The person who grabbed that ball would've been killed at Yankees Stadium.

Ally-zay, Wednesday, 15 October 2003 01:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Fuck you, "Ann."

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 01:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Still got game 7. Still got game 7 *repeat ad infinitim while rocking back and forth and staring into space*

Yankees-Cubs world series, I still say.

Ally-zay, Wednesday, 15 October 2003 02:02 (twenty-two years ago)

todd swiss (eliti), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 02:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, god, now I've morphed into Ally-zay and a goat... I don't like where this is headed...

Ann Sterzinger (Ann Sterzinger), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 02:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Man, it's gonna be a rough day at school tomorrow for somebody.

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 02:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I dunnae think she was talkin' to me. Though if she WAS you better believe I'm gon KICK HER ASS when I see her next!! BEYOTCH!

Ally-zay, Wednesday, 15 October 2003 02:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Well it's fine as long as Ann/Brian is not pretending to be two people agreeing with yourself. That bugs me.

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 02:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Now I'm a hermaphrodite. Thanks a LOT.

ACtually, thanks sincerely -- now I can put my dick in that kid's eye!

PS It was a real mistake to cut the hair.

This thread gives me absolutely no consolation regarding tonight's game.

Someone send Alex Gonzalez Bill Buckner's phone number. Maybe he can get some advice.

Well, you know, at least they kicked the Braves' ass. Arguably because the Braves are the biggets chokers of all--but still.

brian nemtusak (sanlazaro), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 03:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm waiting for the "Fuck You Texas Rangers" moment for Pudge. You know he wants to.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 03:59 (twenty-two years ago)

And when might that happen, exactly?

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 04:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Hopefully while he's hoisting the World Series MVP award (though I'm rooting for the Cubs, and then the Red Sox in the Series, Pudge getting WS MVP would be great).

"Tom Hicks refused to re-sign me, because I was washed up. Tom Hicks can suck it!"

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 04:12 (twenty-two years ago)

If he could take a shot at the local sportswriters who tried to gang up on him, too, that'd be great. "Oh, Pudge is bad for pitchers, he calls bad games to help his stolen base stats."

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 04:13 (twenty-two years ago)

HOLY SHIT - did they actually say that?

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 04:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, yeah, I saw that in both the local dailies. But only, of course, after Pudge was gone.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 04:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Arguably because the Braves are the biggets chokers of all--but still.

The Braves are the only team to ever come back from being down 3-1 in a series.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 04:50 (twenty-two years ago)

if your were to multiply the number of world series the cubs and red sox have won in the past fifty years times a million it still wouldn't equal the number of world series the braves have won in the past ten years

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 04:57 (twenty-two years ago)

or the number of world series the marlins will win this year

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 05:30 (twenty-two years ago)

from the above story on bookies:

"You don't get grief for being a Cubs fan," Jones said about her new life in Las Vegas. "You get grief for being a Bears fan, because they don't win."

huh? i seem to recall the bears winning a superbowl in the 80s...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 10:30 (twenty-two years ago)

"Still got game 7. Still got game 7"

That's probably what Red Sox were saying in 86.

At least Gonzales actually has driven in some runs in this series, unlike Leon Durham who couldn't drive in a needed run AND would boot a play to lose a game. (Mind you, Durham was the reason that the Cubs traded Buckner to the Red Sox.)

The first time I ever got drunk was at my cousins wedding reception in 84, I was 14 and got blammoed stealing drinks off of tables after seeing Lee Smith gave up that gopher ball to Steve Garvey on the TV in the lobby.

earlnash, Wednesday, 15 October 2003 11:31 (twenty-two years ago)

You Cubs fans can console yourself with the fact that at least they're not the Tigers.

But the Tigers are just plain terrible -- they don't toy with you.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 13:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Leee (Leee), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 19:46 (twenty-two years ago)

The Tigers also won a World Series more recently than the Cubs.

hstencil, Wednesday, 15 October 2003 19:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Everyone has won a World Series more recently than the Cubs. Including the Sox. Both of 'em.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 19:52 (twenty-two years ago)

But the Tigers won it in 1984, which is at least within my lifetime.

hstencil, Wednesday, 15 October 2003 20:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm feeling bad for him now too ... I still think it was a dopey move, but jesus. What the fuck does he do now? And really, even if he did 'open the door,' it's true, the Cubs barreled through it all by themselves.

