"Let's have a FAP, eh?", or, This is the thread where I wander around Western Canada for a few weeks

As you probably already know, I'm about to go on a mammoth tour around Western Canada. Eleven days, 4100 miles (6600 km), many long drives through Zen nothingness, fistfuls of ketchup-flavored potato chips until we puke.

Here's the roadmap:

http://www.theminorthirds.com/pix-can-trip.gif

And here's Ryan (in glasses) and me:

http://www.theminorthirds.com/tm3-cp-rt-400.jpg

And we're coming to, you know, rock, more or less.

I'll be in Edmonton (hi Anthony! hi Fields of Salmon!), Saskatoon (hi, uh, no one I know!), Winnipeg (hi Bryan! hi Jodi!), Regina (hi Huckleberry!) and Moose Jaw (hi dk!). I think everyone who lives there is aware that I'm coming and all. If not: E-mail me!

We leave Wednesday afternoon. I have never been outside the U.S. before. We are terribly, terribly excited.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 24 November 2003 17:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I know you're leaving Charlotte and Jake out because you're afraid of their power and will kick you out of the band you started, like Syd Barrett.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 24 November 2003 17:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, surely not because Jake is on another (less expensive, much noisier) Gang Wizard tour and because Charlotte can't get the time off work.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 24 November 2003 17:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm building one of those circular projection screens for the show so you can show films like Pink Floyd.

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 24 November 2003 17:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, surely not because Jake is on another (less expensive, much noisier) Gang Wizard tour and because Charlotte can't get the time off work.

You and your rational reasons! How dare you be accurate!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 24 November 2003 17:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, best to ya guys, Chris and Ryan. Hope you can actually convince c*st*ms to let you off without buying an entertainment work permit! Oh, and I love you both.

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 24 November 2003 17:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I feel partially responsible for this...

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 24 November 2003 18:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Me too but it'll be ok.

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 24 November 2003 18:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I had nothing to do with it. But it's nice that I get an honourable mention.

Jodi (Celerina), Monday, 24 November 2003 18:02 (twenty-two years ago)

when I left my apt this morning, the wind chill was at -33.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 24 November 2003 18:02 (twenty-two years ago)

You were a fool to leave your apartm... oh.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 24 November 2003 18:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Jodi, your role was small but you're still mentioned in the liner notes, you're just as blood-stained and frostbitten as the rest of them.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 24 November 2003 18:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Goddamned chinook coming this weekend. It might not even be cold while you're here, Chris!

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 24 November 2003 18:05 (twenty-two years ago)

seriously, bring warm clothes and lots of em, and an emergency car kit.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 24 November 2003 18:05 (twenty-two years ago)

or not, apparently it'll be tropical

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 24 November 2003 18:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I've warned him, Huck, but warm = 0 C, so it's not like it'll be balmy. Chinooks often mean crazy sudden snowstorms, too.

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 24 November 2003 18:07 (twenty-two years ago)

We have an "emergency blanket". Ryan bought it. I said to him, "You only bought one?" There was an awkward, tender moment.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 24 November 2003 18:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Also: Ryan has AAA (which Bryan says is cooperative with CAA) and he's an Eagle Scout, he knows how to make a fort in a snow bank. No fear!

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 24 November 2003 18:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Hurrah!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 24 November 2003 18:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Unless something weird happens there won't be enough snow for forts, sadly. Not around here anyway. Make sure you have lots of candy and candles and that you keep the phone charged up.

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 24 November 2003 18:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Candy?

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 24 November 2003 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

You should have candy with you at all times! Even when there isn't the threat of a snow storm or putting the car in the ditch.

Jodi (Celerina), Monday, 24 November 2003 18:19 (twenty-two years ago)

yes. it's canada's currency.

dyson (dyson), Monday, 24 November 2003 18:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes. Good energy source in case you're stranded for any amount of time. You're not really going to be anywhere where you'll likely get into trouble (at least not on the Canadian side), but it's still a good idea. Most people put a bunch of candy into their winter survival kits here. Mentalists.

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 24 November 2003 18:20 (twenty-two years ago)

and you can use it to make the locals live up to their polite stereotypes...

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 24 November 2003 18:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Gimme some candy!

Er, gimme some candy, please.

Jodi (Celerina), Monday, 24 November 2003 18:22 (twenty-two years ago)

see?

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 24 November 2003 18:23 (twenty-two years ago)

"But We Had Candy: The true story of an American band stranded on the dangerous and uncharted side of the Trans-Canada Highway."

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 24 November 2003 18:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Should I bring American candy?

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 24 November 2003 18:23 (twenty-two years ago)

that would be the left hand side, ey, b'y?

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 24 November 2003 18:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes! Bring Kraft Caramels!!!

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 24 November 2003 18:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm told that when visiting Third World countries such as Canada, it's best to have a some crisp American dollar bills. It's like gold to the natives!

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 24 November 2003 18:25 (twenty-two years ago)

"Kraft Caramels" are surely a Canadian candy.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 24 November 2003 18:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Smarties vs Rockets FITE!

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 24 November 2003 18:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Do they still have Kraft Caramels in the states?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 24 November 2003 18:26 (twenty-two years ago)

YES THEY DO!!!

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 24 November 2003 18:26 (twenty-two years ago)

holy crap! yes! I think Kraft Caramels singlehandedly stunted my growth.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 24 November 2003 18:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Your best bet with American currency is to convince the locals your 1 dollar bill is actually a 5 since we can't tell the damm things apart.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 24 November 2003 18:27 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, I'll look for Kraft Caramels. I don't even like caramel.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 24 November 2003 18:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Noodles, it's our form of vengeance for all the time we get your worthless quarters out of vending machines.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 24 November 2003 18:28 (twenty-two years ago)

My first halloween without Kraft Caramels was a sad thing indeed. I used to make sure there were tons on hand at home so as to not run out over the course of a night.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 24 November 2003 18:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Well your American quarters are accepted, but only at par so we keep the 10 cents or whatever.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 24 November 2003 18:29 (twenty-two years ago)

ts: regular vs chocolate Kraft caramels

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 24 November 2003 18:29 (twenty-two years ago)

regular

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 24 November 2003 18:30 (twenty-two years ago)

http://www.oldtimecandy.com/images/candypix-pages/kraft-caramels_small.jpg

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 24 November 2003 18:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, think of this this way, Chris. At least you could survive off an economy pack of AERO chocolate bars if the weather halts you guys. (something you cannot get in the states)

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 24 November 2003 18:32 (twenty-two years ago)

(Well of course you can get Aero in the states but you have to pay import prices.)

