Do you feel sorry for FAT people?

I've been watching AVERAGE JOE: HAWAII, and they started out with 6 very obese dudes as part of the mix. Now, there's only one of them left among the other Average Joe's. Problem is, at the reality TV site that I normally post, I can't any longer, because the regular posters are having a Black Tie Pity Party for this tub of lard that's left: Sean. If you say ONE word against him and HIS personal issues that he brings up about being "the only F.A.T. guy left", then you're attacked for being prejudice.

WTF!? If you were in a bar, trolling for a date or one night stand, would you take a fatty home with you? Or, if your best friend said, "I have this great friend, you must meet him!", and once you saw a 300 pound rhino waddling your way, with 3 chins, would your first thought be: "That guy is HOT!!!"?

It pisses me off to no end, that people 'try' to be so P.C. regarding extreme obesity (75 pounds and over your ideal weight) on these show forums, yet, if they met the person in real life and were supposed to date them, kiss them and boink them, THEN the truth would come out.

Some of the responces on the site, when I mentioned that the Sean has a complex and uses his weight as an excuse (which he admited on the show, in his OWN words), brought down the Wrath of God towards me and others that said Sean needed to lose the weight and the attitude. Lots of these posters were fat themselves, as they admitted, and blamed it on "gland problems" so I guess they were defending Sean AND their own lack of initiative.

Oh. No. It. Isn't! It's called stuffing your face with bad food and refusing to exercise! When I start to see movie and TV stars at the award shows, sporting 100-200 pounds of extra weight, only then will I believe that "Fat is Beautiful". When I start to see ordinary people on Oprah say, "I gained 150 pounds and I've NEVER felt better!", then I'll believe it.

So, when you see a grotesquely fat person, do you feel like giving them a hug for their 'trama' or the cold shoulder? Would you date them? Fuck them? Be proud of them? I can't and won't. So, I'm shallow; like half of the rest of the world. When I'm rolling around on the bed, I don't feel like I have to worry about turning out like a tortilla if my lover rolls over onto me.

Psychokitty, Tuesday, 27 January 2004 15:59 (twenty-two years ago)

i doubt i'd date them, i doubt i'd go up to them and start going on about their weight either. plenty people i dont find attractive, i dont have to go on about their 'uglyness' though. its like, i've never given that much though to it.

also, people are overweight for a variety of reasons

theres such a thing as being a mean spirited piece of shit also

the river fleet, Tuesday, 27 January 2004 16:07 (twenty-two years ago)

there's nothing wrong with being tactful and empathetic about the matter - it's not necessarily hypocrisy. people who routinely make jokes about and insult overweight people tend to be using it to distract from some insecurities of their own. also please never say 'boink' again (haven't you seen Road Trip)?

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 16:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Anna (Anna), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 16:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not saying to be mean to people, face to face. But, we ALL carry prejudices inside of ourselves about what we find attractive and what we don't.

Some people like tall. Some people like petite. Some thin. Some fat. That's all cool.

But, you can't change your height or race. If you allow yourself to get obese, but then chronically complain to everyone within listening distance that the reasons why you didn't get: the job/the girl/ the guy, are because "I'm too fat", then I have NO sympathy.

I have a couple of overweight friends (over 100 pounds and counting) and their M.O. is watching Pay Per View Wrestling and eating Pork Rinds. They have high blood pressure, joint problems, sleep disorders...and every one of them is under 35 years of age. One friend, a female, is 'sick' from work at least one day per week, because of health issues. Sometimes, she says, "I don't want to do anything but sit inside with a pint of Hagen Daz and watch soaps." Yeah, that's cool...ON YOUR DAY OFF!!!!!!!!!! But, when your weight starts to control your life and your attitude towards life, why should others have to offer comfort to you and feel sad?

C-Man (C-Man), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 22:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I do think the 'it's a glandular' thing is mostly b.s. Sure you may never be slim, but if you eat right and exercise there's no way you could be obese. Show me a really fat person who eats only salads, fruits and veggies and works out regularly and I'll eat my hat.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 22:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Not everyone can be an NTFS person; BE KIND.

