabbit? But I think that instead we should probably maybe make a turtle president, they get pretty old.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Jeb would probably be even worse.

Tad (llamasfur), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Bugs Bunny is pretty old, at least in his 70s by this point!

Tad (llamasfur), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh good point!!!!

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't dis, I just said I don't think he's a real Texan. Sam and I are free to disagree, no big deal.

Also, I did pay his eyebrows a compliment.

hstencil, Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Raphael for President!

(he's the leader of the group, transformed from the norm by the nuclear goop)

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:38 (twenty-two years ago)

one day, he will die.

amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I think being more Texan than you Stence my verdict on the subject stands. ;)

Texas Sam (thatgirl), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:45 (twenty-two years ago)

He's from Texas, he's a rabbit, AND he never ceases to amaze me.

Ann Sterzinger (Ann Sterzinger), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

the jackalope?!?

Texas Sam (thatgirl), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:47 (twenty-two years ago)

He has not been convicted of rape.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Jeb would probably be even worse.

Jeb WILL probably be even worse.

I mean, we'll get a one-(or poss two-)term Democrat and then another Bush. That's just the way the world works NOW. (And by WE I mean the world, cuz, that's what it says on GWB's jammies "President of the World")

something nice: He doesn't seem to be a drunken cokehead anymore.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:48 (twenty-two years ago)

he's worse: a moralizing teetotaler.

amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

i guess Dubya is better than Jeb, because TX is great while FL has no redeeming value that i've ever been able to determine.

Tad (llamasfur), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

unlike his dad he doesn't refer to his part-Latino nephews as "the Browns."

amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

He seems pretty fit for his age.

o. nate (onate), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:54 (twenty-two years ago)

or maybe he does call them "the Browns." i'm loathe to find anything nice to say about this man. he seems quite up to the task of being my bete noire.

amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:54 (twenty-two years ago)

It's hard to confuse him with a moose.

Layna Andersen (Layna Andersen), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

alright, and G*d will strike me dead for saying so, but one good thing about Dubya -- i don't think that he's a bigot. he seems to genuinely like latinos and black people. which puts him heads-and-shoulders above MANY people in his political party (like Trent Lott).

Tad (llamasfur), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I've never seen him eat human flesh.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah he likes "Latinos" and "black people" but does he like Latinos and black people?

amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Horace, you say that like eating human flesh is a bad thing???

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

just doing it in public

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:57 (twenty-two years ago)

it's bad manners

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Especially if you leave the skin all in the gutter.

Thy Lethal Zen Ned (Ned), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:57 (twenty-two years ago)

He'll die one day, and isn't that a nice thought?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:58 (twenty-two years ago)

every now and then his press conferences do not devolve into gay-baiting and/or expressions of bloodlust.

amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:58 (twenty-two years ago)

mmmm, buffet...
http://www.redheadedleague.com/hot/bush/n_children.gif

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I wonder if he can dance the old soft shoe?

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

that is, on the rare occasion when he holds a press conference, you mean.

hstencil, Tuesday, 19 August 2003 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

yes.

amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 17:01 (twenty-two years ago)

He's not afraid to wear a suit.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 17:03 (twenty-two years ago)

if you hate press conferences, then you could say that him hardly holding any is a good thing.

hstencil, Tuesday, 19 August 2003 17:04 (twenty-two years ago)

He's never bombed Canada, nor has he openly declared intentions of doing so.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 17:06 (twenty-two years ago)

he likes to 'smoke out' evil terrorists

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

he seems an affable fellow, and either chose(or was coerced to put) Colin Powell for a position of power(whom he promptly ignored from then on out).

he speaks spanish(kinda).

Kingfish (Kingfish), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

His administration keeps me glued to the television. Granted, it's usually in horror, amazed at the seemingly inhuman amounts of hubris and disdain for decency, but still. Riveting.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

He's slicker than baby snot.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 17:10 (twenty-two years ago)

No, that was Clinton.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

he likes to 'smoke out' evil terrorists

Though still not especially good at it, apparently.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex! Be NICE!

For example, it's better than having an osprey as president!

