The new Air Train to Newark is nice. It's like YesterTomorrowland. Also, much less crowded flights.
Midway is great because it's right on the Orange Line. You get off the plane and right away you get all the crazy Chicago street name stops.
The food courts are terrible at these airports. Which US airport has the best food? Why do I think it is Seattle?

Specifically it's 12:42p to 5:20p, arriving terminal A on American, departing terminal B on Alitalia.
The Denver airport is kinda weird and sprawly put ultimately pretty pleasant to be in. I really like airports though.

Long Beach is still my favorite airport though. Obviously it's my home base, but it hasn't really changed much since the 40s. All the art deco is still there and there's no jetways at all - you still get to walk out on the tarmac and climb a staircase to board. No food court, but a nice cafe and bar. Plus there's free wireless net access everywhere.

I just saw Street Fight - anyone see it?
I'm in Newark once a week - granted I'm only on the main streets. But I don't think it's such a bad city. Some of the architecture is rather nice, and I like the atmosphere of Market and Broad Sts. - all those bizarro clothing boutiques with their giant signs, etc.

The ex-mayor (and current State Senator) Sharpe James, was indicted yesterday by the feds on 25 counts having to do with corruption. My only question is : what took them so long? The guy should rot the rest of his life in the can. The rest of us in this state have been picking up the tab for his shenanigans too long.
Ironbound is great. Try Tony DeCaneca's on Elm Road. Fantastic.
― Bill Magill, Friday, 13 July 2007 14:46 (eighteen years ago)
the two mayors preceding James, Gibson and Addonizio (that goes back to the 60s), were also ethically challenged.
― Dr Morbius, Friday, 13 July 2007 14:50 (eighteen years ago)
This might sound paranoid, but I feel like when someone like James goes down after getting off for so long, there must be some kind of behind-the-scenes shift too -- i.e. James either finally fell out of favor (maybe because he lost the election?) or new powerful interests finally out-muscled old ones.

So I'm in NJ for the first time ever (other than passing thru by train from Philly to NYC), recommendations are welcome. Is Hoboken cool? That's where Maxwell's is, right? I've been periodically checking the calendar for shows I might want to see. I've been down to Princeton (swanky!) to the Pr. Record Exchange and made out pretty good. I'm working in New Brunswick for the next few weeks. It's nice enough, but I'm kind of surprised at the dearth of good record/ book stores, independent theaters etc.. what with this being a college (and a pretty large one at that) town and all. There is a really good Ethiopian restaurant by the hotel though.

I'm working in New Brunswick for the next few weeks. It's nice enough, but I'm kind of surprised at the dearth of good record/ book stores, independent theaters etc..
SRSLY!!!
There is a decent used bookstore (of the classical music playing, cat walking around variety) by the county courthouse (I forget the name of the street).
Please do yourself a favor and eat at Efes at the corner of Easton and Somerset - and order the chicken yogurt or one of the other meat platters, and/or some of the cold salads/dips and don't just get a sandwich. Tijuana Burrito on the same block is also very good.
― Hurting 2, Friday, 13 July 2007 16:37 (eighteen years ago)
The Ethiopian place - Makeda, is fantastic. They have good lunch specials too.
Hoboken isn't exactly "cool" - it's sort of a yuppie paradise. It does have Maxwell's, a so-so record store called Tunes and a so-so used bookstore. There are a few good places to eat - La Isla for cuban, Charritos for mexican, a great espresso/coffee place called Legal Beans (groan-worthy name). Probably not worth the trip unless you're seeing a show at Maxwell's.
I'm in Jersey City next door - also some good places to eat but not a whole lot else to offer. There's a shitty bookstore, a couple of ok vintage stores and a record store that's never open. A fair number of good places to eat though - India st. here is probably second in the area to Jackson Heights, and there's an awesome Taqueria and a pretty good Vietnamese place.
― Hurting 2, Friday, 13 July 2007 16:42 (eighteen years ago)
go back to princeton and have sandwiches at hoagie haven and some pizza from old world pizza. also ice cream from all three ice cream places: thomas sweet (try the blend-in), bent spoon (expensive "artisan" ice cream that is oh-so-worth-it) and halo pub. if youre a coffee guy, hit up small world.
micawber books is a terrific bookstore. and you've already been to the rec ex...
seriously though, you could find a lot less interesting ways to spend a day than wandering around the princeton campus, which is really beautiful esp. at this time of year (and in the fall). the princeton university art museum is pretty great for its size, too.
― max, Friday, 13 July 2007 16:45 (eighteen years ago)
Hurting-you may be right about the behind the scenes shit. There are alot of un-elected "powerbrokers" in this state, who deserve death. No excuses for James, though, who is scum through and through.

