Help me with iPod and iTunes please!

1. So i dl iTunes last night. Great program, except I can't figure it out. ehphod shows up in iTunes when I plug in my Ipod. I deleted ehphod all together and it still shows up? Do I need to do a complete reinstall of iTunes?

2. I have duplicate albums listed by the same artists on occassion. How the heck do I delete the duplicate albums. Does this have something to do with the id3 tags?

3. And how do I remove songs from the iPod?

Please help this iPod idiot.

Chris B. Sure (Chris V), Friday, 5 December 2003 12:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I did the same thing a while back, I can't quite remember what I did to make it work. I think I deleted the Ephpod entry and cleared the whole of iTunes and then File > Add Folder to Library'd my MP3 folder. The duplication may be down to the fact that it's combining both the Ephpod library and the iTunes library. I would suggest moving all you mp3s into on folder, say My Documents/My Music, clearing everything out of iTunes and then adding that folder to your library. Hope this helps.

thanks.

Chris B. Sure (Chris V), Friday, 5 December 2003 12:58 (twenty-one years ago)

i just got a bogus e-mail receipt thanking me for my iPod order - i suspect this is a scam attempt (you ring them to say they made a mistake then they ask to check your card number or something) - weird

stevem (blueski), Friday, 5 December 2003 13:07 (twenty-one years ago)

no one?

Chris B. Sure (Chris V), Friday, 5 December 2003 14:33 (twenty-one years ago)

3. Delete them from your iTunes library and then connect your iPod. iTunes will replicate the library onto your iPod. If you've deleted any songs from the library then they'll be deleted from the iPod.

Alfie (Alfie), Friday, 5 December 2003 14:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't have iTunes here at work to make sure this is right, but:
1. Make sure you do a full uninstall of Ephpod. Go to Control Panel and select Add/Remove Programs and remove it.

2. select the duplicate songs, right click and select "clear".

3. Do the same as above, but select & delete the songs when you have your ipod selected on the left side of the screen.

BrianB, Friday, 5 December 2003 14:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks again guys.

Chris B. Sure (Chris V), Friday, 5 December 2003 14:46 (twenty-one years ago)

the only thing is that the library doesn't show duplicate songs.

Chris B. Sure (Chris V), Friday, 5 December 2003 14:51 (twenty-one years ago)

so where are the duplicate songs if not in the library?

don't erase songs from your library as your method of choosing what to sync. i'd recommend either

- create a special playlist (or more, if desired) for your ipod syncing. when the pod is plugged in, you'll get an icon in the lower right corner for ipod options - within those menus you can choose what playlists to sync.

or

- use the checkmark system to determine what to sync. this is also a checkbox within the ipod options. "sync only checked files" or something. keep in mind that the checkmarks effect every playlist & the library. i.e. if you uncheck something on a playlist, it also unchecks it in the library and everywhere else.

that's why i go with #1 - i use the checks to "turn off" songs which i don't really want to hear at this time (if i put it on random, say)

you are going to have to take the time to do a major cleaning of id tags in order for itunes and your ipod to work really well. sucks but it's worth it! itunes is actually a pretty good tool for tag editing. you can edit bunches of songs at once, where applicable, by highlighting them and rightclick --> get info

HIT IT WITH TRUNCHEON.

Sarah (starry), Friday, 5 December 2003 15:18 (twenty-one years ago)

also you now have the opportunity to set volume levels and eq's for each song, which would take lots of time too. i usually just make a note when i hear one which seems way too loud or soft, and fix them as needed

ron (ron), Friday, 5 December 2003 15:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I have no idea where the dups are. I'm pretty sure its the tags that are causing it. Its not a big deal but its not very appealing to look at my albums area and see two copies of certain albums.

Chris B. Sure (Chris V), Friday, 5 December 2003 15:19 (twenty-one years ago)

i think that if you delete them from the library, they won't return as long as you don't do another "add directory to library" dealio. i've deleted some dupes from mine and they seem to be gone even though i'm pretty sure that in most cases i haven't actually deleted the files.

this ephpod thing is weird, i don't think i had uninstalled it when i put itunes on here, but didn't have this problem of it showing up

ron (ron), Friday, 5 December 2003 15:25 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah i totally wiped it from the pc and it still shows up. Thats another reason why i think im getting dups. "add folder to library" is what I did.

Chris B. Sure (Chris V), Friday, 5 December 2003 15:45 (twenty-one years ago)

or maybe i could just wipe out the original files and replace them with new ripped ones. Its only 4 albums that are being repeated so its not a biggie.

Chris B. Sure (Chris V), Friday, 5 December 2003 15:47 (twenty-one years ago)

If things are showing up on your iPod that aren't in iTunes then something's wrong and you might be as well to Restore the iPod (like reformatting it).

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 5 December 2003 15:54 (twenty-one years ago)

thats the next step. um how do i reformat?

Chris B. Sure (Chris V), Friday, 5 December 2003 15:55 (twenty-one years ago)

oh ok they're going duped onto the ipod? (sorry i'm slow)

that used to happen to me a lot in ephpod, though i haven't seen it yet in itunes. but yes, it had to do with tags

ron (ron), Friday, 5 December 2003 15:56 (twenty-one years ago)

install the updater program

ron (ron), Friday, 5 December 2003 15:56 (twenty-one years ago)

updater will reformat? I have it already installed. Yup duped into the iPod itself. So i guess a complete wipe of the original albums and then a fresh rip. not a problem it only takes 4 minutes to rip on the new pc.

Chris B. Sure (Chris V), Friday, 5 December 2003 15:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yeah - I sometimes got the duplication problem with artists. There weren't doubles of songs though - just some of an artist's tracks would be under one artist's heading and others would be under another, seemingly identically spelled version. Turned out it was because of trailing spaces after the artist's name in some of the tags. Get rid of them and the two sets were consolidated.

Can't remember where the option for Restore is (except that you do it on the computer, not the iPod) and it's probably different on a PC anyway.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 5 December 2003 16:01 (twenty-one years ago)

its double of whole albums. for instance i have one entry for the stills under artists...then i hit the button to check out the albums under the stills and 'logic will break your heart' shows up twice. Same with Black Keys. and the whole album is duplicated. just takes up space.

Chris B. Sure (Chris V), Friday, 5 December 2003 16:04 (twenty-one years ago)

If all the tracks are under both versions of the album then yeah, it's not the same problem as I had. Just an idea.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 5 December 2003 16:07 (twenty-one years ago)

(my duplicates would show up in iTunes too)

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 5 December 2003 16:08 (twenty-one years ago)

i suspect that you might continue to have this problem until you have a look at those tags. i can't remember, but i think deleting one or the other of v1 & v2 (??) tags might help, if there is information entered in both. however i don't think itunes will let you look at them both, try winamp if you want to check this.

ron (ron), Friday, 5 December 2003 16:10 (twenty-one years ago)

whats the difference between v1 and v2? roth and hagar?

Chris B. Sure (Chris V), Friday, 5 December 2003 16:18 (twenty-one years ago)

three months pass...
Another iTunes-related question here.

When I attempt to import/rip tracks into iTunes, the resulting mp3s are choppy. When I do the same with other software, the results are fine.

This problem might not be completely tied to iTunes, though -- I just noticed that the sound is also choppy when I'm listening to mp3s off otherwise fine data CDRs.

Any ideas? I've had all other applications and whatnot closed out while doing this, so I know it doesn't come down to having too much stuff running at the same time.

Andy K (Andy K), Sunday, 28 March 2004 14:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Might be...I've never noticed any choppiness in all the time I've been using iTunes since 2001. Are you running Mac or PC, what version of iTunes etc.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 28 March 2004 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

PC/iTunes 4

It started just the other day. Everything was smooth until then.

Andy K (Andy K), Sunday, 28 March 2004 15:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Hm, since you're on PC I can't really suggest much, I fear. That is pretty odd. Did you install anything else recently?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 28 March 2004 16:01 (twenty-one years ago)

No recent installations.

Andy K (Andy K), Sunday, 28 March 2004 16:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Hm. Try ripping without as many apps running and see if there's a difference, I s'pose.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 28 March 2004 17:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Does it happen with every CD?

Casuistry (Chris P), Sunday, 28 March 2004 17:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Try ripping without as many apps running and see if there's a difference, I s'pose.

I've had this problem while running no other apps.

Does it happen with every CD?

It has happened with the four or five that I've attempted to import/rip since the problem first started.

And I do think that the issue goes beyond iTunes, since playing an mp3 off a data CDR through Windows Media Player gives me the choppiness as well. HOWEVER, if I copy an mp3 off a data CDR and PLAY THAT through WMP, the sound is fine.

