Well Canadians, they're finally uniting the right. What do we think?

I personally think that for now it doesn't really matter much since as a nation we've moved so much to the center over the last 10 years. Will the infusion of the PCs and their slightly more moderate policies into the Alliance move them enough to the center to where they may have a chance a couple of elections down the road, or are they just plain fucked? Who should they pick as leader? I vote for Evan Solomon because I hate that guy. Ben Mulroney could be a good leader to hate on, too. DISCUSS!!!

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 16 October 2003 15:11 (twenty-two years ago)

is evan solomon r/w?!

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 16 October 2003 15:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Probably not but that's not my point.

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 16 October 2003 15:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Is Evan Solomon a right-leaner?
Ben Mulroney is Canada's best himbo since Gino Vanelli.
It's weird because both of the parties are so screwed up and neither one would be capable of forming gov't at present even if they got the votes.
Hitching your wagon to two lame mares instead of one...

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 16 October 2003 15:20 (twenty-two years ago)

if that's not your point, why not Evan Dando then?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 16 October 2003 15:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Because I like Evan Dando and he's not nearly as smug. Ben Mulroney reminds me of that whiny guy on Mad TV, you know, the girly man.

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 16 October 2003 15:30 (twenty-two years ago)

sorry, please use can-con pop refrence

dyson (dyson), Thursday, 16 October 2003 15:38 (twenty-two years ago)

this sounds like a job for paul hyde

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 16 October 2003 15:39 (twenty-two years ago)

and i totally don't like this "merger" one bit. mainly because i don't want to see canada become a 2 party system and this is a step in that direction.

dyson (dyson), Thursday, 16 October 2003 15:41 (twenty-two years ago)

don't worry. they won't be able to stay together.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 16 October 2003 15:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 16 October 2003 15:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Ok dyson, Ben reminds me of the Chicken Lady.
What the hell happened to Paul Hyde? I think Paul from Blue Peter would make a good Speaker of the House. He could do that dance like in the "Don't Walk On Past" video everytime he opens Parliament.

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 16 October 2003 15:45 (twenty-two years ago)

NEVER EVER FORGET: The Alliance Party was briefly called CCRAP.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 16 October 2003 15:48 (twenty-two years ago)

pc + ccrap = pc. o' crap¿

dyson (dyson), Thursday, 16 October 2003 15:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I've been told by someone who knows that many long-time PC MPs are simply going to retire before the next election rather than run as candidates for this new party, so any thoughts I may have had regarding a moderating influence from the PC members may be mentalism. This of course means that the new party will stay just as messed up as the PCs and Alliance are now. Paul Martin's promises he's recently been making about trying to strengthen Alberta's (and BC's I guess) presence in Confederation (does anyone say that anymore?) will fuck the new party even more if it succeeds. You're right, dyson. With the NDP becoming increasingly irrelevant federally, that seems to be what we're moving towards. Is a merger with the US far behind?

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 16 October 2003 15:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Do you think the U.S. would be interested in a merger with Canada? It woudl ruin all of my escapist fantasies, certainly.

Chris P (Chris P), Thursday, 16 October 2003 16:16 (twenty-two years ago)

It'll probably never officially happen Chris so don't worry. We do lament the influence the US has over us, but there isn't much we can do about it. We get rich off of you guys so I guess we shouldn't complain too much.

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 16 October 2003 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

This disturbs me greatly. I'd vote PC if given half the chance (last two candidates I had a choice of one was a 25 year IBM veteran (overqualified to fall asleep in Commons) and the other was a local politican who hated university students).
I despise the Alliance, from that manthing Debbie to Harper to [Doris] Day and reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeform leader Bat Manning. They really have a hardon for America which disturbs me.

That said: You heard it on ILX from me first, Mike Harris next PC PM.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 16 October 2003 16:30 (twenty-two years ago)

A bunch of cowboy politicans and a bunch of blue bloods in one party.

Compare Deborah Grey to Elsie Wayne and you'll find only one has class.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 16 October 2003 16:35 (twenty-two years ago)

that would Deb, right?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 16 October 2003 16:38 (twenty-two years ago)

You heard it on ILX from me first, Mike Harris next PC PM.

Sure, when Mike Harris is 80 years old! You think he'll be able to tear himself off the golf course long enough to run?

I work with one guy who looks almost exactly the same as Preston Manning and another guy who looks a lot like George Dubya. Terrifying to walk into the office most days.

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 16 October 2003 16:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I despise the Alliance, from that manthing Debbie to Harper to [Doris] Day and reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeform leader Bat Manning. They really

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 16 October 2003 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Well Elsie hasn't lost an election since going into politics in the 60s so it sure as hell isn't that Debra Grey thingy.

Sure, when Mike Harris is 80 years old! You think he'll be able to tear himself off the golf course long enough to run?

He's already declared his interest in leading the party. He's just got to get his party in order for the next election after Martin blows up in his own face. You can only intimidate your own party for so long.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 16 October 2003 16:54 (twenty-two years ago)

FDR and Mackenzie-King were friends as well Horace.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 16 October 2003 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

But did M-K ever slobber all FDR (the subject of a new, dense bio by Lord Conrad Black) the BM the PM did for Reagan?
And hey, is Brian wearing women's shoes in the photo?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 16 October 2003 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, Im not going to say I liked BM and Rayguns singing Irish tenor tunes together but I wouldn't say he had nearly the say relationship with Bush the Elder. And lets forget about Kim Clark just like everyone forgets about John Turner.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 16 October 2003 17:05 (twenty-two years ago)

BM and GB I are still good-buddies. They sit on a few boards together, and were both involved in Bre-X.
In fact, obscure Bush scion Lonsdale Rutherford Bush sang at Caroline Mulroney's wedding reception with his band, the NAFTones.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 16 October 2003 17:23 (twenty-two years ago)

(ps, my last sentence is all lies)

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 16 October 2003 17:23 (twenty-two years ago)

mike harris running the pc's o' crap is terrifying. terrifying because he'd probably be a good leader (for the party not the country) & with could pull in a decent amount of support. he's already proved himself to be a far better leader than those snorefests currently in charge of either parties. or their predecessors.
i'm scarred now. what if he's the next bm¿ he'll insert the u.s.'s cock so far down canada's throat i'll have no choice but to move to new zealand.

dyson (dyson), Thursday, 16 October 2003 17:44 (twenty-two years ago)

if canada is the mouth that takes the U.S. cock, what does that make NZ at the other end of the world?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 16 October 2003 17:47 (twenty-two years ago)

i miss joe clark :(

jones (actual), Thursday, 16 October 2003 17:54 (twenty-two years ago)

ew.
it makes them as far from the u.s. as possible without having to learn a new language.

dyson (dyson), Thursday, 16 October 2003 17:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I miss Joe Clark's daughter being in the paper.

But what did MH do to hump the US legs? The provincial Tories haven't been on the best of terms with Michigan or NY. He's social policies are more towards Alliance leanings then I'd like but they are still well left of Reeeeeeeeeeeeform yahoos.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 16 October 2003 18:07 (twenty-two years ago)

if canada is the mouth that takes the U.S. cock

I'll be there in December, sweetie.

Chris P (Chris P), Thursday, 16 October 2003 18:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it was Alberta where they were talking about jumping ship to the states so you may be in luck Chris.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 16 October 2003 18:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Some reasons I'd rather not have Mike Harris as a national leader (taken from here:
"Harris leaves a legacy without real successes, but instead a record marked by conflict, animosity, divisiveness, hunger, poverty, homelessness and death," according to Ernie Lightman, a professor of Social Policy at the University of Toronto. "Those who got rich during his watch – and they got very rich – see these outcomes as minor problems, but to most Ontarians, he (Harris) can't leave too soon."

"The final years of his premiership were dogged by controversy, including the water contamination crisis in Walkerton, Ont., which resulted in Harris travelling to the small town of 2,500 northwest of Toronto to express sympathy to the locals – but not to apologize. Seven died as a result of E. coli contamination in Walkerton and more than half the townspeople became seriously ill."

Perhaps you guys in Ontario are just so sick of hearing about the shitty things that happened during his leadership that you've just put them aside, er I mean YOU'RE so sick of them, Noodles! I think it would be disastrous for the new Conservative party to have Harris as leader. Do you think they would buy some sort of new Common Sense Revolution in Quebec or Newfoundland or even here in Manitoba or Saskatchewan? I doubt it.

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 16 October 2003 18:45 (twenty-two years ago)

But what did MH do to hump the US leg
the most infuriating incident, for me, came back when the u.s. was banging its chest threatening to invade iraq. harris was going on about how he thought canadians should rally (without question) behind our good neighbours and went on (in true bm fashion) about canadian political insubordination for not following along. perhaps i am reading too much into that incident - but whatever - i kinda respected harris up until that point.

dyson (dyson), Thursday, 16 October 2003 18:53 (twenty-two years ago)

If your going to bring in Walkerton I don't blame Harris' government at all. It was two local officals astounding level of incompitence that caused that, not the government cuts.

