White Castle: Classic or Dud?

Classic. I do not, categorically, believe in guilty pleasures, but this comes real real close. Sliders, gut-bombs . . . gimme some more, please.

Inspired by going to Dick's Burgers in Seattle (the Capitol Hill location--a local institution), going home with four cheeseburgers, and eating them while watching The Skydivers episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000 on DVD on my new iBook G4, and having happy memories of my ex-'s apartment, which was mere blocks away from White Castle, where we would go at 3am and make ourselves feel incredibly guilty. (Jeanne Fury, as my ex-'s former next-door neighbor, do YOU ever go to White Castle?)

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 8 January 2004 19:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I've never had White Castle, living in Canada, but from everything I've heard, I think I would love it very much. Like a second child.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 8 January 2004 19:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Classic late at night with cheese while half-drunk or sleep deprived and utterly dud otherwise.

TOMBOT, Thursday, 8 January 2004 19:47 (twenty-two years ago)

the funny thing is, I remember they sold them for a while at supermarkets, and you could take them home, microwave them and they'd taste *exactly* the same.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 8 January 2004 19:48 (twenty-two years ago)

most vile thing ever. i love it.

jody (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 8 January 2004 19:49 (twenty-two years ago)

do they still have "chicken rings"?

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 8 January 2004 19:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Classsssssic.

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 8 January 2004 19:50 (twenty-two years ago)

there's a white castle near here (over by the jay street-borough hall station) and it's crackhead city. last time i ate there i got asked for spare change by three different people.

jody (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 8 January 2004 19:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow. I don't think I've ever read someone so proud of eating multiple cheeseburgers while sitting at a computer. Kudos.

dean gulberry (deangulberry), Thursday, 8 January 2004 19:51 (twenty-two years ago)

TOMBOT OTM. The line on the drive thru is always longest after midnight.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 8 January 2004 19:56 (twenty-two years ago)

White Castle and Krystal and jumbo slice pizza are all in the same category for me, it's SOOOOOO good when you're all out of it and just need some grease with a crust attached ("little nubbin of goo") but then one day you try and eat it while sober and go "How did I not vomit that night?"

TOMBOT, Thursday, 8 January 2004 19:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I just had some on New Year's Day! I was so colossolly hungover .. it just called out to me. 3 jalapeno cheeseburgers and an order of Chicken rings. I think it still totaled under $3, and god did it taste good.

Broheems (diamond), Thursday, 8 January 2004 19:59 (twenty-two years ago)

There is one 80 yards from where I sit. A lobby open 24 hours a day, every day, damned fine milkshakes based on milk products *gasp*, great crinkle-cut fries, and the best steamed tiny patties in the business.

white castles : colon :: drano : clogged sink

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 8 January 2004 19:59 (twenty-two years ago)

it should go without saying that no sane person goes to White Castle during daylight hours. (well, OK, unless they're parents with kids looking for quick-n-easy lunch)

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 8 January 2004 20:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Matos, I have never been to that White Castle. I went to college in the Bronx and there's a White Castle right outside of the college gates. I swear, every other week some dude was getting stabbed at that White Castle, but my friends would still go at all frickin hours of the night. The guys would gorge on that shit and come back to the dorms REEKING of onions and grease. And I can't even describe the gas that stuff gave them. Oh god... gag.

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Thursday, 8 January 2004 20:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm assuming 'chicken rings' are onion rings with chicken replacing the onion?

dean gulberry (deangulberry), Thursday, 8 January 2004 20:03 (twenty-two years ago)

but there's also a Church's Chicken housed there (in the same bldg/sharing the same fryers damn near!), so truly you have no excuse

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 8 January 2004 20:03 (twenty-two years ago)

The guys were so thoroughly devoted to White Castle that my friend Mike gave his groomsmen personalized WC bowling shirts as a present for being in his wedding. I thought the lot of them were going to weep.

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Thursday, 8 January 2004 20:04 (twenty-two years ago)

truly you have no excuse

Ah, but my bowels do.

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Thursday, 8 January 2004 20:05 (twenty-two years ago)

i can't even eat this shit when drunk, they're so effing awful. (and i'm someone who likes POPEYES -- when SOBER!)

classic b/c they exist, but not for the food.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Thursday, 8 January 2004 20:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually I go to WC pretty often in the light of day, but it's usually in the early morning, for sausage- or bacon-and-egg sammiches and coffee. They have good coffee, you know.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 8 January 2004 20:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Sassy's Sliders

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 8 January 2004 20:06 (twenty-two years ago)

the after effects of Popeye's spicy chicken on colon >>>> the after effects of Whiteys

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 8 January 2004 20:07 (twenty-two years ago)

surely KFC is a million times worse than Popeye's? just the smell of it makes me wanna vomit.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 8 January 2004 20:09 (twenty-two years ago)

we who went to rutgers had this to spend our drunken $$ on ... and it was within walking distance from the campus/off-campus apartments (whereas the closest White Castle's was a ten minute drive to Piscataway).

