Degrassi: The Next Generation

Recently I have started watching the lastest reincarnation of Degrassi. It has quickly become my 2nd favorite TV show, behind the Simpsons of course.

Dante-Cubed (Sean3), Thursday, 27 November 2003 18:48 (twenty-two years ago)

The scene with Joey, Snake, and Wheels at the bowling alley where they all have shaved heads made me feel OLD.

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Thursday, 27 November 2003 19:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Manny is HOT!

Dante-Cubed (Sean3), Thursday, 27 November 2003 19:44 (twenty-two years ago)

That episode with Joey redoing the Zits made me feel VERY old. But the show, the show is good, no? I mean, it's not GOOD, but it's impossible to turn off, unlike most (any?) Canadian TV.

Go forth Degrassi wannabes!

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Friday, 28 November 2003 00:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Anyone seen that video of a bunch of nerds roleplaying where one screams "lightningbolt! lightningbolt!" as he throws nerf darts at somebody dressed like a knobbly giant thing? It's brilliant.

Andrew (enneff), Friday, 28 November 2003 01:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Why does that sound so very very wrong. Crack... slash... argh.

Did anybody watch that crap? It was supposed to be some heart-warming homage to The Breakfast Club, but it came off like filler, a way to get from one episode (or in Jimmy's case, relationship) to the next. And the Molly Ringwald character should have been Paige! But then Jimmy couldn't have kissed her, I guess. Hazel is boring! MORE EMMA!!

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Saturday, 12 June 2004 12:07 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, well, this has never happened before, but the channel that Degrassi is on has for some reason decided not to work when there are new episodes on omgwtf. WHAT IS HAPPENING IN DEGRASSI LAND !!!@221!!@!???

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 02:32 (twenty-one years ago)

whenever I see it on I watch for a few minutes, hoping to see some familiar faces from the original series but never do, and therefore turn it off. My friend told me that there are in fact some original cast members on the new series. Which ones?

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 02:36 (twenty-one years ago)

the parents

are 'friends' electricsound? (electricsound), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 02:38 (twenty-one years ago)

The old people. The computer science teacher/stepdad going through Chemo is Snake. His wife is Spike.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 02:42 (twenty-one years ago)

oh yeah, Snake and somebody have a kid or something? I didn't watch it enough to know who "the parents" are.

xpost Snake and Spike! Get out! Is she still called Spike?

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 02:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Yep, sometimes! They have a baby together, but Emma(who Spike was pregnant with in High School)'s dad (I can't recall his name right now, but he's an original cast-er) is in some mental institution or rehabilitation place after having some kind of head trauma omgwtf

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 02:49 (twenty-one years ago)

oh man wtf was his name? Shane!!! Right? He OD'd at some concert and came back to school in a wheel chair and almost catatonic.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 02:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes! Emma recently went to discover him and was all shocked. Then Spike went into labor after Shane broke into her house and wouldn't leave after escaping from his...whatever it is.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 02:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I knew that Shane fella was trouble. What with the going to rock n roll shows and shooting dope. I'm glad that Spike finally has an anchor in her life in the form of Snake.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 02:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Snake is awesome. When he and Spike finally got together, it was a beautiful merging of my three favorite characters on Degrassi into one loving, awesome family.

Oh my god, I'm that guy.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 03:02 (twenty-one years ago)

You are Shane?!!!?!

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 03:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Not quite! More of a Craig!

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 03:12 (twenty-one years ago)

My friend and I were discussing Zit Remedy the other day. Who the fuck would actually name their band that? You know there were a bunch of old people sitting around writing the show's script and they had to think up a fake band name. "Hmm...what are some important concerns of teenagers? What do they think about? What would teenagers go totally ape poopie over?" "Well, they sure do have a lot of zits, don't they" "THAT'S IT!!!"

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 03:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I know! Didn't they eventually change it to The Zits, though? God, they STILL always sing their ONE SONG every time they get together on the new show.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 03:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Really? Well maybe if Wheels wasn't traumatized by being molested by a vacuum salesman and Joey wasn't so busy chasing after Caitlin, they would be able to get in the studio and crank out some new tunes.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 03:27 (twenty-one years ago)

haha, otm. Oh, Wheels, Wheels. What happened to Wheels? Whoa, in a cruel ironic twist, is he the one who ran over that little kid?!