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 16 October 2003 03:53 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, but it was the only world championship they'd won in 100+ years of existence. not to mention that they shoulda won in 1983 and 1993 (1916 and 1950, too, but that's way before my time).

Little Big Macher (llamasfur), Thursday, 16 October 2003 03:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I seem to remember the Orioles being pretty overwhelming favorites in 1983.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 16 October 2003 03:59 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, wasn't it a sweep?
and jack morris killed them in 93. jack should be in the hall of fame.

keith (keithmcl), Thursday, 16 October 2003 04:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Are you all 80 or something? What the hell?

Ally-zay, Thursday, 16 October 2003 04:03 (twenty-two years ago)

the phils won game one in 1983, then got swept in the remainder. i guess the orioles were the "favorites," but yer favorite is who you root for (not who the oddsmakers tell you the favorite is).

Little Big Macher (llamasfur), Thursday, 16 October 2003 04:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Keith, Morris was '89. Not sure if he's a hall-o-famer, but he is in MY heart (pitched the only no-hitter I ever watched from start to finish; thank you, Jack).

Cubs fans, you truly have my sympathy. I watched a 50 year-old man cry tonight; that was truly uncomfortable. One of my best friends lucked into tickets through the company lottery for tonight's game; I was honestly hoping for her to have a wonderful, wonderful time.

All I can say is, frankly, those players blew it last night. Gonzalez and Farnsworth really need to be the focus of any scorn.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 16 October 2003 04:10 (twenty-two years ago)

um, mr. diamond, did you mean 1984? (unless morris was an Oakland A in 1989?) and keith's right -- morris was a blue jay in '93.

Little Big Macher (llamasfur), Thursday, 16 October 2003 04:13 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, that's right. the eternal equation for baseball fans. :-)

Little Big Macher (llamasfur), Thursday, 16 October 2003 04:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Tad, Morris was in MINNESOTA in '89.

So, lose the hstencil-style "uh".

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 16 October 2003 04:15 (twenty-two years ago)

minnesota didn't do nothing in 89 cept suck on oakland exhaust fumes

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 16 October 2003 04:16 (twenty-two years ago)

but jack morris didn't pitch in the '93 series ... he did in '91 (he killed the braves) and the '92 series (he got killed by the braves).

Little Big Macher (llamasfur), Thursday, 16 October 2003 04:17 (twenty-two years ago)

god those 89 A's - Now THAT was a ballclub, not like these modern day punks with their Farnsworths and their Simon Reynolds

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 16 October 2003 04:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh wait, fuckit; you're absolutely correct. My bad. I got '89 confused with '91.

haha. fucking cubs. can't say i was sad to see you go (felicity, i still love you tho, i promise). rather than pay attention to the game i got wicked drunk with a country teaser and went to a LAME LAME LAME spin party where they were sobbing crocodile tears for the cubbies (cubs love = indie fux0rism confirmed!!!!) while i laughed and drank as many free drinks as possible. jesus i'm drunk. and i start working tomorrow!!! anyway. if josh beckett swung his dick my way right now, i'd surely suck it. is that too much information? fucking assholes.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Thursday, 16 October 2003 04:46 (twenty-two years ago)

bbt: suck a fuck

chuck klosterman spent the night in the corner of a booth. i wanted to throw copies of the ny press at him! and fucking ryan adams was there. why have i been pitching spin again???

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 16 October 2003 04:48 (twenty-two years ago)

is pitching spin like pitching woo?

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 16 October 2003 04:48 (twenty-two years ago)

BBT, I'm really having a real, real, tough time of it right now. One of my best friends copped tickets for tonight's game, plus had a bead on tix for a potential game 4 at Wrigley; I was totally, totally rooting for the Cub tonight, in spite of myself.

