How the hell does anyone do this.I'm just finishing a night shift and I feel like crap. Red bull knots up the insides something awful but I need something to keep me going. Any ideas?

dexedrine

the surface noise (electricsound), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 07:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I just rely on coffee and food. Get out of the house. Having company/someone to talk to helps a lot. When pulling all nighters at school, partners in crime are essential, as they are the only ones who will get eggs with you at 2am.

Ian Johnson (orion), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 07:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't recommend anything that's good for you. Actually, sleep deprivation in general is bad for you.

Sean (Sean), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 07:49 (twenty-one years ago)

waste away the hours hitting "random". read threads of the past. pure excitement!

Emilymv (Emilymv), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 08:40 (twenty-one years ago)

right now im on coors light and cigarettes
we'll see how long i make it though

TEH ONE AN ONLEY DEANN GULBAREY (deangulberry), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 08:49 (twenty-one years ago)

The best bit is when you get to about midday of the next day and things begin to get very strange.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 10:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Like when people look at your eyes and gasp and stuff and you just smile back and they gasp again and you say "hand me the screwdriver, the tele's broken" and then they leave.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 10:40 (twenty-one years ago)

er, get some sleep Nick

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 15:17 (twenty-one years ago)

coffee, chocolate, and lots of sex help keep me up all night.

yetimike (McGonigal), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 15:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll never understand the allure of staying up all night. Sleeping RULES. Oh god, how I love to sleep.

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 15:22 (twenty-one years ago)

but sleeping when you're not supposed to sleep (i.e. daytime) is the ultimate taboo!

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 15:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I am totally on vampire hours, lately. I can't help it. My brain won't shut up until the sun comes out to make it quiet down! It makes very little sense to me, but it's how I work...

yetimike (McGonigal), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 15:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I could think of a few taboos that out-taboo daytime sleeping..... (xpost)

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 15:26 (twenty-one years ago)

NO, there are NONE, that's why it's the ULTIMATE taboo (pls, my entire self-image as a dashing rogue at odds with a world he didn't create hinges entirely on my after-lunch nap)!

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 15:28 (twenty-one years ago)

So all postmen are really dangerous social deviants?

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 15:28 (twenty-one years ago)

zzzzzzzzzzz...huh?..zzzzzzzzzz

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 15:29 (twenty-one years ago)

the fun of unemployment: staying up playing video games until the sun rises or your eyes hurt too much. then, you sleep until 5pm, not get anything done that day, and feel horrible about it. fun!

El Santo Claus (Kingfish), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 15:31 (twenty-one years ago)

If you can eat fizzy cola bottles too then that's like my ultimate holiday dream.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 15:32 (twenty-one years ago)

sleeping does rule but they pay me £10 an hour not to. I have had barely 4 hrs of sleep today and have to stay up till 9 tomorrow morning again.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 15:34 (twenty-one years ago)

eggs are u&k...high protein, low carb, won't slow you down. exercise.

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 15:36 (twenty-one years ago)

when you have something you should be doing, it's easy to find things to keep you awake (that aren't what you should be doing.)

Ian Johnson (orion), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 20:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Ferrero Pocket Coffee.

cis (cis), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 22:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 23:26 (twenty-one years ago)

the past few days i've switched to manic episodes in the late evening and then have not been able to fall asleep till after dawn. major dud.

Viva La Sam (thatgirl), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 23:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Candy!

Aja (aja), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 23:52 (twenty-one years ago)

As a matter of interest, is there any tradition for exploding things in the early hours of Christmas morning? Cos there have been 4 or 5 really loud bangs which are obviously fairly close to me, and they don't sound like fireworks :/

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 25 December 2003 00:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Are you in Baghdad?

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 25 December 2003 00:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh my!

Aja (aja), Thursday, 25 December 2003 00:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Fireworks?

Ed (dali), Thursday, 25 December 2003 00:38 (twenty-one years ago)

This sounds highly unorthodox.

Aja (aja), Thursday, 25 December 2003 00:39 (twenty-one years ago)

must be catholic fireworks, anyway orthodox christmas isn't for a while yet

Ed (dali), Thursday, 25 December 2003 00:40 (twenty-one years ago)

All I mean is it sounds a little weird.

Aja (aja), Thursday, 25 December 2003 00:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I tend not to assume the worstunless the windows rattle. I was lioving in Hackney when the Baltic exchange bomb went off and that shook the windows.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 25 December 2003 00:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Now I can hear sirens.

Aja (aja), Thursday, 25 December 2003 00:56 (twenty-one years ago)

AJA: LASH YOURSELF TO THE MAST!!!!!

Ian Johnson (orion), Thursday, 25 December 2003 02:14 (twenty-one years ago)

What? The sirens stopped.

