We have to believe, don't we?
Does anyone think we won't do it? Why?

Pete S, Sunday, 16 November 2003 17:23 (twenty-one years ago)

yes. we'll smash them.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 16 November 2003 17:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, but we won't score a single try.

Madchen (Madchen), Sunday, 16 November 2003 17:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Like magic!

Madchen (Madchen), Sunday, 16 November 2003 17:27 (twenty-one years ago)

We will definitely win if we score a try. We only might win if we don't.

Ed (dali), Sunday, 16 November 2003 17:29 (twenty-one years ago)

we might score one.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 16 November 2003 17:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I think there's a good chance we'ill absolutely squash them - 4 tries to none

Pete S, Sunday, 16 November 2003 17:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe the guarantee is Springbok training techniques! Oh wait...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 16 November 2003 18:02 (twenty-one years ago)

If the footage of that was released on DVD....

Pete S, Sunday, 16 November 2003 18:07 (twenty-one years ago)

you guys won't win whether you score a try or not. the only chance you'll get is if its raining in a slow annoying drizzly way.

gaz (gaz), Sunday, 16 November 2003 21:22 (twenty-one years ago)

We can smell fear Gaz.....And you stink

Pete S, Sunday, 16 November 2003 21:23 (twenty-one years ago)

i say! this is a gentleman's game!

gaz (gaz), Sunday, 16 November 2003 21:27 (twenty-one years ago)

A gentlemen's game? No that's the other one - the one you always beat us in

Pete S, Sunday, 16 November 2003 21:33 (twenty-one years ago)

which one? we beat you in everything but soccer!

gaz (gaz), Sunday, 16 November 2003 21:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Uh-huh, which is why next saturday's gonna be so sweet. It'll be like the rebels overthrowing the Empire, or something. Good-will will break out amongst all nations, babies will smile, and flowers will spring from the earth, like at the end of South Park the Movie. And then that'll leave cricket and beach volleyball.....

Pete S, Sunday, 16 November 2003 21:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I really can't bear England to win this, sorry English ILXors, I thought I wouldn't mind but all the smugness is just too much. I HOPE ENGLAND LOSE HEAVILY. And I want a framed pic of Woodwards shiny fucking face when they do.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 16 November 2003 22:43 (twenty-one years ago)

yay ronan is an honorary australian for the day

the surface noise (electricsound), Sunday, 16 November 2003 22:51 (twenty-one years ago)

As someone on the radio said today, 'the English made the Australians the Irish of the south pacific'. (the article was about Pom-hating and how it was just payback for eons etc.)

Ed (dali), Sunday, 16 November 2003 22:56 (twenty-one years ago)

we smell aussie blood.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 16 November 2003 23:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Everyone said NZ would beat us easily in the finals, and they didn't. Ha! So just watcher backs guys. ;)

Trayce (trayce), Sunday, 16 November 2003 23:41 (twenty-one years ago)

but NZ are not v experienced. we are :-)

its abt time we've had a bit of success. especially after all those beatings at cricket.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 16 November 2003 23:44 (twenty-one years ago)

"The Irish of the South Pacific"? What you mean plucky under-dogs without a hope? I wouldn't have said that.
Anyway, racially speaking the Australians ARE the Irish of the South Pacific. Duh!

Pete S, Sunday, 16 November 2003 23:48 (twenty-one years ago)

we smell aussie blood

*doomy piano, slow groaning handclaps [if you will]*

Are you Cockbain?
Are you Croft?
Are you all called Bruce?
Are you Grey?
Are you Paul?
Are you all Foster's drinkers?
We smell Aussie blood
Are you fracturing?
Are you torn at the seams?
Would you do anything?
Fleabitten motheaten?

Erm. *hides*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 16 November 2003 23:49 (twenty-one years ago)

In sport, as in music, the Poms invent it, then the Aussies beat them at it.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Sunday, 16 November 2003 23:50 (twenty-one years ago)

This explains why the Vines are so brilliant. OH WAIT.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 16 November 2003 23:50 (twenty-one years ago)

you better all hide from Johnny's boot.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 16 November 2003 23:51 (twenty-one years ago)

The Vines are the exception that proves the rule.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Sunday, 16 November 2003 23:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Three words: Machine Gun Fellatio.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 16 November 2003 23:55 (twenty-one years ago)

"In sport, as in music, the poms invent it, then the Aussies beat them at it"
????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Stick to the physical exertions, we'ill manage ART

Now i just hate myself for saying that.