I really, really do feel bad for all the true, die-hard Cub fans. I feel bad for J0hn Darnielle. I feel bad for felicity. I really, REALLY do. I know what it means to see your team be the target of scorn for their futility. I watched that bastard 2001 Chicago White Sox team piss away a golden opportunity. When the Detroit Red Wings lost to the Colorado Avalanche in the Western Conference Finals of the 1996 playoffs, I thought I WOULD DIE. I had NEVER felt such depression (I actually did feel worse depression since, if you really must know). Next year, the Wings won it all. Anyway, forgive me if I don't have too much sympathy for the corny indy fuxx who have suddenly risen up expressing their undying love for "the cubbies".

As I mentioned above, I watched a 50+ year-old man cry tonight. That totally broke my heart. It honestly did; Martin was his name; unbelievably gentle, nice guy - the kind of guy I would love to have for a life-long friend; I hope to meet up with this wonderful gentlemen again at some point. I realy do feel for all TRUE Cub fans. All the frat boys, of course, can rot in hell; (the guys that will forget about it tomorrow and look for the next woman they can rape). All the frat boy Cub fans can rot in fucking hell for the derision - and GOD HELP US THAT IS ALL - they will continue to rain down on that poor, poor life-long Cub fan from game 6.

BUT ... ALL That said... This World Series should be AMAZING!!

How ABOUT this BECKETT!!! Un-fucking-believeable!!! God-bless-you Beckett (no, not because you beat the Cubs, but because you put in one of the most AMAZING performances by a pitcher in a post-season EVER!).

See. here's the thing. bandwagoners go home. fans of baseball meet on common ground and say, "hey, fellow fan-of-baseball! Josh Beckett! Miguel Cabrera!!! Ivan Rodriguez!!!!"

I mean, I'm sorry, I can't convey the kind of excitement that comes from watching other individuals perform at the top of their abilities - I'm not a sports reporter; I'm just a dork on a message board - but FUCK ME I am as excited for a world series as I've ever been. This Marlins team is brilliant to watch. Just brilliant.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 16 October 2003 04:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Yanc3y, seriously, it's time for you to go to bed.

Ally-zay, Thursday, 16 October 2003 04:50 (twenty-two years ago)

ok. so mr. diamond's dick can now go in the josh-beckett-i-would-suck-it-file. i love you!!!

xpost!

ally! i love you too!!!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 16 October 2003 04:52 (twenty-two years ago)

(xpost, but what the hell:)

I don't get the hate. Am I terribly naive? I understand the attitude that Cubs fans = Goose Island-swilling, Big 10 alumni, yuppie bandwagoneers, and that the Sox are a perfectly good team that doesn't get its props because it's on the south side and it's not in bed with the Trib. But why wouldn't you want the Cubs to succeed once they're in the post-season and the Sox are not? If for no other reason than to see the underdog win! Is this a corny indie fuxxor thing to say? Okay, fine, then I've been a corny indie fuxxor since I was 9 years old. Because, hey, I want the Red Sox to win, too.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 16 October 2003 04:58 (twenty-two years ago)

mr diamond: i can appreciate the emotion, even if i don't feel it myself wr2 the teams in the series (or, in the case of the AL, the teams likely to be in the series). so seriously, enjoy watching this year's series.

Little Big Macher (llamasfur), Thursday, 16 October 2003 04:59 (twenty-two years ago)

You're right, Diamond -- it may just take a day or two before I can muster any enthusiasm for the Marlins.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 16 October 2003 05:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Yanc3y will you come suck my dick too? I have Josh Hartnett's coke.

Ally-zay, Thursday, 16 October 2003 05:03 (twenty-two years ago)

YES!!! swing it my way!!! but yes, yr right ms. penis & hancer, it's time for bed. much love to my conine-having marlins! much consolation to my felicity-loving cubbies!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 16 October 2003 05:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know what to tell to you, Jaymc.

If you can't appreciate what Josh Beckett JUST DID, if you can't appreciate what Miguel Cabrera just did ...

I mean, I have never, NEVER!!! seen a perfomance lick Beckett's.

That was just fucking unbelievable. THAT is something to get behind. THAT is something get excited about, if you are any kind of fan of sports; in terms of sports being real human beings, competing on a real playing field. Think about what it must be like to be this kid Josh Beckett. THINK about that!! Josh Beckett!! Think about that poor fuckwad Derek Lee - the focus of SO MUCH derision from Marlins fans - FINALLY coming through...

