Friendster--It's the OLD Thing

Under enormous amounts of pressure, I too submitted to the status quo and joined the Friendster a few months ago. Don't get me wrong, it was all good fun. For about the first two days. And then, it wasn't. Yes, my list of Friends continued to grow, and yes, I had the opportunity to browse through the profiles of people that I didn't know that had tons in common with me. And yes, just as all of you have, I'm sure, noticed, my Friends started to become Friends with big- and small-time celebrities, entire towns and states, and yes, even totally abstract concepts! I quickly grew weary of seeing "Hey! Steve Guttenburg is in your Personal Network." or "Hey! The Death of All Humanity is in your Personal Network." Yeah, the profiles are entertaining, if you're that easily entertained. The point is, I began to log in less and less...

And then, all of the action that seemed to make Friendster so fun in the first place (the adding Friends that you really know and are real-life friends with part, the funny posts on the bulletin board, the occasional surprise message from someone that you hadn't seen in a while, or someone you'd never met at all, etc.) started to wane, and eventually, nearly died down. I've got a million and something people in my network, and nothing ever freakin' happens!

And so, I guess I'm just looking for some of you ILXors (yes, I'm a lurker. Is that bad?) to help me out here...I know many of you are die-hard defenders, and I'm sure some of you are really enjoying the Friendster thing as it should be, but I feel like there must be others of you out there who have felt the strange cold darkness that exists where Friendster once did.

Long first post, eh?

Otto von Lurkenstein, Thursday, 28 August 2003 19:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought everyone on friendster was trying to get laid.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 28 August 2003 20:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought everyone alive was trying to get laid.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Thursday, 28 August 2003 20:04 (twenty-two years ago)

well of course I was implying that everyone was using friendster in order to facilitate the getting of laid.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 28 August 2003 20:08 (twenty-two years ago)

So that means there's no eunychs on Friendster?

oops (Oops), Thursday, 28 August 2003 20:12 (twenty-two years ago)

the getting of laid

your usage I do deeply dig

mookieproof (mookieproof), Thursday, 28 August 2003 20:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I think that eunuchs can get laid.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 28 August 2003 20:14 (twenty-two years ago)

yes, see bombay eunuch

amateurist (amateurist), Thursday, 28 August 2003 20:16 (twenty-two years ago)

somebody care to write a treatise on how exactly to get friendster to perform this service for you? the clueless of us in the audience still need help.

Kingfish (Kingfish), Thursday, 28 August 2003 20:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought eunuchs had no genitalia?

oops (Oops), Thursday, 28 August 2003 20:18 (twenty-two years ago)

i thought they had no balls

JasonD (JasonD), Thursday, 28 August 2003 20:22 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm not on friendster, i must be one of those annoying people who run around yelling "i hate sex!!!!!!!"

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Thursday, 28 August 2003 21:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm afraid friendster's wank, but I'll go further and say it's always been wank. Life'll be better without it cluttering up our lives.

Mark C (Mark C), Thursday, 28 August 2003 21:40 (twenty-two years ago)

i've met some nice people on friendster and enjoy logging on. i didn't expect it to fix my life.

dan (dan), Thursday, 28 August 2003 21:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Kingfish, write charming letters to cute people, move to hott IM conversations and eventually, if all goes well, you'll see some action. At least that's how it's worked for me.

Texas Sam (thatgirl), Thursday, 28 August 2003 21:46 (twenty-two years ago)

what Dan said.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 28 August 2003 21:53 (twenty-two years ago)

i met someone through friendster and it was utter disaster.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 28 August 2003 21:54 (twenty-two years ago)

what happened?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 28 August 2003 21:57 (twenty-two years ago)

kingfish, bookmark people and make the bookmarks visible. a few will write based on that. maybe somebody has bookmarked you. write letters to lots of people. if they respond, tell them you want to take them to dinner. there will be disasters, so maybe dinners aren't practical. for me, the disasters aren't so bad because i learn stuff, and most people are nice.

dan (dan), Thursday, 28 August 2003 21:59 (twenty-two years ago)

i like meeting friends i know or knew or seeing profiles of people i've seen around town. which to me makes friendster more interesting than dating sites. but getting messages from people i don't know makes me uncomfortable. because they obviously just thought i was cute (and are trying to get laid) and if i look at them and don't think they're cute, they just become annoying (which is 10 times out of 10). but i put up a nerdy picture so my problems are all solved!

the whole idea of starting a relationship based on a photo and one or 2 common interests or clever answers has always been kinda weird to me anyway. that kinda stuff amounts to about .02% of what a person is.

lolita corpus (lolitacorpus), Thursday, 28 August 2003 22:04 (twenty-two years ago)

... but i met ned through friendster. so IT'S ALL WORTH IT!!!

lolita corpus (lolitacorpus), Thursday, 28 August 2003 22:06 (twenty-two years ago)

that .02 is just a starter to begin getting to know the rest of the person. Relationships start if you like what you see once you get past the clever answers and common interests.

