SNOW in SEATTLE ((picture thread))

Seattle received 2" of snow today, an incredible amount for our city. I've yet to see a plow anywhere in Belltown, although I did see a fair number of shop owners out with leaf blowers, trying to clear their sidewalks. Some pictures from my walk with puppy:

Also, people out here can't drive in snow. Lots of hilly roads have orange traffic cones blocking them off.

lyra (lyra), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 22:28 (twenty-two years ago)

there are NO plows in this city! which is ridiculous, sort of--this happens every other year or so, you'd think they'd buy one fucking plow, y'know?

but yes it's gorgeous. (and we need to have a Top Pot miniFAP asap!)

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 22:29 (twenty-two years ago)

also, take your pick: people out here can't drive, period/people out here can't function in snow.

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 22:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the dog.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 22:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Portland is, like, completely shut down thanks to three or four inches of snow. Apparently there are no snow plows out here. It's quite amazing, there is a totally small amount of snow but everything is still on the streets.

And now I go home from work!

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 23:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I just walked to Bed Bath & Beyond, it started flurrying again. BB&B was on the verge of closing "because of the snow" --it's less than 2" people!!!

My friend who moved here from Rochester is incredulous that flurries can take out the whole city. He was just standing out on our sidewalk in his slippers going "Geesh! Look at this, noone plowed"

lyra (lyra), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 23:36 (twenty-two years ago)

lyra, check yr email

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 23:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh man, those snow pictures are gorgeous. Absolutely stunning. I love to see pictures of snow. I'd actually prefer to see the real thing around here, but, you know, snowball's chance in hell, that sort of thing.

And your puppy is adorable!

Tenacious Dee (Dee the Lurker), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 23:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Aw, thank you Dee. I would pass along the compliment to puppy, but he already thinks he's the most handsome thing to ever walk the earth, and I don't want to swell his head more. ;)

Seattle online 911 log shows 13 motor vehicle accidents so far today:
http://www2.cityofseattle.net/fire/realTime911/getRecsForDatePub.asp?action=Today&incDate=&rad1=des

Heh, also: SDOT has set traffic signals on flash mode at hills, steeper grades and other key locations to reduce the need for traffic to come to a full stop. When approaching a flashing yellow signal, drivers should slow as they approach the intersection. These drivers are never going to learn how to brake in the snow now!

lyra (lyra), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 00:13 (twenty-two years ago)

It was at least 4" by my apartment. We passed two abandoned articulated buses along the 358 route this evening.

Pork Charles, Wednesday, 7 January 2004 08:10 (twenty-two years ago)

those pics were great -- wish i could have been downtown or on the hill but i was 'stuck' in ballard today -- really rad to see so many people just walking around though.

and yes, people here can't drive in the snow -- that could have something to do with the fact that i think this is the third time i've seen it stick in the 5 years i've been here, and also that yes matos, people simply cannot drive in seattle in the first place...

yetimike (McGonigal), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 08:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I took a whole bunch of pics in the Fremont area earlier today. I'll have to post them tomorrow night.

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 09:07 (twenty-two years ago)

The funniest part was just everyone in Fremont giving up and therefore just throwing snowballs at driving cars. And the people in the cars getting out and throwing snowballs back. But yeah, I'm reeaally glad i worked from home today (as i requested yesterday anticipating this)

these are great. yous are the rules.

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 23:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Well anyway, the above pics were yesterday. Today, the same scene is more slushy, dirty, and far far less charming.

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 23:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 23:46 (twenty-two years ago)

My friend who moved here from Rochester is incredulous that flurries can take out the whole city. He was just standing out on our sidewalk in his slippers going "Geesh! Look at this, noone plowed"

Lyra, your mate would be lost in Buffalo. A mate out there posted pics on his site last Winter just after a snowstorm, where you couldn't see the tops of the mailboxes....or the parked cars.

(BTW, Pretty puppy, too.)

And I still plan to visit Seattle after seeing all those pics! I'm feeling brave.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 23:47 (twenty-two years ago)

well, it only snows once every other year here, so...

