I had a great conversation similar to teeny's a few months back with someone from Argentina. I can't remember exactly what she was downloading. I think it might have been like EBN-OZN or something. Anyway, the download was taking FOREVER and I had meant to shut down the computer much earlier, so I messaged asking the person if there wasn't someone closer to them offering the file. She wrote back and turned out to be really sweet and friendly. Similar to teeny's transcription, we had a nice lengthy chat full of halting attempts to write in each other's language. She recommended some Argentinian artists to check out, which I still need to do..

one month passes...

HELP ME please. I've gotten everything done to install this Nicotine as far as I can tell. I am stuck at the part where I am supposed to open a program called "X11" which doesn't appear to exist on my computer. There was an x11.pkg in developer tools which I clicked on etc but I dunno what to do at this point. I opened terminal to try to put in the commands there and got "unable to open display" error on it.

I was so psyched too as everything went so smoothly with everything else. There is something called "XDarwin" in the place where "X11" would've been according to instructions but I can't figure out how to use it at all.

you have to connect, Ally. Which is under the "file" menu. Also, I think the default server in nicotine is wrong so you have to type something else in there (server.slsk.org:2240 instead of mail.slsk, which is what was in there when I installed it).

No no I was connected and doing searches fine, I couldn't figure out how to actually select a track and download it. Apparently I have to highlight it, option-click it, hold down option-click, scroll down to "Download File(s)" and then it will download files. Which seems really awkward and retarded to me but I got used to it pretty quickly. I know on the PC I was able to just highlight and hit enter, and on Kazaa it is supa eazy. Apparently no one is interested in trading files with Mac users or something, judging by how complicated and stupid this all was but Elvis is right about the character building and the sense of real accomplishment.

What does it mean that some files are grey and some files are black? My username is Allyzay and I think I left it on so y'all can go steal the entire contents of my computer if you want.

After-midnight US is a free-for-all. You find someone with a 100+ transfer speed to you and lots of stuff, then just go to town. I set a bunch of stuff to download one night and woke up with 2GB of MP3s. (I'm staying away from Slsk because I have about 2000 MP3s I haven't even tried to listen to.)

I've given up on getting Slsk to work on my Mac, I'm just going to pirate Virtua*PC and run it that way. If they can get it working this way, how come no one's been able to just do a nice easy Carbon version?

well, no, i wouldn't say that. i'll agree that #it and o!nk are too strict, though. there's a tracker i like strictly devoted to indie pop that's way more flexible. just make and effort. there really is no reason to be under 0.90, though.

Yeah, it kinda is, because the torrent sharing algorithm/ratio system is entirely fucked-up. You can upload a new torrent for a recording that's never been on the network and it may -- depending on rules that I can't say I quite grasp -- be downloaded from you exactly once even though you continue to seed, while other folks seed it and have far higher download counts on that particular recording.

The easiest way to get and keep a high ratio is to seed a bunch of popular crap. That's fine for busy worker bees, but with SLSK, you're judged not just by quantity, but the overall quality of yr shares, which encourages folks to share more esoteric than popular stuff. Which is what I'm after, anyways.

also, to offer the other perspective to counter Rock Hardy's - I get banned a lot because my hard drive is pretty much at death's door, and I keep getting error messages that I have less that 200mb free space so I have to always go back and delete shit.

the record labels have started flooding soulseek with fake-shares recently. make a search for swizz beats's "it's me bitches" and you'll see what i mean. loads of users with similar sounding names (ciara5, digit56, mrgoogle8) share it but when you try downloading from them it says "awaiting user". fyi this only happens with searches on recent rap singles. i guess their trick is for all of their fake-shares to have real fast access-times/ping-times so that they end up in/clog up the search results before the "legit" shares show up. i kid you not.

the ratio thing is lame, particularly on 01nk, since I dl mosly obscure or older stuff, which no-one ever wants to download, apparently. My ratios are crap even though I've been seeding dozens of things for a few weeks.

slsk: I've gotten banned recently for having "not interesting enough shares". uh, ok. the other really irritating thing about slsk: if you have your shares on a drive that you turn off at any point while slsk is running, it deletes your share preference w/out telling you. at some point I got banned repeatedly and didn't know why, and it turns out I had nothing shared. annoying. further, the interface for selecting shared folders is clunky (this is a windows OS limitation though). I don't want to recursively share my entire library, just certain things.

It's not a windows OS limitation, iirc you used to be select individual folders to share. I suspect (on no grounds whatsoever) that it was rewritten to encourage whole library sharing.
