Gangs of ILX: Introducing THE CLUSTER GANG

I've said I don't come to ILX to talk about ILX. Here's where I contradict myself proudly, boldly, without contradiction. Here's where I horrify a bunch of posters whose attitudes to life are similar to mine by hand picking them to be part of a new brand, a new band, a new gang which I am calling, for the purposes of marketing, THE CLUSTER GANG.

So stop forward Anthony, Suzy, Ed, Enrique, Tracer Hand, Ann Sterzinger, Nabisco... the gang starts with you. There are differences in accent, but I feel like we are A GANG. Did I miss anyone out? Who else feels they should be with us? Who knows for sure they're against us? Can we define what it is that unites us and will bind this unit through turbulent threads? Can we work out a system of relay or tag posting related to geography, so that when one poster tires there's always another in a different time zone ready to come in slugging for liberty, justice and THE CLUSTER GANG WAY?

Momus (Momus), Thursday, 16 October 2003 11:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Who's in your gang and what do you call yourselves?

Momus (Momus), Thursday, 16 October 2003 11:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Nick, are you just grandly and royally bored today?

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 16 October 2003 11:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Bend over for your CLUSTER GANG tattoo, Suzy!

I identified another gang: the SOUTHSIDE CALLBOX gang.

Matt Cibulla
Nate Patrin
Jody Beth Rosen
Michaelangelo Matos
Anthony Easton

Anthony, you traitor! WHICH GANG ARE YOU IN?

Momus (Momus), Thursday, 16 October 2003 11:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I wouldn't belong to any gang that would have me. Hyuck hyuck hyuck.

(Unless said gang was comprised entirely of dirty dronerock soundartists and dirty dronerock history programme presenters.)

kate (kate), Thursday, 16 October 2003 11:30 (twenty-two years ago)

But will they fight for you when you're in trouble Kate? Will they drone when you moan?

Momus (Momus), Thursday, 16 October 2003 11:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh fuck. I feel that Momus is about to write an indie-musical based on the gangs. You have the weakest gang ever, obviously.

jets, Thursday, 16 October 2003 11:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Tattoos are so dreadfully RE/SEARCH, Nick.

so as Jets, you are the pasty-ass white boy retard gang?

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 16 October 2003 11:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Also some of those people join me in the Minneapolis Tendency. City of (F)lakes, right?

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 16 October 2003 11:35 (twenty-two years ago)

SORREE!! You have the feyest gang, ever, than.

jets, Thursday, 16 October 2003 11:36 (twenty-two years ago)

ACTION AND JETS
Gee, Officer Krupke, we're very upset;
We never had the love that ev'ry child oughta get.
We ain't no delinquents,
We're misunderstood.
Deep down inside us there is good!

Gee, Officer Krupke,
We're down on our knees,
'Cause no one wants a fellow with a social disease.
Gee, Officer Krupke,
What are we to do?
Gee, Officer Krupke,
Krup you!

Momus (Momus), Thursday, 16 October 2003 11:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Momus: Why carry knives when we have our wits?
The Cluster Gang: (chanting in sing-song) He's right. He's right. He's right.

jets, Thursday, 16 October 2003 11:40 (twenty-two years ago)

You have the feyest gang, ever, than.

SING IF YOU'RE GLAD TO BE FEY!
SING IF YOU'RE HAPPY THIS WAY!

Momus (Momus), Thursday, 16 October 2003 11:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Make of our hands one hand!
Make of our hearts one heart!
Now it begins, now we start -
One hand!
One heart!

Even death won't stop us now!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 16 October 2003 11:41 (twenty-two years ago)

what the fuck is this, divide and rule or something?

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 16 October 2003 11:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Dammit, I was trying to post a picture of my moaning droaning art history professor, but Amazon is being a bloody bitch. I'll just have to link to him:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0520230221/ref=lib_rd_ss_TBCV/103-3399556-0887035?v=glance&s=books&vi=reader&img=11#reader-link

Can he be in my gang? Please?

kate (kate), Thursday, 16 October 2003 11:42 (twenty-two years ago)

You're either with us, or you're against us, Pashmina!

One hand! One heart! The LUSTRE OF CLUSTER!

Momus (Momus), Thursday, 16 October 2003 11:43 (twenty-two years ago)

The last person that thought me fey wound up on his ass in a Tube carriage after a strategic kick to the nuts. Fact.

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 16 October 2003 11:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Scene: Momus is stopped in the street. Someone has yelled out: 'Hey Momus, hey you fag ...'. The gang starts to dance out of alleyways and cornershops clicking their fingers. Momus turns around dramatically. He stops and stares at his verbal assailant. 'But I can SING' (in a low Leonard Cohen-like mumble). The assailant as played by Peter from Fame Academy retaliates by singing 'You and Me'. The verbal murmuring grows louder. The Cluster Gang begins chanting social action words to criticise the assailant.

jets, Thursday, 16 October 2003 11:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah, the hotness. CURSE YOU, AMAZON.

(Peter Fame Academy is not as hot as Nigel Spivey. FACT!!!)

kate (kate), Thursday, 16 October 2003 11:46 (twenty-two years ago)

well, fey is my name (actually it almost is my name)

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 16 October 2003 11:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Dave Q wonders out in the melee singing 'I'm so Pretty' whilst holding a gluebag to his face. He is accidently run-over by a passing bus. The Cluster Gang take off to fervently discuss life and death and the consequences of both. SCENE ENDS.

jets, Thursday, 16 October 2003 11:48 (twenty-two years ago)

*clink* *clink* *clink*

oh warriors come out and playay

*clink* *clink* *clink*

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 16 October 2003 11:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Kate, he looks like the bastard love child of Nick and Michael Portillo. and 'Nigel Spivey' sounds like a character in Parklife or a Robyn Hitchcock song.

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 16 October 2003 11:50 (twenty-two years ago)

That would be the clunking of the Cluster Gangs japanese fashion accessories, non?

jets, Thursday, 16 October 2003 11:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Who wants to join my rival gang, the Saucy Liberals?

NA (Nick A.), Thursday, 16 October 2003 11:50 (twenty-two years ago)

FEAR OUR STYLE! MOCK OUR CAFE LIFESTYLE WHILE SECRETLY WISHING YOU COULD SIP THE BRIMMING FROTH WITH US! LOOK IN THE MIRROR AND SHRIVEL IN THE KNOWLEDGE THAT YOU WILL NEVER BE ABLE TO OUTLUSTRE A CLUSTER!

CLUSTERS, MUSTER!

Momus (Momus), Thursday, 16 October 2003 11:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Gosh, he looks terrible in his official Cambridge faculty photo:

http://www.classics.cam.ac.uk/Faculty/photos/spivey.gif

He looks much better when he is wandering around underground bunkers talking about Nazis!

kate (kate), Thursday, 16 October 2003 11:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmm, Cluster Bomb anyone?

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 16 October 2003 11:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Kate, he looks like the bastard love child of Nick and Michael Portillo.

Are you *trying* to make me ill? I'm trying to have a sexual fantasy here, leave me alone!