Andy K (Andy K), Sunday, 28 March 2004 18:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Probably either the CD is scratched to the point of data error or your CD laser is off. I'd guess the former, though.

Girolamo Savonarola, Sunday, 28 March 2004 18:33 (twenty-one years ago)

andy i would look into how the cd is being imported -- what bitrate, speed, etc. i had problems along those lines a few months ago after i had to reformat my hd, and i finally realized that, for whatever reason, my machine didn't like how the files were being imported. changed a couple of settings and it worked a-ok.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Sunday, 28 March 2004 18:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Activating the 'error correction' option in iTunes seems to have solved the problem. I am puzzled as to why each disc I attempt to import would suddenly need this; I imported hundreds of discs prior to this with no problem. (I am also guessing that I will have the same choppiness problem when I attempt to play mp3s off a data CDR, but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.)

Thanks for your suggestions.

Andy K (Andy K), Sunday, 28 March 2004 21:17 (twenty-one years ago)

My iPod keeps "re-setting" in some way or other which means that the most fun bit of the whole shebang, ranking the choons in the order of how many times you've played them, becomes wrong. Gah!

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 29 March 2004 11:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I've just restored the motherfucker. Honestly, this whole ipod experience has been terrible.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 12 April 2004 09:36 (twenty-one years ago)

one month passes...
Maybe we've covered this elsewhere, but can ITunes read and play MP3 cds without me having to copy all the data to my HD? Surely it can, but how?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 21 May 2004 16:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Come on!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 21 May 2004 17:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not sure. Under the Preferences - Advanced, there's a checkbox for 'Copy files to iTunes folder when adding to library'. Try unchecking that.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 21 May 2004 17:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmmm...I know that option, but isn't that just for when you have the file elsewhere on your HD and want to play it in iTunes without making a duplicate? i want to just put in an MP3 CD and have it pop up as a separate playlist like a regular audio CD does. This doesn't seem like such a tall order.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 21 May 2004 17:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I think if you uncheck that and just add the files to your library, it will always look for those files on your cd drive (I'm assuming you're trying to get them off the cds and onto your iPod). (xpost: I guess not). But this should still work, once they're added to thelibrary, you can just play them from there.

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 21 May 2004 17:30 (twenty-one years ago)

itunes doesn't have drag-and-drop??

teeny (teeny), Friday, 21 May 2004 17:32 (twenty-one years ago)

you should just be able to stick it in your drive and have it pop up in the playlists column!

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 21 May 2004 17:34 (twenty-one years ago)

seems to work for me, anyway!

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 21 May 2004 17:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Not for me! (I'm not at home, so can't try this anyway)

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 21 May 2004 17:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Adam - yeah, I was kind of thinking it would work like kyle suggested. Does it definitely not? I guess iTunes is a bit fascist.

Yes teeny, you can drag and drop if you want, but iTunes works with this thing called a Library, which makes life great in so many ways, but it's kind of a pain if you just want to listen to something other than an audio CD just temporarily.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 21 May 2004 17:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I will try when I get home.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 21 May 2004 17:37 (twenty-one years ago)

What if I don't want to add these files to my library and just want to listen to data CDs?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 21 May 2004 17:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I know - I guess it's a drawback of the way iTunes works. Maybe they've allowed you to play data CDs in the way s1ocki says you can in a recent update - it doesn't work for me either.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 21 May 2004 17:40 (twenty-one years ago)

you have to add them to the library to listen to them. But if you don't copy them to your iTunes folder, you will be just listening to them as data cds. It should treat your CD drive like any other external drive.

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 21 May 2004 17:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, but if that does work (and I don't even know if it does - I guess I could get off my arse and try it) then it's still not ideal, as he then has to delete all the items from his library afterwards. Otherwise you'd be left with all these ghosty links to inaccessible tracks. Would that bugger up the shuffle all function, for example?

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 21 May 2004 17:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know.

It is lame if it doesn't show up as a playlist. Maybe you have to have a playlist burned onto the cd?

Otherwise, use some other MP3 playing program ...

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 21 May 2004 17:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Stop being a pussy, just copy it to your harddrive. Jesus.

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 21 May 2004 21:57 (twenty-one years ago)

NO

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 21 May 2004 22:03 (twenty-one years ago)

What do you have to lose? It's easy enough to delete them when you're done.

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 21 May 2004 22:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Obviously, you don't got MP3 worries like I do.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 21 May 2004 22:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Look, would it be easier if I popped them onto your library, listened to them, and then deleted them?

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 21 May 2004 22:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I doubt it.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 21 May 2004 22:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Myabe you could get an intern to do this for you? I'm just trying to figure out the issue here...

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 21 May 2004 22:08 (twenty-one years ago)

See, I am thinking of storing a large majority of my music on data CDs now, and I just want to pop them in and out and listen to them at my leisure without having to go through all the fuss of transferring/deleting files. Also, I have too many MP3s to keep on my HD. See now?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 21 May 2004 22:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Also I am fickle and change CDs a lot.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 21 May 2004 22:09 (twenty-one years ago)

it's still not ideal, as he then has to delete all the items from his library afterwards. Otherwise you'd be left with all these ghosty links to inaccessible tracks. Would that bugger up the shuffle all function, for example?

Buy me one, it's my birthday next week!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 21 May 2004 22:15 (twenty-one years ago)

stop using itunes and use something else.

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 21 May 2004 22:15 (twenty-one years ago)

it is not that great, as we have just discovered, if it doesn't do what you want it to do.

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 21 May 2004 22:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm unemployed, remember? Anyway I'm giving you those Brakhage DVDs for your birthday. If you ever get around to asking me for them, that is.

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 21 May 2004 22:15 (twenty-one years ago)

(That said, whenever I've burned something as a data CD with iTunes then it shows up in iTunes as a CD and you can play mp3s or aacs or whatever off it like you could play a regular CD. So I'm not sure exactly how you've broken it.)

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 21 May 2004 22:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Can I have those Brakhage DVDs please?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 21 May 2004 22:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Probably. I'll see if my roommate can make a copy. You'll need to send me your address and whatnot. Also when I play a show in Oakland (possibly in late July) you'll need to come and humor me.

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 21 May 2004 22:27 (twenty-one years ago)

What if you don't get British humor?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 21 May 2004 22:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry, British humour

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 21 May 2004 22:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, iTunes is designed as a hard disk jukebox. If you want to play your music off data CDs then a different kind of MP3 player is clearly the way forward.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 21 May 2004 22:38 (twenty-one years ago)

That's not what "humor me" means... oh! Oh, haha. Ha. Funny man.

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 21 May 2004 22:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Nooooooooooooo!

I love iTunes 'cept for this one issue. I would rather try and fix it.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 22 May 2004 13:54 (twenty-one years ago)

iTunes is one of the five best programs I've ever used.

And Adam continues to be a weirdo -- I just grabbed a CD of AACs that I burned a while back (in iTunes) and it's letting me play them, in iTunes, off the CD, just like Adam was hoping it would. So I thnk he's hiding whatever his real problem is.

It doesn't work with burned DVDs, apparently, though.

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 22 May 2004 18:56 (twenty-one years ago)

i just tried this with a cd of mp3s I burned with another program and it didn't work. so I think burning the cd with itunes is important. however, I can't seem to burn any cds with itunes (on my windows machine) because it takes for fucking ever. (well I haven't tried to burn data cds with itunes, I didn't know you could)

kyle (akmonday), Saturday, 22 May 2004 22:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, "data CDs" but all the data has to come from iTunes. If you burn an "mp3 CD" then AACs don't get burned onto it.

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 22 May 2004 22:37 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah you change the designation in prefs > burning

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 22 May 2004 22:38 (twenty-one years ago)

okay, yeah, I see no reason why burning a data cd with itunes from a playlist wouldn't work. but if you already have cds full of mp3s that someone burned as normal data cds with anything else, no playlist is present, so it won't work. I think @d@m was probably testing this with cds that someone sent him.

kyle (akmonday), Saturday, 22 May 2004 22:41 (twenty-one years ago)

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 23:32 (twenty-one years ago)

one month passes...
I've got an iTunes dilemma which I'm hoping someone can help with.

It stems from the fact that I've only got about 13GB of available memory on my laptop for my iTunes library, so if I want to fill more than a third of my iPod I've got to delete stuff from the library to put more stuff in there, and then manually transfer stuff over to the iPod rather than use the default automatic transfer.