Do you think they would buy some sort of new Common Sense Revolution in Quebec or Newfoundland or even here in Manitoba or Saskatchewan? I doubt it.

Quebec is just going to vote Bloc/liberal again so why bother?

Maritimes has become a federal PC stronghold of sorts in no small part due to Elsie's popularity. The flat lands are cookoo for Reeeeeform so they are hoping to combine to the too and end the vote splitting which is why the liberals have been cleaning up Ontario.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 16 October 2003 19:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry Dyson, I never read anything about his response to the US invasion. I remeber Eves saying the same thing. That would be unfortunate views for him to have in my opinion.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 16 October 2003 19:17 (twenty-two years ago)

will this new party accept Jim Pankiw?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 16 October 2003 19:19 (twenty-two years ago)

http://www.jimpankiw.com/Biography/JP_CanadianPress.jpg

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 16 October 2003 19:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Wasn't the point about Walkerton that if there hadn't been cuts in the number of inspectors it might've been caught? Elsie and Rick Borotsik (Brandon-Souris, my old home riding) are two of the venerable PC MPs that will probably retire rather than run as candidates for this new party.

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 16 October 2003 19:21 (twenty-two years ago)

did you mean to say VENEREAL PC MPs?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 16 October 2003 19:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Reasons I have supported Harris, from Bryan's Article:
"Harris promised many things and one of his legacies might be that he took great pride in making his promises stick. "

Which is my favorite reason for any support I gave him. Recently elected provincial Liberals have already broken one of their major campaign promises in regards to budget.

AND

"He cut taxes, reduced the size of government in the province, cracked down on welfare, encouraged work-for-welfare programs, merged school boards, overhauled the curriculum, amalgamated municipalities, reformed property taxes and rearranged Ontario Hydro"

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 16 October 2003 19:23 (twenty-two years ago)

"He cut taxes, reduced the size of government in the province, cracked down on welfare, encouraged work-for-welfare programs, merged
school boards, overhauled the curriculum, amalgamated municipalities, reformed property taxes and rearranged Ontario Hydro"

and at whose expense?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 16 October 2003 19:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Wasn't the point about Walkerton that if there hadn't been cuts in the number of inspectors it might've been caught?

Thats what the opposition claim. And in most cases it could quite possibly. But in Walkerton you just would have had these people overseeing more people and spreading their incompitence across more towns and people.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 16 October 2003 19:27 (twenty-two years ago)

What do you mean whose expense?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 16 October 2003 19:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Or is not running a balanced budget a good thing unless its the Liberal party doing it? So for Chretien its a good thing to balance the federal budget but provincially they should rack up debt?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 16 October 2003 19:29 (twenty-two years ago)

he did do what he said he would, which is why i respected him to the degree i once did. although i can't say i agree with him on most issues.

and does the line "rearranged Ontario Hydro " creep the shit out of anyone else¿

dyson (dyson), Thursday, 16 October 2003 19:31 (twenty-two years ago)

and the provincial budget was balanced by selling off its assets. that's not necessarily a good way of going about it.

dyson (dyson), Thursday, 16 October 2003 19:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean who paid for the Common Sense Revolution?
Who did the tax cuts favour?
Who did workfare favour?
Just because there are less people on welfare doesn't mean there's less poverty. In fact, it means that the poor are poorer. And thanks to social spending cuts, it means that the working poor, people who never see any benefit from tax cuts are really screwed.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 16 October 2003 19:34 (twenty-two years ago)

1) No one was favoured by the slogan.
2) Anyone who pays taxes.
3) Workfare favoured those of us who pay for people to sit on their ass and collect money. Unexpectedly it also favoured people providing services to those in the program.

I don't see how less people on welfare means the poor are poorer. I agree it doesn't mean the opposite but I don't see how it means the opposite.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 16 October 2003 19:43 (twenty-two years ago)

and does the line "rearranged Ontario Hydro " creep the shit out of anyone else¿

Oh hell yeah! The board of the rearranged Ontario Hydro is even more evil then anything the tories have ever been accused of.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 16 October 2003 19:46 (twenty-two years ago)

workfare = indentured servitude, and it also tends to eliminate ACTUAL JOBS, which makes the social assistance treadmill even harder to get off of.
What do you think happens to people who are removed from the welfare rolls? Do you think they are magically bestowed jobs?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 16 October 2003 19:55 (twenty-two years ago)

horace is otm there

dyson (dyson), Thursday, 16 October 2003 20:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Or get so pissed off at actually having to put effort into getting welfare that they find a job.

Indentured Servitude my ass, its putting in minimal effort and getting back minimal pay. Last I was aware of it also included getting training, which makes it easier not harder to stop sucking at the government teat.

And yes, I do think some of these people stricken from the role of welfare get jobs. What do you think happens to them? They don't magically disappear into the Humber.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 16 October 2003 20:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Why don't you ask the director of your nearest food bank.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 16 October 2003 20:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Because I am asking you. What happens to them?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 16 October 2003 20:06 (twenty-two years ago)

And yes, I do think some of these people stricken from the role of welfare get jobs.

What, do you guys not have homeless people in Canada?

Chris P (Chris P), Thursday, 16 October 2003 20:08 (twenty-two years ago)

We had them before hand too.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 16 October 2003 20:09 (twenty-two years ago)

And we have sort of gotten bogged down in going on about Mike Harris and the failure that was workfare.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 16 October 2003 20:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Look, welfare fraud sucks. It pisses me off too. I mean, I play by all the rules and I can't afford cable TV. I don't have a DVD player. I have to figure out a way to get a new pair of glasses before I go blind. I work long fucking hours and then every now and then I run into my junkie pal who sits around all day and watches digital satellite, plays his X-Box, ands stays stoned. Often on meds that he fraudulently got prescriptions for, and since he's on welfare, the gov't pays for them. That pisses me off deeply. Sometimes I think, yeah, what's this world coming to when the cheats are winning? Sometimes I even get so mad I think about buying a Toby Keith album. But I don't. Because I know that my pal is NOT the norm. Yeah, the social assistance program needs to be reformed (but not Reeeeeformed, as you put it), but not scrapped.
For every guy like that, there's at least as many if not a dozen more single mothers of four trying to keep her children clothed and fed.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 16 October 2003 20:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Ok kids! Let's move things in another direction by discussing humorous Conservative (that's what I'm calling it for now as the Alliance portion cancels out the Progressive part of PC) party leadership hopefuls! I'll start. How about Kim Campbell?!?!?

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 16 October 2003 20:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Simillarly Im not going to pretend workfare worked, its why its kinda been scrapped. But its not responsible for alot of things the NDP were claiming it was going to do it just didn't have the results they were looking for.
The best part about workfare was the way Harris named his cabinet minister in charge of the project to be from the riding possibly least effected and most supportive of the idea, a rich suburb of TO.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 16 October 2003 20:25 (twenty-two years ago)

humorous Conservative hopefuls?
Mel Lastman!

Kim Campbell has the same chance as John Turner has of dethroning Paul Jr.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 16 October 2003 20:31 (twenty-two years ago)

That Day guy who wore wetsuits and other happening gear deserves a chance.
Did Bat Manning retire?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 16 October 2003 20:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I think so.
How about Mike Bullard or the white kid from Buzz? Or no! The guy who slaps people in the nuts from Buzz! Or maybe Bubbles from Trailer Park Boys. GIDDY LEE!!!

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 16 October 2003 20:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Mike Bullard?!?!?

How about Erica Ehm? Or would Debbie Grey not dig her lifestyle or hats?

Nardwaur should run for them. Could you picture him during questioning period or talking to the reporters?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 16 October 2003 20:46 (twenty-two years ago)

"Hello Floyd Robertson! Do you mind if I call you Floyd Robertson, Floyd Robertson?"

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 16 October 2003 20:50 (twenty-two years ago)

He could seriously fuck with Sebastian Bach!

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 16 October 2003 21:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Perhaps he would be too easy a target.
The kink in this merger story will show itself plainly today when former PC leadership hopeful David Orchard will sound off on the apparent betrayal committed by Peter MacKay in going ahead with the merger (the "deal with the devil" made at the last PC convention where Orchard threw his support behind MacKay on the condition that he 1) re-examine free trade and 2) NOT merge with the Alliance). If his words have enough sway the merger could fall apart as the PCs need to ratify it with a 2/3s majority. THE PLOT THICKENS! Fucking hell am I a dork.

Bryan (Bryan), Friday, 17 October 2003 11:24 (twenty-two years ago)

that's right, i forgot about that whole thing with orchard. between him and joe clark this thing could be dead by the afternon.

dyson (dyson), Friday, 17 October 2003 12:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know how, but MacKay already got away with it. He was told to walk away from the table by the exec but for some reason they didn't enforce that. Seems everyone but David Orchard knew this would happen the first possible moment after the deal was made. Whadda twinkie.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 17 October 2003 12:50 (twenty-two years ago)

We'll see. Orchard only had 25% support at the convention so even if all of his supporters vote against it it could still go through. In any event I can't see how MacKay gets through this cleanly.

