"Detectives were today investigating an allegation that a group ofPremiership footballers sexually assaulted a teenager at a top Londonhotel. The 17-year-old girl reported the alleged attack to police incentral London at the weekend, Scotland Yard said.
The girl told police she consented to sex with a player from onePremiership club - but seven other footballers from anotherPremiership club then forced themselves on her. "We can confirm thatthe Metropolitan Police Service have received an allegation of rapefrom a 17-year-old female," said a Scotland Yard spokesperson. "Atthis stage it would be inappropriate to comment further."
No players or clubs have been named by the police in connection withthe allegation. None of the Premiership clubs contacted today were prepared to comment. "

Actually, that was my first thought when I read the story. Rape certainly isn't something to make light about, so I hope the accuser isn't making it up. If she isn't, footie reputation just landed deeper in the dump.

My concern would be that even if she's telling the truth it may not be possible to get evidence to prove it. Without prejudging things, the most stomach-churning thought is of this girl watching her rapists gloat in the media as their names are "cleared" and she is discredited as a liar.

Remember also that only one in a hundred rapes brought to police end in a conviction. You can even have a guy with priors and samples of his DNA etc in the frame and if it boils down to he said/she said, the CPS tends not to pursue the case. Two friends last summer had this happen to them and although they *were* raped, fuck all they could do about it.

The victim should be granted anonymity under the Sexual Offences (Amendment) Act 1976 (as altered by the Criminal Justice Act 1988).
Once the allegation of rape has been made (i.e. now) the victims name, address and picture must never be published during the victim's lifetime.
After a person has been accused of rape no matter at all relating to the victim may be published during their lifetime.
But ... since the 1988 amendment there is no anonymity for defendants in rape cases unless naming the defendant or defendants could lead to identification of the victim.
Under the Contempt of Court Act 1981 you should not publish names or details pertaining to an offence if "there is substantial risk of serious impediment or justice."
So basicaly they (and we) can name them if it doesn't lead to i-ding the girl and won't prejudice the trial. However the amount of 'they basically did it" feeling on this tread would count as an impediment if one of our readers got called for jury service. Also if they are found not guilty then you open up a whole horrible can of libel and defamation worms.

only another rumor of course, but I've seen it claimed that the victim was previously acquainted with some of the players, so naming potential defendants could lead to her being identified. (also: There have been no charges, right? The media certainly can't go around naming names at this point then, I wouldn't think.)

For the first time we can reveal how the Manchester United ace dramatically confessed to police that he enjoyed a "roasting" sex romp with the two girls who accused him of rape.
But Ronaldo, 20, swore it was all done with their consent. He told detectives his cousin was also there in his London hotel room and had sex with one of the girls.
He then described how they all went clubbing together afterwards.

The Portsmouth footballers were spoken to by officers after the women, who are in their early 20s, alleged they were sexually assaulted in a hotel room.
It is believed the women went back to the city's Ibis Hotel early on Saturday.
They then reported the alleged attack on Saturday afternoon.Police sealed off two 50pound-a-night rooms at the hotel as part of its investigation into the claims.
The players, who have not been named by police or the club, have not been arrested and have only made witness statements. They were spoken to by detectives on yesterday.
The rooms have now been examined by police to try to find out whether an attack took place.
Hampshire Police spokeswoman Meline Turkington today confirmed that three Portsmouth players had been spoken to by detectives.
But she confirmed they were not in the hotel room at the time of the alleged attack.
She said: "We have spoken to three players who have given witness statements. We don't identify witnesses.
"They haven't been arrested in connection with this at this time."We do not believe the players were in the room at the time of the alleged assault." Portsmouth players were on a break at the weekend as there was no match this Saturday due to FA cup fixtures.
The club said they were not identifying the players and were liaising closely with the police.
Helen Wood, spokeswoman for Portsmouth Football Club, said: "The players are giving witness statements, that's what it amounts to.
"For the moment that's pretty much it.
"They are witnesses not suspects. We do know (the identity of the players) but we won't disclose it at this time.
"We are liaising closely with the police." The investigation is being led by detectives at Portsmouth CID.