This is fine (even if it's a bit more of a pain), but the problem is that I've already deleted a load of stuff from the library, and iTunes is still set to automatically sync with the iPod when it's connected up (which will obviously then delete all the tunes from the iPod which I've deleted from the library).

According to the manual you change the setting to manually transfer stuff by selecting the iPod in the Source list and then changing it. The problem is, it's got to be connected up to do this.

There must be a way of changing the setting to manually transfer songs without losing half of what's on the iPod at the moment, but I don't know what it is.

Please can anyone help?

If there was an iTunes library on there so I could change the setting, wouldn't it still auto-sync with that library (meaning I lost my tracks)? Or is there a way of getting round this?

Pleasant Plains, I could try that, but if it doesn't let me stop it then I'm fucked. But if you're confident it will let me then I could give that a go.

I'm just being a bit cautious as it'd mean having to reload about 100 albums if I mess it up.

James Ball (James Ball), Saturday, 26 June 2004 20:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Surely, you can turn off auto-sync without connecting the iPod?

deanomgwtf!!!p%3Fmsgid%3D4581997 (deangulberry), Saturday, 26 June 2004 20:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I would've thought so, and I'm probably being very stupid, but the manual says you do it by first selecting iPod in the Source list (which I'm pretty sure you can only do when it's connected).

But surely there must be a risk-free alternative way of doing it?

James Ball (James Ball), Saturday, 26 June 2004 21:23 (twenty-one years ago)

bump

James Ball (James Ball), Sunday, 27 June 2004 14:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Can anyone help further with my problem about switching to manual?

James Ball (James Ball), Monday, 28 June 2004 11:55 (twenty-one years ago)

if you hook it up to someone else's computer, it will say you are not linked to that library. (if you can't find someone, go to the apple store) it won't try and auto-update. change the ipod's settings. i already said this.

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 28 June 2004 12:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I could try that, but if it doesn't let me stop it then I'm fucked. But if you're confident it will let me then I could give that a go.

I am not confident it will let you. Oh, I wouldn't need that kind of guilt.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Monday, 28 June 2004 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks for clearing that up cutty, I'll give it a go. I was just worried it would auto-sync.

Hopefully that'll mean I can avoid Pleasant Plains' slightly riskier option.

James Ball (James Ball), Monday, 28 June 2004 15:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyone else having problems getting cd track names?

TheRealJMod (TheRealJMod), Monday, 28 June 2004 17:34 (twenty-one years ago)

no, unless you are listening to a cd-r of your little sister's band

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 28 June 2004 17:36 (twenty-one years ago)

that's impossible

TheRealJMod (TheRealJMod), Monday, 28 June 2004 17:37 (twenty-one years ago)

no one's getting a cddb 8x000-something error?

TheRealJMod (TheRealJMod), Monday, 28 June 2004 17:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I've only got about 13GB of available memory on my laptop for my iTunes library

Pet peeve alert:

MEMORY is not the same as a HARD DRIVE.

Context clues are your friend, but still... It's really not rocket science.

Sorry for the brief interruption.

martin m. (mushrush), Monday, 28 June 2004 22:16 (twenty-one years ago)

"It's really not rocket science."

No, but it is computer science, and that's tricky enough.

James Ball (James Ball), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 07:08 (twenty-one years ago)

It worked. Thanks Cutty, much appreciated.

James Ball (James Ball), Thursday, 1 July 2004 16:24 (twenty-one years ago)

WORD IS BUNG

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 1 July 2004 16:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Pet peeve alert:

hah, that's one of my pet peeves as well, everyone at my fucking office makes that mistake

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 1 July 2004 16:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I hope I didn't offend you James... I seriously wasn't calling you out on it. It's just a common substitution that irks me. I feel a little bad for making the comment and then not really helping you with your question, although I did figure cutty had you covered already when I read the other responses.

Heheh... On the other hand, I wouldn't call iTunes "computer science," but then I'm a little bit of a computer elitist.

martin m. (mushrush), Thursday, 1 July 2004 16:33 (twenty-one years ago)

jon:

2 choices.

the new itunes has a feature to mark albums as compilations, and then it will not list every artist separately.

OR

you can list the artist as "Various Artists" and put the artist AND song title where song title usually goes. that's my workaround, works good for the ipod. nothing i hate more than random comp artists strewn all over the place.

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 1 July 2004 16:35 (twenty-one years ago)

how does itunes handle various artist comps?

When you enter/download the tag info, there's a flag for comps. (It's a checkbox in the iTunes interface for "is part of a compilation.")

If that flag is true, iTunes notes the track number (X of Y) based on the compilation title. So if you display your collection by album, the comp tracks will be in the right order even if that means the artist names aren't alphabetical.

As far as I know you can still order tracks by artist and have the comp split up and show up listed under the individual artists by track if you want. Setting the flag just lets iTunes keep track of which tracks belong to which comps when you organize by album.

martin m. (mushrush), Thursday, 1 July 2004 16:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Smart Playlists is a fun little site. Don't click on it unless you really want to learn more about iPod playlists.

If you don't like what you see while it's loading, just hit the "stop" button at the top of your browser. :-)

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Thursday, 1 July 2004 17:36 (twenty-one years ago)

smart playlists are awesome.

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 1 July 2004 17:41 (twenty-one years ago)

three weeks pass...
iPod HELP please: I was listening to my iPod on the way to work today and the song just stopped. I pulled it out and the screen still has the song name and everything up, it wasn't paused or anything, but it was frozen. At first, when I pressed the buttons, they still made the clicking sounds, like it was registering it, but nothing happened when I pressed them, and now they've even stopped making the clicks. I'm hoping once I can get home and plug it into the base, that will "wake it up," but that's going to be like 9 hours from now and until then, I want to keep it from draining the battery. Is there some way I can turn it off, emergency bypass or something, until I can get it home if the buttons aren't responding? I kind of doubt it, but I'm asking anyways.

St. Nicholas (Nick A.), Friday, 23 July 2004 12:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyone?

St. Nicholas (Nick A.), Friday, 23 July 2004 13:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Um, it feels warm too. That doesn't make me feel good.

St. Nicholas (Nick A.), Friday, 23 July 2004 13:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Press and holding Play and Menu together for about 10 seconds resets it under normal circumstances. There's nothing else you can do till you get home, I don't think. Why are you keen to preserve the battery charge?

Alba (Alba), Friday, 23 July 2004 13:16 (twenty-one years ago)

you can do a force quit. i'm trying to find the key combination, but it's probably worth you looking at the same time, if you're freaking out.

also, describing something similar to you, maybe? http://tandoku.com/2004/February/the.ipod.is.clicking.and.whirring.php

NB: i am so not the best person to advise you on this, i've just had to force quit mine a couple times, and can't remember the key pattern to do it off the top of my head.

(xpost)

good luck!

colette (a2lette), Friday, 23 July 2004 13:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I just don't want the iPod to overheat or anything from being on for 8 hours straight. I don't know if that's a realistic concern. It doesn't respond to the menu/select being pressed down. All the buttons and screen are lit up.
I took it out of the sleeve and it seems to have cooled down to a normal temp though.

St. Nicholas (Nick A.), Friday, 23 July 2004 13:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Whoah, the play/menu combo just worked. I don't know why it didn't before, but it appears to be ok now. Weird. But thanks!

St. Nicholas (Nick A.), Friday, 23 July 2004 13:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Embarassingly enough, the song it was stuck on was "Feelin' on Your Booty" by R. Kelly.

St. Nicholas (Nick A.), Friday, 23 July 2004 13:25 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe your i-pod is becoming more sentient than everyone else's (they are *so* sentient), and objects to R...

glad to hear it sorted itself out though :)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 23 July 2004 14:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't lie nick, when you heard that song you pissed on the ipod.

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Friday, 23 July 2004 15:10 (twenty-one years ago)

your ipod will remain hot and vibratory until its twelfth birthday at which point it'll bloom into an ikea teakettle

j e r e m y (x Jeremy), Friday, 23 July 2004 15:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Try locking and unlocking it, and then pressing menu and play at the same time.

But don't press UP, UP, and X at the same time, or all you will do will be to unlock the tiger costume worn by Gorgar.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Friday, 23 July 2004 15:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not having any problems... I just want to GLOAT that my darling husband SURPRISED me Wednesday night with the VERY NEWEST MODEL iPOD, that he'd been checking the Seattle Apple store for DAILY for SOME TIME, apparently. God, this is the best thing since... Well, I can't actually think of a better thing right now. Wooooooooooo.

Layna Andersen (Layna Andersen), Friday, 23 July 2004 15:56 (twenty-one years ago)

four weeks pass...
I have a dozy question.

