Californians - I am getting ready to mock you

I look forward to your state becoming the laughing stock of the world should you elect Arnold Schwarzeneger as your Governor.

DV (dirtyvicar), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 10:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Arnold Gropeaneger

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 10:35 (twenty-one years ago)

That is his new name! Or Arnold Gropesalot Schwartzeneger.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 10:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Two 'g's, people. It helps not to look stupid when you set out to mock.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 11:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, spelling Shwazenburger wrong makes you look like a right tosser huh.

Alex K (Alex K), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 11:11 (twenty-one years ago)

When I said before I wanted Arnold to win, I was joking! I never would have said that in a million years if I believed it possible that people would be gullible enough to actually vote for him.

Nicolars (Nicole), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 11:14 (twenty-one years ago)

It's the groping stuff that's winning him the election - this will get flamed but, come on, there are bigger reasons for this lunk not to be made governor than the fact he's fondled people who, until now, never said a word, still less took legal action. Is that a wack thing to say?
Otherwise it's like: it was okay that Arnie was running for governor - until the groping thing. Feel me?

Enrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 11:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I am not mocking, I really couldn't care whether the guy wins or not, that was purely for my amusement!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 11:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Like you really need ARNIE to justify mocking the state?

kate (kate), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 11:21 (twenty-one years ago)

He is way more embarassing than Jesse "the Mind" Ventura or even Gopher from Love Boat.

Nicolars (Nicole), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 11:26 (twenty-one years ago)

...who both had records locally for public service/office-holding before going statewide. Jesse V was the mayor for a big working-class suburb in Minneapolis before running for governor. Minnesotans would not elect someone who couldn't demonstrate that!

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 11:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, we may be entering a very weird time in our history, but California is still the greatest state of all time ever, so all of you jealous harpies can shut up or BE TERMINATED

Vic (Vic), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 11:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Conan the Governor has dealt a blow to reality from which it may never recover. Seriously, WTF? I know this is old news but imagine going back in time and explaining to someone that Arnold is going to be governor and Twisted Sister is campaigning for him. And then you start terminating future resistance commanders while they are reeling from the mind fuck.

Dale the Titled (cprek), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 11:50 (twenty-one years ago)

At least he can never be president.

Nicolars (Nicole), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 11:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Does anyone else remember the Bonzo Goes To Washington jokes when Ronald Reagan ran for California governer? Who's laughing now?

(At least Arnie can never be president, since he was not born in the US. Is he aware of that?)

kate (kate), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 11:52 (twenty-one years ago)

he can be senator though, he's definitely been touted for that.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 11:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I hope someone'll take a pin and deflate him before that happens

Vic (Vic), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 11:58 (twenty-one years ago)

That implies he is filled with air instead of flab.

Nicolars (Nicole), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 11:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Why is he running on the Republican ticket? He married a Kennedy, didn't he? (Are Republicans the new Democrats? Are Lib Dems the new Tories? I'm so confused...)

kate (kate), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 12:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Black humor, folks. The whole recall was black humor and the punchline is about to be delivered.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 12:06 (twenty-one years ago)

TO MY HEAD.

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 12:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Why is Gary Coleman from Diff'rent Strokes so far behind in the polls?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 12:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Black humor, folks. The whole recall was black humor and the punchline is about to be delivered.

So this was just some reality TV show gone horribly, horribly wrong?

Dale the Titled (cprek), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 12:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I talked to a guy who works at the Home Depot near Culver City who said that Gary Coleman has a habit of coming in there and taking hardware tool items and tearing the price tags off of them and taking them to the return counter to try to get some $ by claiming he "lost his receipt" - he's supposedly done this multiple times!!! Bad Gary!!! Even though I'm curious to learn what his budget/deficit plans were gonna be..

Vic (Vic), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 12:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I actually wish Angelyne would have won just so we could finally SEE HER ENTIRE FACE

Vic (Vic), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 12:20 (twenty-one years ago)

(At least Arnie can never be president, since he was not born in the US. Is he aware of that?)

the constitution can be changed. they only brought in the two-term limit in the 1940s so it's not like it goes back to the founding fathers or anything.

DV (dirtyvicar), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 13:08 (twenty-one years ago)

The requirement that the President be a natural-born US citizen DOES go back to the founding fathers - it was in the original Constitution (see Article II, Section 1, Clause 5). Of course, that doesn't mean that it still couldn't be changed.

o. nate (onate), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 13:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha I like how my last post already assumes there's a winner. I'm not counting you out Angelyne, sorry!!!

