There are no songs named after a man (except "Mickey")

There are tons of songs named after women--"Mandy," "Julia," "Angie" (x 2), "Martha My Dear," "Dear Prudence," etc. There's only one song named after a man--"Mickey (You're so Fine)," and it's really more a cheerleading cheer than a song. Are men more romantic? Do women view men as interchangeable ("it's guys like you Mickey...")? Or is naming somebody in song a silly male thing to do?

Jimmy Jimmy - ohhhhhhhhhhh!

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 24 November 2003 16:27 (twenty-two years ago)

It's funny, both "Mickey" and "Denis" are reworkings of songs originally about women ("Kitty" and "Denise" respectively).

bad jode (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 24 November 2003 16:27 (twenty-two years ago)

All the songs above, strangely, are sung by guys to guys (I think).
Let me limit this to songs sung to a love interest. Then I think the theory holds.

Bnad, Monday, 24 November 2003 16:28 (twenty-two years ago)

The Clash - "Jimmy Jazz," "Tommy Gun" (arguably), "Sean Flynn"

First names only? That's cheating. Surely this is about if a song has a man's name, period. And there are thousands.

There are very few songs named after hedgehogs.

ChrissieH (chrissie1068), Monday, 24 November 2003 16:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Doesn't "Jude" refer to Julian Lennon, who was kid back then? Not exactly a "man".

Fuck me. First names only and how we need to make sure the balls don't have any hair on them. How about only the first names of men with pubic hair who happen to be left-handed and bi-lingual?

ChrissieH (chrissie1068), Monday, 24 November 2003 16:39 (twenty-two years ago)

jimmy james -- beatsie boys

enrique (Enrique), Monday, 24 November 2003 16:39 (twenty-two years ago)

how is first names only cheating? it makes it harder! i assumed this was specifically about songs where the title is JUST a male first name

stevem (blueski), Monday, 24 November 2003 16:41 (twenty-two years ago)

The point is, the premise of this thread was so loopy and disastrously wrong that this should have been recognised! 'There are no songs named after a man'... apart from the 2,338 songs that were, anyway.

(I made that number up. It's very conservative.)

ChrissieH (chrissie1068), Monday, 24 November 2003 16:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Has anyone said "Jeremy" yet ?

Fuzzy (Fuzzy), Monday, 24 November 2003 16:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Beautiful John was by Madder Rose, about ten years ago I think.

"Hey Matthew" by Karel Fialka. If there was a song about Mark you could have "Hey Matthew" "________ Mark" "Luka" and "Beautiful John".

Jonnie, Monday, 24 November 2003 16:45 (twenty-two years ago)

thread title=he would claim that he invented the question mark

enrique (Enrique), Monday, 24 November 2003 16:47 (twenty-two years ago)

thanks Jonnie

there aren't that many songs that just have a male first name as the title - i'm guessing about 28 rather than 2338 - there are surely more with just a female first name

stevem (blueski), Monday, 24 November 2003 16:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah but there are absolutley no songs about my real name, none, can't find them, tried, failed. Sux.

smee (smee), Monday, 24 November 2003 16:48 (twenty-two years ago)

There was, but the Mark in question was a hedgehog. A pre-pubescent hedgehog, no less. So it doesn't count.

ChrissieH (chrissie1068), Monday, 24 November 2003 16:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, obviously, men are constantly mooning over some specific slapper with large breasts. Women are more apt to moon over some nameless (i.e. non-existent) fantasy figure rather than that ugly monkey next door with bad armpits.

ChrissieH (chrissie1068), Monday, 24 November 2003 16:50 (twenty-two years ago)

"Ben" you fules!

(I mean, it is a manly name, even though it's about a rat...that counts, right?)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 24 November 2003 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

i said Ben

Chrissie, easy on the crack there eh?

stevem (blueski), Monday, 24 November 2003 16:52 (twenty-two years ago)

GUS GUS 'DAVID'

stevem (blueski), Monday, 24 November 2003 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I doubt a rat counts if poor ickle Julian and his non-descended balls don't. See: named AFTER a man. A song about a woman named Humphrey doesn't count, either.

