JaXoN (JasonD), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 23:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Hi from my bedroom! My eyes are still dilated from the appointment with the opthalmologist I had almost two hours ago, so my vision's not the best, but I'll be damned if I miss a second of online time! *laughs*

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 15:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Hi from my room on a split shift before I go back to my old job! Until very late! when I'll be really tired! Hi!

Congrats on the new job, adam, hope it's all good.

Matt (Matt), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 16:36 (twenty-two years ago)

jaXon, I don't know that guy...yet. Do you really work at a hockey rink?

-- Antmusic78 (bergenrai...), November 26th, 2003.

do you work there too? i just found out that er1c doesn't work in the A.V. department but in the computer lab.

and no i don't work in a hockey rink, but instead i work at a really old warehouse type building with cheap non-insulating windows and no central heating. brrrrrrrrrrrrr

JaXoN (JasonD), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 17:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Congrats! Does this mean No More Temping Hell?

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 19:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Hunter do you work at Westminster library?!

Nay, I'm a student. This one is the University of Denver Law library. I wonder why it's called Westminster, but I don't see any explanations around.

Hunter (Hunter), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 20:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Congrats! Does this mean No More Temping Hell?

Thanks. Yes, for now. Although I will probably be temping inbetween semesters. And my last temp job was actually very pleasant!

Update: Well, today was very busy. But because we are in a position of some influence, many people bring us Thanksgiving offerings like cakes and bonbons. I like everyone I am working with, but I pretty much hate the music I have to listen to-see the ILM thread. The only decent CD I could find was Midnite Vultures, but that was soon thown out, for we had to listen to more Oi (oy...!).
The students are funny, especially the ones that have adopted the official "art student" pose- one guy had this wicked homemade haircut, like Andrew WK meets the K Records aesthetic.
Anyway, another thing is that I went to Chipotle for lunch, and the guy behind the counter eyeballed the staff pass hanging from my collar and loudly proclaimed "Of course you get a free drink with THAT". I am very special.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 23:29 (twenty-two years ago)

hi! and congrats etc etc...it is good job?

gaz (gaz), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 23:32 (twenty-two years ago)

In some senses of the word, I believe it to be "good", yes.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 23:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Not much ILX time, though.

:( ?

:) ?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 23:34 (twenty-two years ago)

you needed a break anyway! you must've felt exhausted... ;-)

gaz (gaz), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 23:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh... HI, nordic!

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 23:46 (twenty-two years ago)

No no, I was just hitting my stride!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 23:49 (twenty-two years ago)

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 23:49 (twenty-two years ago)

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 23:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I wish ILX paid by the post.

mmm, how d'you mean? ...it'd be ILX that does the paying??
(um, yum, that'd cool:)

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 23:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Hi from my home office (i.e., my living room)!

j.lu (j.lu), Thursday, 27 November 2003 00:31 (twenty-two years ago)

one month passes...
I realize the horrible irony in declaring the honeymoon period to be over so swiftly, but such seems to be the way with me and employment. Despite nothing in the way of understanding, assurances, or even benefits from the management, I still find myself being expected to commit to whatever is asked of me and being given only a moment's notice to do so with little care for any other demands on my time. Which wouldn't be SO irritating were it not for the fact that my timesheets/payslips for last month have been lost and I still remain unpaid for quite a great deal of hard work well after the due date.

Now if anyone wants me, I'll be sraypainted silver and breakdancing for dimes in Union Square...

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 9 January 2004 19:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Yesterday, my mother in-law packed up the condo she gets for her job, drove over to her office in the middle of the night, dropped the keys and a letter of resignation through the mailbox and drove straight out of town (trust me, she was MORE than justified in doing this). She's so cool.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 9 January 2004 19:50 (twenty-two years ago)

sorry to hear that dude, hope things improve sharpish.

stevem (blueski), Friday, 9 January 2004 19:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh it's okay. I like a little drama sometimes, I guess it's in my blood.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 9 January 2004 19:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Your mother-in-law is awesome. Is she going to be an interstate trucker now, where she lives by the rule of the road and gets into all sorts of zany adventures with her pet lizard named Donkey, who smokes a cigar?

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 9 January 2004 19:54 (twenty-two years ago)

man, that sucks! I just found out I lost a big job I was supposed to have lined up for this month that would've made everything easier, now I am miserable. YOU ARE NEVER ALONE

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 9 January 2004 19:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Commiserations, s1ocki.

Is there a "Freelance Venture Capital For Dummies"? I only have a vague idea what venture capitalism (ADventure Capitalism!!!!)is, but I think I'd be really good at it....

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 9 January 2004 20:02 (twenty-two years ago)

"Freelance Venture Capital for Dummies: send money now for second installment"

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 9 January 2004 20:07 (twenty-two years ago)

two months pass...
/me waves

i'm the fourth london new-jobber that Mike mentioned in Barry's birthday Fap thread. second day today and hopefully it won't be an 11 hour marathon like yesterday. yesterday was kinda fun though, first day in new office, an hour or so assembling ikea tables without instructions, trips to argos to buy kettle and cutlery and 9 Bright Mugs and to safeways for tea and coffee and milk and sugar. felt very christmassy when the new pcs turned up (black, 3GHz, 1G ram, 18" flatscreen monitors, way overspecced...) and a lot like december 27th a couple of hours later waiting for win2000 / service pack 4 / windows updates to install...

according to job description i am 'Senior Employee', number 8 of 8 so far, all people i've either worked with or worked for in the past. am hoping to refine my role later - maybe 'Senior Employee (Linux and Milk)' (i live about 15 minutes away, the other side of cherry-blossomed brackenbury village, so i've been tasked with buying the daily pints on my way in until we arrange for a real milkman to do it)

hope you other three are also doing ok.

andy

koogs (koogs), Friday, 19 March 2004 15:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Hurrah, glad the new employment is good.