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 24 November 2003 18:32 (twenty-two years ago)

they grow on trees here.
not that we have trees, mind you.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 24 November 2003 18:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm regular as well, Noodles! heh. The chocolate ones do taste really good.
Canadians! ADVISE ME! I am gonna get a really good bottle of rye for when Chris is here. What do you like? The 12 year old CC is good but still a mixing rye. Is that Crown Royal in the gold bottle good? What else? Seems silly to have them come here and drink bourbon, eh?

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 24 November 2003 18:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I useta drink Golden Wedding in high school. Ugh.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 24 November 2003 18:39 (twenty-two years ago)

What do you freaks want Kraft Caramels for when you can get McIntosh Toffee up here?

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 24 November 2003 18:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Crown Royal mmmmmmmmmmmmmm,
a bottle of screech
and a cases of Sleman's (Cream Ale or Silver Creek Lager)
and a bottle of Iniskillin icewine or Late Harvest Riesling from Pellham's and you got all your bases covered.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 24 November 2003 18:40 (twenty-two years ago)

and you can get it in ice cream...

(in case you can't tell, despite the multi-culti tapestry, Cdns are singleminded about sugar, we need it, lots of it, winter's cold!)

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 24 November 2003 18:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Boh.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 24 November 2003 18:41 (twenty-two years ago)

x-post:
and a splif

dyson (dyson), Monday, 24 November 2003 18:42 (twenty-two years ago)

and a smidgen of snow down the back of yr park to make you do the jig

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 24 November 2003 18:42 (twenty-two years ago)

yr PARKA

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 24 November 2003 18:43 (twenty-two years ago)

"Golden Wedding"?

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 24 November 2003 18:47 (twenty-two years ago)

(One of my favorite brand names of bourbon is "Early Times". It's like Celestial Seasoning's whiskey or something: The best part of waking up is Early Times in your cup; the label should have a hungover teddy bear bleary and reaching for a bottle.)

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 24 November 2003 18:48 (twenty-two years ago)

We have a couple of good local breweries (Fort Garry esp.) so the Sleeman's can be had elsewhere. Wine? Maybe, though wouldn't it just take up space where more Crown Royal could be?

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 24 November 2003 18:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, what is the beer that we should drink while we're in Lloydminster? Remember that we're poncy snobs.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 24 November 2003 18:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Sleeman's and Big Rock beers should be available most places.

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 24 November 2003 18:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I think somebody drinks Early Times in every single Elmore Leonard novel I've read.

x-post, whatever you do, don't drink Calgary brand beer. I know the buffalo looks inviting...but resist.
Actually, Calgary is the Golden Wedding of beers. Cheap.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 24 November 2003 18:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the local brand in Lloydminster is Oil Derrick Brewery. I hear it has a rather unique taste.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 24 November 2003 18:51 (twenty-two years ago)

What about BEER beer?

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 24 November 2003 18:52 (twenty-two years ago)

there useta be Saskies

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 24 November 2003 18:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Those late harvest/ice wines clock in at 20% though. Though I think they run you 60 bucks and up for a half bottle even at the LCBO's.
They have insane amounts of sugar in them and they contain alcohol, its a winning combination.
Oh Chris, if you like Mountian Dew or Red Bull, stock before you cross the border, its just not the same up here.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 24 November 2003 18:53 (twenty-two years ago)

OIl Derrick Brewery? This is going to be awesome.

I'll pass on the Dew. And the Bull.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 24 November 2003 18:54 (twenty-two years ago)

also, you guys have probably heard, but the beer here is a little more, uh, fortified. I think Coors Light is probably the closest non-import to an American beer. Yeah, we have several beers that have the same name and packaging as US beers, but they're actually Cdn-style beers. So watch out.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 24 November 2003 18:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Im trying to remeber the Guelph brewery that put mountians on the cans. Worst beer ever that isn't Bud.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 24 November 2003 18:55 (twenty-two years ago)

The strength thing depends on the state your coming from last I check when I swung through New Engerland.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 24 November 2003 18:57 (twenty-two years ago)

actually, Noodles, the state you're in depends on the strength of the beer, har har har har har har

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 24 November 2003 19:01 (twenty-two years ago)

so true

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 24 November 2003 19:02 (twenty-two years ago)

what's with the snubbing of eastern canada you?!

s1utsky (slutsky), Monday, 24 November 2003 19:09 (twenty-two years ago)

They aren't allowed to put the alcohol content on beer. But it does vary from state to state -- some states like Colorado have "near beer" which is very weak, and you have to go to a liquor store for your actual beer.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 24 November 2003 19:10 (twenty-two years ago)

It's just too far for this trip, s1utsky. Also I'm guessing the Montrealers wouldn't care as much about an American band singing about Saskatchewan as, say, the Saskatchewani would.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 24 November 2003 19:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the way you say "the Saskatchewani" like "the Illuminati" it makes me feel, well, significant.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 24 November 2003 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I WOULD CARE

s1utsky (slutsky), Monday, 24 November 2003 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

(do you sing exclusively about saskatchewan?)

s1utsky (slutsky), Monday, 24 November 2003 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Saskatchewani sounds like the name of an ancient Celtic tribe

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 24 November 2003 19:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Our latest album (see here, where you can also get Ned's album and even download a video I made for a friend's band):

http://www.tapemountain.com/saskenv.jpg

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 24 November 2003 19:17 (twenty-two years ago)

But no, we also sing about poorly-thought-out attempts to do grevious harm to the people you claim to be in love with.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 24 November 2003 19:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I knew I had an empty around here somewhere:
http://ox.eicat.ca/~scarruthers/ilx/oil-derrick-brewery.jpg

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 24 November 2003 19:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm sorry I won't get out to Ontario to slam back a bottle of Grizz Whizz.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 24 November 2003 19:24 (twenty-two years ago)

they have a really awesome song about meat as well

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 24 November 2003 19:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, but we didn't write that song.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 24 November 2003 19:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I should expound on the recommendation to drink Big Rock beer.

