@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 27 November 2003 17:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Well what? Make sense man!!

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 27 November 2003 17:47 (twenty-one years ago)

God, sometimes* ILE is** nothing more than comedians trying out nonsense-words to see if they provoke laughter. Aren't there better ways of doing this?

*all the time

**or, just as likely, I'm missing some hilarious pop culture reference. In which case, go on, laugh at the spaz.

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 27 November 2003 17:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry Nordy, nothing to do with you, just in a bad mood.

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 27 November 2003 17:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Um, it's a new movie. I want to see it. Directed by Terry Zwigoff, director of Crumb and Ghost World, and starring Billy Bob Thornton.

NA (Nick A.), Thursday, 27 November 2003 17:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Baz the spaz.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Thursday, 27 November 2003 17:50 (twenty-one years ago)

It's the first film I've looked forward to seeing in AGES. But the preview makes it look quite bad -- and the screenwriters wrote Cats & Dogs.

But, in the Christmas spirit, my favourite line from Ghost World.

Rebecca: This is so bad it's almost good.
Enid: This is so bad it's gone past good and back to bad again.

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Thursday, 27 November 2003 17:51 (twenty-one years ago)

BERNIE MAC!

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 27 November 2003 17:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Bad Santa! Creepy poster!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 27 November 2003 17:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Every review I've heard/read of it has been overwhelmingly positive.

NA (Nick A.), Thursday, 27 November 2003 17:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry Nordy, nothing to do with you, just in a bad mood.

Easy, Mark! Yes, it is an example of "the filmic arts", on general release in the US as of today. It looks quite bad, but some of the reviews has been surprising.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 27 November 2003 17:53 (twenty-one years ago)

damn, santa.

possible m (mandinina), Thursday, 27 November 2003 17:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I was a bad Santa once. I did a brilliant expose on the seemy underbelly of mall Santas.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 27 November 2003 17:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually it was a moving human interest story with myself as the STAR I was born to be!

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 27 November 2003 17:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, at least now you know some of the things I hate about ILE when I've got my period.

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 27 November 2003 17:59 (twenty-one years ago)

*runs away from thread*

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 27 November 2003 18:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmmm, I will reserve judgement until I see a trailer.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 27 November 2003 18:02 (twenty-one years ago)

is that some kind of Billy Bob Thornton/White Trash joke, jel?

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 27 November 2003 18:06 (twenty-one years ago)

will probably be better than "TimeLine", which was viewed today..

Jeremy the Kingfish (Kingfish), Friday, 28 November 2003 22:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Ed (dali), Saturday, 29 November 2003 00:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Amazing. Like a comedic version of Bad Lieutenant - as in, the plot of the movie is right there in the title, and seldom veers from said plot (or lack therof) - BillyBob is terrific (tho I must admit I have sat through each of his movies, including the abhorrent Pushing Tin - I'm a big fan) and the movie is definitely worth seeing. I'm already psyched for the DVD!

roger adultery (roger adultery), Saturday, 29 November 2003 11:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Best line in Ghostworld = "He'd better be careful he doens't get AIDS when he date-rapes her." (Said of football captain and prom queen, I think.)

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 29 November 2003 11:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I went to see it today, tanked up on coffee and with no expectations to speak of, laughed like an idiot for at least the first 45 minutes. Do I even need to say it's a one-joke movie? Billy Bob gives good cuss, Bernie Mac is still not as funny as I expect him to be - his best face (the surly yet dumbstruck one) is still good, but he doesn't deliver on it. John Ritter has a "nice" little turn. RIP. A really odd choice for local hero Terry Zwigoff, this film has the feel of an "inbetweener", but is still well worth the matinee price I paid.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Sunday, 30 November 2003 06:44 (twenty-one years ago)

i hear it's very funny

cinniblount (James Blount), Sunday, 30 November 2003 06:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I hear it's funny too but I'm skeptical, perhaps because I hated Ghost World

s1utsky (slutsky), Sunday, 30 November 2003 06:50 (twenty-one years ago)

i was not a big ghost world the movie fan either

cinniblount (James Blount), Sunday, 30 November 2003 06:52 (twenty-one years ago)

that is because you hate fun

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Sunday, 30 November 2003 06:53 (twenty-one years ago)

It is nothing like Ghost World (which I love).

