Electric razors vs razors

I have only ever shaved with an electric razor out of fear of cutting myself. (Although I did just once about manage this anyway). Am I missing out? I have wondered.

Bill, Tuesday, 9 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Acoustic razors for me.

I'd rather deal with cuts than that sharp painful tugging pinch that electric razors deal out. And then you have to clean that shit out.

Brian MacDonald, Tuesday, 9 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Electric razors never shave as closely.

Sean, Tuesday, 9 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Electric for me. They shave close enough by what I can feel and I can do without regular foam and blade resupplies.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 9 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The blade resupply is a pain in the ass but definitely acoustic.

Samantha, Tuesday, 9 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Razors are done for, their time is up, there's no reason to use a razor, electric or regular. I use one of those beard trimmer things which leaves stubble, no cuts, no irritation, and it takes like 12 seconds.

Otis Wheeler, Tuesday, 9 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm currently unplugged, but I'm thinking of going 'lectric. PS. I don't suggest "glitch" shaving.

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Tuesday, 9 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Electric. Never going back.

Jeff, Tuesday, 9 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

But the satisfying "thwack" of your shaving scum hitting the sink! The scree of the blade as it tugs at your neck! Buying new blades from Daddy Gillette at $50 for a 2-pack!! It's all worth it. And for a moustache, essential.

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 9 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Seeing as I don't *have* a mustache, that takes care of that problem. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 9 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

ned, i DEMAND you at least consider the possible eventuality of a moustache at some point in the future.

and mitch: glitch shaving is classic! i've said some things which make autechre song titles seem like paragons of grammatical excellence when cutting myself shaving. ;)

jess, Tuesday, 9 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

ned, i DEMAND you at least consider the possible eventuality of a moustache at some point in the future

You are a sick motherfucking bastard, Harvell. You've seen my photo, imagine *that* with a mustache.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 9 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I 'upgraded' from a Braun electric to some Wilkinson Sword thing in my mid-20s and have never looked back. I suffer pretty horribly with razor rash (though a wet shave causes much less irritation), and side- step this problem by shaving only one every 3 days. This has yet to be a problem in a 'you're not coming to work looking like *that*' scenario.

However, I know a certain birthday boy who won a bale of hay and some sand as The Smoothest-Faced Man In Sidmouth some years back, and he's purely 'lectric.

Michael Jones, Tuesday, 9 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

as my current 'lectric is so on it's last legs, i have been pondering this question myself, the problem being that acoustic shaving SCARES ME SHITLESS, so i think i'll be buying a new leccy one. any suggestions for a good one? then again i suppose we (assuming no girls have yet replied to this thread) could always wax or use immac...

carsmilesteve, Tuesday, 9 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Seeing as I don't *have* a mustache, that takes care of that problem

oh but it presents an entirely new one. Pretty soon you will feel left out.

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 9 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"You are a sick motherfucking bastard, Harvell. You've seen my photo, imagine *that* with a mustache."

oh, i am baby, i am. (rowr.) ;)

(you know, it would have to be a handlebar moustache. and a big top hat. and then you would be a victorian detective's nemesis. oh yes.)

i should also note that i have *never* shaved with a 'lectric, so i can't really offer anything but a one sided opinion. although i always have heard the argument that they don't shave close enough.

jess, Tuesday, 9 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

gotta go with the girlfriend on this one. I use the mach 3 which gives a nice close shave and remains pretty sharp and rarely bites. Unfortunately, the blades are overpriced, but I'd rather pay that than have a not so close shave with an electric and have it rip my hairs out by the roots on occsasion, that smarts.

Hank, Tuesday, 9 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

'Tis true, they don't shave close enough. I have a certain spot on my neck where I just can't get rid of a tiny patch of hair. It's abhorrent, although hopefully only noticeable to paranoid me. (Although people always notice I have much neckhair. what can I say?)

Bill, Tuesday, 9 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ned Raggett is Moriarty!

Bill, Tuesday, 9 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Would that be the Moriarty of Old Sherlock Holmes or Young Sherlock Holmes? (Young Sherlock Holmes, of course, being the best Sherlock Holmes movie EVER. And, yes, it's the only Holmes movie I've seen.)

David Raposa, Tuesday, 9 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Proper razors. The one time I tried a leccy razor it didn't seem to affect my stubble situation either way.