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 23:52 (twenty-two years ago)

The east coast and midwest people can laugh, but, see, most of the east coast and the midwest don't mostly live in the hills. That's what causes most of the problems in Seattle snow. You need to go uphill and downhill for almost everything in this town.

Well, still, the east coast and midwest people can still laugh, regardless I guess.

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 23:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Lyra, our puppies should have a play-date! Does he like to play chase?

Snow yesterday was FABULOUS on the east side - much romping outside in the street where we live. Much snowball throwing. Much me falling on my ass.

Layna Andersen (Layna Andersen), Thursday, 8 January 2004 00:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I love them pics.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 8 January 2004 01:45 (twenty-two years ago)

great pics indeed, d.b.!

the snow yesterday was the worst in 8 years -- i was actually surprised that like no one plowed into my truck parked on a fairly major thoroughfare, that the buses mostly ran all day, etc.

yetimike (McGonigal), Thursday, 8 January 2004 02:07 (twenty-two years ago)

WTF was up with the roads today being unplowed? Can't they borrow a plow or two? The ID was the worst, 3" of slush on all the roads. Also, I find it a bit amusing that all the recent weather forecasts have to do 10 minutes of explaining what freezing rain is before proceeding to announce we're getting some tonight.

We had a snowstorm digital photos comparison fest at work. Some people got great ones of cars skidding backwards down the roads around here, and there was one of a toyota smushed into the back of the Real Networks building by a taxi.

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 11 January 2007 20:25 (nineteen years ago)

I'm the only one at work today. Weird 'cuz there isn't much snow at all on Cap Hill (where I live) or in Pioneer Square (where I work).

Beautiful day, though. I'm leaving early.

Adam Beales (Pye Poudre), Thursday, 11 January 2007 20:27 (nineteen years ago)

It was hailing and then fluffily snowing all over Beacon Hill and down Yesler to 23rd last night when we were heading to dinner at Thai Tom. Rain in the U District though.

Jaq (Jaq), Thursday, 11 January 2007 21:13 (nineteen years ago)

I haven't had to use a shovel for an entire calendar year -- I'm in the Midwest -- so wtf?

Andy_K (Andy_K), Thursday, 11 January 2007 21:28 (nineteen years ago)

Sorry it is not flat here. 45 degree angle hill streets = icy sheets of death and destruction. The city buses aren't running down our way today.

Jaq (Jaq), Thursday, 11 January 2007 21:55 (nineteen years ago)

Also, see above, no plows.

My prof, who lives up in Vancouver, WA, said it was a winter wonderland up there, but although it snowed a bit there was no sign of anything sticking around here -- except the occasional snow-covered car driving by, mysteriously out of place.

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 11 January 2007 22:26 (nineteen years ago)

lyra (lyra), Thursday, 11 January 2007 23:39 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, excellent! Declan is just so cute!!! We had a shot of Morrie, watching that snowfall on 1st Ave (we lived across from Caffe Minnie at the time) up on Flickr:

Seattle got effeciently shadowed by the Olympic Mtns. this morning.. which I didn't mind, since the commute wasn't pure hell, just slight hell. (Half of Ballard was on my bus, since their express bus didn't show up.)

I am prepared to walk home to Fremont from downtown after work though, if we do get snow. The buses will be delayed big time because they're only allowed to put chains when they get "the call" i.e. it's too late (I think it's union rules in question, but I could be wrong.)

Gino-Vanellyville (Mackro Mackro), Wednesday, 17 December 2008 20:26 (seventeen years ago)

Gino-Vanellyville (Mackro Mackro), Wednesday, 17 December 2008 20:27 (seventeen years ago)

I hate it when the damn buses get delayed. Even the last few days I've seen delays just due to more people taking the bus, I guess. I don't have the luxury of walking home tonight.

my coworker said something was frozen in her car and made a terrible noise

Hahah. I had to read this a couple of times before I realized you meant something in the inner workings of the car rather than some random item in the back seat that froze and made a terrible noise!

That's the main fire department. Definitely on the way from 5th to the 2nd Ave Ext stop, but 2 blocks north of Jackson. The street in front of it is Washington.

I'm not sure what Spokane got - I'm about an hour south - but we had a couple of inches on the stairs this morning, nothing too bad. It's crazy to see Seattle covered in snow though.