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 03:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmm I don't remember that. Would the writers be that gauche? Yes. Yes they would. Wheels had the best Canadian accent of the bunch, with Caitlin a close second.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 03:35 (twenty-one years ago)

this show is so wrong!!

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 13:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, absolutely. Paige takes the cake with the current cast, though. Her "aboot" resonates within my very soul.

And you're right, s1ocki. This show is so wrong, but so freaking right.

Manny had the abortion, after she was impregnated by Craig, who was cheating on Ashley.

Rick (the kid with the long hair who put Terri in the coma) got feathers and goo dumped on him by Spinner and that Jay kid at some Quiz Bowl shit, and then they made him believe Jimmy was behind it, and he freaked out and tried to kiss Emma, but Emma rebuffed him, so he brought a gun to school and shot Jimmy in the back, and then Sean wrestled the gun away after he aimed it at Emma, and Rick died, and it was fucking AMAZING. Best episode ever.

Daniel Cohen (dayan), Thursday, 6 January 2005 05:22 (twenty-one years ago)

HOLY FUCK. HOLY FUCK. HOLY FUCKING SHIT.

Haha, fuck a bunch of Craig. Did he help Manny out at all?

(Daniel Cohen, did you used to live in Knoxville and go to private school?)

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Thursday, 6 January 2005 14:20 (twenty-one years ago)

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Thursday, 6 January 2005 14:36 (twenty-one years ago)

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Thursday, 6 January 2005 14:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Did Manny confide in Emma only to have Emma pwn her in classic goody-two-shoes style?

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Thursday, 6 January 2005 14:38 (twenty-one years ago)

(Also, I have not watched this in such a long time that I did not know Terri was in a coma. Though I knew that hippie kid was a timebomb.)

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Thursday, 6 January 2005 14:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I have never lived in Knoxville or attended private school (unless you count college).

Craig and Manny actually did the nasty deed, if I remember correctly, on Emma's bed. Ashley confronted Manny about it and they both dumped Craig (in the second part of last December's special two-part Christmas episode).

Manny actually confided in Spike (since Spike, naturally, has experience with these kinds of things - oh, burn!), which led her to reconcile with Emma. Craig wanted to keep the baby, but they failed spectacularly at taking care of the doll during one of those weird health class parenting exercises, so she had an abortion. This episode was never actually aired in the US, although you could download it from Soulseek/BitTorrent once upon a time.

As for Craig and Ashley, that was resolved during the classic battle of the bands episode. Ashley's band, Hell Hath No Fury, who sounded like a third-rate Donnas, wore matching T-shirts silk-screened with Craig's head on fire, and sang a song about hating Craig.

W/r/t Emma being a goody-two-shoes, I have this much to say:

INTERRACIAL BLOW JOBS. Although I doubt it, I sincerely hope that the INTERRACIAL BLOW JOBS episode is aired in the States.

Daniel Cohen (dayan), Thursday, 6 January 2005 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

My girlfriend got me into this about a month and a half ago and I've enjoyed the reruns immensely. I've even gone as far as saying its the best episdoic high school series behind Freaks and Geeks...but that school shooting episode is absolutely terrible. What's the message/morale of this episode exactly? It certainly isn't "be nicer to weird people" because Rick is ridiculously manipulated into thinking Rick is behind his Carrie-like humiliation. Also, the efforts the writers make toward making Rick as unsympathetic as possible were way tacky and far beneath what the show does well.

Far better was the episode in which Rick returns to school after accidentally putting his girlfriend in a coma and the way he challanges everyone to accept him.
The school shooting episode neglects the history of the character, and the reason behind his daily antagonizing by other students, and tries to pull some sort of outdated Columbine riff.

herbert hebert (herbert hebert), Thursday, 6 January 2005 20:22 (twenty-one years ago)

The school shooting episode neglects the history of the character, and the reason behind his daily antagonizing by other students, and tries to pull some sort of outdated Columbine riff.

