Not telling, but....

Sometimes I get to drive daddy's 2003 745Li. Nerve-wracking is a gentle way to put it, as it is worth more than my life. I have no idea how to work the electronics so sometimes, seemingly at random, a germanic female voice tells me where I am.

Dancing Queen, Tuesday, 18 November 2003 06:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not telling either, at least with Orpheus.

Palomino is a 1995 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera in a beautiful sort of deep aqua color. It looks classier than it sounds. But Palomino is more Mom's vehicle than mine. I'm just driving it because I'm the only one in the household who drives.

And yes, I did happen to name these vehicles after song names, Orpheus after the David Sylvian song and Palomino after the Duran Duran song. Because I'm just that way, sweeties.

Pancakes For Breakfast! (Dee the Lurker), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 06:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh duh. I just realized that Palomino is actually a 1995 Oldsmobile Eighty-Eight, not a Cutlass Ciera. Hence the reference to the 1988 Duran song. Eh, lame, I know.

Another paranoia-inducing feature of dad's BMW: while parking, these sensors gauge how far I am from hittable objects, triggering 'beeps' that get more rapid the closer I get. By the time I'm a foot or so away I am a shivering mass of nerves. Beep, beep beep, beepbeepbeepbeepbeepbeep! AAAAUUUUGHHH!

still running a d-reg saab 900i. I might put a twin-cam engine into it if I can find one @ a reasonbable price, coz this one has a rattling cam follower which is v annoying. I saw a really nice k-plate 900s combi, w/low pressure turbo, but they wanted 950 quid for it, sigh.

A 95 Ford Escort hatchback. It's a piece of shit and I can't wait to sell it. It's turquoise and has a spoiler. BUT it is a hatchback and back seats fold down so you can fit a ton of stuff (ie guitar amps) in the back.

NA (Nick A.), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 13:08 (twenty-two years ago)

CJ - what's service like on a BMW? Can most garages get parts etc to avoid you being ripped off by main dealers? I hate main dealers. I'm getting a new, well not *new* say 2-3 yrs old, car in the new year and I'm considering a BMW. Nothing mega flash - maybe a 316, 318.

Also on the shortlist - VW Passat or a Bora maybe. Anyone know anything about these good/bad/indifferent.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 13:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I have always had good experiences with modern volkswagens. I'd choose one over the BMW, just because you will get more for your money and the same excellent engineering and build quality.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 13:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Right now I'm tooling around in a '98 Chevy extended cab truck, but I'm sick to fucking death of it, of the half-hour it takes to parallel park it, the way it guzzles gas like Barney Gumble guzzles beer, and especially sick of getting "dude, can you help me move?" phone calls every weekend. I have a 90 Volvo wagon sitting in my driveway which I am working on currently, hopefully to be mobile before January. Rock.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 13:35 (twenty-two years ago)

dr. c, i love my VW. i think the jetta is the same as the bora. but i like the new passats better than the jetta, just because of the shape. mine is a GLX, which is the bigger and faster engine, and it was really worth it. it's a fantastic and fast little car, and it is wonderful. makes me sad that i can't drive it!

colette (a2lette), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 13:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 13:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Dr C - I know what you mean about main dealers being a bit of a rip-off. Although I do use them from time to time, I've been using a local (very small) repair place to get work done my beamers for several years now. The mechanic who owns the business used to work for Rolls Royce and a BMW main dealership, so he knows his stuff. More inportantly, he has that special little gadget thingy for re-setting the computerised service warning on the dashboard :)

I get BMW-compatible parts from 'German and Swedish'. They're good quality, and about half the price.

C J (C J), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 13:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I owned three VW's, a 1983 Quantum turbo diesel...best car I ever owned. A 1990 Jetta, piece of $hit. And the last one was a 1997 Golf GTI, great car but I got a lot of speeding tickets. Tried the past summer to buy a new 2003 Jetta and had no luck... :( The problem with VW's I've found due to past experience is once one thing goes wrong a whole bunch of other things start to go wrong as well. And they cost a small fortune to fix.

Chris B. Sure (Chris V), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 13:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I want to hug you, bnw and DG.

Apologies for the poor quality of the photo, but I was trying to focus in on just one tiny aspect of a large photo I'd taken and scanned in already. Having said that, I introduce you to my vehicle, Orpheus (i.e. a black 1995 Chevy Blazer):

Just explain to me your reason for driving a tank, Dee. And being a Republican isn't good enough.