How about Raffi as the new leader?

Bryan (Bryan), Friday, 17 October 2003 12:54 (twenty-two years ago)

MacKay killed any hopes of ever leading the party, though garenteed himself a [shadow] cabinet position. Conservatives need 2/3 majority at a nation convention to have this deal go through. Reeeeeeeeeeeeeeform, only need 50% support and can do that via mail in ballot.
The papers are now reporting Bernard Lord may jump into the action. Does anyone west of Quebec even know who that is?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 17 October 2003 13:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Premier of New Brunswick. He might be a good candidate. He's very young, almost as young as MacKay. Alliance freaks won't like that I don't think. Other than that I don't know much about him. Do you think he's right wing enough for the Alliance?

Bryan (Bryan), Friday, 17 October 2003 13:14 (twenty-two years ago)

He's conservative and a typical Maritimer, he's not a ranting looney so I have no clue if the Alliance will like him or not.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 17 October 2003 13:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I was trying to find this picture without looking at it:
Not Safe For Sanity. She should run for governor of California after Arnie.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 17 October 2003 13:42 (twenty-two years ago)

That was a classic! I'd vote Conservative if she was leader just to see if she'd get all nekkid in Parliament!

So it's an "utter betrayal", eh? No kidding.

Bryan (Bryan), Friday, 17 October 2003 13:54 (twenty-two years ago)

ha ha; how great would it be if as a result of all this orchard & co. start a new party.
merge of right causes divide of right. how poetic.

dyson (dyson), Friday, 17 October 2003 14:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I wonder who carries more wieght in Tory backrooms, BM the exPM or Joe Who? Either way its going to be a couple of crazy monthes leading into the next election, which will likely be another liberal majority weakerthan the last. Orchard will go along with it if the party votes that way. Anyone radical to break off after 66% majority will be banishing themselves to Rhino Party land.
For a brief moment asume that the this Conservative party does well enough in Ontario to drop Liberals to a minority government. Who deals with who? NDP will probably get just over or under offical party status again, Bloc get the same seats and this time no indies. How long do you give the Liberal/NDP govenrment?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 17 October 2003 14:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, an Ontarion Leader will not go over well. I mean the whole reason Western Canadians started the Reform Party (I mean other than to promote loopy religious beliefs, save their marriages from homosexuals, and wear snappy clothes) was because they didn't feel represented by Eastern-centric gov'ts.
Mind you, most of the people who were involved in starting up the Reform Pary are really really really old now. Like old enough to be mentioned in Deuteronomy (which they aren't, because that would mean they were Jewish, which most of them aren't. I think Ezra Levant might be though.). So there probably wouldn't be that much of an uproar. Western Right Wingers think Ralph Klein walks on water (closer inspection reveals it to be vodka, however) and will do whatever he says.

x-post: Maybe Orchard will try to keep the Progressive Conservative name?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 17 October 2003 14:12 (twenty-two years ago)

They already decided on the name which was bigger stumbling block then it should have been ("Conservative Party of Canada") and the fact the party will be offically French/English.

Im still thinking Mike Harris looses next years election, wins the next, fails to get re-elected and Benard Lord takes over. Thats my long term speculation.

What I really wanna know is why Dyson doesn't like the dropping of a party from the ballot?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 17 October 2003 14:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Is there really a serious movement in Canada to become part of the US?

Nemo (JND), Friday, 17 October 2003 14:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Serious only in the way that it's seriously nutty.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 17 October 2003 14:27 (twenty-two years ago)

In Alberta there was a half hearted mumbling about it shortly after Quebec tried to get out. Mostly by the nutty. Maybe by Ralph Klien one night while drinking, you just never know what he's going to do when he's on the sauce.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 17 October 2003 14:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Mmm sauce...
More serious than an actual merger is the talk of our adopting the US dollar. I personally don't want this until they get around to making their money prettier and a little bigger down there. FEWER SCARY MASONIC IMAGES, MORE LOONS AND MOUNTAIN SCENES!!!

Bryan (Bryan), Friday, 17 October 2003 14:33 (twenty-two years ago)

over this past summer there were a few Alberta Separatist rallies. There are a a few candidates from the Western Independence Party running in the prov. election currently underway in SK.
These people deserve less respect than the Natural Law Party.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 17 October 2003 14:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Alberta separatists? Wow. Alberta really is the Texas of Canada, isn't it?

Nemo (JND), Friday, 17 October 2003 14:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Oil makes people crazy and rich, dangerous combination.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 17 October 2003 14:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the Natural Law Party they had Doug Henning which is more the Green Party or Bloc can say.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 17 October 2003 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah that money idea. If we have to give up on our cash why don't we just adopt the Euro instead?

Im trying to remeber the computer game where Canadian Currency was the universal currency. Arachnuos or soemthing. Funyn game.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 17 October 2003 14:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Do you think that maybe the decline of the Bloc increases the chances of the Conservatives forming government this century more than any charismatic, Ont.-friendly leader ever will?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 17 October 2003 14:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Outside of Def, every leader has been Ontario frendly. Its the way things go when your province is the econimic engine.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 17 October 2003 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the Canadian currency, especially the coins: forest animals and royalty, very Narnian.

Nemo (JND), Friday, 17 October 2003 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

And the Bluenose on the dime! MORE BOATS!!!

Bryan (Bryan), Friday, 17 October 2003 14:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I meant a leader who will appeal to Ont voters, not who like Ont.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 17 October 2003 14:59 (twenty-two years ago)

We have boats on our currency too, ya know. (On the New Jersey, Virginia, and Rhode Island state quarters.)

Chris P (Chris P), Friday, 17 October 2003 15:43 (twenty-two years ago)

What I really wanna know is why Dyson doesn't like the dropping of a party from the ballot?
because i fear a 2 party system worse than death & obv. loosing a party is a step in that direction.

dyson (dyson), Friday, 17 October 2003 15:44 (twenty-two years ago)

we essentially have a two party system provincially, no that's not true. The 12 year reigning NDP and the (rebranded Tories) Saskatchewan Party are neck and neck, and so the laughable Liberals could once again be kingmakers. Only their leader is nerd. Even by Sask Politics standards.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 17 October 2003 15:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 17 October 2003 15:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow! Merl Bryck is the leader of the Saskatchewan Liberals? Cool!

Bryan (Bryan), Friday, 17 October 2003 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

The things he does for money, I'll never understand. He used to be quite practical, now I find he's tactical.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Friday, 17 October 2003 15:57 (twenty-two years ago)

the petitition to change Saskatchewan's name to the infinitely easier to spell TEENLAND starts HERE!

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 17 October 2003 15:59 (twenty-two years ago)

He needs cigarettes, he needs cigarettes, he needs nicotine for full effect.

Bryan (Bryan), Friday, 17 October 2003 16:00 (twenty-two years ago)

He ain't pretty, he just looks that way!

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 17 October 2003 16:29 (twenty-two years ago)

But we have had a two party system almost all the way up till the 70s or 80s. Sure there have been protest votes like CCF and Bloc but its helped keep a majority in government as opposed to weak minority governments constantly crippled by being forced to go to the polls.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 17 October 2003 16:39 (twenty-two years ago)

He's got little jazz-snapping hands!

Chris P (Chris P), Friday, 17 October 2003 16:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow, I love that "Fiber Flax Cluster a Winner for Rural Saskatchewan" is the lead news article on the Sask Liberals website. The subhead should be "It Keeps The Farmer Regular."

Chris P (Chris P), Friday, 17 October 2003 16:52 (twenty-two years ago)

karwacki!

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 17 October 2003 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

ccf (later the ndp) has been around since the 30's, dude.
and saying that a minority government is "constantly crippled" is going a bit far methinks.
i'd rather have more opinions and more ideas as opposed to the us vs. them mentality that result from the often sidetracked & pointless bickering that can go on with only 2 parties.

dyson (dyson), Friday, 17 October 2003 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, check out Gord Campbell for examples of everything that's bad about majority gov'ts.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 17 October 2003 17:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Us forever! Them never!

Chris P (Chris P), Friday, 17 October 2003 17:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Or check out Federal politics from the end of PET to the start of BM the PM for everything wrong with minority governments.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 17 October 2003 17:51 (twenty-two years ago)

you mean Joe Clark?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 17 October 2003 17:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Well BM was the end of it, but Joe and John.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 17 October 2003 18:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Quick Ffact I learnt today: Turner married a Kilgour. Some ten years after his government a Kilgour crossed the floor over GST to the PCs.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 17 October 2003 18:19 (twenty-two years ago)

it's not the entire Liberal Cabinet. It's the swearing in of 3 new ministers though.
Young JC always looks like he should've been on the Addams Family. Ghoulish!

