Tell me : should I buy an ipod?

I realise there may have been much discourse on this subject already and that the ILX massive may choose to roll their eyes and turn wearily away from my question. (Pls remember that I have been missing in action for almost a year - yes, I have posted once in a while but I haven't been *paying attention*. See the Rapture thread yesterday! But I'm back now!)

Anyway stuff that's on my mind -

1) I'm a PC user, not MAC. Does this matter? What tune-shuffling package do you need? Does it come with the iPod?

2)Is there any truth in this battery-life story? I read that they die after 18 months and you have to pay loads to get a replacement.

3)What's the biggest one you can get? 40MB? How many tracks is that roughly? How many does a 20MB hold?

4) Where can I get the best price?

5) Most importantly - are they *any good*? Are people with iPods generally happy with them? What little pitfalls and problems have you found.

Thanks people!

Dr. C (Dr. C), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 14:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Fucking cunting fucking iPod fucking TNT fucking T.

Southall Nick (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 14:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I've still not recieved mine. No, having a PC doens't matter. You need iTunes wihich is downloadable for free from the Apple site. 40gig is the biggest. 20gig will hold about 3000 4-5 minute tunes at 160kbit

Southall Nick (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 14:23 (twenty-two years ago)

The thing about batteries goes for all NiMh batteries, which all slowly lose power over their lifetime.

Southall Nick (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

They're beautiful, sound good, and are easy to use. Now where's mine you fucking cunts?

Southall Nick (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Get an MP3 Discman instead.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 14:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I love my iPod with a burning passion. Biggest one available is 40 MB as far as I know. My wife's had her iPod for quite a great deal longer than 18 months; just keep the thing charged, is the thing. I don't know what hoops PC users have to jump through to use an iPod, but I can't imagine they wouldn't be worth it. iPod totally RULES, especially if you got an organize-my-music-in-various-ways fetish. Which I got.

Nick I've had your iPod for weeks now, I keep waiting for you to drop by and pick it up

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 14:28 (twenty-two years ago)

DrC- no. buy good records instead ;)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 14:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Can you get iPod's insured these days? I really want one, but am loathe to part with that much cash if its only going to get stolen/lost/drunkenly left on the back seat of the N47.

Dr C - the general consensus among most people I know is YES BUY ONE!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 14:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Julio it just gives you an excuse to buy more good records! If you borrowed my iPod for a brisk walk and listened to Ayler's Goin' Home on it you'd be fully converted, I'd wager - it's like walking around on the moon

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 14:32 (twenty-two years ago)

my first iPod died two weeks ago after 20 months (harddrive failure) and on sunday i was a stone cold sucker and bought another (10% off sale). so far i've spent $700 on iPod's and i can't say i regret it (plus i'm poor!).

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 14:33 (twenty-two years ago)

if you buy one try and get a decent case for it - cos they seem to be made of the most scratchable material known to men. My flatmate has one and he seems to love it. If the price ever goes down i might get one too.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 14:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Please can we stop talking about the fucking things.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 14:35 (twenty-two years ago)

matt, my ipod is covered with other gadgets in my home contents insurance, and it includes getting stolen or lost (or left on the tube)

colette (a2lette), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 14:35 (twenty-two years ago)

1. no probs with PCs as long as you have either a firewire port on your PC (you can get a card for £20 if not), or get a USB-firewire cable (from apple shop, also about £20 i think). itunes is the software, i assume it comes with new ones or is easily downloadable.

2. i hope not...

3. 40 GIGABYTES, not MB! 40GB approx 10,000 songs, 20GB approx 5,000 (depending on whether we are talking ramones or yes).

4. mine was got off ebay where i think you can get a decent price from ppl upgrading to swanky new ones, but usual ebay rules apply (mine came all the way from muswell hill which helped!)

5. yes, they're great, although if you currently measure your journey to work by the length of an album as i did, it takes a bit of getting used to having it on random (and you *will* end up with it on random most of the time, listening to whole albums is now a thing of the past to me...)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 14:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I listen to MORE whole albums on the iPod than I did before, that's one of my favorite things about it!

Nick how long have you been waiting?

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

The thing about batteries goes for all NiMh batteries, which all slowly lose power over their lifetime.

True, and it goes for all rechargeables - they all last a few hundred recharge cycles, some suffer from memory effect, some don't. But the NiMH cell in my MD player, for instance, pops out on demand and costs less than a tenner to replace. The issue with the iPod battery, as I understood it, was that it was integral to the unit and Apple didn't offer spares. Now they do - how much does it cost, out of interest? Can you fit it yourself?

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, three weeks, but this is only because TNT Express Worldwide lost it within 5 miles of where it was being delivered to. I spent Friday making some secretary cry and making the depot manager accept liability for it. So I'm now waiting on a replacement.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 14:40 (twenty-two years ago)

What all the happy people above said. I found that I listen to my iPod strictly as a timekiller when going on extended trips or the like, but as that it functions superbly. (I was never a go-around-with-a-Walkman-in-general person.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 14:41 (twenty-two years ago)

It got from Taiwan to Broadclyst fine but couldn't the make it to the fucking university. I hope some cunt's nicked it and can't sell the damn thing on because it's got 'Auspicious Fish' engraved in the back.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 14:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Battery life is undoubtedly the weakest thing about iPods. I'm not so worried about the deterioration over time (you *can* get third party replacement kits for not that much money). More the day to day life. I only often get only 5 hours out of mine as I listen to it on shuffle a lot. Not good enough for a train trip down to London, even.

The supplied earphones don't bring out the best in them either.

I've detailed other moans on the main iPod thread. But overall - great, yeah, esp. for taking on holiday or round to friends and plugging into speakers.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 14:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I just got one (despite my tinnitus....silly, silly me) and it's great fun.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 14:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I find it interesting that having one changes some people's listening habits so that their listening is track based rather than album based.

I sometimes put mine on random if I can't think of anything I really want to listen to but most of the time it's just been brilliant at helping me listen to all the albums I buy/get from the library. In the past I wouldn't have got the chance to listen to albums properly in the way I can now.

It's the best thing ever though, I would recommend it whole heartedly. I run it on a PC with no problems using iTunes which is also great.

mms (mms), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 14:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Keep it coming folks! I'm getting persuaded! What about prices (new)? Where's the best bet for a good deal?

Dr. C (Dr. C), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think you really get them discounted and I think you might have problems getting US vendors to ship to the UK.

John Lewis do free 2 year guarantees on all electrical goods I think, so they're a good bet.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 14:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Get your mate who works in the depot to nick one in transit. See what I did there?!

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 14:52 (twenty-two years ago)

MP3 Discman = removable drive i.e. disc, price £99 or less, capacity = 700MG etc

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 14:52 (twenty-two years ago)

matt, my ipod is covered with other gadgets in my home contents insurance, and it includes getting stolen

e.g. "unwittingly" "stolen" by fellow ilx0rs? :D

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Discmans are fat and do not fit in my pocket.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 14:58 (twenty-two years ago)

There's always ('always' = soon and expensively) Hi-MD.

What about these new things that Dell has put out? Sexy, small, similar interface to ipod, $269 for 20G. Also comes with voice recorder standard. It is 2 oz heavier than the ipod though, but very slightly thinner.

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 15:23 (twenty-two years ago)

20 GB, obv.

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 15:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Fucking ugly though, innit.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

you're just mad because you have a mail-order bride and she hasn't arrived yet.

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 15:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah but when she comes it's gonna be great. < /smut>

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Teeny I kiss you :)

This is the only possible form of portable audio equipment

Enrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 15:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha. I wish I had cause for an iPod, but I just don't know when I would use it. I don't really go running (although it might inspire me to work out more), and I don't do public transit. On half the road trips I go on, I'm driving. Everyone I know who has one is very happy with it though.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 15:41 (twenty-two years ago)

i am tempted to buy an ipod now although that battery life thing does worry me. it'd be great to be able to swap batteries and then long trains/flights can be accompanied by MOOSIC (when not watching crappy films on flights).

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 15:48 (twenty-two years ago)

That Dell thing looks OK. The interface (right down to the font) looks suspiciously similar to the iPod though - I thought it was Hewlett-Packard that Apple did a licensing deal with?

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 15:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I also see the the Dell has a scrollwheel like my aging Nokia phone. I find them great to use - probably better than the iPod touch sensitive wheel, which kind of annoys me (though it's great the way it accelerates when you are whizzing through thousands of tracks).