I mean crumb was good

s1utsky (slutsky), Sunday, 30 November 2003 06:55 (twenty-one years ago)

See that poster upthread? Stare at it for ten seconds, then decide if you want to see the film. It's a pretty accurate advertisement for the movie.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Sunday, 30 November 2003 06:59 (twenty-one years ago)

see, it's the kid that worries me

s1utsky (slutsky), Sunday, 30 November 2003 07:00 (twenty-one years ago)

that poster is hilarious, i'm actually incredulous that the movie could possibly live up to it

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Sunday, 30 November 2003 07:00 (twenty-one years ago)

but the kid

s1utsky (slutsky), Sunday, 30 November 2003 07:01 (twenty-one years ago)

that said, the kid never makes that expression throughout the entire movie. I warmed to the kid, but no, he wasn't initially all that welcome.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Sunday, 30 November 2003 07:01 (twenty-one years ago)

but stare into that elf's face. Therein lies the key.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Sunday, 30 November 2003 07:02 (twenty-one years ago)

The kid ruined the trailer for me.

jaymc (jaymc), Sunday, 30 November 2003 08:07 (twenty-one years ago)

how much gilmore girl is in this?

cinniblount (James Blount), Sunday, 30 November 2003 08:40 (twenty-one years ago)

her not being in the poster is an ominous sign

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Sunday, 30 November 2003 09:02 (twenty-one years ago)

i mean, they put the kid in and not lauren graham? and they want people to come see this?

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Sunday, 30 November 2003 09:02 (twenty-one years ago)

s1utsky (slutsky), Sunday, 30 November 2003 17:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I took Adam's advice, I wanna see this film!!!

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 30 November 2003 18:10 (twenty-one years ago)

There's something about a film that goes out of its way to be utterly appalling that makes me want to see it in the worst way. Bad Santa is a demonstration of this. Whoever greenlighted this is a genius, and all I've seen is the trailer.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 04:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw it at a matinee, and four elderly people walked about halfway through - I guess they were expecting The Santa Clause - missing the redemption. I like how Zwigoff is the anti-Alexander Payne, it would be too easy to be misanthropic with the characters and topics he dealt with.

The ending isn't as bad as I'd been led to believe, and for once the really-dark ending wouldn't have satisfied me.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 05:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yeah I saw this in Chicago, it wasn't as funny as I expected. But it was ok.

NA (Nick A.), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 14:53 (twenty-one years ago)

There's something about a film that goes out of its way to be utterly appalling that makes me want to see it in the worst way.

I really, really liked the black comedy aspect. So much so I resented the redemption and rehumanization aspect.

billy bob's performance in this movie kind of reminds me of jeff bridges in the big lebowski, this sort of don't-blink absurdist deadpan character study. i love that!

four weeks pass...
Seen this! We sat back and watched it on Christmas eve, and I nearly wet myself. I wasn't expecting the language to be quite as 'strong' - I'm glad we didn't watch it with Kevs parents as was our original intention.

"Are you fucking with me kid?"

The scene with the draughts was hilarious. No, I didn't get the talking walnut part either, and I didn't get what the guy in the bar/car park was all about. "I am not gay."

Rumpty Pum pum pum, Tuesday, 28 December 2004 11:56 (twenty years ago)

I watched with my parents on Xmas eve! They loved it!

Steely Zan (AaronHz), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 12:16 (twenty years ago)

There really is something genius about this movie. It's not just funny -- how many movies have a groin-punching gag that actually works? -- it's sad and desperate and pathetic and makes you never want to drink again. It's weirdly touching.

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Thursday, 30 December 2004 05:20 (twenty years ago)

Michael White (Hereward), Thursday, 30 December 2004 06:07 (twenty years ago)

Best moment:

"You need years and years of therapy."

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Thursday, 30 December 2004 07:54 (twenty years ago)

I loved this movie. so goddamn sappy and good, it made my tummy warm and tickley.