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 17 October 2003 18:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I wonder how much he wanted to hit Turner there?

Bryan (Bryan), Friday, 17 October 2003 18:26 (twenty-two years ago)

probably not as much as Turner has wanted to hit him for the last 20 years.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 17 October 2003 18:27 (twenty-two years ago)

It'd be funny to see him try! JC'd put him on his ass! Fuck do we have crazy politicians here.

Bryan (Bryan), Friday, 17 October 2003 18:30 (twenty-two years ago)

He was probably just pissed that Turner and PET were comparing Oxford to London School Of Economics/Harvard and he had nothing to offer. Or he could just be miffed that he missed out on Lennon:

dyson (dyson), Friday, 17 October 2003 19:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Well PET is looking a little cuddly with Yoko so who knows?
Besides, PET was a horndog:

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 17 October 2003 20:00 (twenty-two years ago)

we have a man-made lake in downtown Regina (they've actually just drained so that they can deepen it for the 2005 summer games)

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 17 October 2003 20:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Friday, 17 October 2003 23:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Here's a poll we can all take part in (on the right side) to pick the new leader. I of course picked Kim Campbell.

Bryan (Bryan), Saturday, 18 October 2003 01:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Good lord, up next week, Kim Campbell sunshine girl!

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 20 October 2003 12:23 (twenty-two years ago)

harper said today, that he needed some unity, like he didnt want anyone who thought brian mulroney was a bad pm, im paraphrasing, but the exact line was fucking hilarous.

anthony easton (anthony), Monday, 20 October 2003 12:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Hahaha, I see pain and suffering for the merged party in the future, the more I think of it; the regular PC supporters will find the new party too extreme and western, while the old Reformies will find it too watered down. The fact that there's so much division in the party this close to the election isn't helpful, and after they fail miserably to get seats in Ontario and Quebec again this time I think it'll be a very short time before a bunch of dissidents form the New Reform Party as a western alternative again, with their original ideals intact.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 20 October 2003 12:57 (twenty-two years ago)

the re-reform party

dyson (dyson), Monday, 20 October 2003 13:10 (twenty-two years ago)

re-re form

dyson (dyson), Monday, 20 October 2003 13:13 (twenty-two years ago)

They know they don't have this election, they aren't even going to have a full constitution in place for the election.
But the squabbling is going to be interesting. Specially in Ontario where support at least in polls form is split. Though I have faith that the the PCs old boys network will prevail. For once, thank god for old rich business men and their connections.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 20 October 2003 13:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Harper on the merger:
"What you saw there was not a marriage, but a civil union."

When they make jokes like that, they aren't helping themselves convince people they aren't a bunch of yahoos.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 20 October 2003 17:05 (twenty-two years ago)

This is about as jingoistic as we can get!

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 20 October 2003 17:14 (twenty-two years ago)

and pigs.
Canadians just walk around in the countryside, looking for stray pigs. When we spot one, we pour maple syrup on it and eat it. No cooking, no butchering, just syrup. That is our shameful Canadian secret. That's why we wouldn't allow any of the Draft Dodgers to go back when Carter offered amnesty.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 20 October 2003 17:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Canadians just walk around in the countryside, looking for stray pigs. When we spot one, we pour maple syrup on it and eat it. No cooking, no butchering, just syrup. That is our shameful Canadian secret.

"Canadian Cannibalism: Fun for the Entire Family": That slogan should prolly attract tourists in droves.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Monday, 20 October 2003 17:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Um, are you suggesting that Canadians are themselves pigs?

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 20 October 2003 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 20 October 2003 18:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Sean?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 20 October 2003 18:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yeah. Might've been back when he was a little tubby from going on those Sweet Marie and Coffee Crisp milkshake binges.

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 20 October 2003 18:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Or all those beer pies at C'est What.

Oh wait, thats me.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 20 October 2003 18:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude, I did meet her but I have never put those vile beverages into me. When I'm lookin' for good Canadian fattenin' up for the winter, I rely on good old classic lard. I believe in the power of lard.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 20 October 2003 18:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Sean "Tenderflake" Crudders. Has a nice ring to it.

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 20 October 2003 18:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Um, are you suggesting that Canadians are themselves pigs?

CP, no need to get your knickers in a knot;> I've got nowt but warmth for my colder brothers (and sisters). I was riffing off of Horace's statement. Seriously.

Scorecard: Bryan and Sean so far, though neither succumbed to the urge to root in the dirt with their nose.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Monday, 20 October 2003 18:33 (twenty-two years ago)

so far.

dyson (dyson), Monday, 20 October 2003 18:46 (twenty-two years ago)

My dad used to eat lard sandwiches. Which is funny, because now he's on the Atkins Diet and he can't eat bread.
And the secret ingredient in my Great-Grandmother's prize-winning baking? Bacon drippings.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 20 October 2003 19:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Bacon Makes It Better! Is one of the slogans I live by. Sadly it was used by Taco Bell a few years ago but it still rings loud and true.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 20 October 2003 19:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Nick, what if I want my knickers in a knot? Why deny me my simple pleasures? Especially if I figure out a way to knot them without using my hands...

Now that that's off my chest...

the ones where you have to be so canadian that beer &/or maple syrup flows through your veins like the might st. lawrence to know what the hell is going on - or to even care in the slightest.

Or to actually get all those Northern Pikes references up there? You sick bastards. =)

I wanna keep on voting NDP - just so long as I don't expect them to actually win or anything.

Kim (Kim), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 03:39 (twenty-two years ago)

ndp is filled with hippy dips, and layton reminds me of a porn star.
pc/alliance i dont have to explain
liberals give me the hebbies, esp. with PM for PM.

actually if it werent for the splitting up the country thing, the bq would be brilliant

anthony easton (anthony), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 03:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Voting for the Natural Law or Green Party are we Anthony? ;)

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 12:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Just trying to think now, aside from seperation, do the BQ ever make a positioning statement?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 13:03 (twenty-two years ago)

why should they?
"Oh, we'd like to not be a part of your country, and also revamp the criminal code, which doesn't affect us at all."

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 14:33 (twenty-two years ago)

But the question burning on everyones mind, did they support decriminalized pot or not?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 14:36 (twenty-two years ago)

you could check Hansard

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 14:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Thankfully, the 'money and the ethnic vote' keep the seperatists in their place. Im just trying to imagine what would happen if someone like say Shelia Copps used that excuse for loosing to Junior.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 14:47 (twenty-two years ago)

y'know what the funny thing about that Parizeau statement is...within the Francophone Quebec community, there actually IS quite a bit of ethnic diversity. They're not all pure-laines. They never were.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 14:54 (twenty-two years ago)

And no "pure" Quebecois is rich apparently.

That makes very little sense, Noodles, but ok! ☺

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 14:53 (twenty-two years ago)

you can do what you like with him, but ineffectual opposition from the right has emasculated the left and we have a Whig(liberal) as PM.

he might have to do some sit-ups 1st. you ever actually seen the man - he's huge¡

dyson (dyson), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 16:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Bill Clinton wasn't exactly fit either. There's a picture somewhere of JC jumping over a wall and Bill Clinton just humping it.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 16:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Typical, since Clinton was so quick to hump nearly anything else.

Nick, what if I want my knickers in a knot? Why deny me my simple pleasures? Especially if I figure out a way to knot them without using my hands....

Was that the last election that they did that or the wonderful one with Kim Campbell in 93? And if it was in 93 was there anything Kim Campbell didn't do wrong?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 18:24 (twenty-two years ago)

They have the "It's a trap" wave there!

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 18:25 (twenty-two years ago)

was there anything Kim Campbell didn't do wrong?

Isn't she doing piano bar singing with her pianist boytoy now?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 18:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Not unless shes doing it in LA where she is our consulate general or some other diplomatic position. I heard she was also a guest lecturer at a college down there but couldn't care enough to google and see if that was true.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 18:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Is she still our Beverly Hillbilly?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 18:40 (twenty-two years ago)

What did Beverly Hillbilly do to deserve that?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 18:45 (twenty-two years ago)

her dancing was the definition of wrong, i remember that.

dyson (dyson), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 18:47 (twenty-two years ago)

"dancing"

dyson (dyson), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 18:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 18:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Somebody should call her and see what she thinks of all this:

The Rt. Hon. Kim Campbell
Consul General of Canada
550 South Hope Street, 9th Floor
Los Angeles, California 90071
(213) 346-2700 FAX (213) 346-2767

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 18:50 (twenty-two years ago)

You can ask her for the inside scoop on Elliott Smith.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 18:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I just programmed her number into my phone. First question, "hello Kim, what are you wearing?"

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 18:51 (twenty-two years ago)

be careful Bryan, she may be wearing NOTHING

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 18:54 (twenty-two years ago)

That's what I'm counting on!

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 18:54 (twenty-two years ago)

You'll get her secretary, but since you work in media call her from work Horace.