Have a pint of Grasshopper whilst in Edmonton (the most common thing to drink). It's actually an ale (despite it's effervescence and lagery taste), and the real reason why most Edmontonians' fingers smell of lemon.

fields of salmon (fieldsofsalmon), Monday, 24 November 2003 19:28 (twenty-two years ago)

the first song on that little EP is really excellent too, the revolutionary song. But really, your best songs are covers. (being facetious)

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 24 November 2003 19:31 (twenty-two years ago)

We will be singing The Revolutionary's Love Song on tour; y'all download it so you can sing along.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 24 November 2003 19:33 (twenty-two years ago)

It's just too far for this trip, s1utsky. Also I'm guessing the Montrealers wouldn't care as much about an American band singing about Saskatchewan as, say, the Saskatchewani would.

But but but the Rheos' already did that. Saskatchewan recorded in Montreal is the leadoff to double live even. Or maybe it was in Quebec, I forget.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 24 November 2003 19:34 (twenty-two years ago)

hot hot heat are here tonight with two more excellent opening bands. Metric and the ever-lovin' Unicorns.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 24 November 2003 19:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Trust me on this:
http://ox.eicat.ca/~scarruthers/ilx/mack.jpg
It's fantastic, yo.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 24 November 2003 19:35 (twenty-two years ago)

"Crémeux" is a great word, but I'm not sure if it's as creamy as "creamy".

Well, our double live will be recorded in Moose Jaw, dig?

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 24 November 2003 19:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Sean lost his right ring and index fingers in a freak ice fishing accident.

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 24 November 2003 19:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Let that be a lesson, kids. Don't go ice fishing for freaks.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 24 November 2003 19:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Stupid things we want to do along the way:

* See the fucking mall-strosity.
* Go on the Moose Jaw tunnel tours.
* Stargaze; attempt to see the Northern Lights (I know, it's unlikely).
* Buy a lot of toques, of various levels of tacky souvenirness, for Xmas gifts.
* Not die.
* Go bowling, ideally at the monstrosity but perhaps also in Regina.
* Eat local snacks.
* Go shopping at a supermarket, and thrill to the bilingual packaging and slightly off prices.
* Enjoy the cheapest hotels possible in smaller towns along the way.
* Shiver.
* Snowball fights.

What else am I forgetting? Obviously there are the local fun things that the locals will help us with...

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 24 November 2003 19:46 (twenty-two years ago)

when are you here? wednesday night?

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 24 November 2003 19:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, Huck. We leave Winnipeg Wednesday morning and drive a lot. Then we arrive in Regina. Hopefully we will be leaving early enough that most of the driving will be in daylight (Bryan presumably has to work that day so I reckon this will be done).

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 24 November 2003 19:49 (twenty-two years ago)

* Between Edmonton and Lloydminster, stop in Vegreville to see the huge metal easter egg
* Between Winnipeg and Regina, stop in Brandon and taunt them all for Bryan and me, and if you have lots of extra time, head down highway #10 about an hour until you get to Boissevain, so you can see Tommy the Turtle and stop for eats at the Highway Lunch Good Food Coffee Bar.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 24 November 2003 19:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I have to work Wednesday but I can go for breakky with you guys first if you like. Going to the Highway Lunch Good Food Coffee Bar = U & K!!!

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 24 November 2003 19:52 (twenty-two years ago)

BAH, take the day off. It's the least you could do in the service of ROCK.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 24 November 2003 19:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm taking Monday and Tuesday off and I don't have to come in until noon or so Wednesday. ISN'T THAT ROCK ENOUGH?!?!!?

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 24 November 2003 19:58 (twenty-two years ago)

ROCK means fuck the job, live for today!

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 24 November 2003 19:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Especially if Highway Lunch Good Food Coffee Bar is involved! Where are your priorities, MAN?

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 24 November 2003 20:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I CAN ROCK YOUR NUTS CLEAN OFF FOR FUCK, EVEN WITH GOING BACK TO WORK AT AROUND NOON WEDNESDAY

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 24 November 2003 20:01 (twenty-two years ago)

A passionate Canadian!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 24 November 2003 20:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Jimi Hendrix didn't half-set his guitar on fire!

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 24 November 2003 20:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Holy crap, the Canadians are rioting.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 24 November 2003 20:08 (twenty-two years ago)

no no, there's just a sale on sidewalk salt...

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 24 November 2003 20:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Anyway huge metal easter eggs sound awesome. I wish we had enough time to hunt down all the stupid shit in Sask -- I don't remember if we'll be anywhere near that boat the guy made (argh half-remembered stories argh).

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 24 November 2003 20:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Visiting the pysanka in Vegreville always seems like a good idea until you notice how far off the highway it is. I don't know how many times I've driven by it intending to stop and have just said fuck it and kept going.

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 24 November 2003 20:14 (twenty-two years ago)

The town looks like it's on the highway; how far away is the egg?

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 24 November 2003 20:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Jesus, it's not THAT far off the highway, you just take the city route instead of the Trans-Canada. Pow, there it is. Extra time: maybe 15 minutes plus basking time. Compared to the driving time between cities it's minimal.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 24 November 2003 20:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry, not the Trans-Canada, the Yellowhead. Still.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 24 November 2003 20:18 (twenty-two years ago)

and considering how far you've come to see big dumb crap, you owe it to yrself

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 24 November 2003 20:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, go see it. Don't listen to me. I'm a hoser.

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 24 November 2003 20:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Um so the Yellowhead is the 16 and the Trans-Canada is the 1? I thought they were both Trans-Canada? I am confused and don't want to be eaten.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 24 November 2003 20:23 (twenty-two years ago)

They both are (sort of) but the #1 is the one we usually mean when we say Trans-Canada.

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 24 November 2003 20:26 (twenty-two years ago)

but, in western ontario (so you don't have to worry about it) the T/C splits up and becomes #17 and #71, which are both The King's Highway.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 24 November 2003 20:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Isn't it delightful in this case that Ontario's irrelevant, Huck?

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 24 November 2003 20:33 (twenty-two years ago)

it's exactly as we planned! nothing can stop us now! begin Phase Two of...Operation: Western Domination!

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 24 November 2003 20:35 (twenty-two years ago)

(Pssst... You guys don't have a king.)