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 17:15 (twenty-two years ago)

his wife is slightly less annoying than tipper gore

Bob Shaw (Bob Shaw), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 17:19 (twenty-two years ago)

His wife started the Texas Book Festival! She's actually a pretty cool lady.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 17:29 (twenty-two years ago)

his wife is slightly less annoying than tipper gore

but laura bush never played drums with frank zappa's widow and kids!

Tad (llamasfur), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 17:31 (twenty-two years ago)

and dubya's probably nicer than his mother. barbara bush is a worthless aristo-bitch.

Tad (llamasfur), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 17:32 (twenty-two years ago)

he often looks like a monkey, i like monkeys.

for C-dawg

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 17:51 (twenty-two years ago)

(aw fuckitty fuck that site is down!)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 17:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Reactions to his administration are a good litmus test for separating the pragmatic lefties from the total wingnuts.

He is probably not as big of an idiot as most of the people who proudly announce that they think he is one.

daria g (daria g), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 18:03 (twenty-two years ago)

if he's not an idiot (which he's not, except by the standards of clinton et al) he's plenty of other things: mendacious, cruel, narrowminded, anti-intellectual, remorseless, tactless, a poor public speaker, disloyal, overbearing, insecure...

amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 18:05 (twenty-two years ago)

his faux-saddened eyes when he does his old "war on terror" schtick remind me of my dog's when he wants my mars bar but he knows i want give it to him unless he looks really desperate (despite the fact he eats and eats all day!)

Bob Shaw (Bob Shaw), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 18:09 (twenty-two years ago)

He was smart enough to surround himself with people smarter then himself.

bnw (bnw), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 18:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't understand "anti-intellectualism," I really don't. Why do people (hello, Midwest!) champion Dubya for being so "folksy"/"downhome"/"good ol' boy"/"one of us" so much? I don't know `bout you folks, but I think the President of the United States -- i.e. the most powerful man in the "free world" -- fuckin' SHOULD be the bestest and brightest individual we can elect!!! `Tain't nothin' wrong with bein' smart, especially when you have access to 'the button'. Let's get another "book-lover" in the White House next time, eh?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 18:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Or maybe a doctor? ;-)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 18:57 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't think that dubya is stupid. he has proven that he is a shrewd politician, and (in agreement with bnw) he is smart enough to hire people smarter than him.

i do think that he's ignorant, which is a worse thing than being stupid (particularly if yer not stupid to start with).

Tad (llamasfur), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 18:57 (twenty-two years ago)

He was smart enough to surround himself with people smarter then himself.
you make it sound like that was a hard thing to do. all he'd have to do is go to a pet store to acomplish that, really.

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 18:58 (twenty-two years ago)

people/critters—whatever

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 18:59 (twenty-two years ago)

If Bush is deliberately playing stupid, he is the worst type of smart person imaginable and should be shunned.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 19:00 (twenty-two years ago)

he totally could have done that WWII-style interment camp thing for Arabs after 9/11 but he didn't. At least not to ALL Arabs.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 19:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I wonder all the time if all those made-up words (the "strategery" and whatnot) were written out for him specifically by the speech-writer or if it's him just fucking things up. That's why I say he's slippery; cuz we have no idea what kind of person he truly is.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 19:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Mixing up your words does not mean you're stupid.

Texas Sam (thatgirl), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 19:17 (twenty-two years ago)

he definitely has a limited intelligence, or a limited interest in flexing it. perhaps much of it has simply atrophied from disuse. it's evident in his speeches, where he clips his phrases in such a small gallery of ways, sometimes leading to inadvertently hilarious (or just macabre) misplaced emphases. sometimes he seems to be following one of his standard modes of speechifying when the text won't quite submit; that's often when he comes up at a loss and either garbles his words or throws the text aside for some half-remembered aphorism that is only barely germane to the subject at hand.

i supposed some of his problems with speechmaking should elicit sympathy, like the one guy in Public Speaking class who just can't quite cut it. but this all begs the question of what use was this man to people in his party? they must have seen early on that he lacked many of the basic requirements of public life. But enough people must have seen in Bush's simpleminded determination and eager self-delusion a perfect vehicle for pushing through policies and ideas that had once been marginal.

amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 19:17 (twenty-two years ago)

and still are

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 19:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Mixing up your words does not mean you're stupid.