Texas Sam (thatgirl), Thursday, 28 August 2003 22:07 (twenty-two years ago)

she turned out to be a total scenester mushroom.

and not just that but the kind who spends her days complaining about the same awful scenester behavior she's engednering by her very existence.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 28 August 2003 22:16 (twenty-two years ago)

"mushroom" ?

Texas Sam (thatgirl), Thursday, 28 August 2003 22:17 (twenty-two years ago)

forget common interests--i look for interesting interests. or uninteresting interests expressed interestingly, that can be good too.

the scenester problem is what you end up with if you look for common interests.

(thank you, jess, for the smallville and for superlongevity tips.)

dan (dan), Thursday, 28 August 2003 22:22 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, the problem was really that this girl and i seemed to get along in chat, but have NOTHING in common. her life is olympia bars, house parties, thrown together punk rock shows, her "band", namedropping ("i used to date the guy from the locust"...i am NOT making this up), and dressing like make out club. nothing wrong with any of those, inherently, just nothing i really want anything to do with.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 28 August 2003 22:25 (twenty-two years ago)

i mean, i'd hit it, don't get it twisted.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 28 August 2003 22:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Dan, did you buy Smallville or d/l it? I want a CD copy.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 28 August 2003 22:32 (twenty-two years ago)

d/l. i'd like a cd copy too.

dan (dan), Thursday, 28 August 2003 22:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll tell you if I find it. (additional thanks to strongo for the recommendation!)

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 28 August 2003 22:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Yay Smallville! I haven't praised it enough.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 28 August 2003 22:48 (twenty-two years ago)

now I'm starting to think you're not talking about the show.

s1utsky (slutsky), Thursday, 28 August 2003 22:49 (twenty-two years ago)

You're correct, sir.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 29 August 2003 01:34 (twenty-two years ago)

so what it is?

s1utsky (slutsky), Friday, 29 August 2003 01:42 (twenty-two years ago)

As reviewed by our trusty Andy K.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 29 August 2003 01:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Oooh looks good.

s1utsky (slutsky), Friday, 29 August 2003 01:44 (twenty-two years ago)

(nice cover too!)

s1utsky (slutsky), Friday, 29 August 2003 01:44 (twenty-two years ago)

i never seriously considered friendster as a way to meet anyone, i see it as silly fun with your existing friends and maybe getting to know friends-of-friends but not out to the nth degree.

Orbit (Orbit), Friday, 29 August 2003 04:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I only used to log in like once or twice per week, tops. But lately a bunch of my friends have really been making use of that bulletin board feature - like, to the exclusion of sending email - so I kind of have to check it daily these days...

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 29 August 2003 04:35 (twenty-two years ago)

though the founder of friendster sounded like a tool in the recent sfguardian and salon articles, I think he was right in that, if you don't actually use it to become friends with just actual people that you really know, the pool of people becomes much less interesting because it's too diluted. I dunno. I still like it because I get to see how I'm connected to all the other people in the bay area I've seen at shows for years and years but never talked to. It hasn't driven me to actually bother meeting any of them really either, but I like reading about their interests. BECAUSE I AM AN AWFUL VOYEUR.

Plus I like how you're always one degree of seperation from some dominatrixy fetish chick.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Friday, 29 August 2003 05:37 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm "just here to help", that truly describes my purpose here on this planet.

duane, Friday, 29 August 2003 09:16 (twenty-two years ago)

jess i just invited you to be my friend, can you handle it

duane, Friday, 29 August 2003 09:29 (twenty-two years ago)

i was trying to upload a photo of myself but "the above file name (was) invalid", i give up. also i don't like the options you are given for "status", none of them exactly describe how people like me live.

duane, Friday, 29 August 2003 09:36 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm "in a relationship" with the whole goddamn motherfuckin goddamn world....my heart is overflowing with love! "CRAZY RIGHT NOW", hell yes i feel ya!

duane, Friday, 29 August 2003 09:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh no!

I've been on the 'ster for a few days now and I'm still enjoying it.

You mean to tell me the novelty will wear off?

Arrggghhhh!!!

mei (mei), Friday, 29 August 2003 10:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Damn! I hadn't even THOUGHT about trying to get laid! ;)

Yeah, for me, at least, it's lost it's luster...

Otto von Lurkenstein, Friday, 29 August 2003 12:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Duane you have a girlfriend, don't rub it in

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 29 August 2003 12:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm really glad yr happy, if I'm being serious!