This is addressed in future episodes. At this point, the American broadcasts are a couple of months behind the Canadian first-runs, and the Rick plotline is nowhere near resolved.

Can we hear more about the interracial blowjobs, plz?

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Monday, 10 January 2005 02:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I was conflating, probably due to the massive amount of Degrassi I've watched lately - Emma's blowjob was not, in and of itself, interracial. The recipient was that Jay kid (he of the backwards baseball cap and surly girlfriend who doesn't like Paige very much). This actually might have been a more phenomenal episode than the school shooting, upon a second viewing; the plot revolved around the possibly-apocryphal post-pubescent "sex bracelet" craze, what with Emma wanting to become a woman or something, and performing the nasty deed on Jay in a van by the ravine that's apparently, like, blowjob central for aspiring sexpots of Degrassi CS.

So notwithstanding the delirious impact of our Miriam going all Linda Lovelace, what was totally great about it (besides all the shots of her guiltily looking at her hard-earned wristband) was the fact that she got gonorrhea as a result. Seriously. And then the whole school found out, and then they all wrote incredibly overwrought entries about it in their journals on degrassi.tv.

For sheer melodrama, however, nothing I've seen from season 4 can quite top the (I think) season-ender: Jimmy comes back to school, permanently paralyzed, and Spinner admits his involvement in the quiz-bowl fiasco and becomes the newest school outcast. So then Spinner and Jay drink a whole lot of iced tea out of a whiskey bottle in the woods, and Spinner staggers over to Jimmy's house to ask for his forgiveness. Jimmy refuses, actually telling him that "you're dead to me," and Spinner steals a car and nearly hits and kills Jimmy in his wheelchair in an impossibly brilliant "Degrassi Junior High" reference.

Then Spinner fesses up to Principal Whatshername and gets expelled from Degrassi for bullying Rick; the sheer OMGness of this episode totally overshadowed the bizarre B-story, featuring JT and Liberty getting caught in a hot tub and Liberty uttering the creepiest come-on in TV history: "Your lips taste like sweet jelly." Eeew!

Daniel Cohen (dayan), Monday, 10 January 2005 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

And I'm not sure how I could have forgotten to mention Marco with the incredibly long relaxed hair that makes him look like Andre 3000. Tremendous.

oh Noggin, how I miss you

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Monday, 10 January 2005 16:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Good god, the jealousy I am feeling right now. I have GOT to get Noggin back.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Monday, 10 January 2005 17:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, just think: if you could have spent the first 18 years of your life freezing in purgatory on the Canadian border, you would have been able to go home for Christmas, watch the Ottawa stations, and see all the new episodes of Degrassi (dubbed in French, if you so desired!) that aren't going to be on Noggin until this summer at the earliest.

No word on whether Spinner's been written off the show or not. Given that new beau Manny (!) appeared to give him the cold shoulder after his role in Rick's rampage became known, it doesn't look like their relationship is long for this world.

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 04:23 (twenty years ago)

I think so, but I also think it may be one of those things that you would have had to watch when it originally aired and when you were young in order to be a fan.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 04:51 (twenty years ago)

I think you can only appreciate Next Generation if you watched Degrassi originally or if you are very young. You might still be able to enjoy the original Degrassi, but you're likely to find it cheesy. Because it is. And that's why it's great.

Dr. Glen Y. Abreu (dr g), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 04:55 (twenty years ago)

Degrassi is better watched with others so you can go OH HO HO SNAP whenever high drama occurs.

DMB Googleplex (Matt Chesnut), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 05:03 (twenty years ago)

I just finished watching the first season of the new generation, and now I'm HOOKED and might have to buy the 2nd season soon. BUT I just bought the second season of the original and I'm DEFINITELY hooked on that. Shane totally just got humilated for carrying around eggbert and joey said : "Hey wheels, lets go get some CHIPS!"

I love it!

Revive AGAIN, since Noggin is now running season five a couple of weeks after the Canadian first-runs. I must point out that the special two-part season premiere absolutely went there: Manny, delirious with self-importance after her turn in the Kevin Smith movie, embarks on an acting career, attempts to get breast implants, gets drunk with boyz and gets caught on camera all Irene-Cara-in-"Fame" shirtless by creepy new kid, who then emails the clip to the entire school.

