ok how come on the what do you look/sound like threads whenever some girl meekly posts her picture or voice theres always a thousand guys telling hercreepy things she looks like ("ilx girl xxx, you look kinda like the girl from sleater kinney crossed with winona ryder :-)") and then feels the need to always end paranthetically with 'and thats a good thing', like is the girl reading it is gonna be all like, that cock!! that bastard fucker!! oh wait a minute, hold the fucking phone, a GOOD thing?? yo i think i'll touch his penis now!!

trife (simon_tr), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 23:57 (twenty-two years ago)

gee trife you look kinda like the 'nerdy' girl from tv show/movie xxx (thats a good thing)

trife (simon_tr), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 23:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe if you had a little more personality and intelligence you would have more admirers and less envy, did you think about that?

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 18 September 2003 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

ally your bitterness makes you sound kinda like maggie glyllanhall

trife (simon_tr), Thursday, 18 September 2003 00:01 (twenty-two years ago)

(thats a etc)

trife (simon_tr), Thursday, 18 September 2003 00:02 (twenty-two years ago)

trife you sound like Albert Rosenfeld

http://www.cenedra.com/twinpeaks/chara/albert.jpg

(that's a good thing)

Herbstmute (Wintermute), Thursday, 18 September 2003 00:04 (twenty-two years ago)

oh fuck off trife. I mean really: what's your point? that everyone else is a shlub? Fine. I am. Deal with it.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 18 September 2003 00:07 (twenty-two years ago)

when will one of the thats-a-good-thing posters come to this thread and defend their icky constantly-repeated phrase!!!

haha xpost!! ahh like creepy moths to a flame

trife (simon_tr), Thursday, 18 September 2003 00:09 (twenty-two years ago)

http://www.nhk.or.jp/sesame/muppets/muppets/oscar.gif

"shove it buddy"

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 18 September 2003 00:10 (twenty-two years ago)

hey wait that happened to me! and I totally, felt, like, well, um, nothing really. Thanks for the thought, though.

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 18 September 2003 00:11 (twenty-two years ago)

That's A Good Thing, new on Fox this Fall (finally a worthy vehicle for that sassy redhead out of Suddenly Susan)

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 18 September 2003 00:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude, I said it once! Because I mentioned teeny looked like someone who only I knew. Perfectly innocent remark. There are plenty more icky remarks that are made on those threads.

Trife: "Did ya ever notice eveyone on ILE posts like this?"

oops (Oops), Thursday, 18 September 2003 00:13 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah im not claiming any general offense, everyones reasons for being disgusted by ile may vary

trife (simon_tr), Thursday, 18 September 2003 00:13 (twenty-two years ago)

so, again, what's your fucking point? that you're creeped out by innoccuous off-hand remarks? Congratufuckinglations! Here's some licorice!

oops (Oops), Thursday, 18 September 2003 00:14 (twenty-two years ago)

You're just overreading, dude. Adding "that's a good thing," as long as you don't actually mean it's a bad thing, is standard. Maybe I think Ally looks like Moon Unit Zappa, but if I say that, there's a chance she hates Moon and is gonna throw something at me, so we've evolved the necessary disclaimer, because the guys who didn't all died of head injuries.

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 18 September 2003 00:15 (twenty-two years ago)

oops you kinda look like the reason i mostly stopped reading ile (thats a good thing)

trife (simon_tr), Thursday, 18 September 2003 00:17 (twenty-two years ago)

also i didnt imply it was anything but an 'innoccuous' trend, methinks..doth protesteth...etc

trife (simon_tr), Thursday, 18 September 2003 00:19 (twenty-two years ago)

i mean if you want here is a good place you can go harrass ppl with 'WHATS YOUR FUCKING POINT?!?!!?!': http://ilx.wh3rd.net/newanswers.php?board=1

trife (simon_tr), Thursday, 18 September 2003 00:20 (twenty-two years ago)

everything i say is intended to be insulting so i have no need for this phrase

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 18 September 2003 00:21 (twenty-two years ago)

(thats a good thing) vs (not that there's anything wrong with that) fite

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 18 September 2003 00:22 (twenty-two years ago)

trife you're kinda the reason i mostly stopped reading ILM
(hey, maybe if i post more you'll totally stop reading...also, for someone who doesn't read ILE, you sure seem to know all about our habits)

oops (Oops), Thursday, 18 September 2003 00:26 (twenty-two years ago)

dont have to read many thread to see theyre all identially overrun with homogenous bullshit

trife (simon_tr), Thursday, 18 September 2003 00:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Has anybody ever noticed on Scooby Doo it was like they were stoned all the time?? Hee hee....

My job totally sux, but I'll be FREE at 5:00! Livin' for the weekends, baby!

I wonder if rainbows go to a better place, and if I could follow them there...

xoxo to Oops *grin*

trife (simon_tr), Thursday, 18 September 2003 00:30 (twenty-two years ago)

hey trife, what's your job? i ask merely for information

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 18 September 2003 00:31 (twenty-two years ago)

life is homogenous bullshit. complaining about it just makes people hate you and you to hate yourself. have fun.

good thing your posts run the full gamut of human thought of emotions. you never know what to expect from trife!

oops (Oops), Thursday, 18 September 2003 00:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry Oops, I've been in a shitty mood today, I had to stand in line at the DMV for TWO FREAKIN' HOURS! I'm gonna go have some wine now and paaaar-tay!!

trife (simon_tr), Thursday, 18 September 2003 00:33 (twenty-two years ago)

what do you talk about with people IRL, trife?

oops (Oops), Thursday, 18 September 2003 00:35 (twenty-two years ago)

"There is nothing to say about anything. Therefore there is no limit to the number of books that can be written."

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 18 September 2003 00:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Oops I think it's really important to stay positive, negativity really gets me down in the dumps sometimes. I guess I wouldn't say I'm *religious*, but I'm definately a really spiritual person.

trife (simon_tr), Thursday, 18 September 2003 00:38 (twenty-two years ago)

trife i'm sorry i'm not minna enough for you to respond to my question

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 18 September 2003 00:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Richard, you look just like Pierce Brosnan when you smile!

kirsten (kirsten), Thursday, 18 September 2003 00:39 (twenty-two years ago)

dont have to read many thread to see theyre all identially overrun with homogenous bullshit

I think to arrive at that conclusion you would need to specifically read a very limited number of threads.

http://store6.yimg.com/I/ekay_1751_3007098

I thought this was going to be a Martha Stewart thread!

Nicolars (Nicole), Thursday, 18 September 2003 00:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Trife is the guy in the corner who doesn't fit in (that's a good thing) and therefore feels the need to mock and look down on everyone else. Talk about same old shit that's been done a million times before...

oops (Oops), Thursday, 18 September 2003 00:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Trife probably would get along with us very well should he stop attacking people. Even if you don't like the way people behave, that's no real reason to attack and belittle them. (especially on an Internet forum!)

Andrew (enneff), Thursday, 18 September 2003 00:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh hey ESOJ, I work in an accounting office of a web design firm. It's a stupid job sometimes but it's OK, like I always say, you don't have to be crazy to work there-- but it helps!! what do you do, ESOJ??

trife (simon_tr), Thursday, 18 September 2003 00:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Oops, did you study Psychology too? I just loooove Psychology, finding out how people work!! Sigmond Freud said sometimes a cigar is just a cigar, but I think in your case he probably meant a 11" Cuban one!!

trife (simon_tr), Thursday, 18 September 2003 00:46 (twenty-two years ago)

trife (just in case you actually wanted to know): i do QA for bank software. it's something i'm reasonably humourless about (in addition to everything else)

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 18 September 2003 00:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't understand why you're still here at all. We're all a bunch of mundane morons with subconscious prejudices. Isn't there a better--more beneficial to you and the rest of us--way to use your time? Can you not understand that not everyone is like you or wants to be?

oops (Oops), Thursday, 18 September 2003 00:47 (twenty-two years ago)

aw, thanks, kirsten!!

you know, you look just like audrey hepburn when I smile!!!

