Cars: Search & Destroy

I have a company car. Before 4:30 this afternoon, it was a 1998 Chevy Malibu. Dull emerald green (sorta), 80,000+ miles (from lots of job-related driving, and LOTS of recreational driving). It was dinged up, the lights around the stick shift died, it always ran low on coolant, the breaks died 3 times, but I liked the car. It's at the glue factory right now.

My new company car is a brand spankin' new Ford Explorer. Big behemoth of a SUV. At first, I blanched, due to the piss-poor mileage (20 MPG on the highway! woo!) and the environmental concerns involving such crap-mileage cars. But it drives nice. And, shit, like I'm actually going to bitch about a FREE CAR.

But what I want to know is 1) what's your ride, 2) what's your ideal ride, and 3) ...um... your favorite car movie. Yeah, that's the ticket.

David Raposa, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Favorite movie (in honor of Corey Haim) - _License to Drive_. That genre ... they don't make 'em like they used to.

1.) I have a really old (1987) Saab, rose quartz color, which is grey but pinkish in the sun. The upholstery and dash have been replaced, and it's in good condition.

2.) Aw, the car I own is my ideal ride, it's paid for, has a hatchback so I can lug a lot of crap with me if I need too, and is dependable.

3.) Don't have a favorite car movie...only learned to drive when I was 25, I had to for work. Growing up in NY, I didn't need a car.

three months pass...
I am thinking of buying a chevy malibu, they've redone them for 2004. This will be my first new car if I can get up the nerve to spend that kind of jack.

teeny (teeny), Friday, 28 May 2004 16:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmm, in that class I'd look at spending a little more on a VW Passat GL or GLS, or a Nissan Altima which I had as a rental. I'd think you'd want to look at a Honda Accord too...

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 28 May 2004 16:38 (twenty-one years ago)

FIrst two albums were great, but they were largely crap after Candy-O.

Oh bahahaha.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 28 May 2004 16:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I am distrustful of American automobiles. They are too expensive for what you get in most cases because of grossly inflated manufacturing costs.

If you buy a VW be aware the the total cost of ownership is higher than almost any other car except a Saab or some such. The warranty is for shit and you WILL get fucked in the ass by the dealership the minute anything goes wrong.

I would totally support getting a Nissan or Honda at this point, I've also heard that Hyundai has turned itself into quite the success story re: features & reliability for the money.

I think that unless you ABSOLUTELY want the latest model it's better to go with used. I am rapidly becoming acquainted with the fact that your purchase loses (at least) a third of its value as soon as you drive it off the lot, resale-wise.

TOMBOT, Friday, 28 May 2004 16:44 (twenty-one years ago)

1) I drive a black 2003 Chrysler Sebring Coupe. I wanted a couple with a big backseat that folded so I could carry people and stuff, but (ahem) in style. Anyways it now has 35K miles in 15 months of ownership oh my! But no problems so far ...

2) I guess if someone were going to up and give me a car it would be a Mercedes CL600. I saw one at the autoshow and it was gorgeous, I was filled with lust. Though looking it up right now it doesn't offer a manual transmission and my car needs a stick! I'd pick a BMW 645Ci instead but the idrive scares me ...

3) The car chase in 52 Pick-Up is quite exciting.

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Friday, 28 May 2004 21:13 (twenty-one years ago)

As cool looking as the J Mays-designed retroFords are, I would avoid American cars and trucks across the board.

What happens when a Mini Cooper and a Ford F-150 meet a fixed object (hint: the "F" stands for "fatality")

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Saturday, 29 May 2004 00:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd love a mini but I have the GM family discount which means I automatically receive at least 12% of MSRP on top of any other rebates. It makes it kind of hard to look at anything else.

teeny (teeny), Saturday, 29 May 2004 22:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, the cars certainly lost a great deal of their resale value.

Skottie, Sunday, 30 May 2004 12:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm looking at cars right now.

What I should get is a Civic Hybrid or a Prius.

