TS: Home and Away v Neighbours

let us discuss this matter of grave importance

j0e (j0e), Friday, 29 August 2003 11:00 (twenty-two years ago)

So anyway - I'm presently leaning towards H&A. Firstly, Morag is back (surely she is the greatest soap opera character EVAH) and I've never been able to forgive Neighbours for axing my fantasy mum Pam Willis.

j0e (j0e), Friday, 29 August 2003 11:00 (twenty-two years ago)

also surely dr karl and headteacher susan are the most poorly-paid professionals ever, seeing as though the cabbie and crimper next door can afford a bigger house

j0e (j0e), Friday, 29 August 2003 11:01 (twenty-two years ago)

No no no. Neighbours has a kind of warmth to it that I love to have encircling me. Also, Darcy getting his comeuppance and Toady and Dee getting back together - swoon!

Mark C (Mark C), Friday, 29 August 2003 11:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Is Toady still in it? He is the Chris Moyles of antipodean drama.

j0e (j0e), Friday, 29 August 2003 11:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Other than a fleeting resemblance to Moyles, he is nothing like him. Toady is the Larry of our generation. Um, Joe, if you don't know who's even in Neighbours, it's hardly a fair TS, is it?

Mark C (Mark C), Friday, 29 August 2003 11:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Those of us without the luxury of Channel 5 can only dimly remember H&A *sniffle* and so can't really comment. Also I don't finish work until Neighbours is finished. So in other words, get off the thread, Rachel.

Archel (Archel), Friday, 29 August 2003 11:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Morag is back? no way. I get to see Neighbours from a treadmill and Home & Away only if I am so comatose on a Saturday that the omnibus seems a good idea. Neighbours is way better. more humour + people are nicer to each other.

Emma, Friday, 29 August 2003 11:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Um oops I meant to prefix my question with a "why". He is lairy and annoying

j0e (j0e), Friday, 29 August 2003 11:23 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah morag is back to return to deal with alf's alzheimers. yes neighbours does make home and away look gritty but I find all their recent characters weak - bring back the madges and joe mangels

j0e (j0e), Friday, 29 August 2003 11:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Boyd will be first against the wall. teenagers are rubbish.

Emma, Friday, 29 August 2003 11:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Alf has alzheimers? I'd like to see a scene where he forgets the meaning of the word 'drongo'... so laden of pathos a nation of students would be reduced to tears.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 29 August 2003 11:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Quit messing around the...eh.....that club with the boards and the waves.

Morag was the kind of satan woman wasn't she, did they invent that name for her. Neighbours is way better, it's wacky and the worst thing that ever happens is a prowler upsets the bins and is later adopted.

I am all about the Hollyoaks these days though, it is even easier to watch and obviously the beautifal woman quotient is through the roof.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 29 August 2003 12:12 (twenty-two years ago)

beautiful even.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 29 August 2003 12:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I never get to see Neighbours or Home & Away any more, but when I did, it was Neighbours all the way. This is back in the days of the Alessi twins, Joe Mangel, Bouncer having dreams, Doug Willis and Jim Robinson's mushroom-induced hallucinations, Harold's disappearance, Kylie & Jason etc etc etc. Oh, and Clive ruled. Totally.

Bobby's face appearing in Ailsa's fridge just couldn't compete. I did have a supremely large crush on Alan Fisher for a while, but I was young. I actually quite liked it back in the day, but there was also something that little bit more watchable about Neighbours.

However, DESTROY Home & Away for years of "witty" people asking how Alf is every time I tell them what my name is.

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 29 August 2003 12:35 (twenty-two years ago)

yes the hallucinations, oh that was a golden age!

Do you remember the CURSED ROCK!

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 29 August 2003 12:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Ooh Alan Fisher. Didn't he have a brain aneurysm or something when he was running down the beach? I liked him.

Emma, Friday, 29 August 2003 12:55 (twenty-two years ago)

The CURSED ROCK was the worst Neighbours storyline ever. It sux0red.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 29 August 2003 12:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Matt have you no sense of humour, it even had weird didgeridoo noises.

I like the way Doug has been reincarnated as Joe. Did anyone else have mates who fancied Susan Kennedy? Ew.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 29 August 2003 12:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Susan Kennedy = k-ROWR.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 29 August 2003 13:00 (twenty-two years ago)

And then they all Des up...

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 29 August 2003 13:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I had a friend at university who fancied Karl Kennedy. Ew. I also had a (different) friend who fancied Tug from Home & Away. Ew to the nth degree.

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 29 August 2003 13:03 (twenty-two years ago)

btw, yes Alan Fisher had a brain aneurysm. He was a surfing guy, but not in the slacker Brad Willis way, in a running-about-in-sexy-tight-wetsuits-to-excite-hormonal-teenage-girls kind of way. He wrote a book about surfing, so he was a sensitive soul too. Bless.

The cursed rock so wasn't as good as Jim's mushroom trip when the dog turned into a pig and Doug's head went all weird. Or Bouncer's dream, where Bouncer was in a field with big plastic flowers that looked like the Magic Roundabout, dreaming about finding true dog-love.