I grew up in Upper Michigan and basically it looks like pretty much every day between November and March there look outside now - white, grey, snowing just because it can, cold but not amazingly so. It's fun a couple times a year but I'm done with it already.

I'm in the Wallingford library. Like downtown and the near north, it's still snowing, but not bitterly cold, accumulating very slowly, up to about 3 or 4 inches where it ain't mashed down by cars n feet. Nice. Went to FUCKING work this FUCKING morning, stood at the bus stop for over an hour before finally catching a 16, but when in finally FUCKING got there, it was closed for the day. Locked up in ways I can't access, so there I was, on the street, in the snow. THANKS FOR THE FUCKING PHONE CALL, GUYS! Umm, nice to have that outta my system. Wish I had pix for y'all, but no goes. haha, Contenderizer, I walked down to be dissed by two filled 17 buses in a row. I briskly walked over to the Fremont Ave/Dexter Ave corner in hopes of 26 and 28 buses. I FINALLY got let onto one of them, and then the driver dissed everyone waiting after me. I was really lucky, considering I was planning to walk all the way to downtown from Fremont.

I'm DJing at Havana tonight if you want to escape the cold.. from 7pm to 9pm. Just Happy Hour Djing.. I will nonetheless be walking there from downtown, lol.

Good shots, Mackro - I like the one with the old Federal building in the background.

I got a reprieve from busing it up to Mountlake Terrace today - they said if they really needed me there, they'd come get me. Mr. Jaq gave up on the SB 23 this morning after none showed up for 45 minutes. He's headed up to 8th and Blanchard now (hopefully on a tunnel bus and the SLUT) to get the car, which supposedly is fixed.

There was a deep quick snow on MLK day in either 2001 or 2002 - we were driving up to Vancouver BC and didn't think we'd be able to make it to the freeway from Madrona - iirc there was 3-4" that fell in about 2 hours. The brunt of it might have missed downtown though and just stuck near the lake. And we did get dumped on once in south Seattle 2 years ago, but that was only 2" or so.

Jaq, Thursday, 18 December 2008 22:40 (seventeen years ago)

OK, so did you guys hear the apparently humongous thundersnow strike this morning?

I slept through it, but apparently I can sleep through loud noise.

But while you unfortunately can't see it, it was caught live on King5 just in audio. It was loud enough such that it apparently felt like an earthquake in Capitol Hill/Central District area.

There hasn't been as much snow at once as there was in 96, but this is the first time in my life where it has repeatedly snowed over a week-long period. Usually it just snows for one or two days and then melts away.

Got stuck waiting an extra half an hour for a bus from Everett to Lynnwood yesterday and then ended up having to hike it a couple miles from Lynwood Transit Center to my apt. : /

lxy, Friday, 19 December 2008 03:02 (seventeen years ago)

lol @ reposting a weather report, but man this doesn't sound like it'll be fun

http://www.komonews.com/weather
That sets up our next challenge -- a big storm heading in Saturday night and into Sunday. Now, I know we've tossed a lot at you this week, and many people have gone through a lot. But sorry to say, this storm also looks like it could have a profound impact on the region with several events -- including the potential of a major windstorm in the Cascade foothills, and a big mess of snow and freezing rain in the lowlands.

This storm is coming in from the west, and it looks pretty wet -- and warm. Second, we'll not only have some arctic air here in Western Washington, but even more in Eastern Washington. That air is very dense, and thus has higher pressure.

As the low pressure of the storm approaches, forecasting models are hinting now that we could see some very strong, gusty east winds in the passes to the usual North Bend, Enumclaw, Gold Bar east-windy places. But now forecasting models paint a much stronger wind -- perhaps sustained east winds as high as 50-60 mph with gusts reaching as high as 70-90 mph. Now, that's an initial estimate, subject to change, but we need to raise the red flag now. A HIGH WIND WATCH is in effect from Saturday morning through Sunday afternoon.