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Anyone know if there are car stereos with USB ports to either plug in an iPod or upload trax from same? I need to get a new stereo at some point, and I'd rather go the MP3 route rather than CDs, or both if possible.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 16:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I've not heard of them, but instead you can always just use one of those cassette tape adaptors of if you've no cassette deck in your car then you can get FM antennae that plug into your iPod and then tune your radio to the relevant frequency. They're illegal in the UK, though.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 16:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Hooray! Apple have just emailed me to confirm my replacement!

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 16:08 (twenty-two years ago)

They're replacing you?

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 16:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes. With a banana.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 16:11 (twenty-two years ago)

They really do think different.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 16:14 (twenty-two years ago)

oh yeah, don't wear the headphones supplied as i'm sure they scream MUG ME to youths, although grillions of people seem not to have realised this (in central london anyway).

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 16:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Nick, I've tried a wireless adaptor thing that transmits the iPod tunes to the deck on my previous stereo, with varying results. The adaptor itself uses batteries, and you often get radio-type interference during playback.

Ideally what I'd like is a stereo that can connect directly to the iPod and either allow realtime playback or downloadability of the iPod tunes to the stereo's hard drive...surely this must exist? I need to research this, yes.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 16:20 (twenty-two years ago)

that dell looks quite nice i think. i have an archos, its slightly clunky, but sturdy, i prefer it to the ipod, which reminds me of the silver paper from a kitkat

Stringent Stepper (Stringent), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 16:25 (twenty-two years ago)

the cassette tape adaptor is what you need, it just plugs into the headphone jack. They're often used with Discmans.

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 16:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Huzzah! My USB.2 cable has just arrived. It's almost as if I might actually get my iPod at some stage in the future.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

i take my 40GB with me everywhere i go.
IT'S GOT NO MOVING PARTS!!!!

Felonious Drunk (Felcher), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 17:01 (twenty-two years ago)

But they do kinda buzz when they're playing.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

i take my 40GB with me everywhere i go.
IT'S GOT NO MOVING PARTS!!!!

i thought it does have moving parts?? how does the hard drive inside work otherwise?

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 17:24 (twenty-two years ago)

well, no moving parts on the outside. i was just referring to the awesomeness of the touch sensitive buttons. actually, even the hold switch moves.

Felonious Drunk (Felcher), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)

And the annoying thing is that unlike with non-touch-sensitive buttons, you have to use that bloody hold switch quite a lot.

Dr C - another thing. The Windows iTunes reportedly uses a lot of memory, so if your PC is quite old then it might not handle it very well.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 17:59 (twenty-two years ago)

"ipod, have my babies."

cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 18:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Dr. C, I'm a PC guy, and I've had no major issues with using the iPod with my WinXP machine. The two things to keep in mind..

* Get at least a TWO YEAR WARRANTY. Some batteries are better than others. But you never know. But get the goddamn warranty at the store you bought it at.. cuz you never know what might happen to it, and it's densely valuable. And if the rumors about the 18-month battery life are true, this warranty, probably another $50 or so, will make it worth it. And don't lose your warranty. Keep it in your computer accessories drawer or something.

* When you delete your playlists off the iPod, MAKE SURE YOU DELETE THE SONGS FROM THE PLAYLIST FIRST. Deleting just the playlist will NOT delete the songs from the iPod. Instead they will be dangling songs lurking hidden in your iPod taking up space without any real easy direct way to get at them.. (there are ways to get at them, but only through the "Artists", "Songs" menus which aren't turned on by default and might require you to *gasp* consult the user guide handbook to figure out how to use). I learned this the hard way. This is my biggest complaint about the song-upload/playlist-revision design of the iPod.

Otherwise, I use this thing every goddamn day. It's saved my sanity. As someone who works at MS, I have to say MS looks reeaaaaly stupid in comparison for their eventual plans to "compete" with this, and I'm not the only who works here with that opinion. Most of my office mates are jealous that I have one. (I have the 40 gig one)

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 18:03 (twenty-two years ago)

(Note: as for note #2 above.. the only easy way to delete those lurking dangling songs is to click on your root "Pod" item in the iTunes window when your iPod is docked on your PC, and go through EVERY song in the huge list and just try to guess which songs are dangling and which one's aren't. If you guess wrong, you'll accidentally delete songs from the real playlists on your iPod.. which isn't the end of the world, but it's a pain in the ass, all around. So again, just a helpful tip to save you annoyance later)

(Oh, and i HIGHLY recommend getting a Firewire card for your PC if you haven't already done so... you don't technically need one, but it will make iPod life 10 times easier for you, and Firewire cards are cheap.. like $30 or so)

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 18:07 (twenty-two years ago)

You get used to the hold switch.

My earphones, of all things, have gone all kerscrewy, with one earbud playing much quieter than the other.

Anyway, my iPod is how I usually listen to music at home as well, so... yeah. It is my stereo and my music library and it fits in my pocket. And it's a portable harddrive. And I guess I could always use it to play Breakout if I wanted to. It's pretty sweet.

(xpost - the Artists and Songs menus are turned on by default, they're under "Browse")

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 18:08 (twenty-two years ago)

baked bean teeth, best in car ipod option is the Ice-link, also Alpine have been trailing iPod integration.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 18:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Also you seem to use playlists much more vigorously than I do. I like smart playlists. Because they're so smart and all.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 18:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I wish I had cause for an iPod, but I just don't know when I would use it. I don't really go running (although it might inspire me to work out more), and I don't do public transit.

Do you ever.. walk?

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 18:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah - I don't really see the thing donut bitch is talking about as a problem. I often get at songs through the browse artists or songs menu. I guess I need to set up more playlists, but often it's plugged into a friends stereo and they make requests or I want to play them something in particular.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 18:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Here's my crappy iPod experience:

My PC is about 2 or 3 years old - no firewire, Windows 98.

My wife offered to buy me an iPod for my birthday so I upgraded to Windows XP (numerous transitional problems, some of them still not completely solved - my soundcard was incompatible, my home computer network is still not functioning as it should). I also bought and installed a firewire card. Combined cost about £100 plus several hours spent. I'm not exactly expert technically and was pretty pleased with myself for managing the upgrade and installation.

My wife then spent £399 on 40GB iPod. I connected up the iPod, loaded the software etc. Problem - my computer did not recognise the iPod, although it was charging the battery.

I tried uninstalling, reinstalling several times. No joy. I went through all the troubleshooting stages at Apple's website. According to my computer's device manager my firewire card was properly installed and working. All this took several hours. I spoke to Apple support and after working through various potential solutions they concluded that the iPod must be faulty.

All this of course took several more hours.

My wife took the iPod back to the shop. They tested it on their own computer. After farting about with it for some time they got it to work. They suggested the problems was with my PC, suggesting two possibilities:

- my firewire card was not working properly (although my Device Manager said it was and it was charging the battery). Solution, take it back, try to get it changed and install a new one. A bit of hassle but it might cure the problem. Or might not.

- there is sometimes a problem if the iPod is connected up to the PC at too early a stage when installing the software. I was sure that the hadn't happened when I first attempted the installation but it might have been when I attempted to uninstall/reinstall. I just can't remember.

Nothing in the instructions pointed out the danger of connecting the iPod too early. According to the guy at the shop, if this was the problem merely uninstalling the iPod software would not be enough - I would have to restore my operating system at the setting prior to the "problem" installation. As I said, I'm not too technical, and this seemed fraught with possible unexpected consequences. Plus, of course, it might not solve my problem.

After much debate the shop reluctantly agreed to give us a refund. This wasn't the perfect solution - it left me with nothing to show for £100 spent, ongoing operating system problems and at least 15 hours farting around. But the alternative was £500 spent, more farting around, and still no guarantee of a working iPod so I took it.

The shop admitted that lots of people have problems installing iPods on PCs. I suggested these were being sold on a false prospectus, just plug in and go, whereas there were all sort of fairly common teething problems that people without a technical background would struggle to deal with. They agreed

I'm sure iPods are as great as everyone says they are if you can get them to work, but a little research unearthed a lot of people with similar problems to mine. So beware.

ArfArf, Tuesday, 3 February 2004 18:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Do you ever.. walk?

Um, no, actually. I'm not a student anymore, and I don't live downtown, so everywhere I go I have to drive to (which is mostly to work and back anyway). Also it's fucking -10 degrees out there.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 18:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Round the shops?

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 18:40 (twenty-two years ago)

The supermarket is so much better when you can tune out the sound.

My ipod tip, get a proper pair of headphones, any kind of earbud provides crap sound quality compared to an over ear headphone. plus proper headphones keep your ears warm. And do you really want that little airspace between diaphragm and ear drum?