Yes, his name is silly. It's part of the appeal. Like "Julian Casablancas" *isn't* a silly name?

kate (kate), Thursday, 16 October 2003 11:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm pleased to have been called out by name but it feels weird to imagine myself part of a FORMAL subgroup here or something.

I like the Island Manhattan! Smoke on your pipe and put that in!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 16 October 2003 11:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Pete, you are all bluster, we are THE CLUSTERS!

Momus (Momus), Thursday, 16 October 2003 11:54 (twenty-two years ago)

good news boppers, the big alert is back on. looks like there's more trash to take out. time to clean up the streets for real. can you dig it?

renegade soundbwoy (blueski), Thursday, 16 October 2003 11:55 (twenty-two years ago)

last one to Coney's a fey fuck

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 16 October 2003 11:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Kate, wtf?! I hope he looks better wandering around.

I'm with the Saucy Liberals 100%!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 16 October 2003 11:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Awesome. The Saucy Liberals challenge the Cluster Gang to a game of stickball...TO THE DEATH!

NA (Nick A.), Thursday, 16 October 2003 11:58 (twenty-two years ago)

We in the CLUSTERS listen to Cluster. What do you Saucy Liberals listen to?

Momus (Momus), Thursday, 16 October 2003 11:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Nick, off to Potsdam with you, I want The Schoß Sans Souci tagged as our territory.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 16 October 2003 11:59 (twenty-two years ago)

No one understands my forbidden lust! waaaaahhhhh!!!

(Perhaps they just make him up to make him look better on TV)

kate (kate), Thursday, 16 October 2003 12:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 16 October 2003 12:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Pay your dues to our views or we launch Sterzinger missiles at yous!

Momus (Momus), Thursday, 16 October 2003 12:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Anthony there is on the team. He'll take the bullet for me! Unless he's a double agent.

Momus (Momus), Thursday, 16 October 2003 12:03 (twenty-two years ago)

HEADLINE: MOMUS CAUGHT DEFACINIG CHICKLET BOOKS. TONY PARSON DEEMS MOMUS AND HIS GANG 'MAD'.

jets, Thursday, 16 October 2003 12:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the idea of an exclusive Drinking Club better. Gangs sound a bit too active.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 16 October 2003 12:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Kate, I was also trying to put you off your lunch ;-).

I can just imagine Ken Livingston saying his name in that Estuary drone:
Noyyyyy-jill Spoy-vee.

Do Sterzinger missiles come in packs of two, Nick?

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 16 October 2003 12:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I haven't checked yet.

Momus (Momus), Thursday, 16 October 2003 12:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the ACTUALITY of exclusive drinking clubs wot I don't mention by name on ILX because while not being elitist, I don't want Cabbage going to them ;-).

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 16 October 2003 12:08 (twenty-two years ago)

If the Cluster Gang wants to rumble with the Saucy Liberals, you can find us at our secret hideout (Starbucks) listening to new age world music and smoking clove cigarettes. You want a piece of this?

NA (Nick A.), Thursday, 16 October 2003 12:08 (twenty-two years ago)

If you hear the strains of the pipes of Zamfir, that means we're coming after you. Be afraid!

NA (Nick A.), Thursday, 16 October 2003 12:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Where is Pinkpanther? She lives in Cambridge, doesn't she? I will let her join my moaning droaning exclusive drinking gang if she will lie in wait and pull passing Horny Historians off their bicycles!

kate (kate), Thursday, 16 October 2003 12:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Cabbage I suspect is perfectly happy with London's several thousand public drinking clubs.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 16 October 2003 12:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Walking on Morecambe Bay at the right time of day, you could walk fully halfway out to Ireland without ever touching water.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 16 October 2003 12:12 (twenty-two years ago)

(Perhaps they just make him up to make him look better on TV)
Jesus God, let's hope so! (sorry!)

Yes I live in Cambridge, now what was it you wanted me to do again?

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 16 October 2003 12:13 (twenty-two years ago)

NA, you can't smoke in Starbucks (the real reason it ain't exactly taking off in France or Italy).

We have better weed, too.

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 16 October 2003 12:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmm, I beg to differ!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 16 October 2003 12:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Rocknroll is our epiphany/culture alienation [pron. aleyanadion] boredom and despair/ooh-oo-ooh/ala-lalallalala

Joke - honest.

Oxford-based Enrique (Enrique), Thursday, 16 October 2003 12:14 (twenty-two years ago)

(We smoke in the alley out back behind the Starbucks)

It looks like the only other member of the Saucy Liberals is defecting. Oh well, it will be a gang of one.

NA (Nick A.), Thursday, 16 October 2003 12:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Pink, find said Horny Historian (who is a Cambridge prof when he's not presenting Channel 5 documentaries) and pull him off his bicycle, then stuff him in an envelope and mail him to me.

Oh god, where is the Crush Of Shame thread when I need it?

kate (kate), Thursday, 16 October 2003 12:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Peering askance at the miniscule opening of New King's Road as it turns off from Fulham High Street, the World's End Estate towers hover at an angle whose ominosity is comparable to that of the painted red boat threatening to devour Tippi Hedren throughout Hitchcock's Marnie.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 16 October 2003 12:17 (twenty-two years ago)

make that two. but I want a cool nickname. T-Bone.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 16 October 2003 12:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Marcello: I reckon you're right. When we went to the Isle of Man last New Year, and I could not figure for the life of me why it took so fucking long to go 25 miles over sea.

Peering askance at said miniscule opening I can't see anything except for women who still wear Alice bands.

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 16 October 2003 12:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Ye Gods, both of you there? My cover's almost blown...

Suzy - tell me about it. It's what? 4 knots? Many a time...

Former resident of Cambridge Enrique (Enrique), Thursday, 16 October 2003 12:21 (twenty-two years ago)

How long would the Cluster Gang last in OZ is the real question.

*cue OZ theme* *cue Momus and the Cluster Gang walking into the recreation area*

jets, Thursday, 16 October 2003 12:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Peering askance at the miniscule opening of New King's Road as it turns off from Fulham High Street, the World's End Estate towers hover at an angle whose ominosity is comparable to that of the painted red boat threatening to devour Tippi Hedren throughout Hitchcock's Marnie.

That's it, Marcello's in.

Momus (Momus), Thursday, 16 October 2003 12:22 (twenty-two years ago)

And is Harrogate really, as I strongly suspect, a brick-by-brick clone of Aberdeen?

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 16 October 2003 12:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm in the ISFJ gang -- it's a Myers-Briggs thing -- and there are only two people in it, myself and Julia. Honorary membership goes to Luna, because she's a fellow SFJ, though she's got that pesky E thing at the beginning. ;)

I suppose I could also be considered part of the "I'm Unimportant And Talk About Unimportant Things" gang, too. You know us -- we're the ones who check out the "This is the thread where I say" threads first. We revel in our "mundane" existences!

Oh yeah, and I'm the only person in the "I'm A Reactionary" gang. Aw.