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 29 August 2003 13:07 (twenty-two years ago)

oh - in a crossover with the Do You See response thread, Tad from Neighbours is now on 2 Pints of Lager.... as Louise's boyfriend. He has stupid facial hair.

Emma, Friday, 29 August 2003 13:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I have no recollection of Doug and Jim's mushroom trip or Bouncer's Dream. And now they will be forever denied me :(

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 29 August 2003 13:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, Hannah from Neighbours was also in Corrie, as I have just found out from the popular search engine Google.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 29 August 2003 13:09 (twenty-two years ago)

The hypnotic piano music they used for sad/scary scenes in Neighbours was great, I remember the Jim Robinson death episode.

I love when they ram in pop culture references.

I missed Bouncer's dream, it sounds amazing. Doug and Jim's trip was classic.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 29 August 2003 13:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I remember Tad and Paul talking about Mogwai on Neighbours. Mogwai!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 29 August 2003 13:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm sure Tad had Jaguar! I am not making this up. Tad was a hardcore Underground Resistance purist.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 29 August 2003 13:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Harold, meanwhile, was into religious deep house.

(sorry I've plunged this into studentism)

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 29 August 2003 13:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, Hannah was Les Battersby's lodger for a while, she played a backpacker over for the Commonwealth Games.

Also, as mentioned elsewhere, Jim Robinson was the Vice-Pres in 24, and some diplomat/goverment official type in the West Wing. Jesse Spencer (Billy Kennedy) was in the PD James murder mystery thing at the weekend, and has grown up to be as rowr as his youthful good looks would have indicated.

Frente played a gig in Home and Away organised by Angel. Weren't the Pet Shop Boys in Neighbours once? Or have I totally made that up?

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 29 August 2003 13:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, can anyone confirm whether or not Terence Donovan (AKA Doug Willis and Jason's dad) is dead?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 29 August 2003 13:21 (twenty-two years ago)

He doesn't have a date of death on imdb so probably not.

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 29 August 2003 13:26 (twenty-two years ago)

yes the pet shop boy who isn't neil tennant drove up ramsay street in an mr2 and asked annalise or some other sarky-looking bint for directions to a recording studio. and clive james was in it as a postman

I have friends that fancy Susan Kennedy. I have heard her described as "the Australian Catherine Deneuve".

Yay Morag though for pure soap evilness. And Irene "when I was on the grog" Roberts.

j0e (j0e), Friday, 29 August 2003 13:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Have we all seen the xxx Sally Fletcher video thats doing the rounds?

j0e (j0e), Friday, 29 August 2003 13:37 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, she always seemed like such a nice girl

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 29 August 2003 13:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I wonder if any other australian soap stars have made forays into the hardcore.

j0e (j0e), Friday, 29 August 2003 13:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I heart Angel. She was great in Roar, and had a lovely cameo in The Limey. Not seen the lesbian snog in Mulholland Drive yet.

I admit it. I visited her fan site. I couldn't help it. She's lovely.

Dave B (daveb), Friday, 29 August 2003 13:46 (twenty-two years ago)

She (Melissa George) was also in Friends playing one of Ross and Rachel's nanny (i.e the one that wasn't Freddie Prinze Jr).

I wish I knew as much about other stuff as I do about crap on the telly. I would so win Telly Addicts if it was still on.

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 29 August 2003 13:53 (twenty-two years ago)

nanny = nannies obv.

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 29 August 2003 13:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Annalise was in Ally McBeal once, being sued for having big boobs or somesuch japery. Does anyone remember when Annalise was a poet for a bit? And composed such genius works as "Is She Stupid, Or Is She A Kid?" which was written about Danni Stark because Danni was lusting after Annalise's then-boyf Mark. It went something like:

Is she stupid, or is she a kid?
If she carries on being stupid I could run her over in my car and make a skid.

She roooled innit.

Alex in Rotherham (Alex in Doncaster), Friday, 29 August 2003 13:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, Danni Stark had diabetes for about three episodes and then it was totally forgotten about, so you kept seeing her eating and drinking all the stuff she had been warned off in the "this is how we deal with diabetes, kids" episode.

Annalise's sister was the most annoying woman on television.

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 29 August 2003 14:05 (twenty-two years ago)

One day soon Marlene will come back from her cruise and find out that her daughter is dead.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 29 August 2003 14:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I seem to remember that Annalise's mum was vaguely instrumental in Jim's death. But I think Jim wanted to die because Julie was his daughter.

Alex in Rotherham (Alex in Doncaster), Friday, 29 August 2003 14:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Annalise also had a poem about a tea-bag that brett and dani's band turned into a song and performed it on the pavement outside her house when annalise was at her lowest ebb

ten points to whoever can remember the name of said band

also I liked it when they replaced mattress-back cheryl for a fortnight but swapped the actresses over mid-scene

j0e (j0e), Friday, 29 August 2003 14:11 (twenty-two years ago)

isn't Angel going to be in the US version of Coupling?

j0e (j0e), Friday, 29 August 2003 14:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Also: extremely good point Matt, when Cheryl popped clogs she and Lou had split up and Lou had left for a bit and he blundered in during her wake and said "Hahahahaha who's died? hahahahaha" which was PURE CLASS.