I am technically in a new job, but since I've merely been taken on permanently from a few months' temping, it's v little shakes.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Friday, 19 March 2004 16:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Yay! Smashing larks there Andy!

And condolences to Liz :)

Sarah (starry), Friday, 19 March 2004 16:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't wanna the exact address on but let's just say I'm now very familiar with the headstones in the Trinity Church graveyard (hence Alexander Hamilton being spit on).

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 18:54 (twenty-one years ago)

HOLY SHIT I ATE AT BURRITOVILLE TODAY!

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 19:01 (twenty-one years ago)

THE ONE ON NASSAU, THAT IS.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 19:02 (twenty-one years ago)

well. i was there at NOON. eating a mega soy burrito.

yes, nassau. not chambers.

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 19:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I was there around 1:30, Border with a Coke (and free chips/salsa).

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 19:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Burritoville sounds great. Emeryville would appear to be something of a culinary wasteland, as well as an actual and literal wasteland. There is IKEA. And Best Buy.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 19:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Hi from Miami. I can't believe it's raining here!!!

Vicky (Vicky), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 19:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Ooooooh, it's like 80 here.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 19:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I bought a hi-tech fan yesterday. I felt really grown up.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 19:08 (twenty-one years ago)

It's hot and humid, just chucking it down at the same time!

Vicky (Vicky), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 19:09 (twenty-one years ago)

If you talk into it, do you sound like Darth Vader?

NA (Nick A.), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 19:10 (twenty-one years ago)

...yes!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 19:11 (twenty-one years ago)

what are they making you do today????? the first days at a new job are wonderful because nothing is ever set up and you're getting paid to sit at an empty desk

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 19:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Today is fun. Thank god they use Macs!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 19:48 (twenty-one years ago)

you should install nicotine on all their workstations

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 20:18 (twenty-one years ago)

There's only 5 of us.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 20:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Also - "workstation" is such a corporate term. Why don't you just say "computer"?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 20:22 (twenty-one years ago)

bcuz i am a corporate whore

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 20:23 (twenty-one years ago)

technically a workstation is a type of computer, right? Most people use the term wrong.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 20:23 (twenty-one years ago)

It is?

I should also add that this job is, in its own way, hilarious.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 20:28 (twenty-one years ago)

And it looks like I may be going on a short trip to Delaware, of all places. Hahahahaha!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 20:30 (twenty-one years ago)

"See America Right"

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 20:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I still think it would behoove you to tell us WHAT EXACTLY THE JOB IS etc. Or provide a mysterious link to descriptive text or something.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 20:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I remember when Sun made hardware, they made workstations, which were faster than PCs at the time (but with less applications).

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 20:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned, I am working for a jury consultancy that deals with a number of high-profile cases (including the one with the guy who may or may not have done the thing, but probably did).

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 20:33 (twenty-one years ago)

It's the sort of workplace where someone slams down the phone and shouts "I have just found THE perfect black woman!" and everyone cheers.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 20:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Though I may be exaggerating just a bit.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 20:36 (twenty-one years ago)

i was going to post a picture of beyonce here but then decided not to. but thought I'd metion it anyway.

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 20:38 (twenty-one years ago)

small offices are kind of creepy. expect to get to know everything about everyone you work with.

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 20:39 (twenty-one years ago)

We have a roof deck where you can watch the traffic going onto the Bay Bridge.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 20:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Does Spiderman ever swing by the roof deck when he's in town?

Michael White (Hereward), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 20:53 (twenty-one years ago)

He lives in NYC, everybody knows that.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 20:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned, I am working for a jury consultancy that deals with a number of high-profile cases (including the one with the guy who may or may not have done
the thing, but probably did).

Oh yeah, that thing. And the deal.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 21:07 (twenty-one years ago)

this is going well on day 3

last night i was here working on some stuff and the new boss sees "the wall street journal guide to information graphics" on my desk (i'm nesting) and she's like "oh i forgot we're gonna have you doing that kind of stuff, i have something i should give you"

and she goes back to her office and brings over FOUR Tufte books--Visual Display of Quantitative Info, Envisioning Information, Beautiful Evidence & Visual Explanations

"i could never make it past a few pages of those, you have fun with them"

O_O

does it come with any perks or a raise or something? I'd assume the hours will be monstrous.

fwiw i think you get all those tufte books at once if you go to one of his things, no one reads them and they move as a package deal.

Ask around quietly and discreetly before you make that jump, hoosteen. If you decide to not get poached upstairs voluntarily, maybe tell them:

  • you think the regional project is a very good and exciting one and worthy of your best efforts
  • working on it will give you a chance to learn the organization and your co-workers better
  • but you will gladly work in any capacity they ask you to, and
  • you feel honored by the request so early on in your tenure there
...you know, the usual baboon troop grooming activity.

the perks such as they are will be like "hobnobbing directly with the people who run the whole show"

and frankly? we're gonna win. we were gonna win. so i'm being invited to join a winning team staffed by all the big shots.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 12 March 2015 21:43 (ten years ago)

i was told "it's *my* vision that after this campaign ends you'll be reassigned to the campaign we hired you for--but to be honest, the folks you'll be working with, if they're happy with how you do, i can't tell you where they'll want to put you."

and then i traded numbers with her boss so we can do morning update calls

gulp

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 12 March 2015 21:45 (ten years ago)