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 29 August 2003 12:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Friendster had luster?

Larcole (Nicole), Friday, 29 August 2003 12:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I only joined because someone wanted me to see their profile.

The thing is so slow, and I have a high-speed connection, that it's not worth it.

Kerry (dymaxia), Friday, 29 August 2003 13:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Friendster had luster?

well, lust, at any rate.

Kingfish (Kingfish), Friday, 29 August 2003 13:06 (twenty-two years ago)

No more friendster dates for me, I sweartogod. I just went on another one and it predictable boring and uncomfortable.

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 29 August 2003 17:40 (twenty-two years ago)

it was predictably boring and confortable, i meant

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 29 August 2003 17:41 (twenty-two years ago)

but you said you were having a good time! *hmpf*

friendster! (nickalicious), Friday, 29 August 2003 17:59 (twenty-two years ago)

which have you out there had better success with? friendster dates or nerve dates?

Kingfish (Kingfish), Friday, 29 August 2003 18:25 (twenty-two years ago)

street hookers

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Friday, 29 August 2003 20:01 (twenty-two years ago)

street hookers are more honest

Kingfish (Kingfish), Friday, 29 August 2003 20:02 (twenty-two years ago)

King, friendster dates. I've ended up dating two guys off there for a couple of mths each. Nerve, never more than a one-date thing.

Texas Sam (thatgirl), Friday, 29 August 2003 21:33 (twenty-two years ago)

friendster just offers a new and strange way to stay in touch with old friends, and to keep tabs on their changing scenes/tastes/etc. i like that.

amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 29 August 2003 21:45 (twenty-two years ago)

wow, sam, that's not too bad. nerve for me has been much been either a "one-let's-get-a-pint date" thing or a "you're-cool-to-hang-with-but-i'm-much-more-hot-for-somebody-else" thing.

haven't met anybody new thru friendster, yet.

Kingfish (Kingfish), Friday, 29 August 2003 23:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Best way to meet people on friendster: get drunk and do random searches in the gallery, check what kind of people near you are on the thing, and start sending random messages. I suppose you could do this sober too, but what fun would that be? Anyways, it worked for me...

The Man they call Dan (The Man they call Dan), Saturday, 30 August 2003 04:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I have hit 100! WOOHOOO!!

(all you hataz with more than 100 already, shaddup - yeah i'm looking at ned and stence.)

Texas, Biyatch! (thatgirl), Monday, 1 September 2003 21:40 (twenty-two years ago)

reading through this thread I'm glad I have nothing to do with this.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 11:31 (twenty-two years ago)

zing

amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 14:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Everyone's profiles on friendster are pretty mediocre except Michael Daddino's. His makes me want to meet him / talk to him.

David. (Cozen), Monday, 15 September 2003 22:38 (twenty-two years ago)

This is why you must come down next month to London for the mass celebration. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 15 September 2003 22:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I hear there's a wedding too. OK. What are the dates, I am not promising anything (in fact I'm probably saying 'no' but I can harbor it as hope I suppose)?

I guess no-one puts any time into it, which is fair enough, (I'm a compulsive re-writer), but even the merest of efforts has reduced the whole of Friendster's population to undesirable mulch. Maybe I'm too pessimistic, idealistic, &c.

David. (Cozen), Monday, 15 September 2003 23:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe you're just an ass.

Texas, Biyatch! (thatgirl), Monday, 15 September 2003 23:05 (twenty-two years ago)

The big wedding celebration thingy is on the 17th, a Friday.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 15 September 2003 23:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I am an ass.

David. (Cozen), Monday, 15 September 2003 23:13 (twenty-two years ago)

(I'm also unconsolably upset but that's no excuse I guess.)

David. (Cozen), Monday, 15 September 2003 23:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't take it personally Cozen. I was just playing devil's ass-ocate.

Texas, Biyatch! (thatgirl), Monday, 15 September 2003 23:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Yr not reading the right ones

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Monday, 15 September 2003 23:49 (twenty-two years ago)

If yr getting sick of INTELLECTUAL types who seem to think the reader should be impressed they like DON'T WATCH TV, then fair enough. Actually most profiles are awful.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Monday, 15 September 2003 23:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Spousal pressure got the best of me. I'm not there to get laid, unless something I type/do there has the potential to make the missus (more) horny. (Unlikely -- would you want to get into the pants of someone who is dull enough to list WKRP* and Battle of the Network Stars as favorite TV shows?)

*SCUM (of the Earth) were on the other night. Michael Des Barres reminded me of Luke Haines.

Andy K (Andy K), Monday, 15 September 2003 23:53 (twenty-two years ago)

There are intellectual types wha? I haven't seen those. Dunno if I want to.