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Thursday, 8 January 2004 20:10 (twenty-two years ago)

The thing about White Castle is after you bring a sack of it home and finish it, you have to actually go and throw it out in your building's dumpster. There's no way you can just leave it in your trash can or you'll regret it the next day.

Broheems (diamond), Thursday, 8 January 2004 20:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I love that White Castle's initials are "WC."

jody (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 8 January 2004 20:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 8 January 2004 20:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 8 January 2004 21:07 (twenty-two years ago)

i hope that the other NYCers have clicked gabbneb's Sassy Sliders link ... this sounds like a FAP idea, if you catch me drift!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Thursday, 8 January 2004 21:09 (twenty-two years ago)

(the place is about the size of a large elevator)

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 8 January 2004 21:12 (twenty-two years ago)

ha ha I am dumbass I thought WC Fields was the enema guy. shows how much i know!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 8 January 2004 21:12 (twenty-two years ago)

ok, then maybe not.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Thursday, 8 January 2004 21:16 (twenty-two years ago)

For current and former Mpls.-St. Paul residents, the be-all end-all should be a jucy lucy from Matt's, but next down on the list is surely five cheezy sliders from WC.

I don't know whether I find it tres gourmet or tres terrifying that everytime I go there the sliders taste just a little bit different from the last time I go. (And then there's always the odd occasion where they taste truly nauseating.)

Eric H. (Eric H.), Thursday, 8 January 2004 21:18 (twenty-two years ago)

ha ha I am dumbass I thought WC Fields was the enema guy.

well, he was always pretty damn cranky ... and drunk. maybe they gave him whiskey or vodka enemas.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Thursday, 8 January 2004 21:19 (twenty-two years ago)

WC = Weeping Colon.
I like the fish+cheese+extra tartar sauce. Their fries suck.

this is WC Fields:

Eisbär (llamasfur), Thursday, 8 January 2004 21:25 (twenty-two years ago)

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 8 January 2004 21:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Whenever anyone orders a fish sammich at the Whiteys across the street I can smell it.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 8 January 2004 21:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I can smell my local WC from quite a distance. Though, I have to add, I don't frequent it much since it's located right near some great Southern Indian snack shops.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Thursday, 8 January 2004 21:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm getting [a jucy lucy] tonight! (Haw-haw!)

Eric H. (Eric H.), Thursday, 8 January 2004 21:38 (twenty-two years ago)

ugh. i hate to be a spoilsport, but dud. anything i've had from white castle has been truly foul, and not in a so-bad-it's-good kind of way.

I swear, every other week some dude was getting stabbed at that White Castle

a friend of mine got shot in the leg at a w.c. on flushing avenue.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 8 January 2004 23:08 (twenty-two years ago)

White Castle is the worst thing in the ENTIRE UNIVERSE. There are about 4 billion other things you can eat while fucked out of your mind on coke and booze and weed and whatever else you weirdos are doing at 3am that makes you want to eat INSTANT STOMACH DEATH IN A BOX, why would you even vaguely fathom the idea of choosing White Castle over any of them? I'd rather eat at Arby's for fuck's sake.

Allyzay, Friday, 9 January 2004 00:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry I got all Alex with the bolding on that one but I feel really strongly about this and I just keep it to myself usually cos, honestly, it's just not worth it to say this in general because it is not like anyone ever is going to take me to White Castle.

Allyzay, Friday, 9 January 2004 00:31 (twenty-two years ago)

yummy. yummy. yummy.

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 9 January 2004 00:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I like Arby's. But I'm a foreigner.

Have any of the Midwesterners (or anyone else, for that matter) been to Golden Corral? Wow, that was an experience.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 9 January 2004 00:33 (twenty-two years ago)

ally 1,000% OTM ...

BTW, arby's has killer chicken fingers. i'd eat that shit straight or sober.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Friday, 9 January 2004 00:33 (twenty-two years ago)

They make your mouth smell like you fell in a dumpster for three days and rolled around in it and then ran down the street to get extra sweat on you and then licked your own armpit, to boot.

AND PEOPLE WHO ARE IN LARGE CITIES HAVE NO REASON TO GO THERE AT ALL!!

Allyzay, Friday, 9 January 2004 00:33 (twenty-two years ago)

one slider >>>>>> every item on the Taco Time menu.

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 9 January 2004 00:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Why did we not broach the topic of White Castle when I started my American food thread?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 9 January 2004 00:35 (twenty-two years ago)

What in the fuck is Taco Time? It sounds like one of those terrible early '80s video games, before they allowed you to be very violent.

Allyzay, Friday, 9 January 2004 00:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I've been kissed - lots - after eating White Castle. And not by crack ho's, either. Yum.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Friday, 9 January 2004 00:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I've never gone to Golden Corral since I'm not too big on buffets, plus there's a much better Polish buffet in the area. But I've heard good things about them, albeit it from people who also extoll the virtures of Olive Garden.

oops (Oops), Friday, 9 January 2004 00:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, I'm sure, I mean a couple of obviously really demented women have responded "CLASSIC" on this very thread but that's your business, not mine. I'd sooner kiss the Incredible Mr. Limpet.

