Mark my words, though, either Philadelphia or Pittsburgh will be the next great American city to be spoiled by the trendies.
― Tadeusz Suchodolski, Friday, 28 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)
As for Philly, I've noticed the transformation of formerly shabby/working-class sections into trendier-than-thou enclaves (Manyunk and Northern Liberties), just like what happened to Tribeca. And South Street ain't as much fun as it was when I was teenager. Still, I think folks from Newcastle or Birmingham would probably find goodly portions of Philly to be "just like home." Maybe I should take my musings to the now-sadly defunct "gentrification" thread, tho' and not spoil Nathalie's stay in SF with my sourpussisms.

If it's just the gay element one is looking for in a city, I can safely say as an observer that such a one is better off in either Portland or Seattle than SF, for a hit/miss ratio.
Another observation though is that there are a lot more people in SF that pretend to be insane. In Seattle, a lot of people are certifiably insane.
That said, I think SF is a great city... some of the coolest people I know live there, which makes it great to save money when finding a place to stay there. (heh heh). But given current economic trends, and the "Vegetation is our enemy" feel I get in the more affordable areas in the city, I can't advocate living there right now.
Besides, once you actually have to leave the 7 square miles that is SF (to go to work most likely), and maybe parts of Berkeley, you find yourself in suburbia that's not much different than the southern California variety.. except the rent's twice as high.

there were tons of great clubs (chameleon/kennel club/purple onion/i-bar/killowatt) and the weirdest, most absurd music scene imaginable: the whole amarillo/bananafish axis in particular was completely eye-opening to my young head.
those days are long gone, and even despite recent closures of critical venues to the phoenix from the ashes weird-core scene (clit-stop, kimo's etc.) i'm still here, still going to shows and trying to play in and about.
was tempted by nyc about 3 years ago, but the winters might be too frosty for my butt. it's like 75 here today with a calm breeze... it could be buenos aires.

By JACKIE HALLIFAXAssociated Press
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Gov. Jeb Bush joked during a Florida Cabinet meeting Wednesday that the people of San Francisco may be endangered and, "That's probably good news for the country."
The subject was environmental land and Bush was looking at a map showing locations with a lot of different wildlife.
"It looks like the people of San Francisco are an endangered species, which may not be a bad thing. That's probably good news for the country."
People in the room broke into laughter
"Did I just say that out loud?" the governor asked.
San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown wasn't too worried by the comment, according to spokesman P.J. Johnston.
"When he finally stopped laughing, he said, 'I'm sure this is a tongue-in-cheek comment. I'd feel a little better if the governor would send me one of his alligators; I've got a supervisor that needs companionship,'" Johnston said.
Johnston also said he didn't think residents of San Francisco would be much disturbed by what the governor said.
"By and large San Franciscans have a good sense of humor and will not be dreadfully offended," Johnston said, adding that he wished people in politics would also "lighten up."
But the head of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force didn't see anything funny in the governor's comment and believed it to be anti-gay because of San Francisco's large gay population.
"It's extremely insulting," said Matt Foreman. "But of course I would say that gay people in Florida are far more endangered than gay people in California."
Bush told reporters he was just joking and added another quip: "Don't call Willie Brown."
Bush spokesman Jacob DiPietre later explained the governor's thinking: "The Cabinet was talking about endangered species and everyone knows that Republicans are an endangered species in California."
Bush has been amused by California before. In mid-August, the topic was Gary Coleman, the former child actor who jumped into the California gubernatorial recall race.
"I'm glad that Gary Coleman lives in California," Bush said. "A guy like me that believes in limited government probably would have a tough time against a fellow like that because he probably symbolizes smaller government."
Coleman took the comment in stride.
"I don't know about Jeb Bush," he said. "But if I become governor, I will represent the little guys, the people that big people tend to step on when they want to get somewhere."

What you probably encountered in the mission is the byproduct of a very intense drug user/dealer hot-spot.
There has been a mass exodus of people from SF. First the artists/bohemians/subculture ca. 96-97 (tho i have friends that will argue 91 when their 2 bedroom on mission/20th rent was raised from $125 to $150/mo.), and then again after the dotcom/tech bubble burst a couple years ago.
although there is still a healthy nightlife/culture, much of it has moved into low-exposure underground venues. certain areas that were goldmine real-estate for nightlife (broadway between kearny and columbus) now sit boarded up or if open, can be painfully empty (i'm thinking of that huge new bright blue japanese place in particular, someone needs to go by and tell them it's not 1997 anymore).
and dean is right, downtown LA at night has (not only great art installations) circa 5th/6th a very heavy homeless population... los angeles' infamous "skid row" (the origin of the phrase if i believe right).