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 14:53 (twenty-two years ago)

As I don't drive I am hugely clueless/curious about what influences people's choice of vehicle. And I do accept that people should have some choice...

Budget I guess is an obvious factor, but what makes someone who lives on their own in a city buy a 4x4, say? Do people really watch stuff like Top Gear? Do you just please yourself with what you drive, or do you think about the environmental impact? Is it important how fast it goes when your entire journey to work has a 30mph limit? etc

As a pedestrian (and without wanting to revive the earlier acrimonious thread) I have a grrrr reaction when I see shiny SUVs and people carriers with no passengers going through town. But not ALL these drivers can be out and out twats, can they? Is there some great benefit of driving big enormous cars that I am missing?

(xpost sorta)

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 14:59 (twenty-two years ago)

given that I mainly use my car for various camp related activities I prize an estate car and given that charity is paying the fuel bills fuel economy comes second. Reliability is up there.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 15:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Before everyone piles on the truck drivers, keep in mind that not everyone gets a choice in what they drive...all my cars (including the light pickup that I drove in high school) have been hand-me-downs or salvage jobs that wouldn't have sold for more than $1000.

pl@y@ h@t@ (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't really care what kind of car I got, I knew it would be fairly crappy because I didn't have a lot to spend, and my other criteria were an ok stereo and lots of room to move stuff (I'm in bands and need to move amps and such to shows). My dad, who was cosigning the loan, did a lot of research on which used cars were most dependable, so he did the practical part. So my car is ugly, but to be fair, it has run pretty well over the past three years.

Alex K (Alex K), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 15:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I drive a 2000 Ford Focus SE sedan. It truly is a weird car full of squeaks and rattles. I have 130 K on it and haven't had any expensive repairs so I guess I'm lucky compared to lots of other Focus owners. Made the trip to NYC in the summer without incident (the raccoonacide and blown tire couldn't be blamed on the car). One really annoying thing about the car: it won't blow hot air from the heater vents until after I start driving. This is bad in Canada in the winter!

Reasons Why Dee Drives A Chevy Blazer:

1.  She learned to drive on one, so they're the easiest vehicles in the world for her to handle, from the steering to the accelerating.
2.  It came at a really good price and in amazingly good condition for it being a used vehicle. (She bought it in 2000.)
3.  Dude, it's got a CD player in it! She got totally excited over the fact that it had a CD player in it!
4.  She loves the way it looks.
5.  She loves the fact that she can run to a home improvement center and pick up almost anything she'd need without having to rely on one of the relatives with a truck.
6.  She finds the vehicle a very smooth ride.
7.  She loves the fact that the interior is roomy enough to fit her and three other adults comfortably, with room to breathe.
8.  Did she mention that she loves the way it looks?

In short, Dee loves her Blazer. She has no intention of intimidating other drivers out on the road with this vehicle, and doesn't even really think she does, as there are many other, often larger SUVs out there on the road, so it's not like she's alone out there.

Pancakes For Breakfast! (Dee the Lurker), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:38 (twenty-two years ago)

What about the fuel economy it must be terrible. I can get four adults in my much more modest car and probably go twice to three times as far on the same litre of fuel.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:40 (twenty-two years ago)

teeny, I think it's amazing you guys also have a 1995 Oldsmobile Eighty-Eight!! OMG, what a coincidence. And no, we don't have a 2000 Nader/LaDuke bumper sticker in the back (*winks*). We don't have any bumper stickers on any of our vehicles -- never have. Dad disapproved of any similar ornamentation. But I suspect that had he, the political bumper sticker that would've won by popular vote in the household in 2000 would've been one for Al Gore. Mom and Dad both being die-hard Democrats, obviously.

Pancakes For Breakfast! (Dee the Lurker), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:41 (twenty-two years ago)

i used to get 40 mpg in my diesel.

Chris B. Sure (Chris V), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm glad no-one drives a tt. I think they're really naff.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

And Ed, I really don't travel far enough to make fuel economy too much of an issue. I probably drive enough throughout the week to use up maybe 10 gallons of gas a week, because I live close enough to work and school to where I don't rack up too much mileage there. All the lengthier journeys happen when I have to drive my mom places, and during those occasions I drive the Oldsmobile, because Mom can't get into the Blazer. So it all works out in the end. Besides, I drive slower than most of the other vehicles out there on the road, and driving at slower speeds usually ends up saving gas in the end, so ta-daaaa.