Richard Tunnicliffe, Tuesday, 9 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hey, why are only men posting on this thread? I prefer the Mach 3 and the face seems to put up with metal blades being scraped across it every other day with lots of 'apres rausage' lotion. I haven't cut myself in ages, but have surely tempted fate by just typing that!

matthew, Tuesday, 9 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

electric razor = spotty chin

bic razor = GORE.

My answer = stop shaving.

xoxo

Norman Phay, Tuesday, 9 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ned Raggett is Moriarty!

Oh Jesus Christ, make me a *proper* Victorian villain, dammit! Something from A Rebours or The Picture of Dorian Gray or, if you like, an Edward Gorey piece.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 9 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"acoustic" razor?

ev, Tuesday, 9 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Stop showing off, Nedward, or you're going straight to your room with no dinner.

But anyway, I first shaved when I was 15 with a buzzy electric razor and it tore my face to pieces, I might as well have taken some sandpaper to my face for all the good it did. Shortly after, Bics seemed the way ahead and were until Gillette set me a nice Mach 3 thing for free, and I haven't looked back. Damn those marketing men.

DG, Tuesday, 9 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ned, along with the mustauche, please consider pruning your locks into a mullet. At least, if you ever decide to go short all over, stop at mullet and take some pictures... please? ;-)

Clarke B., Tuesday, 9 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

To Clarke -- sadly, you have confused me with Dave Wyndorf.

Stop showing off, Nedward, or you're going straight to your room with no dinner.

I already had dinner *in* my room while reading things like your mean responses to my perfect and wonderful self. Excuse me. *strikes melancholic twenties pose by the window, sighs*

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 9 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mach 3 is the way to go. Electric leaves too much stubble on the chin and that gets in the way of smoochin'.

bnw, Tuesday, 9 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ned I wish I could shave off that smug expression.

Mike Hanle y, Wednesday, 10 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

or you could have neither and spend five dollars to have a barber trim every 6 months .

anthony, Wednesday, 10 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I use Gillette Sensor Excel (ladies version) for legs and underarms and hardly ever cut myself. The trick is to use a shaving foam with menthol in it (like Nox... Nox... you know the one I mean) which heats up your skin, thereby preventing goose pimples and spotty scabs all over the place. I refuse to upgrade to Venus because of the poncey name. I use cream for other bits of me.

Madchen, Wednesday, 10 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dammit, didn't finish. What I meant to say was that all the gurls electric shavers I've ever tried have been absolute pants and Epilady = pain = no good.

Madchen, Wednesday, 10 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I use acoustic. When I do use it at all heh heh heh. Incidentally has anyone hear ever shaved with a cut-throat razor? I really want to. (NB great marketing guys calling it that).

Tom, Wednesday, 10 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

NoXema = the shaving foam for haX0rZ.

Richard Tunnicliffe, Wednesday, 10 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I seem to recall my dad carried on using a cutthroat for a SCARILY long time after he was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease: given that for the first ten years or so, this ONLY symptoms were clumsiness and shaky hands. Perhaps I have invented this. I use the cheapy bags of throwaway razors. I like the ones with slalom headz and a blue strip, tho not for any effect, just becoz I am a whore for stupid gimmix and plasticky 21st colours. Frankly half the times I shave I might as well be using a woodshaving tool, for all the blood that ensues.

mark s, Wednesday, 10 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have hem hem, upgraded to Venus after yonks of using 'orrid cheap disposable ones. It's pretty and bloo! I used an electric one once and it was bobbins. Aunties give rubbidge xmas pressies. I would feel extremely decadent using proper shaving foam but being as I am a rotten old cheapskate, I use SOAP.

As for other bits, wax, cream (for when being too much of a wax woos), bleach. DAMMIT yr beauty industry is larffing all the way to the banXor.

Sarah, Wednesday, 10 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I used a disposable razor the other day becuse I had lost my funky Gillette Acoustic and scraped nearly all my face off. Mark S, you should avoid them. They are orrid. I have a plan to go to a posh barber and get shaved with hot towels and a cut-throat razor one day. I think it would be grate. Specially because Al Capone did it in the untouchables. Maybe before I get married.

Sam, Wednesday, 10 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I once got a v. nasty cut off a so-called barber using a cut-throat on my sideburns, and so am now filled with dread whenever I hear a barber 'stropping' one (if that's the right word.)

Saying that, am a confirmed Mach 3 wet shaver - I like 'King of Shaves' gel or spray. What happened to those litle soap sticks and brushes that people of my Dad's generation always used? And stypic pencils - what was in those?