Nellie (nellskies), Thursday, 30 December 2004 12:09 (twenty years ago)

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 30 December 2004 16:18 (twenty years ago)

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 30 December 2004 16:34 (twenty years ago)

I agree -- a classic already. I'll watch it every year now.

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Thursday, 30 December 2004 16:36 (twenty years ago)

Jesus christ yr all insane.

This is one of the best movies ever, certainly one of the best of the last 5 years. Those sequences with Bernie Mac and John Ritter are pure genius. I can't believe all these "eh its pretty funny I guess" nonsense. Easily better than Ghost World. There is not a wasted line in the film, all the acting is top notch, story is from the Coen bros. so you know its good.

deej.. (deej..), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 09:28 (nineteen years ago)

I'm young and should probably know better.

F.R.I.E.N.D. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 16:17 (nineteen years ago)

I liked Ghost World. I also liked The Man Who Wasn't There a lot. Intolerable Cruelty is pretty meh though (although the Coen's have made worse, I guess.) Bad Santa is better than all three though obv by a considerable margin.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 16:18 (nineteen years ago)

I like Ghost World. I don't like the Man Who Wasn't There. I skipped Intolerable Cruelty. Yes Bad Santa is better than those by a lot.

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 16:57 (nineteen years ago)

I like Man Who Wasn't There quite a bit. Intolerable Cruelty I expected to hate, but it was pretty good. Bad Santa is good too.

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 18:10 (nineteen years ago)

Ghost World: The Movie is a lot weaker than the comic unfortunately.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 18:14 (nineteen years ago)

Mostly because Steve Buscemi's character adds basically nothing to the original and his "story" detracts from the girl's interactions.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 18:16 (nineteen years ago)

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 18:22 (nineteen years ago)

F.R.I.E.N.D. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 18:26 (nineteen years ago)

yeah that was the only good part of the movie. where you see another movie.

wakka-wakka! :)

F.R.I.E.N.D. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 18:30 (nineteen years ago)

Ghost World the movie paled in comparison to the comic, but I didn't hate it or anything.

The Man Who Wasn't There is quite underrated and stunning to look at (Roger Deakins, yo), especially compared to the slapped-together and not-all-that-funny O Brother Where Art Thou, if we're talking about 21st-century Coen. I skipped Intolerable Cruelty.

I still haven't seen Bad Santa. The trailer made me think I would hate it.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 18:33 (nineteen years ago)

!?!?!

Any trailer with Billy Bob Thorton is good.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 18:38 (nineteen years ago)

Exceptions to this include trailers which also include John Cusack.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 18:38 (nineteen years ago)

I don't know the original GW, so I can't judge. I liked the Steve B character-it was basically a comic book guy inserting himself into a comic book world. I liked the weird vibe at his party, especially the bit where David Cross gets up to make his move and says "watch, listen and learn, Padre." And yeah, I liked the Mohamed Rafi number at the beginning.

Why did you think you would hate BS, jaymc? I was a little worried going in, but I ended up liking it.

k/l (Ken L), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 18:39 (nineteen years ago)

I never read the Ghost World comic, and loved the movie. I'll stick with the movie, then. Liked Bad Santa a lot. I watch it once a year at x-mas. It's my own little It's a Wonderful Life tradition, I guess.

recovering optimist (Royal Bed Bouncer), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 18:58 (nineteen years ago)

I still haven't seen Bad Santa. The trailer made me think I would hate it.

Its one of the worst marketing disasters in history!* Ask anyone who saw it opening weekend how many kids were in the audience (even though its rated R!)