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 24 November 2003 20:35 (twenty-two years ago)

(yeah, but the signs are already paid for)

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 24 November 2003 20:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I BEG TO DIFFER!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 24 November 2003 20:45 (twenty-two years ago)

WTF is that?

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 24 November 2003 20:45 (twenty-two years ago)

'That boat the guy made' = the Sukanen ship? It sucks! It's just an old-fashionedy yacht thing. But they have really cool easter egg hunts there.

OhandthanksfortheCDandstuff.

d k (d k), Monday, 24 November 2003 21:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Well the story's really good. I'll just reread the story again.

I hope you liked the CD -- we'll be playing Moose Jaw after all. Hope to meet you at some point while I'm there.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 24 November 2003 23:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Enjoy, Chris!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 06:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm starting to think maybe that egg actually is cool.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 07:17 (twenty-two years ago)

OK but it's cooler when there are Ukranian folk dancers prancing about.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 07:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I was dancing on the inside.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 07:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I do not wish to contemplate Sean's internal folk dance.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 14:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Chris.
I got you into SEE, a biggsh article.

anthony easton (anthony), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 15:54 (twenty-two years ago)

it's not brutally cold today!

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 15:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw the poster for yr show here. I guess you're opening for someone.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 16:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Anth, has the paper come out or did you talk with Heather or someone? That's awesome, you are generally to be heralded as "he who is the man".

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 16:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Or the moose, if you prefer.

Huck, yes, we're opening for the Perms.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 16:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know them.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 16:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I know them. Shit, those dudes used to hang around my record store and we even carried their first album on consignment. It had the worst cover ever--or best, depending on your perspective! I haven't heard them in a long long time though so not sure what they're like any more.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 16:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Woah, the band I was in that was called Kangaroo Joey and the Sea Oats, and then later the Cretins, changed their name to the Perms after I moved. But I don't think it's the same band, seeing as how that was 8 years ago and in New Delhi, India.

NA (Nick A.), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 16:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Here's that first cover:
http://www.theperms.com/permsImages/tightPerm_CDcover.jpg

(By the way, I should be clear that I actually liked the guys, even if I wasn't overly fond of that first cover!)

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 16:09 (twenty-two years ago)

too bad it's not the Germs! That would be something.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 16:10 (twenty-two years ago)

The sound clips from their second album are way better than the sound clips from their first. They've added some horns.

Huck: They're from Winnipeg (originally from Brandon). "The perms dot com".

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 16:10 (twenty-two years ago)

i picked up a couple of copies.

anthony easton (anthony), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 16:11 (twenty-two years ago)

All Winnipeg bands were originally from Brandon. You heard it here first.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 16:12 (twenty-two years ago)

All Vancouver bands are originally from Regina, or at least their drummers are.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 18:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Chris.. just think.

TIM HORTON'S!

BLENZ!

(Actually do they have Blenz east of Vancouver?)

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 19:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Blenz are only in the Vancouver/Victoria area. Once he has some Tim's he won't want anything else anyway.

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 19:18 (twenty-two years ago)

The posters are not working, i have emailed them, put them on disc/CD, uploaded them to a website and all of this methods have failed.

Chris, if it is between the posters and my mental health, my mental health wins.

anthony easton (anthony), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 21:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Of course, Anth. A bag of dicks is too good for Staples.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 23:28 (twenty-two years ago)

So we're going to be driving up to Edmonton first. What's the best route? This is the only really confusing leg of the trip -- it seems like there's this "short cut" road (BC-5) that Yahoo wants me to take instead of staying on the main drag...

The other consideration is that we'd probably want to find a motel somewhere along that part of the trip -- if we took the shortcut, Merritt seems like about where we'd need to stop. But I have no idea how frequent the Econolodges are (we'd rather not sleep in the car, you know?) on the highways up there...

Well, anyway, any suggestions would be super.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 04:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Good grief, don't sleep in the car.

ac, Wednesday, 26 November 2003 04:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I've taken highway 5 up from Kamloops through to Edmonton before and it's fine, major enough really. When it comes to BC, there are no "main drags". No matter which way you go though, it'll mean winding your way along roads along the sides of mountains, so please drive very carefully, and don't do it while you're tired.

Unless you have a pressing reason to stop in Seattle and or Vancouver, you may find it's better to go across the 84 and then up to Spokane. More smaller roads but it looks like it'd keep you out of the mountains for longer perhaps. But I've never driven that road, so I may be full of it.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 04:48 (twenty-two years ago)

The #5 is an awsome drive(it is a toll high way so be prepared), is sholud be in good condition this time of year. A friend and I drove it in 8 hours from Jasper to Vancouver but it took about ten back(it's mostly up hill). All other roads are not as well kept, plus some are closed during the winter(to much snow). Then east at Mount Robson to High way 16. Jasper is a super fun town, so if you are looking to spend a night try the Athabasca Hotel. Not the nicest but cheap and in stumbling distance of all the local watering holes. Fab pizza at North Face. Watch out for elk, moose, and mountain goats in the Jasper/Hinton Region. Safe driving, have fun and see you when you hit the 'peg(winnipeg).

danielle g. (danielle g.), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 05:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yeah, taking the #5 does give you the advantage of seeing Mount Robson! Definitely one of the more memorable mountains in BC!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 05:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, so that seems like a boon for the #5. No one will defend the Trans-Canada for that stretch? Interesting mountain? Not too bad...

We won't be able to make it all the way to Jasper in one night (hopefully we'll make it all the way to Merritt (or wherever) and not just go to sleep on the other side of the border.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 06:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't really know anyone on this thread (oh, hi, Sean!), but all joking aside... be very very careful. Any animal not already hibernating is liable to jump out in front of you in a calculated bid to shock the American tourist. I think they take lots of wagers in the depths of the forest on this kind of thing. Watch for that telltale green/yellow double glint if you're driving at dawn/dusk/night. In fact, no. Don't drive at night.

You guys gonna be in Vancouver?

David A. (Davant), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 07:00 (twenty-two years ago)

We won't be in Vancouver this trip (we're from Portland, so we'll hit it soon enough).

You're telling me there's something other than night that far north, this time of year?

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 08:13 (twenty-two years ago)

there is a great little travel lodge in kelowna, that is cheap and clean and has a pool/biz center, i would recommend going into kelowna first instead of meritt, which has nothing but a lumber mill.

anthony easton (anthony), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 08:52 (twenty-two years ago)

We should be on the road in five hours or less: Whee!