I bought an ipod in America a couple of weeks ago, and started importing songs there.

Now I'm back in the UK, at what will be the only PC I'm gonna be using with the ipod in the future. Itunes asked me if I want to sync it's library with my ipod, and I clicked 'no' because I didn't know if that means it will remove everything that's already on the ipod. Would it? Do I have to have the files on this PC to keep them on the ipod?

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Saturday, 21 August 2004 12:30 (twenty-one years ago)

yes it would remove everything there. go to the ipod settings (little ipod in lower right corner of itunes) and choose "Manually Manage Songs and Playlists". you will have to unmount your ipod whenever you want to disconnect it, but you can put albums/songs on there as you please.

cutty (mcutt), Saturday, 21 August 2004 12:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry, I'm really slow, but what does "you will have to unmount your ipod whenever you want to disconnect it" mean? And will I have to do it forever just to save these 300 or so songs?

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Saturday, 21 August 2004 12:40 (twenty-one years ago)

You're best off transferring the 300 songs to your PC. Otherwise it will always be a hassle. Apple software doesn't let you do this (I don't think). Have a search for bits of freeware or shareware that address this issue - I've never had to use them, but I know a lot of people have.

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 21 August 2004 12:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks, I'll do that.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Saturday, 21 August 2004 12:50 (twenty-one years ago)

You're on Windows, yeah?

Sharepod is a free one.

I want to tell iTunes to search my hard drive for music files and then have them come up in my songs list. Simple as that. Except it's not. How do I do this? I hate iTunes :(

Markelby (Mark C), Saturday, 11 September 2004 10:34 (twenty-one years ago)

"iTunes is better than you."

cºzen (Cozen), Saturday, 11 September 2004 10:52 (twenty-one years ago)

There's an option for doing this when you first install it; I'm not sure how you do it later. Isn't there an option under Preferences or maybe Advanced? (Also, does the PC version not come with help?)

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 11 September 2004 14:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Bumedy bump. I've been wondering about this too.
Also, is there no way to delete a song stored in the ipod without connecting to itunes?

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Sunday, 12 September 2004 15:32 (twenty-one years ago)

you need a really small screwdriver

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 12 September 2004 15:35 (twenty-one years ago)

two weeks pass...
Ok, I have an iTunes question!

I have a large music collection. I store much of it on a large cumbersome drive. I also like to drop PHAT BEATZ FOR DANCING sometimes. I do not wanna lug a 5 pound disk thingee with 30 gigs of Dead Kennedys boots just so I can play LCD Soundsystem crap for clueless college idiots. iTunes very happily lets me add stuff to my library while keeping it in the original location. However, is there a good way to move whole albums to what amounts to a second iTunes Library directory tree on my internal hard disk?

Professor Challenger (ex machina), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 18:09 (twenty-one years ago)

You mean apart from just dragging the album folder somewhere?

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 18:14 (twenty-one years ago)

well, then it will be missing from itunes and i'll have to browse to each track manually to find it.

plus it would be nice to have Artist folders wrapping all of them

maybe I need to learn applescript? :/

Professor Challenger (ex machina), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 18:19 (twenty-one years ago)

http://www.malcolmadams.com/itunes/scripts/ss.php?sp=putthiswhereiwantit

Or they might have something else that can help you out.

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 29 September 2004 18:24 (twenty-one years ago)

kisses!

Professor Challenger (ex machina), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 18:28 (twenty-one years ago)

(Yes, you can drag-and-drop a file directly from iTunes, but one doesn't always have the intended folder open, does one?)

oh shit dog!

Professor Challenger (ex machina), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 18:28 (twenty-one years ago)

ack, this just moves the mp3s there....

what's worse is that it copies them if the dest folder is on a different volume

Professor Challenger (ex machina), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 19:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Are you really pushed for space on your hard disk? If not, couldn't you drag over the artists folders you might want into a shared directory; set yourself up a new user account (thus creating a new iTunes Library); and then add the albums/tracks you need to your new Library (ie. getting iTunes to make yet another copy of all these in the new iTunes library hierarchy). When done, delete the stuff in the shared directory to save space.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 19:21 (twenty-one years ago)

that's crazy talk!

Ok solution:

move artist folder to internal disk from external
drag folder from int disk into iTunes
stuff should import ok -- sometimes long / weird song titles get mangled when reconstructing db info from the file
sort by "time added to itunes"
delete old entries from library

not too bad!

Professor Challenger (ex machina), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 19:24 (twenty-one years ago)

it would be great if you could have multiple libraries. I hope they implement that soon.

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 19:24 (twenty-one years ago)

alba OTM. that is exactly what i have set up on my laptop.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 19:26 (twenty-one years ago)

that's CRAZY u fuxxxx!

my solution = winnar

weird, about 1/3 of !!! mp3s had broken id3 tags

Professor Challenger (ex machina), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 19:30 (twenty-one years ago)

but since my itunes library is set as my external hd i have no choice if the hd were unplugged. itunes would inevitably search for those tracks, and then things get all fucked up. so instead i just have a separate account where my itunes folder is set as a folder on my hd, where i keep just a gig or two of mp3s. works for me.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 19:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I made ~/iTunes/iTunes Music Library/ a symlink to the actual library on my firewire drive. Not sure if an alias would work ....

Works like a fucking charm dude! it will prompt to find missing files but you can just hit cancel...

I AM TEH SMART

I wish I could figure out the bonared ID3 problem though....

Professor Challenger (ex machina), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 19:46 (twenty-one years ago)

ARRRRRGH.

i made some really good mixes for myself on my ancient office imac, using itunes. i didn't consider the fact that the imac will not connect to the ipod. i tried putting the songs on a zip disk and connecting the drive to my ibook, but the ibook won't recognize the files. itunes help doesn't seem to cover this. i'm getting really frustrated! it's not a big deal, but i'd rather not lose the music (a good amount of the stuff was from things since sold). um.. any thoughts?

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 19:49 (twenty-one years ago)

what happens when you try to open the files on the iBook? Are you running OS X?

Professor Challenger (ex machina), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 19:57 (twenty-one years ago)

gah, i wish itunes could make smart playlists based on Volume or Location.... I need DJ 1800 to only import stuff on my internal disk

Professor Challenger (ex machina), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 19:58 (twenty-one years ago)

yes, it's os x.. actually maybe even a slightly later update. when i open the drive icon, the files are there but shaded and thus inaccessible.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

you can't copy them to the hard disk? what happens? (not an os x expert)

Professor Challenger (ex machina), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 20:03 (twenty-one years ago)

can you access any other files on the drive?

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

haha update the permissions!! update the permissions!!

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 29 September 2004 20:07 (twenty-one years ago)

i can copy the files, but i can't access them. weird. i may just give up. as i said, it's not a huge amount of stuff.

xpost - k, lemme look into that.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 20:08 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, yea duh, tombot otm

you probably can just fix it by typing in admin password at the bottom of the apple i window

Professor Challenger (ex machina), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

revive! cos i'm proud new owner etc (resisted for a long time, but now i have on i love it). could someone help me out:
how do i upload songs from the ipod to itunes (on a mac). also, can i do it to itunes on my PC? IS it the same process?

paulhw (paulhw), Thursday, 30 September 2004 21:31 (twenty-one years ago)

You've just bought an iPod and already you're wanting to transfer things from the iPod to your computer? How did this happen?

Anyway, it's supposed to be a one-way process only - it synchs with what's in one (and only one) computer. However, there are third-party hacks to get around this if you need to. The same question was asked upthread re:Windows (on Aug 21st). There are equivalents for Mac. Have a look on some shareware site or ipodlounge - shouldn't be too hard to find. I can't recommend any, as I've never had to use one.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 30 September 2004 21:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I just hit the breaking point. I'm about to deposit checks from the last couple of gigs and I think I'm going to go blow it all on an iPod.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 30 September 2004 22:14 (twenty-one years ago)

i got one last week! i love it!!! best gadget i've had in ages. i recommend you go forth and consume jordan.

gem (trisk), Friday, 1 October 2004 00:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I did it!!! I can't believe I just up and did that shit. I got a 20 gig, and more than I meant to spend because I got the CompUSA replacement plan and the iTrip. S'all good though, now I just have to get my tunes on it. My iTunes works slow as hell when it's plugged it.

How come when I enter change the id3 tag for tunes and enter the album it won't let me start it with a capital letter?!