I live in Morristown, which is nice-historic with some decent nightlife. The good looking women don't hurt either.
It's summertime in Jersey though..Hoboken and places like it often clear out on the weekends. Head to the Shore if you're inclined towards mindless partying (which I often am).

― Bill Magill, Friday, 13 July 2007 16:48 (eighteen years ago)
yep! I've actually hit up Efes (awesome) and the used bookstore (it's about a block and 1/2 from the office I'm in) several times. And yeah, Makeda has been a god-send.
I'd love to get out more, but my schedule has been sort of monopolizing (like, 12-14 hour days, 7 days a week, ugh). I did get walk around the Princeton campus a bit - very impressive. And I'd love to get to the shore... I'll have to wait until I get a decent block of free time though. thnks for the info!

Egans in Montclair. They brew their own beer, try the lager, very tasty on a hot day. Decent food too. Montclair is also easy to get to via NJTransit.
― Bill Magill, Friday, 13 July 2007 18:35 (eighteen years ago)
Also home to the Montclair Book Center, one of the better book stores in the country. An art museum, decent movie theaters, thai food, indian food, ethiopian food, middle eastern food and a few so-called "NY quality" restaraunts, including one called Table 8 which was really fantastic. There's also a few record stores like Let it Rock and Cafe Soundz, but unfortunately no more Crazy Rhythms or the used place that was around the corner from it.

hey I have to be at the newark airport tomorrow morning and I am a po' boy taking public transit (from queenz) - which google says means going to penn station and then getting off at some newark station and taking a bus to the airport. has anyone done this before? how long will this really take?
― iatee, Thursday, 17 December 2009 04:22 (fifteen years ago)
I have done this before but I think I took the train from penn to Newark instead of the bus - I don't think there was much hassle iirc. never tried the bus from penn station. wouldn't be a bad idea to give yourself a lot of buffer though in case of rush hour traffic etc.
― 囧 (dyao), Thursday, 17 December 2009 04:26 (fifteen years ago)
no I'm taking the train from penn to newark, but then it says bus after that. does the train go to the airport??

What webaite are you reading?? NJ transit goes directly to Newark airport.
― max, Thursday, 17 December 2009 04:30 (fifteen years ago)
Yes, I take this line multiple times a week. You want the NJ Transit Northeast Corridor going to Trenton. You buy a ticket to Newark Int'l Airport, and there's a skybus that takes you from the train station stop to the terminal.
― The conflicts, the craziness, and the sound of credenzas falling (Stevie D), Thursday, 17 December 2009 04:30 (fifteen years ago)
I mean you have to take a monorail to get to the airport proper. But you don't need to take a bus. Go to http://njtransit.com they will help u

pretty sure EWR has its own train stop - don't remember taking a bus once I got there. but maybe there was one of those weird airport buses with no seats? it was about 3-4 years ago, sorry that I'm fuzzy on the details.

doesn't have to be ne corridor line iirc--nj coast line also services airport I believe. At Penn station, on the departures screens, any train that says "ewr" goes to the airport.

Hilarious, then turned fucking sad when I read that the bull likely escaped a slaughterhouse.

this may sound lame, but I love Seabra foods (a portuguese owned but mostly Brazilian foods) – I think there are 2 around Newark? Just go directly to the bakery section!

Burgers, steaks and roast right at the NEC.

"A local animal sanctuary is expected to take in the bull and care for it." All's well that ends well.

Thanks. Will have to do Picnic B Barbecue next time ( which I see is also a fave of Robert Sietsema at Eater)
We ended going to a place my wife’s friend suggested: O Pipo Tavern where we had a Portuguese seafood fest platter for 2 ( that was enough for 3) and a chorizo sausage appetizer where the waiter lit up and flamed the long sausage and then cut it up for us . Good tasty stuff. Crowded restaurant for lunch with mostly Portuguese speakers