You bet your sweet ass I'm rootin' for those Marlins. Oh, yes I am. They are an AMAZING team to watch. I love their moxie. I love the pure BALLS of McKeon to throw BECKETT out there for what, 4 innings??!! That's insane!!

Go Marlins!!!!!!

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 16 October 2003 05:11 (twenty-two years ago)

No, I do appreciate it, of course I mean, Cabrera even had a couple of great catches tonight -- esp. for someone who'd only played three prior games in right field! But that appreciation is fairly dissociated from my emotions right now, is all I'm saying.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 16 October 2003 05:17 (twenty-two years ago)

[of course. I mean,]

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 16 October 2003 05:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, Go Marlins and shit. Pudge is unbelievable.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 16 October 2003 05:18 (twenty-two years ago)

(twirls finger)

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 16 October 2003 05:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Did I miss out on Y's lovefest?

Leee (Leee), Thursday, 16 October 2003 05:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Also JMC, I'm totally feeling where you are right now. The feeling will turn soon enough, doubly quick if the Yankkkees advance.

Leee (Leee), Thursday, 16 October 2003 05:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Wait, why if the Yankees advance?

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 16 October 2003 05:24 (twenty-two years ago)

(I was sort of rooting for the Red Sox, in a "if the Cubs can't lift their curse..." way.)

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 16 October 2003 05:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I was assuming Yankees hate was universal (save for some aberrant perps here), which at this point has resumed its place in my heart.

Leee (Leee), Thursday, 16 October 2003 05:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Fuck! Kenan, I waited a bit, then had another drink across the street ... er, Green Mill?

jackson anderville, Thursday, 16 October 2003 05:36 (twenty-two years ago)

If the Yankees win, I'm theirs this year.

jackson anderville, Thursday, 16 October 2003 05:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Next day thoughts:

It still hasn't quite sunk in that they lost. I mean, how? There's something almost unreal about it. They HAD it. Where did it go?

Rationally, we all know where it went -- there was that awful eighth inning, and then last night there was Wood giving up seven earned runs (earned runs, no less!) and Dusty leaving him there to do it. The Cubs don't need a new bullpen, they need a new goddamn manager. I'd like to thump his melon.

And then on the other hand, if I had been pulling for the Marlins, which I hadn't because I'm an indie fuxor and there's just too much romance at stake not to pull for the Cubs, but if I had been, I would be thrilled beyond thrilled. What a great team. Beckett was a marvel, and Miguel Cabrera is the most adorable thing ever to play great baseball. It's impossible not to like these guys. They're so nice, so well-meaning, so clean, so talented, so... good. Face it, Chicago, the Marlins are very very good. I thought I wouldn't watch the World Series if the Cubs lost, but I can't help it. I'm no hardcore loyalist. I've come around to Diamond's way of thinking. I just want to see people play baseball, and play it well.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Thursday, 16 October 2003 12:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I want to see people play baseball, and play it poorly, and be violent babies about it and fight and hit each other. For example, tonight's game.

Ally-zay, Thursday, 16 October 2003 12:51 (twenty-two years ago)

The Cubs don't need a new bullpen, they need a new goddamn manager. I'd like to thump his melon.

I can't abide this line of thought. Dusty has been very, very good throughout the season, and is a big part of how the team went from a 67-95 record last year to the NLCS this year.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 16 October 2003 14:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Leee, you mean I'll become a Marlins fan in a Marlins-Yankees series? Yeah, probably. Not sure about Marlins-Red Sox, though.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 16 October 2003 14:19 (twenty-two years ago)

i asked my indians fan friend who he'll root for in a marlins-yanks world series (cuz there's nothing tribe fans hate more than those two teams and joey belle). his response: "the planes to crash."

and why hasn't jeffrey maier been mentioned in this cub fan hubbub??? that was an even worse fuckup by a fan!!!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 16 October 2003 14:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I want to see people play baseball, and play it poorly, and be violent babies about it and fight and hit each other.

Meh, we got elections for that. Baseball is _serious_.