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Thursday, 16 October 2003 12:22 (twenty-two years ago)

*cue blood bath* *cue woman screaming 'THE HORROR THE HORROR' *cue end of The Cluster Gang* *cue end cards which state: GANGS ARE FOR FOOLS!*

jets, Thursday, 16 October 2003 12:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh duh -- forgot to add this:

*"cliques" on the Submit button*

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Thursday, 16 October 2003 12:24 (twenty-two years ago)

GANGS ARE FOR FOOLS

Hey, jet!
Don't say that
When we get
You surrounded
In our ally, cat.

Momus (Momus), Thursday, 16 October 2003 12:27 (twenty-two years ago)

(Clicks fingers menacingly)

Momus (Momus), Thursday, 16 October 2003 12:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I love the fact that the VERY FIRST SONG quoted on this thread was my big number. (Yes, I was Action in high school.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 16 October 2003 12:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, I am obv in the Gang Of Four.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 16 October 2003 12:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I have never been part of any gang, I don't see that changing now.

Nicolars (Nicole), Thursday, 16 October 2003 12:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm like the advanced-level teacher that desperately tries to talk the wayward middle-class intellectual students from joining a gang.

I would break out in song 'Don't Cry for Me Noam Chomsky' when I am viciously and accidently stabbed by one of the Cluster Gang's japanese accessories.

jets, Thursday, 16 October 2003 12:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll see what I can do Kate, although I cannot promise I'll get the correct prof first time round!

x-post
Maybe I need to join Dee's gang?

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 16 October 2003 12:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Nicolars, join me in the "I'm Unimportant And Talk About Unimportant Things" gang! We'll have loads of fun being everyday people, Middle Americans, average, everyday citizens, and cheering on the members of the gang with promising musical futures. It'll be a grand time!

Pinkpanther: Which one, hon?

*cliques on Submit once more*

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Thursday, 16 October 2003 12:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I normally practice solitary vigilanteism is a hobby, and as a handy way of keeping fit, so I fear I don't fit in with a gang ethos at all. My presence would disrupt the group dynamic, and I look awful in sequins.

Matt (Matt), Thursday, 16 October 2003 12:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Quite frankly I wouldn't be in a gang with ANY OF YOU because I don't trust the lot of you. You'd all be fucking singing and dancing while someone from the other gang was stabbing me in the face, this is not how the world works, you know.

Ally-zay, Thursday, 16 October 2003 12:39 (twenty-two years ago)

SUBMIT to the CLUSTERS, you self-proclaimed UNIMPORTANTS! Or we ignore you.

Momus (Momus), Thursday, 16 October 2003 12:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll see what I can do Kate, although I cannot promise I'll get the correct prof first time round!

Having seen all the other History Prof's on the page where I got that photo, this could be a very very scary proposition, indeed!

kate (kate), Thursday, 16 October 2003 12:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Clusters sounds like a really awful STD, not like herpes, which at least sounds like something cartoon squirrels might have.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 16 October 2003 12:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Of course I'm certainly not starting the Herpes Gang.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 16 October 2003 12:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Clarence's Tower in York. Two years ago I wanted to jump off it. Now I want to jump on top of it.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 16 October 2003 12:42 (twenty-two years ago)

You'd all be fucking singing and dancing while someone from the other gang was stabbing me in the face, this is not how the world works, you know

hahahaa ... AIIEEE! NO. NO. (in the background the Clusters are singing 'I want to live in East London' (set to the tune of WSS 'America') whilst Ally was being butchered.

jets, Thursday, 16 October 2003 12:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I was gonna say this one
the "I'm Unimportant And Talk About Unimportant Things" gang
But if you're gonna be all elitest & American about it....*grumbles*
Nick, I'm back with the libs!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 16 October 2003 12:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Nickalicious, join T.H.R.U.S.H. I hear they're always looking for new pussies.

Momus (Momus), Thursday, 16 October 2003 12:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Is that a throw-down, Momus? FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT!

jets, Thursday, 16 October 2003 12:47 (twenty-two years ago)

What, Pink, did Nigey Spivey scare you off the Moaning Droning Gang? ::sniff:: He does that.

kate (kate), Thursday, 16 October 2003 12:48 (twenty-two years ago)

If you was for real Momus you wouldn't require prompting to change your log in name to General Cluster.

Alex K (Alex K), Thursday, 16 October 2003 12:49 (twenty-two years ago)

*the ominous sound of clicking fingers is heard in the background*

jets, Thursday, 16 October 2003 12:49 (twenty-two years ago)

ha ha, I thought it was great!

Anyway, I can join no gang. Since the demise of my master ****** ******* I am sworn to roam the lands unencumbered of earthly ties, for I must serve his spirit with every last drop of my blood. Plus, I'd lose all my health care benefits.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 16 October 2003 12:49 (twenty-two years ago)

If you try to walk downhill from Lincoln Cathedral in the dead of winter without wearing appropriate boots, you may find yourself doing an excellent, if impromptu, impersonation of George Chakiris, waving of big meaty hands included.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 16 October 2003 12:50 (twenty-two years ago)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 16 October 2003 12:55 (twenty-two years ago)

This board has hit rock bottom.

and yes, I'm more than happy with the thousands of public drinking hostelries in London.

chris (chris), Thursday, 16 October 2003 12:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I see gangs as a kind of cheese sandwich.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 16 October 2003 12:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Can we drink frappucinos Kate, cos if we can, I'm back in!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 16 October 2003 12:57 (twenty-two years ago)

And plenty of alcohol aswell, but that goes without saying!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 16 October 2003 12:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Marcello's posts are makin me feel k-dumb (and that's a good thing)

Enrique (Enrique), Thursday, 16 October 2003 13:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow, that's mean.

Is that your ass or your momma have reindeer?

Momus (Momus), Thursday, 16 October 2003 13:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Double-shot frappucinos, Pink! Every day! With shots of Frangelico (or any other liqueur you may prefer.)

Moaning and Droning and Caffeination is where it's at!

kate (kate), Thursday, 16 October 2003 13:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Why put out a 4-CD Tom Jones box set when the need for a Gilbert O'Sullivan box set is clearly so much greater?

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 16 October 2003 13:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Marcello is the 'rainman' of the Cluster Gang!!

jets, Thursday, 16 October 2003 13:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, I forgot Mike Hanle y! He's in. You guys can have Mike Hanley, though.

Momus (Momus), Thursday, 16 October 2003 13:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Which puts in me in mind of: why do I not unsubscribe from sub-Never Mind the Buzzcocks Q reader's Popbitch email thingy, wherein ex-IPC staff discuss Gilbert O'Sullivan, who I've never heard of in any other context?

Or the guy with the crazy sounds from Police Academy.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 16 October 2003 14:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, I forgot Mike Hanle y! He's in. You guys can have Mike Hanley, though.

Ha ha! I like the polite tones that this was pitched in.

Yo Tracer, I know you living in London but you can still be part of the Pizza Christ posse if you want. We have bigger knives + free dental.