Quebec's OTHER english daily used to have the PM's phone number on the washroom with "For A Good Time Call Jean 867-5309" You'd get his secretary who wasn't very friendly.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 18:55 (twenty-two years ago)

That pic just sent chills down my spine, and not in a good way.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 18:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the consul general would yes.
Still she looks like Catherine Callbeck to me
http://www.gov.pe.ca/photos/original/callbeck.jpg

dyson (dyson), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 18:59 (twenty-two years ago)

one of my favourite bits in Will & Ian Ferguson's How To Be A Canadian (you probably need a copy, Chris) is when they talk about how people who wear Canadian Girls Kick Ass shirts are probably too nice to ever kick anyone's ass.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 19:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry, no one needed to see a PEI priemer that big.
One thing positive I'll say about Kim Campbell (before a defend the indefenesable) is at least she was saner then the Lethbridge alderwoman.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 19:03 (twenty-two years ago)

and let us never mention her again

dyson (dyson), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 19:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Dar, Dar, Dar, like a Coen Bros movie come to life.
(sorry x-post)

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 19:07 (twenty-two years ago)

You'd think they coulda found the crazy bitch a turtleneck without spaghetti sauce stains on the front.

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 19:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Who our stripper pm or scary woman?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 19:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Heatherington.

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 19:09 (twenty-two years ago)

crazy people cherish their foodstains like battle scars

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 19:09 (twenty-two years ago)

The real issue here is that all those CBC comedy programs actually have something to make fun of again. Except they're not funny. Sigh.

Just a lefty in a righty world.

peanut (peanut), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 19:11 (twenty-two years ago)

What do you mean they're not funny? Air Farce is HILARIOUS! **BOOT TO THE HEAD**

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 19:13 (twenty-two years ago)

but it's no Holmes Show...hey J.Ho should do KC...she could just throw a blonde wig over the LizaMinelli costume and it would be doubly funny

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 19:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry, X-post Bryan but its stillt he same answer.

And what do mean? 22 Minutes is the best thing on TV!?!?!?!

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

(I was specifically referring to Air Farce, possibly the worst show in the history of Canadian television and that's saying a lot, especially considering Degrassi)

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 19:18 (twenty-two years ago)

22 Minutes was the best thing on TV SEVEN years ago.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 19:19 (twenty-two years ago)

(though I haven't seen it since Majumder fled back from the Cedric disaster)

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 19:19 (twenty-two years ago)

He's fucking brilliant. Majumder, not Cedric, obv.

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 19:20 (twenty-two years ago)

You are clearly on crack unless you mean the New Degrassi!

And Air Farce was once upon a time absolutely brilliant on radio.

The worst show in Canadian television history is Check It Out!

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 19:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Pass me the pipe then, G.

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 19:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Why do I sometimes think that Noodles is actually Geoff Pevere?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 19:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Geoff Pevere = NERDBOMBER!!!

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 19:22 (twenty-two years ago)

U R All Gay Bryan! Degrassi Rox!

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 19:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Once Mercer left 22, all down hill. Air Farce is rarely funny.

peanut (peanut), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 19:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I spoke to Mercer on the phone a couple of weeks ago.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 19:27 (twenty-two years ago)

He's no Kim Campbell.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 19:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Everyone needs to harbour an irrational hatred for something generally regarded as good, such as your hatred for proper grammar and spelling, Noodles! ;-)

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 19:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Sadly I remeber the first Chicken Cannon sketch and it was actually funny. Specially since Robert Goulet and Spanish Trawlers were amoung the first targets.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 19:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Noodles = Pevere = the overriding idea that something's sheer Canadianness compensates for a lack of that ethereal quality: Quality.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 19:31 (twenty-two years ago)

They totally need to get Ron James onto 22 Minutes. It is U&K, A

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 19:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Play nice now, Horace!

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 19:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I just don't think those things lack quality.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 19:40 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm going to stick-up for degrassi here too. it rawked because it was equally lame and stupid as high school actually was. that made it real maaan¡

dyson (dyson), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 19:43 (twenty-two years ago)

hey Pevere is a respected intellectual

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 19:43 (twenty-two years ago)

So is John Ralston Saul, but that doesn't mean I want to be compared to either of them. But its a step up from being called nugraham.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 19:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I automatically assume that if someone compares someone to a Canadian intellectual in any way that they're putting them down. Typical or what?

I think this guy needs to be on every Canadian show:
A Big Honking Photo

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 19:47 (twenty-two years ago)

(sorry for the giant photo!)

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 19:49 (twenty-two years ago)

he's not THAT funny--and Mr. Moe is pretty brutal.
These guys just can't seem to get past the "hey, I'm on TV" thing. They're like radio morning guys, only you can see them.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 19:52 (twenty-two years ago)

That better Bryan?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 19:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually I was just hoping that if Daryn was on all the shows he'd get that guy who slaps guys in the nuts to also be on every show. Then I would feign having some sort of disorder which would require that I stay home at all times and watch TV.

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 19:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks Noodles. No one other than Horace really knows who the fuck that guy is anyway.

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 19:57 (twenty-two years ago)

possibly the worst show in the history of Canadian television and that's saying a lot, especially considering Degrassi

cries

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 19:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm sorry Rosemary. I'm a big mean man.

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 19:59 (twenty-two years ago)

new Degrassi is weird though

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 20:00 (twenty-two years ago)

That's still on? Haven't seen Degrassi in ages....

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 20:01 (twenty-two years ago)

TS: The Holmes Show VS. the Entire On-Air Staff of YTV for all of History (except for PJ Katie, who I used to have a big crush on)

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 20:05 (twenty-two years ago)

PJ Phil was pretty funny. Please tell me the Holmes Show isn't actually on anymore.

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 20:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it is. Somebody I know told me that if I wanted to pitch sketch ideas to them they could hook me up. I politely declined.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 20:12 (twenty-two years ago)

What a wasted opportunity! I'm sure if we put our heads together we could get that piece of shit off the air in no time!

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 20:19 (twenty-two years ago)

are you kidding? nobody at CTV even watches it I bet. I mean, they need to have CanCon, they know nobody will watch it and the Holmes Show is dirt cheap (esp. if they're using freelance writers--not that there's been any indication that they're USING writers at all). It will last until Holmes has been on the air long enough to be a Canadian Icon be default. Then it will be cancelled, and Geoff Pevere and Mr. Noodles will collaborate on a hefty book weighing in on how the Holmes Show defined us as a generation, particularly in light of how Canada has always been the David Guest to the USA's Liza Minelli.
THe book will be turned into a CBC miniseries starring Colm Feore and and that chick from Anne of GG and sweep the Geminis.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 23 October 2003 15:54 (twenty-two years ago)

tell me more of your fantastic visions of the future, horace

dyson (dyson), Thursday, 23 October 2003 18:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm kinda disturbed by my future as a copy editor. Specially since amoung other things I spent the day applying for a transfer.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 23 October 2003 18:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Since moving here, I've been suprised at how vacant and cheap Canadian TV is -- I thought it'd be more cerebral than American TV, but it's even tackier. At least we're not that tacky in the UK.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 23 October 2003 18:12 (twenty-two years ago)

who wants to offer me a bribe?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 23 October 2003 18:55 (twenty-two years ago)

What could we bribe you to do?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 23 October 2003 18:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 23 October 2003 18:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 23 October 2003 19:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 23 October 2003 19:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Mel or Miller?
Its going to suck big time if Miller gives the DVP road tolls.
Can we recall him if he does?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 23 October 2003 19:18 (twenty-two years ago)

CHA CHING

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 23 October 2003 19:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Arnold for Mayor!

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 23 October 2003 19:22 (twenty-two years ago)

no way, dude - stefan brogren (aka snake) for mayor¡

dyson (dyson), Thursday, 23 October 2003 19:56 (twenty-two years ago)

You are all poxy fules if you don't vote for singin' Ben Kerr. He's clearly the only logical choice.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 23 October 2003 20:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Whack the mayor!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 23 October 2003 20:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd vote for Larry Gowan, he's got the criminal mind.

he'd fit right in

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 23 October 2003 20:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I just wanted...

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 23 October 2003 20:50 (twenty-two years ago)

...to thank everyone for getting this thread up to 300 posts. Now I can go home.

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 23 October 2003 20:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, I need to read ILE more often. I completely missed this thread, which is stupid, because I'm studying canadian history, believe it or not. and fuck me for missing the Gowan party.

Anyone who thinks Harris has a shot at PM needs to remember how desired his departure was by most of Ontario. That last election was, in a large way, a referendum on his 'Common Sense Revolution'. He is not, so far as I know, a well-liked fellow outside of the Fraser Institute. He left office because he couldn't get re-elected.
In BC, people are getting scared quickly of Campbell's ultra-right gov't, and the line of influence to Gordo from Harris would be very, very easy to draw.