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 18 September 2003 00:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Oops I've decided to give up my old, bitter ways, and become part of ILE. I'm still allowed to be bitter about the DMV though, right? And those damned kids today!

trife (simon_tr), Thursday, 18 September 2003 00:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't understand the emotional investment people put into disliking this forum. Liking it, okay, I've never got into it to that extent but I understand that you can make wonderful friends online. Disliking it...why bother CARING?

Maria (Maria), Thursday, 18 September 2003 01:13 (twenty-two years ago)

MOON UNIT ZAPPA???????????????

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 18 September 2003 01:15 (twenty-two years ago)

This link is perfect for this thread.

Nicolars (Nicole), Thursday, 18 September 2003 01:17 (twenty-two years ago)

trife, you seem to suffer from the delusion that the more common an experience is, the lower it's value.
"haha! Other people have talked about this before. You guys are such morons for discussing it!!! You should check out this mix of Crizzy rap I made instead!!! Oh, by the way, I picked up on the inherent racism of what you guys are saying even though it doesn't exist outside of my own mind!!!"

oops (Oops), Thursday, 18 September 2003 01:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Ally,

THAT'S A GOOD THING!

I don't think you look like Moon Unit Zappa :) That's why I used it.

Ethan again magically channels my thoughts so I don't have to start a thread about this now...the DMV did indeed suck...thanks Ethan!

Vic, Thursday, 18 September 2003 01:32 (twenty-two years ago)

What's a DMV? *laughs*

Just Deanna (Dee the Lurker), Thursday, 18 September 2003 01:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Nicolars, I too was hoping this would be Martha thread.

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Thursday, 18 September 2003 01:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 18 September 2003 01:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Ethan, good thing or bad thing? I don't think they like me for my personality anymore :( :( :(

(I like how oops decides to be a dick to me because Ethan called him out, that's big, clever and it makes sense!)

(I guess in fairness I think this is the funniest fucking thread going)

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 18 September 2003 02:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Man, you plants just sit there and soak up the suns rays, photosynthesizing your days away. How fucking lame. And you Mr. Squirrel, I suppose you're gonna go gather some nuts, aren't you? Borrrring. It's been done and done again since the dawn of time...

(How was I a dick to you? If I was, I apologize. "Called out"--yeahhhh)

trife muir (Oops), Thursday, 18 September 2003 02:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Really. I have no clue what you're talking about, Ally.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 18 September 2003 02:15 (twenty-two years ago)

oops the homophobia thread already proved how highly you esteem 'natures way' over anything else

trife (simon_tr), Thursday, 18 September 2003 02:17 (twenty-two years ago)

The very fact that you call it 'the homophobia thread' shows that you don't understand what I was saying at all. No surprise there, punchy.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 18 September 2003 02:19 (twenty-two years ago)

i called it the homophobia thread because it was the thread where you defended your homophobia

trife (simon_tr), Thursday, 18 September 2003 02:20 (twenty-two years ago)

dude trife, you have mine and Tom's permissions to post this on every thread you don't like instead of arguing with anyone.

http://bitchcakes.topcities.com/turbonegro/millar.jpg

I have a whole collection of similar photos for your perusal, I'm pretty tempted to do this all the time myself so I've been in the process of uploading every photo ever taken of me or anyone I know flipping the bird! It's great!

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 18 September 2003 02:21 (twenty-two years ago)

though oops if you want to use this thread to explain to me how fags go against your precious laws of nature plz do

xpost wtf!!!

trife (simon_tr), Thursday, 18 September 2003 02:22 (twenty-two years ago)

You got me trife. Boy do I hate those sinful fags. Where do I go for re-programming?

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 18 September 2003 02:24 (twenty-two years ago)

So do you want to explain how I was a dick to you, Ally?

oops (Oops), Thursday, 18 September 2003 02:26 (twenty-two years ago)

haha it seems kind of self-explanatory when you click the link? maybe if I was more naked and/or I had my glasses on in the pic :( :( :(

and poor Eli! Frank Zappa! Bloody hell!

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 18 September 2003 02:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Those Sinful Fags' first album was epic but I gotta admit that after that they completely lost the plot

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 18 September 2003 02:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Ally, if you're actually upset about the Zappa thing, blame me for it -- I'm the one who used it as an example, and oops was just riffing on it, as far as I can tell.

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 18 September 2003 02:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I was SO not being a dick. Does that mean Tep was being a dick too? or just me cause you interpret everything I post through a veil of dickosity?

oops (Oops), Thursday, 18 September 2003 02:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I was enabling dick.

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 18 September 2003 02:34 (twenty-two years ago)

The Shithouse Emo Kids, on the other hand, have carefully developed their craft over the course of their three-album contract and word on the street is that the next one will break them through to that elusive Next Level

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Thursday, 18 September 2003 02:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Judd Nelson was pretty good in New Jack City

(Tep I'm actually just making fun of him for going onto the thread and doing exactly what Ethan said he does like ten minutes after this thread started)

(it's also not really funny and if we want to be honest about things, if I went onto the photo threads and followed everyone up with photos of people they don't care for, I'd be rightfully labelled a hobag bitch)

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 18 September 2003 02:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Reading this thread is like looking at that effect where you point a vid camera at a TV monitor and get repeated feedback.

Ow.

the cycle's come round quicker than usual

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 18 September 2003 02:44 (twenty-two years ago)

A lot of it's been compressed in the past some months; "ILE is too twee" comes round as "I'm creeped out and offended by ILE being twee," so you get the "it's too twee" and "it's too hostile" shitfans flying at once, and the room gets a bit messed up.

The hose'll be along directly, always is.

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 18 September 2003 02:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Ooh, This is good! Lamest thread ever BUT:

1. Trife hates people who are happy
2. Trife hates people who have friends
3. Trife should be the guy in the movies who starts off as a desperate loser and comes good, but hey, life isn’t like the movies.
4. Trife is black, yo, and don’t anyone think otherwise, understand? Otherwise he's going to thcwean and thulk until he gets his way.
5. Oops, man, you aren’t trying hard enough to get the misanthropic, shrivelled, sad little man the fuck out of ILE.

Actually, fuck this. Ethan, fuck you. Fuck off.

Mark C (Mark C), Thursday, 18 September 2003 12:09 (twenty-two years ago)

my favourite total misconception ever about trife is when dom called him "ivy league"

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 18 September 2003 12:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Where was this amazing stick-wrong-end-getting lunacy?

Ricardo (RickyT), Thursday, 18 September 2003 12:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm the Bill Hicks of the internet! Yay me!

faketrife (Nick A.), Thursday, 18 September 2003 12:37 (twenty-two years ago)

This thread is great.

Someone explain to me what is so different about this thread versus behaviour like this? Ethan's more direct? He's funny? He's a guy? He gives up on it after a day versus 6 months of it? Cos I'm failing to see the issue here that gets one person defended and the other person labelled a sad motherfucker with no friends...

(haha the funny thing is that this is the only time anyone replies to Ethan AT ALL, why does anyone think he's doing this? Ob. because he is a sad fucker with no friends versus you all are so easy to wind up)

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 18 September 2003 12:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm still laughing at Mark C's post though! That closing was so Grahamian.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 18 September 2003 12:39 (twenty-two years ago)

(btw mark c's 4 completely inverts trife's main and major irritation point about race, which is that cultural apartheid is a BAD THING) (i think trife sometimes sees arguments for CA where they don't intentionally exist, and overreacts accordingly, but he has also picked up lots on times when they do exist, subtly and destructively)

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 18 September 2003 12:39 (twenty-two years ago)

but wot about all the "james cunting blount" fun that's been had so far?

Kingfish (Kingfish), Thursday, 18 September 2003 12:41 (twenty-two years ago)

wtf? (nickalicious), Thursday, 18 September 2003 13:04 (twenty-two years ago)

also funny = this post of oops's:

'Trife: "Did ya ever notice eveyone on ILE posts like this?"'

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 18 September 2003 13:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Gillian Taylforth looks good these days.

Mark s, the whole race thing with trife is just a joke. It's become impossible to make a point on the subject, so I guess I'm mocking that as much as Ethan.