Pete S, Sunday, 16 November 2003 23:55 (twenty-one years ago)

which british band are the Vines copying now?

the surface noise (electricsound), Sunday, 16 November 2003 23:57 (twenty-one years ago)

And what is Ned's stake in all this?

gaz (gaz), Monday, 17 November 2003 00:00 (twenty-one years ago)

And what is Ned's stake in all this?

None, really. I'm just bemused.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 17 November 2003 00:13 (twenty-one years ago)

How come Ned's even heard of Machine Gun Fellatio? That is really embarassing, I thought we'd quarantined them. Oh well, at least he hasn't heard of TISM.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Monday, 17 November 2003 00:29 (twenty-one years ago)

they've been getting some o/s press lately

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 17 November 2003 00:30 (twenty-one years ago)

How shockingly embarassing.

Pete, self-loathing is the lot of the Englishman, just as the celebration of mediocrity is the lot of the Australian. So fulfill your destiny, mate, cos we're fulfiulling ours.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Monday, 17 November 2003 00:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Johnny's boot has destiny written all over it.

Pete S, Monday, 17 November 2003 00:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Pete, you're a natural sports commentator.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Monday, 17 November 2003 00:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I hope they show HG and Roy after the final on ITV......

Pete S, Monday, 17 November 2003 01:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh well, at least he hasn't heard of TISM.

Haha! I've known about them for almost fifteen years now...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 17 November 2003 01:12 (twenty-one years ago)

roy & hg, tism...all our secrets are belong to you!

gaz (gaz), Monday, 17 November 2003 01:18 (twenty-one years ago)

ned has even heard of several australian indiepop outfits. he will soon take over.

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 17 November 2003 01:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned knows everything about crap Aust music - remember how he wanted a copy of Pig's Arse? It's like a weird perversion or something. Are you Canadian Ned?

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Monday, 17 November 2003 01:19 (twenty-one years ago)

where is pigs arse jim?

gaz (gaz), Monday, 17 November 2003 01:20 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah jim, where's pig's f***in' arse?

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Monday, 17 November 2003 01:22 (twenty-one years ago)

on my hard drive, still. it's gonna hafta be a double CDR i think. oh and i got the Venetians track this weekend.

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 17 November 2003 01:22 (twenty-one years ago)

sweet mate. i'll be needing it for the post final celebrations.

gaz (gaz), Monday, 17 November 2003 01:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Are you Canadian Ned?

I cannot be mistaken for such.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 17 November 2003 01:24 (twenty-one years ago)

good luck gaz.

Ned, please explain your fine-grained awareness of crap Aust music.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Monday, 17 November 2003 01:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Reading random reviews of Andrew Mueller in the early nineties and actually visiting Melbourne last year and seeing billboards for Machine Gun Fellatio everywhere did not hurt. (I still want that CDR comp of whatever you fellers are planning.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 17 November 2003 01:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Are you guys trying to turn this into the Pseudo Echo thread mk II or sommat? ;P

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 17 November 2003 02:25 (twenty-one years ago)

wahey

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 17 November 2003 02:27 (twenty-one years ago)

It's all we know, Trayce.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Monday, 17 November 2003 02:44 (twenty-one years ago)

shall we start a pseudo echo thread you know where guys?

gaz (gaz), Monday, 17 November 2003 02:50 (twenty-one years ago)

on mono?

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 17 November 2003 02:51 (twenty-one years ago)

heh heh

gaz (gaz), Monday, 17 November 2003 02:52 (twenty-one years ago)

You boys are EVIL.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 17 November 2003 03:01 (twenty-one years ago)

You realise mind you, that on the strength of this thread alone, Australia's won, cos the UKians appear to have all sodded off. Well, except Ned.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 17 November 2003 03:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Who isnt even a UKian, wtf am I on today.

I'll get me coat.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 17 November 2003 03:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm an honorary everything in this thread, it seems!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 17 November 2003 03:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Everyone sods off, leaving just the Australians and Raggett. Well, you could knock me down with a feather.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Monday, 17 November 2003 03:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Pseudo mono thread is go.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Monday, 17 November 2003 03:42 (twenty-one years ago)

NO STAYING POWER, THOSE POMS

TROUGHMAN (gaz), Monday, 17 November 2003 03:43 (twenty-one years ago)

http://mono.net/discussion_sub.asp?f=10450

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 17 November 2003 03:43 (twenty-one years ago)

fuck me dead and call me gunny!

gaz (gaz), Monday, 17 November 2003 03:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh. Dear.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 17 November 2003 03:47 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry Trayce, i thought you'd gone. i'm not really like that.

gaz (gaz), Monday, 17 November 2003 03:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Hahah actually the Oh Dear was aimed at Jim ;) But hey...

wtf is a gunny anyway? Or dont I want to know...

