The Evil Dead - Classic or Dud?

I asked myself this before knowing the answer. I THINK its fun.

Is it as "influential" (duck) as is claimed? Every director these days seems to be doffing their caps to them - I ain't sure meself.

Johnney B (Johnney B), Sunday, 19 October 2003 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the first two are influential in that they show how brilliantly resourceful Sam Raimi is, a quality that apparently is favorable to Hollywood execs now (which is too bad for us - I thought Spider-Man was unwatchable). Notice that another resourceful director who started off making gore/zombie films, Peter Jackson, has also emerged as a major director. Who's next, that Coven guy?

Ernest P. (ernestp), Sunday, 19 October 2003 16:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Um, they's classic. Don't know about influential or whatever but all three are pretty damn entertaining. There's a reason everybody gets excited when they hear Bruce Campbell's in a movie.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 19 October 2003 16:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Did you ever read his book? fucking brilliant!

man i seen bruce campbell speak when i was little at a horror convention. motherfucker is so funny. him and adam corolla have the same kind of pizazz.

Pablo Cruise (chaki), Monday, 20 October 2003 05:18 (twenty-two years ago)

The original is a wonderful example of guerilla film-making, but I was more impressed by the sequel (and v. unimpressed by the next sequel.)

lint (Jack), Monday, 20 October 2003 05:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Aw come on, Army of Darkness was hilarious! Silly, but that was the point. Great fun.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 20 October 2003 06:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I think the typical consensus is (and I agree) that Evil Dead 2 is the real masterpiece in the series. It's probably the movie I've seen most in my life, although I haven't seen it for a couple years. In high school we used to watch it at least once a weekend. Sad. But... but it's so perfect!

Dan I., Monday, 20 October 2003 06:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, the first one is an impressive achievement for the (complete lack of) budget, but ED2 is the influential masterpiece and Army of Darkness is one of my fave movies ever. So, so funny.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 20 October 2003 13:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Did you see that Bruce Campbell has a new book coming out called Make Love the Bruce Campbell Way? The man is a genius.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 20 October 2003 13:36 (twenty-two years ago)

yup, evil dead 2 all the way.

dyson (dyson), Monday, 20 October 2003 13:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I feel so bad for accidentally insulting him*, Bruce Campbell is fantastic. So are all 3 movies in the Evil Dead series.

*a long story

Nicolars (Nicole), Monday, 20 October 2003 13:50 (twenty-two years ago)

the vid games based on Evil Dead = DUD.

Kingfish (Kingfish), Monday, 20 October 2003 13:59 (twenty-two years ago)

What's not to like. I even like 3 lots more than I did when it came out now, though I fall in line w/ all the 2 fans above. I hold only Chainsaw 2 in the same esteem.

brian nemtusak (sanlazaro), Monday, 20 October 2003 18:31 (twenty-two years ago)

The first two films in this series bury the "doing more with less" principle TO THE HILT. Army of Darkness was entertaining (in no small part thanks to the estimable Mr. Campbell [one of my favorite funny-role actors EVAH]), but just not quite as impressive for some odd reason.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 20 October 2003 19:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 20 October 2003 19:56 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah no shit!

teeny (teeny), Monday, 20 October 2003 21:16 (twenty-two years ago)

It's kind of related to the "pictures of you and famous people" thread. Me and my husband met Bruce Campbell last year and he was very funny, nice, etc. My husband was going to have his picture taken with Bruce and Bruce asked me if I wanted to be in the picture. I made this disgusted face and said something like "Ugh, no" because I really hate having my picture taken -- and then I realized he thought I was revolted at the idea of having my picture taken with him. So somewhere out there Bruce Campbell thinks I'm a haughty bitch.

Nicolars (Nicole), Monday, 20 October 2003 21:39 (twenty-two years ago)

No, he may say that, but he's crying on the inside.

oops (Oops), Monday, 20 October 2003 21:41 (twenty-two years ago)

If I wasn't laughing so hard, I could feel sorry for Bruce. Bet that was one of the rare times he got an unintentional ego lesson.

(To answer the question, his acting made Evil Dead 2 more than unwatchable camp.)

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Monday, 20 October 2003 21:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Evil Dead 2 = best film ever, obv.

DG (D_To_The_G), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 17:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I prefer Army of Darkness, but it's pretty clear that I must make an informed decision...