Pancakes For Breakfast! (Dee the Lurker), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:44 (twenty-two years ago)

My experience of SUvs is the awful Range Rover my dad drove for a couple of years, it used to get about 12 mpg (UK gal)

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Just fyi: I don't see the point in a Hummer. I've seen those things out on the road and they're ENORMOUS. I mean, gargantuan. They don't look as though they could fit into any of the parking spaces at the places I go to. Why drive something that big when it's not even a truck? My Blazer is actually rather small compared to most SUVs out there, so it looks like a tiny compact vehicle in comparison to a Hummer.

Pancakes For Breakfast! (Dee the Lurker), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I would estimate that Orpheus gets approximately 20 mpg, keeping in mind the amount of gas I put into it a week and the average distance I drive within that week. Yeah, that sounds about right.

Pancakes For Breakfast! (Dee the Lurker), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:47 (twenty-two years ago)

But if you did the same journey in my car you'd be using two thirds less fuel, wasting two thirds fewer resources, putting out two thirds the emissions and paying two thirds less on fuel.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:48 (twenty-two years ago)

based on that economy it's not quite 2/3s I get mid 50s mpg (UK gal) But I only use the car on long runs so I've no idea what the urban economy is like.

Chris B. Sure (Chris V), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not putting a blanket yeah on european car design then I'd have to love things like the austin princess or the vauxhall chevette. But in general there are very few high points of Japanese or US car design. With japanese cars the high points are technical with american cars the high points aren't really there.

Chris B. Sure (Chris V), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:59 (twenty-two years ago)

i think it was just an '80's renault hatchback, i forget the model. We used to have a citroen "van blanc") (white van w/stencilled wine bottle graphic, yuo could also get a "van rouge")

I nearly bought a p6 v8 years ago, but got a wolseley 1100 (read; money pit) instead. I've been wary of classic cars ever since, though it was loveley to drive b/c of its hydraulic suspension.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 18:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm guessing the UK equivalent was Le'Shitbox.

Chris B. Sure (Chris V), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 18:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I had a renault Megane hire car this summer with a turbo diesel engine and a 6 speed gear box, it was absolutely marvelous. Very quick, lovely to drive and 27/28 km per litre.

That's a renault 5 van, it looks ridiculous.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 18:01 (twenty-two years ago)

My dad had a few obscure european cars back in the day, a Fiat, Peugot, Alfa Romeo, Renault. Don't see many of these around in the US these days.

Chris B. Sure (Chris V), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 18:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Most don't export to the US, of course Renault own Nissan so you get their engines. (Renault diesels especially good).

ed is right about american cars. uniformly mediocre to well below mediocre.

it's their large (ie 3.5 litre engined) model, the "vel satis". Loveley interior as well. It has sank like a stone in the uk. Someone up the road from us has one, and it looks really nice.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 18:09 (twenty-two years ago)

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 18:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Renault have be best track record in Europe for creating or popularising new shapes in the car industry but the MPV coupé doesn't seem to have gone down that well in Britain. (It's all over France and Italy though).

Chris, hell yes although Fiat (owner of Alpha and Lancia as wel) is going down the Pan and may be bought by GM which will lead to a blanding out of their cars (as happened to SAAB as I'm sure Pashmina will attest to). Puegeot are still going making very boring cars they own Citroën which they have succeeded in stifling almost all innovation from. Renault, VW and Daimler Crysler are the Collossi of the European Car manufacturers (Ford and GM are very important but obv not European owned).

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 18:26 (twenty-two years ago)

The VW Touareg is the anti VW, it was co-developed with Porsche (not unusual ) but its the anti-VW i tell you.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 18:27 (twenty-two years ago)

oh yes VW and Daimler Chrysler I assumed were still going strong. The others I just assumed died.

Really Bryan, I just heard that the Toureg was rated #1?

Chris B. Sure (Chris V), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 18:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Problem with it was the steering (overlight and numb) and the lack of power even with the V8. The new Cadillac SRX won over the Porsche by a good margin. This after the same mag named the Touareg their truck of the year. Here is the article.