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 17 November 2003 04:35 (twenty-one years ago)

um, no. best not.

gaz (gaz), Monday, 17 November 2003 04:41 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm expecting Australia to win as I did France, it seems to work

stevem (blueski), Monday, 17 November 2003 10:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I managed to watch the whole game instead of flicking channels like I did with the Wales game, mind you I was still watching "them" and not "us"

chris (chris), Monday, 17 November 2003 10:10 (twenty-one years ago)

i think the reason there wer no UK ppl left on the thread was because it was THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT, silly aussies.

as mypete pointed out, it was somewhat unfortunate that a lot of ppls possible first taste of rugby had to be yesterday morning, as it hardly showed the most watchable side of the game (not that it wasn't great, but y'know...)

also it was a shame michalek went to pieces (sort of).

i so want US to win.

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 17 November 2003 10:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I really can't bear England to win this, sorry English ILXors, I thought I wouldn't mind but all the smugness is just too much.

Relax Ronan, it's only the Rugby World Cup, it's not like anyone gives a shit. If the England football team were in a comparative position, or if Timmy was in the final at Wimbledon, there'd be nationwide hysteria by this point.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 17 November 2003 10:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I agree with Ronan, but if some of the Aussies I saw around London on Saturday morning were anything to go by, we're set up for an unpleasant smugfest whichever side wins the ugliest team game on the planet.

Tim (Tim), Monday, 17 November 2003 10:50 (twenty-one years ago)

yes, perspective here. no-one can match the Aussies when it comes to smugness, esp. over beating England

stevem (blueski), Monday, 17 November 2003 11:07 (twenty-one years ago)

If it wasn't for the fact that we're playing the Aussies next week, I don't think I'd particularly care that much who won it.

chris (chris), Monday, 17 November 2003 11:08 (twenty-one years ago)

the French can console themselves with the fact that were they to play England at football right now they'd be far more likely to win outright (i notice they did another fine demolition job in Germany this past weekend)

stevem (blueski), Monday, 17 November 2003 11:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Perhaps Ronan doesn't have to put up with tens of thousands of Australians taking his jobs and shagging his women :) I agree, they're the smuggest of the smug. I disagree that Englanders are just as bad - we're so amazed when we win something that there's dancing in the streets etc., yes, but smug, no, I don't think so.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 17 November 2003 11:21 (twenty-one years ago)

England rugby fans have been unbearably smug over the past few years, Barry.

Tim (Tim), Monday, 17 November 2003 11:22 (twenty-one years ago)

they certainly have, witness the ba$stards I had to put up with ion the train the other day.

I seem to remember discussing theis very point on Saturday, but it's all a bit of a haze

chris (chris), Monday, 17 November 2003 11:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Everyone is smug when they're winning, and everyone else hates them for it. It's the way of the world.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 17 November 2003 11:48 (twenty-one years ago)

he said smugly

stevem (blueski), Monday, 17 November 2003 11:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Hi, I'm Romanian, I'm not smug

Caeucescu, Monday, 17 November 2003 12:01 (twenty-one years ago)

A very refreshing nap. Seems this board has descended into smug-wars.
Australians accusing the English of being smug is typical Aussie tactics of getting personal when the heat is starting to singe their backsides. Next they'll be cussing our mums.
I'd like to reassure all our Antipodean cousins that we have far too much colonial guilt to be smug, so you have nothing to worry about.
We'ill tease a bit and then retreat.

Pete S, Monday, 17 November 2003 12:06 (twenty-one years ago)

What time is it in Australia? Spring?

Pete S, Monday, 17 November 2003 16:05 (twenty-one years ago)

It's not just the managers or the commentators or the fans with the England team either though, it's the players too! Dallaglio, JOHNSON, god I despise them. Over here people constantly want England to lose in any sport and it bores me a bit, especially in soccer where I want them to win if Ireland are out, but rugby is different. The likes of Will Carling were on TV before a ball was kicked going through the English team and saying "he's the best in the world in his position" about every single player.