Allyzay, Friday, 9 January 2004 00:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Man, Golden Corral makes the Olive Garden look like a playa's ball!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 9 January 2004 00:39 (twenty-two years ago)

The Incredible Mr. Limpet, incidentally, has the most ludicrious plot of any film ever save for those ones with the football playin' donkey.

Allyzay, Friday, 9 January 2004 00:39 (twenty-two years ago)

when i get fucked up, and there's a mexican restaurant or taco bell's in the vicinity, nothing hits the spot more than beef tacos. 7-11 used to also have kick-ass doritos with cheez-whiz and beef that was required for drunken/stoned hungry-time.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Friday, 9 January 2004 00:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Fazoli's bread sticks.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 9 January 2004 00:40 (twenty-two years ago)

i was gonna ask if that's the film with don knotts as a dolphin, but then i looked at ally's e-mail address and realized that that was so.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Friday, 9 January 2004 00:40 (twenty-two years ago)

don knotts himself is a pretty vile thought, too.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Friday, 9 January 2004 00:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Taco Time is a west coast institution that ought to be locked up in one. The WORST tacos and burritos I've ever had, bar none.

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 9 January 2004 00:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Ugh. Somehow that's more appetizing than White Castle, but just barely. Have none of you ever heard of:

- Pizza places
- Diners
- All night supermarkets where you can buy ice cream, ho hos and more beer
- chinese food leftovers
- fucking marzipan for christ sake, just anything

???????????????

Allyzay, Friday, 9 January 2004 00:41 (twenty-two years ago)

All that other shit takes too long, when all you want to do is eat & crash. Plus most of it ain't open anyway. There's a 24-hour White Castle about 3 blocks from my house ... so, there ya go.

Plus JALAPENO cheesburgers.

Broheems (diamond), Friday, 9 January 2004 00:44 (twenty-two years ago)

AND are people being ironic when they buy jerky on road trips?

only when it's alien jerky.

jody (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 9 January 2004 00:45 (twenty-two years ago)

-Not all of us live in NYC. Pizza places close by 11, midnight on the weekends if you're lucky.
-Yes, there's a diner but that's 20 minutes away which might as well be 2 hours when you're tired and fucked-up and hungry. Oh and Denny's but that's hardly a step up from White Castle, plus you have to wait longer for your food and tip that lazy meth-smoker of a waiter.
-I didn't get Chinese food today.
-Marzipan?

oops (Oops), Friday, 9 January 2004 00:45 (twenty-two years ago)

No no, let's just make it about anything in the world, I mean I kind of prefer that type of free form anyway. I used to date a guy who ate beef jerky like nongoddamnstop and I don't see what that was for either YET STILL PREFERABLE TO ANYONE EVER EATING WHITE CASTLE.

xpost electric mojo jojo where do you live again? I forgetttttt. People like Matos or any of the New Yorkers on this thread have no excuse for ever going to a White Castle because that's not even remotely true but I can see where it would be?

in defense of oops ... when i visited my folks in the jersey suburbs not that long ago, i went to what HAD been a 24/7 supermarket at about 1 am expecting to grab some food. only it closes at 12 AM now. still -- i had a choice of nearby diners, wawa's, 7-11s, and dunkin donuts. all of which preferable to white castle!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Friday, 9 January 2004 00:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I'm in Chicago .. and sure I actually live within walking distance of Chinatown .. and I do sometimes go there. But the White Castle is closer and sometimes a fella's just too fucked-up to deal with a sit-down restaurant..

Broheems (diamond), Friday, 9 January 2004 00:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I have never eaten at White Castle, but Hstencil and I were on Flushing and I kind of got an urge to eat at the one there, although I was massively full of enchiladas.

Didn't Wayne and Garth like White Castle? It can't be that bad.

Carey (Carey), Friday, 9 January 2004 00:57 (twenty-two years ago)

@d@m, have you been to In N Out yet?

Yup, though not the one in the city (where is it? Is there one in the E.bay?). I went to a random one somewhere near Santa Barbara. The guy who took me there told me the special code/password thing so that they do the thing with the burger, can't remember what.

Somewhat unrelated - I love Meijer!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 9 January 2004 00:58 (twenty-two years ago)

oops (Oops), Friday, 9 January 2004 00:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Spencer's second picture is great -- that's the best thing, the simplicity. Just the pickles and those little slivered onions. No cockfarming ketchup.

Broheems (diamond), Friday, 9 January 2004 00:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Hello everybody! that first pic is White Castle burgers floating in cereal. Wake up and comment! thx.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 9 January 2004 00:59 (twenty-two years ago)

oops and mojo: do you guys in chicago have 24/7 korean/chinese delis with all-you-can-eat buffets? i mean, they're ubiquitous in NYC and Philadelphia -- not always the best (and CERTAINLY not at peak freshness in the wee hours of the night), but better than WC AND they're self-serve!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Friday, 9 January 2004 01:00 (twenty-two years ago)

The thing about Meijer is that they sell everything known to man and it's so goddamn huge that you can never find anything there. Esp little shit. I walked around for half an hour once looking for those chip clip thingees.