Uh, the vast majority of skinny people don't do that. Models, yes, regular people no.

aleksandr supertramp (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 22:35 (twenty-two years ago)

if you work off more calories than you take in then you don't gain weight. I'm sorry but fat people eat more than they should.

run it off (run it off), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 22:36 (twenty-two years ago)

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 22:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm sorry but fat people eat more than they should.

A lot of skinny people do too, but they look good, so it doesn't matter.

Not taking responsibility for one's own life, giving up and blaming others, is one of if not the biggest problem area of modern society.

Stuart (Stuart), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 22:54 (twenty-two years ago)

not b/c they're fat per se, but b/c some people insist on making fun of them b/c of it.

(yes, myself included.)

Eisbär (llamasfur), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 22:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Prejudice ain't pretty Psychokitty, even when it's wrapped in the disguise of advice on how to live better. Considering a few posts I've read from you, I'd think you'd have more sympathy. Some people don't exercise and let it get out of control, no doubt, but some people just have it in them genetically.

Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 22:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Not taking responsibility for one's own life, giving up and blaming others, is one of if not the biggest problem area of modern society.

so, have you written to the Palm County, FL DA to insure that Rush Limbaugh gets charged and indicted?

Eisbär (llamasfur), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 22:56 (twenty-two years ago)

that sounds a bit harsh, Stuart.

What about those people who have had few opportunities to take responsibility for their lives, have been given up on and become resigned to reality, don't they have a case for blaming others or blaming the social conditions that have stolen so much from them?

run it off (run it off), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 22:57 (twenty-two years ago)

some people just have it in them genetically.

Again, this is bullshit to some extent.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 22:57 (twenty-two years ago)

"bullshit to some extent"?! either it is or it isn't

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 22:58 (twenty-two years ago)

in stuart's world, fatties are only people on welfare who eat bad food. except when it's a right-wing radio demagogue, then it's OK.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 22:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I eat way more than I should, and drink beer etc, don't really excercise and I have a mild pot belly, which I'd lose if there was some good clubbing, it is just lucky and hardly a case of everyone at a starting line and taking it from there. Typical oops I guess.

Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 23:00 (twenty-two years ago)

"to some extent" because genetics may prevent you from ever becoming slim and make it harder for you, but it only makes maybe one in a a few million truly obese.

5'6 190 is not obese.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 23:01 (twenty-two years ago)

morality has nothing to do with it

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 23:02 (twenty-two years ago)

So, really, it's bollox. If you're fat and happy that way I think it's cool, but I've not met anyone where that is the case. Same goes for the guys - I know of a fella who's fat and he's a sexist cunt, always degrading pretty women ("aye she's fucking a bit small chested etc") and, at the end of the day, this sort of thing makes him a cunt because a) he's fat and b) he's pissed at being fat and thus puts down really attractive girls to make himself feel better.

Dammit, why was I making not-really-serious complaints about fat people driving up cost of stupid evil for-profit health care when I think health care should be universal? Oh yeah. To irritate fat people for fun because I am evil. But they do not deserve to be called burdens on society. Just a few of them are burdens on me. When they sit on me. But most of them are really cool. And like it was already proven on the "can fat people rock" thread I started a long time ago

Can FAT people rock?

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 17:01 (twenty-two years ago)

BTW, I have admitted as much, Ricardo, but I at this point I think certain people have their minds made up about me and interpret my posts in a way that puts me in the most negative light possible. Also, isn't it funny how you come out of the woodwork simply to take potshots at another poster?

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 17:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I wholeheartedly disagree with the blithely insensitive way you were arguing your point. Also, I shake my head at the way you've removed the side-effects eating disorders can have on your body from your oh-so-pat analysis of the human body (I have anecdotal evidence here that I am not free to divulge but I can paraphrase by saying that overcoming anorexia can put your body into a state where it generates more fat than it actually needs to, making it really fucking difficult to lose weight).