I haven't seen much of the 'don't watch TV' brigade either, tho' it's a common enough meme.

Michael Daddino's profile.

David. (Cozen), Monday, 15 September 2003 23:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Andy, you wouldn't happen to have Battle of the Network Stars on tape, would you? It won't get you laid, but I would pay you for copies!

Nicolars (Nicole), Monday, 15 September 2003 23:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Apologies Nicolars -- I binged on it when Trio was showing it and didn't bother to make copies. Chalk it up to shame.

Andy K (Andy K), Monday, 15 September 2003 23:59 (twenty-two years ago)

yes i'm sick of everyone listening like Catcher in the Rye as their favorite book and thinking thats so profound whenit's like the only book they read that was assigned to them in 9th grade etc andt hen putting "I never watch TV!" when they go home and watch Blind Date every night I KNOW PEOPLE who've done this

Vic, Tuesday, 16 September 2003 00:03 (twenty-two years ago)

shipmates > blind date.

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 00:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Apologies Nicolars -- I binged on it when Trio was showing it and didn't bother to make copies. Chalk it up to shame.

I DISOWN YOU.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 00:26 (twenty-two years ago)

someone who is dull enough to list ... Battle of the Network Stars as favorite TV shows

HEY!!! :(

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 01:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh god, my college has a profile

Drew's Interests: Tom Kean, The Gays, Squirrels, Fried Ravioli

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 03:30 (twenty-two years ago)

haha, it's cool, cozen posted abt how ho-hum friendstah was after looking at my profile!!

(i'm lookin at YOU!)

geeta, Tuesday, 16 September 2003 04:58 (twenty-two years ago)

The only thing I've enjoyed about friendster yet was finding out that I wasn't the only friendster to put guerilla parenting as an interest...alas, they have already long since deleted their profile, making me alone in the friendster guerilla parenting revolution once again. :-(

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 11:37 (twenty-two years ago)

The one girl I met over friendster who actually sent me messages and said she'd come to my party didn't show. :(

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 11:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Making dumb comments about people (including yrself) is fun, that's about the extent of my love for this thing

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 11:42 (twenty-two years ago)

My friendster profile is very surly, and most of my little things that people wrote about me talk about how I'm basically a jerk.

NA (Nick A.), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 12:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I actually say serious things sometimes, but y'know, they're not as amusing. I love you all, my friendster friends!

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 12:19 (twenty-two years ago)

''Everyone's profiles on friendster are pretty mediocre except Michael Daddino's.''

wah! b-but i just joined the thing and haven't had time to work on it *cries*

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 12:33 (twenty-two years ago)

friendster is whacked lately! god. someone i did not approve is my friend! fortunately i know and like this person, but WTF? and i am not getting some messages.
the bulletin board has helped me to remain partially sane while being out of town spending time in an extremely small town in a dry county! without it i wouldn't get to talk to my friends at home as much.

who cares if your profile isn't perfect? who the hell has time to worry about that. forget it! i think mostly people like to read their own and pat themselves on the back for how clever they are, or feel they are. i enjoy scoffing at others. do a search for creed or fear factor or something. it's fairly entertaining.

Emilymv (Emilymv), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 12:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I miss the salad days of fake-friendster-heavy friendster, when Chewbacca left me monosyllabic testimonials and I got emails with headlines like: God is now your Friend!.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 12:49 (twenty-two years ago)

nickalicious, you have got to deal with your Chewbacca separation anxiety!

Emilymv (Emilymv), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 13:14 (twenty-two years ago)

one month passes...
They are doing a story on Friendster on ABC World News Tonight. I am interviewed on the story as being the last person who hasn't joined.

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 16 October 2003 20:25 (twenty-two years ago)

haha! I was wondering when you'd give in. I want teeny on my list.:(

A Girl Named Sam (thatgirl), Thursday, 16 October 2003 20:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Thank you for giving me the heads up, teeny. I'll have to check this report out tonight. (Oh yes, and the last sentence is laughfest central. *applause* Though I too would love it if you were to join Friendster. I've been at 28 Friendsters for about a month and I'd like to change that.)

(How's that for a long parenthetical statement, hm?)

haha, it's cool, cozen posted abt how ho-hum friendstah was after looking at my profile!!

(i'm lookin at YOU!)

(a.) I'm 65% certain David's also seen my profile.
(b.) If that's the case, I second the above quote (thanks, Geeta).
(c.) If that's not the case, hey, check me out. Chances are very good you might dismiss my profile too, but hey, at least you'd have checked it out for sure.

Oh yeah, and Friendster CAN be nice if you're really involved with it, sure. If you're not -- then it's just there.