Alex in Rotherham (Alex in Doncaster), Friday, 29 August 2003 14:13 (twenty-two years ago)

When Julie fell off that big building, we videoed it and had a Julie-falling-off-a-building party with lots of alcohol and cheering (students, huh?). She may actually surpass Annalise's annoyingly perky sister as one of the most irritating people on telly.

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 29 August 2003 14:17 (twenty-two years ago)

!!!!!!

I'd missed that.

Not enough Joe Mangel love on here, surely the greatest Neighbours character ever? Mark Little made a speech at Glasto a few years back about human rights abuses in South America or something, but it completely backfireed as no one was listening to anything he said, rather they were all standing there going "ey! It's Joe Mangel!" to their mates and txting frantically.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 29 August 2003 14:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Julie dressing up as a schoolgirl to solve Phil's erectile problems, classic or dud?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 29 August 2003 14:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Dud. Ew. Ew. Ew. One, because it was Julie, and two, who the hell would want to have sex with Phil Martin?

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 29 August 2003 14:20 (twenty-two years ago)

mmmmmm did they get it on whilst phil was wearing that plastic tracksuit that marlene wickedly sold him, telling him that it would help him sweat off those extra pounds?

apparently one of the lucy robinsonses real name was kylie wylie

j0e (j0e), Friday, 29 August 2003 14:22 (twenty-two years ago)

julie was such a horrible cow

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 29 August 2003 14:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Better than Ruth Martin, though, whose wardrobe appeared to have been purchased in bulk from Mothercare.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 29 August 2003 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Joe, you're just lying. The first Lucy Robinson was called Kylie Flinker.

My then-girlfriend had a real crush on Phil Martin.

Mark C (Mark C), Friday, 29 August 2003 14:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I seem to remember that Annalise's mum was vaguely instrumental in Jim's death

Jim's death allowed Annalise's mum to nick all his shares and transfer the money into her account (or at least try to - can't remember if she succeeded).

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 29 August 2003 14:28 (twenty-two years ago)

And any love for Joe Mangel disappeared when he hooked up with Kerry Bishop. I mean anyone stupid enough to get shot by pretending to be a duck during a duck shoot is just wrong.

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 29 August 2003 14:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Joe, Angel is in the US version of Coupling. Have you visited her site to find that out?

Dave B (daveb), Friday, 29 August 2003 14:30 (twenty-two years ago)

She wasn't pretending to be a duck, she was walking through the swamp snivelling. Doesn't mean she didn't deserve it, mind.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 29 August 2003 14:30 (twenty-two years ago)

In order that the balance be redressed, I would just like to mention Steven Matheson's memories of his house burning down in Home & Away every year when one of the four million foster kids had a birthday and a candle-festooned cake was put in front of him.

Also John Farnham serenaded Sally when she was in her bed ill and missed his gig.

(x-post - I didn't actually see Kerry's demise, I was unreliably informed that she had been running about a swamp with a duck whistle to piss off duck hunters. Bah.)

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 29 August 2003 14:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Ailsa, can I just have YOU on my telly from 5.35 to 6pm every day? You're much more entertaining than the real thing. (Actually make it a bit later as I won't be back from work.) Thanks.

Archel (Archel), Friday, 29 August 2003 14:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Susan Kennedy = k-ROWR.

So OTM it isn't even funny. Neighbours wins for a million reasons, squarepusher references being only one of them.

Matt (Matt), Friday, 29 August 2003 21:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I always wanted Karl and Susan to be my parents, cause they had good banter.
DEATH to libby.
I was sad when her husband died tho, he was like the human equivalent to oatmeal.

Nellie (nellskies), Saturday, 30 August 2003 05:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I love how almost no one Australian has posted on this thread, heh.

Old H&A stars dont die, they just end up in the Matrix films. There are more ex H&A stars in the Matrix (and Dark City) than you can poke several sticks at. Quite amusing really.

Have you lot got up to the daft Afro Harold storyline yet? I havent been watching Neighbours for some months now. I stopped watchinh H&A years ago but then Nalini got me back into it argh.

Trayce (trayce), Saturday, 30 August 2003 06:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I love how almost no one Australian has posted on this thread, heh.

Well, here's the first. Neighbours is much better. Teenagers are allowed to be themselves and make mistakes on Neighbours, whereas Home and Away is all about bringing naughty kids into line, or at least it used to be when I watched it. Also, I taught literary theory to the actress who went on to play Ruth Martin in Neighbours. I like to think I subtly influenced her portrayal.

Angus Gordon (angusg), Saturday, 30 August 2003 07:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I had a friend at university who fancied Karl Kennedy.

oooh! He is sort of cute!

phil-two (phil-two), Saturday, 30 August 2003 13:15 (twenty-two years ago)

One day soon Marlene will come back from her cruise and find out that her daughter is dead.