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 1 October 2004 04:23 (twenty-one years ago)

It lets me start album names with a capital so i don't know the answer to your question, sorry. i have spent heaps on mine as well to extend the warranty and buying a little case etc etc etc. but i am totally addicted to it!! i have most of my cds on there (that's a bit time consuming in itself) and it's only about half full!

gem (trisk), Friday, 1 October 2004 05:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I know the problem Jordan means. It happens when it tries to Autocomplete with the name it already finds in its database (ie. the one with the rogue lower case letter)

You just need to trick it into thinking you're typing something else (by, say, all of the title except for the first letter) then go back after you've finished (with the mouse or arrow keys) and adding the first letter.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 1 October 2004 05:16 (twenty-one years ago)

aaaah yes i see what you mean, or i guess you could go back and change the one that's causing the autocomplete. if you know which one it is.... probably the first entry of that album in the library?

gem (trisk), Friday, 1 October 2004 05:22 (twenty-one years ago)

No, because it could well just be the one you're changing there and then, as it stays in the database until the change is completed. I suppose in this case you could just change it to something rubbish and then change it again, as another option.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 1 October 2004 05:30 (twenty-one years ago)

ok, seriously, fuck an ipod.

my screen has started cutting out (wtf?) when I press the play button and also, at other times, when I press the other buttons. any ideas? something loose inside? maybe a bit damp? (it has been raining a lot.)

cºzen (Cozen), Friday, 1 October 2004 08:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks Alba.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 1 October 2004 11:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh sweet, now iTunes is importing files from cd at like 9x, last night it was .9x, I don't know what was going on.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 1 October 2004 11:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh dear. My iPod is very sick. It's a little over a year old (ie. out of warranty).

I've never been convinced that I've been getting anything like 8 hours out of a battery charge. Maybe six, as long as I didn't leave it (asleep) for more than a night.

But I hadn't noticed it deteriorate either. But the last couple of weeks, it seems totally fucked. I charge it up. Sometimes I even disconnect when it says charged and then reconnect, just to be sure it's fully charged. The battery meter says it's full. I use it. After about an hour or so, it's down about a third of the way. Not too bad. But then it just cuts out completely. The 'No battery power remains - please reconnect to computer' message flashes up and that's it.

This can't be regular depletion, can it?

The point is - will getting the battery replaced solve the problem, do you think? Or is this suggestive of some fault with the iPod itself. I don't really understand battery technology - are there individualy cells, many of which might have failed in some way, leaving just one operative or something?

I don't want to waste my money buying a new battery only to find it makes no difference. AAARGH!

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 18:08 (twenty years ago)

Oh - and I just tried resetting it, which I hadn't tried before. It seems to come back to life, with the time reset to 12:00, and the battery meter at zero, but slowly creeping up to where it was when it cut out. Weird. Going to leave it running some more and see if it cuts out again.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 18:33 (twenty years ago)

Check in anytime you like, Alba, but YOU CAN NEVER LEAVE.

The battery meter is never even close to being accurate. Are you listening to playlists or albums? For a reason that would best be described by someone who knew better than I, the battery gets used up much more when listening to any music put into a certain sequential order. (The iPod has spends part of its resources "looking ahead" to cover for any glitches.)

Mine was doing this, too, even after one hour. I realized that some of the ten-minute songs in my hour-long playlists might've been messing with it some. I tried it without the long songs, and it's acted better. I really couldn't tell you if this is going to work in your circumstance, though.

So, um, good luck with that.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 18:36 (twenty years ago)

Playlists. And not longer songs than I used to. That's the thing - my listening habits haven't really changed in any way I can think of, yet suddenly I have this problem. I thought the meter inaccuracy wouldn't affect the thing actually stopping and deciding it was out of juice.

x-post I agree, actually. Just positing alternatives.

Smokin' funk by the boxes (kenan), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 18:58 (twenty years ago)

My iPod is a secure in a black leather case thing now because it was getting scratched all to hell in my pocket. It sort of takes away from the elegance, but at least I won't get any more scuff marks on the screen.

I also returned the iTrip because it worked in everyone else's car but mine (shitty FM receiver I guess) and got the cassette adapter instead.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 19:00 (twenty years ago)

since this morning, i haven't been able to get my click wheel to scroll at all. i can click on play/pause, menu, forwards, and backwards, but the scroll function is useless -- my ipod is stuck at top volume and there's no way to turn it down.

i tried resetting; it wouldn't reset. i disconnected, reconnected, toggled the hold switch, updated the songs -- it didn't make any difference.

any advice, short of restoring the damn thing altogether?

I mean no one any personal pain, but I am always amused when the Hot New Item turns out to be a poorly made piece of crap.

Smokin' funk by the boxes (kenan), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 19:29 (twenty years ago)

I'm just glad I have a two-warranty, so at the first sign of wonkiness I'm just getting me a new iPod, damnit.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 19:32 (twenty years ago)

I am quite happy to accept that the iPod currently has some serious reliability issues. However, when it's working it's so good that I can't be too angry.

I was going to ask if it is still worth buying. I need something to play my mp3s on.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 19:35 (twenty years ago)

it's not a piece of crap. i'm really happy with it. but the technology is new and imperfect... whaddya gonna do?

Germany's Fun-Loving Beer (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 19:36 (twenty years ago)

I just wish I'd bought mine in John Lewis so I would have had a two year warranty as standard. I did go there, but couldn't see them and assumed they didn't sell them. I think they did, even then, but I was just not looking in the right place. I should have asked a sales assistant. Always ask a sales assistant.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 19:37 (twenty years ago)

but anyway if someone can help me it would save me a trip to the "genius bar."

Germany's Fun-Loving Beer (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 02:34 (twenty years ago)

You know, it just occurred to me that I had this problem once. It was very brief though. I was out on a walk, and it wouldn't respond. I just kept messing with it, which I assume you have more than done here. Maybe rub your socks on the carpet and then try it.

This is actually really bad advice. All I wanted to say was that it happened to me, and it came back to life after a bit of futzing. I couldn't tell you what to do to accompolish this, unfortunately.

Cynthia Nixon Now More Than Ever (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 07:35 (twenty years ago)

We managed to get a two-year-old iPod, one that couldn't hold a charge overnight even when it was turned off, running again at about 70% of its original charge capacity simply by installing a firmware update.

It's true! No replacement battery, third-party or otherwise; no hardware replacement or adjustment of any kind. All we did was search through Apple's support forums and tech notes, which told us that one of the iPod software updates (we forget which; maybe 1.2.6?) addressed a battery life problem, and that several people who had lost most of their battery capacity got it back after doing a restore of their iPods to the new firmware version. It seemed to work for some people and not for others, but after a bit of research, it seemed that most people had luck if they performed the restore after letting their iPod battery discharge to the point where it was completely and totally dead-- meaning, there wasn't even enough charge left to display the battery warning icon when a button was pushed.

So we played our iPod right into the ground, and when it was dead, dead, dead, we plugged it in and did the big, scary restore. (A restore actually wipes all the music and data off the 'Pod, but since the magic of FireWire lets us fill our 5 GB iPod in about ten minutes, it was really no big deal.) When we were done with the update, we threw a little music back on the 'Pod, let it charge for a few hours, unplugged it-- and played it for about six and a half hours straight. And it's been fine ever since. Well, actually, the capacity does keep lessening over time; it's probably down to about five hours, now, but that's to be expected with a battery. It's just that a lot of the "dead" iPod batteries out there probably aren't dead at all-- just resting. Beautiful plumage.

Since we originally mentioned that procedure, we've heard from three AtAT viewers who have resuscitated "dead" iPod batteries the same way, based on our suggestion. So it's not just us. Again, it may not work for everybody, but clearly it works for some people. If you've got an iPod that's similarly afflicted, you might consider trying a restore with the latest iPod software updater after running the battery all the way down-- at least before you plunk down $50 for an install-it-yourself battery or $100 for Apple to do it for you.

Cynthia Nixon Now More Than Ever (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 07:46 (twenty years ago)

Thanks - I'd already thought of that and given it a try, though. I might see if going back to an old firmware version (ie. the one that came on the CD with my iPod) is possible and helpful.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 08:05 (twenty years ago)

This may be old news to some of you but I read on a forum the other day that the volume levels of iPods sold in the EU have been capped (loud mp3s must make the bananas bend too much to slide down the butter mountain or something).

There is a hack available here to remove the cap > http://www.pochoirs.de/leechs/iMod.zip

Taken from this German site > http://www.pochoirs.de/software_es.htm - the Google translator says that this mod will "Killt the European Laustaerkebeschraenkung iPods. Small and powerfully!"