Plus, see, no former premier has ever, EVER, gone on to Federal success. The last premier to lead a federal party was John Bracken, who jumped from Manitoba to the Federal Tories in the '30s. There's simply no tradition of it, and tradition is the one constant in Can. politics. (for example, three party leaders are the sons of former cabinet ministers: Layton, MacKay, and Martin) Recent provincial stars to lead federal parties include Stockboy and Alexa McDonough. There is no pedigree there.

Oh, and remember how John Turner was the Lib's golden boy in 1984? He lost to Trudeau back in the day, chafed and chafed as Finance minister, assumed the natural mantle when Trudeau retired, and promptly derailed when faced with an election. When he had to take a stance or be anything more than bright blue eyes, he collapsed. I mean, yeah, Chretien is no Trudeau, and there's no opposition with governing credibility right now, but Martin isn't necessarily the be-all end-all of juggernauts.

derrick (derrick), Sunday, 2 November 2003 10:10 (twenty-one years ago)

How are you like brioche, derrick?

Bryan (Bryan), Sunday, 2 November 2003 10:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Plus, see, no former premier has ever, EVER, gone on to Federal success
Well, Tobin had SOME success...not as the leader, sure. More interesting looking at the success of people going from the federal level back to provincial, like John Charest and Lucien Bouchard. Hm. I sense a trend here.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Sunday, 2 November 2003 15:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry Derrick, that was a particularly lame joke. Thanks for visiting this thread. Anyway, so yeah, Harris has come out and said he won't run for the leadership of the COnservative Party. Is he a lying liar and this is a new lie he's telling, or is he really not interested? As an aside, Horace, maybe you don't give a rat's ass about this but GO RIDERS!!!

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 3 November 2003 14:30 (twenty-one years ago)

WooHOOOOOO Riders!
I'm torn between wanting the Riders to be in the hometown Grey Cup and not wanting my neighbourhood to burn down if they are. But YEAH, they're hot at last.

Anyway, prov to fed, SK has a bit of precedence in this, Tommy Douglas was as successful as could be when he was leader of the NDP following his time as Premier of SK, and Ralph Goodale (voted the most popular MP on Parliament Hill, possible deputy PM under PM?) was leader of the no-count Prov. Liberals during the Devine years.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 3 November 2003 14:58 (twenty-one years ago)

That last election was, in a large way, a referendum on his 'Common Sense Revolution'.

I seriously disagree with that. The only groups even trying to urge that stance was the formerly power hungry public unions that had the rug pulled up from under their feet back whent he PCs started cleaning up from the mess the NDP left.

Oh, and remember how John Turner was the Lib's golden boy in 1984? He lost to Trudeau back in the day, chafed and chafed as Finance minister, assumed the natural mantle when Trudeau retired, and promptly derailed when faced with an election.

Jean Chretien also lost to Turner in the 80s. Turner still holds some wacky record like the longest serving leader of the opposition. You might have to tack on the phrase "to never win an election" to make that true or not. Can't remeber.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 3 November 2003 15:03 (twenty-one years ago)

So now that Mike Harris is out, what about Mike Seaver?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 3 November 2003 15:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Or Colt Seaver?

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 3 November 2003 15:08 (twenty-one years ago)

(actually, I was just reading, maybe even in Macleans?? that Alan Thicke's son has just released his debut album and that somebody said "it's as close as we'll get to Stevie Wonder" and by "we" I imagine the quotist meant white people, or possible offspring of shitty Cdn talk show hosts: Buford Petty and Sandmore Bullard go home!"

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 3 November 2003 15:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Why in fuck were you reading Macleans, Horace? I love the name that Alan Thicke's son goes by - "Thicke"!

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 3 November 2003 15:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Unless someone like Lord jumps into the race, Im starting to get convinced that the PCs won't vote for it.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 3 November 2003 15:17 (twenty-one years ago)

we get it at work?
the only other magazine I've read in depth lately is KING, which is the black Maxim. I'm not sure why I bought it, certainly not for the photo of Vivica A. Fox in very few clothing on the cover.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 3 November 2003 15:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I was joking about Macleans. I read it when I'm waiting to see the doctor and when I want to get angry for no reason. Noodles is right, without a strong choice for leader they're not gonna see the point of the merger. I wonder if Peter MacKay can sleep?

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 3 November 2003 15:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I was listening to the talk radio station this morning and they're basically taking it as a given that whoever becomes leader will be PM in 2008.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 3 November 2003 15:25 (twenty-one years ago)

which is very presumptious, consider nobody's willing to make any kind of prediction of the SK prov. election in two days.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 3 November 2003 15:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Well its clear that Martin is willing to be pretty freaking petty in his choice of cabinet ministers. Perhaps they are just looking back at Saint-Laurent's government that followed Mackenzie King's.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 3 November 2003 15:38 (twenty-one years ago)

WTF!?!

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 15:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought for a second the headline actually read "Bono May Take Out Liberal Trash"

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 15:10 (twenty-one years ago)

also, obligatory "If not for Paul Martin, there would be no U2" joke.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 15:11 (twenty-one years ago)

This is kind of unrelated to this thread, but...

WOO HOO HORACE ON THE ELECTION!!! (I think)

A majority NDP government is about as good a result as you could've hoped for given the alternatives (yes yes, I know the arguments about minority governments being good for democracy - I personally don't buy it but that's me). Let's see if they continue veering to the right like Doer's government here.

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 6 November 2003 14:29 (twenty-one years ago)

see "We're having an election"

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 6 November 2003 15:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't even look at that thread as I assumed it was a joke thread about the US elections this week. Sorry, Horace!

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 6 November 2003 15:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I've never heard anyone claim minority governments being good for a country. Perhaps I've been working on Bay too long.

Meanwhile in Ontario, in under a month the Liberals have already broken three major election promises. And the best part is both the NDP and the PC called them on it during the election.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 6 November 2003 15:13 (twenty-one years ago)

You work at the Bay Mr. Noodles?

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 6 November 2003 15:15 (twenty-one years ago)

HAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 6 November 2003 15:16 (twenty-one years ago)

On Bay Street, not too far from the Bay.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 6 November 2003 15:18 (twenty-one years ago)

(sorry Noodles)

We've been amazingly lucky here as far as election promises being broken goes, but I am getting sick of listening to Doer and ministers like Scott Smith (a future premier I'm betting) passing the blame onto the feds whether they're justified in this or not.

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 6 November 2003 15:21 (twenty-one years ago)

They play that game every where. But here it was just plain lies which makes even better when both oppositions go "Told Yeah So!"
Recent line in the Toronto Star: "Joel Duff, Ontario chair of the Canadian Federation of Students, was pleased that the Liberals are keeping this promise."

Canadian Federation of Students are even dorkier then Sask Libs.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 6 November 2003 15:27 (twenty-one years ago)

in defence of the ont. liberals - they hydro rates thing was because of the pc's lying about the books.

dyson (dyson), Thursday, 6 November 2003 15:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't believe the CFS can even operate what with their knees jerking so spastically all the time.

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 6 November 2003 15:33 (twenty-one years ago)

CFS hahaha. Looooo-hooo-zers!

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 6 November 2003 15:33 (twenty-one years ago)

In defence of the SK Liberals (who are giant dorks), nobody actually voted FOR the NDP, they were voting AGAINST the Sask Party.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 6 November 2003 15:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Good enough reason for me.

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 6 November 2003 15:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, but it's still like, the NDP doesn't exactly have a mandate from the people to do anything except NOT SELL the Crowns.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 6 November 2003 15:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Hydro caps, forgot about that. So that makes 4 promises unless you roll Hydro Cap in with budget promises.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 6 November 2003 15:42 (twenty-one years ago)

SK is kinda spinning like a top right now compared to lots of provinces, don't you think Horace? There's always lots to do (I'm sure your health care system is in similar trouble to ours) and there are problems there like the rural population dwindling, but other than that you guys are doing pretty well, aren't you?

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 6 November 2003 15:43 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, except for BSE, Drought, and depopulation, we are doing pretty good.
And the Sask Party gained three urban seats (which they've never had before) and the NDP gained a few rural seats (and of course they own the North), but the division between city and country is alarming!

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 6 November 2003 15:47 (twenty-one years ago)

25,000 people half of whom are aged aged 15-29 moved out of the province in recent years. Despite being the size of 8 or 9 states to the south of us, they got less the a 1/5 of our population. Freaky shit man.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 6 November 2003 15:48 (twenty-one years ago)

25,000 young people left Ontario?
Well, they didn't come here, buddy!

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 6 November 2003 15:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Your province, not mine.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 6 November 2003 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

oh. yeah.
but like do YOU want to come live here?
Especially after all you've heard about SK from its Internet Ambassador of Goodwill, Huckleberry Mann!

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 6 November 2003 16:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd move to Saskatoon or maybe even back to Swift Current. Regina has too many bad memories...