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 20:36 (twenty-two years ago)

At the same exact time, I will hopefully be sleazing it up with Spencer and Ned in a slimy bar underneath a building with a large neon "Gaylord" in the middle of LA. Coincidience?

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 20:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I hope you weren't planning on doing any learning, cuz Regina's declared WAR on Libraries!

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 21:02 (twenty-two years ago)

db: Are you going to go to the Gang Wizard show? Jake and I figured that Friday night will be when Gang Wizard will be playing in San Diego and we'll be playing in Edmonton and we'll be furthest apart.

Huck: What?

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 21:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Closing Libraries in Impoverished Neighbourhoods, c or d?

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 21:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I hadn't read that one yet, but I never would have guessed it was your thread!

Only Lorne Calvert can save you now!

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 21:14 (twenty-two years ago)

does that mean Chris thinks I'm illiterate?

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 27 November 2003 14:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't really know what he was going on about there. I'm guessing they made it through customs ok as I didn't get a call in the middle of the night like he warned me I might.

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 27 November 2003 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey Chris ... if you see this post before you receive my e-mail (or are unable to check your e-mail account on the road) drop me a line or post on this thread re: lunch tomorrow.

Safe driving!

fields of salmon (fieldsofsalmon), Thursday, 27 November 2003 21:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Chris, first off, next time you check this, hope your trip is going alright.. I assume you'll be somewhere at an internet stop in Kamloops or Banff next time check the intarveb..

Second, i leave back for Seattle early tomorrow morning, so sadly no Gang Wizard sho for me. :(

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 28 November 2003 03:39 (twenty-two years ago)

chris is here.

anthony easton (anthony), Friday, 28 November 2003 10:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey. It's here. That BC #5 is a bit trecherous even in the mild weather we had but we made it, late, but we made it to Edmonton. Soon we go to the HUGE MALL and go BOWLING and then we play a show. It's exciting.

Huck: Yes.

DB: Aren't they coming to Seattle on this tour, hmmmmmm?

Byran: Customs was a total breeze, we got there at 11:45pm and they closed at midnight, I think the woman just wanted us to go through. She asked if we were going to become wards of the state. Then we panicked when we realized the spedometer didn't illuminate the km/hrs. Eep! Quick, math, now!

chris @ anth's, Friday, 28 November 2003 19:30 (twenty-two years ago)

whoo-hoo!
glad to have you in the country. don't let Larry Spencer scare you off, we're mostly decent human beings. Besides, Spencer's originally from Missouri and that's probably where his bigotry started. Few people suddenly spring into ignorance after middle age. (none of this is to say that there are no bigots in Canada or Sask, there are, they're just not the majority they claim to be)

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 28 November 2003 19:35 (twenty-two years ago)

oh yeah, and you guys are here, what? a week from Saturday? the 9th? when? where? what's your name?
who turned the lights off?

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 28 November 2003 19:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 28 November 2003 19:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 28 November 2003 19:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Chris: Jake should probably let me know if the Gang Wizard are doing the Seattle thing... I hope.

Oh, and hope you're havin' a good time, and very happy you have met Anthong :) I envy a ketchup chip/Tim Horton's diet right about now.

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 28 November 2003 22:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey. Edmonton show was tonight: It was fun. We got a great article in the weekly, which is awesome. Now we're hanging out, drinking a bit, listening to M*mus, and I'm sure he and Ryan will be chatting about art until the wee hours of the morning.

I got a bag of ketchup chips; they were awesome. Still are. Haven't been to a Tim Horton's yet, but I'm suspicious: They look like tidy Dunkin Donuts. Can they really be all that good? We'll probably find out tomorrow or the next day.

Tomorrow we head off to Saskatoon, or at least in that general direction. You likely won't hear from us until we get to Winnipeg, but maybe we'll find an Internet cafe or something. We don't have a gig in Saskatoon and sadly it's too cold for busking (I broke a string in the car from the cold, boo!).

Not that it's really all that cold.

chris @ anth's, Saturday, 29 November 2003 05:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Have I mentioned what a froody dude Anthony is? OK, let me say it again. Anthony is a froody dude.

Rah!

chris @ anth's, Saturday, 29 November 2003 05:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Anthony has always been forwardly Freudy

donut bitch (donut), Saturday, 29 November 2003 06:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha! It's funny because it's true. OK, we're about to run off the the Promised Land. Lloydminster, ho! (Anth has a bit of a hangover, everyone should feed him with hugs.)

chris @ anth's but about to head to sask, Saturday, 29 November 2003 16:54 (twenty-two years ago)

What's your estimated time of arrival here, Chris?

Bryan (Bryan), Saturday, 29 November 2003 16:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, I'm here now. We just went for drinks.

BTW: Saw the egg, loved it. Didn't see enough of Saskatoon, but I picked up some awesome CDs for dirt cheap in Lloydminster: I recommend it. Lloydminster is my favorite midsized town so far (though of course I'm sure Moose Jaw will be far better); Neepawah had a Dairy Queen with this inflated snowman that was throwing itself back either imitating James Brown or coitus, it was hard to tell, but it made it totally classic.

Sean: We took the #16, which was completely fine and brilliant -- we spent far too much time in Kandahar. Took lots of pictures.

Peggers: See you all tomorrow! Rah!

chris at bryan's (Bryan), Monday, 1 December 2003 07:55 (twenty-two years ago)

dooo-ood!

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 1 December 2003 15:20 (twenty-two years ago)

If you ask Bryan nicely he may give you a piggyback ride.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 1 December 2003 15:45 (twenty-two years ago)

The #16 between Sask and Edmonton is great, it's between Saskatoon and Winnipeg that can be very very dicey, especially if it's stormin'. Glad you liked the egg!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 1 December 2003 17:14 (twenty-two years ago)

It was not storming at all, just really fucking windy. So we were fine, and it was a nice road. (Also: Entering Manitoba and being almost immediately accosted with *hills* was hysterical.)

Huck, for pity's sake, e-mail me with the deal on when and where we should meet up Wednesday. I need to figure out when we should leave. (Leave? But we just got here!)

Anyway, Bryan has been a very good tour guide, and now he's playing with a pedal to find the sweet sound (or possibly the "brown sound") for his extended guitar solo at our show tonight.