I'd sniff around some more reliable sites/forums before installing - just to make sure the thing actually works.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 14:13 (twenty years ago)

So obviously the iPod/iTunes random function isn't random, it seems to work based on how many plays each song has or something. Is there a way to clear how many plays each song has so that random is more random?

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 14:14 (twenty years ago)

No, it is random. Or as random as computers generally can be. Humans are good at spotting patterns, though.

when it happened to me it was dead. i tried reinstalling the software and even doing the more advanced diagnostic stuff, and nothing worked. basically the exclamation point-folder error, from what i can tell, means that there are physical problems with the harddrive.

three months pass...
My ipod is almost two years old and though I charge it to full overnight it only seems to last about two hours at work. Also the display says that the battery is half-full and then when I switch it off and then on again, all the juice has disappeared. Do I need a new battery? How and where and how much?

And what IS "ipod updating"?

.ada.m. (nordicskilla), Monday, 24 January 2005 20:33 (twenty years ago)

I think there's an ILM thread about this.

Short answer: yes, you probably need a new battery. You have to send it to Apple, and they'll replace it for $99.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 24 January 2005 20:57 (twenty years ago)

.ada.m. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 27 January 2005 00:05 (twenty years ago)

You need to defrag the iPod's hard disk first. This is a safe, "easy" way to do it but there's a faster one I'll describe below from memory:

http://homepage.mac.com/paalb/iPod/iPod2.html

My learned method, I didn't make this up and it's from memory so don't beat me:

0. Create a playlist which has all the songs you want/have on the iPod (optional duh)
1. Create a playlist that has nothing in it. NOTHING.
2. tell iTunes that's the playlist you want it to update into the iPod automatically when you plug it in or whatever
3. Do this. Erases all the songs! Awesome.
4. tell iTunes to stop doing that after you verify the iPod is totally blank
5. Refill the iPod using whatever other playlist you like, maybe that one from the optional step above would be a good idea.

See if that doesn't help.

TOMBOT, Thursday, 27 January 2005 00:12 (twenty years ago)

help with what? battery?

Can't I just use disk utility?

.ada.m. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 27 January 2005 00:13 (twenty years ago)

As you add/delete songs on the iPod some tracks will be split across different sectors on the hard drive, this means the read/write head has to jump all over the surface of the disk to do its job during playback and that saps battery life.

TOMBOT, Thursday, 27 January 2005 00:14 (twenty years ago)

Apple doesn't like you to defragment the iPod for some reason.

TOMBOT, Thursday, 27 January 2005 00:15 (twenty years ago)

That's why you can't use Disk Utility, I think.

TOMBOT, Thursday, 27 January 2005 00:15 (twenty years ago)

Because they suck and want you to buy a new battery instead.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 27 January 2005 00:16 (twenty years ago)

yeah, but you could use disk utility to format it. also you could use a program like diskwarrior to defrag it.

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 27 January 2005 00:16 (twenty years ago)

Aaaah, it has been doing this more since I erased everything on there and re-filled it with other music. No coincidence?

You CAN'T use Disk Utility? It looks like I can.

.ada.m. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 27 January 2005 00:17 (twenty years ago)

yes you certainly can use disk utility.

Okay, my girlfriend bought an iPod the other night and we just cannot get iTunes to recognize it. She installs iTunes from scratch, formats the iPod, and yet when the iPod is plugged in it gives this error: "The software required for communicating with the iPod is not installed correctly. Please reinstall iTunes to install the iPod's software." My iTunes recognizes her iPod. WTF?!

Because we had already tried their recommendations, Jon (most of which involved resetting and re-installing iTunes).

Jordan (Jordan), Sunday, 3 April 2005 12:19 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...
ok, ok. everyone is allowed to point and laugh at how dumb i am. but i've got some very basic itunes questions. which is silly, since i've been using it for several years.

basically, i've got an old ipod that went with my dell laptop. i got an external USB 2.0 harddrive to keep my music on, since my dell didn't have enough space for music. that worked ok.

so now i've got my lovely new powerbook. i've got some music on the powerbook, mostly stuff i've downloaded or ripped, just for my shuffle.

i've been putting off figuring out how to put the music on my powerbook, since i made a mess of it last time. basically, i'd like suggestions on the best way to essentially start from scratch, so it's more organised. i'll be re-formatting the pod this weekend to use it when i'm back in the states, and will need to reinstall all the music.

currently, when i download music, it goes to a soulseek folder, or download folder, depending. even if i drag it to the itunes folder, the music doesn't appear(is that normal? why is that?) i have to highlight newly downloaded songs and drag them into the library while itunes is open. i've got the setting so it copies music to the itunes library folder, but can change it if people suggest it.

i think i'd like to keep most of my music on the external drive, and only use it when i'm updating my pod, which isn't that often. can i add a folder there as a library? can i have a separate library that's just looking at the external drive, so i don't have greyed out songs that i can't listen to most of the time?

hmm. not sure this post makes any sense, but i thought i'd ask for advice before i just start muddling along. i clearly don't understand how itunes works, even though i use it nearly every day. any suggestions for the best way of organising things are welcome, and sorry about the super long post!

colette (a2lette), Friday, 22 April 2005 09:22 (twenty years ago)

Hmmm, I'm not sure I understand this... Why can't you specifiy set your external HD as the location of your library?

I used to have all my stuff on an external HD but I would download to a specific folder in my C: drive. Then I would juste add files and folders with iTunes, which in turn would automatically transfer them to my external HD (where the organized iTunes folder was).

Baaderonixxxorzh (Fabfunk), Friday, 22 April 2005 09:36 (twenty years ago)

mostly because generally my laptop isn't attached to the external drive-- i wander around the living room, which will get even worse once i've got a wireless network, and the HD is sitting on a table in the corner. i seem to remember that if i do that, there will be several thousand songs listed on my itunes with tiny error messages next to them, since the external drive isn't connected.

is there any way of having multiple libraries, so i can only look at the library that's on my laptop when i'm not hooked up to the external drive, and another for playing with my pod?

colette (a2lette), Friday, 22 April 2005 09:41 (twenty years ago)

I see... maybe you could install another iTunes on the external HD, which you would use when hooked to it

Baaderonixxxorzh (Fabfunk), Friday, 22 April 2005 11:03 (twenty years ago)

ok, here's my question, which i'm sure is really really dumb - if i move track around on my hard drive, how do i get itunes to find them again, and not just have annoying exclaimation marks next to them? basically i'd like itunes to scan my hard drive every 24 hours and update the library, i guess. is this possible?

toby (tsg20), Friday, 22 April 2005 11:36 (twenty years ago)

Having a big problem with iPod and iTunes...I have looked on Apple's support site which is "surpringly" unhelpful and might've made the problem actually worse when I followed their advice...

Basically, I haven't done anything to my computer in a while. The only thing that has occurred recently on my computer is:
1) Word processing files added doing work for school.
2) Ripped a CD on saturday night.
3) Upgraded OS to 10.3.9 about a week to two weeks ago (forget exact date)

Suddenly, as of yesterday (remember, OS upgrade was over a week ago and I have used iTunes and plugged in my iPod since then), iTunes does not want to work if my iPod is plugged in. If my iPod is not plugged in, it opens fine. If it is plugged in, it immediately quits. I followed their advice to rebuild the library (with iPod unplugged, obviously, because program wouldn't start with iPod in--I didn't realize at the time that the problem was to do with the status of the iPod though, I ejected it before doing library work), and discovered that SINCE I did that, my iPod was apparently completely wiped the second I plugged it back into the laptop. So not only can I not add songs to my iPod because iTunes won't speak to it, I don't have anything on my iPod anymore, the thing seems to have been reformatted, mysteriously, at some point after I rebuilt the iTunes library.

WTF? This was working as of Saturday (last time I opened iTunes before yesterday--iPod was plugged in at the time and it worked just fine). I have NOT reinstalled iTunes yet, should I do this? Can this actually be related to the system upgrade, I know that has been causing people problems--but like I said, it was working just fine for at least a WEEK after I did the upgrade. No other programs are acting oddly at all, just iTunes. In the event that I can't fix this easily, is there any way to manually add the songs back to my iPod from the finder, without using iTunes? My desktop is recognizing it just fine, but when I open it from the finder there's no longer a clearly marked folder where you'd find music files, it just has the "notes" folder and nothing else and I'm scared to fuck with it.

I'm going to copy/paste the crash report here so more technically astute people can look at it, maybe this will tell something. AFAIK the APE manager is up to date unless there has been something released v. recently. I haven't done anything wrong, the traditional things they tell you not to do like not ejecting the iPod properly or something like that--it just stopped working all of a sudden, yesterday, with no changes to the system whatsoever done on Sunday or Monday at all.