I like Man Who Wasn't There a lot, although I haven't seen it in awhile. Obv. the Coen bros. thing isn't foolproof though. (I've never seen interolerable cruelty, never much liked o brother though)

*intentional hyperbole

Dan (Hahaha) Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 5 December 2005 16:44 (nineteen years ago)

Kid: I was thinking I wanted a purple stuffed elephant, not pink. But now I changed my mind.
Willie: Yeah? What?
Kid: Now I don't want an elephant at all. I want a gorilla named Davy for beating up the skateboard kids who pull on my underwear. And he can take his orders from the talking walnut, so it won't be my bad thing.
[Santa looks at the kid in confusion]
Willie: Jesus, kid. When I was your age, I didn't need no fucking gorilla. And I wasn't as big as one of your legs. Four kids beat me up one time and I went crying home to my daddy. You know what he did?
Kid: He made it all better?
Willie: No, he kicked my ass. You know why?
Kid: Because you went to the bathroom on mommy's dishes?
Willie: What the fuck? No!

mike h. (mike h.), Friday, 9 December 2005 19:54 (nineteen years ago)

Is there something wrong with me that I don't think this movie is totally amazing? It's good, I love Billy Bob and Lauren Graham is hot, but it just isn't as funny as it seems it should be. Start making fun of me now.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 9 December 2005 19:56 (nineteen years ago)

I finally saw this. This flick is great. the whole Bill-Murray-Don't-give-a-fuck aspect is tops. Rodney King jokes, (multiple) buttfucking jokes, Lauren Graham is hot, Lauren Tom as asian Jackee(including hair). And several hundred profanities in a Christmas movie.

kingfish trampycakes (kingfish 2.0), Monday, 12 December 2005 05:40 (nineteen years ago)

See that poster upthread? It's a pretty accurate advertisement for the movie.

I don't think it is. That makes it look like some kind of cheap-laugh bad taste film;but the movie itself is beyond classic, I think this is one of my favorite films of the past few years. the lighting is excellent for one thing. the performances (mainly Thornton and the Kid) are fucking astounding.

Also, does anyone have proof that the happy ending was studio-enforced? I think it would have been a cheat to have killed him. I know the Cohens worked on the screenplay, so maybe they changed it; if they did, it was for the better.

Speaking of script changes, the kid's present must have been planned for some kind of wild scene, considering what it resembles and what's going on when he gives it to Billy Bob

To be a pretentious ass about a movie like Bad Santa, I loved the way it had Looney Tunes classical music during all the fight scenes. The fucking ANVIL CHORUS.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 20:57 (nineteen years ago)

making people sit through a blatantly unfunny thing yet again to prove a point wins no one any battles. In Soviet Russia, jokes tell 30 year olds! etc.

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 29 December 2005 06:38 (nineteen years ago)

"Fraggle stick car."

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Friday, 30 December 2005 03:53 (nineteen years ago)

Saw it for the first time yesterday and it's indeed amazing. The haggling! The donkey uppercut! Kicking each other in the nuts in the boxing ring! The shootout in the mall (exploding nativity figures)... Lauren Graham! Just about everything in this movie rules.

StanM (StanM), Friday, 30 December 2005 07:49 (nineteen years ago)

Kicking each other in the nuts in the boxing ring!

One of my favorite bits, precisely because it sounds like every other kicked-in-the-nuts scene ever on paper, but they pull it off. That's some comic rope-a-dope right there.

three months pass...
I'm still confused by the Coen's reputation for bad writing?
Saw Man who wasn't there again and I still think it's pretty great.
And although someone made a sarcastic comment about how the story wasn't what was good about bad santa, i um disagree; although I'm sure a fair number of adlibs added to the enjoyment it seemed very well scripted to me.

i've only seen 'badder santa' though, not the director's cut. this will be awesome.

Mark Clemente, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 19:11 (seventeen years ago)

Aw man, I like the opening voiceover! I can see how it would prob. be just fine without it, though.

-are you off your meds?
-yes...

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Wednesday, 26 December 2007 12:14 (seventeen years ago)

Anything that results in Santa talking less about his dad would seem to me to be to the detriment of the movie. Badder Santa is a little fatty actually (some of the cuts were good cuts) but it's hard to complain.

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 26 December 2007 14:18 (seventeen years ago)

i love this movie. i cant imagine the director's cut being better but that's mostly cuz zwigoff's other non-doc stuff is so horrible that BS seems like some unreproducible beautiful freak accident.

s1ocki, Wednesday, 26 December 2007 15:27 (seventeen years ago)

I blame Clowes much much more the failures of GW and ASC than I do Zwigoff. Talk about not knowing where your strengths lie, sheesh.

