2. I have duplicate albums listed by the same artists on occassion. How the heck do I delete the duplicate albums. Does this have something to do with the id3 tags?
3. And how do I remove songs from the iPod?
Please help this iPod idiot.

2. select the duplicate songs, right click and select "clear".
3. Do the same as above, but select & delete the songs when you have your ipod selected on the left side of the screen.

don't erase songs from your library as your method of choosing what to sync. i'd recommend either
- create a special playlist (or more, if desired) for your ipod syncing. when the pod is plugged in, you'll get an icon in the lower right corner for ipod options - within those menus you can choose what playlists to sync.
or
- use the checkmark system to determine what to sync. this is also a checkbox within the ipod options. "sync only checked files" or something. keep in mind that the checkmarks effect every playlist & the library. i.e. if you uncheck something on a playlist, it also unchecks it in the library and everywhere else.
that's why i go with #1 - i use the checks to "turn off" songs which i don't really want to hear at this time (if i put it on random, say)
you are going to have to take the time to do a major cleaning of id tags in order for itunes and your ipod to work really well. sucks but it's worth it! itunes is actually a pretty good tool for tag editing. you can edit bunches of songs at once, where applicable, by highlighting them and rightclick --> get info

Can't remember where the option for Restore is (except that you do it on the computer, not the iPod) and it's probably different on a PC anyway.

When I attempt to import/rip tracks into iTunes, the resulting mp3s are choppy. When I do the same with other software, the results are fine.
This problem might not be completely tied to iTunes, though -- I just noticed that the sound is also choppy when I'm listening to mp3s off otherwise fine data CDRs.
Any ideas? I've had all other applications and whatnot closed out while doing this, so I know it doesn't come down to having too much stuff running at the same time.

I've had this problem while running no other apps.
Does it happen with every CD?
It has happened with the four or five that I've attempted to import/rip since the problem first started.
And I do think that the issue goes beyond iTunes, since playing an mp3 off a data CDR through Windows Media Player gives me the choppiness as well. HOWEVER, if I copy an mp3 off a data CDR and PLAY THAT through WMP, the sound is fine.

Yes teeny, you can drag and drop if you want, but iTunes works with this thing called a Library, which makes life great in so many ways, but it's kind of a pain if you just want to listen to something other than an audio CD just temporarily.

And Adam continues to be a weirdo -- I just grabbed a CD of AACs that I burned a while back (in iTunes) and it's letting me play them, in iTunes, off the CD, just like Adam was hoping it would. So I thnk he's hiding whatever his real problem is.
It doesn't work with burned DVDs, apparently, though.

It stems from the fact that I've only got about 13GB of available memory on my laptop for my iTunes library, so if I want to fill more than a third of my iPod I've got to delete stuff from the library to put more stuff in there, and then manually transfer stuff over to the iPod rather than use the default automatic transfer.
This is fine (even if it's a bit more of a pain), but the problem is that I've already deleted a load of stuff from the library, and iTunes is still set to automatically sync with the iPod when it's connected up (which will obviously then delete all the tunes from the iPod which I've deleted from the library).
According to the manual you change the setting to manually transfer stuff by selecting the iPod in the Source list and then changing it. The problem is, it's got to be connected up to do this.
There must be a way of changing the setting to manually transfer songs without losing half of what's on the iPod at the moment, but I don't know what it is.
Please can anyone help?

2 choices.
the new itunes has a feature to mark albums as compilations, and then it will not list every artist separately.
OR
you can list the artist as "Various Artists" and put the artist AND song title where song title usually goes. that's my workaround, works good for the ipod. nothing i hate more than random comp artists strewn all over the place.
― cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 1 July 2004 16:35 (twenty-one years ago)
When you enter/download the tag info, there's a flag for comps. (It's a checkbox in the iTunes interface for "is part of a compilation.")
If that flag is true, iTunes notes the track number (X of Y) based on the compilation title. So if you display your collection by album, the comp tracks will be in the right order even if that means the artist names aren't alphabetical.
As far as I know you can still order tracks by artist and have the comp split up and show up listed under the individual artists by track if you want. Setting the flag just lets iTunes keep track of which tracks belong to which comps when you organize by album.

Now I'm back in the UK, at what will be the only PC I'm gonna be using with the ipod in the future. Itunes asked me if I want to sync it's library with my ipod, and I clicked 'no' because I didn't know if that means it will remove everything that's already on the ipod. Would it? Do I have to have the files on this PC to keep them on the ipod?