Ally, stop dragging things up after 6 months. We heard you already. ;)

(and that closing was trying to speak to Ethan in words he couldn't possibly find a subtext in which proves he's right. Or possibly I'm just descending to his level, whatever)

Mark C (Mark C), Thursday, 18 September 2003 13:17 (twenty-two years ago)

trife is more right on race than he is wrong

... (gareth), Thursday, 18 September 2003 13:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I heart the Trifester & think that it's pretty myopic to compare his version of the provocateur role with Calz's. Calz likes to ride the "if I'm getting on your nerves, it must MEAN SOMETHING" horse, but of course it means nothing since he lacks any debating skills/ideas/etc. That doesn't mean that that horse never rides, though, and in Ethan's case, his jabs in the ribs sometimes provoke thought, debate, introspection, etc. Also, his love of the music he loves brings me joy, even when I don't like said music i.e. the Bad Boy Records thread. However I will no longer go to bat for him until he buys, and says he likes it whether he does or not, the most recent KRS-One album.

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Thursday, 18 September 2003 13:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Slutty Momus

Kingfish (Kingfish), Thursday, 18 September 2003 14:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, er, if anyone misinterpreted me above, I was attempting to ask which thread Dom's massive-wrong-end-of-stick-getting lunacy was on, not asking what Mark C's misconception was. I thought the latter was kind of obvious if you'd been reading Ethan for any length of time.

Otherwise, yeah, what lido-boy says, and the idea of Mr I'm-Not-A-Homophobe-I-Just-Think-Gay-Sex-Is-Wrong being held up as someone who should administer the old logistical beatdown on Trife is very odd indeed.

Ricardo (RickyT), Thursday, 18 September 2003 14:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I am clearly a horrible person because of it but Ethan's ILE parodies above gave me my biggest laugh of the day.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 18 September 2003 15:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm pretty horrible too.

Trife's posts were like a cross between Kool Keith and Jonathan Swift (and that's a good thing) ;-)

more pics of people flipping off the camera, please.

I didn't know Ethan before trife, but yeah I thought this post was hilarious. No harm no foul, just a bit of fun! This kind of meta commentary happens all the time around here. I can't imagine getting worked up to a Mark C level about it. Also, trife should have titled it 'This is the thread about (that's a good thing)' and included some "would-be absurdism", for maximum annoyance value.

For my money, praising Trife with reservations and slamming him with grudging acknowledgements are two sides of the same coin, and probably more parallel than a lot of people think. I see no point in attacking or defending him to such degrees and I think there's a lot of intentional misreading going on with both sides here -- all the extreme dumping is overreacting, but so is all the indulgence and praise.

John's point on him being a better provocateur than Calz is actually the sharpest call here. But in and of itself it doesn't justify everything either.

Agh! How many fucking times do I have to explain myself? Have you read that thread to the end? (Here is all I was saying: living things tend to reproduce-->gay sex doesn't lead to reproduction. The end. No moral stance. No judgement. Nothing. For me to think it's wrong, I would also have to think masturbation and blow jobs are wrong and that ain't gonna happen. I think it shows how primed people are to see homophobia that unless you are saying "Yay gay sex! Yay!", you must be a homophobe. So...Yay, gay sex! Yay! Yay, masturbation! Yay!)

People on ILX seem to forget, or just don't agree with, the fact that being a cunt on a message board DOES mean people will think you're a cunt even if you're Mother fucking Theresa in real life. If trife wants to insult people for no better reason than it gives his shitty little existence some kind of focus, then he's welcome to masturbate furiously over the inevitable replies if that's what does it for him.

Oh, come OFF it Oops. If that was all you were saying, why the hell did you have to say it so vehemently, over and over again.

Why? Because I was--and still am--called a homophobe for just trying to get this very simple, unarguable non-point across. I was incensed by people willfully interpreting everything I said so that I came across as homophobic, reading things in and assuming things that just don't represent the way I truly feel. It's like arguing with a PC wall.

I mean, the word 'unnatural' was thrown around all over the place by yourself which is a pretty standard codeword for 'wrong' when talking about queerness.

Well, if I use a word that's been used by homophobes than surely I MUST be a homophobe too! Is that the extent of your reasoning and analytical skills? Go read that thread! I used natural in a different, non-judgemental way and shouldn't have, since it, like you say, has too much baggage associated with it.

If you don't believe that I truly don't have any hatred for homosexuals, if you don't think that I wish people would accept homosexuality in the same manner as they accept heterosexuality, if you think I'm taking 'the correct' stance just so some people on a message board who don't even know me don't think I'm an asshole, if you don't think I am AGAINST the very thing I am accused of being, if you don't believe me when I say that I support gay marriages and equal rights/fair treatment, then, honestly, fuck you.

Ricardo (RickyT), Friday, 19 September 2003 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

RickyT, how about Oops misjudged the feel of ILE early in his posting-on-it days and over-argued a point that didn't need to be made? I seethed about it for ages too, but there's only so much a chap can do to apologise/explain and I reckon he's done that. (compare to Ethan's explicit "boring, pally people fuck off" tone)

Nicolars (Nicole), Friday, 19 September 2003 16:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Jesus fucking twee Christ. There are maybe three of you who aren't tired sacks of crap to me right now, and the rest of you have pretty much sunk into caricature, so you know what? Fuck it.

Jody was being a bitch, and if she wasn't then she was just being galactically stupid, but who cares? It was the latest little teehee in a tedious series of hamhanded Ally-baiting. Yawn. Can we go to the show now?

trife blew something small into something it wasn't, and the thread ballooned from there. And then we all got to fight over whether people like him or not! Cause that's just great!

What fucking shit is that? I'm going to go start a recipe thread. Tell you what, fuck the chicken, fuck the wine, fuck the oregano, fuck the potatoes, why don't you sorry little shits just spend your time debating whether or not the food will taste good based on whether -- oh hold my heart and bless my kidneys -- you like me. Cause that'll be productive, and that'll get dinner on the table right quick.

Oops said some stupid shit. Maybe he meant it a different way. Maybe he meant it the same way. Anyone who gives a fuck isn't worth a shit in a tin can. It was a while ago and it wasn't yesterday, and regardless of how he meant it then, he doesn't say it now.

Jess knotted something in his pants again and waddled for awhile. I'm really not sure what that was about. He'll do it again sometime. He's Jess.

Okay, so I've got my bit of that part done, so next:

I love you all! The level of intelligence and wit here is just short of Heaven in a bag of blowjobs, and I've never made such fast friends so quickly, nor had my heart and mind challenged on a regular basis by the mere flicker of pixels against my screen. Be my puppy dog kittenface love muffets, please, o my leptweechaun baby?

RJG (RJG), Friday, 19 September 2003 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

It only turned vehement because I was having to defend myself from accusations of being homophobic; and this simple, basic fact I brought up was being derided as if it were something totally preposterous. I was just extremely frustrated at being misintrepreted and misread, which came across as me vehemently arguing about homosexuality.

tep my distate for ilx comes out being betrayed by it abandoning almost everything that once made it worthwhile through a number of avenues.

I love you like someone else's brother, jess, but to make this clear: I don't give a shit.

I don't care what ILX used to be like. I don't care if it used to be better. I don't care if different people used to be here. I don't care if it was more British, or less British, or more New York, or less New York, or more twee, or more hostile, or more serious, or more chummy, or more cliquey, or just easier to keep track of.

You enjoy hating ILE, or acting like you do. It's obvious, everyone knows it, and it's a running joke you run the risk of being conflated with. The bar isn't going to close just because you can't hold your liquor. Find your fucking center and move on.

(It was meant to have the same effect this time, too, nick.)

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 19 September 2003 17:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Or wait, jess, was I just not waiting my turn? Are you the only one who's supposed to play "ILE sucks and everything is terrible about it and here are the things I don't like and these are the Daves I know, I know"? Go for it. Your turn. I thought you'd tagged out.

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 19 September 2003 17:32 (twenty-two years ago)

you lot sure do get worked up easily for how rabid you portray the anti-ilx pack.

gabbo giftington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 19 September 2003 17:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Tep - I'm not sure you're making the place any less hostile right now.

bnw (bnw), Friday, 19 September 2003 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay, maybe this wasn't clear.