Aside from strong winds, we'll be putting a lot of moisture on top of a very cold air mass. This could bring a period of widespread heavy snow to the entire region Saturday evening and night. We could see 4-8" again as a general rule across all the lowlands, but areas over along the Hood Canal and eastern Olympic Peninsula area could see 6-12" of snow.

jergins, Friday, 19 December 2008 03:06 (seventeen years ago)

!!!! - !!!!!!!!

lxy, Friday, 19 December 2008 03:12 (seventeen years ago)

Usic of My Mind (The Reverend), Friday, 19 December 2008 04:45 (seventeen years ago)

I walked from Capitol Hill to South Lake Union, expecting to walk home to Fremont, but I saw a 28 bus creep around the corner just as I got to Denny & Westlake. This would be normal, except the 28 bus normally runs on Dexter, several blocks north. I got on, and driver looking really tired and exasperated told me "I'm on REROUTE. Let me know where you want off". ME: "Uh, Fremont. just south of the bridge" DRIVER: "You got it"... chug chug chug chug.. DRIVER: "Here. Be careful". ME: "You are awesome!"

It's like Miracle On 34th St. meets The Stand out there.. weirded out, yet sorta happy, drunk people walking literally in the middle of the street while cars are either abandoned and covered in snow and icicles, or the few working cars try to drive, while everyone moves well away from them, only to hear a screech and bump in the distance when the car zips past. The buses look like they're there to pick up the bodies.

From the Seattle times

NEW - 12:37 PM

Storm rolls in; 75 mph winds predicted

Those living in the Seattle area and west of Interstate 5 will get the brunt of the snow with 3-8 inches, while those east of the interstate face treacherous winds.

lol i like the concept that it will only snow in Fremont and South Lake Union, but cross I-5 on Denny Way, and then snow instantly becomes wind.

The way that's phrased, I think it's supposed to imply that the I-5 division carries for those outside of the Seattle area, whereas if you are in the Seattle area, you are getting snowed on, no buts about it.

Well, so far, in Fremont, a consistent light dusting still.

The surprise will be waking up tomorrow morning.

I'm going to guess 2 inches overnight. I doubt it's going to be the 7-8 inches they've been saying all day.

Walking to Fremont tomorrow.

WTF will all the panic buying in Seattle proper?

I can understand that being the case in east King Co, Snoho Co., etc.

but why is the BALLARD Fred Meyer a panic zone? Dudes, just go walk to Cupcake Royale or some shit, you'll survive!

People throwing snowballs around instead of footballs. I can't imagine sitting through a game today, but then I'm not a fan. Still snowing like it's never going to stop down here. Let the cat out this afternoon, so she could "experience snow." Promply ran away and hid under neighbor's porch. Took the better part of two hours, chasing her (gently) from yard to yard to finally corral her (shivering) beneath a small, palm-like shrub, before we finally got her back indoors, where she promptly vanished beneath the bedding. Later on, I walked down to the PCC on Aurora to lay in supplies (beer, brussel sprouts, pasta, canned tomatoes). CRAZY WITH THE SNOW! People out on cross-country skis everywhere. Almost no cars, those that were out getting stuck at every traffic light. Ducks quacking around Greenlalke like it was no big deal. Have never seen this city look so beautiful, and am loving every minute of this.

did anyone else try to go to seattle this weekend and fail miserably? i am on my way home because the earliest they could replace my cancelled flight was xmas day, cutting a 9-day trip in half. i'm wondering if the snow itself was serious or if it would have been manageable for snow-familiar cities and seattle just wasn't prepared to deal with the amount of snow

Robie, Monday, 22 December 2008 12:18 (seventeen years ago)

Lots of snow by just about any measure, but yeah, Midwestern or Northeastern cities would have handled it fine. Seattle just doesn't have the gear to manage heavy weather, and people here get so freaked out that basic services (such as public transportation) fall apart.

Bored American Aerospace Defense Command (BORAD) (contenderizer), Monday, 22 December 2008 15:07 (seventeen years ago)

I heard Seatac ran out of de-icer - snow has never been this prolonged here, and temperatures haven't been this cold in almost 20 years. Xmas day is iffy as well, since we are supposed to get more snow on Wednesday night.

Great pix, contenderizer - sorry your cat freaked out!