Neighbours is so wonderfully messy. So many plot holes - why do the characters who went away to college/find a job/go travelling never come back and visit their families. I stopped watching for a few months due to daytime commitments and when I come back, the Scully's have suddenly got a new son! I was always under the impression that the Scully's had begotten but three daughters, but no! Out of nowhere some dude turns up because he was "playing football in England" for about four years without anyone knowing. No-one seems to have pointed out that he must have been about 14 when he left, which is quite young to fuck off for so long and never come and visit.

dog latin (dog latin), Saturday, 30 August 2003 13:41 (twenty-two years ago)

No, the Scullys' son has always existed, he even came home for a visit once (although played by a different actor). The real puzzle is how the Scullys have managed to give birth to a New Zealander.

Angus Gordon (angusg), Saturday, 30 August 2003 15:45 (twenty-two years ago)

KARL KENNEDY THE MOST AMAZING MAN IN THE WORLD

minna (minna), Saturday, 30 August 2003 16:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Stefan Dennis is apparently now starring in a scottish soap opera. 'River City'

Gordon B, Saturday, 30 August 2003 16:42 (twenty-two years ago)

five months pass...
Revive! I love this thread.

So what's happening in Neighbours these days? I heard Toady accidentally killed his wife on their wedding day. Tsk, that hapless fule, when will he ever learn?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 20 February 2004 12:10 (twenty-two years ago)

The Scullys son played for West Ham! You used to hear them going on about The Hammers all the time. He probably took Anton Ferdinand on his first coke bender.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 20 February 2004 12:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I occasionally catch bits of Neighbours and the best recent news is that Des & Daphne's son has returned and he is all grown up (way to make me feel old). Also Karl is an alcoholic, Stuart was involved with some bizarre cult and Lou is marrying Nina's mum Trixie.

Emma, Friday, 20 February 2004 12:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Does Jamie Clarke have his dad's ears? If not, they missed out on a masterful bit of casting there.

I can't believe I can remember the name of Des and Daphne's baby after 16 years.

We must be on course for a full on Neighbours second generation by now. How long before Sky Mangel appears?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 20 February 2004 12:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Are you kidding? She's been back for ages! She represents the alternative lifestyle and has been going out with Boyd. She constantly berates him for his conventional ways and was tragically locked in a portaloo which was then tipped over the Formal (dance thing) by mean In Crowd girlies. Also appearing is Harold's son David who has gone bankrupt and his kerrazy wife whose name I forget (she is Karl's new receptionist) and his daughter Serena or Selena who is the same age as Sky and desperate to get into the In Crowd who are harassing her cousin.

Emma, Friday, 20 February 2004 12:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the way this thread took just one minute to summon Emma back to the board.

This sounds amazing. I need to take a week off work just for this purpose. I remember Harold's son from a cameo appearance years ago when he was trying it on with Jane/Charlene/Bronwyn/whoever the totty was in those days. He used the line "hey there... I'm a really cool dud". It was great.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 20 February 2004 12:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Sky Mangel was the ugliest child ever to appear on television. They kept her in a cupboard under the stairs and only let her out every six months or so! If she is back she must be serious maladjusted...

smee (smee), Friday, 20 February 2004 12:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Friday afternoon + soaps + about to leave job = instant delurk. Considering what a revoltingly ugly baby Sky was she has turned out OK and even bears a passing resemblance to Kerry. Apart from the blue streaks in her hair.

Emma, Friday, 20 February 2004 12:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Sky Mangel

Best site ever, by the way.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 20 February 2004 12:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I heard a story the other day about how a groups of lads were on a tour of the Neighbours set in Melbourne and they spotted Harold. One of them shouted, "Oi Harold, why are you such a fat bastard?!" Quick as a flash, Harold said back, "Because every time I fucked your mum she gave me a biscuit". Best. Comeback. Ever.

Also, anyone else know that the actress who plays Sky is Jason Donavon's half-sister?

Nick H (Nick H), Friday, 20 February 2004 12:46 (twenty-two years ago)

(yes, the person who did the Sky biography on the site Matt linked to.)

Emma, Friday, 20 February 2004 12:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Has Alf gotten his memory back yet? Does he call everyone a 'galah'? And does he realise he is in fact, in Geena Davis in the Long Kiss Goodnight, he had a former life? He was the evil terrorist kidnapper Jeff Butler who cause Jim Fletcher's wife and kids to die in Prisoner and causing him to later unlock the door of Meg's passion which turned her ito a raving nympho who shagged all the men who ever appeared in the show apart from Harold Bishop, who is beyond shagging.

Search: Lance and Martin in H&A; the drama of the first few episodes with the handbrake incident causing the Headmaster to go lu-la and then a reclusive menko. The building of the Sands resort to provide more interior locations but it was all a plot to get Ruth back I think. The Sands= Home and Away's Dagmar.

Also, The moment when Jane got as makeover. This was the talk of the playground the next day and for a few days after I can tell you. All the lads were mightily impressed with her new look.

That Harold story is allso a commonly used anti-sledge in cricket; I think Shane Warne uses it a lot.

Dave B (daveb), Friday, 20 February 2004 12:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Sonia's Valentine makeover last week reminded me of Jane's... she was magically transformed into a fox by, er, scrunching her hair. or so we were meant to gather from Martin's 'delighted' reaction.