I did Spencer. yr wlcm.

How many bites is a White Castle burger?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 9 January 2004 01:05 (twenty-two years ago)

i didn't comment at first b/c sliders in cereal is so nasty that the very thought left me speechless.

i think it's a subtle nod to the fact that anyone who eats white castle burgers is fucked up in some way ... either drunk, stoned, homeless (and can't afford better), or just crazy. so they had a fucked-up person come up with an idea -- why not put the slider in cereal?

Eisbär (llamasfur), Friday, 9 January 2004 01:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Three for me. One for my dad.

Eisbär, I hope that I'm crazy. I don't drink or do drugs, so if I'm not crazy, that means I soon shall be homeless.

Seriously, a more effective anti-marijuana ad would be to do away with all those stupid ads about parents and kids and your brain on drugs and just show a bunch of filthy ass hippies doing bong hits and then eating this. NO ONE WOULD EVER DO DRUGS AGAIN.

Allyzay, Friday, 9 January 2004 01:14 (twenty-two years ago)

My god, even if I didn't like WC that recipe page would force me to rate them as classic. I also heard on a radio talk show this Thanksgiving someone claiming that using frozen sliders instead of bread makes excellent stuffing in your turkey.

Arby's Market Fresh Sandwiches = "we're getting our ass kicked with this whole fast-food-roast-beef thing, maybe we should try to grab some of Subway's steez."

Broheems (diamond), Friday, 9 January 2004 01:17 (twenty-two years ago)

spencer, there's a sushi restaurant in encino (i think?) that has (had?) a "cheeseburger roll" that used ankimo (monkfish liver) to a very convincing effect. i was dared to try it and my dining companion and i agreed it was cheesburger-y.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 9 January 2004 01:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Too bad Market Fresh sandwiches accentuate all the shitty things about Arby's whilst taking away any of the illicit pleasures.

THICKBURGERS??

Allyzay, Friday, 9 January 2004 01:36 (twenty-two years ago)

i mean, whatever the quality of hardee's food generally ... and the new thickburger in particular ... they deserve some sort of notice for claiming that their new thickburgers are low-carb because they wrap it in lettuce and not in a bun. like, wtf?!? does this thing look low-carb or healthy to you?

http://www.hardees.com/images/upload/up_2PJWl.jpg

Eisbär (llamasfur), Friday, 9 January 2004 01:39 (twenty-two years ago)

if you can sell americans thickburgers, is it any surprise that dubya's in the oval office?

Eisbär (llamasfur), Friday, 9 January 2004 01:40 (twenty-two years ago)

That restaurant is called Carl's Jr. here. The 'thickburger' is called "The Six Dollar Burger" here.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 9 January 2004 01:42 (twenty-two years ago)

and they let you wrap it in lettuce, too?

Eisbär (llamasfur), Friday, 9 January 2004 01:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Carl's (CKE) acquired Hardee's in the late 90s and converted them to Carl's Jr. menus, decor etc, while keeping the Hardee's name.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 9 January 2004 01:45 (twenty-two years ago)

(CKE)?? Are you really Charles Schwab? WTF?

Anyway while the thickburger lettuce bunned thing is definitely not healthy it is definitely low-carb as what in that would be high carbs without the bread?

Allyzay, Friday, 9 January 2004 01:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Did they just start with their new identity last summer. I remember that the staff was noticibly not used to cooking thicker burger patties. There was like a 15 minute wait between ordering and getting. And they tasted terrible (this coming from a guy who loves WC).

Eric H. (Eric H.), Friday, 9 January 2004 01:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 9 January 2004 01:52 (twenty-two years ago)

also, the six dollar burger tends to be dry and kinda gross. However, they have good grilled chicken breasts.

you know, i just scrolled up in this thread and noticed again how someone said that white castle makes some kind of FISH SANDWICH ... and that some people (INCLUDING ONE ILXOR) actually EATS it. i just can't wrap my mind around that concept, really. i mean, why not just stick yer hand in a dirty toilet and put whatever you grab in yer mouth? it's probably healthier.

The only things I know about White Castle arrrrrrrrrre...

* The one scene in Saturday Night Fever where Travolta and his crew are eating and being ridiculous and all

* Bob Fingerman's brilliant reference to the place in the first issue of Minimum Wage. Characters/cartoonists Rob and Jack need something to eat, it's late at night, off to White Castle!

Rob: "How much time could cooking these things take? The patties are like two millimeters thick, and maybe an inch and a half square. But we keep coming back. WHY?"

Jack: "For that unique taste sensation that is White Castle."

Apres many burgers:

Rob: "Woof. To quote Matt, that was a 'truly cancerous repast.' Oh mommy, I'm gonna regret this come morning."