Aja (aja), Thursday, 25 December 2003 02:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Do they not teach you the classics in school

Ed (dali), Thursday, 25 December 2003 02:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I ment sirens of police cars.

Aja (aja), Thursday, 25 December 2003 02:28 (twenty-one years ago)

no beguiling mermaids on the west coast then

Ed (dali), Thursday, 25 December 2003 02:28 (twenty-one years ago)

None that I can hear

Aja (aja), Thursday, 25 December 2003 02:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Second night of this has turned out to be way easier than the first.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 25 December 2003 04:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Was there a nap during the daytime, Ed? Marathon nights of staying up == harsh.

Ian Johnson (orion), Thursday, 25 December 2003 05:06 (twenty-one years ago)

yes, 4 hours in the morning and another 45mins or so in the afternoon. I should sleep better today, no bin men.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 25 December 2003 05:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Tonight's been very easy, I'm goint to have horrible jetlag resetting my body clock to normality aren't I?

Ed (dali), Friday, 26 December 2003 05:20 (twenty-one years ago)

not really, I think jetlag symptoms have more to do with your body's reaction to sunlight than your sleep rhythms. I mean, it'll be a pain, but it won't be jetlag precisely.

teeny (teeny), Friday, 26 December 2003 13:05 (twenty-one years ago)

also: hi! I'm working the 6 to noon shift if anyone wants to chat!

teeny (teeny), Friday, 26 December 2003 13:05 (twenty-one years ago)

five years pass...

sleep for 2 hours or forget it?...

Surmounter, Friday, 8 May 2009 09:45 (sixteen years ago)

SLEEP!!!!

Even half an hour will refresh yoou.

Chewshabadoo, Friday, 8 May 2009 09:47 (sixteen years ago)

If you're like me, stay awake, because otherwise you'll go to sleep and wake up ten hours later.

snoball, Friday, 8 May 2009 09:49 (sixteen years ago)

yeah 3 hours is brutal, 2 will be even worse

velko, Friday, 8 May 2009 09:53 (sixteen years ago)

Sit on the loo and close eyes.

15 mins later, you will wake up thanks to Gravity, but you will be refreshed.

Any longer than that will make you more tired.

Mark G, Friday, 8 May 2009 09:53 (sixteen years ago)

waste away the hours hitting "random". read threads of the past. pure excitement!
― Emilymv

can't really argue with that

velko, Friday, 8 May 2009 09:55 (sixteen years ago)

sleep for 2 hours or forget it?...

Def sleep. You'll prob be more tired than if you don't but at least you'll have a distinction between "today" and "tomorrow".

N1ck (Upt0eleven), Friday, 8 May 2009 10:02 (sixteen years ago)

yep sleep. sometimes we go fishing early morning and have to be up at 3am, i'll cram in 3 hours of kip before hand and i'll feel fine getting up (until the following evening when i'll be KNACKED)

Ant Attack.. (Ste), Friday, 8 May 2009 10:05 (sixteen years ago)

You'll feel like shit whatever you do. I say you should get some music together and go outside and watch the sun come up.

Enemy Insects (NickB), Friday, 8 May 2009 10:06 (sixteen years ago)

And then ...HUGE BREAKFAST.

Enemy Insects (NickB), Friday, 8 May 2009 10:06 (sixteen years ago)

Sleep, but don't do the whole Going To Bed thing, undressing etc, to avoid the 10hr oversleep. Make it a Nap On Sofa or something instead. (At least that's how it works for me.)

(OH NO only 1 hr 22 mins left of the 2 hrs!)

anatol_merklich, Friday, 8 May 2009 10:21 (sixteen years ago)

dud dud dud

quincie, Friday, 8 May 2009 14:13 (sixteen years ago)

Generally a dud but it depends on what the night is spent doing. Some of the most amazing moments in my life have happened during nights spent up.

a sweet ballet dancer (ENBB), Friday, 8 May 2009 14:18 (sixteen years ago)

I love staying up all night, I love watching the sun come up...and then going home to a shower and a cool bed and sleep during the day.

Staying up all night and then ALL THE NEXT DAY as well is murder, murder, murder.

But not someone who should be dead anyway (Laurel), Friday, 8 May 2009 14:21 (sixteen years ago)

And after the last week of my life, I probably should be dead anyway.

But not someone who should be dead anyway (Laurel), Friday, 8 May 2009 14:24 (sixteen years ago)

xpost - Yes, exactly.

a sweet ballet dancer (ENBB), Friday, 8 May 2009 14:24 (sixteen years ago)

If I could chain-smoke and be horrible, I could survive the next day. But coming to work and concentrating on stuff and being sociable is just beyond. Way, way beyond.