At the start I really did want England to win, cos the Southern Hemisphere teams are completely smug aswell, but I can't handle the TV coverage anymore.

I think rugby is a great sport, I maintain that, I'm not sure about the World Cup as a tournament though, the Heineken Cup or the Six Nations tend to be more entertaining. Possibly because Ireland do better and have a winning chance but also because there's more competition and more surprise.

I can only hope the old "shoot ourselves in the foot by hyping our chances to oblivion" trend continues for England. I have visions of them winning and Woodward and Dallaglio snorting coke off prostitutes and guffawing while Johnson whips them with a wet towel.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 17 November 2003 16:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Was that Ronan whining?

(;) obv)

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 17 November 2003 16:36 (twenty-one years ago)

you flaming galah

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 17 November 2003 16:38 (twenty-one years ago)

It was Ronan being OTM

chris (chris), Monday, 17 November 2003 16:42 (twenty-one years ago)

i must admit it's gonna be really tiresome this week with Jim Rosenthal and co. all piping in unison 'can England do it? will the mouths of Avalonian babes cry sweet tears of victory this Sabbath? can they at least score a try?'

stevem (blueski), Monday, 17 November 2003 16:42 (twenty-one years ago)

eyes not mouths

stevem (blueski), Monday, 17 November 2003 16:42 (twenty-one years ago)

My favourite Jim Rosenthal moment was when he covered the Monaco Grand Prix a few years back. Presumably he jumped at the idea to have him standing on a yacht, champagne in hand, yammering on about the race with an azure blue sky behind him. However on the day it was pissing rain and there was a massive storm, and they cut to "Jim on the ITV yacht" wearing a red raincoat and looking grey and haggard like he'd been puking all morning as the yacht bounced up and down yo-yo style.

I will think of that image should he be smug this week.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 17 November 2003 16:45 (twenty-one years ago)

ITV can't cover sport. so what's new? I don't really watch any of the coverage, just the games.

There isn't much surprise in the Six nations. Same with the world cup. Lots of one sided matches in that first round, with the QF going to plan too.

And england haven't been that smug surely and they haven't crushed every opponent (just solid 2nd half performances).

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 17 November 2003 17:12 (twenty-one years ago)

o lord its hard to be humble etc etc

yeah pete its late spring. we've hit a bit of wet weather though, after a 36C saturday (be thankful your team didn't have to play then)

i'm actually a wee bit ambivalent about the whole thing as i'm norf lahndan born and bred but live here now. i'm edging towards the aussies i think, but if anyone watching it with me gets too smug i'm switching.

gaz (gaz), Monday, 17 November 2003 21:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeh it was the weather wot did it. See! there's always something! When Australia win it's because "they're the best sporting nation in the world". But an England team that's beaten S.Africa, a spectacular Wales and France "lucked out".
(Breathe out)

Pete S, Monday, 17 November 2003 22:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Can i just congratulate all Aussies on Robert Hughes, surely your greatest gift to the world. Last night's prog on BBC2 on Speer was marvellous.

Pete S, Tuesday, 18 November 2003 14:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Julio nobody said ITV cover sport badly, it was what is known as an anecdote. Also the 6 nations has been going on for longer than the last 2-3 years.

Anyway you've no idea what you're talking about so I'll go back to reasons to dislike England.

Will Carling.

Past instances of cheating.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 20:36 (twenty-one years ago)

DOWIE MORRIS. I'd almost forgotten him.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 20:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Does anyone else think Jim Rosenthal's eyes have been getting smaller and beadier of late?

Madchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 20:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Jim Rosenthal looks like Lucifer. He should grow the classic villain moustache and goatee.
They should have Matt Smith doing it. He's the best ITV sports presenter. I'll never forget his "Up the Duff?" comment to a pregnant Blackburn fan on the old Premiership Parliament show.

Pete S, Tuesday, 18 November 2003 20:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I have to believe they won't win.

I've been lucky in that England have never won anything much of note in my lifetime, but I can see them winning this.

Jim Rosenthal does look a bit like The Count.

Ally C (Ally C), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 20:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I will keep shaming you by supporting Scotland whenever they play, Ally C (except when they play England, but that's natural, innit?)

Madchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 20:54 (twenty-one years ago)

You Aussies should face it; you've become the arrogant unbearable sporting nation England used to be 50 years ago.