What I want is a bright red brand new Ford F150. Ten miles to the gallon SUCKAZ.

adam (adam), Sunday, 30 May 2004 13:29 (twenty-one years ago)

The Prius is WAY better than the Civic Hybrid. Both underperform on mileage (versus stated), but the Prius does better (it's also pretty cool inside). Be prepared to wait several months from the time you order it.

I don't have any money, but I would nevertheless like to decide which car to pin my affections on, for future reference.

It must be cute. Small. The color should be perhaps be red. With a cream interior? Leather?

So . . .

http://www.jkoons3.com/graphics/Jetta-2.jpg

or

http://aerorentacar.com/images/bug.jpg

?

Other options, Mini Cooper, Toyota Corrolla (not the same cuteness factor, but drove as a rental car and liked it).

One problem is that I'm not that fond of the "new" Jetta.

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 21:02 (twenty years ago)

The "new" Jetta is terrible. It looks too much like a bland Toyota.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 21:12 (twenty years ago)

I drove a Toyota Matrix (corolla +1) today and liked it all right. I wouldn't get another volkswagen, personally.

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 19 April 2005 21:12 (twenty years ago)

Mary: Get a Zipcar membership, you can try out all of them! There's no monthly charge, just the application fee and then you pay as you go.

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 19 April 2005 21:16 (twenty years ago)

I have driven the Prius, the Scion xA, and the Matrix so far. I think the Scion wins out of that bunch though the Matrix appeared to have better acceleration. The Prius does get lovely mileage but fuck that dashboard layout, thoroughly annoying. And FWIW I've also driven a Jetta and owned a Beetle and the Jetta kicks the Beetle out of the stadium in all categories save roundness (and apparently "safety" but oh wtfever)

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 19 April 2005 21:22 (twenty years ago)

I just looked at the New Jetta colors--they are so drab and they don't even offer red. So there is no way I am getting a New Jetta. I don't like how the New Jetta is more rounded and sedan like, I like the boxy Old Jetta.

I thought the Beetle would be a lot chepaer than the Jetta, bc: tiny, 2 doors, twee, but the standard package is just like 1,500 cheaper than a Jetta. Why?

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 21:27 (twenty years ago)

I have a vague hankering for another "classic" SAAB 900, argh begone.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 21:35 (twenty years ago)

the Beetle is what's referred to as a "Boutique" car, eg they know you ain't buying it out of pragmatism or you'd just get a golf or a jetta. The thing IS a golf for the most part, just with an Xtreme Makeover applied and the $$$ to match.

I currently drive an '03 Jetta (silver) which I love I had a very slick Audi A4 back during dot-com mania, but the payments and *insurance* were killing me. The new Jetta exterior is terrible and makes it look like it's trying to be a corolla, which is a nice enough car, but why do this to the Jetta?!

I'm thinking about another A4 in black this time next year, maybe two or three years old as the new one's (with the full "Auto Union" style grill) aren't really that special to me. I'm also considering the Prius and the Toureg (but only because the interior is so beautiful).

While the new Jetta's styling is a mis-step, the upcomig Passat is beautiful!

Try to park in the shade. Use windshield sunshade. Leave sunroof popped up. Sometimes leave windows cracked. Sear ass, backs of legs and hands on hot leather seats.

OH! I'm also considering the new Mustang, which isn't really my usual style of car, but it's so beautiful and seems to be an amazing value! I like the sort of charcoal metallic version. The interior has little odd bits and pieces, but the overall shape - especially the hood and front end - is sublime.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 23:26 (twenty years ago)

I think the Mustang is a good choice if you're looking for something to have fun in for a few years and then get rid of. it's cheap for a reason --- don't be surprised if it self-destructs at 80K miles or less.

The new Mustang is one of the few new cars I solidly like. Too bad the Ford dealerships have been nothing but asses about it - putting a $6000 to $7000 dealer "markup" on it and refusing test drives to people interested in the GT. I was able to test drive the V6 though and concluded that the GT is the only way to go - it'll pretty much pass anything except for gas stations.