Vic (Vic), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 13:16 (twenty-one years ago)

WE'RE NOT GONNA TAKE IT, ANYMOOOOOOOORE

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 13:20 (twenty-one years ago)

i so need to hear that at Club Freaky Trigger tomorrow night - request goin out to the DJ seen

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 13:20 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't think this is the last time something this odd will happen in the U.S. i think having celebrities running for political office will certainly become the greatest extention of the celebrity endorsement for non-celebrity candidates.. make the candidate the celebrity!

in the same way that George Foreman "became" the grill, you can have the Ben Affleck Governor or the Harvey Keitel Senator.

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 13:42 (twenty-one years ago)

or the Steve Buscemi Treasurer

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 13:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Sen. Lieberman: "Wow, this no-call list initiative is groundbreaking work, never have the two parties worked together so confidently on passing a piece of legislation."

Sen. Keitel: "Let's not go sucking each other's dicks just yet Joe."

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 13:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Nickalicious I kiss thee.

So this was just some reality TV show gone horribly, horribly wrong?

You watched it on TV, didn't yer?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 14:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I actually wish Angelyne would have won just so we could finally SEE HER ENTIRE FACE

Surely that would be the 7th sign?

There are some things too horrible to even contemplate. This is one of them.

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 15:16 (twenty-one years ago)

The requirement that the President be a natural-born US citizen DOES go back to the founding fathers - it was in the original Constitution (see Article II, Section 1, Clause 5). Of course, that doesn't mean that it still couldn't be changed.

sorry... I come from an alternate universe where Arnie has been President for two terms already and is seeking an amendment to run for a third. that was the rule I was thinking of, not the one that is actually relevant here on Earth 1.

DV (dirtyvicar), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 15:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I actually wish Angelyne would have won just so we could finally SEE HER ENTIRE FACE

It shall never happen. She would have to reassemble it first, and several of the remnants were lost in her last move when the jar broke.

Aimless, Tuesday, 7 October 2003 15:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, it's such an exciting time to have just moved to California. It's like a non-stop street party. I can't wait until the next recall!

adaml (adaml), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 15:38 (twenty-one years ago)

on the bright side McClintock has no chance of winning even if the recall passes (and I don't think it will). Schwartzenegger is a puppet and at least he has Warren Buffet as an advisor so maybe it wouldn't be the end of the universe. As far ask kate's question goes: Schwartzenegger has always been a Republican albeit a moderate one, maria shriver is suffering dementia from having not eaten solid for seven or eight years. The worst hell would be to suffer through 2 and a half years of Terminator one-liners. And if he loses I do not want to hear him say "I'll be back" because I might groan myself to death.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 15:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, it's such an exciting time to have just moved to California. It's like a non-stop street party. I can't wait until the next

Same time, next October?

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 16:45 (twenty-one years ago)

If Arnold wins I'm becoming to walk away from irony and absurdity completely and become an architect that only does modernist skyscrapers because the whole thing crosses some kind of line, and I rarely draw lines. Also, should he win I'll be moving to NYC.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 16:54 (twenty-one years ago)

If Arnold wins, we should all follow Spencer's lead and engage in brutal acts of guerilla grammar. ;-)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 16:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Abandoning the state doesn't sound like the plan for me. Now, if he says something like there are too employees in the UC system and they should all be canned, I might reconsider.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 16:59 (twenty-one years ago)

the stories about his supporters physically roughing up people on the other side -- nuns, candidates, you name it -- are making me ill. is this a prelude to 2004? why is no one making noise about it, when that wellstone memorial service got so much coverage? is thuggery okay, because it comes along with catchy trailer-phrases?

and let's not even mention the other pieces, like the washington post story where some 22-year-old chirpy said that arnold can 'grope me anytime!' i swear to god i can't believe these people actually exist, just like when i read the letters mark morford excerpts in his morning call newsletter.

ugh.

maura (maura), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 17:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow! What the hell was I talking about???

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 17:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, should he win I'll be moving to NYC.

Bloomberg is hardly a better option, Chow.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 17:02 (twenty-one years ago)

My rambling post sounds like I just did an eightball or something - Jesus.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 17:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Now, if he says something like there are too employees in the UC system and they should all be canned, I might reconsider

You're assuming that he'll care enough to want thousands of irate UC employees hungry for his head? Rule# 1001: "Don't offend a large group of constituents to their faces..."

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 17:06 (twenty-one years ago)

ha ha yeah I was totally just gonna post:

"I'll have whatever Spencer's on."

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 17:06 (twenty-one years ago)

That's what he's been doing the whole time, I should note.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 17:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Large group of constituents: Hey! Our faces are up here, buddy!