True. Saying painfully stupid things all of the time is much more of an indicator.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 19:19 (twenty-two years ago)

i guess i'm resisting imaginging BUsh as Auteur, even a self-styled hayseed Auteur like Huey Long.

amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 19:19 (twenty-two years ago)

obNiceThing: Once in a while he will criticize Israel for something. Then his handlers immediatly put a stop to that and by the next day he is back to Israel-can-do-no-wrong. Can't have Dubya thinking for himself there.

fletrejet, Tuesday, 19 August 2003 19:20 (twenty-two years ago)

would that his criticism of israel were backed up with an actual threat to withdraw even part of the huge amount of money we grant that country every year.

amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 19:23 (twenty-two years ago)

alex in NYC, are you from NYC originally?

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 19:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I should've clarified that I think misspeech is often just sloppiness or lack of training.

Texas Sam (thatgirl), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 19:32 (twenty-two years ago)

He doesn't often swoop down and abscond with small mammals in his claws to feed to his young.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 19:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I've had some interesting dreams about him.

rosemary (rosemary), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 19:37 (twenty-two years ago)

do tell!

when i dream of him i usually wake up angry and proceed to pound my fist onto my nightstand.

amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 19:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 19:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Ok, I have just about had it.

All of you who are wishing this man dead are truly twisted and sick and need to have your heads examined. I'm sorry if you don't like his politics, but I do believe that deep inside he is a decent man and decent men do not need to be wished dead. Excuse me for being a little touchy on this subject at present, but DEATH IS FUCKING HARD ON A FAMILY AND WISHING SOMEONE'S FATHER (WHICH HE IS) DEAD IS ONE OF THE WORST THINGS YOU YOURSELF CAN DO, PERIOD.

I'm sure Barbara and Jenna would miss their father like crazy once he passes on, like I miss my father. Losing one's dad, as I'm sure a number of people here could tell you, hurts like a mofo and once Barbara and Jenna's day comes to lose their father they will be in a world of hurt for a long time to come.

So please, apologize for saying "Well, at least he'll be dead someday." Because that was nasty and rude and uncalled for and is not good at all, no matter what his political or personal beliefs are like. He's not some bloody dictator, he's just someone who's come to different conclusions about things than you have. And he IS truly appreciative of minorities, too. So there, I've said some nice things about the man, in keeping with the theme of the thread.

Jane Datsun (Dee the Lurker), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 19:44 (twenty-two years ago)

He probably knows some good places to get Bar-B-Q.

Charles McCain (Charles McCain), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 19:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Spencer's picture is priceless.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 19:46 (twenty-two years ago)

(I can't decide what I should defend first on ILX anymore: the midwest, Israel, or Conor Oberst.)

I don't understand "anti-intellectualism," I really don't. Why do people (hello, [East/West Coast]!) champion [Clinton] for being so "folksy"/"downhome"/"good ol' boy"/"one of us" so much?

bnw (bnw), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 19:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Point is: every politician except Jed Bartlet plays that role.

bnw (bnw), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 19:47 (twenty-two years ago)

bnw OTM w/ what I understand.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 19:48 (twenty-two years ago)

*quickly hugs Charles, Ally, bnw, and RJG, for their combined efforts into turning my hotheadedness into happiness*

Jane Datsun (Dee the Lurker), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 19:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Bush may be a "decent man" and I wouldn't wish death on him, but I have no faith in his intellect or his leadership capabilities and I didn't vote for him. I will therefore disparage him pretty much any chance I can.

Also, someone does not get fucking brownie points for "being nice to minorities"; this is a direct parallel to the Chris Rock routine about fathers who take care of their kids acting like the deserve medals rather than acknowledging that THAT'S WHAT THEY'RE SUPPOSED TO DO.