I look forward to meeting the Pegger crew tonight.

chris at bryan's (Bryan), Monday, 1 December 2003 22:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm all nervous!

Jodi (Celerina), Monday, 1 December 2003 23:28 (twenty-two years ago)

CP, pics must be had of Bryan's star turn....and yours if you dare.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Monday, 1 December 2003 23:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh no, oh no, I have the feare that Bryan will be going all metal and shit on your headz! And yes, photos must be taken!

Glad to hear the road was clear. I think the Sons of Freedom's van broke down somewhere along that road once in the winter and it was pretty ugly.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 04:03 (twenty-two years ago)

The show was grebt! Now I want a pet chicken, too! Bryan didn't get all metal -- he got all shoe-gazey. The boys are very polite, but they haven't given me any candy yet. Maybe they're saving it for Tuesday.

Jodi (Celerina), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 05:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm so glad I got their cd!!

ac, Tuesday, 2 December 2003 06:34 (twenty-two years ago)

...and will ask for the other one too - the one with the tadpole song, please.

ac, Tuesday, 2 December 2003 06:36 (twenty-two years ago)

(The Sons of Freedom?

They were one of the very first bands I ever saw live.. they opened for Skinny Puppy, my very first concert, when i was 16. The Sons were spit on by the hyper mean goth crowd in downtown LA. "PLAY ANOTHER SONG... SHITHEADS!")

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 07:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I was waiting for you to email me! Didn't know if your address worked on the road or what!

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 15:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Huck: Yeah, my e-mail has web access, so as long as I can get online, I can read it. I haven't checked it yet, though, so hopefully you've already e-mailed me.

That's right, ILX before e-mail. Well, it's somebody's home page...

Anyway, the Peg show was terrific, Bryan shoegazed everyone's asses off, and the song about chickens went over like gangbusters, which is always nice. We have some nice pictures of the show and also -- yes -- video, so get ready for bootleg copies of Bryan's soloing on "Alex P. Keaton, Perched Precariously Atop A Ladder, Suddenly And For No Particular Reason Tries To Remember His First Girlfriend's Middle Name" to appear soon. Whoosh!

Jodi, I didn't realize you were part of the caramel cabal; we had some in the car. If we go to dinner tonight or if we do that in-store then I will gladly shower you (or anyone else) with caramels.

chris at bryan's (Bryan), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 16:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Also I left my jacket at Anth's house (my non-heavy-winter one, obv) and I feel like I left a pair of pants somewhere too, but the trip hasn't been THAT interesting yet (saving that for Regina) and so it's probably just in the car somewhere.

And I think I'm going to break down and shave today, I'm tired of looking so scruffy.

chris at bryan's (Bryan), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

you also left socks and underwear here, and ryan left a pair of shoes.

anthony easton (anthony), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

well, Regina just got a whole lot less interesting. In addition to THREE urban libraries, our municipal art gallery (that recently housed a great Chester Brown exhibit), word is out that the last downtown movie theatre will be closing thursday, officially making downtown (where I live) a wasteland.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

and if you have any questions email me quick dammit! cuz I'm gone for lunch in 5 or 6 minutes!

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Chris, make sure to give caramels to Dianne. Sugar is her favourite food. I am not joking.

Jodi (Celerina), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 17:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Hi Jodi!

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 17:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Hello Huckleboy!

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 23:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I just melted and my inner-girlie squealed. CP, is that your canary-yellow Converse? If so, we're bartering...

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 00:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Uh, Nichole, that's me in the superfly sweatervest. Ryan, my bass player (the one playing the bass) is rockin' the yellow sneaks.

chris at bryan's (Bryan), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 00:03 (twenty-two years ago)

*ahem* Many pardons, CP....though you DO have that "literary yum" factor going on

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 00:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I just got a big package in the mail from Chris full of posters and handbills for tomorrow's show. It's all pretty cool.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha! Oh crap, that was supposed to arrive ages ago. Jeez.

OK, Huck, I got your instructions, they seem clear. We're hitting the road a little late because we were dog tired after our great time in Winnipeg... But yeah. We'll be there soon enough.

Call the cell if there's anything you need to add (although I probably won't have it on in the car until we get close to Regina, just leave a message). (Maybe I'll check in Brandon.) (Who knows.) (I am still a bit tired.) (Winnipeg has been great, Bryan and all the other Peggers were awesome.) (Rah rah rah.)

chris at bryan's (Bryan), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 16:16 (twenty-two years ago)

eta?

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 16:37 (twenty-two years ago)

They're loading up the car right now, we have a couple of quick stops to make, and they may do a teeny bit of dawdling along the way. I'd guess they'd be in Regina by 6 - 6:30. I would thing they'll contact you somewhere along the way, Huck.

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 16:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Give my regards to Rosser Ave.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 16:50 (twenty-two years ago)

do they think they're staying with me? I think they must. Do they know I live in bachelor suite?

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 16:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean, I'm not going to turn them out into the street or anything, but they know I'm going to be a terrible host. I mean, oh crap.
Here I've been a hermit, and now I'm going to have houseguests and I'm nervous.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Just brew up some Tim's and get a couple of bags of ketchup chips and all will be fine, Mr. Mann.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 17:01 (twenty-two years ago)

They bring their own candy. They should be low maintenance.

Jodi (Celerina), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, but do they make their own gravy?

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 17:29 (twenty-two years ago)

great, just what I need in a one room apt. a couple of sugar-addled musicians.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 17:30 (twenty-two years ago)

"My Dinner With Horace."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 18:12 (twenty-two years ago)

It's in your best interests to give them a patch of floor, Huck. They don't take up much room and they gave us not one but TWO packs of Kraft Caramels!!! You will have lots of fun.

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 18:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I actually have an incredible uncomfortable pull out couch type thing, so they'll at least be under the illusion of comfort. Unless they read this thread.
Maybe I should take tomorrow off work? Show them the sight.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 18:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Heh heh, I actually don't know if I have room to pull out the couch though!

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 18:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey Horace, when you see Our Man Piuma, could you ask him if he still had that package to send to me, or if it's already away in the mail?