Should a city be prepared for something this out of the ordinary? I don't think so.

Jaq, Monday, 22 December 2008 15:12 (seventeen years ago)

I'm thinking about switching my flight from Wednesday (7am-ish) to Thursday...it's supposed to snow Tuesday night but Wednesday night is supposed to rain. I'm sure a bunch of people have the same idea...apparently Alaska's phone hold time is in the 2-3 hr range.

Jaq, Monday, 22 December 2008 17:02 (seventeen years ago)

For those of you outside the Pacific Northwest reading this...

Imagine if Los Angeles had freezing rain on the freeways for two weeks. What do you think would happen?

Imagine if Chicago had 110+ heat with high humidity for a month, with high winds that could force the loss the power

This is a bit of the equivalent of what's been happening in Seattle, Portland, Vancouver, etc. the past two weeks. We have plenty of snowplows but they are mostly dedicated to the areas that regularly get snow, and while us city folks have gotten nearly 6 inches of snow, more or less, which itself is a *20 YEAR EVENT*, the snowplows are busy trying to dig up several feet of snow for people outside Western Washington because those people *WILL DIE* if the snowplows don't save them.

Seattle and Portland people can far more easily walk to a convenience store or cafe and survive... the urbanities allow people here to survive far more easily with problems than people in the rural parts of Washington and Oregon. So the lack of de-icing and plowing is a sacrifice to make sure there isn't a major human catastrophe.

While I agree that we need a little more sanding and plowing support, if you're still wondering "OMG WTF SEATTLE DOESN'T DE-ICE EVERYTHING RIGHT AWAY? YOU GUYS ARE SOOO STOOOPID", then you can fuck off.

"Sustainability Sucks" T's Ahoy For Urban Outfitters Bootches (Mackro Mackro), Monday, 22 December 2008 17:05 (seventeen years ago)

THAT SAID, if you were to suggest that the cities should allow better distribution of tire chains, better education, and allow the city police to TICKET CARS DURING ICE ADVISORIES THAT DON'T USE CHAINS, then I would agree with you, even though I don't expect my neighbors here on ILX to agree with me. Same goes with Metro, Sound Transit, and other public road transit re: ice warnings.

"Sustainability Sucks" T's Ahoy For Urban Outfitters Bootches (Mackro Mackro), Monday, 22 December 2008 17:13 (seventeen years ago)

Having lived in the midwest through 3 major winter weather events, including the blizzard of '78, I can tell you that even a well-prepared city struggles when hit with large and prolonged amounts of snow. Seattle has been fortunate to not have lost power to large areas (as we did 2 years ago due to that horrendous wind storm in December).

Jaq, Monday, 22 December 2008 17:13 (seventeen years ago)

btw I managed to get here yesterday - flight was fine, just had to wait for a gate on the Seatac tarmac for a couple hours. I have relatives who were trying to get to Alaska a couple days ago who still haven't been able to leave town.

fucccccccccccck this snow. how come it never snowed like this when i was a kid? back when i would have enjoyed it?

miss precious perfect (musically), Monday, 22 December 2008 17:20 (seventeen years ago)

When getting directions at WSDOT I asked why, when the snow plow DOES go by, there's still 3"-4" of snow left on the ground - which then melts a little and freezes, making the situation worse than if they hadn't plowed at all.
WSDOT person LAUGHED and said, "yeah, it's sort of a secret" but they were afraid they might hit a manhole cover somewhere. Don't other cities have manhole covers too? What's different about ours?

the higgs, Monday, 22 December 2008 17:27 (seventeen years ago)

I'd expect it has to do with the high camber of a lot of the streets here (necessary for rainwater management). Down in this part of town, the manholes end up elevated over the street surface (due to settling in the jello zone?), and I could see them not want to risk bashing a blade on one of those. The neighborhoods I lived in Indianapolis didn't have manholes, but also didn't get plowed, even in the worst weather. Only the heaviest use surface streets (state highways generally) saw state/city plows and everyone else just had to deal with it (or contract with the pickup truck guys that had blades).

Robie, I'm sorry your flight was canceled and empathize with your frustration, but, really, asking if the snow was "serious" or if a midwestern city could have handled it was silly - this amount of snow was serious for Seattle obviously or any other city where December temperatures rarely dip below freezing.