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 17:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't really like The Evil Dead much. there is a great opening sequence, where they are driving along in their car, but you see through the eyes of *something* that's watching them - really creepy. but then the rest of the film goes all arch and comedy schlocky. Arguably the Evil Dead spawned all those shite "funny" ironic horror films, so we must send someone back in time to kill Sam Raimi. Before he made the film, obviously.

DV (dirtyvicar), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 18:58 (twenty-two years ago)

My coworker Tom saw Mr. Campbell in person a couple of weeks back when Bubba Ho-Tep opened in a theater across from UCI -- says he was perfectly entertaining and hilarious, not hard to believe!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 19:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I read a bit of his book but forgot to buy it. MUST RECTIFY.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 23:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I watched Evil Dead for the first time ever last night in my room in the dark just before going to bed and it was scary.

Nathalie (stevienixed), Saturday, 14 November 2009 22:13 (sixteen years ago)

Part II is one of my favorite movies ever. The first one is more straight-faced, but the second balances comedy, horror, and exquisite low budget film effects (and sound and cinematography) with staggering results.

Nathalie (stevienixed), Tuesday, 17 November 2009 21:58 (sixteen years ago)

i revisited the first Evil Dead a few weeks ago and was disappointed by the fact that it kind of bored me. it was a movie i loved the hell out of when i was younger. don't know if i was just in a weird mood or i'd finally seen it too many times.

evil dead 2 is still #1 for all-time though.

Shocked at how many reviews of this remake reference the humor of the first "Evil Dead." Um, I don't think it's supposed to be funny. Is every critic lazing conflating it with "Evil Dead 2?"

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 6 April 2013 21:33 (twelve years ago)

It's not AS outright slapstick as 2 but it's still got a lot of dark humor working in it. But, I mean. It's Raimi!

Matt Armstrong, Saturday, 6 April 2013 21:51 (twelve years ago)

Evil Dead has a couple funny moments but it's pretty pure horror

Matt Armstrong, Saturday, 6 April 2013 21:52 (twelve years ago)

perspective, i guess. now that i think about there weren't many other people laughing at the remake either, taking it for "pure horror"

fauxmarc, Saturday, 6 April 2013 21:56 (twelve years ago)

2 has three stooges references and stuff, the first one has rather standard comic relief (the eye closing bit) and the POV shots of the demon spirit but it's mostly just macabre.

Matt Armstrong, Saturday, 6 April 2013 22:00 (twelve years ago)

wikipedia re: the first one's release:

Woolley, Newman, and several critics complimented the film for its unexpected use of black comedy, which elevated the film above its genre's potential trappings.

fauxmarc, Saturday, 6 April 2013 22:02 (twelve years ago)

I guess it has more comedy in it than Halloween or whatever, but it's like 3 or 4 moments at most, compared to 15 minutes of Ash chasing his hand around

Matt Armstrong, Saturday, 6 April 2013 22:04 (twelve years ago)

Evil dead (the original) is less funny than the majority of horror films of the time - looking at it as a comedy is pretty wrong headed imo.

My Chemical Romance did 9/11 (jjjusten), Saturday, 6 April 2013 22:13 (twelve years ago)

Ok that's kind of a grand claim - the point is that any comedy in the original is incedental at best

My Chemical Romance did 9/11 (jjjusten), Saturday, 6 April 2013 22:23 (twelve years ago)

The "is this comedy?" aspect of the first one is why I like it the best. ED2 is obv a more accomplished movie, but lacks the "what the hell am I watching?!" edge. But we covered this in the horror movie poll rollout.

cacao nibs (Eric H.), Saturday, 6 April 2013 22:37 (twelve years ago)

"Evil Dead" is clearly not comedy because the second one clearly is. Ipso facto.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 6 April 2013 22:38 (twelve years ago)

I haven't seen the new one, but we're clearly at the deranged stage where showers of blood and totally over the top gore=funny.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 6 April 2013 22:40 (twelve years ago)

Happily.

cacao nibs (Eric H.), Saturday, 6 April 2013 22:41 (twelve years ago)

finally!