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 17:23 (twenty-one years ago)

What kind of California doesn't elect Gary Coleman!?! Not the California TV has taught me to love.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 17:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Whatchoo talkin' bout, Nick?

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 17:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I think that Californians have trouble identifying with Coleman since Diff'rent Strokes and most of his best movies (The Kid From Left Field, anyone?) were set in New York.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 17:35 (twenty-one years ago)

My friends saw Gary Coleman fall asleep sitting in a chair at the Hard Rock Cafe in LA a couple months ago. I mean, how much more electable can you get!?!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 17:39 (twenty-one years ago)

gary coleman made a terrible impression when he was on Star Dates: whiney, self-pitying, egotistical, know-it-all. Everything the guy who played Rerun wasn't! And Rerun looked like was gonna get some. Gary went home alone.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 17:39 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost

This is true if by 'electable' you mean 'adorable'.

Dale the Titled (cprek), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 17:40 (twenty-one years ago)

That's what he's been doing the whole time, I should note.

There's a difference between offending a state of individuals and an organised set of people. (UC employees do have organisation, last I recall.) No impending politician wants to have a union against them, due to a particular cause.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 17:42 (twenty-one years ago)

There's a difference between offending a state of individuals and an organised set of people.

Remind me to include the smiley more in future.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 17:45 (twenty-one years ago)

that reminds me of a hilarious Dave Chappelle bit about how Sesame Street teaches kids to hate homeless people:
"Why are you such a Grouch, Oscar?"
"Bitch, I live in a garbage can!"
"Get it together, Grouch."
"Yeha, get a job, Grouch"

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 17:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Meanwhile, one side-effect of an Arnold victory is pretty interesting.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 18:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Holy shit Chris I had no idea about that. Wow.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 18:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Who occupies the California governor's office will affect Bush's chances in 2004. It's the biggest electoral college plum. Just by capturing the office, the Republicans can control the issues that are discussed and the terms in which they they are presented.

That's FAR more important to them than fixing the state budget deficit. Ah-nold can't fix it anyway. But he can very conveniently and plausibly blame Davis and avoid having to do anything of substance until well after the next election. Meanwhile, he can swing his dick in national presidential politics.

Aimless, Tuesday, 7 October 2003 18:46 (twenty-one years ago)

But he can very conveniently and plausibly blame Davis and avoid having to do anything of substance until well after the next election. Meanwhile, he can swing his dick in national presidential politics.

According to Chris' article, it sounds like Arnold should be used to bending over backwards to please, anyway. However, it should be a few hours before we know who wins. I really doubt he'll win though: celebrities are fun to cheer/jeer but I doubt this is like Tammany Hall: Arnold has some sense. If the man is savvy enough to run his movie career to the tune of $10 mil, he won't allow anyone to use him as a figurehead.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 18:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Ah-nold won't be a figurehead, by any stretch. He has a good grasp of the basics of power and cutting deals, even if he has but few and patchy ideas on public policy. I think his interest in setting policy will never extend beyond simple pragmatics, because he isn't a subtle man. But I do expect he will rule the roost in the governor's office and quickly break anyone he thinks isn't serving his interests. It's just that I think his main interest in politics is swinging his dick.

Aimless, Tuesday, 7 October 2003 19:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Is there any other reason people get into politics (not only being semi-facetious here: I really don't understand why some people want to get into the game. I find that the people attracted to politics are generally the least psychologically suited to the job of holding office).

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 19:36 (twenty-one years ago)

um, to serve the public?

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 19:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Mock me and I'll cockpunch you. However, my vote can be had for $5 and a 12 pack of Rolling Rock.

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 19:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Then Gary would have problemz buying your vote...he still gets carded!!!!!!!

Vic (Vic), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 19:56 (twenty-one years ago)

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 20:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 21:22 (twenty-one years ago)

In my naive way I had assumed that Schwarzenegger would have been trying to impress upon the electorate that he was a serious politician by playing down his action movie career. Now I learn that he has been peppering every speech with references to terminating things and saying "hasta la vista, baby" a lot. Good grief.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 21:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Of course I would have nothing but respect for Gary Coleman if I found out he had been saying "Whatchoo talkin' about, Arnie?" all the time.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 21:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Nicolars (Nicole), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 21:33 (twenty-one years ago)

HA! Depends on whose irony tickles you more: the pseudo-ernest millionaire....or broke former child star

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 21:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe, just maybe this won't happen.. one can hope. I did read in a blog comment that a conservative talk radio host in CA was reminding his listeners again and again to vote on the recall, because he got numerous e-mails and phone calls from people who'd been so excited to vote for Arnold, they forgot to vote on question 1.

daria g (daria g), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 22:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I just read - and forgive me for being ignorant on this 'til now - that Gary himself said he's going to vote for Arnold, instead of himself. Gary, how could you?! Who else is going to vote for you if you don't...?