Jack: "Only if you live through the night, my friend."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 9 January 2004 02:23 (twenty-two years ago)

wtf everybody is so fucked up on this page with the burgers and stoner shit that nobody noticed how appalling it was dealing with the idea of WC Fields getting a White Castle enema even. I hate you all I'm so happy with the idea of beer right now unfortunately my house has none at the moment because I am trying to cut back obviously once again this was a bad idea maybe I should just quit ILX instead.

Funny website (fast food related)

Broheems (diamond), Friday, 9 January 2004 04:12 (twenty-two years ago)

They make your mouth smell like you fell in a dumpster for three days and rolled around in it and then ran down the street to get extra sweat on you and then licked your own armpit, to boot.

Very much so. And they make the entire ROOM you're in smell like that to boot. I know this very well because I used to share an office with a woman who enjoyed large quantities of sliders for breakfast sometimes. I had to share the office with her for the rest of the day too.

I'm in the Chicago suburbs, and I've never heard of a 24/7 Korean deli around here, but we do have 24 hour supermarkets. I used to always do my shopping at 2 AM to avoid lines and such.

(Also, oops--yay for Omega!)

the reason anyone would eat White Castles is simple: they are the hands-down trashiest footstuff(s) ever devised, and that trashiness is part of the appeal. it's like asking why someone would listen to Britney or the Bay City Rollers.

ModJ (ModJ), Friday, 9 January 2004 05:08 (twenty-two years ago)

i agree that White Castle is about as no-class a foodstuff as you can get (short of worms or mud). if we're comparing burger joints to musicians, though, a more apt comparison to White Castle would be to GG Allin or Skrewdriver.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Friday, 9 January 2004 05:22 (twenty-two years ago)

White Castle Power!

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 9 January 2004 05:32 (twenty-two years ago)

actually, you know what? they are. but only if you can somehow imagine G.G. Allin and Skrewdriver actually making good music.

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 9 January 2004 05:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I can imagine them thinking they made good music. Does White Castle think it makes a good burger?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 9 January 2004 05:37 (twenty-two years ago)

no! I have it: Goa trance. White Castles are the Goa trance of fast food.

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 9 January 2004 05:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm in San Antonio.

We have supermarkets that are open 24 hrs. Really good ones. The H-E-Bs. They have nice selections of merchandise. If I were to feel desirous of foodage at 3 a.m., I could pop into an H-E-B, figure out what I wanted to buy, and take it home to eat.

We also have a chain of restaurants locally called Jim's. It's like Denny's but with better food and service. It too is open 24 hrs and if I had a craving for pancakes at 4 a.m. I'd go over there. Hey, wait. I'm psyching myself up for pancakes right now. And coffee. Mmm, pancakes and coffee.

I think some Whataburgers here locally are 24 hr establishments... ? If so, hurrah! They produce my favorite fast food chain burger. Though it is by no means my favorite burger, period -- that one goes to a local restaurant with burgers so good they could convince someone usually unenthused with red meat to drool over the thought of a burger.

Has anyone ever had the honey biscuts at Church's Chicken?

That's the only thing I like from Church's Chicken!

Tenacious Dee (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 9 January 2004 05:41 (twenty-two years ago)

White Castles are the Goa trance of fast food.

Goa trance makes you think you are dancing on the Indian Ocean sands, White Castle makes you think you are stormin' da castle. Except not.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 9 January 2004 05:44 (twenty-two years ago)

but I know it's stupid and like it anyway. so *for me* it's the rough equiv.

Woo!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 9 January 2004 05:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Eating at White Castle sounds like one of those ironic "so bad it's good" experiences, too. Surely GOA trance isn't the best match here.

Eisbär Logic 101:

white castle burgers = eating shit
gg allin = actually ate his own shit
ergo: white castle = gg allin

(though MM works on the premise that white castle burgers = good but trashy, of course.)

Eisbär (llamasfur), Friday, 9 January 2004 07:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Tad, there are no 24-hour delis of ANY sort in Chicago, much less Korean ones. BUT there are cheap-as-shit taquerias that stay open way late on pretty much every block, so nobody here has any excuse for going to White Castle. I mean, I can't count the number of times I've eaten burritos at 2 AM while drunk. THAT'S the Chicago way.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 9 January 2004 07:40 (twenty-two years ago)

By the way, I think I've only eaten at White Castle once, lifetime. Even when I used to eat meat, the idea was disgusting to me. (And there's even one a block away from my apartment!)

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 9 January 2004 07:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Jaymc, I didn't even grow up in Illinois and I've lived in this city for longer than you, so don't fuckin' preach about "THE chicago way". I've very consciously chosen not to live in a disgustingly gentrified, indie-boy neighborhood like Wicker Park. I've lived in Chicago for close to 14 years now and I've never lived north of Roosevelt. So you don't speak for everyone, big guy. There are no fuckin' "taquerias" within a couple miles of my place. Just projects and Chinatown and god bless 'em, White Castle.