Andrew L, Wednesday, 10 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

An electric razor always seems as useful as running a hundred butter knives over my face - ie useless. So it's Gillette Mach 3 and a can of shaving foam each morning for me. Otherwise I end up looking a bit like a desperado.

Paul Strange, Wednesday, 10 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I electric razored thru fear for the first five years of my shaving life and then became a man, with my Bic disposables. And I am a soap and water man with a badgers hair bristle of a brush to whip up super creamy lather. It has been clinically proven that shaving with a soap and water lather is the best way to shave, and blame nasty ing Gillette for his nasty foams and especially that silly gel stuff.

I'm toying with upgrading to a cut-throat razor but am somewhat pu- off by its name.

Pete, Wednesday, 10 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

badgers hair bristle of a brush

That badger hair better have been harvested humanely or there'll be trouble.

Richard Tunnicliffe, Wednesday, 10 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Electric. The buzzing drone of a Remington is actually quite soothing. And you can sing harmonies with it too.

Trevor, Wednesday, 10 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I bought a Philishave the other day and it's complete shit. Back to Mono.

Peter Miller, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nothing Phillips has invented in the last 30 years has been any good. I don't know how they stay in business.

Nick, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

But what about those HDTVs everyone's got? You've got to admit, it's getting better!

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Last year I bought a Philips mini radio, that was shit as well. I'm intrigued by this beard trimmer idea though

Peter Miller, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

two years pass...
I bought the top of the line Philishave Sensotec 8894, which was a very expensive electric razor, but it seems to be worth it. The only problem that I'm having, is that I have a bit of irritation on the neck, but I'm not supposed to judge it for a couple of weeks, to allow my skin to get used to it.

Now don't get me wrong, because I love the Gilette Mach 3 turbo, and I will still use that from time to time, but the Sensotec electric is a very close second, and a 1 hour charge lasts about a month. IT's faster than the Mach 3, and does the job most of the time. I'm just hoping that my neck will get used to it.

garry, Friday, 26 March 2004 04:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Grabbing a gillette mach 3 the wrong way Tuesday night sent me to the local emergency room to get my thumb re-glued back together. They don't normally cut very deeply, but I grabbed it as it slipped out of my hand in a bad spot = nasty nasty cut.

I did learn that they can use gluey stuff these days instead of stitches for bad but not horrible cuts. I had no idea. I feel like I have Elmer's glue under the BandAid. ;-)

(Also, I think girl razors are lame, hence the mach 3. shaves sooooo much nicer than the chick equivalent, and it's silvery!)

lyra (lyra), Friday, 26 March 2004 04:32 (twenty-one years ago)

two months pass...
Aw, MAN. I just thought I'd finally make the leap to electric, because a local dept store had a 50% off sale on all of their electric razors...so I got a fairly expensive one. The bottom line is there were huge patches on my face that the thing wouldn't shave at all because my whiskers are too tough or large or something. I looked like I'd shaved with a weed-wacker without the use of a mirror, and my face felt like I'd used a weed-wacker, too. Screw this, it's going back today. Mach 3 is still the way to go.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Sunday, 13 June 2004 14:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Were Jess, Clarke and I all flirting with each other upthread?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 13 June 2004 15:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Sean, it takes a bit of practice to get used to... I'm pretty much the same if I try and shave the man's way, except that I get cuts as well as patchy bits.

Keith Watson (kmw), Sunday, 13 June 2004 15:11 (twenty-one years ago)

cut-throat for most of face and neck and a electric shaver attachment for sculpting my sideburns into lightning bolts

don (don), Sunday, 13 June 2004 15:30 (twenty-one years ago)

That's the thing, though, I shaved with the Mach 3 and it was smooth as all get out. I guess I just don't like electric when it comes right down to it.

anyone use an electric razor that works real good - shaving is such a pain jeez

❤¯\㋡/¯❤ (ice cr?m), Friday, 2 January 2009 03:54 (seventeen years ago)

Here's a little trick for those of you who use razors. Most of the dulling of the blade that occurs over time is not due to hacking at your bristle, but to microscopic corrosion of the blade edge between shaves. Tap water + soap + whatever salts picked up from your skin only accelerates it.

So the trick is to displace that watery solution with a hydrophobic/oily one. Food oils go rancid, machine oils have nasty carcinogenic additives. But in your local pharmacy you'll find cheap bottles of pharmaceutical mineral oil, of the kind used as a laxative for infants. If its good enough for a baby's gut, its good enough for my grizzled face.