I have a large music collection. I store much of it on a large cumbersome drive. I also like to drop PHAT BEATZ FOR DANCING sometimes. I do not wanna lug a 5 pound disk thingee with 30 gigs of Dead Kennedys boots just so I can play LCD Soundsystem crap for clueless college idiots. iTunes very happily lets me add stuff to my library while keeping it in the original location. However, is there a good way to move whole albums to what amounts to a second iTunes Library directory tree on my internal hard disk?

move artist folder to internal disk from externaldrag folder from int disk into iTunesstuff should import ok -- sometimes long / weird song titles get mangled when reconstructing db info from the filesort by "time added to itunes"delete old entries from library

i made some really good mixes for myself on my ancient office imac, using itunes. i didn't consider the fact that the imac will not connect to the ipod. i tried putting the songs on a zip disk and connecting the drive to my ibook, but the ibook won't recognize the files. itunes help doesn't seem to cover this. i'm getting really frustrated! it's not a big deal, but i'd rather not lose the music (a good amount of the stuff was from things since sold). um.. any thoughts?

Anyway, it's supposed to be a one-way process only - it synchs with what's in one (and only one) computer. However, there are third-party hacks to get around this if you need to. The same question was asked upthread re:Windows (on Aug 21st). There are equivalents for Mac. Have a look on some shareware site or ipodlounge - shouldn't be too hard to find. I can't recommend any, as I've never had to use one.

You just need to trick it into thinking you're typing something else (by, say, all of the title except for the first letter) then go back after you've finished (with the mouse or arrow keys) and adding the first letter.

I've never been convinced that I've been getting anything like 8 hours out of a battery charge. Maybe six, as long as I didn't leave it (asleep) for more than a night.
But I hadn't noticed it deteriorate either. But the last couple of weeks, it seems totally fucked. I charge it up. Sometimes I even disconnect when it says charged and then reconnect, just to be sure it's fully charged. The battery meter says it's full. I use it. After about an hour or so, it's down about a third of the way. Not too bad. But then it just cuts out completely. The 'No battery power remains - please reconnect to computer' message flashes up and that's it.
This can't be regular depletion, can it?
The point is - will getting the battery replaced solve the problem, do you think? Or is this suggestive of some fault with the iPod itself. I don't really understand battery technology - are there individualy cells, many of which might have failed in some way, leaving just one operative or something?
I don't want to waste my money buying a new battery only to find it makes no difference. AAARGH!

The battery meter is never even close to being accurate. Are you listening to playlists or albums? For a reason that would best be described by someone who knew better than I, the battery gets used up much more when listening to any music put into a certain sequential order. (The iPod has spends part of its resources "looking ahead" to cover for any glitches.)
Mine was doing this, too, even after one hour. I realized that some of the ten-minute songs in my hour-long playlists might've been messing with it some. I tried it without the long songs, and it's acted better. I really couldn't tell you if this is going to work in your circumstance, though.
So, um, good luck with that.

It's true! No replacement battery, third-party or otherwise; no hardware replacement or adjustment of any kind. All we did was search through Apple's support forums and tech notes, which told us that one of the iPod software updates (we forget which; maybe 1.2.6?) addressed a battery life problem, and that several people who had lost most of their battery capacity got it back after doing a restore of their iPods to the new firmware version. It seemed to work for some people and not for others, but after a bit of research, it seemed that most people had luck if they performed the restore after letting their iPod battery discharge to the point where it was completely and totally dead-- meaning, there wasn't even enough charge left to display the battery warning icon when a button was pushed.
So we played our iPod right into the ground, and when it was dead, dead, dead, we plugged it in and did the big, scary restore. (A restore actually wipes all the music and data off the 'Pod, but since the magic of FireWire lets us fill our 5 GB iPod in about ten minutes, it was really no big deal.) When we were done with the update, we threw a little music back on the 'Pod, let it charge for a few hours, unplugged it-- and played it for about six and a half hours straight. And it's been fine ever since. Well, actually, the capacity does keep lessening over time; it's probably down to about five hours, now, but that's to be expected with a battery. It's just that a lot of the "dead" iPod batteries out there probably aren't dead at all-- just resting. Beautiful plumage.
Since we originally mentioned that procedure, we've heard from three AtAT viewers who have resuscitated "dead" iPod batteries the same way, based on our suggestion. So it's not just us. Again, it may not work for everybody, but clearly it works for some people. If you've got an iPod that's similarly afflicted, you might consider trying a restore with the latest iPod software updater after running the battery all the way down-- at least before you plunk down $50 for an install-it-yourself battery or $100 for Apple to do it for you.