Pete S, Tuesday, 18 November 2003 20:56 (twenty-one years ago)

hey, no prob Pete! We'll still win though!

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 21:25 (twenty-one years ago)

No they're clearing the bugs gaz.......I heard them say that earlier.

Pete S, Tuesday, 18 November 2003 21:40 (twenty-one years ago)

whaaaaat?

btw: Robt Hughes, there's smug for you.

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 21:52 (twenty-one years ago)

The Private Eye Diary column on Hughes was OTM.

Incidentally Woodward gave a press-conference earlier to tell the media that they were scouring the England camp for bugging devices.
I'm implying that's the only way you could win...............

(sigh) jokes are rubbish when you explain them........

Pete S, Tuesday, 18 November 2003 21:59 (twenty-one years ago)

"You Aussies should face it; you've become the arrogant unbearable sporting nation England used to be 50 years ago."

Important differences:

If the Aussies win it they will be smug because it will reinforce their (more or less deserved) perception of themselves as a great sporting nation.

If England win it they will be smug because it will represent, however briefly, a return to the perceived natural order of things, top nation again, being born English winning first prize in the lottery of life, yadda yadda. This is an uber smugness that historically took many forms, including encouraging small colonised countries to play your favourite sport, beating them, and calling yourself World Champions. Very Victorian Dad, and how very upsetting when the little blighters turn round and start thumping you.

An Aussie win would be easily the most bearable, although I don't think they will do it this time.

ArfArf, Tuesday, 18 November 2003 22:04 (twenty-one years ago)

back int old days it were just the game and a wee bit of sledging.

now its press conferences slandering the other team and stuff. i don't know whether to look at the back pages of the paper or just dig myself a media free bunker for the week.

and yeeeeah for the revenge of the colonised

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 22:06 (twenty-one years ago)

haha Ronan I can't wait to get all 'smug' on you.

but yeah if eng win then all the tabloids will go ape shit and so on but so what? i don't read 'em. I hardly watch or read the coverage its been getting. if it affects ya then you shouldn't either.

But england have played some really good rugby and I think they honestly deserve it (and i wasn't even born in england even though I've lived here for a long time now).

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 22:14 (twenty-one years ago)

You lads are so wrong.
Obviously if you're OBSESSED with sport and eugenically breed whole generations to be perfect sporting machines without educating them properly in the civillized arts then you're going to become the best, aren't you?
If you have no culture/literature/philosophy/poetry/music/history/scientific tradition/etc. you have nothing to impede that atavistic joyless pursuit of sprting excellence.

I'd rather be English with all my cherished experiences of LOSING competions - with good grace, with heart and spirit - than a puritan Aussie. YOU believe it's the natural order of things for you to be on top. You barely celebrate victory anymore. You'r all spoilt.

You deserve a good kicking on saturday, And believe me, THE WHOLE WORLD WILL BE PLEASED TO SEE THAT HAPPEN.

(Breathe out)

Pete S, Tuesday, 18 November 2003 22:17 (twenty-one years ago)

nah pete...its only a game.

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 22:23 (twenty-one years ago)

life is a game too gaz.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 22:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry gaz....that was mainly directed at ArfArf.

Pete S, Tuesday, 18 November 2003 22:26 (twenty-one years ago)

heh. my local high school has just introduced Rugby League as a subject at Higher School Certificate level (A- level ).

i mean...wtf? Sport, majoring in Rugby maybe. But as a whole subject??? Can you do Soccer over there? Or Cricket?

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 22:29 (twenty-one years ago)

i can't believe i live in a "great sporting nation"

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 22:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Not as far as i'm aware.

A scary echo of my post, though eh?

Pete S, Tuesday, 18 November 2003 22:31 (twenty-one years ago)

no pete! we are working to educate our sportsmen!

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 22:32 (twenty-one years ago)

there's no such thing as really good rugby, unless you're talking league of course.

I've still not changed my mind that it'll be them that win, and not us.

chris (chris), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 22:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Do you get Neighbours over there?

Patrick Kinghorn, Tuesday, 18 November 2003 22:35 (twenty-one years ago)

no, it is export quality only

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 22:47 (twenty-one years ago)

In Australia you mean?

Ally C (Ally C), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 22:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Uh-huh

Patrick Kinghorn, Tuesday, 18 November 2003 22:49 (twenty-one years ago)

it is too rich and expensive for us. we make do with reruns of prisoner and local versions of o/s reality tv shows.