I think if Arnold wins the Democratic leadership of the state should just announce really, really loudly: OK ARNOLD, go ahead! You've got it! So fix everything! Good luck! Governate that budget and cut all the taxes and make all those vague sweeping changes you said you would! In about a year everyone is gonna despise this man and I guess it doesn't bode well for Bush if voters want change no-matter-what.. or is it the other way around?

You know, I guess as a liberal I'm supposed to have a charitable view of humanity in general but sometimes I think most people are total fucking morons.

daria g (daria g), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 01:18 (twenty-one years ago)

There was this lady on NPR that they interviewed on why she supported Arnold and she says, well, he's a strong leader and he's going to bring change and he's against the special interests, and the charges are just "puke politics" and the fault of the media, which is to the letter exactly what Arnold's said, and just as devoid of meaning. .

These are the kind of people that get angry and petulant when you ask them to think about anything. But enough of this giving actual reasons for supporting a candidate nonsense, from now on I will no longer trouble myself with such questions and only direct my attention to professional sports. Go Redskins. Cowboys suck. Yankees suck. Boston-Chicago World Series, that's all I want.

Girolamo Savonarola, Wednesday, 8 October 2003 02:27 (twenty-one years ago)

This reminds me of the scene in "Delerious" when Eddie Murphy is doing the bit about the rednecks who get drunk on election day and vote Jesse Jackson for President just because they think it would be funny, only to wake up the next day and realize that he actually won.

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 02:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 02:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Sure did seem like a huge turnout at my polling station, but this being the first election since I've moved precincts, I have no way of accurately judging. Let's see how many of these folks actually vote next year as well.

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 04:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Really didn't expect Davis's political career to end this way. I wasn't predicting he would necessarily progress up the political ladder eventually -- never struck me as Presidential, *maybe* senatorial I dunno. For a guy who played 1998's campaign just so, this has to hurt.

Well, at least now the petition to recall Schwarzanegger can start tomorrow, and this can all happen again. and again. and...

I strongly suspect there's going to be some sort of drive to revise the recall rules/approach, actually. But we'll see!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 04:10 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm not crying tears for Davis.. in the same way that i'm not crying tears for Gore. Sure, Davis was cursed with problems that are Wilson legacy, but also created other problems himself. Davis was pretty cocky during this whole debacle and while I can't entirely blame him, i hope this is a lesson to other Dems in the country. (besides many other lessons about California that i'm not going to touch on right now)

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 04:16 (twenty-one years ago)

jackson anderville, Wednesday, 8 October 2003 10:12 (twenty-one years ago)

How can you take politics seriously and have hope for social change and innovation and progress, when the country is busy electing Arnold? Doesn't it sort of completely demean all idealistic or even honest political views & arguments?

Like OK, it's nice to debate about whether the death penalty is good or bad but it's sort of useless and irrelevent when if there was ever a proposition on it the country would probably vote to kill people on live TV by drowning them in vats of raw eggs. No?

Reminds me of a story Stripey likes to tell -- when she was visiting the UK with her family in the eighties, they met a couple who, upon learning Stripey and co. were Americans, proceeded to complain vociferously about Reagan and how awful we Americans were to have elected him and more besides, as if it was Stripey's family's fault he was in office.

Quoth Stripey: "So you voted for Thatcher, then?"

The rant suddenly ended at that point.

Vic (Vic), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 13:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I will remain in California rather than move away because all the other good states are being run by Republicans already anyway. I don't know what this means, but it does mean he has 2 and a half years to do what he said he'd do or he won't win re-election. I keep repeating to myself "at least it isn't McClintock" and "he still has to work with Bustamante and a Democratic legislature" and "not all Republicans are far right despots" but these pictures of Arnold staring down in front of grandiose flags look like the scene from some particularly horrifying Philip K Dick-based film.

Davis did himself no favors and was almost completely invisible through this entire process and if nothing else I'm hoping that Camejo and Huffington sufficiently poked at the Dems to make them realize they have to speak to a broader base rather than rest on their laurels and only listen to their special interests. I do hope the MSNBC article is right and this signals a change in politics whereby voters are energized by personalities, because this could mean an easy win for Clark or Dean over Bush (but not Kerry, my god, I tried to watch him do a town hall thing last night on CSPAN and he almost put me to sleep. And he's always licking his lips like a lizard. Ick. He looks like your old transvestite uncle.)