Mary, the mini is a good car, estate agent associations aside. It's mini BMW with handling and build quality to match although I'd imagine it also has servicing costs to match a BMW as well. Built in Oxford by stout yeomem of Englande etc. It is a very small car though. Real adults can't really sit in the back, at least not for very long.

Do you get renaults in the states because a turbo Diesel renault megane might be right up your street. Quirky styling cheap to run, quite quick, easy to drive. Loads of room in the back and boot whilst still being a little smaller than a golf on the outside. My cousin and his wife have them and think they are great and I've had them as hire cars a lot and think a great deal of them. Also the safest in the class I think. They have a service interval of about 20,000 kilometers as well.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 07:26 (twenty years ago)

Aparently, mexico is the closest place you can get a renault. Oh well.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 07:28 (twenty years ago)

My family had a Renault for a few weeks in the '80s. It prompty broke down and we went back to our old German-car buying patterns. It is cute though, now that you mention it.

I'm disappointed that Jetta is no longer looking toward the youth market. They are trying to hold on to the youths who bought before but are now grown up and married--but what about the people who are still youthful?

Re the Mini: I'm sure it's a great car for dashing around the city, but I'm not sure it is a suburban dream. I've read reports that it is a bit sluggish to accelerate and can be a bit patchy on the open road. Also, the dashboard looks hella confusing to me.

I think the Golf could be a good compromise. Not particularly cute, but with a certain oafish charm. Cheaper than a Beetle (with more room) and less aspirational than a Jetta.

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 21:22 (twenty years ago)

I love the Golf! Note, the subtly updated body style should be around soon in the US.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 21:40 (twenty years ago)

Search: Japanese cars

Destroy: my p.o.s. Ford Taurus. please.

(though i do have a weakness for cars that are shaped like this, usually 80's buicks)

Amon (eman), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 21:47 (twenty years ago)

if you get the 2 door just get a GTI and race people in it after adding an after-market cooling intake and a slightly larger exhaust to drop the backpressure. You should also invest in some of those fancy sparkplugs that add 2 or 3 hp each and look into acquiring crossdrilled discs plus a set of low profile michelins and possibly a more rigid suspension but from my experience the golf ride can be pretty stiff to begin with. Stock is for chumps though.

I would suggest the 4 door.

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 20 April 2005 21:49 (twenty years ago)

Eek, I better get it before they come out with the New Golf and ruin everything. Now, who wants to buy it for me? They don't have the cream interior, so I guess it is grey--cloth.

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 22:01 (twenty years ago)

The new Golf is nice. Nothing drastic.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 22:03 (twenty years ago)

I don't like it! It's too space-age and blobby, and I hate the headlights. Why do they have to ruin everything?

Maybe I should just go for a Toyota Corolla that will turn on a dime, fit easily into parking spaces, run forever, and not feel the need to make any design statements.

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 22:09 (twenty years ago)

Used to have a 1975 Toyota Corona wagon, until a friend wrote it off.

Nothing at the moment, but looked at one of these yesterday (w/o the paintjob & fancy addons):
http://www.chrysler.gil.com.au/DrfVnHgn.jpg
Probably will get something similar, but a Ford or Holden version. Anything between 1972-1979

Would love one of these: http://www.allpar.com/model/images/charger/1969-dodge.jpg
or these:
http://www.uniqueautoart.com/vhcharger01.jpg

Mad Max, Italian Job, Gone in 60 Seconds (original), Death Race 2000... the list could go for ages.

PS. Fuck you to anyone wanting an SUV or similar. Hope you die in a rollover.

You're not 2600% more likely to be killed or injured if you have a collision with them though.