There is a hack available here to remove the cap > http://www.pochoirs.de/leechs/iMod.zip
Taken from this German site > http://www.pochoirs.de/software_es.htm - the Google translator says that this mod will "Killt the European Laustaerkebeschraenkung iPods. Small and powerfully!"
I'd sniff around some more reliable sites/forums before installing - just to make sure the thing actually works.

http://homepage.mac.com/paalb/iPod/iPod2.html
My learned method, I didn't make this up and it's from memory so don't beat me:
0. Create a playlist which has all the songs you want/have on the iPod (optional duh)1. Create a playlist that has nothing in it. NOTHING.2. tell iTunes that's the playlist you want it to update into the iPod automatically when you plug it in or whatever3. Do this. Erases all the songs! Awesome.4. tell iTunes to stop doing that after you verify the iPod is totally blank5. Refill the iPod using whatever other playlist you like, maybe that one from the optional step above would be a good idea.
See if that doesn't help.

basically, i've got an old ipod that went with my dell laptop. i got an external USB 2.0 harddrive to keep my music on, since my dell didn't have enough space for music. that worked ok.
so now i've got my lovely new powerbook. i've got some music on the powerbook, mostly stuff i've downloaded or ripped, just for my shuffle.
i've been putting off figuring out how to put the music on my powerbook, since i made a mess of it last time. basically, i'd like suggestions on the best way to essentially start from scratch, so it's more organised. i'll be re-formatting the pod this weekend to use it when i'm back in the states, and will need to reinstall all the music.
currently, when i download music, it goes to a soulseek folder, or download folder, depending. even if i drag it to the itunes folder, the music doesn't appear(is that normal? why is that?) i have to highlight newly downloaded songs and drag them into the library while itunes is open. i've got the setting so it copies music to the itunes library folder, but can change it if people suggest it.
i think i'd like to keep most of my music on the external drive, and only use it when i'm updating my pod, which isn't that often. can i add a folder there as a library? can i have a separate library that's just looking at the external drive, so i don't have greyed out songs that i can't listen to most of the time?
hmm. not sure this post makes any sense, but i thought i'd ask for advice before i just start muddling along. i clearly don't understand how itunes works, even though i use it nearly every day. any suggestions for the best way of organising things are welcome, and sorry about the super long post!
― colette (a2lette), Friday, 22 April 2005 09:22 (twenty years ago)
I used to have all my stuff on an external HD but I would download to a specific folder in my C: drive. Then I would juste add files and folders with iTunes, which in turn would automatically transfer them to my external HD (where the organized iTunes folder was).
― Baaderonixxxorzh (Fabfunk), Friday, 22 April 2005 09:36 (twenty years ago)
is there any way of having multiple libraries, so i can only look at the library that's on my laptop when i'm not hooked up to the external drive, and another for playing with my pod?

Basically, I haven't done anything to my computer in a while. The only thing that has occurred recently on my computer is:1) Word processing files added doing work for school.2) Ripped a CD on saturday night.3) Upgraded OS to 10.3.9 about a week to two weeks ago (forget exact date)
Suddenly, as of yesterday (remember, OS upgrade was over a week ago and I have used iTunes and plugged in my iPod since then), iTunes does not want to work if my iPod is plugged in. If my iPod is not plugged in, it opens fine. If it is plugged in, it immediately quits. I followed their advice to rebuild the library (with iPod unplugged, obviously, because program wouldn't start with iPod in--I didn't realize at the time that the problem was to do with the status of the iPod though, I ejected it before doing library work), and discovered that SINCE I did that, my iPod was apparently completely wiped the second I plugged it back into the laptop. So not only can I not add songs to my iPod because iTunes won't speak to it, I don't have anything on my iPod anymore, the thing seems to have been reformatted, mysteriously, at some point after I rebuilt the iTunes library.
WTF? This was working as of Saturday (last time I opened iTunes before yesterday--iPod was plugged in at the time and it worked just fine). I have NOT reinstalled iTunes yet, should I do this? Can this actually be related to the system upgrade, I know that has been causing people problems--but like I said, it was working just fine for at least a WEEK after I did the upgrade. No other programs are acting oddly at all, just iTunes. In the event that I can't fix this easily, is there any way to manually add the songs back to my iPod from the finder, without using iTunes? My desktop is recognizing it just fine, but when I open it from the finder there's no longer a clearly marked folder where you'd find music files, it just has the "notes" folder and nothing else and I'm scared to fuck with it.
I'm going to copy/paste the crash report here so more technically astute people can look at it, maybe this will tell something. AFAIK the APE manager is up to date unless there has been something released v. recently. I haven't done anything wrong, the traditional things they tell you not to do like not ejecting the iPod properly or something like that--it just stopped working all of a sudden, yesterday, with no changes to the system whatsoever done on Sunday or Monday at all.