Hunter (Hunter), Thursday, 16 October 2003 14:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Tad sez: this is why chicago sucks, in comparison to either NYC or Philly -- 'cause in either of those two cities, the person who grabbed the ball would have been killed or would have to leave town with private (not police) escort. dusty baker was right.

I'm sure some people are consulting the northwest suburban mafia already. It will take time for them to execute the perfect plan. They will bury him under their driveway or something.

Love that Eddie Bauer Cubs hat Billy Corgan was wearing.

Kerry (dymaxia), Thursday, 16 October 2003 14:58 (twenty-two years ago)

What I want to know:

How is Darren Baker doing?

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 16 October 2003 15:36 (twenty-two years ago)

He was already quoted as saying "The Cubs will win next year." Had the Cubbies won last night, I'm sure we woulda heard how Darren predicted it. What a punk.

bnw (bnw), Thursday, 16 October 2003 15:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks for the condolences from Y3 and Diamond. I went to the game. That's right, a friend got me a ticket and I went.

There were a lot of good signs at the game (don't know if they showed the goat-related ones on TV) but the funniest thing we saw was afterwards leaving Wrigley Field a guy walking around with a hand-made sign that simply said "GOD HELP US."

Love the indie guilt Randall Simon "Reynolds" (see also "Greil" Marcus Giles, "Chuck" Eddy Guardado).

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 16 October 2003 17:45 (twenty-two years ago)

hmph. Leave me alone.

:)

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Thursday, 16 October 2003 17:56 (twenty-two years ago)

bnw, did you actually "make" that? I find it quite . . . touching. Especially the Kenny Lofton flower in the middle.

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 16 October 2003 18:58 (twenty-two years ago)

the card was admittedly touching, although i find it criminal that there's no bartman on that card.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 16 October 2003 19:01 (twenty-two years ago)

There is a Bartman flower all the way on the right. It's kind of wilty.

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 16 October 2003 19:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Is that me on the bottom there? That looks a hell of a lot like me. Weird. Who is that?

NA (Nick A.), Thursday, 16 October 2003 19:05 (twenty-two years ago)

haha, i am blind.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 16 October 2003 19:13 (twenty-two years ago)

How is Darren Baker doing?

Oh man, gygax is so OTM here. I mean, do we still "trusty" in "Dusty"? What is Darren Baker doing up there on that podium with Dusty? Shouldn't he have to answer some tough questions after some questionable decisions? Isn't he just using his cute son to paint himself as a more sympathetic figure?

Doesn't he need to asked why Matt Clement is sitting on the bench stroking his beard? McKeon had Redman out of there in a hearbeat. Does Dusty understand the urgency of the situation. Meanwhile, Kerry Wood is allowed to give up 7 earned? And why does Kerry Wood receive a standing ovation after giving up seven earned? I guarantee you that would never happen at Sox park. Guarantee it. I'm pretty sure I talked about his control on this or the other thread a couple nights ago. I give him a lot of credit for his post-game comments though. Anyway, that reception is why the Tribune company doesn't have to do jack to help this team win, and Cub fans will lie there and take it. For 95 years.

Anyway, wow felicity you went to the game! Man, I'm really sorry, I truly am. As I say, I actually coerced myself into rooting for the Cub last night, for the sake of the city and the people I know who hold them dear. I still can't get over what that Beckett kid did last night. Incredible. Has anybody ever given up only one run in 13 innings of work in a span of 4 DAYS?

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 16 October 2003 19:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Seriously, who is that, it's creeping me out.

NA (Nick A.), Thursday, 16 October 2003 19:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the fans recognized that Wood is a pretty great pitcher this year and he hit a mammoth fucking homerun to tie the game earlier!!!

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 16 October 2003 19:33 (twenty-two years ago)

It is you!

I saw like 5 seconds of the game last night. Nick said I needed to get used to paying attention to the Cubs. Some guy had to duck because the ball would've hit him in the head. Then they showed him ducking from like 7 different angles. It was funny.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 16 October 2003 19:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the fans recognized that Wood is a pretty great pitcher this year and he hit a mammoth fucking homerun to tie the game earlier!!!

Yeah, actually, I completely forgot about the game situation for a brief instant while we were applauding Wood.

AT WRIGLEY. KERRY WOOD EXITS.