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 17:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm surprised no one's said "this thread proves fat people aren't jolly," but then again perhaps I shouldn't wonder aloud about it...

hstencil, Wednesday, 28 January 2004 17:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Well I apologize for not wrapping my thoughts in a pretty pink bow.
Eating disorders and their effects are a special case and I'm willing to bet are a factor in less than 1% of obese people's weight problems. Of course there's going to be a few exceptions, but the vast majority of obesity can be prevented and/or eliminated.

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 17:17 (twenty-two years ago)

fatphobia? What the hell? How about thinphobia. Because I'm sure I've heard people say far far worse things about people who are slightly underweight here ("ewww", "gross" and "scary" come to mind) and no one has yelled at them. double standard much?

I don't hate people for being fat. What difference does it make to me? (sucka: gluttons are not anymore significant a burden on society than any other non-farmers) But I do have a problem with some information that is commonly passed around as "fact". In the first place, your genes will NOT make you fat. Sorry, people, it doesn't work that way. Your genes may make it more likely that you will become obese. They may make your body absorb more nutrients from a certain amount of food than someone else. They may even make you feel hungry when you're not. But it is consuming more calories than you expend that makes you overweight. In MOST cases, diet and excercise can make you a healthy weight. In the second place, the idea that one has only to "accept" one's body seems to have reached epidemic proportions. Fat is more than an aesthetic issue. Realizing that beauty standards are relative is great and good. But if you are overweight, that is not okay. It is not healthy.

mouse, Wednesday, 28 January 2004 17:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Because I'm sure I've heard people say far far worse things about people who are slightly underweight here ("ewww", "gross" and "scary" come to mind) and no one has yelled at them.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Proof positive that no one reads my posts!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 17:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm fat, and I sure don't need anybody to feel sorry for me. And, yeah, I *would* date, and kiss, and "boink" a fat guy. I married one. Best thing I ever did in my life. I'm hella proud of him. :-)

I really do have a gland problem, my thyroid is fucked. I'm taking replacement hormone, but YOU try losing 60 lbs. It is NOT as easy as you think, and I'm not about to have my whole life revolve around it.

Funny thing is, I was wildly underweight as a kid/teen, to the point where I was mocked constantly. The universe has a sick sense of humor.

Layna Andersen (Layna Andersen), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 17:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry Dan, that was an x-post. But yes, anorexia isn't healthy either. Though what I was specifically refering to was the way in which people here and elsewhere will make comments about how such-and-such famous person doesn't fit their aesthetic standards, because of their weight. To my mind anyway, this seems a far greater case of arbitrary discrimination than pointing out that someone's lifestyle choices are unhealthy. And yet no one ever screams discrimination at those comments.

mouse, Wednesday, 28 January 2004 17:29 (twenty-two years ago)

There's a thread about Xtina's "Dirrty" video where I make similar points, mouse. Also, Ally and I have said similar things on other threads.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 17:33 (twenty-two years ago)

why is this world so OBSESSED with other people's lifestyle choices?

jody (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 17:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Getting fat and/ or losing any of my teeth are the two things that concern me. And going bald or looking any older than I do (i.e. still being ID'd going into clubs make me happy).

C-Man (C-Man), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't want someone I love and care about to be fat to the point where it worsens their quality of life.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 18:28 (twenty-two years ago)

How about people you don't love or care about?

jody (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 18:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Well then, it's PLUMP UP, FATTY MCFATS!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 18:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't feel it's within my rights to make a big deal about those I don't love or care about, though ideal(istical)ly I want anyone whose life is worsened by their excess weight to lose it and be happier and healthier. Isn't that a no-brainer? Not sure why you're asking.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 18:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Perhaps Dan and Calz should go on the shark together - they'll not be going for the same birds, after all.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 18:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't feel it's within my rights to make a big deal about those I don't love or care about

ding ding ding! that is the correct answer. i'm asking because that "lifestyle choices" comment i made above wasn't meant to be flip -- there's just this really unsettling phenomenon of people who have far too much investment in the "well being" of people they wouldn't otherwise give a shit about (like, they don't donate to charities or feed the homeless soup at christmas). it bothers me.

jody (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 18:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Stringent Stepper (Stringent), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 21:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I look a little weird now - I quit chemicals during the holidays and I've gained 9 pounds in the last two weeks by eating like a fucking maniac, at one point eating McCain's freezer cake with my bare hands. If you eat fast enough it dulls your sinus sensitivity and kills your appetite for cocaine. It's weird how my belly is all swollen but there is still a shell of chiseled abs that now look plastic like someone glued them on. My face looks a little meatier but this makes Mother happy so cool beans - I'm underweight anyway. I've never eaten like this in my life but it's quite fun. I do notice I'm sleeping longer and have to take a long shower just to gain morning alertness, though.