He is in fact like a terrible sci-fi film's version of the Perfect Politician. He is the bad man taking control of Gotham while being secretly controlled by alien insects. He is the Mayor from Buffy.
Actually he's probably not as evil as his detractors would like us to believe, he's rather naive politically (his speech when he came in first in the election was so transparent, with it's hoard of multi-cultural faces behind him, and him pointing and saying, "look at this diversity!" yeesh!), and I could imagine a LOT worse (I don't think he'd be much of a change from Willie), but still, Gonzalez/Newsom is no contest in my mind. But there are more yuppies around here than you'd think and the populace still likes pretty people, and wants to hear someone say they'll clean up the buses and the streets even if they have no feasable plan to do so.
I live in Berkeley though where we have our own dippy mayor so I don't even really get to talk.

if you go the the monterey penisula (carmel, monterey, salinas), i recommend Cannery Row. The aquarium in Monterey is world famous (i like the jellyfish room, and i think you would too esp. if i'm picking up on what @d@m is saying) but that is frequented by tourists.
i have to warn you about downtown carmel, it's very stodgy and uptight for a bay area coastal town. overpriced martha stewart art galleries and men in pressed khakis and tucked in lacoste v-necks.
santa clara, ca is not only the computer capital of the world but also home to the winchester mystery house which was featured on an episode of That's Incredible.
Also featured on an episode of That's Incredible was the Santa Cruz Mystery Spot, a 150 foot diameter area that defies both physics and gravity.
20 mins. north of SF across the GG Bridge is John Muir Woods and about 10 minutes north you can drive to the top of Mt. Tamalpais for (on a clear day), some of the best views of the bay area.
Sacramento is about 80 miles east (1:15 with no traffic, Ja>Coloma is about 15 minutes north east of Sacramento and was home to Sutter's Mill where gold was found in 1848.Similar to the ghost towns of Coloma, about 10-15 minute walk from downtown SF you can find the Ghost Town Of The DotCom Boom, aka SOMA. If you go to Monterey there's a really great Hawaiian restaurant that you should check out, I completely forgot what it was called and how to get there, but they had sake martinis that were to die for. They also have an nice independent theater downtown (the Osio) and a bunch of crazy pubs that fill up with military jackasses every Friday at about 7pm. Good times.
Not far from Cannery Row is a sushi joint where they have a floating buffet revolving around on wooden otters. Also totally awesome.
Monterey in retrospect was really nice, but at the time I kind of hated it. Circumstances. Ugh.
The Mystery Spot is dumb. The Winchester house, OTOH, was a lot of fun and complete madness. Bitch was CRAZY. Of course it's a guided tour so be prepared to deal with that, our guide was a little obnoxious and seemed REALLY INTO the servant's wages and the economy of the day.
The aquarium is fantastic, I will agree.
My favorite parts of SF are all the touristy joints. The park, Japantown, and Haight street. Clubbing in SF south of Mission was never not fun. Though I definitely thought Berkeley was always worth a visit (even after they opened the bigger Amoeba on haight).

I believe that the mystery spot is a place where the laws of gravity appear not to apply, but actually it's a trick of the light/terrain or something? Yes, it's all in the same area around Fort McDowell. Here's a link to the map of the island if you're interested.
http://www.parks.ca.gov/pages/468/files/AngelIslandCamping.pdf
The beach we're talking about is Quarry Beach and it's on the East side of the island by the Sunrise sites 7,8, and 9.
But the really cool beach is Perles Beach on the South side of the island, right below the Ridge sites 4, 5, and 6. This is the beach that looks directly back on downtown SF and has an amazing view of the GG Bridge etc.
We were lucky enough to camp on Angel Island three times this year and each trip was amazing. I highly recommend the Ridge campgrounds and specifically sites 4 and 5.