Emma, Friday, 20 February 2004 13:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Lance still turns up in Home and Away because he's Collen's son. He has an evil wife who wants Colleen's fortune to build a house for them, not her.

Summer Bay is currently plagued by alcoholic Kit whose liver is about to pack in and she's in hospital, raving (in a mad way, not in a music 'n' dancing way). Alf can see into the future. Unfortunately, Ailsa has disappeared again.

AND PLEASE, SOMEBODY GIVE SEB SOME LIP BALM

Madchen (Madchen), Friday, 20 February 2004 13:16 (twenty-two years ago)

They've been doing the 'bring-back-all-the-old-cast-for-small-cameo-appearances' in Home&Away. Lance and Martin have both shown their faces recently, Blake and his girlfriend, Ailsa of course as Alf's madness incarnation, Carly, Frank, Stephen.

If at 6pm BBC2 continue showing the same tired old episodes of The Simpsons, or even worse half assed quiz shows that get aired once and are never seen again, I shall have to start watching H&A more often.

I've been watching Neighbours but I am struggling to remember which one Jamie is ..?

Ste (Fuzzy), Friday, 20 February 2004 13:19 (twenty-two years ago)

(and xpose, obv)

Ste (Fuzzy), Friday, 20 February 2004 13:20 (twenty-two years ago)

(xposT even)

Ste (Fuzzy), Friday, 20 February 2004 13:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Jamie was discovered lurking in a caravan and when whoever it was that found him hit upon his true identity, he told him that there is a lot of money waiting for him locked in Karl & Susan's attic (something like this only along the lines of bonds or shares or what have you). I was so stunned at his appearance I had a coughing fit.

Emma, Friday, 20 February 2004 13:25 (twenty-two years ago)

In Eastenders, it looks like Patrick and Yolande (Yooolaaaaandeee) are about to do a Neighbours and take in a waifandstray who broke into their kitchen and bled all over the lino.

Madchen (Madchen), Friday, 20 February 2004 13:29 (twenty-two years ago)

It will all end in tears, this is EastEnders after all, and criminals are not easily rehabilitated once Helen Daniels discovers their artistic talent. Except Martin Fowler, obviously.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 20 February 2004 13:33 (twenty-two years ago)

is jamie the one who has just passed his exam? he's the only one i cant put to a family.

Ste (Fuzzy), Friday, 20 February 2004 13:36 (twenty-two years ago)

He is brand spanking new and has only just appeared as a minor plot line. He has floppy blond hair and is quite Boyd-esque which could cause confusion.

Emma, Friday, 20 February 2004 13:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I still haven't actually watched either of them properly for years. Though I did notice whilst channel-hopping the other day that Jesse (who I used to fancy back in the day, but had forgotten even existed) is back in Home and Away minus his flowing locks.

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 20 February 2004 20:28 (twenty-two years ago)

eleven months pass...
Best thread ever. I wish I was fat enough to use that biscuit line.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 20 January 2005 16:52 (twenty-one years ago)

i cannot fathom how it is that i never posted on this thread

Stevem On X (blueski), Thursday, 20 January 2005 16:56 (twenty-one years ago)

five words that guarantee H&A victory despite the mulitude of great things that occurred in Neighbours (which are also all countered by just two words*)

Bobby's face on a fridge

*Bouncer's dream

Stevem On X (blueski), Thursday, 20 January 2005 16:58 (twenty-one years ago)

OMG!

Does anyone remember the one with Lynns (soon-to-be-discovered-as) Mum's dogs?

Karl kneeling on the lawn shouting "Stellllaaaaaaa!"

Come on! Oh, and Neighbours, no question, really. It's like pop magic.

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Thursday, 20 January 2005 17:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean "at the time of episode was yet to be discovered as" Lynn's Mum. Phew.

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Thursday, 20 January 2005 17:03 (twenty-one years ago)

And the Ghost World story was so insane I had to phone my then-girlfriend to check it was happening, although seeing as she was half asleep she'd thought she'd dreamed it.

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Thursday, 20 January 2005 17:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Please explain the Ghost World story to someone who hasn't seen Neighbours in three years.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 20 January 2005 17:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Character called Sky, essentially the revelation for her boyfriend that everything she'd been doing and the way she'd been acting since she appeared on the show had been influenced by Ghost World (the film, rather than comic) and that all her talk of being original and herself was just her trying to emulate Enid.

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Thursday, 20 January 2005 17:18 (twenty-one years ago)

woah

Stevem On X (blueski), Thursday, 20 January 2005 17:19 (twenty-one years ago)

that's almost as good as the Corrie goths

Stevem On X (blueski), Thursday, 20 January 2005 17:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha! I just love that the Neighbours writers seem to reference everything they like.

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Thursday, 20 January 2005 17:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay that's bonkers. Especially as Sky's mother was a hippy and got shot by duck hunters at a protest so all this non-comformist stuff was totally believable.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 20 January 2005 17:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh it was, she was just trying too hard. It wasn't written very well, but it was getting at something fairly interesting. That and their reference points were top notch. I don't think she ever knew her Mum that well. That was classic too! I remember when she went in to the coffee shop with no shoes! OMG! Harold chucked a mental!