People who talk self-deprecatingly/pityingly about being underweight are lying (I used to do it too). You idiots, the internet has brought about a whole new "younger, flatter, bonier, tighter" ideal so do up some pigtails and there will ALWAYS be endless people that want to fuck you over overweighters. And please don't get pumped up/superior because you're skinny, because it's not like it takes much effort. "Oh, I have peanuts for personality, can't write for shit, have feeble little indie friends that can't fight, but at least I can make fun of fat people." I know I'll never get truly fat unless I start mainlining butter or something, so why get pissed at others who have a harder time of it?

I only feel sorry for highly overweight people on the dancefloor, because it's harder for them to bust moves with longevity. But that's it.

Le Coq, Thursday, 29 January 2004 07:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I used to do the "Aww, I'm just skin and bones" act for this purpose, probably like everyone else that does it: "I'm self-effacing and angsty about my appearance, which makes me a good guy on message board terms, but I'm also tacitly broadcasting that I don't suffer from the far less fashionable fat angst." It's like complaining how you're too pale this month while secretly knowing tons of guys on message boards fetishize that sort of thing.

Controversy over 'fatties' sparks apology

Can one blog post spark a national debate? It happened yesterday, when Marie Claire writer Maura Kelly published a story titled “Should "Fatties" Get a Room?”

http://www.shine.yahoo.com/channel/health/controversy-over-fatties-sparks-apology-2404430/

sparks "apology"

like reindeer bitch we blitzen (Whiney G. Weingarten), Thursday, 28 October 2010 14:43 (fifteen years ago)

the thing that really drives me nuts about this is that it's like a hair away from hate speech and will still ultimately will play out as a huge victory for marie claire. the editor will keep her job, the writer will keep her job, the mag will get tons of free attention, and the entire staff will benefit from a SHIT TON of traffic which they can then use to get mega-$$$ in advertising.

like reindeer bitch we blitzen (Whiney G. Weingarten), Thursday, 28 October 2010 14:46 (fifteen years ago)

Writers say inflammatory things to get attention? No wonder I've been doing it wrong.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 28 October 2010 15:09 (fifteen years ago)

Okay, I don't think allowing a (former?) anorexic to write an article about overweight people is a good idea regardless of how you look at it.

lol tea partiers and their fat fingers (HI DERE), Thursday, 28 October 2010 15:14 (fifteen years ago)

good lord, that blog post is mean. her "apology" is too contrived and convenient.

also, what ned said. i know it's cool and edgy to write inflammatory things, but -- taken together -- that type of discourse has a real impact. it's the same type of nonsense that has commentators shouting slogans at each other on television, instead of discussing substance. it's the same type of nonsense that legitimizes the type of teasing and goading that leads some people to depression and even desparation.

sadly, i think whiney's right about the positive impact of all this on the magazine, and even the writer.

Str8 Drapin It (chrisv2010), Thursday, 28 October 2010 15:38 (fifteen years ago)

dude (del), Thursday, 28 October 2010 15:46 (fifteen years ago)

i mean, it is a magazine blog.

So, I can tell you from experience that no one looks at these AT ALL. And already overworked editors are expected to pump these out during the day all the time--in addition to their own work. So, yeah, this happens.

dude (del), Thursday, 28 October 2010 15:59 (fifteen years ago)

To be brutally honest, even in real life, I find it aesthetically displeasing to watch a very, very fat person simply walk across a room — just like I'd find it distressing if I saw a very drunk person stumbling across a bar or a heroine addict slumping in a chair.

those drunks and junkies -- so aesthetically displeasing

also that tv show does sound awful though. not because of the fat people making out, though.