Snoop Dogg, et al. have pilfered Bay Area hip-hop slang for years. No more.
BY ERIC K. ARNOLDeric.arnold@eastbayexpress.com
We pass new slang terms around like joints -- quietly, coyly, and informally. But that informality often clouds the issue of who first rolled the doobie in question. To this end, Bay Area hip-hop deserves a hell of a lot more credit.
The cultural significance of slang has only grown with the advent of the hip-hop era -- terms once far outside the mainstream's cultural nexus have become familiar, even ubiquitous. When Oakland rap group 3X Krazy was spitting out phrases like "Fa sheezy weezy in the keezy" (translation: "For certain, we feel at home") back in the mid-'90s, no one could've possibly predicted that nearly a decade later, Fran Drescher (TV's The Nanny) would one day say "Fa shizzle" in an Old Navy commercial.
Yes, the Yay Area is sick and tired of having its slang bitten, after years of local MCs watching helplessly as their regional expressions were co-opted by out-of-town rappers, talk-show hosts, celebrities, and even politicians: Who can ever forget the Reverend Jesse Jackson saying "Fa shizzle ma nizzle" at an awards show a few years back?
These days, terms like "It's all good" and "Off the hook" are as popular at sporting events as hip-hop shows. But that's just the tip of the iceberg. Girls Gone Wild and Soul Plane star Snoop Dogg hosts a TV show called Doggy Fizzle Televizzle, yet that terminology actually originated on the Oakland streets, and was later borrowed by Vallejo-based E-40 -- who credited 3X Krazy with "lacing" him back in 1996, noting the group "taught me how to say 'Fa sheezy. '"
Snoop is actually a repeat offender: Back when he was known as Snoop Doggy Dogg, he gaffled Too $hort's famous rallying cry, "Biiiiiiiiiitch!," as did numerous others, including E-40 and B-Legit, who at least introduced the clever variants "Bootch" and "Batch."(Another local alternate phrasing of the B-word is "Breezy," which sounds sophisticated, but isn't.)
More recently, Lil' Jon and the Ying Yang Twins had a platinum single with "Get Low," which happens to be the name of a Fillmore rap crew, the Get Low Playaz, who first popularized the term (and its corresponding dance) in 1994 with the song "Game Recognize Game." Similarly, terms such as "Pop yo' colla" and "Real talk" were an integral part of Yay Area slang years before they became national catchphrases.
With current Bay Area words like "Hyphy" -- a combination of "hype" and "fly" popularized by the Federation/E-40 song of the same name -- already making the national rounds, some local artists are taking the unusual step of attempting to copyright their original phrases before someone else does.
According to KPFA air personality and rapper T-Kash, speech that can be identified with an individual person or group has an inherent economic value: "It's not just slang. It's a commodity." He notes that Dephunk Gotti of Oaktown crew Products of My Environment has already copyrighted his favorite sayings ("Instantly" and "Buttlucker"), while Mistah Fab, another Oakland rapper, has done the same with "On-mamas" (derived from the ever-popular "I put that on my mama"). Mistah Fab has particular motivation to shield himself and his verbiage: His term "Nig-Latin," obviously affectionate in his case, was co-opted and used as a slur by white supremacist Web sites without his consent.
As Fab relates, he received an e-mail from a group based out of Montgomery, Alabama, which used "Nig-Latin" as an example of how "suburban youth has been corrupted" by black culture to the point where they "no longer speak proper English." His stunned reaction: "That tripped me out!" Slang, he explains, "is just the way we communicate," offering up a few choice examples: "Like 'Yurp,' when they say 'Yurple,' that's, like, marijuana. Like a person'll be like, man, you got some yurp? Some Barney? Barney is purple. Purple kush, you know what I mean?"
The incident spurred the rapper to look into protecting what he deemed his own linguistic innovations. After all, he wouldn't want the following scenario to become reality: "Say I'm in the studio with Snoop and I say, 'Man, pass me that Barney right now, let me get on space.' And he be like, 'Aw, that was clean,' and he comes out with a song called 'I'm Using Barney in Space.' Everybody gonna be like, 'Oh, Snoop crazy, Snoop came up with it. '"
As for Snoop's TV show, Fab says, "Aw, c'mon. 3X Krazy came out with that so long ago, 'Tribble ribble my nizzle,' you know, that's hilarious." By copyrighting his phrases, Fab thinks he can prevent that from happening to him: "C'mon, man, we plant this soil, we fertilized this soil, y'all grow up from our game, and then y'all don't even want to acknowledge the things we done gave y'all?"
Best of all, he says, it's free (or at least, relatively cheap) to make one's slang official. "It's basic copyright clauses," he explains. "You go get your paperwork, you send off your words -- at the most, it's gonna cost you about nine, ten dollars. You send that off, and once that's certified you, that's you."
Or is it? T-Kash points to the legal precedent set by sports announcer Michael Buffer, who trademarked the phrase "Let's Get Ready to Rrrrrrrrrumble" (or "LGRTR," as Buffer's Web site phrases it). Whenever "LGRTR" is uttered -- be it a pay-per-view boxing match, a NASCAR race, an episode of The Simpsons, or a Hollywood film like Ocean's Eleven -- Buffer is paid a licensing fee.
But Oakland-based entertainment attorney Michael Ashburne isn't so sure slang can be owned by anyone. Ashburne, who specializes in sampling and copyright issues in addition to representing numerous rappers (including the Hieroglyphics), says that for any given slang phrase, copyrighted or not, "for someone to have a case about the use of this word, you'd have to say, 'It was created in my song, I copyrighted the song, and you can't use that word."
The problem, he adds, is that "just by putting it in the song doesn't mean it takes it out of the public domain. Just because you heard something other people said and put it in your song doesn't necessarily give you the right to copyright it."
Ashburne speculates, however, that "If you called somebody by 'Fa Shnizzle,' and that was your name, and you performed in this area, then under common law, you could acquire rights to that name ... [if] people recognize you by that name." But the commonality of speech would make invention and ownership of slang difficult to prove. "I doubt very seriously that a slogan by itself could rise to the level of a protected trademark," he says.
And until a precedent is set by a court ruling -- as ultimately happened with sampling cases involving De La Soul and Biz Markie-- copyrighting slang will likely remain a gray area where the law is concerned. If E-40, for instance, found out someone else was using his slang even after he had it copyrighted, "he would have to find that it was worthwhile going after such a person and making an issue of it and going to court and getting a decision -- all of which happened on the sampling side," Ashburne explains. "The same process would have to take place before people would know the limits of how you could use a phrase that was trademarked by a rapper in connection with his goods and services. That's what would have to happen."
Let's hope it does, before we see the Nanny cooing over some low-rise cargo capri khakis: "That's hyphy! Ya smell me?"