The missing pic is a '69 Dodge Charger. Like Dennis Hopper's in 'Blue Velvet'

Sasha (sgh), Thursday, 21 April 2005 08:27 (twenty years ago)

The mini is fairly quick in standard form, 10.9s to 60mph which is no slouch and the Copper S version is 7.9s to 60mph, which is pocket rocket territory.

My pick of the golf is the GT TDI. Good acceleration. good fuel economy. the 4Motion version would be good if you could afford it. The S TDI is a good seond option.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 21 April 2005 08:52 (twenty years ago)

And besides most cars have the ability to accelerate far faster than people do accelerate.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 21 April 2005 09:28 (twenty years ago)

Well, I doubt that late-60s vehicles are much safer than today's SUVs, but maybe this horse has been beaten enough.

I have a '66 Barracuda (not running now), and I really wouldn't want to get hit in that. The gas filler tube goes through the passenger compartment because of the big fastback window, so any disruption there would likely spray gas gasoline all over the compartment.

nickn (nickn), Thursday, 21 April 2005 19:17 (twenty years ago)

Of course the Golf GT TDI is not available in the states, it appears. Diesel cars don't seem to be a thing in the US and performance diesels are a non-starter.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 21 April 2005 19:20 (twenty years ago)

We used to have a Diesel car. It was difficult going up hills.

Is the UK all-Diesel?

I pointed out the Golf to my mom today and she confirmed my worst suspicions: "It looks like a small station wagon." :(

Maybe I should just pretend to care about the environment and get a Prius. But can't environmentally safe cars come in boxy packages?

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 21 April 2005 20:17 (twenty years ago)

UK is far form all diesel. They are much more popular on the continent. They get good fuel economy. It used to be the case that they were inferior performers compared with petrol equivalents but this is no longer the case. The Prius is good environmentally but the best diesels are only just behind environmentally and much cheaper to buy.

To the European eye the golf looks like a mid sized hatchback, rather than a small estate. Do you get citroen? The 3 door C4 might be right up your street.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 21 April 2005 20:25 (twenty years ago)

See also BMW 1 series, Audi A3 and Mercedes C-Class compact, neither of which I like but are probably decent and at the top end of your search. Seat or Skoda (both VW brands) make it to the US?

Ed (dali), Thursday, 21 April 2005 20:27 (twenty years ago)

Alfa Romeo 147?

Ed (dali), Thursday, 21 April 2005 20:28 (twenty years ago)

Yes, the compact BMW's and Mercedes are the exact shape I am looking for, but I cannot afford (mentally as well as fiscally) their brands.

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 21 April 2005 20:46 (twenty years ago)

Unsure of the price differential in the us but mid to high end golf in the UK is approx the same price of the BMW 1 and C-class compact.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 21 April 2005 20:49 (twenty years ago)

I don't think we get Citroen, but I just looked at a picture and it is too bubbly. I like boxy--no rounded edges.

I couldn't live with myself if I drove a BMW--it would be like renounding everything the 18-yr-old Mary stood for.

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 21 April 2005 20:50 (twenty years ago)

Then again, You Know Who drives a Beemer.

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 21 April 2005 20:50 (twenty years ago)

Likewise. Academically surely the C4 3 door is angular enough (5 door is rubbish).

Ed (dali), Thursday, 21 April 2005 20:51 (twenty years ago)

Which European brands do you get , anyway?

Ed (dali), Thursday, 21 April 2005 20:52 (twenty years ago)

You want a Hyundai Elantra.

http://www.autohaus.net/images/2497.jpg

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 21 April 2005 20:54 (twenty years ago)

That's not too bad Gabb.

We seem to get most of the Europeans except for the French.

We used to have a nice compact Merc circa 80s that my mom gave away a few years ago argh.

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 21 April 2005 20:57 (twenty years ago)

I think my problem is that I don't like the way new cars look.

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 21 April 2005 20:58 (twenty years ago)

Saab? Volvo?