Why am I taking this seriously?

ChrissieH (chrissie1068), Monday, 24 November 2003 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

'why am i taking crack' you mean (sorry i am just a bit confused by your posts)

808 State's 'Leo Leo' nearly counts

stevem (blueski), Monday, 24 November 2003 16:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Damnit Steverino.

Y'know, there's always "Lola".

x-post actually Chrissie I think you're really on to something. I think your "women with fantasy being as muse vs. men with specific large-jubblied woman as muse" theory sounds quite OTM.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 24 November 2003 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

"Jeremy" by Pearl Jam

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 24 November 2003 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

stevem (blueski), Monday, 24 November 2003 16:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, my post about the male vs. female fantasy thing was broadly a serious point. I believe more women than men would fantasise about ideals and not need to put a name to it... the guys are just thinking about them jugs.

[/sexism]

ChrissieH (chrissie1068), Monday, 24 November 2003 16:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Interesting note: most of the songs with men's names in the title also happen to be songs written by/performed by men.

ChrissieH (chrissie1068), Monday, 24 November 2003 16:59 (twenty-two years ago)

oh they must all be thinking about their cocks then

stevem (blueski), Monday, 24 November 2003 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

The thing is, I know of plenty of female songwriters who have written songs about specific men. Ani DiFranco, fr'instance, has written a whole bunch of songs about the same man, yet none of them are called "Andy" (the guy/her [now ex-]husband's name).

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 24 November 2003 17:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 24 November 2003 17:02 (twenty-two years ago)

When Bowie wrote Lady Stardust (a song about though not named after a man), I kinda imagine his thoughts drifted towards the cock area once or twice. Yes.

ChrissieH (chrissie1068), Monday, 24 November 2003 17:02 (twenty-two years ago)

ChrissieH (chrissie1068), Monday, 24 November 2003 17:06 (twenty-two years ago)

What do you mean by "sheltered"? I'm not saying it's a good thing, but we do live in a patriarchy, sad as it is.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 24 November 2003 17:06 (twenty-two years ago)

"Charles" by Scrawl

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Monday, 24 November 2003 17:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm glad we agree it's sad. I just think the phrasing implies a much bigger percentage than it is in reality. I'd agree it's a majority. Never mind. I'm trying to be cheery, so don't get me onto the patriarchy... :)

ChrissieH (chrissie1068), Monday, 24 November 2003 17:11 (twenty-two years ago)

bnw (bnw), Monday, 24 November 2003 17:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Or is naming somebody in song a silly male thing to do?

I think it's related to the fact that you never see a woman standing underneath a guy's window with a guitar - or who is supposed to be wooing whom.

o. nate (onate), Monday, 24 November 2003 17:51 (twenty-two years ago)

"Jesse" -- Carly Simon
"Angry Johnny" -- Poe (and, for that matter, "Trigger Happy Jack" -- Poe)
"Joey" -- Concrete Blonde

But yeah, the central point holds. I think it has something to do with the possessiveness implied by intimate use of the first name; guys can get away with that and still seem loving (rather than obsessive/pathetic) for assorted psycho-cultural reasons, but it's riskier territory for women. Women aren't supposed to seem possessive, it spooks guys. Or something like that.

Not a single mention of Johnny B. Goode??? Or the memorably ludicrously titled 'What's The Frequency Kenneth' by the forever ludicrous REM?

Chicago's 'Harry Truman', Marvin Gaye's 'Abraham Martin and John', Billy Joel 'James', Elton John 'Song For Guy' (yes, Guy was the kid's name)

Equal opportunity rules: Robert Palmer 'Johnny and Mary', Dire Straits 'Romeo and Juliet', Black Sorrows 'Harley and Rose', John Cougar Melonhead 'Jack and Diane'.

(BTW Suzanbne Vega IS 'Luka' (check out the first line).)