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 22:49 (twenty-one years ago)

gaz, do you think there'll be a wave of suicides if England do win?
Not because people care that much but just because the pressure is so great that people will literally not be able to face this new, Unknown future.

Pete S, Tuesday, 18 November 2003 22:53 (twenty-one years ago)

no suicides but maybe a few partners will get beaten

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 22:54 (twenty-one years ago)

ha! its like the conundrum: why do people care that there are messages in heavy metal albums telling adolescent metal fans to off themselves.

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 22:56 (twenty-one years ago)

surface: OTM!!!!!!

Patrick Kinghorn, Tuesday, 18 November 2003 22:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Can I be the only born and bred Australian alive to say that I sincerely hope England wins? I am so fucking sick of the sporting obsession in this nation and it would do Australia a lot of good to start losing. People might then find something more interesting to watch and talk about. We may be sporting champions, but it's no bloody wonder we're not any kind of cultural champion.

An Australian, Wednesday, 19 November 2003 09:47 (twenty-one years ago)

What this thread needs more than anything right now is a hundred random Aussie Googlers.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 09:50 (twenty-one years ago)

We may be sporting champions, but it's no bloody wonder we're not any kind of cultural champion
i await the next cultural opympics with some anticipation. i predict australia will get but a few golds compared to those countries for whom culture has become a prime industry.

gaz (gaz), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 10:27 (twenty-one years ago)

What about the limp-wristed pontification and gratuitous philosophy quoting events? (These will be won by Great Britain obviously, with gold going to Olympic Champion Momus).

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 10:30 (twenty-one years ago)

i dunno Matt. the french are looking pretty good there and it could be tight.

gaz (gaz), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 10:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Rugby league is so diluted.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 10:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Gaz, what exactly will we win gold medals for in the cultural olympics? If there's a "boring novels about Australian identity" category, or perhaps a "movies that use Abba on the soundtrack" category, we might just win those I suppose.

An Australian, Wednesday, 19 November 2003 10:40 (twenty-one years ago)

yes. also 30 something female arse. thats maybe about it.

gaz (gaz), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 10:43 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe, but those aren't the important events in competitive culure, are they?. we might get a medal for 30 something female arse. thats maybe about it.

gaz (gaz), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 10:44 (twenty-one years ago)

oops!

gaz (gaz), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 10:45 (twenty-one years ago)

C'mon gaz, give us yet another post about thirtysomething female arse, just to prove how culchererd we Aussies really are!

An Australian, Wednesday, 19 November 2003 10:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Are you referring to this? http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/

Daniel (dancity), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 10:49 (twenty-one years ago)

mmmm

gaz (gaz), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 10:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd like to see USA v Germany in the final of the Cultural Olympics.
France will flake out in the semis.

Pete S, Wednesday, 19 November 2003 12:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Enough of this "you Australians", "you English" rubbish. This here English girl will be happy, not smug, happy if England wins. And a bit miserable if they lose. Simple as that.

Madchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 13:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I wish I had an arse like Kylie's though.

Madchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 13:23 (twenty-one years ago)

i have been asked twice today at work why i'm not wearing green and gold...aren't i patriotic?

gaz (gaz), Friday, 21 November 2003 04:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey forget that, where's your 'Stop Jonny' t-shirt?

Pete S, Friday, 21 November 2003 12:58 (twenty-one years ago)

nope, if it clashes with Soccer AM I ain't watching it

chris (chris), Friday, 21 November 2003 12:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I shall be on the train to the frozen North of England on my way to see a non-league football match. I bet somebody brings a radio, but I'll do my best to avoid the whole thing.

Tim (Tim), Friday, 21 November 2003 13:00 (twenty-one years ago)

thats sad Pete though, eh? you're building your hopes on winning but not scoring tries.

gaz (gaz), Friday, 21 November 2003 13:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I've no doubt whatsoever that you/your nation will impress on us how sad it is after the game.

Pete S, Friday, 21 November 2003 13:06 (twenty-one years ago)

heh.
*puts on bold brave face* WE BEAT NEW ZEALAND. WE CAN BEAT ANYONE.

gaz (gaz), Friday, 21 November 2003 13:08 (twenty-one years ago)

anyway, as i said i'm a bit torn here. when people criticised me for "not being patriotic" i told'em i was born in london. and to be honest i don't even understand the rules.

you gonna be online for a halftime slanging match Pete?

gaz (gaz), Friday, 21 November 2003 13:15 (twenty-one years ago)

What does that show? New Zealand haven't been world champs since 1987? It's commomly agreed their forwards are sub-standard.
Unless you mean you're so bad it's encouraging to see you beat the all-blacks.