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 18:44 (twenty-two years ago)

my first iPod died two weeks ago after 20 months (harddrive failure) and on sunday i was a stone cold sucker and bought another (10% off sale). so far i've spent $700 on iPod's and i can't say i regret it (plus i'm poor!).

has anyone else had an experience like this, with one dying that fast? i am saving for one currently but it's going to take me at least six months because i'm a poor college student, so if it dies a year or two later i'll probably go on a rampage.

i'm looking for the main ipod thread in a second though, if i'm missing stuff from that i'm sorry. i don't follow ilx very consistently.

Maria (Maria), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 18:47 (twenty-two years ago)

There's only really one area in downtown where there are a lot of shops within walking distance, but I don't think I can justify $300 for walking around maybe a half hour per week. Music in the grocery store would be pretty ace though.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 18:49 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, even with no walking, it's great for plugging into car stereos, taking round to people's houses and plugging in there, or taking on holiday with mini speakers.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 19:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, that's pretty sweet, before this thread non-headphone applications didn't really occur to me.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 19:04 (twenty-two years ago)

(PSSSST! this is why I've been saying.. get the goddamn two year warranty.. just budget the extra $30 to $50 or so upon first buying it. it's good insurance.. it's just over two bucks a month over time AT MOST.)

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 19:09 (twenty-two years ago)

you can extend apple care anytime up to the end of the first years warranty, so you can pay that extra later

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

A reminder that (I think) John Lewis give 2 years as standard.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 19:19 (twenty-two years ago)

damn, that's normally my line.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 19:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I find earbuds to be far more comfortable, though. And I'm very much not an audiophile.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 19:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Earbuds will hurt you. Trust me. Shun them. I'm not kidding.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 19:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I've got a nice pair of Sennheiser PX100s. I'd fully recommend them.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 19:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I got AppleCare, I'm assuming this is the warranty people are speaking of? I never actually opened the warranty to check so I'm just assuming it will cover the batteries if they go out.

Personally I find my iPod indespensible; also, I've had no issues at all using it on a PC.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 19:37 (twenty-two years ago)

db: when i bought my iPod they only offered a 90 DAY WARRANTY! and when i tried to get applecare they said no. fucking assholes. i've had so many screaming matches with their customer service reps.

and no maria, that doesn't happen often, but my girlfriend's ipod and mine died on the exact same day in a really expensive sid and nancy-type scenario.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 20:05 (twenty-two years ago)

they wouldn't let you buy Applecare? That is seriously fucked up. You can buy it over the apple website though, I think, right?

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 20:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Yancey, where did you go buy your iPod... FuckTech Bendover Electronics?

I got mine at Comp USA (which, acc. to some friends of mine, might as well be FuckTech Bendover Electronics) and I purchased an extra two-year warranty.. in fact, they were all in my face about offering it to me, and I didn't have to ask.

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 20:17 (twenty-two years ago)

they wouldn't let me buy it cuz my ipod was out of warranty. "but since i've bought my ipod you've extended subsequent generation's warranties by a year!" "yes, but we don't offer two year applecare for your ipod." TO INFINITY! i almost hit the d00d at the apple store in the head with my broken one on sunday.

(i got both of mine from the apple store, db)

Apple are selling these rubbery in-ear phones as a $39 upgrade. They look like the Sony ones that Michael Jones recommends. Has anyone tried them?

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 20:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Yancey, where did you go buy your iPod... FuckTech Bendover Electronics?

HAhahahahahaha

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 20:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, maybe "applecare" and "warranty" are two different things. The thing I have, I can use my iPod as a racquetball pad if I wanted to, then bring back the spare parts, say that "I dropped it really bad", and they'll give me a fresh one without question, as long as it's within the warranty.

Haha, moral of the story, don't buy Apple shit at the Apple Store? (weird)

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 20:21 (twenty-two years ago)

(Or at least Yanc3y's FuckTech franchise of the Apple store in his 'hood, apparently)

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 20:22 (twenty-two years ago)

iPods work great as a raquetball pads, which is more than can be said for the pathetic Windows 'competitors'.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 20:27 (twenty-two years ago)

anyone have any good ideas for what to do with a broken ipod? i wanna turn it into something cool, like a glove.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 20:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I mainly use mine as a compact mirror anyway.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 20:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Once again..

http://www.ipodsdirtysecret.com

Not to say this will happen to you. But it's a sobering lesson in any form of computer/platform fundamentalist worship.

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 20:37 (twenty-two years ago)

N., what Windows competitors? I don't think Windows have anything planned to compete with iPod until later this year at the earliest.. and it's supposed to involve video as well. Which I think conflicts with the whole aesthetic/appeal/convenience of the iPod. (If there are any right now, then I'd surely agree with you though)

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 20:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, but as I said, if the worst happens you can fit replacement batteries for $49.

http://www.ipodbattery.com/

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 20:39 (twenty-two years ago)

xpost - uh db I was only joking about the raquetball pad thing, but I suppose if I was referring to anything I meant rival hard disc mp3 players like Creative Audio and the Dell above that are designed for PCs not Macs.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 20:41 (twenty-two years ago)

check this fucker out:

http://www.tightaudiosystems.com/see_taz.htm

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 20:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Creative Labs, I mean.

I've just noticed that the dirtysecret website says that they had no luck with ipodbattery.com and that at the moment it only fits the older iPods. Well, blech. I'm sure it will all work out fine eventually. I'm an optimist.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 20:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh those.. haha... yeah, like I said "what Windows competitors?" :)

Re: batteries. Can you install these batteries without some form of toolcase and risk of destroying the internals? If my battery runs out while I'm listening to my iPod on a plane for instance, will it be practical for me to be able to unscrew the back of my iPod, and do all this shit, so I can continue on? Or should I pack my mini-screwdrivers and grounding wristpads along with the iPod?

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 20:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh - they do sell one for the slimmer iPods. Hurrah! All is right with the world.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 20:46 (twenty-two years ago)

anyone have any good ideas for what to do with a broken ipod?

sell it on ebay, someone will buy it

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 20:47 (twenty-two years ago)

DB wtf - no, I don't think they recommend changing them on a plane!

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 20:48 (twenty-two years ago)

(ie. they are for when your battery dies for good, not just when it's out of charge)

I think you can get external battery packs for long journeys.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 20:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Then what's the point? You can easily change batteries of any portable playback device anywhere.. that's why they're portable. I was aware of this flaw in the iPod design before I bought it, so I shouldn't bitch too much, but still.. K-Lame.

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 20:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I think you can get external battery packs for long journeys.

Oh? Well, that's what I was talking about. Is it just this little box with a firewire jack? Do tell.

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 20:50 (twenty-two years ago)

there are external battery packs that use AAs you can use on the plane that are supposed to give you up to 15 hours of battery time, but I don't know how well they work. Since I can't afford to take any plane trips now that I blew $500 on an ipod it is moot for me.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 20:51 (twenty-two years ago)

The point is if the battery will no longer recharge, db!

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 20:51 (twenty-two years ago)

(N, I gotcha now... see above)

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 20:52 (twenty-two years ago)

My ipod tip, get a proper pair of headphones, any kind of earbud provides crap sound quality compared to an over ear headphone.

Hmm, I think Etymotics will beat just about any circumaural headphone under £100, but they are ear-canal rather than earbud, I guess. Many of us feel pretty doofy walking around outside with a big pair of cans on. I've never got on very well with closed-back circumaurals - I find them a bit shut-in and dull - and open-back just isn't appropriate in public unless you want to annoy people.

I understand if people are uncomfortable with the short eardrum-speaker distance, but the acoustic isolation afforded by good ear-canal 'phones means you never need to drive them that loud anyway.

Donut Bitch, it's time to stop pasting that stupid URL everywhere. Apple's support is a rip-off, but it isn't that much of a rip-off.

iPods have a one-year warranty. If your iPod fails in the first six months, Apple repairs it for free. If you iPod fails after six months but before one year, Apple repairs it for $30. After one year if the battery fails you can send it to Apple and let them replace it for $106 or do it yourself for $50.

Applecare costs $60 extra and extends the base one-year warranty to two years. You can buy Applecare at any time up until your normal warranty expires. I assume repairs outside of the first six months will still cost you $30 even if you have Applecare, not sure.

Many retail stores like Best Buy and Circuit City in the US have their own extended warranty plans you can buy. I prefer these since they're not much more expensive than Applecare but are no-questions-asked and you can get service locally... even if you throw it against the ground in a fit of anger, bring in the pieces and they'll give you a new one.

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 22:51 (twenty-two years ago)

dean! (deangulberry), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 22:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Irregardless of the fact that MP3 players freak me out in general (I have no desire at all to listen to my entire music collection on shuffle!) the Ipod in its current incarnation is the color of the bottom of a toilet bowl. The mini-ipod (especially the glittery pink one) is more pleasing to my sensibilities--but not pleasing enough at over $200.