Emma, who had designs on creepy new kid, disowns Manny, but then Manny's parents find out about the implants and the acting career and REALLY disown Manny, so she winds up moving back in with Emma after one of those convoluted friend-reconciliations that Degrassi does so well.

There's also some bullshit about Ashley breaking up with Craig via an email to Ellie; Ellie spills the beans and Craig gets all brooding, and this situation is resolved by her becoming the new drummer in Craig's band, or something. Good thing Craig didn't go off his meds; the last time that happened he wound up delusional, bloody, and sans guitar in a Toronto homeless shelter within a matter of hours (really!).

two months pass...
Somebody else besides me has to have been watching all season.

So there are nine episodes left in early 2006 (period? I haven't heard for sure if they're going to do a sixth season, although they've been writing a lot of the younger kids into key plot roles). The Jay and Silent Bob plot arc wrapped up, finally, after far too many episodes featuring Kevin Smith as resident grief counselor/voice of reason. Similarly dreadful was JT getting Liberty pregnant; she finally decided to give up the kid after like fifty bad monologues about how nobody understood her struggle, and Canada shed a silent, collective sigh of relief. She'll now return to her usual role of Annoying Overachiever instead of Annoying Pregnant Overachiever, but remember, kids: when you're watching Degrassi 2019 and there's some character who just won't shut the fuck up, he or she is probably adopted.

(Although this did spawn a great two-part episode in which JT took a part-time pharmacy job and started stealing OxyContin in order to pay for an apartment in which to stow away his plump-with-child lady love, predictably falling in with a crowd of violent stoners and attempting suicide. Unsuccessfully, to everyone's dismay.)

Equally dire: Craig/Marco/Ellie/Jimmy's lousy Sublime-ish band winning some talent show and getting signed by a sleazy manager, who, recoiling in horror at Marco's cornrows and Ellie's chops, promptly pushed Craig to go solo and presumably ferried him out to Vancouver to "record a demo," as Craig put off a scholarship to the U of Toronto in favor of a shot at stardom in a Canadian music industry that apparently needs one more band with a name like Downtown Sasquatch. Presumably, he got his guitar back from the homeless guy without too much of a struggle.

What did work: Emma as arch-villain! (Making out with aforementioned camera-wielding creepy new kid, anyway, at the Kevin Smith premiere, catching Snake, whose midlife crisis had previously extended only so far as buying a motorcycle, in the act with Ms. Hatzilakos - cue the predictable overreaction, but at least they've given up the pretense that Emma's a remotely likable character.) Spinner reluctantly joining Bible study group in order to impress a chick, which they actually handled really thoughtfully and sensitively! Paige and Alex's good-girl/bad-girl relationship transmuting into soft-core teen lesbianism! It's like reading "Freaks and Geeks" slash!

roxymuzak, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 03:03 (eighteen years ago)

I remember watching one of the early years, like first or second, when the girl who plays Emma was really young and going through an awkward stage and commenting to my sister that she was going to be really pretty when older. I feel vindicated! I hope that's not too creepy.

horseshoe, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 03:46 (eighteen years ago)

Manny turned out the most o_O, though! Paige got more and more troll-like as time went on. Am I mistaken that she used to be considered the "hot one"?

roxymuzak, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 04:05 (eighteen years ago)

Manny was always adorable, though, so it wasn't a surprise.

isn't Paige still considered the "hot one"? it's one of the things I dig about Degrassi; plain girls are coveted, too.

horseshoe, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 04:06 (eighteen years ago)

Is she even plain? She's a bleached blonde! It's weird, to me. I guess the hottie now is supposed to be Darcy.

The actor that plays him is 17.

roxymuzak, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 06:24 (eighteen years ago)

One of my favorite Degrassi moments of all time is when Darcy slaps Peter across the face, and his face displays a brief smile the camera. Awesome!

How 'bout this roofie rapist? Damn, Darcy: (angrily) "I'm not the kind of person this happens to!"

spinner, too. it's like they've got a body fat % threshold in their contracts