But not someone who should be dead anyway (Laurel), Friday, 8 May 2009 14:34 (sixteen years ago)

i tend to do this every couple of weeks, then do a working day. it's ok as long as you can sleep straight in the door from work.

Old Big 'OOS (AKA the Cupwinner) (darraghmac), Friday, 8 May 2009 14:35 (sixteen years ago)

i can't do that. Just wouldn't be able to work. Can stay awake for 2 or 3 days on a drink and drug binge no bother, but can't do anything approaching productive without at least 3 hours sleep the night before.

languid samuel l. jackson (jim), Friday, 8 May 2009 14:37 (sixteen years ago)

I used to be king of the all-nighters, wouldn't think twice about staying up all night... usually schoolwork or work work or writing or recording or ellis dee...

now that I'm older, it's harder on me, but the weird thing is, it's not the day after, but the day after that, when I totally feel like crap. wow there are a lot of commas in that sentence and none in this one.

鬼の手 (Edward III), Friday, 8 May 2009 14:37 (sixteen years ago)

I'm I'm totally with Laurel on this. It's only ok on days when I can either crash in the morning or just do nothing and be miserable all day.

a sweet ballet dancer (ENBB), Friday, 8 May 2009 14:38 (sixteen years ago)

revised:

20s up all night = Classic
30s up all night = Dud dud dud
40s up all night = no intention of finding out, but likely fatal

quincie, Friday, 8 May 2009 15:03 (sixteen years ago)

can't do anything approaching productive

oh, i never said anything about productive, i'm in the public sector.

Old Big 'OOS (AKA the Cupwinner) (darraghmac), Friday, 8 May 2009 15:08 (sixteen years ago)

I'm in my 30s and the day after is still a form of enjoyably loopy mania

鬼の手 (Edward III), Friday, 8 May 2009 15:08 (sixteen years ago)

I wouldn't be up all night unless booze were involved, so for me it's always sleep dep + hangover + anything else ill advised. Impossible to tell where the various kinds of crappiness overlap, but these days I think the sleep dep is worse than the hangover, so....

But not someone who should be dead anyway (Laurel), Friday, 8 May 2009 15:11 (sixteen years ago)

I'm getting that way too, and the thing is I know what to do to help a hangover, but I really, really suck at taking naps, so I'm not digging this new development. These days if I get six hours of sleep my brain just straight up doesn't work, it's a very new thing to me.

Mansun was where I fucked up (acoleuthic), Friday, 7 May 2010 11:24 (fifteen years ago)

nakhchivan, Friday, 7 May 2010 11:24 (fifteen years ago)

Regular Coke and Coke Zero both have 23mg of caffeine in it. Compared to diet Coke which has 31mg and Coke Black which has 46.

thank fuck

oh look the tories have wonned a seat

Mansun was where I fucked up (acoleuthic), Friday, 7 May 2010 11:26 (fifteen years ago)

guys will you forgive me if i go full luriqua for a small time

Mansun was where I fucked up (acoleuthic), Friday, 7 May 2010 11:28 (fifteen years ago)

while i was on the train home this morning i had a sudden and very lucid realisation and that was that i wanted to be a train driver

Mansun was where I fucked up (acoleuthic), Friday, 7 May 2010 11:59 (fifteen years ago)

it would provide me with a beautiful life and a full vision of britain

Mansun was where I fucked up (acoleuthic), Friday, 7 May 2010 12:00 (fifteen years ago)

you would also be guaranteed death in the event of a crossed connection

Mansun was where I fucked up (acoleuthic), Friday, 7 May 2010 12:03 (fifteen years ago)

then i wondered how train drivers get home at night and i figured they either sleep at the station or they have a car waiting for them at the station which they drive home

then i had another lucid realisation that you probably need to be able to drive a car to drive a train, and that saddened me

what's the point of driving a train when you have to drive a car too tho

so i dunno maybe they drive freight-trains at night and never sleep

never sleep again

Mansun was where I fucked up (acoleuthic), Friday, 7 May 2010 12:03 (fifteen years ago)

whenever i do this these days i end up suicidally depressed the next day

GETTING SOME SLEEP, DREAMING OF PHALLIC ARCHITECTURE

Mansun was where I fucked up (acoleuthic), Friday, 7 May 2010 14:22 (fifteen years ago)

I stay up all night on Sundays and Mondays as a part of my job, and it means that I spend three days out of every seven in a vague state of depression and apathy--it's not just the shifting sleep times, it's also the long hours of doing nothing but reading and playing Sword and Poker II on my Ipod Touch (along with about two hours of actual work). Oh, and I have to drive forty miles back home after that. It would be easier if I got to see concrete penises on my way home. It's an actual possibility--I drive through Sarasota, which has a penis on its official symbol (Michaelanglo's David), but they try to hide it at every possibility.