People have recommended the ipod to me as the solution for my storage woes (I am running up aginst the limits of my hard drive). I find this an interesting solution--to pay $300~ for a hard drive that is guranteed to die after a few years.

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 23:38 (twenty-two years ago)

A hard drive that is guaranteed to die after a few years = practically all magnetic media manufactured after 1997

Steve Jobs sez the prob w/Microsoft's portable audio/video player - as with other portable DVD players - is that although good headphones can come close to simulating a $10,000 speaker system, nothing portable can simulate a 50-inch plasma screen TV.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 00:06 (twenty-two years ago)

more importantly, the way 99% of people use their iPod or their discman or Rio or whatever, the additional cost for video usability is completely and utterly beyond worthless (HI I'M DRIVING A CAR.)

Hell, the only people who even bought portable DVD players were just poshy geeks, the same bunch who all got PDAs back when everybody was on AOL. The portable digital video thing is so stupid it hurts my mind, like those disposable DVDs Disney tried to market.

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 4 February 2004 00:12 (twenty-two years ago)

You know fhazel, you should probably actually read my other posts on this thread before attacking me for posting a URL. Just a tip. For starters, read what I wrote DIRECTLY AFTER THAT URL POSTING. For fuck's sake.

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 00:17 (twenty-two years ago)

And again, I totally agree that the idea of a portable audio/video player competing with the iPod is just ridiculous. MS should just concede this a defeat and just move on in other areas.

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 00:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Basically, the only way MS can come up with an iPod copycat type thing that can successfully compete with the iPod is if it does things that the RIAA doesn't want it to do -- like, I don't know, allow you to share your MSPod goodies with other MSPods, etc....(if you haven't noticed, Mac has been sucking the RIAA's, well you know) and while there's doubt MS would do such a thing (and there's plenty of evidence MS has been fellating the RIAA the same way re: media security issues), they're one of the few companies with the power to get away with it, if it thinks it can help themselves and ring on the eventuality of file sharing as a way of life. Granted, this is just fantasy speculation.

lyra (lyra), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 06:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Or are you claiming that the ipodsdirtysecret site is a conspiracy/fake story? If so, hmmmmmmmm, why so?

it's bunk for a couple of reasons. first, most ipods older than 18 months haven't needed to have their batteries replaced. second, apple will replace the battery on out-of-warranty iPods for $106 and that policy was in effect before the "ipod's dirty secret" video popped up. "unreplacable" does not mean "costs $106 to replace." the video is catchy (or at least NWA are) but it's still wrong.

like i said, it's a rip-off, but it's not that much of a rip-off.

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 06:26 (twenty-two years ago)

in case it isn't clear, i think everyone who can should buy the largest capacity ipod they can afford. but get applecare or an extended warranty, it's worth the extra money.

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 06:35 (twenty-two years ago)

You should have mentioned that the policy was in effect before the video was made in your first post... then I wouldn't have gotten so defensive.

(And we both are in agreement on your second point, as has been pointed out by either of us several times this thread already)

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 09:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Mary--I'm in the process of converting my CDs to MP3, and I store them is on data CDs. So even if the h/d on the iPod dies next month I still have the music available to me. Also, the "everything on shuffle" option is mostly for perverts like me; like John D sez, it's just as easy to listen to albums in full that way.

I actually haven't taken my iPod with me for a couple weeks now, in large part due to the fact that I just moved and have been too busy working on other stuff to bother, but I listen to it at work all the time, and anticipate doing so at home too. I have it hooked up to these Altec Lansing minispeakers--http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore?productLearnMore=T8355LL/A--and they sound GREAT. Seriously, I've owned bookshelf systems that get less volume and clarity than these--though it should be kept in mind that I'm nobody's idea of an audiophile and that I've owned some crappy systems. But they're pretty impressive nonetheless, and cheap. I'm very happy with them, plus they work as a dock, so when it's plugged in there are no battery problems. (Yet.)

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 09:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 09:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Matos, your storage solution is interesting, but wouldn't it be more cost effective for me to simply back up my mps to CD (without getting involved with the iPod at all)? Of course, for that, I would need a CD burner plus firewire card...

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 21:26 (twenty-two years ago)

why a firewire card? and uh, didn't you ask?

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 21:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Doug's AppleScripts For iTunes is a must-have for anyone using a Mac and an iPod, I've found. It's made life a lot easier. Also the smart playlists function. I'm happy with my iPod so far but I never would have bought it if VW had dash CD players as an option on my 2001 Beetle. Now that I'm going to be riding the subway to work, however, it may see a lot more use.

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 4 February 2004 21:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I need a firewire card (or a USB2 card) to enable an external CD-R to attach to my PC and run as God intended it to. (My question may have been rhetorical.)

However, things about iTunes I like: since I don't have the encyclopedic memory that many of my fellow-music lovers do, when I think of a song I sometimes cannot remember what album it is on (gasp!). With iTunes, I can easily find out. Also, I am not very neat and have problems finding albums even if I know which one I am looking for. With iTunes, just search and voila! (My pro-iStatement for the day.)

too much money dude! The Dell has twice the battery life and is a hundred bucks cheaper. Possibly I will not like their software (very mixed reviews) and it is USB, not firewire, but I'm gonna give it a try.

i've had major problems with music match software, but it's possible they've worked out the bugs since i've last used it (the late '90s). is that the only software the dell dj is compatible with?

also, how much difference is there between usb and firewire?

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 17:12 (twenty-one years ago)

usb 1.1 is SUPER slow for file transfers

firewire and usb 2.0 are pretty much on par and very fast

I think it's just the software it comes with. I was getting disheartened at the bad reviews for music match but then I read about another option: http://www.redchairsoftware.com/dudebox/

I'll try music match but it is nice to know there's other options.

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 18:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I used to own an ipod but ditched it in favor of a 128 MB flash palyer because:

1. The touch navigation is difficult; it is sometimes hard to tell if the unit has registered the touch (too hard and it doesn't register), as it is coupled with non-immediate response speed. This leads to double-clicking which makes navigation rather messy, or at least not as quick as one would like once one gets used to the interface. The older generation ipods and the mini ipods are better in this respect.

2. Constant attention to the battery life; if its used with any kind of regularity, it begs to be recharged every other day. The flash player on the other hand lasts through at least ten full album playbacks on a single AAA.

57 7th (calstars), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 19:13 (twenty-one years ago)

http://www.llanes-thibodeau.com/Marsha/MacStuff/ipodOC.jpg

Mary (Mary), Friday, 7 May 2004 03:58 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah they pretty famously do tv commercials, we have them to thank for Jet's takeoff. :(

So far so good, I've charged it and I downloaded the trial version of dudebox and am listening to the streets. sound is pretty nice. It has a nice blue glow too. If your mp3s are tagged correctly it sorts everything so you can browse by song artist or album as you like. I've played a bit with ipods but not a whole lot so I'm not really sure what to point out what's the same and what's different.

teeny (teeny), Friday, 7 May 2004 05:18 (twenty-one years ago)

teeny (teeny), Friday, 7 May 2004 05:27 (twenty-one years ago)

what is that magical device you posted a pic of, mark p?

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 7 May 2004 11:38 (twenty-one years ago)

it's the creative nomad jukebox 3. i've had mine for over a year and i don't go anywhere without it. it's bigger than an ipod (closer to the size of a discman), but i prefer it for all sorts of reasons.

1) the batteries are removable, which means that your unit doesn't die if the battery ever does (altho neither of mine have yet - plus i get about 12 hours on full charge)

2) you can pop it open and upgrade the hard drive manually if you want (i bought a cheap 20 gig hd and replaced it with a 60). it voids yr warranty but ipod owners don't even have the option of making this modification

3) it's got amazing recording capabilities, all sorts of ins and plus it lets you choose anything from 64kbs mp3 to lossless .wav as your format. lots of people have added mics and preamps to the thing and use it for sampling in place of a portable DAT machine

4) you can buy an add-on remote control that gives you an fm tuner and lets you record stuff off the radio straight to mp3, handy for radio shows etc

5) it's much, much cheaper than an ipod

6) they just upgraded the firmware so that it does everything you'd ever need it to, v. nice interface

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 7 May 2004 11:46 (twenty-one years ago)

what sort of ins?

'2) you can pop it open and upgrade the hard drive manually if you want (i bought a cheap 20 gig hd and replaced it with a 60). it voids yr warranty but ipod owners don't even have the option of making this modification'

You can do this on an iPod but the hard drives are a little harder to find in the retail channel.