I'm not worked up. I mean, I'm a little annoyed, but the "all you fucking bags of fuck can fuck my fuckfuck"? That was the joke to parallel the "be my love muffets" -- the hostile/twee cycle, etc. etc.

But like I said, I still meant the content. This thread has been annoying, and has brought up a lot of annoying things about ILE in general; and I still like ILE.

Jess, I don't believe either in "you lot" or "the anti-ilx pack." There are individual posters who have various intermittent problems with various of ILE's intermittent problems. I don't think they all have the same problems, with ILE or with each other.

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 19 September 2003 17:37 (twenty-two years ago)

It's tired, it's token, it never changes anything, and it doesn't even have a new spin.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 19 September 2003 17:58 (twenty-two years ago)

uh hey ile if yall hate meaningless bitching and fighting so much how come this two day old bullshit thread is still like fifty posts above my two serious love threads i started just last night?

I posted there, trife!

And Jess, I don't disagree with you about the split, but it isn't complete: I cut both of them slack. (Does anyone really disagree about the split, other than people who've only been here a month or something? I think I've missed a thread.)

also, i work at home, weird hours, so it's even worse in a way.

There's a whole big internet out there, you know.

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 19 September 2003 18:03 (twenty-two years ago)

so i'm supposed to pull up stakes after 2 years just because a bunch of people who i find annoying-to-distateful have arrived?

gabbo giftington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 19 September 2003 18:08 (twenty-two years ago)

if a bunch of squatters showed up in the house next door and began burning their garbage in the backyard and walking their mangy dogs naked, would you just up and move out?

gabbo giftington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 19 September 2003 18:08 (twenty-two years ago)

No, but I also wouldn't yell out my window at them every five minutes "YOU'VE RUINED MY NEIGHBORHOOD!".

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 19 September 2003 18:11 (twenty-two years ago)

(I'd just ignore them. Like the hippies that live 2 doors down from me right now.)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 19 September 2003 18:11 (twenty-two years ago)

if a bunch of squatters showed up in the house next door and began burning their garbage in the backyard and walking their mangy dogs naked, would you just up and move out?

If two years went by and it was clear no one was ever going to do anything about it, ever ever, and I was miserable about it and constantly bitched about it and either there was nothing I could do about it or I'd opted not to do anything about it? For Christ's sake, of course I would.

Seriously. I know you get a pass on this card most of the time, the way Orbit didn't, and that's justified: but why are you here? Do you think things will be improved, or at least could be, or is there still enough good here to make up for the bad?

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 19 September 2003 18:12 (twenty-two years ago)

"make up for" doesn't have to mean it makes the bad overlookable, only that it makes it tolerable, I guess. I don't know, that's why I ask.

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 19 September 2003 18:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry, y'all! Dan Perry has just won ILX for infinity, eternity, and beyond. We're closed, peeps! Go home!

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Friday, 19 September 2003 18:14 (twenty-two years ago)

haha tep it hasn't been two years.

gabbo giftington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 19 September 2003 18:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm trying to stay away from this damn thread, but reading it brings a question to mind: What exactly is wrong with ILX anyway? What are nu-ILX discussing that isn't appropriate/pleasing? What are we not discussing that old-ILX used to discuss?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 19 September 2003 18:15 (twenty-two years ago)

it's barely been six months in fact.

(ilm is a whooooooole different story.)

gabbo giftington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 19 September 2003 18:16 (twenty-two years ago)

nick, and please understand i don't say this lightly, i would take a good old fashioned momus throwdown right now over another thread of lame dick jokes, pointless innuendo and "flirting", *smiles*, and yes, pointless cyclical meta arguments.

gabbo giftington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 19 September 2003 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I misread your "two years." Doesn't change anything I said: what are you doing about it? Would I fret and stew because goshdarnit it was my country, and those nasty peoples weren't gonna take it away from me? No. Would I keep yelling at them, and at everyone who wasn't yelling at them with me? No.

Because I'm not an asshole, Jess. I'm just a bastard.

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 19 September 2003 18:18 (twenty-two years ago)

hehe.

RJG (RJG), Friday, 19 September 2003 18:19 (twenty-two years ago)

And you still haven't really answered why you're here. So, leave. Just go. Why on earth would you stay? You don't lack social skills, so how long does it take you to realize that no matter how bad the party is, the guy in the corner talking about how bad it is is the worst part of it?

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 19 September 2003 18:20 (twenty-two years ago)

so ILE doesn't suit your tastes jess. I echo Tep in "I don't give a shit"

oops (Oops), Friday, 19 September 2003 18:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I think if people get annoyed by Jess and/or trife it says more about them than anything. Sure, they can act like assholes at times but I usually just find it funny. They're just personalities like everyone else around here. Maybe I'm just drawn to curmudgeonly figures or something, I dunno. Hey, I am a big Bill Hicks fan! (who's been invoked on this thread a couple times already). When I first got here I spent a lot of time reading the archives and familiarizing myself with a lot of the past debates and origins of some of the running themes, etc. So maybe I feel like even though I wasn't around in the "old days", sense of how some of the personalities have evolved.

It sucks that first impressions can be so enduring, but Oops count me among the people who still can't see your name on a post without in some measure thinking back to that stupid homosexuality thread. It sucks because you've revealed yourself to be a pretty decent guy. But there it is. Maybe it's because that was after I'd been here a couple months and I was just finally getting comfortable with knowing everyone's name and their personality, and the general tenor of the board, and then you showed up on that thread spouting all that idiocy and I couldn't help but think "who the hell is this goofball?" Oh well. I know I've said my share of idiotic things around here as well, but there's nothing anyone can do about it.

The only way talk of Old-ILX bugs me is that Old-ILX frequently wasn't that GOOD. I mean, have people read those threads Frank Kogan linked to on that recently-revived "how did you discover this place" thread? SOme of the thinking and writing on there is ASTOUNDINGLY bad (esp on the Never Mind the Bollocks one). A lot of it by people who are now "stars" of ILM. Many other "old-ILM" threads suck really, really bad. Especially anything having to do with prog rocl. So I don't know. I think the introduction via google or whatever of new posters, new ideas is easily the best thing that happened in the history of this place.

And for the record, I totally read jody's posting on that "laugh out loud" thread as a sort of complimentary olive branch. Like, "aw how cute, they're making this thing work despite what they both had said about it previously!" It is kind of funny! And cool!

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 19 September 2003 18:21 (twenty-two years ago)

haha yeah, don't get me wrong, OLD old ilm was pretty bad! way too touchy-feely and overly polite.

and tep, i stay because thankfully the people who i don't like (i'm not going to bother naming names) aren't the only people who post to ilx!

gabbo giftington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 19 September 2003 18:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not annoyed by Jess. I like Jess and trife both. That's not especially relevant. I'm annoyed by one particular thing Jess does, because he does it so often, and because I'm seeing fewer and fewer things from him that are anything else. (Because I don't read ILM, or somehow miss the right threads here? Maybe. I don't know.)

crosspost:

and tep, i stay because thankfully the people who i don't like (i'm not going to bother naming names) aren't the only people who post to ilx!

Okay, so there we go, forget what I said about leaving. Is there a thread divide or just a user divide -- some threads, you can obviously know to ignore, and I know you often don't.

Look, it's no secret I don't like the fact that I live in Indiana, but dammit, I'm here, and I'm here for five years (I'd rather not add the "unless my girlfriend and I break up" disclaimer). I'd be incredibly unpleasant and smoke three packs a day and never get anything done if I couldn't get over that. There's a couple good book stores, a couple great restaurants, and the best pizza I've had outside the Boston area. Yeah, sometimes it rings false and hollow and the effort becomes obvious that I'm "accentuating the positive," but what else am I gonna do?

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 19 September 2003 18:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Jesus, even I have gotten past Oops's arguments on that one thread. Yes, I disagree with him about one relatively small aspect of his worldview -- but that's just one thing! There isn't anyone I agree with 100%. I think Oops has posted more than enough interesting, humane, and funny stuff since then to make up for that first awkward thread.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 19 September 2003 18:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Getting back to the subject at hand (which is probably more pertinent to this ILX divide than some would like to admit):

Is there anyone out there, who, when they imagine someone following up a 'compliment' in real life with "and that's a good thing" (cue white toothed *ching*), doesn't imagine it as a smarmy, pervy (or at best) utterly cheesy thing to say? Am I the only one who sees it as two short steps removed from "I've got a lollipop in my pocket and my hand on my pants (for you)"?