I spent most of Christmas day helping to push people's cars around. I was kinda pissed at my friend for even trying to drive in the first place, but somehow with the help of a neighbor and his kids, plus some valuable advice from a cop across the street who yelled through his megaphone at us, we actually managed to get out onto Aurora. Then when we got to his house, we helped some more people.

What I learned is if the car isn't moving forwards, try going in reverse a little and then moving forward again. Repeat.

Fremont got horizontal freezing rain which quickly turned to rain. It's supposed to be 40s tomorrow so all of today's stuff will melt if not already.

Spokane is getting another 6-8 inches of snow. It is really a snowpocalypse on Eastern WA

"oh but the Coast'ers always get the wet weather, while it's nice sunny and dry here!". Oops

I got fooled by this the first winter I was here. It was sunny and dry, relatively speaking. Last year was bad, but I was told it was an exception. This year is just killing me.

I grew up in remote-ass upper Michigan where we got over 200 inches a year on average, but I thought I moved away from that. Eastern WA has none of the infrastructure, mindset, or outdoor activities necessary for me to put up with this kind of insanity.

Hi, Seattle! Did everyone have to walk to work again today?

One Community Service Mummy, hold the Straightedge Merman (Laurel), Monday, 5 January 2009 16:18 (seventeen years ago)

Not me. My bus actually arrived on time and wasn't as packed as normal.

Yesterday was a lot of wet, heavy snow i.e. most of it was off the roads in hours.

December was below freezing during most of the snow, so those were the walkin' days.

Joygoat, are you doing ok? I assume you are ok enough to post here, but thought I'd ask

Oh yeah, it's totally fine. Sounding dire and insane about winter weather is kind of par for the course for me. Shoveling the 12" of snow this morning was kind of fun in a crazy "I can't believe I have to do this" way.

It's kind of post-apocalypsey outside right now. You're not supposed to see snowplows stuck on the side of the road. Thank you AWD Subaru, and to think we thought about selling you because we didn't need 4 wheel drive out here.

a better command of the mummy language (joygoat), Monday, 5 January 2009 18:27 (seventeen years ago)

Took a co-worker 2.5 hrs to get home (w Beacon hill) from Redmond. My decision to stay home today (for dubious reason - just a basic hangover) now seems prescient.

Today was hardly smooth, but at least there was some plowing and salting done today. I actually saw a few snowplows and salting vehicles.

Whereas none of that was done the 2 weeks in Xmas '08 for snowpocalopogas.

This is the most evil snowstorm ever because of the winds tho. Holy shit.

Jaq, Wednesday, 23 February 2011 22:28 (fifteen years ago)

It better start snowing in Seattle soon or i'm gonna get pissed.

Rev, though Everett got a bunch of snow last night/this morning. Did it all melt?

brotherlovesdub, Wednesday, 23 February 2011 22:52 (fifteen years ago)

It was snowing during the morning yesterday but then it warmed up and most of it melted, enough so that I biked to the corner store around 4PM on clear roads. Been snowing a bit off and on today, but not really enough to stick.

banjee trillness (The Reverend), Wednesday, 23 February 2011 23:47 (fifteen years ago)

Sounds like it didn't snow yesterday in Seattle though? I just was under the assumption that it had.

banjee trillness (The Reverend), Wednesday, 23 February 2011 23:50 (fifteen years ago)

It did snow in Seattle. I watched the snow fall off and on all day on the corner of 11th and Pine. Snowed quite heavily at times during the afternoon and again from 5-6:30. There was snow on all the cars and roofs this morning but virtually none on the yards/trees.

The pellet-y stuff is called graupel.
I had a really slick walk to work and, again, only 5 of us made it in.

kate78, Thursday, 19 January 2012 16:52 (fourteen years ago)

okay so: it's really graupelling over here! the constant taptaptapping is a little crazy-making.

good job grappling with the graupel, kate78. be safe, everyone!

lxy, Thursday, 19 January 2012 16:58 (fourteen years ago)

lxy, you should come to quiz with us next week!

kate78, Thursday, 19 January 2012 17:31 (fourteen years ago)

yes! jaq mentioned it to us (jergins & me) the other week and we'd love to! remind me of the details, plz?

lxy, Thursday, 19 January 2012 17:48 (fourteen years ago)

Hooray! A plan!