Ed (dali), Friday, 7 May 2004 19:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Mark P has almost sold me on the Nomad.

Barima (Barima), Friday, 7 May 2004 19:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, but it's not breathtakingly beatiful, is it?

I'm such an iPod whore.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Friday, 7 May 2004 19:50 (twenty-one years ago)

it is DEFINITELY not as sexy as an ipod

ed if i'm not mistaken aren't the ipod hard drives proprietary and therefore more expensive? the nomads use regular 2.5" laptop hard drives so that helps. i spent $400 CDN last year on a 20 gig hard drive unit, bought a 60 gig hard drive for $300 and sold the 20 used for $100, so when it was all said and done i had a 60 gig mp3 player for $600 cdn. i'm sure you could do it much cheaper now..

ins: optical and line-in
outs: one headphone and TWO line outs
interface: usb 1.1 and firewire

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 7 May 2004 20:14 (twenty-one years ago)

mine's been through hell and back so it looks awful. its scratched up beyond belief and all the plastic molding has worn off the buttons with overuse, but i wouldnae trade it for anything!

well, unless they made 60 gig ipods with a good recording interface. i guess i would trade it for one of those.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 7 May 2004 20:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm gonna wait til I have a decent computer beofre pursuing an mp3 player.

Barima (Barima), Friday, 7 May 2004 20:40 (twenty-one years ago)

teeny the separate fm tuner has a built in mic that's decent for dictation and stuff but will only record @ 64kbps

any other mics you'd use with the unit would need to have some sort of preamp or phantom power and would plug into the optical/line in jack. this i think is pretty standard issue for an upscale recording device.

oh also you can do digital monitoring and increase input gain by +/- 14dbs on the unit itself which is also v. v. handy

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 7 May 2004 20:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Standard 1.8" drive, not nearly as common as 2.5" drives but still used in the smallest Toshiba and Sony Laptops, The interface is a standard ATA100 drive, admittedly more expensive but it is smaller.

Ed (dali), Saturday, 8 May 2004 06:31 (twenty-one years ago)

As long as this thread is open, I'd like to add another quick hosanna for the iPod: I am a PC user who uses USB to connect my CPU with my iPod, and most likely due to my repeated unsafe disconnecting of the thing out of impatience I managed to fry my iPod about a week ago. The performance got worse and worse and eventually it quit altogether; the hard-drive seemed irrepairably damaged and no amount of reformatting and diskchecks and so on were able to bring it back. I was furious and, since the damage was obviously my own fault and since I didn't have any proof of sale, I was sure that even if the warranty would be of any use I wouldn't be allowed to redeem it. Just to be sure I went on the Apple site and had a look around, finally locating the right form and filling it out with the serial number from the back of the iPod.
The very next day a shipping box came to my house by courier; I popped the iPod inside and sent it back, prepaid. Two days after that, without a single question asked, I received a brand-new, pristine iPod of the same model--and with my engraving restored and all.

antexit (antexit), Saturday, 8 May 2004 07:46 (twenty-one years ago)

this is why i'm considering springing for the ipod -- i want good customer service and i want to buy my product from a manufacturer that i know isn't going to go out of business in two months. i'm mostly a pc user but i've had pleasant experiences with apple customer service (when i needed to replace a fried keyboard* they sent me a free replacement right away).

*i didn't tell them i spilled beer on it.

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 8 May 2004 12:33 (twenty-one years ago)

so far things I like about the dell dj:

ability to change the tags of multiple songs at once (for all those badly tagged mp3s I downloaded)

sort by artist/album/playlist/genre (I really like the genre feature, I use it almost like a wider-ranging playlist feature, like put all my house tracks together and put it on random if that's what I'm in the mood to hear, or I've made a genre called 'moody' for the fennesz, sigur ros, massive attack kinda stuff)

really fast transfer even though I still only have USB 1.1!

getting the adaptor for the car so I can listen to it there, it comes with this little inline remote control that clips onto whatever so it's easier to skip around (pictured way above)

I think I just found something that'll allow me to put my CDs directly on the DJ without ripping them to my hard drive first, but I've been screwing around with this for like 16 hours and I'm going to bed now.

teeny (teeny), Sunday, 9 May 2004 02:50 (twenty-one years ago)

(All of that is, of course, available on the iPod as well except possibly the USB 1.1, which might or might not be.)

Casuistry (Chris P), Sunday, 9 May 2004 03:03 (twenty-one years ago)

mark p that sounds like a total wonder device! i love all the recording capability shit it seems to have.

still i'm happy with my ipod, it's small and light easy to use and looks nice and whatnot

and i got it for $80 canadian! so i can't complain

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 9 May 2004 05:13 (twenty-one years ago)

How the fuck did you get it for $80 Canadian?

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Sunday, 9 May 2004 06:06 (twenty-one years ago)

still digging the dell dj although I think the algorithm for random play might not be all that since it keeps giving me multiple tracks from the same album in a row (like I have 65 'electronic' tracks to choose from and the first five are from New Order's Get Ready?? weird.) I'm not even getting the full use out of this since I haven't used it much while driving. I'll be so pleased when I have to take a road trip and I don't have to scan radio forever and ever.

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 16:12 (twenty-one years ago)

The random play on the iPod doesn't seem especially random either. I get the same songs off of each album a lot.

I want an iPod that turns into a machine gun.

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 19:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, here's something I've been mulling over recently re: the iPod. They should invent a system whereby an iPod user can broadcast what they are listening to over a very short distance, say like 10-15 feet or whatever, so that any other iPod user can switch from 'broadcast' to 'receive' and hear what the other person is listening to. And of course you could turn the broadcast function off so no one would know you were listening to an Ayn Rand audiobook or whatever. Oh, and there would have to be some kind of identification system, like a pin or something. I always see people with iPods on the El and I wonder what they're listening too.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 19:29 (twenty-one years ago)

It has been interesting to watch the iPod go from cool gadget to being nearly ubiquitous on the DC subway system. Ditto for PDAs and wonky email-cellphone uglies like the BlackBerry. My boss just got a Treo 600 and one of my other coworkers got himself an Archos personal video player, which is like the most obnoxious thing I can imagine really.

I've been looking at iPods and alternatives again recently and decided none of them is right for me. My CD player is cumbersome at times and my headphones let too much sound leak in/out, but replacing them would be way too expensive, and when I had an iPod I barely used it outside of my car.

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 22 September 2004 19:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I pretty much only use my iPod on the commute to work (walk and take the El), so yeah, if I drove, I wouldn't really ever use it.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 19:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I walk and take the el quite a bit, so I figure I'll have lots of use for it. Plus, I don't have a car radio/stereo/tape/cdplayer, just that lovely shaking sound it makes sometimes.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 19:43 (twenty-one years ago)

In the end I got a Creative Zen Extra 60GB. A little bigger than an ipod, both size wise and storage wise, but being able to play wma,ogg files and not having to send the player to Apple when the battery ran out swayed it for me. Oh and it's 60GB, did I mention that?

I use it in the car a lot, using one of those tape adapters, especially handy on long journeys.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I've made up my mind to get one sometime this year, because a) I listen to music at work now, b) I will be much more likely to go to the gym this winter if I have music, and c) my car only has a tape player. They work pretty easily with a cassette deck adapter, right?

kephm, Wednesday, 22 September 2004 19:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Circu1t city only had silver mini ipods. DUMB!

Target had a pic of them out with a "See Salesperson" sign. There were 4 Target sales folk (all teenagers) standing around chatting in the electronics section. So I asked them about the mini ipod and they were like, "Uh, what? The mini what? We don't have whatever that is that you just said." Eventually I found a separate display that they are coming soon, but yeah... I think I'll go to Best Buy.

Everyone's a winner.

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 23 September 2004 14:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Sarah, my iPod has been nothing but trouble, basically. I hate the power management (that it runs out of batteries in 3 days EVEN IF YOU DON'T USE IT), it doesn't have a stop button (admittedly a fairly select pet hate) and I've had MASSES of trouble getting it to link to my PC, to the point where I'd pretty much given up on it as junk.

Also, and this irritates me because I'm anal, it no longer registers in iTunes the songs that were played on the iPod - my favourite feature is that you can follow how many times you have listened to a song, and it doesn't sodding work any more!

Add to that the fact that it's overpriced compared to its competitiors. It does look nice, but functionality very quickly overtakes how pretty it is, especially as it just sits in your pocket.