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 13:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Spot on. Remember, Davis was the guy who said he would fight like a Bengal tiger for his job, then had to face the fact that he was being rubbished, to the point where the no-on-recall campaign focused more on Bustamente instead of him, and essentially folded. Bustamente now becomes the top Democrat in the state office hierarchy by default, which might or might not be a liability depending on how the next few years go.

SF County (city proper) voted 80% against the recall.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 15:16 (twenty-one years ago)

General summary here.

I note dryly that the same electorate which apparently should be punished severely for its stupidness in recalling Davis and electing Arnie resoundingly rejected Prop 54 by a nearly two/one majority, a decision that most everyone here would applaud. (I was glad to see it get defeated myself.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 15:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Americans are amusing until you realise they kinda have some influence with the rest of the world and then the whole pledging allegiance, spending billions on space programmes when your poor are starving to death and voting in B-rate actors suddenly seems really scary.

Fuggs (Fuggs), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 16:07 (twenty-one years ago)

ok, here's a question for californians' only: did arnie campaign as a republican or just as a vaguely populist 'candidate of change'? was he just a republican nominally or did republican issues/stances actually have alot of bearing on how he campaigned/stump speeches/etc.? did he commit himself to anything policy-wise (no new taxes, no budget cuts, whatever) that might trip him up? people who voted for him - were they genuinely voting republican or were they just happening to vote republican?

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 16:08 (twenty-one years ago)

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 16:18 (twenty-one years ago)

blount: he ran as a populist and no, i don't think most people who voted for him voted for him because of his party affiliations. being registered and running as a republican gave him more "credibility" though (had he run as an independant I don't think he would have won because the republican party wouldn't have backed him, and bustamente probably would have wound up winning if the recall passed). So, as such, I don't see this as the rebirth of california conservativism on the part of the voters. If he swings too far right and starts decimating services he won't win re-election.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 16:29 (twenty-one years ago)

He went out of his way to not discuss policy at all.

Sam J. (samjeff), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 16:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Anthony OTM. McClintock was very much the hard right/conservative candidate in this election and played that up big time -- and got thumped as well as eventually cut out by his own party (though notably this only happened a week or two ago, so clearly some bets were being hedged). It's actually an interesting question about Arnie going independent because I still think he would have won, though with a lesser amount of the vote -- exit polls indicate that the number of Democrats or self-described liberals voted for Arnie on a three out of ten basis.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 16:36 (twenty-one years ago)

GoodBYE Calum.

RE policy- I heard on NPR this morning that Arnie wants to triple the auto tax. That's the only specific thing I heard.

You sure about that? I thought the whole idea was that he was trashing that move (which was instituted by Davis to plug the budget hole). However, if he's now changing his mind after election, well then. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 16:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Davis would have won if he had backed the repeal of the hike in the automobile registration tax. That's like several hundred dollars to many many people.

(also, note that the tax was initiated back in the day by Republican Pete Wilson!)

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 17:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't believe how dull Gray Davis is. One did have the impression he kinda gave up weeks ago, in interviews he'd say stuff like, "I hope the voters will allow me to stay in office.." etc. Jeez. If he had just stood up a couple times and said, look, my opponent is an inexperienced egomaniacal fascist misogynist idiot who doesn't know the first thing about how to govern and is bought and paid for by corporate special interests like ENRON.. or SOMETHING. . If you don't throw down the gauntlet during a recall when you're about to lose yr job to a B-list actor when do you? At least lose with style.

Arnold delivering his populist message on the radio now.. sounds like he took a page out of Dean's playbook.

ok, here's a hypothetical - if a democrat (and not neccesarily a heavyweight, I know feinstein coulda crushed arnie) more charismatic and passionate than bustamante or davis (tall order I know) and maybe slightly 'outsider'ish had run, would arnie still have won? (I guess what I'm asking is would arnie have beat jerry brown?)

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 17:37 (twenty-one years ago)

dan (dan), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 17:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Jerry Brown? *scratches head* Hmmm...that would have been a weird twist, that's for sure. Would have siphoned off some support but unless he was the sole Democratic candidate and he could *really* pump up the charisma and policy, probably wouldn't have succeeded.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 17:44 (twenty-one years ago)

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 17:49 (twenty-one years ago)

This is an insightful article from TNR's website about what kind of deep shit Arnie can expect to find himself in soon.

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 19:40 (twenty-one years ago)

the "auto tax" (which is actually just your registration fee) has already been tripled. That's why I made sure to buy a car four months ago rather than now. It will be repealed and would have probably been repealed anyway by Davis even if he hadn't been recalled, because people were REALLY PISSED OFF about it.

Davis is probably relieved to not be governor any more. "You want to captain this sinking ship? Good fucking luck, sucker."