West Coast Rap All-Stars, "We're All in the Same Gang"

{*gun is cocked and fired*}

(I'm King News and I come to you with the truth
The mean streets took six more lives overnight
all the result of gang-bang stupidity
By the way, you gangsters should know
one of your victims was a three year old girl
Well, you gang members, you still don't get it, do ya?)

(With your badself)

[King Tee]
It's straight up madness everywhere I look
Used to be a straight a student, now he's a crook
Robbin people just to smoke or shoot up
Used to have a crew cut, now he's a pooh-put
Dropped out of school and he joins the neighborhood gang
Hangin on the streets sellin caine
To his own people
Now when I say people I mean color
You a stupid muthaf...
I'm tryin to stress the fact that you're dumb
Get yourself presentable, son, and just come
Together, you better, cause pretty soon it's gonna be too late
A message from King Tee The Great

[Body & Soul]
Sisters, since we are the mothers of this earth
It's time we start being good mothers from the birth
Of our children, no time for sleepin
Teach em to fight and win for the right reason
It's your time, it's your life, live it
Proud to be black, young and gifted
Lifted by the knowledge and takin the right route
Gang violence needs to be wiped out
A-l-m-i-g-h-ty C and E-z-i-r-e
We see the f-u-t-u-r-e
Should be a positive thang
Body & Soul and you, we're in the same gang

[Def Jef]
One and the same
Everyone came in the same chains
Caught with the same aim
Brain games and names changed
To protect the innocent by-stander
Lies, slander and the master-planner
Destroy the black male
Crack jail and semi-automatic
For static if the crack fails
So since we all talk the same slang
Stop killin, my brother, cause we're all from the same gang

[Michel'le]
Don't you know we've got to put our heads together?
Make the change cause we're all in the same gang

[Tone-Loc]
Now as a youth I used to get my bang on
And on the ave get my part-time slang on
Upon a time for me was no joke though
They knew I was crazy, so they labelled me Loco
Khakis creased, golf hat, feelin sporty
Low ridin and tossin up a forty
Thinkin in my mind that no one could handle us
The downest brothers ever touched Los Angeles
I found life was much more suitable
Cause I'm the brother that makes black so beautiful
I ain't slippin or down with a head trip
I'm talkin to all the Bloods and all the Crips
Throw down your rag and get on the right track, man
It's time to fight, unite and be a black man
Tone-Loc is on a positive change
Cause remember, we're all in the same gang

[Above The Law]
Bein the pimps that we are
We're here to speak on a situation that has gone too far
Here at home in the ghettos of LA
Where a young black brother's not promised to see the next day
Cause we used to clock on the streets before we made beats
But fools just lay and prey on the weak
It don't depend on the color of a rag
Cause if you got what they want you know they gonna take what you have
Cause violence don't only revolve from drugs and thugs
And gangs that bang
Most times it's a political thang
Yeah, a couple of spots'll get popped
And if the government wanted to freeze it it could all get stopped
But they don't because they want it like that
Because the system been set up to hold us back
Yeah, Above The Law means that we can do whatever
So why don't we stick together?
(You got it)

[Ice-T]
Ice-T rippin the microphone the way I do
Listen close, my brothers, cause I'm talkin to you
The problem is we got a suicidal lifestyle
Cause 90 percent of us are livin foul and wild
I say job, you say ([Hen-G:] bad joke
I rather jack another brother, watch the gun smoke)
Livin in the fast lane flippin like you're insane
You won't stop until your blood runs down the street drain
I got an idea, give me a minute
And if it makes sense, then get with it
What if we could take our enemies, feed em poison
Undereducate their girls and boys and
Split em up, make em fight one another
Better yet, make em kill for a color
All my brothers need to know one thing
No matter what you think, we're all in the same gang

[Michel'le]
Don't you know we've got to put our heads together?
Stop the fighting
(Make the change)
Because we're all in the same gang

[Dr. Dre & MC Ren]
Yo, we're not here to preach because we're not ministers
We're tellin like it is cause Ren and Dre is like sinister
Reality speaks for itself when it's spoken
A basehead cluck can't blame nobody for smokin
Yo, bullets flyin, mothers cryin, brothers dyin
Lyin in the streets, that's why we're tryin
To stop it from fallin apart and goin to waste
And keepin a smile off a white face
N.W.A never preachin, just teachin
The knowledge of the streets to each and
All that don't understand, that's why we came
To let you know that we're all in the same gang

[JJ Fad]
The J double, F, the a, the d, that is
And if you want the solution to the quiz
What's black in black, yo, and kills another?
An ignorant sucker that isn't labelled as a brother
But another
So now it's time we evolve
And get together and solve it
Cause the world is revolvin
Around a terrible situation
One will kill another for a reputation
So it's time we stop and realize that we're all the same
Yo Dre, tell em (We're all in the same gang)

[Young MC]
Brothers killin other brothers
I thought the idea was to love one another?
Open up the paper to one more death
If y'all keep this up then there'll be no one left
I try my best to set an example
Sayin hype lyrics over hip-hop samples
Not just a bragger to boast but to inform
Cause we're livin in the calm before the storm
You see, I believe that the children are the future
But what's it all about if in the future they shoot ya?
We're all human beings, if we're cut we'll bleed
And I want to see all young people succeed
Do 9 to 5, not 5 to 10
Just go to work and not the state pen
Cause you live better when you're out there free
And that's comin straight to ya from the Young MC

[Digital Underground]
I'm in a rage
Oh yeah? Yo, why is that g?
Other races, they say we act like rats in a cage
I tried to argue, but check it, every night in the news
We prove them suckers right and I got the blues
America...
Get busy, Humpy
The red, the white, the blue and
The blue and the red
For Clips and Bloods
The white for who's got you doin
Time bustin caps on one another
The Underground's down for peace among brothers
Kill a black man?
What?
Yo, what are you retarded?
Tell em, Hump
Yo, do you work for the Klan?
Do what you like
Unless you like gangbangin
Let's see how many brothers leave us hangin

[Oaktown's 3.4.7.]
The gang that should hang is the one that contains
The sisters and the brothers who are all in the same frame of mind
Now listen, get loose, it's unity time
Yeah, yeah
Peace is a presence that we all need
The future's in our hands, in word and deed
I'm Terrible T and I'm Sweet LD
We're 3.5.7. totally

[MC Hammer]
Kickin on the ave 'bout a quarter to 9
All the homies gettin blind in an eight ball line
Now on this tip they started runnin at the lip
Jumped in their deuce and took a little trip
Hit the block about 12 on the tick
The windows went down and the nines went click
People started yellin, bodies started bailin
Bullets cold flyin sendin some to hell and
It's gotta stop, we don't need all the violence
Peace in the hood and a moment of silence
We got together not for ego or fame
We got involved cause we're all in the same gang

[Eazy-E]
Last but not least, yo, Eazy's no sell-out
And if you can't hang in the streets, then get the hell out
I'm not tryin to tell ya what to do
You have your own freedom of choice who to listen to
You knew good from bad, fair from foul, right from wrong
Now your mother's singing that sad song
(My baby ain't never hurt nobody!)
But he still got smoked at Bébé's party
But you're not the first or the last
You're nothin but a short story from the past
You're dead now, not number one but a zero
Take notes from Eazy-E, the violent hero

[Michel'le]
Don't you know we've got to put our heads together?
Don't you know we've got to put our heads together?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 16 October 2003 16:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Totally, our gang will be like a combo of the orphans from Oliver, the orphans from Annie, and the Bloods.