Ed (dali), Thursday, 21 April 2005 20:59 (twenty years ago)

the car guys' Elantra review is very positive, but note the poor crash rating

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 21 April 2005 21:01 (twenty years ago)

I couldn't drive a BMW because it's all my UVA freshman roommate ever talked about--getting the Beeeeeeemer and I would think of her every time.

Old Volvos are okay but they get a little rusty when you get them old enough to look good. New Vovos are too pedestrian. My mom's friend tried to sell me a white one 10 years ago and I nipped that in the bud.

Saab too swoopy and aspirational.

Basically, I think I want an Old Jetta. Maybe they call with Jetta Classic.

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 21 April 2005 21:01 (twenty years ago)

I need an extra safe car because I am an absent-minded driver.

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 21 April 2005 21:04 (twenty years ago)

right now I would take an old volvo 850 estate. But then, estate cars suit me.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 21 April 2005 21:05 (twenty years ago)

as far as safe cars go, import yourself one renault.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 21 April 2005 21:05 (twenty years ago)

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 21 April 2005 21:06 (twenty years ago)

of course it's no good to you when you want the dents taken out but they do do best in the crash tests

Ed (dali), Thursday, 21 April 2005 21:06 (twenty years ago)

Estate cars=station wagons? Ohhh no. The reason Renault's are safe is bc they don't run long enough to leave the driveway.

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 21 April 2005 21:10 (twenty years ago)

The Volvo S40 isn't too bad. And according to their website, it has "superfly styling."

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 21 April 2005 21:12 (twenty years ago)

Ed and Mary are talking past each other here, I think. Ed -- the US has German and Scandanavian brands, and some of the Saabs in the States are just rebadged Subarus -- none of the Fiat group (except Ferrari), nothing from the VW family except Audi and VW, no Peugeot or Citroen, no Renault except that there are some Nissan models that share some Renault components, the smaller VWs, MBs, and BMWs aren't available. Given the US obsession with driving vehicles that are basically miniature big rigs, you think there'd be a lot of diesels, but diesel fuel quality and availability are much lower in the States than in Europe so no go.

Mary: there's absolutely no comparison between the quality of today's Renaults and the ones from the 70s and 80s. New French cars are better made today than most new American cars -- it's the same with the Itlians. You should also consider a used C-class Mercedes -- they're terrific cars, and much less expensive than you'd imagine.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Friday, 22 April 2005 08:55 (twenty years ago)

I saw a rover 75 in what appeared to be really good condition for 3500 quid yesterday. I guess the value of these machines is going to drop a lot. I do quite fancy one (the estate car/stn wgn version) i must admit.

Do you get the "SAABaru" in the states, then? IE the impreza wrx w/the saab-styled front end. I don't think they imported them into the uk.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 22 April 2005 09:09 (twenty years ago)

No,I'm pretty sure not. I found this picture though, of the next Saab/Subaru xover vehicle.

TOMBOT, Friday, 22 April 2005 15:07 (twenty years ago)

My mom has a Merc so that's what I drive when she let's me, but for me own car I need something more proletarian, with a dash of nice design. Something that says woman of the people, who just happens to appreciate design.

Mary (Mary), Friday, 22 April 2005 16:45 (twenty years ago)

Mary, just go get a Golf already! You'll love it!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 22 April 2005 16:47 (twenty years ago)

Okay! Do you recommend leasing or buying?

Mary (Mary), Friday, 22 April 2005 16:53 (twenty years ago)

Sorry, Tombot, but the 9-2X is a re-badged Impreza, and the 9-7X is a re-badged Chevy Blazer or some other US SUV -- and both are on sale in the States.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Friday, 22 April 2005 16:56 (twenty years ago)

I usually lease, but that's only because it's easier for me. Buying will always be cheaper in the long run.

Edmunds is a great resource for these kinds of questions:

I don't like cars but I like this one:

http://www.bestjapancar.com/NISSANS/FGFR.JPG

RJG (RJG), Monday, 25 April 2005 23:29 (twenty years ago)

if I had enough money to buy one and put an electric engine in it and park it offstreet, I may consider it, but I guess not.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 25 April 2005 23:35 (twenty years ago)

That's cute, RJG. I didn't realize you were such a Japanophile!