Me: (clapping head off) KERRY! WE LOVE YOU!
Me: (to friend) Why is he hanging his head down like that?
Friend: I think he's upset about the 3 runs he just gave up.
Me: Oh.

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 16 October 2003 19:51 (twenty-two years ago)

did you cry, f? if so, did mark come out of the dugout to console you? i would've!!! shall we have raucous world series parteeeees?

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 16 October 2003 19:53 (twenty-two years ago)

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 16 October 2003 19:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Yanc3y, are you still drunk from last nite???

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 16 October 2003 19:58 (twenty-two years ago)

wtf? can a man not console a friend in a slightly condescending/totally creepy/but in reality very loving way?

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 16 October 2003 20:00 (twenty-two years ago)

There's no crying in baseball!

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 16 October 2003 20:06 (twenty-two years ago)

tell that to darren baker.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 16 October 2003 20:07 (twenty-two years ago)

It was funny, though. I was totally taken by surprise at the end of the game when the Marlins suddenly starting being happy and celebrating and piling on, because my brain had just nonsensically assumed that since we were at Wrigley Field the only two outcomes were 1. celebration or 2. non-celebration and that in the event of 2. everyone would be very sad and solemn and walk quietly off the field, including the Marlins.

It kind of cracked me up when I realized how deluded that was.

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 16 October 2003 20:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Yanc3y claimed all of us NYC Laydeez as his like a year ago, it's no longer creepy to us when he acts like this. It's like he's Charlie and we're the Angels. Don't worry. But there really is no crying in baseball. Unless Pedro Martinez body slams you to the ground, then you cry I think.

Ally-zay, Thursday, 16 October 2003 20:12 (twenty-two years ago)

mmhmm

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 16 October 2003 20:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Y, please carry on. "I'm lovin' it."

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 16 October 2003 20:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Yanc3y claimed all of us NYC Laydeez as his like a year ago

Ha ha, so true.

I myself have these weird Yanc3ylike feelings of possessiveness over a guy at my tennis club for no reason. The poor guy goes there with his girlfriend and I have these irrational angry feelings towards her, that she is not worthy of being his girlfriend (even though I don't know either of them at all), so seeing them together makes me livid with rage, even though I have no connection to them whatsoever.

x-post: Oh come on, Darren Baker is like 4 years old! It's cute when he cries. Like when the college basketball cheerleaders cry, I love that.

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 16 October 2003 20:22 (twenty-two years ago)

A Cubs fan gets some perspective:

http://espn.go.com/page2/s/shea/031016.html

"The Cubs are it for me. The other sports I love, but this would be the greatest. ... I don't need it anymore. I have a son; he's 1-year-old. That's my joy. I don't need the Cubs anymore. But, you know, life will go on and we'll get through this."

Does this mean he didn't pay attention to his child before the Cubs lost? Weel, shit... Go Marlins!

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 17 October 2003 05:37 (twenty-two years ago)

the kid's only one - what's to pay attention to?

cinniblount (James Blount), Friday, 17 October 2003 05:43 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah all they do at that age is cry (they're kinda like cubs and sox fans)

geeta (geeta), Friday, 17 October 2003 05:53 (twenty-two years ago)

ha! No shit, dude. Maybe it's my lack of perspective on history, but I'm gonna lose patience with this whinging real quick-like. And nobody better say "curse." That wuzn't no curse, boy, that was losing some key games right there.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 17 October 2003 05:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Bold statement.

oops (Oops), Friday, 17 October 2003 06:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Bold statement to say it wasn't a curse? Were you watching?

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 17 October 2003 06:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I meant that I was just so sure that a goat was the reason why they lost the series. It's the only explanation. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go trim my rabbits' feet and see if my mother's back is okay.

oops (Oops), Friday, 17 October 2003 06:30 (twenty-two years ago)

bold statement

cinniblount (James Blount), Friday, 17 October 2003 07:36 (twenty-two years ago)

seven years pass...

http://triblocal.com/downers-grove/2011/06/24/police-men-bound-for-cubs-game-accused-of-yelling-slurs-at-children/

this kind of squares w/ my opinion of suburban cubs fans. (speaking as someone who grew up around wrigley and had to put up with them.)