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 23 September 2004 14:07 (twenty-one years ago)

hmmm oh dear. although mine has linked to my pc instantly so that's one problem out of the way. don't think the times played thing is going to worry me too much. i did look into an iriver, but i wanted to buy a new ibook anyway so i got a deal for both. hopefully the battery thing won't worry me too much!

gem (trisk), Thursday, 23 September 2004 14:18 (twenty-one years ago)

i am having trouble trying to import the music from media player into itunes though, i thought that was going to be straightforward and it isn't, which is annoying as i have already burned lots of my cds onto my pc so can't really be arsed burning them again into itunes.

gem (trisk), Thursday, 23 September 2004 14:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I clicked on someone's free iPod referral and my virgin gmail account got filled with spam. I guess if you don't care about that, it's no problem.

I just liked looking over to the side and seeing (0) instead of (267).

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Thursday, 23 September 2004 15:36 (twenty-one years ago)

People it's worth getting an email address that you know you're going to abandon to the spam vultures as soon as your shiny, free iPod arrives. I dunno - not being in the US this is all rather academic for me.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Thursday, 23 September 2004 15:42 (twenty-one years ago)

i love my ipod. i liked it for a while, then this massive wave of affection hit me and it's been growing stronger every day. i've turned into one of those people that can't go anywhere without it.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 23 September 2004 15:55 (twenty-one years ago)

i didn't like them, either. solution: i bought a new pair.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 23 September 2004 15:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, you can do better with a $20 pair from any grocery store.

Ain't That Peculiar (kenan), Thursday, 23 September 2004 16:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I hate the earphones too, they don't fit right in my ears so a lot of the sound leaks out. So I've been using really cheap old ones instead. Sometimes I consider using my big fat puffy headphones that look like earmuffs, but when I see other people using those on the El I think that they are big dorks.

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 23 September 2004 16:03 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm sad that my big fat puffy headphones won't plug into my ipod. bfp headphones rule!

cºzen (Cozen), Thursday, 23 September 2004 16:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I have some Koss BFP headphones that I use for recording that were pretty cheap, I think maybe like $30, that have a 1/4" jack so you can use it with an iPod. I recommend them.

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 23 September 2004 16:13 (twenty-one years ago)

An ipod user I met told me that you can't get rid of songs from your computer once they're on your ipod, and you can't, say, connect it to any other computers. This keeps you from hooking up to a friend's computer and downloading songs--wtf! Is this true?

Also, I hear they last 2 years and then break down. I believe the latter because I had an Archos Jukebox 20-gig player and it lasted about a year and a half before dying from some manufacturing defect.

Richard K (Richard K), Friday, 24 September 2004 05:47 (twenty-one years ago)

being a new ipod owner i've been doing a bit of research on the apple homepage/faq today and also this site:

http://www.ipodlounge.com

which is very informative and might answer your questions. i think your friend means because itunes defaults to automatically update to the library on your computer, so if you delete stuff in the library it will be deleted from your ipod UNLESS you set itunes to not update automatically and just do it manually when you get new cds or whatever.

and i don't know about the "two years" thing but apparently the battery is only likely to last for about 500 recharges, that might be where that one is from.

I thought you had iTunes?

Alba (Alba), Monday, 25 October 2004 13:36 (twenty-one years ago)

its like a playlist that is based on some criteria - say the 60s - that is autosyched with your library

sometimes i like to pretend i am very small and warm (ex machina), Monday, 25 October 2004 13:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I suppose it would be possible to use iTunes without Smart Playlists, but it would be an awful waste.

Basically, it creates playlists based on certain criteria (eg. play me all indie songs under 3 minutes in length released between 1987 and 1993).

Alba (Alba), Monday, 25 October 2004 13:38 (twenty-one years ago)

The songs are still in I-tunes, but disappeared from the i-pod. And since I have a bajillion songs in I-tunes, I couldn't just click them all and drag them over this morning, so I just got one of NIck's playlists. Thankfully, he has pretty good taste.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 25 October 2004 13:40 (twenty-one years ago)

for example, if i need to do a bunch of retagging all at once, i can make a smart playlist of tracks i've added to itunes in the past hour; that way i won't have to go searching through the whole library for everything.

motown modown (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 25 October 2004 13:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Monday, 25 October 2004 13:51 (twenty-one years ago)

So I assume that all this 'smart playlist' business is what you put in the ID3v tags - or does it have to be done in iTunes? Oh, I see, you need to be an anal indieboy who obsessively makes sure every tag is correctly filled out to make smart playlists work? Um, that'd take me days. I'll make do with regular playlists, I guess.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 25 October 2004 14:01 (twenty-one years ago)

if you RIP yr own music, they are all fine

sometimes i like to pretend i am very small and warm (ex machina), Monday, 25 October 2004 14:02 (twenty-one years ago)

well i like the idea of an "everything you've added in the last week" one, that doesn't seem to involve too much tag work.

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 25 October 2004 14:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks for the insult, Mark!

Actually, you don't need to fill out the tags for all uses of smart playlists. As jody said, certain things, like 'date added' are of course done for you. I use 'date added' as useful part of managing what's on my iPod.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 25 October 2004 14:04 (twenty-one years ago)

x-post with Steve.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 25 October 2004 14:04 (twenty-one years ago)

if you RIP yr own music, they are all fine

Yeah - as jon says, the CDDB database gets most of the tag info for you.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 25 October 2004 14:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, sorry for being an evil music pirate, but most of my songs aren't ripped and neatly cddbed! And N., the reason I "insulted" you is because you said you spent hours the other week sorting out your tags and couldn't imagine an iTunes full of untagged songs!

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 25 October 2004 14:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, but what about customising the tags with my own sets of data like "songs for a rainy day in tillsonburg, ontario" or whatever

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Monday, 25 October 2004 14:09 (twenty-one years ago)

You can call the genres what you want, Rob, and there's this new 'grouping' tag I haven't got around to using yet, too.

Mark - tes, I did spend some time tagging my undated songs the other week. It's not kind to call me an 'anal indieboy' just cause of that, is it?

If you tag as you go, rather than let them all pile up in a mess, it doesn't feel like a chore, and smart playlists are fun and don't necessarily involve anuses.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 25 October 2004 14:14 (twenty-one years ago)

What?

Alba (Alba), Monday, 25 October 2004 14:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I use the party shuffle all the time, basically when I'm gonna spend the afternoon reading or loitering at home and can't be bothered looking for CDs to play. I generally tell iTunes to get songs from my 'never played' smart playlist.

xpost

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Monday, 25 October 2004 14:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I just use the regular shuffle. I can't be doing with this 'party' business.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 25 October 2004 14:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I am waiting for Ken to say something about the 'five-knuckle shuffle'.

Musicmatch Jukebox has a feature called 'Auto DJ', so ner. You can tell it what to Auto DJ from.

I rip my own stuff, but usually someone has helpfully typed in the titles already. Some of them are a bit spazzy though, e.g. 'Sedan Delivery [Omitted from LP]'. And people include the transaltions of Cuban song titles.

I hope you find my attempts to join in this conversation endearing.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Monday, 25 October 2004 16:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I am not a party person, so I have never toyed with party shuffle. But smart playlists great, especially if you've got more music than fits on your iPod.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 25 October 2004 16:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't really understand why Party Shuffle is better than putting iTunes on random -- unless you like seeing what songs come next. But generally that ruins the fun of random for me.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 25 October 2004 16:45 (twenty-one years ago)

BTW, I might buy an iPod now that I have to commute to work by train.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 25 October 2004 16:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the idea is you can manually add things to it, if you want. Or take things out.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 25 October 2004 16:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't like how you can't mess with the running order of a Smart Playlist. If you want to monkey with it, you have to make a plain New Playlist out of your Smart one.

I haven't bought my iPod yet, and I'm wondering if I can start getting stuff/playlists/tags 'ready' now

Jesus yes. I got mine yesterday and have spent a total of 4 hours retagging and renaming mp3s, and I'm not even half-way through yet. Grab a program called Tag&Rename (Windows-only afaik) and make sure that each mp3 has an id3 tag containing track number, title, artist, and album name. This will mean when you tell iTunes to import your music it'll just automatically file everything correctly. (which will save you A LOT of hassle)

Andrew (enneff), Tuesday, 26 October 2004 01:50 (twenty-one years ago)

But it was Mark (a PC user) who was anti-tagging.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 26 October 2004 01:51 (twenty-one years ago)

What the hell is wrong with id3 tags? They make sense, god damn it.

Andrew (enneff), Tuesday, 26 October 2004 01:52 (twenty-one years ago)

(Also if you tag 'em properly in the first place, then iTunes will never have to edit your precious mp3s. You can even mark 'em read-only.)

"my ipod up and f-ing died yesterday. I weep bitter tears"

have you tried doing a hard reset? (do a google for directions) also, the internal battery cables come unplugged quite easily--apparently you can pry to case open and reconnect it.