Help? It appears to have made all the files hidden, including from the iPod? It claims, when I try to play songs, that there are no songs on it.
― Allyzay do not obtain to make download of yours MP3 (allyzay), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 19:39 (twenty years ago)
From that thread:
"Okay now, what I found in doing this myself is that you CAN keep your library if you go into the hard drive and erase iTunes 4.71 and then download iTunes 4.70. (DO NOT TOUCH THE MUSIC ITSELF) -After that, erase your iPod updates and the software associated with them. -Once all of that is done, you can then download the iPod update from 11-15-04 (if ou can find it online). -Restore the iPod, and update it using the November update. -Once all of that is done, try plugging the iPod into iTunes and you shouldn't see any more problems. If you ARE still having problems, it may be that the iPod itself was corrupted and it needs to be replaced (which happened with my 6th iPod.) "
And here's the link for the November update he's talking about. http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/ipodupdater20041115.html
Someone also mentioned something about unplugging FireWire devices? I just skimmed the discussion, but maybe look into that, too.

My iPod won't work on my home PC without me (presumably) updating the BIOS and re-installing XP. I can't be bothered to do that so am just copying tracks to it on the work PC.

since i've had itunes (5 years or so) i've massively increased the amount of music on my computer and had to move stuff around to different drives from time to time to free up space in C:
my itunes no longer has a clue where any of my music is when i go to play it and i cna't be arsed to manually find every single track. is there a simple solution to this or am i jus going to have to wipe everything out of my library and start again?
(i may have asked this before somewhere but am still devoid of a solution so i also may not have)

Pls pls pls! i know it's a boring question that who can be botherred to answer right but i'd do it for you.... i really would
― Uptoeleven, Friday, 20 July 2007 15:49 (eighteen years ago)
1. Select everything in your iTunes window and delete it. When it asks if you want it to move everything to the trash/recycling bin, DON'T do it!.
2. Do a spotlight search (or "Find files/folders" if you are using windows) for ".mp3" Select everything in the results window and drag it into iTunes.
If you have the hard drive space, after step one I would go into iTunes prefs/advanced and select "Keep iTunes Music folder organized" and "Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library. Then, do step 2 (it will copy all the tracks into your iTunes Music folder), and then drag all those files from Spotlight/Find into the trash/recycling bin. iTunes does a pretty good job of keeping organized folders of all your music.
― schwantz, Friday, 20 July 2007 16:04 (eighteen years ago)
Ooo - if you have other formats (mp4, m4a, wav, aiff, etc), you must repeat these steps for them too. Unfortunately, WAV and AIFF metadata is stored in your library file, so you may lose it when you do this.

My father-in-law just gave me his son's unused iPod (haha, it had Bob Marley's Legend, a Doors best of, and Led Zepplin IV, and that's it).
ANYWAY, it was formatted for Windows & I have a Mac. So, here's what Apple tells me to do to restore it to factory settings (is this even what I'd want to do? From everything I've read, I understand this is the correct path.):
• Select your iPod in the Source panel and you will see information about your iPod appear in the Summary tab of the main iTunes windows.
So far so good, coming up just as described...but THEN:
• Click the Restore button. You will be prompted with one or more restore options that may prompt iTunes to automatically download the latest iPod Software.
And that's what the Summary tab tells me to do, as well. The problem is: there is no restore button. Uh...what?
So, could anyone help me through this or guide me to another way to make this usable on my Mac?
― Abbott, Tuesday, 31 July 2007 23:57 (eighteen years ago)
I tied installing the updater program too. It's giving me this message:
iPod 2 Software cannot be installed on this computer. This update requires the Mac OS X Networking Update.
And the Apple site says this in their FAQ:
This can happen with any Mac with Mac OS X 10.4 or later when you try to use older iPod software. To avoid this, download and install the latest iPod Updater.
AND the link takes me to download iTunes 7.3.1, which I did, and no dice...the updater still isn't working.

I don't have iTunes here to check, but I remember that catching me out a few times. I don't think you need to download the updater separately anymore either -- iPod v. 2 is pretty out-of-date now.