NA (Nick A.), Thursday, 16 October 2003 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

dude, i think ILX should be a one gigantic, show-stopping musical for a day.

we'd all get parts, even us preverted spear-carrying image-posting types.

i can do a mean baritone, too.

Kingfish (Kingfish), Thursday, 16 October 2003 16:41 (twenty-two years ago)

The coastaltown solitary vigilante committee would like to take this opportunity to state it's endorsement of Global knives.

I identified another gang: the SOUTHSIDE CALLBOX gang.

Matt Cibulla
Nate Patrin
Jody Beth Rosen
Michaelangelo Matos
Anthony Easton

Nah, that's so last year. Not that I wouldn't fight for those guys' honor, but these days my ultra-elite crime syndicate includes me, Elvis Telecom, and a getaway car with a trunkful of freshly laundered $100 bills.

*j.lu, resentful that no one tried to claim her for their gang, tiptoes up to a wall freshly painted white. she looks about for policemen or anyone else who might object. deciding the coast is clear she whips out a can of spray paint from beneath her coat and writes "MOMUS IS AN ASSHAT. THE CLUSTER GANG IS A BUNCH OF CORNY INDIE FUKKS." but she is too chicken to sign her work here, and slinks away into the nearest subway entrance.*

j.lu (j.lu), Thursday, 16 October 2003 17:48 (twenty-two years ago)

If only I could find pix of the Bloodhound Gang from 3-2-1 Contact. Now THAT was a gang!

I don't know why people are talking about the Plank Gang. There is no Plank Gang. And I'm certainly not in it. Neither are the most powerful people on ILX. Nothing of the kind. So stop talking about it.

Douglas (Douglas), Thursday, 16 October 2003 22:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned at Martin's place (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 16 October 2003 23:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I've just communicated with Ms. Sterzinger, and she says her dead grandpa--an air force man--is overcome with pride to see his progeny at long last lend the family name to a WMD. I still like the idea of the Sterzinger as some kind of Wehrmacht Tommy-gun analogue, as does Ann, but only an idiot would refuse the ballistic honorific.

Oh, and General Cluster, sir: Ann also begs I remind you, the Sterzingers are historically a mercenary clan ...

jackson anderville, Thursday, 16 October 2003 23:56 (twenty-two years ago)

The cachet of mysterious loner is over? I weep. But forced to choose, dynamic duos are preferable to gangs.

death disco doom-e, Friday, 17 October 2003 08:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah, so that's why yer on ILX so much recently... yer bitter cause you never crossed over into relevancy with yer "DJ-ing". ::shrugs and mouths the words "hello pot, my name is kettle, yer looking dark today!"::

death disco doom-e, Friday, 17 October 2003 08:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Leader? What leader. Tell him yerself you namedropping freak.

Why are you always so fucking rude to people in bands unless they're "famous"? Did it ever occur to you that some people are not in bands because they want to "make it" but because they actually genuinely enjoy making music? Something that, despite how much you pretend to DJ, you will never be able to do?

OK, I'm going to stop this tack now because I'm getting off playing poking and getting onto genuinely annoyed.

kate (kate), Friday, 17 October 2003 08:19 (twenty-two years ago)

**He's just upset because he never crossed over into relevancy with his 'band'. *shrugs shoulders* *silently mouths the word 'bitter'* **

None of my bands have ever done anything because they've all been crap. At least I'm not deluded about that.

**but i was well into my psych northern soul set by then**

I bet you were.

Tell us another story about Alan McGee, Doomie. We haven't heard one for five fucking minutes.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Friday, 17 October 2003 08:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Why is doomie mouthing the word bitter when everything else about him screams it to the rooftops?

Momus, you wanker (Mark C), Friday, 17 October 2003 10:06 (twenty-two years ago)

hahahahaha ...

nah i'm no bitter ...

i wish i was though. then i would have something to believe in. instead i wake up feeling so fucking empty inside every morning - no god, no television, no girls aloud, no big brother ... to be bitter i think you have had to believe in something and failed. i've never believed in anything. i have an automaton passion about everything.

doom-e, Friday, 17 October 2003 10:12 (twenty-two years ago)

None of y'all twee motherfuckers can stand up to the SEATTLE WEEKLY 187 CLICK and our nunchaku stylings. If you hear Kish Kash being blasted from a boombox in the distance, you have two blocks to run like hell.

kate (kate), Friday, 17 October 2003 10:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Whenever Ph4y posts as "Pashmina" I always have the urge to sing along to the tune of "Chihuahua"! Doo doo dooo doo - pashmina! Doo doo doo doo dooo - pashmina!

This may or may not have nothing to do with a Public Drinking Club Occasion.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 17 October 2003 10:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 17 October 2003 10:27 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm not *even* going to say which FAMOUS hollywood star conversed with me, one night, for a long time about scientology... i want to be a scientologist now because it's so glamorous.

Yo, don't hate

Enrique (Enrique), Friday, 17 October 2003 11:05 (twenty-two years ago)

AHEM: Commandantess Sterzinger finally reports to duty, Fuhrer. She has two things to say:

1. As my sexy male alter ego has gently reminded you, commandant, the Sterzingers are of the mercenary caste and have the family crest to prove it, so -- rival gangs must tithe to Momus so funds may be channeled to my coffers. Sinon, I shall have to go Saruman on everyone's keister and the White Han Dorks will NOT be a pretty sight: I'll make them dress like Harrison Ford and talk like Elmo.

2. Sterzinger missile leveled at retard, in defense of my honored clanlord (visual: my bowing dead veteran grandfather): I'm not goddamn searching for the thread you posted it on, but SOMEBODY here said something about liking Momus's music till he read his posts on ILX and decided the musician himself was an asshole. OK, buddy: YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO BE A CRITIC. OF ANYTHING. EVER. GIVE ME ALL YOUR FREELANCE JOBS, ESPECIALLY THE WELL-PAID ONES. Do you think Momus would spend enough time with you, ever, to annoy you enough to equal the pleasure you're denying yourself by not listening to his lovely work? Denying yourself harmless joy will only make you a more unbearable ass. Personally, I don't know what I would do if George Bush put me in a jail cell with Momus -- when I got out, I would probably either assassinate Bush II or start voting republican -- merely as a thank-you to his highness, you understand. Either way, I'd still enjoy the albums. I'm one of those critics who reads the book before I write the review.

Oh yeah, one more thing: the motherless Irish goddess Kera has some surprises in store for all of yiz. And she is beautiful like a glass of cream would be if I weren't allergic to cream.