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 18:36 (twenty-two years ago)

The Touareg and the Chayenne are the same car. SUVs are the most pointless type of car ever. If you needed an off road vehicle you'd get a proper off roader like a Land Rover or and Land Cruiser, none of this poncey knob arse crap.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 18:38 (twenty-two years ago)

SUVs are as bad if not worse than caravans.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 18:39 (twenty-two years ago)

actually, oops, i'm only leasing it. I figure, when the lease is up, i should hope to God be in a job where i can actually afford to buy a car outright. Hopefully, they'll have the Pontiacs back up to specs, then.

Jeremy the Kingfish (Kingfish), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 18:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, thats good to know. My sisters bf sells VW's and of course he would try to sell you dog shit if he could. Trying to screw his future borother in law over. Bastard. Oh well, he gave me an iPod for free.

There really is no need for an SUV, unless you live somewhere it snows all the time. I see no need for one in anyplace other than Alaska. I'll stick to a sedan when the time comes.

Chris B. Sure (Chris V), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 18:40 (twenty-two years ago)

JuliaA (j_bdules), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 18:45 (twenty-two years ago)

The Touareg and the Chayenne are the same car.

They're sort of the same car. They're both supposedly quite good off-road from what I've read, not like the BWM X5 or that Cadillac in the comparo. If I was going to be doing very much off-roading I'd get myself a '73 Comet. They're really great for mud boggin' anyway.

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 18:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I friend had one cobbled together from various less fortunate vehicles (series 2 body, series 3 chassis, defender engine, range rover front box and axle). Great car for an Archaeologist.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 18:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I also like that new Honda thing. You can hose down the inside!

Chris B. Sure (Chris V), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 18:47 (twenty-two years ago)

The Touareg and Cheyenne were designed together and share a chassis, and suspension and 1 engine (a diesel probably only available in Europe, Porsche don't make diesels). They'll be set up differently and differently specced but they are the same car.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 18:48 (twenty-two years ago)

In this case the engines and the steering make the difference. I like the look of the VW interior better myself, especially the steering wheel.

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 18:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Whats the price gap between the Touareg and the Cheyanne, 30 g's?

Chris B. Sure (Chris V), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 18:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Why is that, you pay for name? The Audi and the VW are essentially the same car. Jetta v. A-4, Passat V. A-6. Yet the price is significantly higher on the Audi. Same with Nissan and Infiniti. BS.

Chris B. Sure (Chris V), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 18:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Are they actually calling it the Cheyanne and not the Cayenne in Europe? Trying to macho it up?

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 18:52 (twenty-two years ago)

they should name it the Porsche Pepper.

Chris B. Sure (Chris V), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 18:54 (twenty-two years ago)

A4, A6 and Passat share a platform

Jetta, Golf, A3 and TT share a platform

the VW group have only aim to have only 4 platforms on the go at any one time for all their cars. Platform is not the same as chassis. Toareg and Cheyene are more closely related that the A4 and A6.

Not sure of the spelling of the name.

Chris B. Sure (Chris V), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 18:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't worry, Ed. Soon SUVs will be horribly uncool---they will become the new minivan. They're popularity can only last so long, right? I hope so.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 18:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Chris B. Sure (Chris V), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 19:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I will resist as far as I can, and will only compromise as far as a Subaru Forrester, which is not really an SUV anyway.

Station wagons (estates, kombis, whatever) rock, yet my wife has been manipulated by marketing to believe that they are a tool of the man to keep woman down, whereas the SUV is the vehicle of freedom and independence. I say, which one of us is the American again?

Colin Meeder (Mert), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 19:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I am a confirmed estate/variant driver. I see no reason to change (apart from from for a Fiat Multipla or Renault Megane/Vel satis/Avantime which defy trad classification)

Wow Ed, you sound like one of those people that gently chides me for wearing impractical suede shoes and then goes off about how your runners 'are available in C-width too!" I'm not a fan of SUVs either but I don't really care either way. Below is a somewhat funny Vice satire on the growing trend of SUV scapegoating.

"Fucking rich people. They’re bastards! They think the planet is here for their amusement. From the rich-ass snobs in Britain hunting foxes like it’s a video game to the greedy Americans in their gas-guzzling SUVs, rich people are sending this whole planet straight to fucking hell. How can we wake them up to the fact that they are destroying the planet? Isn’t anyone getting off their asses and doing something about this!?

You bet your ass they are. On Aug. 22, a group affiliated with the Earth Liberation Front decided to take their rage to the streets and blew up a Hummer dealership in West Covina, CA. They spraypainted “Fat, lazy Americans” on the outside of the building just in case you didn’t get it, and then BOOM the shit was torched. God bless them. It’s time the world knew the truth. Rich people and their cars are destroying the planet.

