(Inspired by the most recent revival of the best alcoholic drink? thread.)

For me it was a sweet sparkling red from Bulgaria or somewhere in Eastern Europe that I once bought for the heck of it on a Valentine's Day. What an insult to viniculture that was.

I like good red wine, but when red wine is bad it's horrid.

ugh yes I hate sweet drinks. To reinforce j.lu's story, I got a bottle of Transylvanian merlot once for the kitchy label (black with red letters: Vampire Wine) and when I drank it years later when I couldn't find anything else in the house, I had to throw it out. I know it may not be the wine's fault, since it was so old and hadn't been put down properly, but ugh.

Bad tequila is usually worse than other liquors of equal badness, and ruins the reputation of good tequila, so I'm gonna go with it. It's almost true for gin, but I think it's martinis that ruin gin's rep.

Though saying "I hate beer" on ILX may be akin to saying "I hate freedom" to Dubya Bush, I really really do hate it. Pretty much every time I've tried to drink it, even in small quantities, I've wound up puking violently -- one time projectile-vomiting across a table directly into the face of a friend. The smell, the taste, everything about beer evokes the unpleasant memories of puke.

Everything alcoholic for me just doesn't taste right. I don't know, maybe it's because I'm not used to the taste or something, but I'd rather be drinking soda or tea or water. I'm not really saying this to brag or anything; I really find it terrible because I want to be a full-on adult and drink full-on adult drinks and everything but I can't because I just can't get past that taste of alcohol.

Please, if someone, anyone here can show me how to appreciate alcoholic drinks, I would be most grateful. And if someone can actually GET me drunk, please play the lottery on the same night because you would've done the impossible and apparently the time would be right for accomplishing the impossible. (When you DO win, btw, please give me a nice gift certificate to Best Buy. Thanks.)

I bet any money the beer+vodka thing they make here called Cold Shot tastes disgusting. Why anyone thought they could even market it is beyond me - the ads have lines like "give it a shot" in them which suggests even the makers think its pretty grim (anyone in Aus tried it, though?)

Stomach rotting cider is a nono. And I also despise Tequila, Cinzano, Martini and Stones filthy Ginger Wine (unless it's supplied with a healthy dose of bourbon) for various whitey-inspired reasons.

But if you want the fire, look no further than Raki. Because if you look further than Raki, you find... The Proto-Raki. My friend just bought a bottle of this stuff back from Crete and it is the brainchild of some moonshine-making lunatic. Drinking The Proto-Raki in shots, you can feel the grey cells spontaneously giving up the ghost. It's fire water of the first order, almost immediately inducing stomach lurches and saliva rushes. It tastes like fucking shit and smells like petrol. We don’t actually know how strong The Proto-Raki is because it’s supplied in unmarked recycled plastic coke bottles but put it this way: it’s fucking strong.

This wine that I had on the plane to Paris, thinking, "OK, I don't really like wine, but I'm going to spend the next week in France so I should probably drink some wine, and now's as good a time to start as any," so I got this little bottle of red wine and I drank it with some cheese that had come with the meal and at first it was ok, but then the tastes combined to make the most vile bitter vomitastic taste, I can still taste it in my imagination, and then the plane went through turbulence for the next hour, combining the wine and cheese in my stomach like a martini shaker while I gripped the seat armrests with white knuckles. I somehow managed not to throw up.

Worst drink I've ever had is far and away this horrendous, vile potion that some anthropologist friend of mine had brought back from China. I don't even know what it was called. I believe it is commercially available, but it comes in this big jug which also contains a snake. So like, it's got all these scale floaties in there as well. It was this goldish color, sort of like tequila. I've had moonshine before, and this was much worse (actually I kind of liked the moonshine). It tasted like I'd imagine battery acid to taste.

oh, and whoever said grappa upthread is totally insane. A good grappa is manna from heaven..

Cheap gin is much worse than cheap beer, whisky, rum or vodka.

Good gin isn't much better.

The worse drink I ever tasted was some clear Polish liquor that they had at a dingus day party at a bar I attended. It tasted like turpentine smells.

The worse shot is a buffalo sweat, which is a get the college student to puke shooter. I think it is 151, tabasco sauce, orange juice and tequila...horrid.

Some people like white russians, but I don't want any dairy products getting near my booze under any circumstances.

Fernet Branca. Don't ask for it by name. "A bitter, aromatic spirit made from of over 40 herbs and spices, including myrrh, rhubarb, chamomile, cardamom and saffron, with a base of grape alcohol."

I bought it in a Swiss Duty Free, just cause I wanted to bring back something exotic. It was fucking awful. I tried it on the rocks, I tried it with Coke, I tried it with coffee – all the things suggested on the label. Like drinking medicine. And unlike emsk's Chinese shit, not even very strong. I never finished the bottle and I *always* finish the bottle.

Out of date vodka.

My mum had a miniture Vanilla Absolut lying in a cabinet in the house in among various other minatures. The vodka was by far the oldest, though the others (dark rums mostly) had faded and gone a watery yellow colour. We brought them all out one night and debated whether to drink them. I argued that vodka couldn't go 'off', and to prove it I drank the Absolut. I was absolutely shocking. Kind of tasteless at first then the most bizarre, fusty vanilla flavour took over and I gagged all night.

Arak is the distilled palm wine from Sri Lanka and isn't too bad (a bit like rum), but I have an arak from Jordan (that I bought because I wanted the drinks cooler that went with it at duty free - but it's more like raki and is made from wine, apparently) that I am scared to open because I supsect it'll be vile. I've tried double distilled wines before and they weren't nice, hence my reservations.

I was once given a bottle of some vile thing with dragons on it, which tasted of pencil shavings. Thankfully I managed to leave it at somebody's party.

I think you can only really appreciate bitters (Campari, Fernet Branca etc) if you were born & raised in mainland Europe.

Like pastis, ouzo, raki etc they only ever taste like a good idea if consumed in blazing summer in their country of origin. They don't really work if you bring a bottle back from holiday & drink it on a wet February evening.

Fernet Branca is very good for relieving hangovers, mind.

Any drink beginning "cyan-" should probably be avoided. I was with Pete at one of those "tastings" and I believe we both chased the artichoke liqueur, or nearly, with "Aquavit," which was actually quite delicious but probably lethal in larger-than-a-thumbnail quantities.

You know it was never actually named "Mad Dog," right? It was made by Mogen David and I suppose was called Mogen David 20/20.

I had some rhubarb wine once that wasn't horrible, but I ended up dumping the last 1/2 of the bottle. I had been drinking half a glass now and then just to make sure I didn't like it.

And that Advocaat stuff just sounds like egg nog, which is OK in my book.

My aunt harped on and on and on at me to buy her a bottle so she could try it. No explaining what it was like on my part could persuade her of its foulness. She knew enough not to pop into a shop and buy it herself mind.

and what about cisco? has that been mentioned yet? another "fortified" sweet wine with a very high alcohol content sold very cheaply. like everclear, it's illegal in some places. oh god... everclear.

I think Lauren is correct.

I love how the Sanatogen wine is at pains on the label to point out that it has "no medicinal properties" Y-YET YOU CALL YOURSELF A TONIC. AND SANATOGEN MAKE VITAMINS, WTF IS UP WITH THAT?