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 26 December 2007 16:04 (seventeen years ago)

ASC was one of the worst movies i've ever seen.

s1ocki, Wednesday, 26 December 2007 16:05 (seventeen years ago)

You haven't seen very many bad movies, then! I thought Ghost World was passable but Bad Santa is pretty much the one he's not going to top.

deej, Wednesday, 26 December 2007 20:43 (seventeen years ago)

wanko ergo sum, Wednesday, 26 December 2007 21:12 (seventeen years ago)

They should change the name of Comedy Central to BAD SANTA CHANNEL because every time I've turned it on over the last couple days this movie has been playing. Not complainin'.

nickalicious, Wednesday, 26 December 2007 21:31 (seventeen years ago)

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Thursday, 27 December 2007 12:00 (seventeen years ago)

it's been a while since I saw the theatrical cut, but the director's cut seems to have just made it less funny

milo z, Saturday, 5 January 2008 04:52 (seventeen years ago)

why do people think ghost world was horrible?

J.D., Saturday, 5 January 2008 05:17 (seventeen years ago)

"all the audience gets are a series of vulgar sight gags and verbal grenades that exist for no other purpose than to "shock and disgust" the "bourgeois sensibility" of "hapless multiplex sheep." The film represents a significant misstep for everyone involved- from actors Billy Bob Thornton and Bernie Mac to listed co-producers Joel and Ethan Coen. Everyone except director Terry Zwigoff that is, who now gets to unleash his hateful form of sexual dysfunction on crowds outside the art-house circuit. It may not be a lump of coal, but it certainly is a lump of something."

"It would be one thing if Bad Santa was something more than just a group of sick jokes strung along. If this were a commentary on the bad thoughts of the holiday season or this allowed us some insight to the characters and their sick behavior, then that would be something else. Why does Willie get a kick out of wearing his Santa outfit while having sex? Was there some sort of repression deep from childhood still following him around? And look at Bob the mall manager. Is there something about his sex life that seems to charge him up when he hears about Willie's exploits? Is there a connection between Gin's constipation and how he handles sexual deviance?"

No!

I want that line about the disches to have been impromptu, or at least BThornton didn't know it was there until.

It's now a yearly custom. This, and the Polar Express.

The kids would love it, but I'd only have to explain why the lady wouldn't be able to go to the toilet for a week.

http://www.ifc.com/news/2011/06/match-cuts-bad-santa.php

caek, Friday, 24 June 2011 16:14 (fourteen years ago)

Wherever Zwigoff can make things darker, he does. A particularly good example comes during (SPOILER ALERT!) Bernie Mac's death scene. In the Theatrical Cut, Marcus's wife kills Mac's Gin by running him over with their van. in the Unrated Cut, the van doesn't quite do the job, so Marcus finishes him off by zapping his head with some jumper cables. In Zwigoff's version, that doesn't do it either, so Marcus drags a moaning, bleeding Gin behind the van, where his wife backs over his head. The van bounces with an enormous thud and Zwigoff cuts to a bubblegum balloon exploding all over a crying kid's face. Merry Christmas!

what is it with Zwigoff and violence, he is really awful at it

Haven't seen it, but I can imagine the opening working better without narration. If I'd seen the DC without seeing the OG, notes of progress or victory at the end might seem like a betrayal, but I'm happy with the tiny fragments of happiness these horrible broken ppl have earned by the end.

No idea what's in "Badder Santa" btw

( ͡° ͜ʖ͡°) (sic), Tuesday, 11 December 2012 00:44 (twelve years ago)

doesn't the DC not have the boxing scene? it's cheap laughs, but mighty ones

( ͡° ͜ʖ͡°) (sic), Tuesday, 11 December 2012 00:44 (twelve years ago)

I think it may omit that

It does, on the other hand, have an extended Bernie Mac death scene, I think

mh, Tuesday, 11 December 2012 00:46 (twelve years ago)

isnt there also a scene at the beginning w/ the stripper added where he says she smells like a bum's nutsack