Writing Neighbours would be my dream job.

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Thursday, 20 January 2005 17:24 (twenty-one years ago)

At the moment, they seem to name check the Gyllenhaal's every episode.

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Thursday, 20 January 2005 17:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Skye and her lesbian pal seem to be the main conduit for the writers slipping in all of their favourite references.
Recent classics have been Kathy Acker ("You know who Kather Acker is?") and Peaches.

How long are they going to drag out the Karl and Izzy thing? When will they realise the child is not his? Will he flip when he finds out the truth? And what happened to Darcy? He was just in a coma and they seem to have forgotten about him. Maybe he'll reappear in good time and reveal all. They're so setting it up for Karl and Susan to get back together...

Remember a couple of years ago when that kid became a DJ (DJ Detonator) and you had all the hip-hop references? Apparently one of the writers was friends with the DJ from the Avalanches. Then you had Harold trying to get down and bust some rhymes. Comedy gold!

Another thing I love about Neighbours is that whenever someone has a party, the people at the party can hear each other over the music, yet all the other houses are kept up all night by the blare and have to shout over each other.

stew, Thursday, 20 January 2005 19:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh God I forgot the peaches thing!

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Thursday, 20 January 2005 19:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I managed to watch H&A today and to my amazement there wasn't ONE hospital scene!

Sky is looking fab these days, apart from the obvious clothing traits from her mother.

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 14:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh man, you guys wait til you see what happens with Izzy and Carl and... well, lets just say an old old Neighbours friend might be coming back to be a bastard to everyone...

Im actually enjoying it all again. And OMG, this will sound dumb, but - I did not twig that the Skye on there now is meant to be the same lil baby Skye who was the Mangel's kid way back when! How did I miss that!?

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 00:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm enjoying the anti-conformity thing that's going on in the 'bourghs just now. They must have got some cool writers in.

The recurring bits with Susan and Libby pretending they're not obsessed with some dodgy latin American soap is classic. How meta can you get?

stew, Wednesday, 26 January 2005 00:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Neighbours is awesome and I fancy Susan.

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 00:51 (twenty-one years ago)

And Libby, a little. But I didn't expect that.

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 00:52 (twenty-one years ago)

So you guys aren't yet up to the big major end of season finale yet I take it. Its a doozy this year. I wont spoil tho unless someone wants me to.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 04:32 (twenty-one years ago)

um, I don't mind?

Ste (Fuzzy), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 09:34 (twenty-one years ago)

OK....

***NEIGHBOURS SPOILERS LOOK AWAY NOW OMGWTF***

And who should come back to annoy everyone in Ramsey st...

It's PAUL ROBINSON! Nice move, very nice (or jumping of sharkish, I havent decided yet)

Oh god I watch Neighbours kill me now.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 09:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow that didnt do all the spaces I wanted it to, sorry.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 09:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah, us Scots have about the return of Paul Robinson since he left our native soap, River City, last year.

Home and Away has been borrowing plots left, right and centre recently. The headmaster got shot in the eye in a paintballing accident (Byker Grove), there's a family crisis over who will donate a kidney to Kirsty (Eastenders) and we also have a surrogacy plotline (Brookside).

Madchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 13:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Which current Neighbours folks would remember Paul/know who he is? do his twinwife and also her twin and also the triplets return also?

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 13:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Paul Robinson back in Neighbours? Don't that make you feel good?

muhahaha xpost

Ste (Fuzzy), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 13:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Des's's's's'-sex-face maybe a little wasted on Jim, there.

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 13:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Daphne looks wrong there

Stevem On X (blueski), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 13:49 (twenty-one years ago)

FUCK in re 'Ghost World' ect ect. I haven't seen Neighbours in like 7-8 years. It sounds menthol.

Miles Finch, Wednesday, 26 January 2005 13:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I hope Paul arrives back in the street driving his original red sports car

Ste (Fuzzy), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 13:55 (twenty-one years ago)

A girl I went to school with had a coiffeur disaster - she asked to have it cut spikey on top and a bit longer at the back, "like Daphne on Neighbours". Apparently the hairdresser didn't watch Neighbours, so Heather came out grade twoed with a thin curtain of hair around the back of the neck. As if that wasn't bad enough, a few days later she was going into the changing rooms in Chelsea Girl when she heard a voice behind her... "sorry, no boys allowed in there".

Madchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 13:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Stefan Dennis was voted the worst ever soap pop star in the OMM a few months ago.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 14:23 (twenty-one years ago)

three weeks pass...
Revive, because I forgot to tell the non-aussies what happened in Neighbours the other week.

OK so Stefan Dennis is back as Paul Robinson right, and he's being an evil conniving so and so, but everyone is falling for it except for Carl!

So what do they do? They have a scene where Carl goes to the mens, and there is Paul, OMGWTF... so they have a PISSING CONTEST. Paul pissed louder. And scowled a lot.

I almost died laughing.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 17 February 2005 07:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Neighbours sucks balls. Summer Bay fo' life.

kate/papa november (papa november), Thursday, 17 February 2005 07:23 (twenty-one years ago)

No way man! Thems fightin' words!