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 18:39 (twenty-two years ago)

no. oh okay. but just this once. maybe we'll all make a trip to the post office, as I have something to mail as well.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 18:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Huck: Ryan slept on my hide-a-bed (which I previously thought was a torture device) and he said it was great. Chris slept on one of those self-inflating camp matresses and he didn't complain either. You should take tomorrow off if you can. Make sure you fill them up with the Old Dutch all-dressed! I filled them up with rye and gave them what ketchup chips I had on hand so they should be good until they reach Albert Street.

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 18:42 (twenty-two years ago)

there's gonna be another one of these tomorrow! who knew FAP could also be Fancy a Protest!

http://rubyarts.org/dunlop/001.jpg

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 18:53 (twenty-two years ago)

The Minor Thirds should play a free protest rock concert! For the people!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 18:58 (twenty-two years ago)

DOWN WITH ART! LONG LIVE ART!

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 19:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 19:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Careful now.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 19:02 (twenty-two years ago)

So I got the day off. So, uh, you won't hear from me until Friday or something.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 20:24 (twenty-two years ago)

You'd better put your thinking toque on, Huck. They're gonna want to go souvenir and toque shopping more than anything tomorrow.

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 20:26 (twenty-two years ago)

luckily, I live downtown, so nothing's handy.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 20:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I should take them to Riderville, I'm sure there's a bazillion Grey Cup junkernauts on for clearance!

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 20:29 (twenty-two years ago)

That's not that far from downtown if I remember correctly. Looks like they're finally gonna get to experience some real cold on Friday, none of this pussy +1 crap like we've had here!

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 20:33 (twenty-two years ago)

You should take them to all the cool warehouses along the Ring Road. Do they still have the refinery flame up there somewhere? How about the big Sears Warehouse? I miss all that.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 20:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, my brother and I took a drive around the refinery a couple of weeks ago. It was late at night and foggy. So it felt like we were on another planet. And not a friendly one.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 20:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Do you still have the guys in the muscle cars ripping up and down Albert Street for hours on end as soon as all of the stores close at 6pm?

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 20:44 (twenty-two years ago)

the stores close at 5:30 now.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 20:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Take them to that cemetery on Broad Street and later try to break into Taylor Field. THEY SHOULD DO A GUERILLA SHOW THERE!!! THEN THEY CAN SAY THEY'RE STADIUM ROCK!!!

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 20:46 (twenty-two years ago)

it's a field, not a stadium

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 20:47 (twenty-two years ago)

We already know they're field rock so I guess there's no point.

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 20:49 (twenty-two years ago)

what time did they leave?

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 20:54 (twenty-two years ago)

A bit after 11. They may take a little tour through Brandon but I know they're anxious to get there. We got into a bottle of rye last night and that kinda messed up any plans of getting them on the road by 9:30 like they were hoping. They'll probably not spend too much time in Brandon as Chris was not wanting to leave things too tight before the radio interview this evening (it was at 8, right?).

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 21:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I could use some time to get home and tidy up.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 21:02 (twenty-two years ago)

well, I'm gone.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 21:14 (twenty-two years ago)

No update! OH NO! Has Huck snapped and brutally murdered The Minor Thirds!!!???

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 4 December 2003 16:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think Huck has a computer at home and he took the day off to be with the boys. They're probably out looking for Dick Assman right now.

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 4 December 2003 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Hi. We're at the venue. I should get offline and go do soundcheck. The Perms seem to have left their drummer in Winnipeg. Ha! OK, maybe that's mean. They seem worried. Poor things.

Anyway, yes. We saw Brandon -- thanks for recommending that radio station, it was awesome!

Huck, we have no problem with the accomodations and are grateful that you've allowed us to crowd up your space and force you to be tour guide and all. It has all been mellow and nice. Everyone has been mellow and nice.

And we did see the refinery mabob, which was large and pollutive but pretty (sigh) -- Ryan and I have total love of these kinds of industrial structures.

Tonight we rock, tomorrow we hit MOOSE JAW!

dk, you better get your butt down here and say hi (or say hi in Moose Jaw), k?

Also: As mentioned on the other thread, prairie boys are generally pleasanter on the eyes than I had expected (I hadn't thought about it that much, actually).

c in regina, Friday, 5 December 2003 03:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, also we did see ac's hometown (though we didn't have time to stop, but we did see the sign).

I want to repeat (though I'm sure I'll say it again) that this tour has been wonderful (if completely exhausting) and I'm glad to have met you all and your fine highway system. ;-)

c in regina, Friday, 5 December 2003 03:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Yay! I am always very happy when people acknowledge my wee hometown! I would have been quite shocked and confused if you had bothered to stop. There's not THAT much to see.
Every time I think of the Perms I laugh and laugh and laugh.
It was nice to meet you both, too.

ac, Friday, 5 December 2003 04:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Chris and Ryan are still asleep. But the sun is nearly all the way up, so they'll be off to the Friendly City ASAP.
Was fun to have housguests.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 5 December 2003 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

How was the show? Did the Perms' drummer show up? Did they just invite some crazy guy off the street to play cowbell instead?

Bryan (Bryan), Friday, 5 December 2003 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

show was good. TM3 rocked the house! Rocked the whole damn province! The second band was totally weird exact midpoint between the White Stripes and Nickelback, with poetry interludes! The Perms performed sans drummer, but their trumpet player looked like a bodybuilder.
They didn't seem too impressed, since everybody had pretty much left by the time they hit the stage, since most of them were there for the second band, whose name is pretty convoluted and beyond my immediate recall.

Random hippy dude comes up and starts telling Chris how one of his lyrics is inaccurate (surprising it's not about SK, it's about the cellular structure of the euglenoid [sp??)) and then says, "so, you guys like the Grateful Dead?"

Also bizarro quartet of drugged-up hoodlums were all making out and staggering all over the place, but seemed to listen to TM3 nonetheless.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 5 December 2003 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)

HA!!! That's so funny that everyone left during the Perms! I was fully expecting that TM3 would've been up for last night's show and I'm glad it went well. Chris is a pretty powerful performer and can read an audience very well so it's no wonder they kicked everyone's ass.

Bryan (Bryan), Friday, 5 December 2003 15:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Reading the thread I'm almost sad that I left Brandon; if I was there I would have totally tried to get a show set up at the Punk Community Centre. That would have been so cool, even if no one but me and Cig showed up.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Friday, 5 December 2003 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I would've driven out. The Double Decker or Suds would've been better venues but I understand where you're coming from. I need to go and talk to Cig soon or I may lose my way in the world.