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 19 September 2003 18:57 (twenty-two years ago)

"Hey, little girl, would you like a salted nut roll?"

Chris P (Chris P), Friday, 19 September 2003 19:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Am I the only one who sees it as two short steps removed from "I've got a lollipop in my pocket and my hand on my pants (for you)"?

I addressed this way up-thread, tongue-in-cheekily enough perhaps that it wasn't commented on.

"Imagine" someone following up a compliment? It's practically de rigeur, or commonly added if the person you're talking to doesn't immediately respond -- "hey, doing your hair that way makes you look like Jennifer Beals in Flashdance! ... that's a good thing."

It's hardly limited to men-talking-to-women, or people-talking-to-women, I hear it fairly frequented directed at men -- somewhat less, but men aren't expected to care as much what people say about their appearance. Whether they do or not, whatever, but they're not expected to.

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 19 September 2003 19:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I think you're a bit insane, mark. I actually should have said 'that's not a bad thing'. Just didn't want it to look like I was taking a swipe at her, which I thought may have been the case since she didn't even know what one of the people I compared her to looks like.
If I wanted to be cheesy or creepy, I JUST WOULD HAVE DONE IT DIRECTLY.

-- Chris Piuma (chri...), September 19th, 2003.

Was it on da house? Or how much did he charge you for it? What would you consider a reasonable estimate to ask a stranger for? I was hoping that if I were to actually get something done by the end of the year, I could ask Sam Brown (explodingdog.com) to draw some artwork for it. But that depends on how things unravel.

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Friday, 19 September 2003 19:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Sam Brown doesn't do artwork for musicians. And the artwork was more or less on the house for me, because we're friends. But e-mail me off-list with details and I'll put you guys in touch. (The e-mail address below works, obviously.)

It's a shame Jon B didn't hang around more - I like the back-and- forth between him and DZ.
As someone who's never been to NZ, or seen the Dead C farting abt live, I think that 'exotic mystery' element alluded to by Duane is deffo one of the big attractions for me. First time I heard the DC's earlier, 'songier' recs like 'Trapdoor Fucking Exit', 'Harsh 70s Reality' or 'DR 503', they sounded like field recordings made in Ed Gein's shed - scary, messy, alien/foreign/otherworldly, horrible.

actually that's a set, and a stylist was brought in and everything.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 22 September 2003 03:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I know everyone got distracted by the kitty pix, but can someone please answer Nickalicious' question?

What exactly is wrong with ILX anyway? What are nu-ILX discussing that isn't appropriate/pleasing? What are we not discussing that old-ILX used to discuss?

Jess sez the problems with ILE have been going on for "barely ... six months in fact." Is there anything specific that happened six months ago? Was it merely a mass influx of nu-ILXors? Even though I haven't been singled out, it's hard not to feel a bit offended just because I happened to find this board in February and not in 2001.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 22 September 2003 03:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I find all of this amusing, simply because I'm on several other boards and newsgroups where for the entire 4-6 years I've been on them, someone is always saying "its changed! Things are getting worse now! Things were better when X!".

If you want things to be like what suited you at a specific moment, then save a weeks worth of threads to a log and like, just read it over and over, k tks.

I'm on several other boards and newsgroups where for the entire 4-6 years I've been on them, someone is always saying "its changed! Things are getting worse now! Things were better when X!".

I think it's really only as of a couple years ago that people stopped saying it about the internet as a whole, for that matter. (Or if they do, it isn't the perpetual "it's never been the same since AOL! / since ISPs! / since that article in Mondo!" lament you used to get.)

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 22 September 2003 03:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Given the potential new influx of people here in a few days, there might yet be a new spasm of this...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 22 September 2003 03:48 (twenty-two years ago)

The influx is because Tom E. has mentioned that he was being interviewed by, I believe, the Guardian about Freaky Trigger and ILXor, and that links to both will be run in the story itself, which I gather should be published sometime later this week. So maybe nobody will visit, but then again...

Ned, what did you do at the Chuck E. Cheese's? WHAT DID YOU DO?

Suffer a sugar rush and sensory overload. The people who worked there looked like zombies, I sure don't blame em.

However, all was not lost, since while I was there I was able for the first time to see Carl and Phil, MONKEY NINJAS.

Yes, Thursday morning is when we expect Hurricane Guardian. I didn't mention it on-board cos i) it might not happen if they get something more newsworthy to print; ii) it'll mostly impact ILM not ILE; iii) I didn't want any self-consciousness to creep in.

(It was meant to run last week - FT readers will note that this is why there was a deluge of posts on Wednesday to the blogs and very little since.)

Tom (Groke), Monday, 22 September 2003 07:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 22 September 2003 13:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it's foolishness to say that Ethan and Jess aren't right in so much that ILE has definitely changed over the past year.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 22 September 2003 13:25 (twenty-two years ago)

And nick's question was answered, almost immediately after he posted it, for the record (just so no one thinks I was being "insensitive" with my cat predicament meta-sarcasm photos all over the joint):

nick, and please understand i don't say this lightly, i would take a good old fashioned momus throwdown right now over another thread of lame dick jokes, pointless innuendo and "flirting", *smiles*, and yes, pointless cyclical meta arguments.

what no one seems to understand on this thread anyway, on both sides, is that if your behavior is offending people, no matter how you intended the behavior to be taken, no amount of arguing about how you didn't mean to be creepy/bitchy/boringly vicious and repetitive is going to change the fact that that's how your behavior is being taken by people, and you should apologize to the offended parties and move on with your life. WTF? or not apologize and just move on with your life. "Oh I didn't mean it THAT way why don't you just shut up" is 7 times out of 10 the lamest boy-who-cried-wolf excuse ever anyway, and that's like this entire thread. "You misunderstand us! If you don't like it, leave!"

For like, ten thousand posts. At least there's no dick jokes?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 22 September 2003 13:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it's foolishness to say that Ethan and Jess aren't right in so much that ILE has definitely changed over the past year.

This is also true of course. Actually, I reckon there's still pretty much the same amount of really good stuff being posted by contributors both old and new, maybe even more, but the noise around it has increased. If this is a consequence of ILX being much bigger and having a wider audience than one or two years ago then so be it.

I also think that having a number of separate ILX "groups" has accelerated this - there are people right up at the top of the posting chart who I don't think I could attribute a personality to if I tried, mostly because they always seem to be posting at a time when I'm not. The European workplace timezone side of ILX - who are the people I have most contact with - seem as on form as ever. This is probably why I regrettably always miss the mentalism.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 22 September 2003 13:57 (twenty-two years ago)

maybe there are an increasing number of posts/threads/people here which are interchangeable with those of any other board on the internet and the lack of those in the past was the main bonus of ILX.

sure it's not dead but I think this is what people are getting at, ILX was never without its mentalism but at least it was without the ping pong neediness etc that kills every discussion and makes everything a cry for help all over boards online.

No need to have fits anyone or get annoyed but that's what Jess/Ethan myself now and I suspect plenty of others are probably getting at.

I don't know if there's any objective truth to how you guys feel (I've read old threads and they don't seem to be qualitatively different in any significant way...others have came to the same conclusion) but that doesn't really matter. I'm sorry y'all feel that way, but what is airing these grievances going to accomplish? It seems to just make things worse.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 00:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Ping pong neediness? ONE thread where people talk to other people WHO CARE about their lives? Hardly.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 13:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Ally, point taken, though thanks for ignoring the fact that I was GENERALISING... BUT it's obvious that they feel there are lots of new(er), vocal people with whom they have nothing in common and it threatens them, pretty transparently because their egos are getting less attention. True?

Mark C (Mark C), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 13:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it's more that some of the older posters (not just our favorite curmudgeons, mind you) only see certain things that newer ilxors post which might seem banal to them and overlook or never even see some of the more in-depth posts by these same nu-folks and assume that there's some sort of lack-of-substance on ILX that they can (falsely) attribute to the influx of these newer posters. At least, that's how it comes off.