D-40, Tuesday, 11 December 2012 00:47 (twelve years ago)

Yeah, a few things Iike that. Maybe I'll get the other two versions and watch them all.

mh, Tuesday, 11 December 2012 01:08 (twelve years ago)

in the DC at the end instead of the bike scene, the kid just washes billy bob's blood off the front steps

乒乓, Tuesday, 11 December 2012 01:22 (twelve years ago)

Director's cut<<<<<theatrical version. Rhythm is thrown off, extra scenes conspicuously extraneous.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 11 December 2012 01:22 (twelve years ago)

Oh, wait, there are three versions: theatrical, unrated "Badder Santa" (studio cash grab) and Director's Cut, which runs a hair shorter than theatrical, and which I have not yet seen!

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 11 December 2012 01:25 (twelve years ago)

The 99-minute 'Badder Santa' was assembled by the studio without any input from the director. The 88-minute 'Director's Cut' was assembled and approved by Zwigoff.

The unrated cut of 'Bad Santa' includes these changes:
There's an alternate take of Willie leaving the mall at the start of the movie with a more vulgar exchange with the security guard.
There's a whole new subplot at the beginning of the movie with Willie stealing a car and robbing someone's house, and then going to a strip club and bringing a stripper home before hearing the phone message telling him it's that time of year again.
There is more footage of Willie having sex in the dressing room.
The pinball scene with the underage girl is extended with more thrusting.
There's more swearing and berating in the food court scene.
There's some more footage of Willie yelling at The Kid after losing a game of checkers.
The jacuzzi sex scene is slightly longer.
The scene with Willie confronting a security guard outside the mall is extended.
A small extension of the Granny Death scene.
An extended car death scene.
A longer shoot out at the mall

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 11 December 2012 01:25 (twelve years ago)

Huh. Reading the Ebert review revealed he does not like "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre."

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 11 December 2012 01:29 (twelve years ago)

that description is infuriating, which one is the "unrated cut", badder santa or the director's cut??

Author ~ Coach ~ Goddess (s1ocki), Tuesday, 11 December 2012 01:30 (twelve years ago)

there are 3

乒乓, Tuesday, 11 December 2012 01:31 (twelve years ago)

I think all that listed shit is in the unrated cut, "Badder Santa."

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 11 December 2012 01:32 (twelve years ago)

That long list is Badder Santa. Actual director's cut is shorter and a bit more vicious.

mh, Tuesday, 11 December 2012 01:51 (twelve years ago)

mh, Tuesday, 11 December 2012 01:54 (twelve years ago)

They are probably right that theatrical cut is best. Zwigoff tends to pretty godawful dark and unfunny on his own devices.

mh, Tuesday, 11 December 2012 01:56 (twelve years ago)

the directors cut removes the scene where the kid kicks the midget in the balls

caek, Tuesday, 11 December 2012 01:58 (twelve years ago)

ball-kicking is kind of too "America's Funniest home videos" for Zwigoff, even if it's a comedy staple

mh, Tuesday, 11 December 2012 02:30 (twelve years ago)

he sucks

caek, Tuesday, 11 December 2012 02:32 (twelve years ago)

I wouldn't go that far. I just think he can't rein in his worst instincts, which is to remove all comedy that isn't dark hatred of the human spirit

Still love that the Coen bros were uncredited Bad Santa script doctors

mh, Tuesday, 11 December 2012 02:37 (twelve years ago)

"dark hatred of the human spirit"

are you talking about the 'blueshammer' scene in ghost world?

Philip Nunez, Tuesday, 11 December 2012 02:39 (twelve years ago)

More his hate of comedy staples and thinking that irredeemability is a better movie idea than sarcasm. See Art School Confidential, really. Or don't, if you like laughs.

mh, Tuesday, 11 December 2012 02:41 (twelve years ago)

i'd weigh in that the original had a lot of weird factors that contributed to its existence

the Coen brothers doing uncredited script doctoring, Zwigoff directing but the editing keeping it light (the director's cut is somehow darker and less funny), Cloris Leachman as the senile grandmother....

yeah, no high hopes here, but i will watch it