Allyzay do not obtain to make download of yours MP3 (allyzay), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 19:36 (twenty years ago)

Actually, I just realized something--my iPod wasn't wiped. There's something wrong with it. The files are all still on it, I just can't find them at all, but looking in the finder it's indicating that the available space is still the same as it was last week.

Help? It appears to have made all the files hidden, including from the iPod? It claims, when I try to play songs, that there are no songs on it.

Allyzay do not obtain to make download of yours MP3 (allyzay), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 19:39 (twenty years ago)

I just browsed the Apple message boards and it looks like a lot of people have been having trouble with the latest update hatin' on their iPods. Here's a big thread on it (http://discussions.info.apple.com/webx?14@608.kNEeafOCSCx.1@.68ac6a43) that may or not have the answer.

From that thread:

"Okay now, what I found in doing this myself is that you CAN keep your library if you go into the hard drive and erase iTunes 4.71 and then download iTunes 4.70. (DO NOT TOUCH THE MUSIC ITSELF)
-After that, erase your iPod updates and the software associated with them.
-Once all of that is done, you can then download the iPod update from 11-15-04 (if ou can find it online).
-Restore the iPod, and update it using the November update.
-Once all of that is done, try plugging the iPod into iTunes and you shouldn't see any more problems. If you ARE still having problems, it may be that the iPod itself was corrupted and it needs to be replaced (which happened with my 6th iPod.) "

And here's the link for the November update he's talking about
.
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/ipodupdater20041115.html

Someone also mentioned something about unplugging FireWire devices? I just skimmed the discussion, but maybe look into that, too.

stephen morris (stephen morris), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 21:55 (twenty years ago)

thank you--I'm going to try that later tonight or tomorrow, depending on when I get the rest of the work done that I'm trying to do. It sounds like my problem is exactly what they are describing on the site. I only have one firewire port though so the firewire devices advice probably won't help.

Given this thread's title I'm guessing this is as good a place as any to ask: Is there a way to add/rename a Category to/in the View Options list?

Specifically I'd like add one called "Label" and maybe drop/replace one I never use like Kind or Description.

I finally bit the bullet and bought and iPod, and now I can't get iTunes to run properly - it installs, when I try to click the icon all I get is the message 'The folder iTunes cannot be found or created, and is required. The default location for this folder is inside the My Music folder.'

I've looked in My Music, and said folder is actually there. Has this happened to anyone else?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 21:32 (nineteen years ago)

No.

'you' vs. 'radio gnome invisible 3' FITE (ex machina), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 21:38 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah that seems a bit odd. You should locate the iTunes folder and move it to inside My Music. If there is no iTunes folder try creating one as a blank folder.

My iPod won't work on my home PC without me (presumably) updating the BIOS and re-installing XP. I can't be bothered to do that so am just copying tracks to it on the work PC.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 21:52 (nineteen years ago)

I think this might be because I've moved the My Music folder around a bit recently - off and on the desktop mainly. Is it possible the registry's lost track of where my default folder is?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 22:14 (nineteen years ago)

Try putting the iTunes folder in My Music and put My Music back into the default My Documents folder (use a shortcut on the desktop instead of keeping the actual folder on the desktop - the latter is unwise generally).

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 23:01 (nineteen years ago)

those special folders are called shell folders and it can be troublesome to move them around. i think you have to do it in windows explorer, and hold a right click as you drag, then release the mouse button at the new location, and select 'move here' from the context menu which appears.

although since you've already moved it, and not in that fashion, it might be messed up. possibly you can use tweak to regain control of the my music location (?)

ronny longjohns (ronny longjohns), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 06:14 (nineteen years ago)

What is this tweak of which you speak?

Argh. This is really fucking annoying. How do I possibly get it to recognise the My Music folder? Is it even worth asking Apple?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 21:43 (nineteen years ago)

Right, I think I'm getting there - according to TweakUI I have no special My Music folder, just a normal one with that name and a load of MP3s in it. This is, I assume, why iTunes won't recognise it and install properly. I have My Documents, My Picutres, My Video but no My Music. Question is, how do I create one?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 22:59 (nineteen years ago)

Anyone?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 1 December 2005 12:21 (nineteen years ago)

couldn't you just copy that folder you have and paste it. then delete the original?

bingo (Chris V), Thursday, 1 December 2005 12:28 (nineteen years ago)

im assuming you've already tried this.

bingo (Chris V), Thursday, 1 December 2005 12:29 (nineteen years ago)

or try this:
Start --> Run then type "regedit" and hit enter. Once in the registry editor, pick HKEY_CURRENT_USER --> Software --> Microsoft --> Windows --> Explorer --> Shell Folders, and edit the "My Music" to be your default music folder (for me it's C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Desktop\My Music). Do the same in "User Shell Folders" which is also under Explorer... then reinstall itunes.

bingo (Chris V), Thursday, 1 December 2005 12:33 (nineteen years ago)

The special behaviour of the 'My Music' folder is bestowed upon whichever folder is set in the registry under HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Explorer/User Shell Folders/

To restore the icon (if it's missing), use Start->Run and enter "rundll32 mydocs.dll,PerUserInit".

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Thursday, 1 December 2005 12:34 (nineteen years ago)

Okay, sorted all that out (I think) and now...

"iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience".

You'd think, for such a massive consumer product, that they'd manage to sort out software that ISN'T SUCH A FUCKING PIECE OF COMPLETE SHIT.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Saturday, 3 December 2005 00:43 (nineteen years ago)

Ahem. Now, how do I get past this particular trial then?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Saturday, 3 December 2005 00:44 (nineteen years ago)

hell, i don't know. if you've succeeded at restoring 'my music', then it will be the folder which opens when you click the icon/shortcut in the start menu (start menu- properties- advanced - "my music" show as a link)

so if you've got that working, did you then reinstall itunes?

ronny longjohns (ronny longjohns), Saturday, 3 December 2005 04:18 (nineteen years ago)

Matt, I dunno, but googling that error message lead to a possible solution.

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 11:46 (nineteen years ago)

xpost to Aaron, download the latest itunes and iPod updater from Apple. It should fix the problem.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 11:50 (nineteen years ago)

nrq you can't copy the files via itunes, it only lets you play other libraries that are shared. BUT if you're leeching the dude's wifi, I'll bet you can search the network, find where he keeps his library and copy to your PC manually.

waldo jeffers scenario (haitch), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 12:05 (nineteen years ago)

You can copy from iTunes shares using a number of programs that people have hacked together for that purpose. Try searching for "mytunes" or "ourtunes" depending on what platform you're on. Or just Google for "download from itunes share".

Recently played = smart playlist with "last played" within the last week/whenever?
Top 25 = playcount>1, limit to 25 selected by most often played?

are there any third party firmwares out there that I can use instead of iTunes?

heavyweight grebt (sanskrit), Tuesday, 8 August 2006 18:57 (nineteen years ago)

i wonder if there is some kind of 3rd-party add-on that i can use to generate playlists based on the "album" field without having to do it manually for each album. i lost all my playlists and it would take me forever to make new ones... (i have 10000 songs)

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 04:05 (nineteen years ago)

I'm not sure I follow you... you want a different playlist for each album? That would give you a list of playlists no less unwieldy than the big list of tracks in the library, wouldn't it? Anyway, do you use a Mac? If so, one of the scripts at Doug's AppleScripts for iTunes might help.

Pls pls pls! i know it's a boring question that who can be botherred to answer right but i'd do it for you.... i really would

Uptoeleven, Friday, 20 July 2007 15:49 (eighteen years ago)

1. Select everything in your iTunes window and delete it. When it asks if you want it to move everything to the trash/recycling bin, DON'T do it!.

2. Do a spotlight search (or "Find files/folders" if you are using windows) for ".mp3" Select everything in the results window and drag it into iTunes.

If you have the hard drive space, after step one I would go into iTunes prefs/advanced and select "Keep iTunes Music folder organized" and "Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library. Then, do step 2 (it will copy all the tracks into your iTunes Music folder), and then drag all those files from Spotlight/Find into the trash/recycling bin. iTunes does a pretty good job of keeping organized folders of all your music.

schwantz, Friday, 20 July 2007 16:04 (eighteen years ago)

Ooo - if you have other formats (mp4, m4a, wav, aiff, etc), you must repeat these steps for them too. Unfortunately, WAV and AIFF metadata is stored in your library file, so you may lose it when you do this.