Friendster still hasn't gotten me laid yet.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Thursday, 30 October 2003 01:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Did I really say that?

Yeah, I did.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Thursday, 30 October 2003 01:24 (twenty-two years ago)

That's two of us, man.

Miggie (Miggie), Thursday, 30 October 2003 01:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I haven't gotten laid via F-ster, but I did find a new scrabble league!!!

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 30 October 2003 01:32 (twenty-two years ago)

playing scrabble => getting laid surely

geeta (geeta), Thursday, 30 October 2003 01:33 (twenty-two years ago)

"I thought you were bringing the Scrabble board."

"No, but I've got this Twister game here..."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 30 October 2003 01:33 (twenty-two years ago)

xp to geeta:

where is that euphimism thread...

to ned:

there are 12 players, so there are a minimum of 3 boards, sometimes 6 during the "1 on 1 rounds". it's a pretty strong league though, i am sufficiently stimulated.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 30 October 2003 01:36 (twenty-two years ago)

double word score!!!

geeta (geeta), Thursday, 30 October 2003 01:36 (twenty-two years ago)

ah the fated "triple X" score. i know, i know, i am a nerd.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 30 October 2003 01:38 (twenty-two years ago)

some play literati instead.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 30 October 2003 01:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Stimulation always did begin in the mind.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Thursday, 30 October 2003 01:39 (twenty-two years ago)

This talk of Scrabble is not getting me laid!

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Thursday, 30 October 2003 01:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Or is it?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 30 October 2003 01:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I haven't gotten laid yet thanks to it, but I've met some really cool girls through it. Maybe some cool guys too but that's not important.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 30 October 2003 01:40 (twenty-two years ago)

It's something to mention at the bar..."hey, aren't you on friendster too?"

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 30 October 2003 01:41 (twenty-two years ago)

scrabble will so get you laid with indie kids!! indie kids don't know how to get laid without scrabble

geeta (geeta), Thursday, 30 October 2003 01:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, I've checked every orifice, Dan, and I see no sign of...laiddenness.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Thursday, 30 October 2003 01:42 (twenty-two years ago)

admittedly what I'm describing is probably less beneficial in a big town. But in State College it rocks.

I'm so getting my Scrabble game from home. Geeta's probably right!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 30 October 2003 01:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Indie kids! Ewww! Indie kids? EEWWW!

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Thursday, 30 October 2003 01:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, I've checked every orifice, Dan, and I see no sign of...laiddenness.

There's still 3 hours left tonight, Daddino.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Thursday, 30 October 2003 01:43 (twenty-two years ago)

(Hey, speaking of Scrabble, you know the Selchow & Righter Co. used to be in my old hometown before they were bought out by Coleco!)

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Thursday, 30 October 2003 01:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 30 October 2003 01:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Mike needs a man who will run around the room with a lamppost while Mike screams "UZBEKISTAN! FIND UZBEKISTAN!"

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 30 October 2003 01:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Gygax! Tell me about this scrabble league!

JuliaA (j_bdules), Thursday, 30 October 2003 01:54 (twenty-two years ago)

JuliaA

firstly, it is better than my last one.

secondly, it's a neighborhood league which is great except we all play at a bordering 'hood (if you will, a "rival" neighborhood... see, i used to have a fakester for my neighborhood but it was eaten by the friendster police.)

thirdly, everybody drinks beer while we play which is like a handicap if you are a lightweight (me!). so i have to maintain composure.

lastly, it's real fun. it's 7 gals and 5 guys. all walks of life but we're all age homogenous (25-35). i haven't flaked yet.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 30 October 2003 02:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmmm. Suddenly I understand a certain friendster request this morning...

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 30 October 2003 02:46 (twenty-two years ago)

"PervScrabble wants to be your Friend!"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 30 October 2003 02:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean, seriously, "PervScrabble"? I've creamed my jeans at the name alone.

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 30 October 2003 02:50 (twenty-two years ago)

also JuliaA it scores like a bowling league, it's how you perform against your average rather than straight points.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 30 October 2003 02:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmmm. Suddenly I understand a certain friendster request this morning...

Oh...uh...NO! It was innocent, I swear.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Thursday, 30 October 2003 03:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Your league sounds cool, gygax. Though I could imagine how drinking while playing would be a serious handicap.

PervScrabble? Damn.

JuliaA (j_bdules), Thursday, 30 October 2003 03:31 (twenty-two years ago)

So...anyway...seriously, is using Friendster a terrible way to meet people for dating? 'Cause everytime I've sent some somebody I don't know "uh, hi" message, I get no response at all. Is it because my technique is all wrong, the profile's too geeky, or that people aren't generally using Friendster the way I am, or what?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 12:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Didn't you have a Friendster date when I was in NY, Michael? Seemed like a nice guy. Told us. A lot. About snuff films.