I just bought my wife a Nano, and I'm trying to set it up. iTunes installed on her PC easily, and it was a breeze to connect the Nano to the PC for the first time.
But now it's been a few hours and the Nano still just says "Connected." No songs have been transferred (I burned four discs to the new iTunes to test the Nano), and I can't get beyond the "Connected" screen on the Nano. Should I just let it continue charging? If so, when has it charged enough? Or should I disconnect it and begin the process again?
Thanks.
― Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 27 July 2008 22:58 (seventeen years ago)
you have to 'eject' it from itunes to use it
― DG, Sunday, 27 July 2008 23:00 (seventeen years ago)
Thanks! Two follow-ups: (a) By "eject it," do you mean just disconnect it from the USB portal (or is there some other, more involved process I have to go through) and, once I eject it, (b) plug it in again?
Sorry to be so thick-headed. I'm not terribly tech-savvy.
― Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 27 July 2008 23:02 (seventeen years ago)
once you've dumped what music you want on it, if you look on the bar on the left in itunes you'll see next to an icon of yr ipod a little eject symbol - click it then unplug yr ipod, you'll be able so scroll through all the menus etc
― DG, Sunday, 27 July 2008 23:04 (seventeen years ago)
Thanks!
― Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 27 July 2008 23:05 (seventeen years ago)
Gah. I "ejected the disc," but it didn't transfer any of the music files. Any further guidance is appreciated.
― Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 27 July 2008 23:24 (seventeen years ago)
you have to "drag" the "music" to the "nano"

― Mr. Que, Sunday, 27 July 2008 23:27 (seventeen years ago)
or uncheck "manually manage music and videos" (should be on the main screen for the ipod), then it will copy over new songs automatically.
― ledge, Sunday, 27 July 2008 23:28 (seventeen years ago)
Not sure what you mean. I inserted four discs, and when the icon appeared asking if I wanted to import them to the nano, I clicked "yes." (I also downloaded one song from iTunes, just to test it). Then, I followed the steps DG kindly suggested. After ejecting the iPod, I didn't have any music files on it.
Do I have to drag the music to the nano beyond what I did?
--Ah--. I'll check out the support site. Thanks (and thanks to ledge; I'll try that now).
― Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 27 July 2008 23:28 (seventeen years ago)
yes
― Mr. Que, Sunday, 27 July 2008 23:29 (seventeen years ago)
the icon appeared asking if I wanted to import them to the nano
yeah that will import to the library on the computer, then you move stuff to the ipod
― DG, Sunday, 27 July 2008 23:31 (seventeen years ago)
Thanks again. I was able to manually transfer the songs to the nano (by "dragging and dropping" them). I'd much rather have everything sync automatically, but so far, I haven't been able to set up auto syncing (put differently, the "manually manage music and videos" option isn't anywhere to be found on my nano (as far as I can see); under Edit --> Preferences --> Syncing, there's an unchecked icon for "Disable automatic syncing for all iPhones and iPods," but it doesn't seem right to check and uncheck that box, and I don't see anything else fitting ledge's description).
― Daniel, Esq., Monday, 28 July 2008 00:25 (seventeen years ago)
in the bar on the left there's a 'devices' heading and and yr ipod will be underneath it - click on it and you'll get a status screen w/ a picture of yr ipod, you'll find the relevant check box there (as well as a 'sync' button, bottom right)
― DG, Monday, 28 July 2008 00:35 (seventeen years ago)
Have you tried selecting the icon of the iPod, in the left-hand column of iTunes, by clicking on it? That should give you lots of options.

I think auto-sync should be the default setting, DG. Not sure why it isn't (or if it's something I did -- unwittingly -- to alter the default). Tracer, I think I tried that, but I'll try again.

What's a good free solution to get music from an ipod to the computer, using Windows (I know the answer for a Mac, but this is for my parents...)?

there is a program that used to be called 'podutil' but is now called 'music rescue'.

Can you no longer show hidden files and folders, then navigate to the iPod_Control directory?

This is surely a ridiculous question but how do I rename my On The Go playlists when iTunes is up and running? I have tried souble/triple/quadruple clicking, right clicking, etc.. am I doomed to navigate to On The Go 7 whenever I need a Creedence fix?

i had no idea this ever worked...the one time I looked inside my ipod the files were not named in a straighforward way and not in any kind of order.

If they're all tagged appropriately, the filename doesn't really matter.

but if you're just looking to pull a few files off, it is not a feasible solution. if you're trying to get everything off I suppose it's fine.

I did the following:
1. Point Winamp at the iPod_Control directory and load the whole thing. 2. Selected the files I wanted to grab. 3. "Converted" them from mp3 to mp3, in essence copying the ones I wanted off of the iPod and into the Winamp output directory.

*flashes boobs, leg in hopes of someone pulling over, picking her up, and showing her how to rename her playlists*

I hope it (and you) were smart enough that it didn't reencode!