ObNice: He went to some very good schools.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 19:55 (twenty-two years ago)

"'I take care of my children!' Well that's what you supposed to do, you fool!"

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 19:59 (twenty-two years ago)

He gave me a big raise.

Millar (Millar), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 20:01 (twenty-two years ago)

And if these contract dollars keep flowing he's about to give me an even bigger one

Millar (Millar), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 20:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I haven't seen much appreciation for Bush's "down-homeness" in the Midwest. I guess I assumed it was a Southern thing.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 20:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Can you ask him to give me a raise? Also a job.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 20:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha Jordan, somehow I doubt that the upper midwest would be big fans of GWB, what with all of the pockets of liberalism and Southernerphobia.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 20:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Dan, dear, I wasn't targeting you specifically. If my memory is correct, that is. :)

*quickly scans upward*

Yup, I'm right. Wasn't targeting you specifically. You at least attempted your best compliment, which is a good attempt.

*scrolls upward again*

Looks like I might've just hit the one person. Oh well. Maybe some others were thinking the same thing too. Hm.

Jane Datsun (Dee the Lurker), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 20:15 (twenty-two years ago)

That picture is going to be in next month's GQ in some article about his relationship with his special friend.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 20:15 (twenty-two years ago)

He's no fucking Berlusconi

Millar (Millar), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 20:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Spencer you lie like a kite.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 20:17 (twenty-two years ago)

hes probably never tried to take "art photos" of 9 year old girls

Bob Shaw (Bob Shaw), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 20:21 (twenty-two years ago)

dee/jane we're discussing bush the public figure here. saying "one day he will die" is a way of stating that we find little or nothing nice to say about him as a public figure.

i have no idea what kind of father he is and i don't care.

amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 20:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Dee, I wasn't saying you were targeting me specifically. I was saying while I agree that calling for his death is tacky, I do not think he is a decent person. In fact, he represents at least one segment of Ivy League culture that I absolutely despise; the dim, opportunistic twats who used Daddy's influence/name to get where they are rather than any innate talent they might have. I find it completely abhorrent that people think he'd be qualified to manage a convenience store, let alone act as leader of the self-described "greatest democracy on the planet".

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 20:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Exactly, Dan!

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 20:28 (twenty-two years ago)

He looks out proper for real Americans.

Mr. Halliburton (Leee), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 20:29 (twenty-two years ago)

(er, that was re: the midwest thing, although I do not disagree with your last statement)

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 20:29 (twenty-two years ago)

amateurist see thread title FFS

Millar (Millar), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 20:31 (twenty-two years ago)

(I would like to apologize for blatantly disregarding the intent of this thread, BTW.)

ObNice: I bet he was a lot of fun to party with back in the day.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 20:32 (twenty-two years ago)

He probably had a lot of free coke.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 20:33 (twenty-two years ago)

millar i did find nice things to say about him, albeit with an ironic tinge.

apparently he leapt into action when asked to buy a keger.

amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 20:33 (twenty-two years ago)

amateurist, that's fairly mean-spirited of you, still. No, we're not exactly talking about George W. Bush the public figure, or else it would've said as much in the first post. By talking about him in general, you encompass the whole individual, not just the "public figure". Looking forward to his death is not exactly declaring you have nothing positive to say about him; if you felt that way, why not just say something inane such as, "Well, he does have nice ties"? And I'm sorry, but analysis of his parental skills is a part of this discussion.

And Dan, I recognize you have a different view of the man than I do and will acknowledge as such. Everyone's entitled to their own views so long as the views don't reach into the truly sick or mean. And viewing him as a dim individual is really neither. So I'll just happily agree to disagree and move on in this instance. :)

Jane Datsun (Dee the Lurker), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 20:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Ally, the GQ thing is actually true! If I were lying it would have been much more entertaining.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 20:36 (twenty-two years ago)

wow. I mean, why?