But I'm sure there's lots more out there!

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 18:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I haven't checked my friendster page in quite a while. It has probably died of neglect.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 19:50 (twenty-two years ago)

two weeks pass...
Friendster Quickly Gathering Foes

bad jode (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 24 November 2003 17:32 (twenty-two years ago)

It might also help a good chunk of the messages I've sent (and been sent) in their system didn't disappear.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 24 November 2003 17:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm more of a friendster junky now than ever before.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 24 November 2003 17:38 (twenty-two years ago)

that nationstates thing got me a few dates but fster is just a waste.

typo acapulco (gcannon), Monday, 24 November 2003 17:42 (twenty-two years ago)

It might also help a good chunk of the messages I've sent (and been sent) in their system didn't disappear.

Yep, part of the reason I've mostly given up on it; I'm just never sure if my messages are getting through, and I've received more than one message from other people saying "did you get my message?". It's kinda like a bunch of people with blindfolds and earplugs sitting in the same room shouting "Hello? Hello? Can you hear me?"

Also, I occasionally get email saying something like "(blah blah) has added you as a friend" and then I log in and they're not in my friends list yet, sometimes taking 2 or 3 days.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 24 November 2003 17:57 (twenty-two years ago)

There was a highly entertaining article in the Sunday NY Times magazine about online dating that focused mainly on Friendster.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 24 November 2003 18:28 (twenty-two years ago)

i dont know what people are complaining about. seems ok to me

charltonlido (gareth), Monday, 24 November 2003 20:15 (twenty-two years ago)

i've had a number of messages I've sent not arrive, also, bulletin board posts don't always show up for everyone (our friend put one up and I could see it, but my wife couldn't, at least for over a day, then it suddenly appeared. no it wasn't a browser cache problem). other than this and the general slowness, it seems okay.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Monday, 24 November 2003 20:40 (twenty-two years ago)

That NY times article was great. Though I'm not sure online dating is as slutty as they make it out to be.

bnw (bnw), Monday, 24 November 2003 20:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I've had bulletin board posts disappear completely then reappear again later out of the ether. The same with messages.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 24 November 2003 20:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Recently I've also noticed (and Bryan has confirmed) that sometimes while you're on Friendster, it not only stops displaying images of any kind, it kills Internet Explorer's ability to receive any image from any other site, too. Which leads me to believe that maybe Ned was right, maybe there's something else going on with that site that's less than up-front.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 18:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Recently I've also noticed (and Bryan has confirmed) that sometimes while you're on Friendster, it not only stops displaying images of any kind, it kills Internet Explorer's ability to receive any image from any other site, too.

this has happened to me too! what's up with this?

bad jode (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 18:42 (twenty-two years ago)

When logging on today I've just received massive error messages.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 18:44 (twenty-two years ago)

NED FINALLY BROKE FRIENDSTER!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 18:45 (twenty-two years ago)

IT IS THE PROPHECY!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 18:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I've been having the same mysterious image-disappearance problems that Sean and Bryan are having.

So now you know it's not just a Canada thing.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 18:45 (twenty-two years ago)

And it doesn't happen with Netscape, either.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 18:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Some ideas:

1) Unintentionally bad programming on the part of the Friendster people. (Quite possible)
2) Non-compliant code in IE that renders W3-approved stuff useless. (Also quite possible)
3) Intentionally bad programming on the part of the Friendster folks to drive people to a different browser. (Stupid, because it may drive people away from Friendster instead of IE, but considering the zealous nature of anti-M$ people, sadly also possible.)

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 18:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, Sean's right! I should collect my money now.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 18:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Signed in again yesterday after eons, but there were no bells and whistles tempting me to stay.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 19:49 (twenty-two years ago)

maybe they should start handing out candy. or hugs.

Dean Gulberry (deangulberry), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 21:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I got one of those too!

I've just discovered myspace.com today. I think I might like it more.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 21:21 (twenty-two years ago)

well, it is your space.

Dean Gulberry (deangulberry), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 21:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Damn straight.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 21:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Friendster just received a big infusion of VC cash, so hopefully they're upgrading.

Myspace is interesting, but it's so ghetto compared to Friendster.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 21:25 (twenty-two years ago)

VC

Viet Cong?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 21:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Awesome stack trace, that. I've abandoned Friendster as I'm agoraphobic, but I recall that they had pretty serious cacheing/load balancing issues. Updates not propagating in a timely manner, etc.

Colin Saunders (csaunders), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 21:27 (twenty-two years ago)

(Because I thought venture capitalism died in 1999 and all.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 21:27 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm on myspace but i hardly ever go over there. i think i might be burnt out on this particular net phenomon.