Bryan (Bryan), Friday, 5 December 2003 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

We have arrived. We looked at the Western Development Museum thingy and it was... it was a bunch of planes. It was kinda cool but still not the prairie museum I was hoping for (apparently THAT's what I should have done in Saskatoon, oh well!).

A handful of people after the show were really excited by our project, which was very nice, and we sold a few CDs and had actual conversations with people. People who I hope actually like the CDs and e-mail and whatnot.

Anyway, off to check out the tunnels and try to find the famous Peacock Collegiate.

chris jaw, Friday, 5 December 2003 19:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Chris, I'm soo happy for you.

(btw, I got to play in the G*ng W*z*rd show last night at an art gallery in Seattle as a mummy playing with the language master. sadly, one of the entourage got a little crazy (i.e. not Jake and not Br*an M*ller) and tried to roll a tom drum down the stairs but accidentally dropped it on a woman's head. she had to go to the hospital. show immediately cancelled and everyone was escorted out. very very sad day in the chapter of the g*ng w*z*rd. even though jake, br*an, and i had nothing involved in it, we still feel terribly TERRIBLY awful about what happened, and hope everyone is ok)

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 5 December 2003 19:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, no, that's terrible!

Sigh.

Anyway. A quick google search for "cellular structure euglena" shows hippie guy to have been wrongo bongo. But he has his weed to keep him warm.

chris jaw, Friday, 5 December 2003 19:39 (twenty-two years ago)

but he really like biology!

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 5 December 2003 19:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeeps, DB! :-(

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 5 December 2003 21:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I missed it last night. / What time should I come tonight? / Why are you going to Peacock Collegiate? / I watched Godspell there last weekend. / It was really great. / The Sunday after we saw the girl who was in it, the one who was all flirty and was wearing fishnet stockings in it. At Superstore. My mom said, 'Were you in Godspell?' She was surprised at being recognized and asked if we had enjoyed it. And my mom had been sort of badmouthing her performance after the show, saying that she had seemed sort of arrogant or something. / What time should I come tonight? / Isn't it cold? / Actually, it's warmer than it was last night. (Minus twenty four celcius! That's minus eleven American, I think.) / Moose Jaw.

d k (d k), Friday, 5 December 2003 22:20 (twenty-two years ago)

The Moose Jaw show went really, really oddly. Did you show up? If so, why didn't you say hi? Sigh.

OK, we fine a hotel and then we find our way home.

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 6 December 2003 04:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Argh road conditions seem to have suddenly gotten worse. Well, we'll get home eventually. Slow but sure wins the race.

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 6 December 2003 16:47 (twenty-two years ago)

d k shame on you for not going! you missed out.
weather was super terrible yesterday, not so much today.
hope you guys escape from SK ok.

HuckleberyyMann, Saturday, 6 December 2003 20:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Have a safe trip home, Chris.

JuliaA (j_bdules), Saturday, 6 December 2003 21:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I was there, though! But very shy and unable to say hi. It did seem to go kind of oddly, I guess. But it was good.

d k (d k), Saturday, 6 December 2003 23:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I made it home safe and sound. We stuck on the TC and saw Calgary, which must have added a zillion hours to our trip back, but left us with mostly good roads.

Argh, dk, I wish you had said hi. I was in a weird mood by the end of that show and was hoping you would prove to actually be there and say hi, it would have cheered me up a bit. Were you the guy who lingered around towards the very end?

Moose Jaw is actually a really nice town -- a bit touristy, but nice. It reminded me of Ashland, OR, without all the cultural stuff, though (and I guess only db will get what I mean), and some historical stuff in its stead.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 8 December 2003 12:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry d k, I misinterpreted an earlier thread. Still you shoulda said 'hi' at least.

Chris, I'm glad you made it through the weather. I don't know if the winds that hit Regina Friday night made it to Moose Jaw (which, as has been said, is in a different weather system, despite the fact that we can SEE Moose Jaw from here, if we stand on a chair), but if they did, congratulations, you have survived nearly the worst this part of the world will throw at you (only we have to deal with it for about three months solid).

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 8 December 2003 14:35 (twenty-two years ago)

We got just a taste of it when leaving MJ. I expected it to be bad all the way out to Swift Current, from what I'd heard on the news, but it really wasn't. Though I was told that the trip from Regina to MJ was terrible.

I am so exhausted. I can't believe I'm going to work today.

dk, I don't suppose you know if our picture was in the Saturday Times-Herald after all? We were told it would be (which seemed odd, since we had a huge picture in the Friday paper), but the paper comes out after noon and we were on the road by then.

I suppose I'll call them in a bit.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 8 December 2003 17:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't believe I'm AT work today, considering the shit hit the fan on Friday. But whatever. I guess now I NEED this shitty job. For now. Anyway, there's a very distinct possibility the the TM3 article will go down as the final thing I did for this crap-ass piece of bull-hooey.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 8 December 2003 17:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Ack! Did you start a shit-upon-fan thread? What's the story?

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 8 December 2003 18:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm actually sorta trying to not dwell on it too much. It's been a long time a-comin' and in the long run it's going to be a very positive thing. And I brought it on myself, well, I forced the issue. But I really needed a kick in the ass, as I was getting to comfortable on the second bottom rung here.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 8 December 2003 18:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 20:40 (twenty-two years ago)

where's all the wildlife from our nature walk?

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 20:43 (twenty-two years ago)

CP, think I flashed back to Children of the Corn with that last Saskatchewan photo. Evident you had a great time, though.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 20:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Huck, It's all on Ryan's camera still. Hang on, I think I have one photo of it...

Nichole, thankfully, it's not corn, it's wheat. Big diff.

We saw some wolves, but they, like all Canadians, were really friendly.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 20:45 (twenty-two years ago)

And they really would just not stop necking. Get a room! What are you, animals?!

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 20:46 (twenty-two years ago)

whatever, they were only doing it for the camera, goddamn Saska-show biz wolves.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 20:48 (twenty-two years ago)

What the photo doesn't show is the third wolf who was all left out and pouty.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 20:52 (twenty-two years ago)

three weeks pass...
You came right before it all burned down:

Historic Downtown Moose Jaw Left In Rubble.

Sort of sad. No one hurt. Still smoke over the city.