Ann Sterzinger (Ann Sterzinger), Sunday, 19 October 2003 03:57 (twenty-two years ago)

This thread needs to be STOPPED.

adaml (adaml), Sunday, 19 October 2003 04:00 (twenty-two years ago)

That "retard" is Anthony Easton. He's respected around here. He earned it. What've you done?

nate detritus (natedetritus), Sunday, 19 October 2003 04:04 (twenty-two years ago)

adam OTM

oops (Oops), Sunday, 19 October 2003 04:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Also:

I'm one of those critics who reads the book before I write the review.

Momus ain't!

nate detritus (natedetritus), Sunday, 19 October 2003 04:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, wait, yeah, stop this thread. I hear that stupid comin', it's comin' 'round the bend.

nate detritus (natedetritus), Sunday, 19 October 2003 04:21 (twenty-two years ago)

You rang?

rob geary (rgeary), Sunday, 19 October 2003 04:32 (twenty-two years ago)

What's Ant East respected for? I certainly don't respect him as a critic on the basis of that comment -- it's completely irresponsible. If he changed his mind, I'd respect him. AND he would have a lot more fun in life and probably be a better writer. Tough love, baby. If he can change MY mind I'd love the feeling -- I love learning new shit. But my experience tells me I'm right. For example: I work where Neal Pollack used to work. I asked "should I read his book?" and people said "he's an asshole!" And I grumbled: "I didn't ask whether he'd be fun to have on the bowling team, I asked whether reading his book is worth my time." And guess what? I read it, I laughed my head off; I wrote him up for the Reader and then I met him, and much to my lack of surprise he wasn't an asshole at all. I found him absolutely charming. Had a great time on top of a great read; if I let "asshole" dissuade me I'd never learn anything. The only way to get to heaven is to be willing to let assholes call you an asshole.

Ann Sterzinger (Ann Sterzinger), Sunday, 19 October 2003 05:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Still though, Ann, said Ann, impersonating her alter ego: assholism is by and large irrelevant to something's worth, but probably colors the picture much of the time. Mark E. Smith is an asshole. A glorious asshole. And it's def. integral to the whole glorious package.

And sometimes, you must admit, one's reaction to the specific assholism is so visceral it really does trump any and everything else. Resisting is probably the good fight, but ...

jackson anderville (Ann Sterzinger), Sunday, 19 October 2003 05:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Whoops, silly unfamiliar computer. Three things:

1. Clusterfuck is one of my pet expressions.

2. Momus doesn't read before he reviews? Well, I believe a good slap to the face works with certain idiots, which might very well horrify him. And I flatly refuse to account for any incidental inconsistencies in my contrarian patron's shtick, as A. I couldn't sit through a damn Tarantino movie if you gave me free health insurance and my own human-size Habitrail, and B. There's more than one way to speak for devils. In MY gang we don't need to agree about everything.

3. Let me prove I can be fair: anybody have a gig the week of the 31st in Chicago? I'm subbing for the datebook girl at the Reader (little blurbs at the end of the calendar). You need more of a story than "my band has a gig," and whether I think you're a dink or not your project has to be interesting. I need at least one interesting event to blurb per day. Free publicity! Be interesting. Caveat: my choices are highly subject to editorial censure. Argh, the hired pen has half-tied hands.

Ann Sterzinger (Ann Sterzinger), Sunday, 19 October 2003 05:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Suddenly the "apex of interweb mentalism" which I thought occured on Friday seems like a mere foothold...

Sarah (starry), Sunday, 19 October 2003 11:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I like how Nate Detritus, to prove that 'Momus doesn't read before he reviews', links to a thread called 'Come anticipate...'. How many times do I have to point out that I was completely on-topic and within the original remit of that thread in anticipating a horrific film with horror and making the decision not to see this film? Or has Quentin the Hun taken over the world and made attendance at his blood-lettings compulsory?

I like also that this same Nate Detritus has, somewhat detrimentally to his argument, refused to follow a link to Vice magazine on that same thread because it might interfere with his own 'anticipation' of Vice's immorality!

May I add that Ann's line 'Sinon, I shall have to go Saruman on everyone's keister and the White Han Dorks will NOT be a pretty sight' is as lovely as Ezra Pound or Mike Hanle y. The chorus, immediately following it, that 'this thread needs to be STOPPED' simply proves that some will always hate talent.

Momus (Momus), Sunday, 19 October 2003 14:28 (twenty-two years ago)

(a) I refused to read the link from Vice because it proved nothing integral to my argument re: the imbecility of criticizing things one hasn't seen (and maybe you couldn't tell from the "I hate this generation" thread, but I have read Vice) and also was apparently about the benefits of getting jism on one's face, something I wasn't especially in the mood to read about at that particular time. I know I dislike Gavin McInnes from the things he's done as a figure in public media, not just his ridiculous interviews. You've read... a script. For a film that was often changed post-script via improvisation. Have you seen any Tarantino films? Any "violent" films, for that matter?

(b) I anticipate your next album to be an unfounded attack on me and everything I enjoy (including Tarantino films, sports cars, loud angry garage rock). Sure, it could be about a happy society of anthropomorphic moles and their complex irrigation systems and their fascination with Pachinko, but I know there's going to be a nauseating sexual-deviant undertone filled with incest and pedophilia and trademark infringement.

nate detritus (natedetritus), Sunday, 19 October 2003 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I refused to read the link from Vice because it proved nothing integral to my argument re: the imbecility of criticizing things one hasn't seen

I know that looks like I'm blatantly contradicting myself, and I can see Momus fingering himself in anticipation of his "I am the reincarnation of Oscar Wilde fo sho" bon mot comeback of death, but really, the exchange went something like this:

Me: "You're saying that a film involving phony violence via brightly-colored fake blood is worse than a film that involves real actual semen being shot from several real actual penises into the face of a real actual woman who's being really actually called "slut" and "whore" on the box?"

Him: "Oh come on it's not all bad, here's an article from Vice that says it isn't!"

nate detritus (natedetritus), Sunday, 19 October 2003 14:53 (twenty-two years ago)

(here)

nate detritus (natedetritus), Sunday, 19 October 2003 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Nate, Nate, Nate, wait, wait, wait, this hinges on the word 'anticipate'!

Momus (Momus), Sunday, 19 October 2003 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

So you... anticipated Quentin Tarantino to eventually be a conservative?

And way to rip off the Damned there. Now do "Anti-Pope"!

nate detritus (natedetritus), Sunday, 19 October 2003 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Momus, you keep clinging to that literalist excuse of "But the thread title is 'anticipate' ... I was anticipating!" Obviously, before the film opened, that's exactly what the thread was for, but once people went to see the film, the thread sensibly turned into a discussion of its content. (I know that another thread was then created strictly for people who'd seen the film, but that one didn't quite take off, because guess what, the original thread had more momentum and was more interesting.) I see nothing wrong with the thread shifting focus like this, especially when it's done collectively -- at that point, you just have to roll with it.