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 6 April 2013 23:22 (twelve years ago)

the evil dead has always seemed pretty funny to me, but maybe i just mean "gleefully absurd" or w/e. it's scary as hell and not broadly comical in the manner of ED2, but it's got this crack-brained, go-for-broke loopiness that's hard to take entirely seriously.

i suspect i wasn't in right frame of mind for the new remake/sequel/reboot. i went alone to a nearly deserted matinee showing, and wound up feeling kind of disconnected from the film. the gore effects are excellent, the energy level stays high throughout, and i had a good time catching all the references to and inversions of the original(s), but the story and characters didn't interest me. to be honest, the cheap and dirty punk rock feel of the original is a big part of its charm, afaic, and there's no way a big slick studio production could replicate that. still, i'll probably see it again sometime in the next couple weeks.

contenderizer, Sunday, 7 April 2013 19:11 (twelve years ago)

Was mostly just glad that the drugs-i.e.-inner-demons angle was mostly a red herring.

cacao nibs (Eric H.), Sunday, 7 April 2013 19:17 (twelve years ago)

yeah, that baffled me. the suggestion is very prominent but goes nowhere. which is as it should be, but why feint that way in the first place?

contenderizer, Sunday, 7 April 2013 19:33 (twelve years ago)

It's just a conceit to keep them in the cabin, no?

Number None, Sunday, 7 April 2013 20:23 (twelve years ago)

yeah sure, but the film seems occasionally to suggest that all the deadite mayhem may only be in the junkie protagonist's detoxing head, even up to the business w/ "the abomination" at the end, but wind up going somewhere else. which is just as well, cuz a twist like that would have been complete bullshit, but the movie didn't seem to need even the suggestion.

contenderizer, Sunday, 7 April 2013 20:35 (twelve years ago)

This is fantastic, easily the best horror film I've seen since The Descent.

Man, I’m too old for this shit. I can’t tell if I don’t like scary movies anymore or if this one was particularly unpleasant. The first Evil Dead worked because it was ultra low budget but good. The second worked because it was so ridiculous. I’m still not sure if the third one worked. The new one is just relentlessly grim.

Cthulhu Diamond Phillips (Neanderthal), Saturday, 22 April 2023 22:55 (two years ago)

No, I didn’t pick up on anything like that. I’m straight, so maybe there is something I missed. But many of my loved ones, including my daughter are queer and I can usually sniff it out pretty easily. I mean…. without getting spoilery, there are only going to be so many survivors in an Evil Dead movie. The characters that died were all portrayed very sensitively and I don’t recall any crude Deadite pokes against anyone’s sexuality except the main (straight) character being slut-shamed, which ties into the story.

Cow_Art, Saturday, 22 April 2023 23:15 (two years ago)

yeah imo i do not think a horror film is homophobic just bc the gay characters die. some slashers can feel racist or extremely sex negative and misogynistic bc of the characters they target (but in the realm of horror this can double as a metaphor for existing in a world that places the marginalized in constant life-threatening danger) but idk this movie doesn’t feel that careless

i was surprised at how much this shared thematically with m3gan re: not wanting to be a parent but ultimately finding yourself in a situation where you have to take care of someone in a world that’s grown gnarled and hostile in your inattention and self-involvement

Did the picture seem incredibly dark and murky to anyone else? I thought my theatre might have botched the projection, but apparently dim and low-contrast cinematography is also a big trend right now.

Yes, I noticed that. There were a couple of moments with bad CGI which I normally don't pick up on. Somebody falls in a bathtub and the splash almost seemed like a CGI placeholder that they forgot to refine. In general I thought the effects were good, but I missed the old prosthetics. It would have been another cool way for this to stand out.

I'm torn on that because as great as the prosthetics are, they fit into the camp tone of those movies very well, and this one, while definitely funny at times, isn't really going for that. otoh, the prosthetics weirdly keep the movie grounded somewhat, whereas CGI demon films often get off on utilizing every visual trick possible and it becomes like what people derisively called "wire-fu" in the HK scene, where the physical transformations and feats of strength are too much and OTT.

unrelated but did anybody think possessed Ash in ED2 looked like a precursor to Butthead from B&B?

i rewatched evil dead (2013) and still think it's one of the more remarkable studio horrors from the beginning of the last decade. gnarly beyond belief, and i love the meta element where it's kind of reversing the character dynamics of the original (e.g. the ash stand-in is the v pathetic brother character). can't believe i forgot about the resurrection scene, which i find very powerful and beautiful and can even work as a metaphor for hitting rock bottom but i also don't even have to think of that!!!