“Er, actually, the problem isn’t really SUVs if you want to get into the mathematical truth of it,” says some idiot named Mark Allan, the head of the North American Environmental Protection Agency. “There’s 148 million other cars that are out there every day doing far more harm simply due to their sheer number.” I had no idea what the fuck Mark was talking about so I told him I had to go. He added: “People want to blame the rich because it’s fashionable, but blaming SUVs for air pollution is like saying one fat, greedy rat ruined your apartment when the floors are covered wall-to-wall with army ants. Unfortunately, it’s the poor that are killing Mother Nature simply because there’s so many of them. Thirty-eight million Toyota Camrys do a lot more damage than two thousand Hummers. Air pollution in America isn’t so much about how cars consume gas. It’s about how many cars consume gas.” I told Mark to fuck off after that and hung up on the bastard. Toyota Camrys are the problem? Why, because poor people drive them? It’s really sad to see the war against the poor leaking into the environmental movement. Soon you’re going to see “experts” saying the foxhunts are really cool and it’s the people on welfare that are killing all the animals.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) is a group of ballsy animal-rights activists dedicated to letting people know the truth about rich bastards who shoot foxes for “sport.” The same way the American elite treat our highways like stretched-out playgrounds for their SUV amusement, rich British cocksuckers are galloping through the countryside with no regard for the dead foxes they leave in their wake. At the Center for Animal Cruelty in Bristol, England, Barbara Roan was happy to explain exactly how evil this sport truly is: “While I believe that hunting foxes in Britain is reprehensible, I think that people tend to focus too much attention on that just because the perpetrators are upper class.” Fuck you, bitch (I thought to myself), but she kept talking shit. “I mean, last year only 25,000 foxes were killed in foxhunts.”

At this point I was so outraged I yelled, “Oh, and I suppose poor people driving Toyota Camrys are more to blame!” into the phone. Barbara was obviously on the bullshit payroll too, because she came out with this crap: “Actually, yes. Roadkills account for the death of 80 million animals a year in Britain and more than five times that in America. The strange thing about this business is nobody wants to discuss numbers. They’re more interested in how

cute something is. Like with seal hunting in Canada. Americans rail against the hunts and I support that, but that’s only 280,000 animals a year and the seal population is still thriving. Americans kill 20,000 chickens a minute. Why are we, the animal-rights movement, devoting so many of our resources to the cute animals or the animals that rich people kill? There are far more pressing dangers internationally that nobody is discussing, and I’m not just talking about endangered species. In China, for example, 2001 was the Year of the Snake and they killed millions of these reptiles for silly superstitions like adding snake tongues to an exotic drink. The snake population was devastated there, when only a few years before it had been thriving. Of course, the media doesn’t want to hear that because images of dead snakes don’t trigger people’s sympathy the way images of baby seals do. It’s all about how much they resemble a cartoon. Here in our office, one of the more cynical staff members put a word balloon on a poster we have that depicts a baby seal. It says, ‘Don’t kill me. I have big eyes.’ I was so angry at his callousness that I couldn’t even look at it when I first got here, but the more I learn about this culture the more profound his joke becomes. I don’t know what most people’s agendas are when they talk about animal rights, but to be honest, it rarely seems to be predicated on saving the most animals possible.” Despite being angrier than I have ever been in my life, I refrained from fire-bombing Barbara’s building. She is a stupid cow who has been brainwashed by the fat cats in Washington—an elite group of corrupt politicians that would happily wipe out the poor if they could. A group that will do anything to divert your eyes from the fucking truth: Fat, rich, lazy Americans are the reason this, our earth, is going up in smoke. Everything they do hurts our planet more than a million poor people could ever dream of. Who do you think does all the recycling in this country? The millionaires in Beverly Hills? Yeah, right. They couldn’t give two shits about conserving our resources. I asked Adam Silcoff of Michigan’s Land Preservation Society what we can do to force those rich bastards to wake up and take care of their garbage, and he seemed to be on the same corporate crack-pipe everyone else was on. “Well, the truth is,” he paused like a true ass, “more and more environmentalists are starting to realize that recycling is a Band-Aid solution. Think of it like this: Humans are to the earth what a parasite is to your body. Your body can handle one or two, but when they’re covering 90 percent of you it doesn’t matter how civil and kind they are. They’re parasites. Some are bigger than others, but that’s not the problem. A living being simply cannot handle a virus covering that much of their body.”