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 6 November 2003 16:04 (twenty-one years ago)

also, it was poorly named

dyson (dyson), Thursday, 6 November 2003 16:10 (twenty-one years ago)

well, that's relative...in Saskatchewan, Regina is an all right name...compared to Mozart, Elbow, Climax, Love, Foreplay, and Buttplug.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 6 November 2003 16:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I had a physics professor from Saskatchewan. We had alsorts of evil physics problems directed at that province I could never visit there without imagining the moon falling into the center of the province or something.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 6 November 2003 16:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't forget Assiniboia, Huck.

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 6 November 2003 16:19 (twenty-one years ago)

They still got nothing on Newfieland.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 6 November 2003 16:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought for a second the headline actually read "Bono May Take Out Liberal Trash"
http://ox.eicat.ca/~scarruthers/ilx/u2-simpsons.jpg
Bono: Hold on! He's talking about waste management... and that affects the whole damn planet.
The Edge (under his breath): Oh, boy, here we go.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 6 November 2003 17:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Sean you have rescued that episode from the gutter of my mind!

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 6 November 2003 18:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Millar wins a relatively tight race with Tory.
Hazel wins 10th election and has been mayor of Missassagua since 1978. Yikes.
CITY's crime reporter just said "Police are like crack addicts, give them some money and all they want is more money", which was the best quote of this election.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 01:30 (twenty-one years ago)

i saw that¡ i laughed my ass off. i love how they hardly let him say a word after that.

& horrah for miller (not millar, dude)(fuck, thank god).

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 15:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Ben Kerr should move here and set up at Portage & Main once they reopen it to pedestrian traffic. Glen Murray's probably gonna go federal when he's finished this term and there's NO ONE decent in line to replace him. I'd vote for Ben as he's so sad.

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 15:44 (twenty-one years ago)

MILLAR WINS TORONTO ELECTION, REPLACES ALL CIVIL SERVANTS WITH ROBOTS WHO LIKE TO BARBECUE. Film at 11.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 15:45 (twenty-one years ago)

one month passes...
I take back what I said about Evan Solomon. He's friggin' hilarious and possibly a national treasure.
http://www3.mb.sympatico.ca/~bshurb/evan.JPG

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 5 January 2004 05:33 (twenty-one years ago)

why did you hate him in the 1st place¿
+ why the change of heart¿ you didn't...

dyson (dyson), Monday, 5 January 2004 06:46 (twenty-one years ago)

...jerk off to his picture? no, I don't swing that way, yo. I saw him on the Sunday morning show today singing and doing confessionals with CBC staffers and it was hilarious. I never really disliked him, I've just always found his attitude a little off-putting. He's quite brilliant, no?

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 5 January 2004 06:50 (twenty-one years ago)

He's no Daniel Richler.

d k (d k), Monday, 5 January 2004 07:08 (twenty-one years ago)

They're so different it's hard to compare. I like them both though I think I'd rather have a beer with Richler.

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 5 January 2004 07:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Who's Evan Solomon? Did he make a video with Paris Hilton?

sym (shmuel), Monday, 5 January 2004 08:01 (twenty-one years ago)

No, no, Evan Solomon is a smarmy Canadian broadcaster in the Ralph Benmurgui (sp???) mold, who last year fooled two dozen single American women into thinking he wasn't wearing Douglas Coupland's toupé on the Fox Network's hit reality series, Audience in Coma.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 5 January 2004 14:46 (twenty-one years ago)

He is very smarmy but I decided yesterday that it's ok, and Ben Ralphmergui is COOL, dammit!

"That was the Darling Buds. They're Welsh."

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 5 January 2004 14:55 (twenty-one years ago)

NO! DAVID WISDOM SAID THAT!!!

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 5 January 2004 14:55 (twenty-one years ago)

He was the best part of the hitchhiking doc/diary.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 5 January 2004 15:00 (twenty-one years ago)

How's your head today, Horace? Mine is hurting pretty badly after being hit over the head by the big meaty ham fists of 'Human Cargo'. I must say that Kate Nelligan is PURE SEX.

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 5 January 2004 15:04 (twenty-one years ago)

my head is frostbiteen, it was -49 Celsius (windchill inc.) when I left my apt. this morning. And the fire alarm in my building had been going off every 3.5 hrs.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 5 January 2004 15:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, -45 with the windchill here, -33 without it and like a moran I forgot to plug my car in (it reluctantly started).

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 5 January 2004 15:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I haven't seen any five-day-forecasts, but I'm sure day 5 is about 20 degrees warmer. I hate when they out-and-out lie like that. Though the alternative is often unfathomable.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 5 January 2004 15:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Here you go. Shitty week. I'm going down to Minneapolis for Tuesday and Wednesday and it's only going to be 5 or 6 degrees warmer there but I'll be happy for it.

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 5 January 2004 15:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't have a problem with a thread on the United Right also being about Weather (pointless to pretend to predict, but a national pastime nonetheless) and Evan Solomon, who reminds me why we beat up on smart kids in grade school.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 5 January 2004 15:21 (twenty-one years ago)

are you saying you weren't smart¿

dyson (dyson), Monday, 5 January 2004 15:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm trying to block out from my memory that I was the smart kid who got beat up and had no friends.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 5 January 2004 15:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I was the smart kid who beat up on the kids who beat up on the smart kids which I guess that sorta made me a dumb kid. Predicting the weather is an almost pointless pursuit, but at least with temperatures they've been close this winter but precipitation predictions have been out to lunch for us, anyway.

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 5 January 2004 15:29 (twenty-one years ago)

prediction: it will be cold there. and not quite as cold here.

dyson (dyson), Monday, 5 January 2004 15:48 (twenty-one years ago)

it hit minus 35 over the weekend,

anthony easton (anthony), Monday, 5 January 2004 15:49 (twenty-one years ago)

But dyson, it's a dry cold unlike there. I hope you stayed inside, Ant.

I need one of those Salton coffee cup warmer things.

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 5 January 2004 15:50 (twenty-one years ago)

it's so cold I'm thinking about staying at work tonight.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 5 January 2004 15:58 (twenty-one years ago)

"That was the Darling Buds. They're Welsh."
NO! DAVID WISDOM SAID THAT!!!

Bzzt. You were right the first time. I like Benmergui, it was just that his late-night TV show wasn't really him. And Evan Solomon I didn't want to like because I found Shift mag so insufferable, but I gotta give it to him, he's okay as a broadcaster.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 5 January 2004 15:58 (twenty-one years ago)

AH FER CHRISSAKES.

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 5 January 2004 16:02 (twenty-one years ago)

apparently, the left is sort of getting it together as well

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 5 January 2004 16:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Jack Layton roxors.

sym (shmuel), Monday, 5 January 2004 19:20 (twenty-one years ago)

he's actually quite witty. i hate that 'stache of his tho.

dyson (dyson), Monday, 5 January 2004 21:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I like the stache! Makes him look virile. Moustaches generally are a bad idea for today's politicians. But Layton rocks it.

sym (shmuel), Monday, 5 January 2004 22:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Hi. I'm back.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 00:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Belinda Stronach is expected to be a candidate for the Conservative Party leadership (yummy ;-) ), Peter MacKay isn't (it would've been HILARIOUS if he had decided to run) and Harper's announcing today. I still think the next federal election is going to be disastrous for the Conservatives. Also I feel more than a little sad that Boucher's streak was broken last night.

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 12 January 2004 16:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I still think the next federal election is going to be disastrous for the Conservatives. I like how some of them are expecting that Paul Martin will hold off the election until fall so that the new party can have some time to settle into their new leader. Can someone explain to me why they think their sworn enemy would do them any favours?

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 12 January 2004 16:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe in the backs of their minds they're thinking/hoping Martin will be cocky and wait? This is NOT going to happen. This of course gives Harper a big advantage going into the leadership race but will hurt things with the PC members (for example Rick Borotsik in Brandon-Souris will not run as a Conservative candidate with Harper as leader). Paul Martin is probably chuckling quietly to himself down at the Americas summit right now.

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 12 January 2004 16:44 (twenty-one years ago)

quietly to himself¿ try outloud and uncontrolably. i know i would be.

dyson (dyson), Monday, 12 January 2004 16:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean, PM didn't get to be PM by being gracious to his opponents.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 12 January 2004 16:52 (twenty-one years ago)

It could either be that or giggling about Vincente Fox's name.

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 12 January 2004 16:53 (twenty-one years ago)

x-post
no. and they were in the same party¡

dyson (dyson), Monday, 12 January 2004 16:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Speaking of foxes! http://www.competeprosper.ca/img/stronach_b.jpg

Luigi Vampa (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 16:32 (twenty-one years ago)

That's what I was getting at above! She's YUMMY!!! I hope she falls more to the progressive side of the party though with an endorsement from Mike Harris I doubt she would (Noodles to thread to rebut?). I'm a little bit curious to find out what her politics are. She'll be here soon so maybe I should talk my boss into letting me go to whatever rally she has and then I can hit on her!