I thought my girlfriend's iPod was a gonner a few weeks back. It wouldn't power on, and I tried charging it using the AC wall charger (both her charger and mine), but it did nothing. However, when I plugged it into my computer direct via firewire, it started up & started charging.

appple needs to make a game format for these

sometimes i like to pretend i am very small and warm (ex machina), Tuesday, 26 October 2004 18:42 (twenty-one years ago)

"export presentations" = edit some photos together with sound clips and music, playback with iPod, should be relatively simple to do if you just start with a plan and don't want to be making a lot of changes

the 60 gig version has both, stupid! what would even be the point?

iPod Photo looks like something that could work very well for them. I'm biased but really the average consumer now uses computers for two things - music and pictures - now you can carry them around. For a pile of money. Still though 60GB portable with FW400/USB2, I could back up the entire contents of my drive, It would be cool to write a kind of Knoppix bootable image to that with all my stuff on it and just carry my entire computing needs around in my pocket, then boot from USB. I mean that's all my songs and everything just about, 60 gigs, I use Gmail to store my schoolwork, and office desktop for work-work.

Now I'm just seeing a future where everybody just plugs into a mobo with optical drive + flatscreen and keyboard attached when they want to use a computer, and everything they need is on a portable battery-powered writable drive.

What game format? I mean besides like Breakout or Asteroids the interface is a little limited don't you think?

I'm amazed the battery life is supposed to be higher with the color LCD, actually.

Okay I have to read books now

is it? it's definitely slower on my machine, but I can't for some reason have 2 firewire devices on my pc, the ipod disconnects the drive, so I connect the drive through USB 2 to prevent that. It's not so much slower that it's annoying yet though.

If you're Canadian you still have a month to try to win one for yourself at http://www.pepsi.ca/ipod . They give away an iPod every hour. Click on the link for the contest rules. I believe it is item #7 which gives a link for a No Purchase Necessary entry which you can do once every hour. You may become obsessed with doing this every hour you're awake. The alternative to doing it this way is to get entries into the contest by buying bottles of Pepsi products. I actually managed to win two iPods before I decided to stop but I've read of other people who have won 3, 4, or even 5.

Tell me: should I KEEP an ipod? I got the U2 20GB for X-Mas, albeit right after I admitted I wanted to get a Creative Zen Ninjamawhozeewhatsis as it was reportedly better and had 80% less battery trife. Now mum is offering to keep it and let me take a bit of cash to buy the Creative.

I feel kinda insolent taking the cash, but as a total music fiend I want the very best on the market. We can't really return the ipod either. So what should I do? I'm counting on you all.

Captain GRRRios' Giggletits (Barima), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 15:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay, a few things:

1) USB 2.0 is technically faster than FireWire 400 if you look at the raw numbers...480 Mbps to 400 Mbps. As Professor Williams points out above, though, it's rarely that simple. USB 2.0 is faster in short bursts, but for sustained transfer, FireWire always wins...which means if you load a bunch of stuff all at the same time, or stream data, FireWire is the one to get. If you're ripping and loading one album at a time, it doesn't matter at all.

2) iPods are fantastic to look at and fantastic to use and fantastic to listen to, and I'd love them to bits if it wasn't for the battery issue...but I guess having a user-accessible battery would kill the clean lines of the design, and theoretically give the user access to the inside of the player, which could mean modding and monkey business, and heaven knows we wouldn't want THAT. If you're willing to pay Apple to change your battery when it inevitably dies, then it may well be worth it for the style element. It's not that important to me. Most of the recent Creative players have user-accessible batteries, and while they aren't as stylish as the Apple versions, they're certainly functional enough for me. The new Zen Micro even adds a "DJ" feature into the menu system, which brings it that much closer. (Considering it gives you access to the battery, and more disk space for the price, too, I'd certainly recommend it to PC users as a great alternative. Alas, no Mac drivers, though.)

3) The U2 iPod may well become a collector's item, so think twice before taking what's behind door #2. The iPod is still a fantastic player, even if it is tainted by Adam Clayton's signature.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 16:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Does the 20GB Zen model have a removeable battery? I thought it was only mini (5GB version) that did? I read a lot and I decided that the iPod was the safest bet to get despite the battery problems. If I already had an iPod though, I definitely wouldn't trade it in for something that (although it has longer battery life) basically has the same problems (you can't remove the battery) without having the same level of support (EVERYONE is going to be able to find a new battery for their iPod in the next five-ten years, I wouldn't be so sure Creative Zen support will be as easy to come by.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 16:40 (twenty-one years ago)

The first Zen didn't, but then they smartened up...the Zen Xtra did, and so did the Zen NX. It doesn't look like the Zen Touch does, unfortunately.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 16:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Right, so you 2 are in favour of keeping it? Sean's last point is good - despite Bono's signature (let alone the others), it is a very good looking item.

Creative doesn't do Mac? Cause until I get a laptop, that would be a massive problem, seeing as I'm doing everything from an OSX.

Captain GRRRios' Giggletits (Barima), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 17:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, unfortunately, if you're a Mac guy, it's probably best to stick with the iPod...it works great, and it's already paid for!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 17:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Though it is interesting to point out that the new Rio players work with Mac, so maybe there is still an alternative...and the new Rio players have a fantastic menu system that gives you the ability to play only newly-added stuff, rarely-heard songs, and other such breakdowns. The Carbon is 5GB, same price as the Mini or the Micro. User controls aren't quite as user-friendly, though.

is $269 for a refurbished 40GB model an acceptable risk?

How old is it, what was fixed on it, who fixed it? Is there a warranty of any kind, or any recourse if it up and dies? I saw something about the HP ones being more "Windows-centric", whatever that means. $269 is obviously a good price, but... I don't know, for tech things I can't get in and mess with myself, I like having some kind of warranty, even just 30 days or something.

Rock Hardy: aye, get one. There's no functional difference between the two. And it's top.

But there are new ones due this week...

stet (stet), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 17:32 (twenty years ago)

you should definitely go for the 2 year warranty - i've had my ipod replaced *twice* because of that warranty, and i've only had it for one year! (yeah, it's a bad sign that i've had it replaced twice, but i don't know if other mp3 players are any more reliable.)

Maria (Maria), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 18:21 (twenty years ago)

Thanks for the input, everybody. By this time tomorrow I will have lost my iPod cherry.

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 18:21 (twenty years ago)

I received the iPodmInisIlver today. Cute. I'm not sure if they got me a warranty though. Are the little ones as prone to breaking? Also, I got a $30 gift certificate for iTunes. What songs should I download?????????

Ok, so, done. Baby's first iPod. I don't know that it's possible to be happier with a purchase.

Man Man (kenan), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 00:02 (nineteen years ago)

answer to this question: yes you should.
i now have mine, simply sweet purchase.

Related question:

Anyone ever done the battery replacement surgery themselves or know someone who has? I cannot fathom a) paying the full Apple price or b) waiting for it to be fixed.

In the alternative, does anyone have any battery-boosting ideas? Mine will only get about 5 hours on a charge (it is three years old, so not totally unexpected)

Big Loud Ape Mountain (Big Loud Mountain Ape), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 12:04 (nineteen years ago)

sunny successor (katharine), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 12:48 (nineteen years ago)

My brand new, week-old iPod is getting about 6 hours off a fully charged battery. The box says "up to 20." This is incredible fucking bullshit.

Man Man (kenan), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 12:49 (nineteen years ago)

I can play mine for about 5 45-min journeys over 3 days before it runs out. What REALLY annoys me is how quickly it goes flat WHEN YOU DON'T EVEN USE IT.

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 12:53 (nineteen years ago)

I was going to fit mine myself but bottled out when I saw that a local watch battery repair place had started doing it for £40 or something.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 13:03 (nineteen years ago)

As is probably noted upthread somewhere, only do it if you don't mind iTunes. Because the iPod is basically a portable iTunes player.

Also things to keep in mind: Apple goes to ridiculous lengths to keep a bod from sharing files. To this end, you cannot (easily) move MP3s from an iPod to a computer, you cannot (easily) burn a CD composed of tracks on an iPod, and your iPod (technically) is "bonded" with your computer and might not be usable on another computer. And the earphones that come with are pretty much shit.

That said: I've had mine for several months and I'm pretty happy with it thus far. My last MP3 player lasted one month past the end of its rather short warranty. We'll have to see how much better the iPod fares.

Also: if your decision to buy an iPod is at all fueled by its video capabilities, you may want to wait for the next generation iPod. The video feature on the current iPod is nice but it's awfully small.