Furthermore, you weren't even anticipating the film!!! (anticipate= to look forward to, especially with pleasure) You'd read a script off the Internet some time ago and developed all your own intractable conclusions already. In what way were your comments at all similar to the anticipatory comments that started the thread?

jaymc (jaymc), Sunday, 19 October 2003 15:12 (twenty-two years ago)

And if all you were doing was anticipating, how could you then argue with people about substantive elements of the film?

jaymc (jaymc), Sunday, 19 October 2003 15:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Merriam-Webster defines 'anticipate':

1: to give advance thought, discussion, or treatment to
2 : to meet (an obligation) before a due date
3 : to foresee and deal with in advance : FORESTALL
4 : to use or expend in advance of actual possession
5 : to act before (another) often so as to check or counter
6 : to look forward to as certain : EXPECT

Momus (Momus), Sunday, 19 October 2003 15:18 (twenty-two years ago)

'Come FORESTALL 'Kill Bill' with me'!

Momus (Momus), Sunday, 19 October 2003 15:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I anticipate your next album to be an unfounded attack on me and everything I enjoy (including Tarantino films, sports cars, loud angry garage rock). Sure, it could be about a happy society of anthropomorphic moles and their complex irrigation systems and their fascination with Pachinko, but I know there's going to be a nauseating sexual-deviant undertone filled with incest and pedophilia and trademark infringement.

You're half right, since my next album is a very beautiful folk record which sounds like a UNESCO field recording of a Gaelic-speaking tribe which has miraculously escaped the culture of 'Taratino films, sports cars, loud angry garage rock'. There is absolutely no 'sexual-deviant undertone', but if you want to anticipate that, well, it's a free country.

Momus (Momus), Sunday, 19 October 2003 15:44 (twenty-two years ago)

momus to be honest i think you would hate Kill Bill (and fair enough!) but spinning grand theories about cultural collapse and the 'tendencies' of a genre and a filmmaker you're not even remotely familiar with - condemning fans of both along the way - is an incredibly silly way to buttress that suspicion.

this 'gangs' business is sad and lame

jones (actual), Sunday, 19 October 2003 15:50 (twenty-two years ago)

The chorus, immediately following it, that 'this thread needs to be STOPPED' simply proves that some will always hate talent.

Momus, that comment wasn't in reaction to Anne's post, I don't have any problem with Anne whatsoever- I was just thinking out loud, and I was thinking that this whole thread is rather silly. How you can see what follows as a "chorus" (how deliciously melodramatic) and a wholesale indictment of "talent" is beyond me.

Oh dear, now I feel all riled up. Is this why people like to argue with you so much? Is it okay if I just...don't bother?

I thought Adam's anguished plea to stop the thread was more of a reaction to Anthony being called a retard, rather than an attack on talent.

However if talent means unwarranted attacks on a guy, and a decent one at that, who hasn't even contributed here then I'll stick to being a dumb fuck in my gang of one.

taking sides: relating to music purely on its own terms vs relating to music through a filter of personal experience

i understood anthonys comment to be the latter, commenting contextually.

i do not know whether any form of personal relationship makes music better/worse, but i also do not know how it is possible to ignore such a thing and treat the music as though it were in a vaccuum (even if you should want to). i think maybe that context and life alter our opinions on things, and give us different views on things, for better or worse. was not anthony exploring this with his comment, that something external had an effect on his relationship with music.

i think i have missed what is bad about this, although it is possible that i have misunderstood. apologies to all concerned if this is the case

Re: who done said Momus post makes him hate Momus toon?:

"I think it was a lesson in good journalism. You know, paraphrasing someone without citing the source.
-- bnw (rilke...), October 19th, 2003."

Hm. What about "I'm not goddamn searching for the thread you posted it on, but SOMEBODY here said something about liking Momus's music till he..." sounded like it was trying to emulate journalism to you? I spend 80 hours a week friggin' fact-searching; I'm not going to waste my free time rereading 8,000 "The very mention of M---- makes my dick turn black, shrivel up, grow a mouth, and start screaming in pain!" posts just so I can put an individual NAME INDIVIDUAL NAMES on a human weakness. Inside everyone there lurks an evil little beestie who wants everyone else's art to tank. And it's so much easier to let that little beastie off the leash if you can convince yourself that the artist you're talking about doesn't deserve an audience cuz he a joik. If you can't keep that creature in check, then you shouldn't look for work as a critic. And if you want to blame somebody for pinning "retard" to Easton, if the badge was indeed mispinned then -- though me, I'd apologize to Easton anyway 'cos I'd feel bad -- blame:

"That "retard" is Anthony Easton. He's respected around here. He earned it. What've you done?
-- nate detritus (n***p*****550...), October 19th, 2003."\

... who WAS claiming to know where exactly the post in question came from. If he was wrong, I'm so sorry I believed him and will try to avoid repeating the error.

Ann Sterzinger (Ann Sterzinger), Monday, 20 October 2003 00:08 (twenty-one years ago)

nate detritus (natedetritus), Monday, 20 October 2003 00:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Really? I'm actually feeling quite chipper. Anyway, you apologize and I apologize to the individual named, huzzah; fact remain's, the sentiment's expressed by editors, writers, and [would-be or bad] critics often enough to scare me.

Ann Sterzinger (Ann Sterzinger), Monday, 20 October 2003 00:47 (twenty-one years ago)

okay what i like is a purported "i can't disassociate momus the individual from momus the artist" comment is turned into "i can't disassociate that comment from that person the critic" by AS and nobody picks THAT up!

Word comes down on the party line
All the suckers on the grapevine are saying:
'Look out boys, here come the Capes and Sticks!'
And they jitter with the funk down Bulblight Lane
When the phone in the phonebox rings again
And it's the Cape and Stick Gang saying 'Just hang around
And we'll stick it to you quick!'

We're the Cape and Stick Boys
Whistling Lillie Langtry
How we laugh when we hear them sigh
The girls who never catch our eye
Wear capes and carry sticks
And the gang is gay

And the rookie's in the alley with his home-made drag in a polythene bag
And the rookie say 'Uh oh, looks like I got out the wrong side of my bed today!'
Cos the Capes and Sticks are waiting for him
And they pierce his ears with a safety pin
And the rookie's trying to laugh it off saying
'I was thinking of doing that anyway'

They mount a double-decker with their Lyons Maids
Sit down on either side of a girl with braids
With too much lipstick on her too-thin lips
And a handbag made of lizard
And the Cape in front of her charms her
Smiles in her face and disarms her
And when they kiss the Stick behind her
Cut off her braids with a pair of folding scissors
Singing:

We're the Cape and Stick Boys
Lillie is our heroine
We play pool all through the air raid
Rape machines in the game arcade
Wear capes and carry sticks
And the gang is gay

Well they don't need knives for their sweet attacks
Just the sticks they keep down the front of their slacks
Big as a family heirloom, Daddy's randy hand me-down
And for a couple of crowns they'll take you to the docks
Whistling Lillie as they pull out their cocks
Drag you to the top of the gantry
Dangle you fifty feet above the ground, singing:

We're the Cape and Stick Boys
Whistling Lillie Langtry
How we laugh when we hear them sigh
The girls who never catch our eye
Wear capes and carry sticks
And the gang is gay

And on every man's hip there's a thermos flask
If you want a sip all you've got to do is ask
Maybe it's bromide tea or maybe ecstasy
They kiss the girls and make them cry
Then they kiss the boys, they're real bi-guys
And we've all got to die some way, some day
You follow me?