Oh fuck why didn't I just ignore this thread!?!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 13:25 (twenty-two years ago)

i like to post pictures.

Kingfish (Kingfish), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 13:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Mark, that's totally correct! *slaps forehead* Of course! Why didn't I think of that? Obviously everyone who dislikes another person is jealous of them or threatened by them! No one ever dislikes a person for a rational reason! Of course! My god, have I been so blind all these years!!

Your generalization is the grossest misrepresentation of Old ILX that I have seen since Jess's claim that it was so much significantly better (it wasn't, though a smaller group=less chance for social splintering resulting in large annoyance factions). Just do a simple search on "Ethan Padgett" for fuck's sake, Mark.

nickalicious, did it ever occur to you that maybe reducing the signal to noise ratio might be a good idea? I'm not trying to piss anyone off but I admit that I am more on Jess/Ethan's side on this than the other side, though I just take the tactic of mostly ignoring people/posts as much as I can. But as I said upthread, it applies to both sides: if your behavior is being taken a certain way, no matter what YOU think of your behavior, if you don't want to be represented in that fashion, you should change the behavior because no matter what the intention is, it's the interpretation of others that matters in social discourse. That's just what we like to call "life" in clinical terms.

I mean, let me ask you this, and this is directed at nothing in specific, but say you are right: why should I bother searching out "substance" from someone who, as far as I can tell, has the substance of a windup monkey? ("I" universal, "someone" universal, etc) Would YOU?

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 13:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Mark C if I was posting somewhere and there was an influx of vocal new people with whom I had nothing in common (your words, my italics), why would my dislike of the situation neccessarily be down to being threatened, rather than say irritated, or bored?

(xpost with Ally)

(Another question for Mark - why did all the people who stopped posting to Sinister before they joined ILX stop posting?)

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 13:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Define "signal" and "noise". (This is the crux of the problem as far as I can see and something that won't be solved.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 13:37 (twenty-two years ago)

...did it ever occur to you that maybe reducing the signal to noise ratio might be a good idea?

This is why I constantly don't post things on this board when I have an urge to (and also why in life there are so many thoughts I have that I don't speak aloud).

And I ain't urging anyone to go out of their way to seek anything out at all. I'm just saying that maybe some of the accused-of-ruining-ILX new(er)bies have contributed quite a bit of good shit and, by avoiding their threads simply because they're nu-folks, some of the Old Guard are missing out on really friggin good posts and discussions. Tis all I'm saying.

As for the "bad dick jokes" factor attributed to nu-ILX, all I can say is that maybe Dan Perry is a bad influence on us all. Maybe we (and by "we" I include me) should just leave the potty-humor to him then?

(x-post speaking of Dan Perry that's a very good point he just made)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 13:44 (twenty-two years ago)

HI IS EVERBODY ALRGIHT OK

Amazing Randy, Tuesday, 23 September 2003 13:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm pretty sure nickalicious, who pointed out the banality/substance thing that I was responding to, knows the definition of "signal" to "noise" in this instance, and I'm pretty damn sure you do too, Dan. Especially since Ethan/Jess/Ronan/etc have already pointed out several of the threads in question that they find so bothersome and repetitive.

Tom basically got my post down in a polite way.

The bottom line is this: I'm the nicest person in the entire universe in real life. Like, incredibly fucking sweet, throwing down rounds at FAPs and bringing gifts for friends and making dinner for fucking strangers cos oh Ned wants to invite people over. But I'm taken as one of the biggest bitches on this board. Why? Because I present myself that way. And I'm aware of this issue and don't feel like changing it. If I sat there and whined and cried that no one looked for my nice posts when thinking I was a hard ass bitch, then everyone would rightly be a bit fucked off with this behavior. You either put up or shut up. I'm not saying anyone SHOULD care if they are being viewed by certain people as banal, boring, etc, but I'm saying that if you DO care about this, then modify your behavior! This is just how things are! You wouldn't go into a conversation in real life and act like an ass and then NOT modify the behavior when told you are offending someone, right? Unless you didn't care.

Like I said, I'm not saying anyone SHOULD necessarily care. Just that if you don't care, then why bother arguing?

I'm also not saying Jess or Ethan are right to go on every one of those threads and bitch everyone out; I think they have better things to do with their time and while it can be funny, they're just increasing the "signal-to-noise" ratio that is bothering them.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 13:48 (twenty-two years ago)

heh, we've had the signal-to-noise ratio discussion a few times. i think one way of doing it is by using killfiles or something like that but I don't know how feasible that is and how much work would be involved.

I think maybe changing the way you use ilx might be a better idea (post less, look at a smaller number of threads a day).

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 13:50 (twenty-two years ago)

(x-post)

nickalicious, I understand English so I understand the general gist of what you said vis-a-vis missing out on good posts. What I'm asking you is, if all anyone sees from a person--on both "banal" threads and some threads that have actual conversation going on them--is bullshit and nudge-nudge flirting and dick jokes, why should people give a shit that they also post serious things? If YOU were annoyed by everything you had seen by a poster so far, would you go out of your way to find out the real person behind the jibberish or would you, too, just ignore them?

The thing is, the people who are posting right now are no one I'd specifically be talking about myself so it's a bit of a useless point.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 13:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I am signal! You are noise! Feel the ratio! Spank the boys!

YOU ARE ALL GROTTY JOBBIES TODAY

WOOGH

groohaha (chirombo), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 13:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Any given dick joke says more than any given whiny meta post. Navel-gazing vs. dick-gazing.

NA (Nick A.), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 13:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe my dislike of Etahn and, right now, Jess is for just the reasons you said, Ally.

And "substance". Ally, and how do you find that? Put long words into the Search facility? Or perhaps, like everyone else, you read the threads you're interested in?

If Jess doesn't like what nu-ILX says on regular threads, then Jess should argue the point on those threads. For him to start hurling sarcastic abuse about on a thread in which he has zero interest, for no other reason than malice, then I'd say either he has a fucked up way of showing boredom or feels threatened.

"if you don't care, then why bother arguing?"

Um, Ally, THAT'S WHAT I'M FUCKING SAYING. And yeah, maybe you could make an effort to be a bit less of a bitch to me, here, now, cos I'll be genuinely upset if you don't give a shit about me.

Mark C (Mark C), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 13:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh sorry I see what you're saying Ally! Good point (fwiw though, there are certain posters who irk me a bit too but I guess the diff is that I usually don't care so much about who posted what as what they posted).

I really don't see that much "nudge-nudge flirting" and "dick jokes" though, at least in terms of ratio-to-other-types-of-posts. As far as I can tell the biggest diff. between old- and nu-ILX is the ratio of goofy random pics to word posts.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 13:59 (twenty-two years ago)

ha ha of course I just realized that, as part of nu-ILX/the problem, I don't really have the frame of reference that others do huh?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 14:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Ally, way back up there you were saying the exact same thing I am with more words. Since it's patently obvious that everyone sees "signal" and "noise" differently, what is the point of arguing about it?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 14:03 (twenty-two years ago)

In a sense it doesn't matter who is posting, it matters how many people are - the format of ILX is terrific but I think it has a structural weakness which is only recently becoming noticeable. The scroll-down, no-side-branches format is great for question/answer threads, good for list threads, and good for discussions as long as the level of posting doesn't get too unwieldy.

As soon as too many people start posting to a thread, or people start treating the thread like AIM*, that thread runs the risk of being derailed, turning into just chatter or into a fight. With 500 regular posters the chances of that happening are much higher, particularly as all the different posters have different ideas about what's worth being serious over and what's worth making dick jokes or bitching at other posters over.

*More than any individual poster or group of posters or anything else, if I had to 'put the blame' for ILX being harder work now than it was a year ago I'd put it on the influence of AIM and the way friends' relationships with each other are so attuned to the really fast repartee you get there.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 14:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Dan, I'm solely taking huge offense at Mark's post about Jess/Ethan worship and that the only reason they might dislike "nu-ILX" is because of some fear/threat/jealousy factor which basically A) insults everyone who was on ILX prior to so-called nu-ILX (like I said, if someone could please point me to the Jess/Ethan ego-stroking fest I'd appreciate it) B) insults everyone who dislikes anyone ever! It's not good psychology and it's an obnoxious point.