I've gone off VW for now. I've done my consumer research and I didn't realize that they were not the best for maintenance/repair. I am surprized bc I thought VW stood for safety and longevity and all that good stuff. The Passat did get good ratings, but fuck a Passat.

I like the Hyundai Elantra--it's a cutie. However, without an acceptable safetly rating I don't think it is the car for me. Love the colors though--it feels quite fresh.

Seems in my compact range--Toyota and Honda have the best reps, for safety and reliability. This is important bc I have no money and I would be very sad if I had a car and it broke down and I had to spend a ton of money to fix it. Of course, cars are prone to break down, but I would rather have the least prone to break down car of the bunch.

Cars are so expensive! I don't know how anyone affords one!

So I am thinking of Civic or Corolla, or Prius or Civic hybrid. Civic is the smaller one, right? I mix it up with Accord.

I'm thinking red might not be the best color to get in this instance. Red is for drawing attention to a car, but when you are driving a mainstream, run of the mill car, maybe you don't want to draw attention? Maybe a nice silver . . . .? Fade into the background . . . .

Mary (Mary), Monday, 25 April 2005 23:55 (twenty years ago)

how about a nice British Racing Green?

http://www.nw-autopage.com/lg_pics/0010241.jpg

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 00:12 (twenty years ago)

The Civic is smaller than the Prius.

I'm really not looking forward to replacing my car when it finally expires...I'd rather not deal with them at all, but that's not very realistic given where I live.

Leon Jones Reynolds (Ex Leon), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 00:22 (twenty years ago)

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 00:25 (twenty years ago)

ever since saab was bought by gm they've sucked hairy donkey balls.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 00:29 (twenty years ago)

Seriously, I had no idea how much these things cost. Of course I knew the base prices, but I didn't realize that if you didn't put all that money down, buying on the installment plan or leasing would average ~200/month on the economical side. More for a nice/r car. And that's not counting gas, repairs, insurance, tax (in VA there is a mysterious car tax wot I have heard referred to. Oh, and tickets, both of the speeding and parking nature. Then it seems by the time people pay their car off, they trade it in and buy a new one. What brave new world is this?

Hmm. I think if you subtract the amount of money you are saving in automobilism, NYC is really not that expensive to rent. A space to live, not the whole city. I guess I knew this in the abstract but I am just feeling the crushing weight of it now. Plus, I don't like to go out on the road with all of the crazies.

PS: Nicole if you have any advice for me on the librarian thread I would appreciate it. For instance, which type of vehicle best suits a woman of letters.

RJG: First a camera that can only be purchased in JP, than a similarly Nipponise car. Get with the times, dude, it all about Korean these days. Can you pass the kimchee?

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 00:31 (twenty years ago)

oh, yeah, I forgot about the camera!

I got that, in the end, from austria.

: )

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 00:35 (twenty years ago)

PS to Gabb: British racing green best suits British racing cars, not the bland, economical car of my future.

And to RJG: Perhaps you can get this J-car from Austria, too?

Do we have any Gen Y-ers here? How does they feel about the Scion.

I love the Scion Tc. It's loaded, reasonable and looks cool. Unfortunately, it's a bit too "boy" for me at this point (and maybe always would have been).

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 01:48 (twenty years ago)

two months pass...
I am about to purchase a certified pre-owned vehicle from the Honda dealership--a 4 dr Civic sedan. Do I need a moon roof, ABS breaks, etc. even if it costs about $1000 more? I like the pretty black EX with the sun roof, but it is the most $. But it only has 5,000 miles. The black LX costs less, but doesn't have the same amenities. There is a blue VP (Value Package) for the lease money, but it doesn't have anything special on it. What do I care more about--fly looks or lowest monthly payments?