ANyway, Tad - no Korean delis, no; there are a couple of pretty goddamn great 24 hour Korean restaurants. But they are way the fuck out of the way, and again there is the whole sit-down problem. And, as I said, plenty of sit-down Chinese places in Chinatown are open until at least 4 AM.

Broheems (diamond), Friday, 9 January 2004 08:06 (twenty-two years ago)

it is easier to taste food when you're drunk.

the sit-down thing might really be a problem if you have to take off your shoes and sit on the floor. for people with long legs, it often looks awkward. (imagine Champion from Belleville Rendezvous doing this!)

youn, Friday, 9 January 2004 08:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh Jesus, Broheems I realize that there aren't taquerias "on every block" in Chicago. I also wouldn't deign to say that I "speak for everyone" in Chicago. I do know that consuming burritos at 2 AM is a popular activity for me and many people I know -- and I think it's somewhat interesting, since my experience is the late-night burrito isn't as common in other cities, like NYC. To me, "the [no caps] Chicago way" wasn't meant to imply "everyone in Chicago does this"; it was meant as a correlative to Korean delis or pizza places in NYC and Philly. Simply put, what kind of food are young drunk Chicagoans most likely to consume? Are you telling me it isn't burritos? (And no, I don't live in Wicker Park. I live in Andersonville -- go on, tell me how gentrified it is.)

But whatever, dude. This is the second time on ILX you've been condescending to me; I shouldn't even be wasting this much space responding.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 9 January 2004 08:25 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah jeez a bit touchy are we?

oops (Oops), Friday, 9 January 2004 08:28 (twenty-two years ago)

"big guy"!

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 9 January 2004 08:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry jaymc, wasn't meant to be a personal slight towards you; I guess I got a little defensive about this going to White Castle thing, beginning with Allyzay and Tad ribbing about it. Anyway, point being -- it's supposed to be like, this funny thing that happens when you're totally annihilated. When there are in fact no other realistic options. I mean, the thread began about, 'let's talk about how completely vile and guilty a pleasure white castle is'. Not fucking one-upsmanship about dietary habits, for chrissakes. Like I say, there is a White Castle three blocks away from me, but I'd estimate I've actually gone there four or five times in the last year. When I've been, yes, that drunk.

Broheems (diamond), Friday, 9 January 2004 08:44 (twenty-two years ago)

And that's perfectly all right! I mean, I certainly don't mean to imply seriously that you or anyone else shouldn't eat at White Castle; I was being a little hyperbolic for the sake of the jokeyness of the thread.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 9 January 2004 08:49 (twenty-two years ago)

No, you're right man... I get you. I just felt like somehow I hadn't made it clear that I really have no other options around here, especially as I do not drive (and wouldn't be anyway at that point in the night).

Broheems (diamond), Friday, 9 January 2004 09:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, I loved White Castle. They opened one across from Knollwood Mall when I was about 12 and my mom was incredibly fond of gutbombs as a nostalgia thing, so five cheesy sliders still kind of spells YUM for me. Also I guess this store was not overrun with botulism or crackheads, because when I was 12 or so crack had not been invented yet.

good fast food:
Wendy's
Taco Bell
McDonalds filet-o-fish/fries
KFC extra crispy and a bucket of mashed potatoes with the weird gravy

horrific fast food:
Arby's yuk yuk yuk
Hardee's
Burger King
the rest of McDonalds
the rest of KFC

Allyzay, Friday, 9 January 2004 15:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Clearly you all didn't catch the 20-20 special on the dirtiest fast food chains. mouse tirds in your burger king.

"mmm i'll take extra value meal number 2, the tird burger."

Chris V (Chris V), Friday, 9 January 2004 15:14 (twenty-two years ago)

with a side order of short and curlies.

Chris V (Chris V), Friday, 9 January 2004 15:15 (twenty-two years ago)

The three best places to get fast food bar none are:

1. White Castle
2. Arby's
3. Taco Bell

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 9 January 2004 15:15 (twenty-two years ago)

there was nothing better than a 1am taco bell run in college. they used to have those 10 tacos for $3.00 deals. mmm taco's and a belly full of meisterbrau

Chris V (Chris V), Friday, 9 January 2004 15:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I remember Wendy's scoring surpringly low a couple years back on one of the muckraking 20/20 segments (surprisingly = surprisingly comparitively).

Eric H. (Eric H.), Friday, 9 January 2004 15:17 (twenty-two years ago)

MEISTERBRAU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 9 January 2004 15:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Dan just proved his Minnesota upbringing I fear.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 9 January 2004 15:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I like to call it Masterbrau

Chris V (Chris V), Friday, 9 January 2004 15:17 (twenty-two years ago)

When you are a poor college student, you have to love a beer that costs $10 a case.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 9 January 2004 15:19 (twenty-two years ago)

We also discovered a beer called Drummond Bros. which was aprox $4.00 a case.

Heres the link to dirty food. And it was a Dateline special.

Chris V (Chris V), Friday, 9 January 2004 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

This is the thread where Dan admits to having no tastebuds.

Allyzay, Friday, 9 January 2004 15:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Tastebuds didn't matter in college. We didn't drink it for taste we drank it to get drunk. And laid.