Although as gygax says I don't "claim Berkeley", perhaps I shouldn't post on SF threads any more.

I second The Main. as above, as a practical matter, but Schwartz's has more of the "flavor" in terms of the experience.
― factcheckr, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 13:38 (seventeen years ago)
It also has longer lines. I went to Schwartz's once (it was amazing), but I ate at the Main twice (or maybe three times actually.) Ben's didn't rate at all although it had a nice decor.

Why do people from San Francsico think their city is on par with, say, New York City, London, and Tokyo? The place is tiny and would barely constitute a neighborhood in a borough of any actual, major city. Is it some kind-of weird West Coast thing?

i'm disappointed you don't already "know", this uncertainty is disconcerting.

y'know, I hate cops too but this is stupid
― No Broehner (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 20 July 2011 16:43 (fourteen years ago)
my favorite part was how the cops made all the Union Square stores lock up once the protesters were moving in that direction.
― sarahel, Wednesday, 20 July 2011 17:21 (fourteen years ago)
dude was out on a warrant, has residue on him, was seen firing the gun (gun was recovered), I mean seriously... this is not like a random beating at a traffic stop or shooting a naked unarmed guy
― No Broehner (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 20 July 2011 17:23 (fourteen years ago)
Rigorous inquiries should be made any time the cops draw, not to mention leathally use, their guns, but to be a priori prejudiced against the cops is little better than being a priori prejudiced for them; let the legal system work it out. If you disagree with that finding/verdict, that's a better time to protest.
― in an arrangement that mimics idiocy (Michael White), Wednesday, 20 July 2011 17:24 (fourteen years ago)
cops + forensics now indicating dude shot himself wtf
this is some weird shit
― No Broehner (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 22 July 2011 19:23 (fourteen years ago)
yeah... something's fishy there... gun was never recovered. SFPD claiming there is vast difference between .380 caliber and a .38 caliber (is there? I am ignorant).
― it's a meme i made and i like (Steve Shasta), Friday, 22 July 2011 19:33 (fourteen years ago)
SFPD uses .40 caliber
― No Broehner (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 22 July 2011 19:35 (fourteen years ago)
More than any other thing, all I keep thinking is this fool died for not paying $2.00. Great way to go on the lam, dude.