A Girl Named Sam (thatgirl), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 21:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Myspace is interesting, but it's so ghetto compared to Friendster.

You're saying Friendster is Blinging?

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 22:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned, VC didn't die, it was just recovering from the massive trauma of giving lots of cash to any schmuck with a business plan and a domain name.

hstencil, Tuesday, 25 November 2003 22:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Friendster is Temporarily Unavailable

We are experiencing heavy site traffic. Please be patient while we try to connect you. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 02:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I just tried myspace today too. Now, it's completely fuct as well. Timing out completely. I like some of the features, but it was pretty fugly. But, unlike the pure voyeurism of friendster, I had two messages from pretty strangers.

Dale the Titled (cprek), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 02:34 (twenty-two years ago)

My space is definitely fugly.

possible m (mandinina), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 03:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Jon Williams (ex machina), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 19:26 (twenty-two years ago)

one month passes...
I know friendster is over blah blah but seriously how can I illicit more messages from strangers?

Aaron W (Aaron W), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 03:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm all over friendster again. It's working a little better.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 07:04 (twenty-two years ago)

i havent been in months.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 07:06 (twenty-two years ago)

i love friendster, still!

Emilymv (Emilymv), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 10:13 (twenty-two years ago)

someone emailed me recently to say he liked my profile.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 12:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it's fun.
Still.

Is it playing up for anyone else lately though?

mei (mei), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 12:24 (twenty-two years ago)

its playing up.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 12:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Please explain why anyone who isn't single would want to use friendster?

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 12:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I only started bcz other ilxors were using it and I wanted to see what it was abt. and writing testimonials is fun though I haven't done any in ages.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 12:44 (twenty-two years ago)

because they're an INTERWEB MENTALIST interested in talking to new people, mark.

do you not visit any more, then? now my friendster world is truly empty.

hobart paving (hobart paving), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 12:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I changed my profile, yet STILL no unsolicited messages!

Interests: Sharing a bottle of expensive wine and buying you expensive things

Favorite TV Shows: I'm really too busy being successful to watch TV

Favorite Movies: Why don't you tell me about some of YOUR favorite movies?

About Me: I'm a Renaissance man stuck in the 21st century, finding it difficult to be sensitive and caring with so much love in my heart. But we're all just boats adrift at sea looking for a safe harbor to call our own.

Who I Want to Meet: Docks. No Uzbekestanians.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 22:10 (twenty-two years ago)

About Me: but enough about me. What do you think of me?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 22:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Aaron, that is absolutely fantastic.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 22:26 (twenty-two years ago)

aaron is the locksmith of love.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 22:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe I can incorporate "shine your love light down upon me" somewhere in there?

Aaron W (Aaron W), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 22:46 (twenty-two years ago)

you might be able to work that into your boats at sea theme. i'm thinking searchlights of love, lighthouses of love...

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 22:49 (twenty-two years ago)

restless seamen.

Carey (Carey), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 22:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Fantastic!

Aaron W (Aaron W), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 23:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Shine your lighthouse of love upon my restless seamen.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 23:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Now join Interpol.

Carey (Carey), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 23:25 (twenty-two years ago)

if i were drinking something, i would have just spit it out and choked with laughter.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 23:58 (twenty-two years ago)

This is my friendster-inspired haiku from the "write a haiku about something daft" thread:

distance disappeared
talking light shine through the walls
false sunlight friendster

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 00:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Sweet!! It worked and I got my first unsolicited message!! Um... now what?

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 16 January 2004 02:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Say hi.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 16 January 2004 02:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Friendster ROXX.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 16 January 2004 02:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Aaron, just write back something along the lines of "your profile is neat and your pics are cute".

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 16 January 2004 02:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay... here goes...

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 16 January 2004 02:50 (twenty-two years ago)

It's bullshit! No-one except my girlfriend has offered to be my friend!

the music mole (colin s barrow), Friday, 16 January 2004 02:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Wait she gave me her real email address... heavy. Oh, and she has cute friends. Rock on!

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 16 January 2004 02:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I shouldn't have said I was in a relationship and was just here to help.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Friday, 16 January 2004 02:54 (twenty-two years ago)

being desperate doesnt work either apparently.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 16 January 2004 02:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I am IMing her... it is .... awkward

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 16 January 2004 03:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Tell her you love poetry, romantic dinners, classical music, old fashioned dancing and sailing the world in your yacht!

the music mole (colin s barrow), Friday, 16 January 2004 03:07 (twenty-two years ago)

alternately tell her you want to eat sorbet from the bowl of her asshole

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 16 January 2004 03:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Just remember to play it cool! Try to remember (even if you really do like this girl), that this is just the first of many friendster dates you'll have to juggle!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 16 January 2004 03:09 (twenty-two years ago)

nice Jess.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 16 January 2004 03:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm ignoring that Jess. Alternately, great advice Spencer.