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 20:38 (twenty-two years ago)

ok it was silly of me, i apologize. that's why i followed it up with some less half-hearted attempts to find nice things about him and discuss the man's failings in specific terms.

what could we possibly know about his parental skills anyway? well, for one thing, he seemingly failed to impart a sense of caution about alcohol in his daughters. (maybe by only talking about his addictions in the mysterious terms of redemption and not the nitty-gritty of alcholism and quitting?)

amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 20:38 (twenty-two years ago)

See Dee, where I disagree with you is that everyone has a right to their views regardless of how truly sick, mean, perverted, or wrong others may find them. It's how you act in response to these views that are actionable as far as society is concerned (ie, you can't lock someone up for liking to look at autopsy photos, but once they start attempting to recreate them using their neighbors its WHOOP-WHOOP-that's-the-sound-of-the-police time).

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 20:39 (twenty-two years ago)

he probably bent Laura over and tamed her like a wild mustang

GO TEXAS!

Carey (Carey), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 20:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Dan, I'm just in a particularly sensitive position at this present time in regards to death and dying, and the thought that if my father had been a George W. Bush-like figure (which I'm sure he was -- he was a boss at his job and particularly difficult on the people he was in charge of, so I'm sure the people whom he was hardest on viewed him harshly) and there were people who had actually thought of him in terms of, "Well, the one good thing I *can* say about him is that at least someday he'll die," it would really, really, really, REALLY hurt. I mean, severely, to the point where I'd either want to make THEM suffer to match my own internal suffering, or more likely, just off and kill myself so I wouldn't have to live with the thought that SOMEONE ACTUALLY ONCE LOOKED FORWARD TO MY FATHER'S DEATH. Now, if Barbara and Jenna actually hate their father IRL and remain disconnected with him to the very end, then I'll offer apologies, but I do think they do love their father and hope to God they don't find out there were people who cheered on their father's demise once he does pass on.

Jane Datsun (Dee the Lurker), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 20:48 (twenty-two years ago)

like i said, we weren't cheering his death so much as saying there was nothing nice we could say about it.

amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 20:49 (twenty-two years ago)

about HIM

amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 20:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I understand your sensitivity Dee, but the problem is that EVERYONE has people who are at best ambivalent towards their death and GWB as a public figure has that magnified to the Nth degree. It's not nice and it's not fair but it shouldn't be surprising or unexpected.

Can you name a single world leader who hasn't had detractors who looked forward to his/her death? I can't.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 20:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I wouldn't wish Dubya dead. Yet. Give him another term to do some real damage, ala Reagan.

And he ain't no Texan. Born out of state, educated out of state, a complete failure in the state, bilking the nice people of Arlington, Texas out of several hundred million dollars to increase your profit on a baseball team, running the state government into the ground (I wonder how often Rick Perry would like to have beaten him senseless over the last couple of years "THANKS FOR THE FUCKING BUDGET CRISIS ASSHOLE")... There's just nothing about the man that's Texan. Talking folksy, wearing a cowboy hat and a ranch != Texas.

Thank God.

ObNice - he's always willing to share his stash.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 20:54 (twenty-two years ago)

aren't there like forty seven billion other threads where GWB is bitched about ad infinitum? That's not the fucking point here!!! Then again this is ILX wtf am I thinking

Millar (Millar), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 20:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I've been trying to make that point on every goddamned "Say something nice" thread all day. It's not worth the time. These people don't get the concept. At least make a joke about it if you're going to completely disregard the nicety.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 20:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Jane Datsun (Dee the Lurker), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 21:00 (twenty-two years ago)

isn't the thread title just bait though? it implies that there isn't much nice to say about him.

amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 21:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Christine 'Green Leafy Dragon' Indigo (cindigo), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 21:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Dee, I have to disagree with you when you say "he's not some bloody dictator." Now, perhaps Mr. Bush is not talking to severed heads while eating his dinner, but his decisions have caused bloody deaths. The man has blood on his hands. I am constantly amazed that you can support this man and his administration. Sure, I can see why some people might lean towards Republicanism, but supporting Bush is just taking it a step beyond what I can understand. You seem like such an intelligent and articulate individual. I just DO NOT GET the support of Bush. The tax cuts, the complete inability to see that homosexuals are equal to everyone else, the duping of the nation, the love of the death penalty (his record in Texas is astonishing), a total disregard of the environment and refusal to sign the Kyoto protocol, hypocritical and unfair view of world trade, a blind belief in the free market...I could go on.