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 16:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm watching her newser right now and she seems pretty hard right. And very wooden. Oh wait, that's me!

Luigi Vampa (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 16:41 (twenty-one years ago)

i seriously, she's a very poor speaker

Luigi Vampa (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 16:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Luigi Vampa (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 16:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Is anyone gonna listen to her anyway? She's eyecandy! She'll probably get better as the campaign goes along and I think she'll do well but won't win. She's going to run for Parliament anyway.

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 16:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I think she'll win. This is the party (essentiallly) who elected S.Day simply because he had a nice jetski.

Luigi Vampa (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 16:52 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, and she's rich.

Luigi Vampa (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 16:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Perhaps you're right though I almost think they learned their lesson there (with Stockwell). There's something not quite right about Harper's face but I can't figure it out. That kiss Marg Delahunty laid on him was one of the craziest things ever.

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 16:54 (twenty-one years ago)

ha ha. i laughed my ass off at that. i saw it coming and was yelling "ruuuunnnnnn" at my t.v. - i could not believe what a sloppy kiss that was too. he's probably carrying her child now¡

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 16:59 (twenty-one years ago)

They don't seem to learn. They're bleeding high-profile MPs, Keith Martin, even! His stated reason for defecting was that they were too extreme! And he was in the Reform Party!

So obviously there is something broken deep within this party, since the whole point of the merger (from the reform/alliance[who did they ally with again?]) was to appear less extreme, and therefore broaden their appeal.

Luigi Vampa (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 17:00 (twenty-one years ago)

+ luigi¿ wtf¡

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 17:08 (twenty-one years ago)

huh?

Luigi Vampa (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 17:09 (twenty-one years ago)

luigi - wuzzupwidat¿

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 17:24 (twenty-one years ago)

the name? It's from The Count of Monte Cristo, Luigi Vampa was the king of the bandits who often helped out with the more unsavoury aspects of the Count's mission of Providence.

Luigi Vampa (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 17:26 (twenty-one years ago)

ahh. so is he a role model to you then¿

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 17:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, I like his name, and, uh, I've been trying to model my life after the Count's actually for the last 10 months (y'know, get filthy rich, kill my perceived enemies, eat a lot of fine hash, etc).

Luigi Vampa (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 17:32 (twenty-one years ago)

nice. inspired by this thread no doubt.

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 17:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Jeez. Belinda kinda looks like a puppet on her website. Photo gallery! At least she's honest about it. She's here tonight which sucks as I'm gonna be busy.

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 17:42 (twenty-one years ago)

In a way, I hope she gets to be PM right quick if only so that Bush can give her a nickname.

Luigi Vampa (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 17:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Belinda was on a local radio talk show here today for her first interview after declaring her candidacy. You're right, Luigi - she's a horrible speaker. I listened to the first couple of minutes of it and I can't remember the last time I heard so many ums and ers...well, maybe the last time I had a testicular exam.

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 15:23 (twenty-one years ago)

hmmm, having a testicular exam performed by Belinda...

Luigi Vampa (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 15:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm a little bit curious to find out what her politics are. She'll be here soon so maybe I should talk my boss into letting me go to whatever rally she has and then I can hit on her!

She's probably the second or third worst choice after Harper and that other reform loonie. Much like the other mega rich she could have done a lot more work by not running. Like Black and Asper in years past she had friends in all sorts of spots across the country. But unlike the Irvings no one seems to hate Magna with the same passion. Without Izzy, Conrad and her (now that she's a public figure) there is a huge demand for rich people to pamper our nation's politicians with fishing trips, dinners and donations.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 22 January 2004 02:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll be amazed if anyone can keep the Refooooooooooorm cowboys on a tight leash.

Asked if that perception was solidified when Chrétien mused about lighting up a joint after he left office, Cellucci reacted with a nod and sustained chuckle.

God I already miss him.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 22 January 2004 04:12 (twenty-one years ago)

(my connection went down while I was trying to post this a few hours ago - it's in repsponse to Bryan's article link)

"What we have here is the coming home to roost of the whole culture of celebrity politics . . . the MuchMusic view of the world that if you look good and present well on stage you're going to be interesting to the world."

Haha - the omnipresent "Much Music view of the world"! I guess there is a point there, although I think they've almost got it backwards - meaning that at least an equal part of the problem here is that she's being evaluated because of how how she looks, probably moreso than her marketing is capitalizing on it. The headline today by her picture on The Sun (crap paper, I know) was "Blonde Ambition!". WTF. I'm so thrilled that her hair is what's important here - you don't see screaming headlines about any of the grey haired men in politics saying "Steel Wheels!" I mean fuckrightoff.

Kim (Kim), Thursday, 22 January 2004 04:42 (twenty-one years ago)

The Sun seems to get a free pass on alot of things sadly. I chalk it up to the colour comics.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 22 January 2004 04:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Wait, wait, you were actually expecting more than a base-level, reactionary, unintelligent pile of horseshit from the Sun? What were you thinking?

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 22 January 2004 04:51 (twenty-one years ago)

yes, I was expecting a girl in a bikini on the back page. Instead THEY PUT THEM ON THE COVER!

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 22 January 2004 04:53 (twenty-one years ago)

If only it were a "Sun thing" with their Tits and Lies and all that -well, I'd be much happier. Unfortunately I'm hearing the same lame things elsewhere, The Sun is just the most blatant about it.

Kim (Kim), Thursday, 22 January 2004 04:54 (twenty-one years ago)

My favourite thing about the Sun is when they put some swimsuit model on the cover right next to a huge headline saying something like POLICE APPOINT NEW ETHICS COMMISSIONER.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 22 January 2004 04:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe the layout editor just assumes that the police dress code is really relaxed these days?

Kim (Kim), Thursday, 22 January 2004 04:56 (twenty-one years ago)

The Dar Heatherington saga takes a new wacky turn. Now the question is: who will play her (here's a pic) in the CBC made for TV movie? I vote for Kevin McDonald.

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 20:06 (twenty-one years ago)

if CTV does a telemovie it'll definitely be Wendy Crewson though.

Huckadelia (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 20:09 (twenty-one years ago)

but I agree that Kevin McDonald would be best.

Huckadelia (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 20:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, what about the Public Works scandal? The piano player in a brothel analogy works for me sort of. Martin will technically be able to deny he knew about it but come on, $100,000,000 funneled into Quebec Liberal-friendly firms and he, a Quebec minister, knew nothing about it? Are we all already sick of this story? Are we all fucking sick of public inquiries?

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 20:39 (twenty-one years ago)

And what the hell is up with Belinda? As soon as that Globe (the U.S. tabloid) cover appeared claiming she's knocking boots with Bill Clinton, she dropped off the face of the earth! Whatta maroon!

I still like this one the best.
You know, if Martin had his way the PC's could have switched platforms with the Liberals. For some reason, the crap he is shuffling on Shelia Copps, complete with parachuting one of his cabinet ministers to fight for her riding pisses me off more.

Conservatives reject nomination bid by former Sask. premier Grant Devine By Tim Cook REGINA (CP) — Former Saskatchewan premier Grant Devine — the man who led the province during one of the biggest political scandals in modern Canadian politics — won’t be allowed to seek a nomination for the federal Conservatives, the party announced Thursday. “The national nominations committee, in consultation with the local nominations committee for Souris-Moose Mountain, has determined that Mr. Devine’s name would not be entered in the contest for the Conservative party nomination for Souris-Moose Mountain, said party official Tom Jarmyn. He would not provide a reason for rejecting Devine’s nomination bid. Devine called a news conference for Thursday afternoon in Regina. Devine and his provincial Tories governed Saskatchewan from 1982 to 1991. Sixteen Conservative members of the legislature and caucus workers ended up being convicted of fraud and breach of trust from 1987 to 1991 for illegally claiming hundreds of thousands of dollars from government allowances. The main scheme involved filing false expense claims based on phoney invoices to numbered companies. While the scandal happened on Devine’s watch, he was never linked to it, nor was he ever charged. Devine announced last month that he was seeking the nomination for the federal Conservatives. “The fire’s still there, he said at the time. Roy Bailey, the Canadian Alliance MP who represents the riding, is not seeking re-election. One of the challengers for the nomination, Ed Komarnicki, said he would have preferred to have delegates in the constituency decide whether Devine should run or not. “It’s something that should have been decided locally, Komarnicki said when contacted by The Canadian Press and told the news. “We have been in the membership sales and, by my records and information, we have outsold him and we are confident we can win on the ground and would have won on the ground. “That is the way we would have preferred it. The highest-profile Saskatchewan Tory caught up in the expense claim scam was Senator Eric Berntson, who was convicted in 1999 of 11 counts of fraud stemming back to his days in the Saskatchewan legislature. The Conservatives lost the 1991 provincial election when the NDP, under Roy Romanow, won a landslide majority. During its years in power, the Devine government ran huge deficits. When the Tories were removed from office the NDP claimed that the province was on the brink of bankruptcy.