Neal 'n' Ann in author-absolutely-charming-to-writer-who-wrote flattering-piece-about-his-book shocker...

I found him absolutely charming.<

[Sorry Ann -- couldn't resist.]

The idea that a critic can assess a work of art without taking into account the artist's reputation/history/previous work/and all gossip thereby pertaining is just impossibly purist. How else are you going to know whether you want to pick something up or not? Being able to put something in cultural context (hi or squalidly lo) is sorta key to finding your way into it. Of course neither should you dismisss something out of hand for those reasons but, well ... it's not like I'm dying to read Richard Speck's first novel. Or, if that's a cheap shot, Ann Coulter's. (There's a particularly annoying article in the Believer this month arguing for blindness in book reviewing, which has set my spleen on edge.) And, not to belabor the Pollack thing but in that particular instance, with a writer whose shtick revolves around playing with personae, "he's an asshole" seems like -- if not the most helpful nugget of literary criticism -- at least mildly relevant to the facts at hand.

Bribery is usually popular.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Monday, 20 October 2003 18:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey Martha! Did you know I was out of the office yesterday?

"Neal 'n' Ann in author-absolutely-charming-to-writer-who-wrote flattering-piece-about-his-book shocker..."

True, but speaking of taking things outta context, I didn't see you there -- I wurn't the only person to whom he wur charming. Granted, everybody was ostensibly there to see him perform, but it's not like he was hanging all over me in particular -- he was even nice to the shaker-egg-employing opening band. And why does being nice to people who have similar sensibilities (I wrote a flattering piece because I really enjoyed the book, not in order to elecit Pavlovian positive-behavior response -- nobody forced or paid me to go to the show)not provide evidence in favor of someone's non-assholism? If you want an asshole, bring me a writer who's slimily nice to people he thinks are assholes just to get on their good side. Then again, there is simple civility... but if you printed a piece about something I'd written that obviously showed you hadn't read it, for example, and was merely a hatchet job, I'd consider the rules of civility already broken. And yes, I have heard that Neal has been less impervious to charges of assholism in the past, but can't assholes be reformed? That's half the reason I brought the whole "You're an asshole for not liking someone's albums anymore because you think he's an asshole personally" thing up -- if people quit denying themselves harmless pleasures there would be (drumroll) LESS MISERABLE ASSHOLES WALKING AROUND!!! I just wanna help! (more puppy eyes)(hides potato in pantsfly)

Also, you're right that book-picking-up behavior shouldn't be taken out of context, but there's a finer point that you make yourself and then sort of back away from: not wasting precious time on something you think you might not like and/or might not interest you, based on suspicion that the writer has nothing valuable to say, vs. actively avoiding/slamming/no longer indulging in somebody's work just because you decide you don't like them personally.

(Remember that I even said in print that I did get a payoff from that one Eggers story even though he and most of his work makes me want to barf.)

(OK, and I do pick on Eggers a lot, because he makes me want to eruct, yes, but this is in part due to his [as I see it] hypocritical shtick -- which is part of his actual texts -- and, as I think I've said to you, he's such a disappointing waste of talent and opportunity.)

And actually, Martha, now that I recall, my first contact with Neal ever was when he gave me an E-mail bizotch-slapping because I'd been publically talking shit about him without reading his stuff first, which caused me to slap my own damn self in the head, go "he's right! whattan asshole I am!", apologize, and go on to be a bit less of an asshole for the rest of my dog's life so far, so I stands consistent!

>not wasting precious time on something you think you might not like and/or might not interest you, based on suspicion that the writer has nothing valuable to say, vs. actively avoiding/slamming/no longer indulging in somebody's work just because you decide you don't like them personally <

First, I meant to come to Subterranean, but I was so goddamn exhausted that I couldn't get off the floor.

That said, other than the Momusthing that started all this, who's doing this? is this a real phenom or a straw dog for the sake of argument? Critic types (at least the ones who want to continue to make a living) are more responsible than I think you're giving them credit for (or if they're not, their editors are). Who (around here or anywhere) is slamming someone in print because they don't like them personally?

But if you're just talking about personal consumption.. who cares? If I can't listen to a record because the guy who made it was mean to me at a party, or said something offensive in Vice, I'm hardly denying myself a simple pleasure. I'm avoiding pain! A natural human impulse, and one I practice often.

{let's just leave aside the stupidity of the fact that you're sitting ten feet away from me and we really don't need to be having this conversation on a message board.)

martha bayne, Tuesday, 21 October 2003 16:04 (twenty-one years ago)

yes, but if we started talking over by your office you-know-who would want to join in and then I'd start doing my shtick with him and you don't want that...

Ann Sterzinger (Ann Sterzinger), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 16:10 (twenty-one years ago)

eruct

Eggers makes you wanna belch? Am I right? Is my English poor?

Eggers has a kind of pale imitation of the Cluster Gang, but from across the atlantic it looks weally weally parochial: they dig Nick Hornby ferfucksake, and they're always griping about writer politics in v expensive magazines - blind reviewing etc.

Who pays to read about that? I'm a writer and i don't. ILX talks about it for free, and lacks the hypocrisy of any movement that claims to be open but is in fact a clique.

I'd kinda noticed that Easton, Enrique, and Suzy were pretty much coming from exactly the same place w/regards to their posts. Kudos to Momus for spotting this.

The oddest part of this thread is how it devolved into a conversation between Chicago Reader staffers.

Any details on where the security alert is coming from? I'll edit whatever's causing it out if I know where to look.

It's because one of the images (I presume) comes from an https site whose certificate has expired. Site is rt2.aeroplan.com, not sure what's referencing it as that url doesn't seem to show up in the source.

What is LBZC?

Abbott, Thursday, 17 April 2008 20:26 (seventeen years ago)

I'm gonna see if I can answer before someone does a "comedy" answer.

It stands for "lol britpop zing culture", it's a combination of two dismissive terms aimed at a loose brand of Brit ILM posters. "lol britpop" being descriptive of a certain type of thread beloved by Enriquit, and "zing culture" being a term for a style of ILX posting that values snark and wit above lengthy Sinister-style ish.

zee see is snappier, but american

Lol Britpop Zing Culture, aka the Zing Crew.

"Zing Crew" is a little more Americanized, perhaps showing a nod of the hat to the Ringtone Crew.

homosexual II, Thursday, 17 April 2008 20:52 (seventeen years ago)

My first week at college I walked up to some interesting-looking people and said "hey, we should start a gang". They looked at me like I was a total fuckwad. As it turns out, that episode is fairly paradigmatic of my life thusfar.

dell, Thursday, 17 April 2008 20:58 (seventeen years ago)

As it turned out, they weren't even particularly interesting. One guy was an albino white aspiring Rastafarian who got busted for buying weed a week later; another was a barely articulate J. Mascis-lookalike stoner dude, and another was some crushingly boring guy with a mohawk who covered his entire dorm room in aluminum foil...