Just dry your blade after use (I blot the tip against a paper towel), immerse the head in the oil, and your pricey Mach 3 cartridges will last 3-5 times as long. There are companies that charge $20 for this sort of kit, but for me a finger of mineral oil in an old pimiento jar, on a folded paper towel next to the sink, works just fine.

derelict, Friday, 2 January 2009 05:16 (seventeen years ago)

mark cl, Friday, 2 January 2009 14:31 (seventeen years ago)

best shave = old-timey shaving methods (shaving brush + good razor + good cream). as far as gillette's fancy new razors, the only one i like is the original sensor. the mach 3/fusion etc are all too bulky

mark cl, Friday, 2 January 2009 14:33 (seventeen years ago)

I had a shaving brush + huge blade razor + shaving powder shave at an old time barber shop once, and it was unbelievably close, almost uncomfortably close. But if he would have cut me it would have turned me off of blade shaving forever.

redmond, Friday, 2 January 2009 14:55 (seventeen years ago)

I am OCD when it comes to this: shaved areas (of face) must be maintained daily with a clean, sharp razor - once down-grain & once up-grain until perfectly smooth. Electrics leave behind a length that, while probably not even visible to others, seems to me like an intolerable five o'clock shadow.

Pain don't hurt. (Pillbox), Friday, 2 January 2009 19:25 (seventeen years ago)

Tried using electric for a coupla weeks on two separate occasions a few years apart and was never satisfied with the closeness - especially around the contours - and even managed to cut myself once. Plus cleaning/charging the thing was a pain in the neck (a metaphorical pain, obv, as opposed to the literal pain derived from cutting your throat with gnashing electric blades.) Twin-blade disposables for me, thanks, a new one every two shaves, or three at the most. Luckily I can get away with shaving (in teh shower) only twice a week.

Yeah I'm kinda lucky on this front, because the millimeter of stubble left over by a close trim tends to leave me looking better than a full shave. (Also I suppose darker skin leaves it looking less like scruffy stubble.)

Icey, we probably just have different facial-hair qualities, but me after a complete trim-down with a beard trimmer looks pretty much like you in your "shaven" photo. Maybe your beard's too heavy for it to work, but if it does, there are advantages -- clippers are cheap, fast, easy, don't irritate the skin, and only leave the vaguest of unshaven shadows. Like an 8 o'clock shadow at most.

Ah, I see. I'm pretty ignorant about superheroes - never had much use for Marvel or DC stuff. (My own comics of choice were Dennis the Menace, Archie and Uncle Scrooge.)

thirteen years pass...

I'd never used an electric razor before but I was so fucking bored with shaving - after decades of having to scrape hair off my face - that I recently bought one. And... what's use/point of these things, the fuckers don't shave you properly!

So glad I've never been in a position that I had to shave regularly. I let it go until it starts looking comical and then do something about it. Maybe.

Cow_Art, Saturday, 21 October 2023 12:13 (two years ago)

In my mid 20s I used an electric razor for convenience as a "that'll do" attitude to shaving while I was working in an open plan office. But from late 20s onwards it wasn't cutting it (pun intended) so I switched back (pun not intended) to a razor.

I've tried electrics, all variety of disposables, a safety razor. I've yet to find a satisfactory shave. I think my technique probably sucks. I'm left-handed, not sure that that makes any difference. I'd try a straight razor, but I'd probably end up cutting my own throat.

I've been shaving for 40+ years, btw.

My First Electric got a jammed button and vibrated itself to death in the cupboard. I think I'll pick up something with batteries I can replace myself and a firmer switch. Panasonic ES-RS10 ?

maf you one two (maffew12), Monday, 23 October 2023 16:22 (two years ago)

I have never found that anything apart from a safety razor works for me. disposables get clogged up, electric doesn't really work at all, blades are terrifying. only problem with safety razors is how few shops stock the blades, though it's getting better of late.

the world is your octopus (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Monday, 23 October 2023 16:50 (two years ago)

Made my peace with electric vs periodically finding new Mach 3 blades (always later than I oughta)

maf you one two (maffew12), Monday, 23 October 2023 16:53 (two years ago)

I've found that you have to spend quite a lot to get an electric razor that works. my current one was over £100 but it does actually work. not as close as a Gillette or whatever but does a decent enough job. cheap electric razors are completely useless though

Colonel Poo, Monday, 23 October 2023 16:54 (two years ago)

I find it difficult to get a safety razor at the right angle, and I've cut myself deeper with one of those than with anything else.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Monday, 23 October 2023 16:58 (two years ago)

(xp) Well they can cost £300/400, so I assume those one works.