I guess I'm just so amazed (maybe it's the Canadian-ness coming through) that George Bush is take seriously. Hell, no one even really knows what his opinions are...he's given only 8 press conferences since he took office. By this time in his first term, Clinton had given over 30, Bush Sr. over 60.

I just don't get it.

that's kinda nice.

Tad (llamasfur), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 21:03 (twenty-two years ago)

He never peed on anyone as far as I know.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 21:03 (twenty-two years ago)

the key phrase was "in my lifetime." since i was born in 1970, and tricky dicky became president in 1969, that is i suppose "in my lifetime." but i was also in diapers when he was president, so i wouldn't have been in a position to know first-hand how nixon's opponents reacted to him.

Tad (llamasfur), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 21:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, he tried to pee on me once. But everyone makes mistakes.

kirsten (kirsten), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 21:05 (twenty-two years ago)

he's organized the Democrats and anyone even vaguely left-of-center in their shared hatred of him like no-one else has done in my lifetime

He has?

ModJ, Tuesday, 19 August 2003 21:05 (twenty-two years ago)

He never peed on anyone as far as I know.

literally, or figuratively?

Tad (llamasfur), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 21:05 (twenty-two years ago)

He never peed on anyone who didn't want him to do it, as far as I know.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 21:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Wait, Dan, are you trying to tell me GWB peed on you? There goes my theory.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 21:07 (twenty-two years ago)

GWB DID NOT PEE ON ME.

He might've peed on Ned, though, I don't know.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 21:08 (twenty-two years ago)

HAHA GWB TOTALLY PEED ON YOU!!! *points, laughs*

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 21:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Right. It seems like the whole intent of the thread is sarcastic. "Haha, defend THIS!"

Prude (Prude), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 21:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude, I think I'd know if the leader of the Free World peed on me.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 21:15 (twenty-two years ago)

"Leader" of the "Free" World? Dan, you're playing semantics.

Leee (Leee), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 21:20 (twenty-two years ago)

ditto to Tad's uniting the Dems and add Bush's initiatives to fight aids in Africa, which despite being flawed as hell and not quite living up to the hype (albeit still more than Clinton ever did), has at least depoliticised that issue in terms of changing the debate from whether the us should do anything to fight the aids crisis in africa to what the us should do to fight the aids crisis in africa (baby steps). also, in consolidating his hold on the republican party (and by proxy the federal govt - gotv people) he cleared out alot of the assholes that made the nineties such a pissfest, albeit Tom Delay's still around. he's been pretty good at being a Republican Clinton in terms of provoking the same sort of stupidity and rancor in his haters (exhibit a: much of this thread).

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 21:20 (twenty-two years ago)

...That was in response to Amateurist's last post. But my reaction to him is perhaps just as visceral and subjective as yours, Dee. I feel nothing but pure hatred for him whenever I see his face, whenever I hear his name. The very fact of his presidency spits on any lingering ideas of fairness in the world I might have had. I hate him, hate him, hate him. And I realize this is not an intellectual response by any means and it undoubtedly keeps me from any balanced consideration of what his administration has done. But I'm sorry, this is how I feel.

Prude (Prude), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 21:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't tend to equate hating someone for having a feminist wife and getting blowjobs in the Oval Office with hating someone for making the US a laughingstock internationally, running the economy into the ground with handouts to the wealthy, blowing up a lot of nice, innocent people...

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 21:22 (twenty-two years ago)

"Leader" of the "Free" World? Dan, you're playing semantics.

amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 21:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Goodness, no! I love ya, Ammy.

Prude (Prude), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 21:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Jane, you might feel a different sort of pain and anger were you the daughter of one of the soldiers who've died or might die in Iraq. Not that Bush personally shot any of them in the head, but...

Hey! I got it! He hasn't personally shot any of his own soldiers in the head so far as I know!

And the guy who does the voice of Sideshow Bob likes him, so maybe he's funny in private.