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 17 February 2005 07:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Heh, actually I don't watch either. I was just trying to stir you up :)

kate/papa november (papa november), Thursday, 17 February 2005 07:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I love the connoisseur approach to these shows exhibited here. I always preferred Neighbours because Home & Away is too dominated by fourteen yr olds w/ relationship problems (ha ha maybe I just envy their precociousness). And better pop culture references on Neighbours, yeah.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 17 February 2005 12:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Sky was reading Don DeLillo the other day and she made a comic for that fanny ex boyf of hers.

And that band Izzy and Karl went to see (it is Karl - remember when his commie dad used to appear and take Billy to the Trotskyist pub? And his dad's horse was called Castro of course), the Warm Umbrellas - are they real?

stew, Thursday, 17 February 2005 14:34 (twenty-one years ago)

what the hell?!?!?! paul robinson is back!?

im still trying to deal with how irritating stingrays mum is.

neighbours is actualyl scientifically worse than home and away, i decided a long time ago but cant remember why, but i prefer neighbours.

i think H&A is more gripping and better written, but neighbours is easier on the viewer. easier to drop out of and pick up again. i always watch it doing something else though , icouldnt just watch it straight thru, toom nay boring discussions and crine worthy scenes....eg "Luka is you brother!" etc.

ambrose (ambrose), Thursday, 17 February 2005 14:42 (twenty-one years ago)

three weeks pass...
It's begun! As Lassiters burns to the ground the crowd look on, joined by a familiar face in black.
Obv it was him that started the fire...but why? Insurance scam? Revenge?

Oh, and Steph is obviously going to be accused of smothering the grandad.

stew, Thursday, 10 March 2005 14:09 (twenty-one years ago)

wha? was this last night, damn i missed it. something to look forward to tonight.

Ste (Fuzzy), Thursday, 10 March 2005 14:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh my god. I wish I was at home to see this.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 10 March 2005 14:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I am off sick and I didn't watch it! Luckily I will be able to see the repeat this evening.

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 10 March 2005 15:09 (twenty-one years ago)

so was this the lunchtime episide? oh shit I think i just spoiled it then for my work colleagues.

Ste (Fuzzy), Thursday, 10 March 2005 15:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I am so watching this this evening.

Matt (Matt), Thursday, 10 March 2005 15:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Looks like i'll have torrent this.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Thursday, 10 March 2005 15:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Special effects budget spent for another year. And PAUL ROBINSON!

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 10 March 2005 17:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Was anyone killed??

Parky, Thursday, 10 March 2005 18:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Whatever happened to the Sands Resort? Does Harold die? That'll learn him for sacking Erica from Wentworth.

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 10 March 2005 18:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh My God!

I have to wtach Neighbours tomorrow!

My life has been generally more empty since I stopped watching it.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 10 March 2005 18:40 (twenty-one years ago)

did Cindy and 'the copper' die ?

hurrah for Paul Robbo'

Ste (Fuzzy), Thursday, 10 March 2005 18:41 (twenty-one years ago)

It's all a bit cliffhanger-ish. No-one KNOWS who's dead. Except for the old dude, he's dead, but that was unrelated to the fire. Nice use of black and white film for the old "life flashing before your eyes" thing - Neighbours is all about the dream sequences. I bet they HATED it when Home & Away did it better with Bobby's head in Ailsa's fridge door.

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 10 March 2005 19:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm setting the dvd recorder!

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 10 March 2005 19:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Suspects for starting the fire - seems a no brainer, cos the figure with the matches was all in black and Paul Robinson turned up wearing a black turtle neck sweater, the classic sneaky criminal get up.
However...the mental bloke is gonna be a suspect, as is Luka, who's gone missing and has a history of arson...

God, being unemployed does terrible things to a man. Like turning him into a Neighbours addict...

stew, Thursday, 10 March 2005 19:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha oh wow you guys aren't as far behind as I thought.

We're a couple months ahead of you and as far as I can tell they still dont know for sure who started the fire, or if they do I missed it somehow. Lots of police interregations, conniving schemes, affairs and drama to come yet!

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 10 March 2005 22:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Also that copper, Stuart - did you know he was one of our Big Brother finalists, and unknown before that?

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 10 March 2005 23:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I was not aware of that.

stew, Thursday, 10 March 2005 23:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Trayce, who died in the fire?

Parky, Thursday, 10 March 2005 23:32 (twenty-one years ago)

***SPOILER, AVAST YE EYES IF YOU DONT WANT TO KNOW YET****

...

...

... only the old mad guy who everyone hated anyway. Stu and dippy blonde girly got out ok, but Stu goes legally blind from his injuries, so theres a whole rather tedious "coping with it and being an angry git" storyline for that coming up.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 10 March 2005 23:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Neighbours because Barry Crocker used to sing the theme tune.

Sasha (sgh), Friday, 11 March 2005 01:55 (twenty-one years ago)

God I havent heard that original version in aeons :) It was so dinky and cheesy, with that "bu-NUMP!" fat synth bassline thing.

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 11 March 2005 02:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Bobby's head in Ailsa's fridge door.

Okay, you REALLY have to explain this.