Chris V (Chris V), Friday, 9 January 2004 15:23 (twenty-two years ago)

At a Hardee’s in Florida, a customer was handed a cup of soda with blood dripping from it. There was blood on her change as well.

I am now imagining a movie titled The Amityville Hardee's.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 9 January 2004 15:24 (twenty-two years ago)

My tastebuds are fine. God, I hate this thread because it's 10:30 in the morning and now I crave White Castle.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 9 January 2004 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I crave Meisterbrau

Chris V (Chris V), Friday, 9 January 2004 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

ARBY'S HAS PLASTIC MEAT. You can stitch two slices of their 'roast beef' together and use it as a baggie for a real sandwich. Also my dad once thought it would be a good idea to buy a Jamocha shake for me from there and it was so gross even my junior-high eat-anything self rejected it via the magic of the projectile in-car vomfest.

I thought my White Castle was hyperclean because it was staffed by anal midwesterners. There is nothing more anal than one of those tight-arsed chain restaurant managers who amuse their college-bound charges with interesting tales of career development with the organization. I never could tell if this came before or after you could see the VPL and the awful moustache had been grown to set off the feed cap poised at jaunty angle. Do these people just happen to Minnesota or do they feature in your provincial centre of choice?

suzy (suzy), Friday, 9 January 2004 15:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Plastic has never tasted so good, though. And their SAUCES!!!!!!

I'm more worried about the White Castle/Arby's/Taco Bell horsemen of the apocolypse than the beer. I understand the beer thing.

Allyzay, Friday, 9 January 2004 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think I've eaten at Arby's since I was around 10. So 20 years. It doesn't look like roast beast on the sandwiches it looks like a steak-um. mmm steak-ums...

Chris V (Chris V), Friday, 9 January 2004 15:38 (twenty-two years ago)

...also when your local Arby's is between White Castle and Wendy's and Taco Bell IT'S GONNA LOSE because of the others being more attractive to stoners and moms who go up to the window with $10 and their order, 'surprise me'.

Really miss having Wendy's in London.

suzy (suzy), Friday, 9 January 2004 15:38 (twenty-two years ago)

All of a sudden a slew of hip-hop songs have a whole new meaning.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 10 January 2004 16:00 (twenty-two years ago)

WC used to have television ads in New York that all centered on the theme of "steam." The one I remember is just a long shot of swirling steam, with audio cues of people going "mmmm" "ooooh" "unh" "yesss!" and gradually you pull back to see an office break room and the groans of pleasure have been issuing from satisfied co-workers chomping down on their White Castle lunch. The steam is swirling because it's been "released" from their takeaway bags. This ad was supposed to highlight the pleasures of WC's "steam" method of cooking. Not flame-broiled (a la Burger King). Not wet-grilled (a la Wendy's). Steamed. Now I may be mistaken but one thing I think you should not do with a burger is steam it.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 10 January 2004 16:08 (twenty-two years ago)

My econo-beer was Black Label.

http://beer.trash.net/img/beers/730.gif

My dad's was Kroger's Cost-Cutter brand, called "BeeR". I don't think they still make that anymore.

Krystal's is just as nasty as WC.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 10 January 2004 16:11 (twenty-two years ago)

NYC is tragically Arbyless. The best thing about WC is that there is always a big line at the drive-thru at 3 in the morning.

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Saturday, 10 January 2004 17:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Steaming a burger only works if it's smothered with artificial onion flavor, WHICH IS THE SECRET OF WHITE CASTLE'S SUCCESS.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Saturday, 10 January 2004 20:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a distinct memory of an NYC Arby's, long gone.

Btw, you people do understand that ground beef = mad cow, right? Unless you can trust the claim that it's organic. Or you can trust the claim that the beef is ground solely from muscle cuts (chuck, sirloin), on a machine that is not used to grind non-muscle cut beef (and you believe in the first place that muscle cuts are safe, which doesn't seem 100% certain wrt commercial operations)?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Saturday, 10 January 2004 20:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha yes, ground beef = mad cow.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Saturday, 10 January 2004 21:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Now I may be mistaken but one thing I think you should not do with a burger is steam it.

Skinner: I hope you're ready for mouth watering hamburgers!
Chalmers: I thought we were having steamed clams?
Skinner: Oh no, I said steamed hams. That's what I call hamburgers.
Chalmers: You call hamburgers "steamed hams"?
Skinner: Yes. It's a regional dialogue.
Chalmers: Uh.. what region?
Skinner: Uuuh. Upstate New York.
Chalmers: Really? Well I'm from Utica and I've never heard anyone use the phrase "steamed hams".
Skinner: Oh not in Utica, no, it's an Albany expression.
Chalmers: Uh I see. You know these hamburgers are quite similar to the ones they have at Krusty Burgers.
Skinner: Hohohoho. No. Patented Skinner Burgers. Old family recipie.
Chalmers: For.. steamed hams.
Skinner: Yes
Chalmers: Yes, and you call them steamed hams despite the fact they are obviously grilled.

jody (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 10 January 2004 21:40 (twenty-two years ago)

When I am in Chicago and have been drinking, there is absolutely no place I would rather go than Lawrence's Fisheries. In fact, they have the best fried shrimp I have ever had, better than New Orleans. God, I could punish a pound of Lawrence's right now.