Another fucking idiot full of shit. Goodbye! It seems the more environmentalists I spoke to the more I got the same old shit. “People are the problem—not what they do.” It was like they were saying the best way to save the world was to have a fucking abortion. Like Michael Roan, a self-described “environmental statistician,” dared to say to me, “The thing about giving birth is, that’s one person who will then have two children, who will then have two or more children. Within three generations you may have multiplied your strain on the environment five times over. That means you are five times more taxing on the planet than you would be if you didn’t have kids. Now, you can recycle and drive a fuel-efficient car and only eat tofu, but the point is, someone who has multiplied themselves five times over can never be as easy on the environment as someone who hasn’t, no matter how many token recycling gestures they come up with.”

That’s when I totally lost it. I said, “Okay, Mr. Roan, so you’re saying that if a rich person who drives an SUV, goes on foxhunts and never recycles, decides he’s not going to have kids, then he’s better than me—a vegetarian, with one kid, who recycles and has never so much as killed a fly?”

“Environmentally speaking?” the idiot replied. “As far as Mother Nature is concerned, she would much rather tolerate the childless rich person. In the long run she’s better off with him.” I was so dumbfounded by this guy’s stupidity I hung up the phone in disbelief. Then I went over to my son who was sleeping on the couch. I looked at him and swore I would never let him or his brothers and sisters or any of their children or any of their children’s grandchildren or any of their grandchildren’s children’s children turn out like the oblivious buffoons I had talked to on the phone today.

Pashmina, my dad had the first car you showed. First in mustard, then in black, then in maroon convertible with tan leather lining. Driving a car like that is just begging for attention though. We couldn't even stop and get gas without someone asking what kind of car it was. (I guess that's part of what my dad liked about it?)

My family had a Renault for about 4 months until it plinkered out -- that was the extent of our "Buy French" campaign.

Orbit (Orbit), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 04:15 (twenty-two years ago)

orbit can you take the personal drama off board? we really don't care.

I drive a 93 red Chevy Lumina with a CD player, no AC and dying power steering. The back window is covered in band stickers. Here's a picture of its window that got shot at school.

I also have a 95 dodge neon with no ac and which is about to blow a piston. Currently the battery is dead and it's sitting in the parking lot where it has been ransacked by crackheads several times. It also has a back window covered in stickers.

I recently purchased a 2001 Nissan Altima - 16 K miles, sunroof, leather interior, CD/Cassette/radio. It's sweet.

I miss my Saturn (also called "Laura's Money Pit"), though.

Glenn bought one of the new Honda hybrids last year - the Insight. It's awesome.

I drive a version of this (a 1988 Acura Integra) in gold.

It's holding up surprisingly well, and it did astonishingly well in last year's snow storms. But I'm hoping to get a certified preowned Toyota some time this year.

The only cars I like right now on aesthetic grounds are Jaguars (but they're just Fords in pricy shells!) and Mini Coopers.

Ha! I have a new motor! After deciding that my budget didn't quite stretch to a BMW (sorry CJ) and *nearly* getting a silver VW Bora, I just bought a 2 year old Toyota Avensis GS. Wow - what a motor! OK, I've only had crap cars before, but this has everything - aircon, sat nav and YEEESSS - a CD PLAYER! And for it's size it goes like shit off a shovel, which I didn't expect.

i just bought an acura tsx, which is the japanese/european honda accord. (smaller than the buick-sized accords sold here in god's country.) it's very plush, gets lousy mileage, and i love it. it's "meteor silver" which is kind of an ice blue. very easy to look at. how did i ever survive without heated seats, dual climate control, and a six-cd changer in the dash?

dan (dan), Friday, 30 January 2004 23:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw one of those TSXs at the car show a couple weeks ago and liked it a lot. It's on my list of potentials.

SAAB 900i referred to upthread = dead!! - the engine = totally fux0r3d.

I'm sick of throwing all my spare money into running a car, so I'm taking a year off. If I need to get somewhere off public transport, or something like that, I'll hire a car, it'll be cheaper than pwning one.

Possibly thinking abt getting some old piece that I can fix myself when it goes wrong (which it will) late this year or early next year - shortlist = Wolseley 1500, Singer Vogue or Gazelle, Sunbeam Rapier or Alpine. We shall see.

I'm really looking forward to having some money again.