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Friday, 11 March 2005 02:33 (twenty-one years ago)

so did anyone see this at lunchtime? is it worth me turning my stereo off just to watch it again? Or can I get by with being entertained by just looking at the visuals?

Ste (Fuzzy), Friday, 11 March 2005 16:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Ailsa (character in Home and Away, not me) went mental and started hallucinating that Bobby Simpson was giving her advice. This manifested itself in Bobby's head morphing out of Ailsa's fridge door. That is all. There must be photos somewhere on the interweb, I shall go look...

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 11 March 2005 16:28 (twenty-one years ago)

The fire rages!

Glum faces!

jel -- (jel), Friday, 11 March 2005 17:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Karl is wearing his mid-lfe crisis leather jacket.

I like Steph's hair. Is she a killer?

jel -- (jel), Friday, 11 March 2005 17:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Toady is losing his rag!

There is an old couple, I dunno who they are. One of them kinda looks Dame Judy Dench.

Karl can't sign the death certificate!

jel -- (jel), Friday, 11 March 2005 17:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Euthansia?

Where is Paul Robinson? I'm only watching coz of him.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 11 March 2005 17:43 (twenty-one years ago)

No sign of Cindy and Stu.

The Scully's kitchen has been done up.

Steph accused!!!

jel -- (jel), Friday, 11 March 2005 17:44 (twenty-one years ago)

A body is found!

Looks grim!

jel -- (jel), Friday, 11 March 2005 17:46 (twenty-one years ago)

That kinda contravines Health and Safety letting Toadie into the burnt out building like that?

jel -- (jel), Friday, 11 March 2005 17:47 (twenty-one years ago)

NOT THE COFFEE SHOP TOO?

NOOOOOOOoooooo!

jel -- (jel), Friday, 11 March 2005 17:48 (twenty-one years ago)

ROBBO!!!

yay!!

jel -- (jel), Friday, 11 March 2005 17:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Steph didn't do it, I can't believe that. The death isn't straight-forward though. Pillow fibres in the lungs.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 11 March 2005 17:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Robbo's been in prison. He's a better man now. Hmmm, "proerty developer" huh? Dodgy!

jel -- (jel), Friday, 11 March 2005 17:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Cindy is alive!

property developer, I mean

Stuart's okay too (but we knew that)

jel -- (jel), Friday, 11 March 2005 17:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Lynne has her doubts re: steph!

She needs a good lawyer. Toadie is never out-of-work!

jel -- (jel), Friday, 11 March 2005 17:55 (twenty-one years ago)

"I'm trapped in the celler"

-end credits-

jel -- (jel), Friday, 11 March 2005 17:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Stuart might not be OK! Sindy's mobile picks a REALLY shitty time to run out of batteries! Wooh! Exciting! Did Paul explain what had happened with whichever Alessi he ended up with?

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 11 March 2005 17:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the Alessi's will be fogotten about. Unless it's them who really started the fire!!!!

jel -- (jel), Friday, 11 March 2005 18:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe she knew Paul was coming back and Christina/Caroline hoped she would kill him for being in jail, except it went all wrong (I can't remember if that's even their names or which one he married) because he wasn't in the pub at the time.

(note: this seems to be deeply implausible. However, it is Neighbours).

Hey! Maybe it was Karl Kennedy in his mid-life-crisis black clothes!

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 11 March 2005 18:03 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, it must've been Karl! It's too obvious for it be Paul. I mean by Monday Lou and Harold will be accusing him I reckon.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 11 March 2005 18:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe it was Toadie and it all went wrong and that's why he was so desperate to go into the building and make amends!

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 11 March 2005 18:11 (twenty-one years ago)

If it does turn out to be Robbo, I'm never going to watch Neighbours again.

oh and Paul Robinson has lost a leg!

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 16:21 (twenty years ago)

MRS MANGLE IS STILL ALIVE! (albeit off-camera)

Annalise showed her film - cameo appearances aplenty! Hannah & Debbie Martin, Brett & Debbie Stark, Marlene, Ruth, GAIL ROBINSON!, Hilary, one of the Ramseys, Melanie, Billy, and a host of others. Plus! A bonus addition in the form of Sarah, who blew Doctor Kennedy a kiss - needless to say Susan was pissed (although still jubilant from the IZZY TAKEDOWN of yesterday).

Oh, and in INSANE BABY NEWS, Steph got thrown off the adoption list forever for being very dumb,

According to my sister, Joe is hanging around, so hurrah!

carson dial (carson dial), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 16:26 (twenty years ago)

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 17:55 (twenty years ago)

just the concept of *recording* Neighbours fills me with mirth. Mind you, it's probably not as funny as the fact that for half a second, I considered whether or not I might purchase A DVD OF THE THING!

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 18:24 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, but the idea of Doug and Gail and Annalise reminds me of a time when I didn't have to record Neighbours because I didn't have a job and nostalgia is a great thing.

Why don't they do an omnibus? Am I going to have to wait for it to turn up on UK Gold in about four years?

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 18:52 (twenty years ago)

no need for uk gold

annalise looked awful!

i wanna see lance again!

and can we see tad, toadie and stonefish all together? that would be the best thing.