Pete S, Friday, 21 November 2003 13:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes.

Pete S, Friday, 21 November 2003 13:18 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost: cut the hot air Pete, tell us what you really feel.

and yes = good.

gaz (gaz), Friday, 21 November 2003 13:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyone else noticed Gaz is being really sweet about this?

Markelby (Mark C), Saturday, 22 November 2003 00:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes indeed! I might be online around halftime. I'll be hoping England win, but it doesn't matter a hundredth as much to me as when it's football.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 22 November 2003 00:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I shall be watching it in my sitting room on my flatmate's widescreen TV with Madchen and Ally C, if any or all of us wake up in time. I've really enjoyed the rugby WC, not least because my best mate is an avid Wales fan who hails from a long line of Welsh internationals, and for three weekends in a row I was round there with him and 8 or 9 members of his immediate family. Including the game against Italy, which was, um, intimidating.

Markelby (Mark C), Saturday, 22 November 2003 00:13 (twenty-one years ago)

not long to go. i might get drunk! then we'll see who's sweet.

Pete S, Saturday, 22 November 2003 09:57 (twenty-one years ago)

pissing down and still a try, boring, pah.

Ed (dali), Saturday, 22 November 2003 10:01 (twenty-one years ago)

the surface noise (electricsound), Saturday, 22 November 2003 10:07 (twenty-one years ago)

When we got up this morning it was 9-5 to England - I had to explain to rugby-hater mr ailsa that this meant that Australia had scored a try and that Jonny Wilkinson had done his stupid kicking a lot. This, I explained, is how rugby goes. Teams play well, get lots of possession, then Jonny Wilkinson kicks hundreds of points. That's how England win, I said. They don't score tries, I said, they just kick lots.

He's gone to work now, I'm going to have to come up with a theory about how they only score tries if they really really have to.

it's only the Rugby World Cup, it's not like anyone gives a shit. If the England football team were in a comparative position, or if Timmy was in the final at Wimbledon, there'd be nationwide hysteria by this point

Yes, but if they win it, prepare for a revision of the last few weeks' general meh-ness towards rugby as the English media suddenly realised their boys actually won something. Like when they got all excited about curling last year.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 22 November 2003 10:09 (twenty-one years ago)

(conveniently remembering that Scotland was part of Britain, like they had forgotten during the Alain Baxter debacle. He's Scottish, the curlers were British) *polishes chip on shoulder*

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 22 November 2003 10:11 (twenty-one years ago)

its a faaackin classic! i hope i have beer to last! extra time!

gaz (gaz), Saturday, 22 November 2003 10:54 (twenty-one years ago)

toby (tsg20), Saturday, 22 November 2003 11:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Gosh, that was quite exciting.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Saturday, 22 November 2003 11:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Blimey. That was far too tense for my poor old nerves.

Ricardo (RickyT), Saturday, 22 November 2003 11:28 (twenty-one years ago)

so the answer is yes.

Ed (dali), Saturday, 22 November 2003 11:32 (twenty-one years ago)

gaz (gaz), Saturday, 22 November 2003 11:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Pete S, Saturday, 22 November 2003 11:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah!

Now;back to bed.

Pete S, Saturday, 22 November 2003 11:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Alain Baxter was good on Superstars, though (and therefore British).

Markelby (Mark C), Saturday, 22 November 2003 11:58 (twenty-one years ago)

ah, that's better, blimey, i don't fancy going through that again...