Mark, no one is saying you are wrong to dislike Jess or Ethan's behavior and it's not like my post--behave the way you want to be perceived--is somehow escaping Jess and Ethan. It goes for them too, so I don't quite understand how you're getting so fucking offended by the concept as if there's some great Jess and Ethan excusal going on here. What I am saying is to brush off their posts as belligerence from little children who purely are jealous of attention is bullshit and not much better than going onto luna's thread and calling her a moron.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 14:08 (twenty-two years ago)

(and I'm also not saying that every single person on this thread isn't guilty of banal chit chat on board, including Jess, Ethan, Ronan and myself)

(fuck it, sayonara Tokyo.)

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 14:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Nickalicious - try reading all threads prior to 3.15pm GMT on 17th October 2002, the exact moment at which old-ILX became nu-ILX.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 14:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, I still think it's true. Regardless of all the great stuff they've written, they're acting like particularly nasty 6-year-olds.

And calm the fuck down - I never accused you or anyone of worshipping them. BUT old-ILX gave them more opportunity for their voices to be heard, and no doubt rightly won them both lots of fans. Seriously, justify Jess's behaviour on Luna's thread in a different way. I am NOT saying that all their posts are like this - I even felt a bit stupid after reading some fine postings from trife earlier today (tho I stick to my assertion that much of what he's said in the last few months on ILE has been pissy, abusive and pointless).

Okay, I'm trying to make one point, you're trying to make another. I hear you. I'll leave it.

Oh yes, one more thing. I over-react to situations like this cos I get so fucking angry at people needlessly abusing people I care about. Vicious circle.

Mark C (Mark C), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 14:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Ok, I'm confused here. Either I'm welcome here or I'm not welcome here. Please, guys, make up your minds.

You know, I thought it was too much of a good thing, this whole deal of feeling welcomed here as quickly as I did. I knew there had to be a catch, and apparently it's just foisted itself upon me. Ok, fine, hate me because I use asterisks or because I seek human connections on this silly little thing or because I like talking about mundane things since those moments are the only ones on this forum where I'm not worried about coming across as someone who's as intelligent, witty, and/or insightful as the rest of you lot, but please, make up your minds. Are you going to be happy I arrived here or are you going to rush up to gather my bags so I can leave?

The general feeling I'm getting from this thread is that I'm not welcomed here anymore, and that's sad and confusing because I would really like to get the chance to know you all a lot better than I do at present, and because I'm not at all aware of where I stand in the whole general scheme of things anymore.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 14:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha. I can't believe I just read the 400 or so posts in this thread. But, you know, I must catch up since I missed some days due to the storm!

I am totally pro-retro-post-nu ILX. I am 100% pally. I've liked all the ILXors I've met. I feel truly connected to many that I'll probably never get a chance to meet. It doesn't take long for even the newest newbies' personalities to shine through. AND THOSE KITTEN PIX MAKE ME SO HAPPY THAT I'M YELLING!

I don't really have a point.

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 14:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I would hope that there is room for everything on ILX. You have the touchy feely threads (which I personally feel happier contributing to) & you have the intellectual threads which I tend not to contribute to. I have my opinions on things & for the majority of the time, I choose not to air them on ILX. I am satisfied with my contributions on certain threads & there I will remain. If those type of threads are not enjoyed by individuals, then stay off them, surely it should be as simple as that. I guess I am considered a 'newbie' even though I seem to have been here for ages & am also considered to be one of the posters that are making ILX a shitty place to be. Well apologies, but that is why I confine my posts to the threads I do. I like catching up with certain ilxors esp in the states. Mostly, ILX fills my dull days at work & if I can speak with people that appeal to me about all manor of subjects, then surely that should be a good enough reason to stay.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 14:32 (twenty-two years ago)

And, Dee, don't feel like this is all about you. Um, in a good way. Or, that's a good thing.
There is lots of pallyness all over ILX. It glistens with pallyness. And I don't have anything against it myself. What's the point of a message board if you aren't allowed to connect with the other posters at all? I mean, you don't have to get to know anyone, but that's why I'm here. I understand some people might say newbies might feel left out. So chat up the newbies too! (um, though, I'm not saying I do a particularly great job of this myself)

Sarah MCLusky (coco), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 14:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I remember when ILx could go months at a time without a new meta-crisis.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 14:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I wonder sometimes if the least stressful solution at this point might not just be another board split. We all have the ability to make our own boards within the ilx.wh3rd.net server, it amazes me that more people haven't.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 14:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Dan, Your posts today suggest you're wearing a scary clown costume. I don't know why. Um, are you? ARe you goth now?

Sarah MCLUsky (coco), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 14:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Though, Dee, if you stay (which I hope you will), you will have to stop asking ILX to make up its mind about you. We don't have a mind.

I think I've said before: "This is the thread where I say" = an excellent thing. Every thread looking like "This is the thread where I say" = not an excellent thing.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 14:43 (twenty-two years ago)

What Dan said, really, and Dee, do not leave. And let it be known -- to pick four examples here -- that Ally is indeed a good and kind person, very tolerant of my foibles, that Jess is a wry, warm and hilarious person to talk to, that Ethan clearly has intelligence and more range than some give him credit for, that Mark C always has struck me as a very good egg. I don't put them on pedestals, no more than I put myself on one, and trust me when I say I can wallow in self-doubt and self-criticism with the best. My point is that there's a lot to celebrate about the people who are all here, old, new, whatever.

Many good points -- many parallel and restated points, actually, as has been noted -- have come up on this thread. Are we to ignore them all because we're stating them with different examples in mind or different angles to look at the situation?

A deep breath, folks, a pause and a stepping back. Always the best thing. I don't always follow that advice myself, I know, but I find it works more often than not.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 14:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Tom, the subboards don't generally seem to do all that well (even I Love Film), but if it were a larger general board... I mean, how would you distinguish it from ILE's generalness? Would you start up I Love Feelings? Or maybe I Love Posting Whatever's In My Clipboard? I Love Dick Jokes? Or the other direction, I Love Everything But Smalltalk? I Love Everyone Who Has Been On ILX For At Least A Year?

Chris P (Chris P), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Segregation rules.

NA (Nick A.), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 15:07 (twenty-two years ago)

i laugh at you guys

chaki (chaki), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 15:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Chris I was thinking of the way the Dunedin people had their own kind of sub-board on Greenspun for a while in which they just talked a load of nonsense about Dunedin stuff, faffed about, made jokes etc. It seemed to work pretty well and it didn't take anythihg away from ILE really.

For instance, I like being pally online. I like goofing about with the other bored-at-work Brits I do and don't know. But I don't want to have to filter out other people's palliness in order to get to my own palliness, and I don't see why other people should be burdened with mine. If there was some kind of board for London ILX small talk I'd be on it all day probably. AIM, chatrooms and small message boards seem to me fantastic ways to be pally online. Huge public messageboards like ILE has become seem to me a sub-optimal place to do it.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 15:22 (twenty-two years ago)

If Jess doesn't like what nu-ILX says on regular threads, then Jess should argue the point on those threads

What do you think he was doing the last few days Mark? Is there a polite way of saying "what on earth are you people about"? I realise there isn't and maybe he should keep his mouth shut but to some people here, who aren't necessarily dickheads or antagonists (short tempered maybe) some of what is typed is so totally ridiculous. The main problem here is that to highlight this is always going to make the accuser seem like a dick.

Ally is fairly otm, especially in pointing out the varying tastes in banal chit chat. It always happens with ILX that people assume because we have a problem and refer to it as "banal chitchat" that we want to read about the average hypotenuse length of triangular rain forests or something when really it's deeper and more personal than that.

Any given dick joke says more than any given whiny meta post. Navel-gazing vs. dick-gazing

I would say 80 percent of what I've typed ever on ILX is "banal" or maybe "dickjokes" in nature but to me good smart conversation is talking to someone I like about Hollyoaks, and boring conversation to someone I don't about anything.