My father-in-law just gave me his son's unused iPod (haha, it had Bob Marley's Legend, a Doors best of, and Led Zepplin IV, and that's it).

ANYWAY, it was formatted for Windows & I have a Mac. So, here's what Apple tells me to do to restore it to factory settings (is this even what I'd want to do? From everything I've read, I understand this is the correct path.):

• Select your iPod in the Source panel and you will see information about your iPod appear in the Summary tab of the main iTunes windows.

So far so good, coming up just as described...but THEN:

• Click the Restore button. You will be prompted with one or more restore options that may prompt iTunes to automatically download the latest iPod Software.

And that's what the Summary tab tells me to do, as well. The problem is: there is no restore button. Uh...what?

So, could anyone help me through this or guide me to another way to make this usable on my Mac?

Abbott, Tuesday, 31 July 2007 23:57 (eighteen years ago)

I tied installing the updater program too. It's giving me this message:

iPod 2 Software cannot be installed on this computer. This update requires the Mac OS X Networking Update.

And the Apple site says this in their FAQ:

This can happen with any Mac with Mac OS X 10.4 or later when you try to use older iPod software. To avoid this, download and install the latest iPod Updater.

AND the link takes me to download iTunes 7.3.1, which I did, and no dice...the updater still isn't working.

Have you tried scrolling down in the iPod settings pane? I don't have iTunes here to check, but I remember that catching me out a few times. I don't think you need to download the updater separately anymore either -- iPod v. 2 is pretty out-of-date now.

YAY! That did it. I feel like a silly now, but thx for the help stet! :)

the iPod Updater is a truly, truly horrid piece of software. i don't even want to remember the nightmare i had with it. heap of fucking shit.

four months pass...

anyone have any experience with ip0d c0py software? or any other good way to prevent auto synching?

lauren, Sunday, 23 December 2007 16:30 (seventeen years ago)

can't you just turn synching off?

akm, Sunday, 23 December 2007 16:31 (seventeen years ago)

i want to set up my new ipod now but i don't have my computer with me. i'm pretty sure that i'll lose anything i've put on it when i sync it to my own itunes.

lauren, Sunday, 23 December 2007 16:43 (seventeen years ago)

but hmm... i think you're right about turning syncing off and just using the manual option. it's been over a year since i've had an ipod, and i've forgotten everything. i'm acting like an 80 yr old woman.

lauren, Sunday, 23 December 2007 16:46 (seventeen years ago)

when you get to your computer, just turn auto synching off in itunes before you attach the ipod, and I think you'll be fine (xpost)

akm, Sunday, 23 December 2007 16:46 (seventeen years ago)

also, don't forget to change those depends

akm, Sunday, 23 December 2007 16:47 (seventeen years ago)

DG, Sunday, 23 December 2007 16:54 (seventeen years ago)

Keep a copy on your iPod. Takes a little getting used to, but completely worth it. I use it exclusively, but it plays nicely aside iTunes, if that's how you roll.

seven months pass...

I just bought my wife a Nano, and I'm trying to set it up. iTunes installed on her PC easily, and it was a breeze to connect the Nano to the PC for the first time.

But now it's been a few hours and the Nano still just says "Connected." No songs have been transferred (I burned four discs to the new iTunes to test the Nano), and I can't get beyond the "Connected" screen on the Nano. Should I just let it continue charging? If so, when has it charged enough? Or should I disconnect it and begin the process again?

Thanks.

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 27 July 2008 22:58 (seventeen years ago)

you have to 'eject' it from itunes to use it

DG, Sunday, 27 July 2008 23:00 (seventeen years ago)

Thanks! Two follow-ups: (a) By "eject it," do you mean just disconnect it from the USB portal (or is there some other, more involved process I have to go through) and, once I eject it, (b) plug it in again?

Sorry to be so thick-headed. I'm not terribly tech-savvy.

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 27 July 2008 23:02 (seventeen years ago)

once you've dumped what music you want on it, if you look on the bar on the left in itunes you'll see next to an icon of yr ipod a little eject symbol - click it then unplug yr ipod, you'll be able so scroll through all the menus etc

DG, Sunday, 27 July 2008 23:04 (seventeen years ago)

Thanks!

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 27 July 2008 23:05 (seventeen years ago)

Gah. I "ejected the disc," but it didn't transfer any of the music files. Any further guidance is appreciated.

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 27 July 2008 23:24 (seventeen years ago)

you have to "drag" the "music" to the "nano"

Mr. Que, Sunday, 27 July 2008 23:27 (seventeen years ago)

or uncheck "manually manage music and videos" (should be on the main screen for the ipod), then it will copy over new songs automatically.

ledge, Sunday, 27 July 2008 23:28 (seventeen years ago)

Not sure what you mean. I inserted four discs, and when the icon appeared asking if I wanted to import them to the nano, I clicked "yes." (I also downloaded one song from iTunes, just to test it). Then, I followed the steps DG kindly suggested. After ejecting the iPod, I didn't have any music files on it.

Do I have to drag the music to the nano beyond what I did?

--Ah--. I'll check out the support site. Thanks (and thanks to ledge; I'll try that now).

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 27 July 2008 23:28 (seventeen years ago)

Do I have to drag the music to the nano beyond what I did?

yes

Mr. Que, Sunday, 27 July 2008 23:29 (seventeen years ago)

the icon appeared asking if I wanted to import them to the nano

yeah that will import to the library on the computer, then you move stuff to the ipod

DG, Sunday, 27 July 2008 23:31 (seventeen years ago)

Thanks again. I was able to manually transfer the songs to the nano (by "dragging and dropping" them). I'd much rather have everything sync automatically, but so far, I haven't been able to set up auto syncing (put differently, the "manually manage music and videos" option isn't anywhere to be found on my nano (as far as I can see); under Edit --> Preferences --> Syncing, there's an unchecked icon for "Disable automatic syncing for all iPhones and iPods," but it doesn't seem right to check and uncheck that box, and I don't see anything else fitting ledge's description).

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 28 July 2008 00:25 (seventeen years ago)

in the bar on the left there's a 'devices' heading and and yr ipod will be underneath it - click on it and you'll get a status screen w/ a picture of yr ipod, you'll find the relevant check box there (as well as a 'sync' button, bottom right)

DG, Monday, 28 July 2008 00:35 (seventeen years ago)

Have you tried selecting the icon of the iPod, in the left-hand column of iTunes, by clicking on it? That should give you lots of options.

xpost

Tracer Hand, Monday, 28 July 2008 00:36 (seventeen years ago)

i thought it'd be set to sync by default

DG, Monday, 28 July 2008 00:38 (seventeen years ago)

I think auto-sync should be the default setting, DG. Not sure why it isn't (or if it's something I did -- unwittingly -- to alter the default). Tracer, I think I tried that, but I'll try again.

three weeks pass...

What's a good free solution to get music from an ipod to the computer, using Windows (I know the answer for a Mac, but this is for my parents...)?

toby, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 17:09 (seventeen years ago)

there is a program that used to be called 'podutil' but is now called 'music rescue'.

akm, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 17:16 (seventeen years ago)

Can you no longer show hidden files and folders, then navigate to the iPod_Control directory?

HI DERE, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 17:18 (seventeen years ago)

This is surely a ridiculous question but how do I rename my On The Go playlists when iTunes is up and running? I have tried souble/triple/quadruple clicking, right clicking, etc.. am I doomed to navigate to On The Go 7 whenever I need a Creedence fix?

Finefinemusic, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 17:45 (seventeen years ago)

Can you no longer show hidden files and folders, then navigate to the iPod_Control directory?

i had no idea this ever worked...the one time I looked inside my ipod the files were not named in a straighforward way and not in any kind of order.

akm, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 17:53 (seventeen years ago)

^ this

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 17:55 (seventeen years ago)

If they're all tagged appropriately, the filename doesn't really matter.

HI DERE, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 18:01 (seventeen years ago)

but if you're just looking to pull a few files off, it is not a feasible solution. if you're trying to get everything off I suppose it's fine.

akm, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 18:03 (seventeen years ago)

I did the following:

1. Point Winamp at the iPod_Control directory and load the whole thing.
2. Selected the files I wanted to grab.
3. "Converted" them from mp3 to mp3, in essence copying the ones I wanted off of the iPod and into the Winamp output directory.

HI DERE, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 18:09 (seventeen years ago)

*flashes boobs, leg in hopes of someone pulling over, picking her up, and showing her how to rename her playlists*

Finefinemusic, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 14:24 (seventeen years ago)

I hope it (and you) were smart enough that it didn't reencode!