I figured out this morning what my neighbor was doing last night, shoveling the entire street. He was clearing area around the storm drains. Looking out there now, the ice layer is just getting thicker and thicker.

Jaq, Thursday, 19 January 2012 17:50 (fourteen years ago)

aw right!

kate78, Thursday, 19 January 2012 17:51 (fourteen years ago)

STILL steadily graupelling. this is madness.

lxy, Thursday, 19 January 2012 19:37 (fourteen years ago)

still dumping thick snowflakes here. we have a good 7 inches of accumulation at least

The Reverend, Thursday, 19 January 2012 19:38 (fourteen years ago)

Supposedly it's raining and heavily snowing in Redmond - gotta love all these microclimates.

Jaq, Thursday, 19 January 2012 19:49 (fourteen years ago)

after, what? 7 hours of graupel we now have snow. snow on top of ice on top of snow. things are not looking good for a trip to the airport tomorrow.

lxy, Thursday, 19 January 2012 22:11 (fourteen years ago)

It's supposed to start raining at some point tonight and be 10 degrees warmer tomorrow (43 F for the low), so it might be melted enough!

Jaq, Thursday, 19 January 2012 22:15 (fourteen years ago)

ah thank you, that's good. except for the part about going back to work after going to the airport.

lxy, Thursday, 19 January 2012 22:19 (fourteen years ago)

such a crazy apocalyptic day, what with the snow hail sun gale rain stuff, and the massive power outage that shut down campus for the last half of the day. so weird.

just had another squall in gtown, hail this time.

lxy, Wednesday, 14 March 2012 01:58 (thirteen years ago)

a few blocks away, and we only got snow/rain no hail

Jaq, Wednesday, 14 March 2012 02:21 (thirteen years ago)

lxy, Friday, 20 December 2013 14:54 (twelve years ago)

There's snow for real in Mt Baker

The Reverend, Friday, 20 December 2013 18:40 (twelve years ago)

Trying to decide whether I should call in or go to work in West Seattle. I realllly need to replace my tires. They lose traction in the damn rain. I might just end up driving around Beacon Hill instead of over like I usually do.

The Reverend, Friday, 20 December 2013 18:42 (twelve years ago)

I was fine until I got to 85th and 124th, where the left turn lane was a sheet of ice. There was enough slush off to the center to slow me down so I didn't rearend the giant pickup in front of me.

Graupel was coming down in Georgetown around 9:30!

Jaq, Friday, 20 December 2013 19:29 (twelve years ago)

It just started coming down here in the ass-end of the state, supposed to get six inches

anky, Friday, 20 December 2013 19:49 (twelve years ago)

I just learned a new word. Thanks! I've seen graupel, but never knew it had its own name.

Aimless, Friday, 20 December 2013 19:59 (twelve years ago)

Ok yay, I ended up being able to work from a site within walking distance instead.

The Reverend, Friday, 20 December 2013 20:59 (twelve years ago)

Yeah, it was graupelmania around 9:30-10:00. Now, nothing in central Seattle, just wet. Mid- to upper-40s all next week. No white Xmas for sic.

kate78, Friday, 20 December 2013 21:36 (twelve years ago)

no graupel for me today. i ended up going to work at 10:30 out of guilt for being at home when everyone else made it in, and i could hear the snow melting all around me.

nice picture, anky!

Replying to @ScottSKOMO

I was really hoping to avoid another snowstorm this week. My divorce is being finalized on Tuesday and I really don’t want that delayed and we’re going to Ohio Wednesday night for a hockey tournament so I really want to be able to leave.

Canon in Deez (silby), Saturday, 13 February 2021 22:38 (five years ago)

Here in Portland we got hit with snow, sleet and freezing rain in alternating waves. There's a good third of an inch of ice on everything outside my window, but we've kept our electricity so far. Might be more ice coming tonight. I fucking hate ice storms.