NB to all english sporting teams, get someone called cohen in, it seems to be the way forward...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Saturday, 22 November 2003 12:07 (twenty-one years ago)

say what you like about the australian rugby team, but they certainly look like real australians. check out those faces! those haircuts! those names! these are some real hardcore aussies, just like they used to make 'em. look at Bill Young! Fantastic! look at his hair! Matt Rogers, best face in the world? the man looks like he's part of Fagin's artful crew of pickpockets, the crafty blighter. look at Larkham, glory in the australianess of his name, brandan cannon, now thats an aussie looking motherfucker, looks like russell crowe crossed with a bear! this team really restored my faith in the colonies, after it was shaken by new zealands team of hair gelled pretty boys, whats that all about kiwis? get some proper colonials, those guys look like they shower every day!

luke.::., Saturday, 22 November 2003 12:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I am 99 years old.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 22 November 2003 13:23 (twenty-one years ago)

oh my poor voice, my heart hasn't had time to recover yet.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 22 November 2003 13:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyway, we were the better team and I'm glad we won.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 22 November 2003 13:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Yep, all told England deserved the victory, poor handling nearly cost us the match but the English players were just better all round. Every time Robinson got the ball he looked dangerous, Ben Cohen was unlucky with the service he received. I thought Australia were unlucky in the amount of time Stephen Larkham had to spend off, they looked a much more dangerous side with him playing.

Matt (Matt), Saturday, 22 November 2003 13:34 (twenty-one years ago)

poor handling, silly mistakes, that punch that gave australia the opportunity for their only try, and what with our only sporting success coming in on home soil in '66 i really thought australia were gonna win...but overall we spent far more time in their half.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 22 November 2003 13:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh absolutely, in fact if it weren't for two or three particularly egregious mistakes the game would have been over long before full time, which is always the thing when playing Australia at anything, if you don't put your chances away they're going to come right back at you, when that penalty went over in the last minute of normal time I really thought that was it, the momentum was with Australia. Which makes the win all the sweeter.

Matt (Matt), Saturday, 22 November 2003 14:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought another factor was the referee blaming England pretty much every time anything went wrong in the scrum. These things are horribly difficult to police, but given that England were pretty dominant there it seems unlikely that it was always them deliberately fucking it up. And if the ref had seen Johnson being pulled down in the line-out late in normal time, we wouldn't have needed extra time. Still, an exciting and earned victory in the end, so all that will be forgotten.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 22 November 2003 15:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh come on England have a long history of being extremely dirty in the scrum, it's part of their success and that's not even to take anything away really.

It was a great match, nice to see Wilkinson get the winning score in the face of so much bile from the Australian media etc, I won't be watching any coverage and will be avoiding British news for a while.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 22 November 2003 16:05 (twenty-one years ago)

It wasn't about being dirty at all, it was about pulling it down or forcing it up or twisting, none of which are things you want to do when you are well on top.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 22 November 2003 16:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I've watched it about three times now, and it's still sinking in.
What a fantastic game. I said 'Jonny's boot had destiny written all over it' ....!! Magic.

gaz, get on this thread!

katharine (katharine), Saturday, 22 November 2003 19:17 (twenty-one years ago)

there was some sort of game last night?

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Saturday, 22 November 2003 21:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I was particularly pleased it was a Wilkinson drop goal that won it - he'd missed a few kicks before that, which isn't like him, and if England lost I could imagine it haunting him for the rest of his life.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 23 November 2003 00:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Headline in the Mail on Sunday "God really is an Englishman". Makes you want to vomit (more than the MoS already would).

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 23 November 2003 17:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, I take it that Jonny Wilkinson is an absolute shoe-in for Sports Personality of the Year, New Years Honours list, etc etc...

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 23 November 2003 17:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Congratulations England. What a game of rubgy that was. For most of the game Australia looked to be one step behind the Poms and to challenge them right to the end was a credit to the Wallabies.

England have proven themselves to be the best side in World Rugby over the last few years and few Australians would begrudge England their well deserved triumph (well, except for our dictator LJH). The Wallabies were slaughtered in the line outs and your superboot gave the Poms the edge in the kicking stakes as Elton looked a little Flatley.

Thanks to all the English fans who came to the world cup and helped to fill it with colour and voice and enjoy the celebrations but be warned...we'll be back.

regards,

REB

Rik E Boy (Rik E Boy), Monday, 24 November 2003 02:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Soccer AM was great - which meant I missed the drop goal, but I did watch some of the final - best moment = lovely sliding tackle by an Australian which knocked the ball out of the way of a rampaging England player - Bobby Moore would have been proud of that one.

chris (chris), Monday, 24 November 2003 09:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow! Much tension, shouting and 'oh god I can't look' in the Shepherd's Bush flat where we rocked up early in the morning. It took about half an hour just to stop shaking afterwards.

robster (robster), Monday, 24 November 2003 10:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the football-style sliding tackle was by Matt Rogers, Chris.

I suspect that some Australians will begrudge England's victory, you know...