And it turns out she lives on Park Ave... I don't know if she's gonna be impressed with a yacht.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 16 January 2004 03:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Say two yachts.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 16 January 2004 03:12 (twenty-two years ago)

my advice goes unheeded and yet it's worked many times.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 16 January 2004 03:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, but this is a human Jess, not a dachshund.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Friday, 16 January 2004 03:16 (twenty-two years ago)

you can't be sure until you hear the voice.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 16 January 2004 03:17 (twenty-two years ago)

and sometimes even then.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 16 January 2004 03:17 (twenty-two years ago)

(wildest spring break EVER.)

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 16 January 2004 03:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Some random guy sent me a message today saying that he'd LOVE to have a BITING CONTEST with me. WTF?!???

Kim (Kim), Friday, 16 January 2004 03:22 (twenty-two years ago)

sorry.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 16 January 2004 03:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Why 'sorbet'? Are you like, better than us or something?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 16 January 2004 03:28 (twenty-two years ago)

hey at least i didn't say "gelato"

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 16 January 2004 03:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Froyo

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 16 January 2004 03:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Well... I guess I learned that I don't have a whole lot in common with 19 year olds. She pretty much stopped IMing after I used the word "erotic" to describe the Currin exhibit at the Whitney. And you wanted me to talk about sorbet and her poop chute!

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 16 January 2004 03:32 (twenty-two years ago)

(As opposed to eating Frodo...well, I should stop here.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 16 January 2004 03:32 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah i think 'erotic' is a no-no word

g--ff (gcannon), Friday, 16 January 2004 03:33 (twenty-two years ago)

but poop chute is a-ok

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 16 January 2004 03:34 (twenty-two years ago)

yes-yes

g--ff (gcannon), Friday, 16 January 2004 03:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Instead of erotic, you should have said 'moving'. Chicks can't disinguish between emotional feelings and sexual ones, you see, like us fellas can.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Friday, 16 January 2004 03:37 (twenty-two years ago)

actually jess, Bitey (as I shall now call him) is your height, 6'5(?) but you look far less like Jaws from the Bond movies than this guy. plus he actually had a pic of himself jumping in the air clicking his heels together. You wouldn't do that.

Kim (Kim), Friday, 16 January 2004 03:37 (twenty-two years ago)

not on film, no

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 16 January 2004 03:38 (twenty-two years ago)

for less than $500

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 16 January 2004 03:38 (twenty-two years ago)

ok - who's got $$$$$?

Kim (Kim), Friday, 16 January 2004 03:40 (twenty-two years ago)

whoever snapped the photo for him must be all kinds of wonderful

g--ff (gcannon), Friday, 16 January 2004 03:42 (twenty-two years ago)

ok, how's five bucks?

Kim (Kim), Friday, 16 January 2004 04:25 (twenty-two years ago)

i'd do just about anything right now for a little attention

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 16 January 2004 04:27 (twenty-two years ago)

here - I'll share bitey with you if it'll cheer you up

http://www.imagemagician.com/images/grimstitch/biteyjump.jpg

Kim (Kim), Friday, 16 January 2004 04:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I forgot to mention the body hair, didn't I?

Kim (Kim), Friday, 16 January 2004 04:48 (twenty-two years ago)

!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 16 January 2004 04:51 (twenty-two years ago)

AUGH

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 16 January 2004 05:04 (twenty-two years ago)

he's bigger than the car!

oops (Oops), Friday, 16 January 2004 06:09 (twenty-two years ago)

THAT is hilarious.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 16 January 2004 06:11 (twenty-two years ago)

That guy gets a lot of play, I guarantee it.

Colin Saunders (csaunders), Friday, 16 January 2004 06:20 (twenty-two years ago)

He's a biter, not a fighter.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 16 January 2004 06:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I bet this guy is a good friend of his:
http://personalpages.tds.net/~interlocutor/hooray.jpg

Is that the lost product of Van Halen/Bertinelli?

Kim (Kim), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 01:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, I think it's the flying dog from 'Never Ending Story' or a recent picture of Limahl.

one thing i've never understood re: friendster messages. i get an alert in my yahoo account ("you have a new friendster message from xxx") but nothing shows up in my friendster messages. i've tried logging out and back in, clearing my temp cache, multiple refreshing... nothing. kinda sucky.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 23 August 2015 01:49 (ten years ago)

Yeah. And he really does get the credit for shifting the Internet from aliases to real names (present company excepted).