I started a similar thread to Ethan's or made a similar point not a long time ago and I feel the same now, I am only lucky that I post in the UK window I think. That said I feel slightly bad here because I quite like some people on the opposite side of this argument to me yet I don't want to say no no you're ok because that's ridiculous.

Mainly the size issue could be the thing cos ILE doesn't feel like a bunch of people anymore, the funny thing is if I wanted the kind of support or decent normal chat that ILE used to provide I could go on to the "this is the thread where I say" threads and I'm sure within 10 seconds someone would say something.

But honestly when you don't know the people can you really believe it's not just one big fishing contest. And I don't mean "know" the person personally, there are plenty people here who actually know me but they aren't the ones on those threads. Perhaps some people prefer to be a bit independent.

I don't really know.

Tom's suggestion about splitting the boards is sort of otm, but in some sense isn't old ILX what attracted new ILX originally?

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 15:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Tom Ewing has become seem to me a very nice man.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Have you been on the beer Dan?

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 15:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Can we start a subboard for whiny meta bullshit? This is a serious request.

NA (Nick A.), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 15:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't say I agree, Tom. I don't think we'd be even having this conversation if Jess hadn't gone trampling into a thread he hated and started abusing people. Most of us are grown up enough to simple ignore or avoid the threads where we feel we have nothing to contribute (NB I am not one of these grown-up people).

Surely the great majority of ILXors don't want any kind of cleansing? Who decides who goes and who stays? Paraphrasing the borrowed words of Jess himself, first they came for the pally threads... Splitting the boards so that one type of person goes here and one type of person goes there seems a particularly distasteful form of personality-based apartheid.

(actually, adding to the above. Palliness can be tiresome on threads where it dilutes or derails. The "This is where I say" threads have been a corralling of the palliness of a certain group of people into easily defined confines *within* ILX and it works just fine)

Mark C (Mark C), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 15:42 (twenty-two years ago)

why are you posting that here, NA?

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 15:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Because despite the fact that ILX has many problems, these weekly existential crises are the only thing I would actively choose to get rid of if I had one wish. They are cyclical, repetitive, empty, useless, and getting more and more frequent. Yes, ILX is changing. It's in a perpetual state of change. There's nothing you can do about it. Some people will leave. New people will start coming in. The overall tone will change. You might not like the change. But bitching and moaning won't stop it. Even enforcing new bullshit rules or subboards won't stop it. So just deal with it.

Oh wait, were you just pointing out the irony of me making a complaint about meta threads, which in itself is a meta post? Hilarious.

NA (Nick A.), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 15:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Point taken, Nick, but see how it starts?

Mark C (Mark C), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 15:51 (twenty-two years ago)

How can pallyness derail threads?

I suppose the meta anti-pallyness is a form of pallyness in itself. Or something. I'm confused.

Anyway, I'm all for diversity. I don't have much interest in sports threads or ones analyzing characteres in tv shows that I don't watch, but I don't think they should be banned. It's a forum after all.

I've never been an active member of a board before this one, so I don't have much to compare. But I do know I've never encountered one as engaging as this one. It sucked me right in.

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 15:52 (twenty-two years ago)

No, I'm not sure what you're saying, Mark.

NA (Nick A.), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 15:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Mark C I had no idea until about half an hour ago that Jess had been doing that because I never go near those threads, they're none of my business. They do cordon themselves off effectively, I agree.

I'm not proposing any kind of top-down 'cleansing' for goodness' sakes. I'm just saying I'm surprised more people haven't set up localised boards, it seems to me an obvious thing to do. I don't want to split anything into old ILX and nu ILX, for instance, but I've been saying for ages that ILE just seems too damn BIG and it's getting worse not better.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 15:54 (twenty-two years ago)

http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/0434000795.02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

Tim (Tim), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 15:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Also Nick A you're totally wrong even if you only got Richard's joke recently, in the past lots of times new rules and meta stuff have helped the boards, whether by allowing people to vent like on this thread or in other ways. Around the time of the last major meta when the one post per person per day guideline was brought in, the boards did improve a bit.

I think the problem with this particular meta is that people who are happy with ILX perpetually have no idea why anyone wouldn't feel the same way as they do, whether this justifies the complaints in the first place is an arguable case, but it does lead to stand-off.

Does anyone besides long tired on hand example Jess (or whoever else) have any idea what Jess/Ethan/whoever agrees is complaining about? Really? In any sense at all?

It doesn't look that way.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 16:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I think a one post per person per day guideline is the way to GO, haha.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 16:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't understand what the complaint specifically is (although I'm trying, and I think I have a general idea) because I haven't seen it clearly defined by anyone. Maybe I'm on the wrong threads.

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 16:04 (twenty-two years ago)

i last posted on this thread four days ago. you are all fucking nuts.

tom otm. as usual.

gabbo giftington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 16:06 (twenty-two years ago)

its not palliness per-se but palliness of people i don't much like in ways i don't much like, and the continuing creeping invasion of subtle macho-stoopid values (and their counterparts) which makes the place feel deadening.

like one small example -- a t hrowdown against libertarian values? i outgrew that shit in my first year of high school. there was someting about ile that WASN'T just the general values of the population, but more thoughtful, respectful, insightful, etc.

i mean its hard to call out pe ople for acting like everyone else in the world, and it comes off pretty snotty too but there you go.

i mean with a few exceptions even the kitten threads were better.

What's funny is that everyone who has responded since me and Mark C did battle royale isn't anyone I'd even think of as being annoying in any way which is of course the problems with these discussions; if you actually call someone out, like ethan making fun of oops's (that's a good thing) post, you're being a dick and everyone goes shitcakes on you, but if you try to be as nondescript as possible to avoid a specific fight, you make people completely paranoid for no good reason.

Successful integration in North America

The merger between Schindler and Millar, which was initiated in the first half of 2002, was completed successfully. Thanks to exploitation of state-of-the-art technologies and synergies, the new Schindler organization is even stronger and more cost-efficient. It has a comprehensive and competitive product assortment, a very dense nationwide network of more than 250 branches, and offers the full range of maintenance services from a single supplier.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 19:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm so disturbed by this news that I can no longer have a good game of creepy flirtation with RJG and Nicole. GOD.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 20:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I was doing anything but being creepy, btw.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 20:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Quiet creepiness, perhaps?

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 20:16 (twenty-two years ago)

RJG has pretty hair (that's a good thing)

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 20:17 (twenty-two years ago)

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 20:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I hate you because you are Morrissey.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 20:37 (twenty-two years ago)

One of the main reasons I went lurker I think was because I realized ILX had become such a big part of my world that I was starting to feel like metabitching about certain people making me really upset with unfunny jokes and comments that to me were banal and stupid.

This was a pretty good signal that I needed some time off. I feel better for it and I might start posting again sometime soon, even. I advise everyone who has posted to this thread to try doing the same.

I think the answer to our problems is to have a focus group.

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 20:49 (twenty-two years ago)

a focus group for posters?

some posters are hits, too many are missys.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 20:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes. A focus group for posters. The loser has to play Kahuka 40 Hands until he passes out.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 20:52 (twenty-two years ago)

sterling clover knows about critical theorists and likes pop music and i don't know if he likes indie rock. i don't know much about him. i read his website before but it's very, very hard to understand and i checked it again a few times and he hadn't updated it.

i would give him: 8/10.

s trife is, i think, from athens, georgia, where r.e.m. is from and everyone likes indie rock and he likes the linkin park remix album and he bought a bee shirt like an indie rocker would wear and he reviewed an eminem cd for pitchforkmedia, an indie rocker website. he once told me that rap-rock sincerity was the new faux-naif. he e-mailed me once and asked if i had AIM and he told me to get it. but i don't know what the whole thing was all about. i thought it was cool that he e-mailed me but we never talked after that.

i would give him: 9/10.

jess is from the east coast, i think, and wrote about dj sammy in the village voice, which is a magazine or a newspaper in new york city, and he has a girlfriend named nancy. he didn't like indie rock for a while but then he started to like it again. he thought 'satisfaction' was the best hip-hop single of the year. he's always saying how bad ilm is. i don't know how to react to that.

i would give him: 6/10.