Come to think of it, after my last gig in New Orleans, it was 3 in the morning and we were waiting for half of our band to bring back the shrimp and I ended up eating my first WC burger. It was both disgusting and yet oddly appropriate at the time.

Jordan (Jordan), Sunday, 11 January 2004 03:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Incidentally are there no southerners here? KRYSTAL?

About fucking time. I actually witnessed how they make Krystals. They rub the top bun IN GREASE so that it is essentially PASTED onto the bottom part, so if you try to pull apart the Krystal to see what is inside IT DISINTEGRATES, thus obscuring the secret of the Krystal.

I never understood why people would pay $0.45 for a Krystal when for $0.99 you could get a Junior Bacon Cheeseburger from Wendy's. Mmmmm. Or, a Cheesy Bean and Rice burrito from TACO BELL. Oh my yes.

Someone once explained to me that White Castle burgers were also called "red dots" for a reason that I will leave someone else to impart.

ModJ (ModJ), Sunday, 11 January 2004 15:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow - Lawrence's Fisheries!! Jordan, you rock. How could I have forgotten them. They are actually near my hood, and given the fact that they're open all night, I really have no excuse for not going there more often than I do. In fact, the last couple times I went there, it was because I got on the wrong bus by mistake after some heavy drinking in the South Loop. Well, ok, I didn't actually get on the wrong bus; i just forgot that the stupid bus (62 Archer) actually re-routes for a couple hours at like 2 am in order to accommodate the UPS workers. So I found myself walking home from 18th and Halsted TWICE now, thanks to my own idiocy. But, thankfully, Lawrence's Fisheries was there both times, waiting for me, the perfect early morning pitstop on a drunken walk home.

They really do have pretty decent stuff. The funniest thing though is the way it all abuts the south branch of Chicago river, in the middle of a mainly undeveloped area. Like, the seafood is actually fresh or something! Fresh from the CHicago river! If you use your imagination it's fun (well, fun for a midwestern city dweller) to think you're at some wharf or something. It's very serene there actually. Especially at 4 in the morning.

Broheems (diamond), Monday, 12 January 2004 03:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Hehe, yeah, absolutely. I think I'm going to be in Chicago next month and I'm looking forward to Lawrence's more than anything.

At Christmas time I went to Lake Street for Mexican food with a friend and there was a 10 Sliders $5 deal at the Lake Street WC (There are about three WCs on Lake Street). We were very tempted to stop and pick them up and shared this with my mom when we returned and saw she'd been having 'a Lifetime day'. She was extremely upset with me for teasing her with the possibility of SLIDERS.

white castle is fast food simplified to its core nature of toxic waste. i guarantee they scoop this stuff out of industrial barrels of glowing ooze, and it just happens to cook up as something we recognize as "food". good idea to eat this stuff if "what you crave" is similar to radiation poisoning.

ozmodiar, Friday, 30 May 2014 03:25 (twelve years ago)

for some reason, i though White Castle was on the West Coast. maybe freezing them actually makes them edible.

anyway, there are so many better ways to find good sliders these days that cruising for White Castle makes even less sense in 2014 than it did in 1994.

People in AZ are losing their goddamn minds over 1st location in state opening. Hearing about it for months now, and there's 2 articles on front page of azcentral.com about the "mania". I can only assume it's cause ppl here have never actually eaten White Castle.

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Thursday, 24 October 2019 17:03 (six years ago)

Amazing! White Castle is so OLD SCHOOL here in the Midwest. And the White Castles are often in old buildings. I do know that so many people from up here end up moving down there, much to our annoyance, so surely some people down there have eaten it.

Rilke Still Sucks, IMO (I M Losted), Thursday, 24 October 2019 20:44 (six years ago)

Pauline Male (Eric H.), Thursday, 24 October 2019 20:50 (six years ago)

Yep I assume the hype here is coming from Midwest & East Coast transplants, so my "never actually eaten" comment was tongue in cheek. Guess I just find ott love for places like WC and Taco Bell that serve shitty gross food bizarre. Yes it's "good when you're drunk" but what isn't???

Pauline Male (Eric H.), Thursday, 24 October 2019 21:35 (six years ago)

I eat White Castle maybe twice a year. There's one in my town so we drive past it all the time and every six months or so... "Hey, you wanna get White Castle for lunch?" "Yeah, OK."

Six cheeseburgers is my limit - that's how many I can eat before my stomach starts cramping. And yeah, the gas produced is toxic and house-filling.

shared unit of analysis (unperson), Thursday, 24 October 2019 21:56 (six years ago)

Greta Van Show Feets BB (milo z), Thursday, 24 October 2019 21:58 (six years ago)