Deric W. Haircare (Deric W. Haircare), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 13:40 (nineteen years ago)

I had an iPod for eighteen months before the battery finally went out. That's 22 bucks a month for a portable music player. Twice as much as XM or Sirius.

If I could replace the battery on my own, without having to use tweezers and a hairdryer or whatever, it'd be different. I mean, I can replace the battery in my goddammed truck without jimmy-rigging it or voiding a warranty. To hell with it.

i've never had a problem using my ipod on other computers. re: moving tracks from your player to itunes, it's very easy (basically one click) and cheap ($8) to download p0dw0rks or something similar.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 15:50 (nineteen years ago)

bah! i take it back, it's broke within 3 days of use. Although it was purchased second hand, should we just not buy second hand because we cannot trust anybody?

Today, I hate people.

i bought the sony walkman thing instead

i have an awful lot of music on my hard drive, and am considering purchasing an ipod after my creative zen started becoming unreliable... is it particularly difficult/annoying/time-consuming to transfer selected chunks of the music on the hard drive to the ipod? i already listen to all my music via itunes.

stevie, Saturday, 12 May 2007 10:44 (eighteen years ago)

You'll probably need a new version of iTunes but no, it's easy.

sort of a combined computer/iPod question: I have a Mac, and a backup of my iTunes library on an extrenal firewire hard drive, and will soon be getting a laptop PC for college. I'm also thinking of getting an iPod, but I can't figure out how best to get all my choons onto both the iPod and the laptop (which unfortunately, doesn't have a firewire port). is there a way to transfer them from the iPod onto the laptop? and is the iPod linked to a single computer, or did I make that up?

bernard snowy, Saturday, 12 May 2007 13:58 (eighteen years ago)

an ipod can't work (as intended) with macs and pcs at the same time - it's one or other - but a regular iPod doesn't have to be linked to a single computer. files bought off of iTunes Music Store are limited to a certain number of devices.

assuming your laptop and iPod are USB2 connectable, you could possibly transfer from Mac to PC using the iPod as an external hard drive. can PCs read unix formatted disks? if so you could format the iPod UFS and use it to transfer music to the laptop. you may then have to reformat it to make it work with iTunes.

Alan, Saturday, 12 May 2007 14:20 (eighteen years ago)

okay, I'm reading the Wikipedia article now, and it says that the iPod is formatted as either FAT32 or HFS+ when you first connect it. but OS X can write to FAT32, right? so am I correct in thinking that I could connect it to my PC, allow the normal formatting to take place, then turn on the "Enable Disk Use" option and use it to transfer my music library from my Mac to my PC, where I would import it into iTunes and then, finally, put the songs back onto my iPod in a playable way?

stevie, Saturday, 12 May 2007 15:43 (eighteen years ago)

I've used a FAT32 formatted ipod on both Windows and OSX with no issues. Just plug it into the Windows box first.

Also, if you can plug the ipod into the PC and the Mac, why can't you plug your external hard drive into either? My library is on an external drive, and both Windows and Mac iTunes use this to update my ipod with no problems, though admittedly it's easier to have one primary version of iTunes.

I could, but I would need to buy a new one that connects via USB rather than Firewire, since the laptop I'm getting has no Firewire ports.

bernard snowy, Sunday, 13 May 2007 06:53 (eighteen years ago)

PC software for mov to ipod compatible mp4s - search for videora ipod convertor, its the easiest to use. There is another good convertor called mediacoder, but its got a lot of things to configure.

Sandy Blair, Sunday, 13 May 2007 08:27 (eighteen years ago)

I've had my Ipod mini for just over 2 years, and apart from a few problems at the start getting it to work with my computer it's generally been pretty good. However over the last few weeks the battery life's been noticeably shorter and the battery indicator on the display isn't reliable. THEN over the last couple of days I've been charging it up every night, listening to it for under two hours a day and it's died by 6.30pm on my way home. Tried to charge it up and it won't even switch on, the display is dead. Has this happened to anyone else? Has the battery totally gone and if so what should I do?

Not the real Village People, Sunday, 13 May 2007 11:12 (eighteen years ago)

VideoWizard lets you convert your videos without needing to understand any computer lingo.

this is exactly my speed, thanks sandy!

stevie, Sunday, 13 May 2007 11:35 (eighteen years ago)

i've had mine for over two years now and it's still running strong. even the battery! life would be filled with far less "music syncing up to the world" strangness without it.

haitch, Sunday, 13 May 2007 12:47 (eighteen years ago)

ipod purchased. hair on chest. he-man status attained.

currently dumping music on there at the moment. and videos of sonic youth on Night Music in 1989. this is very exciting.

stevie, Sunday, 13 May 2007 12:58 (eighteen years ago)

I replaced the battery in my three year old ipod last fall. It took like ten minutes and cost twenty bucks from ipodbattery.com or something similar, so it was well worth it as far as I'm concerned.

joygoat, Monday, 14 May 2007 01:24 (eighteen years ago)

I wanna replace my 3 y.o. iPod, which I find increasingly too small (20 gb), but I have a feeling a new gen is just around the corner. Does anyone know anything about that?

baaderonixx, Monday, 14 May 2007 08:37 (eighteen years ago)

No facts per se, but when my old iPod (also about 3yo) died earlier this year, I ran across a website somewhere that indicated where various Apple products were in their life cycle and its forecasts were in line with your feeling (so I bought a Nano). I forget exactly what they suggested was coming down the pike.

Don't remember the address, but Google is your friend. (Try searching for iPhone, I think that's how I ran across it - will be easier than searching for iPod.)

mitya, Monday, 14 May 2007 08:42 (eighteen years ago)

if i put a sticker of snoopy on the back of my ipod, would i be voiding my warranty?

stevie, Monday, 14 May 2007 17:24 (eighteen years ago)

three weeks pass...

I guess I'm just posting this here because I want sympathy, but my iPod fell out of my pocket while I getting out of a cab. She's gone. Stupid pockets that everything falls out of. Stupid stupid me.

So now I have to buy another one, and I'm annoyed at the demise of the 60 gig. 30 is fine, and I'll probably get another 30, but the only other option now is 80 gigs? That's a lot of damn iPod, man.

kenan, Monday, 4 June 2007 17:56 (eighteen years ago)

Also, why does an 8 gig nano cost the same as a 30 gig regular?

kenan, Monday, 4 June 2007 18:02 (eighteen years ago)

cost of flash memory is higher than HD, also apple are slapping a big margin on their most popular pod.

Ed, Monday, 4 June 2007 18:03 (eighteen years ago)

flash vs. hard drive innit

brrrrrrrng xpost!

Jaq, Monday, 4 June 2007 18:03 (eighteen years ago)

I have filled up my 4 gig mini, which I luv (it's pink and all) and I am sorely sorely tempted by an 80 gigger which sounds immense and should last me until I DIE but only black or white??

Jaq, Monday, 4 June 2007 18:06 (eighteen years ago)

You can upgrade the hard disks on the minis quite easily if you fancy a diy upgrade. (also put flash in if you like). Just google for tips.

Ed, Monday, 4 June 2007 18:09 (eighteen years ago)

six months pass...

My creative zen jukebox xtra thingy that I've had for years and years has finally kicked the bucket. They no longer make it and I'm sure there's now something better available anyway. So, ilx, please share your tales of ipods here. Should I buy an ipod? Or something else?

mouse, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 04:11 (eighteen years ago)

The iPod is just fine, but it has a ton of haters, all of whom will submit their lists of absolutely necessary features that it doesn't have but which the X-Tron Media Commando does have. If you were a feature creature, then you probably would know all of these anyways and wouldn't ask for advice here, so just get an iPod.

libcrypt, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 05:58 (eighteen years ago)

I just got an iPod Touch, and, now that it is jailbroken, it seems completely awesometastic. THAT is how much a laptop should weigh.

Casuistry, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 06:07 (eighteen years ago)

Hmmm. Anyone have a toshiba gigabeat? Or one of the current creative models? Or something by cowon?

mouse, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 21:14 (eighteen years ago)

what does jailbroken mean? i want something that is just basically like a hard drive that plays music, not something that is a prissy pain in the ass.

bell_labs, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 21:19 (eighteen years ago)

Please to advise where I may purchase a X-Tron Media Commando? Kthxbye.

SeekAltRoute, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 21:38 (eighteen years ago)

lol get a mac

DG, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 21:38 (eighteen years ago)

Jailbroken means you can get past Apple's imposed limitations, install 3rd party apps -- it basically becomes a PDA with a kick-ass interface that, oh yeah, happens to play mp3s. Which is kinda more what I want. I wanted a little handheld web browser.