Mary (Mary), Monday, 27 June 2005 20:14 (twenty years ago)

(these cars are all '04s)

Mary (Mary), Monday, 27 June 2005 20:28 (twenty years ago)

ABS is very nice to have. moonroofs are a totally unnecessary luxury obv.

oops (Oops), Monday, 27 June 2005 20:36 (twenty years ago)

You guys are so cute when you talk about cars! Even the guys become Lisa Simpsonesque.

Mary, I've had a Civic and I'd tell you to go for it, but get the moonroof, especially if you smoke cigs/jam tunes loud.

LeCoq (LeCoq), Monday, 27 June 2005 20:38 (twenty years ago)

Sun/Moonroof is pretty essetial. I skipped it on my current car and really regret it...

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 27 June 2005 20:40 (twenty years ago)

essential!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 27 June 2005 20:40 (twenty years ago)

I don't smoke. This is the silly thing, I fell in love with the most $$$ Civic. I thought I'd feel hemmed in bc my mom's car has the moonroof. But on the way home, I looked up and realized I didn't even have it open. So maybe I am just fixating on this for no reason. I really wanted the ABS but I had sort of resigned myself to going without them since most of the models didn't come with.

x-post, thanks Spencer for confirming my desires!

Mary (Mary), Monday, 27 June 2005 20:40 (twenty years ago)

How much under what they are asking should I offer? I don't know how to haggle!

Mary (Mary), Monday, 27 June 2005 20:42 (twenty years ago)

Think about the lowest amount you feel comfortable offering and then offer them $500 less than that initially. Give them an opening bid of 60% of what they're asking for and try to haggle them down to the 75-80% range.

Alternately, have a shady salesman; we had one and as a result we ended up getting a Rav 4 L model valued at $27K for the base model no-amenity price of $21K.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 27 June 2005 20:46 (twenty years ago)

Mary (Mary), Monday, 27 June 2005 20:48 (twenty years ago)

ideal ride: late 70's/early 80's vintage Toyota Celica, SOOO cool, they're like little wolverines
i don't know of any car movies

tremendoid (tremendoid), Monday, 27 June 2005 20:51 (twenty years ago)

Heh--I found out the price and it the price I wanted to pay but was embarassed to ask for bc I thought they would laugh at me. I used Edmunds to try and figure out what they payed, what private party people get payed, and what the dealers get payed--on average. They are still going to laugh at me, I know.

The dealer sold me this lovely sob story about how he bought the same car for his daughter, that's how much he believed in it, in the middle of the story his daughter changed into his niece, before he caught himself and said, I mean, my daughter.

Mary (Mary), Monday, 27 June 2005 20:51 (twenty years ago)

Basically, you need to tell them "I love the car and I am going to buy it but you have to make me happy. I am not buying the car unless you make me happy." If they are under a quota crunch (I don't know if late June would qualify as crunch time), they will consider making concessions.

Alternately, lie out of your ass and tell them you're looking at a private sale for a similar car that's 20-30% less, but stress that you really, really love their car. If you moon over it enough and convince them that you're itching to pull the trigger, they will either drop the price for you or start throwing mad free shit at you to get you to sign the papers.

Hahaha also ask him how much he would make his niecedaughter pay. And still lowball the price even if you're willing to pay it.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 27 June 2005 20:53 (twenty years ago)

(You may not want to bust him for his fake story but still hahahahaha.)

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 27 June 2005 20:55 (twenty years ago)

Also, they will try to upsell you on a bunch of BS after you've agreed to the deal - things like some special kind of wax protection etc. These things are all pure profit for the dealer. They may even make you try to sign things like "denied special wax coating protection" which is basically a scam. Just get up and say, "I'm leaving" and they'll chill out.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 27 June 2005 21:02 (twenty years ago)

Hahahaha "special wax protection"! You should demand that they shrinkwrap the car for you.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 27 June 2005 21:03 (twenty years ago)

yeah with the Honda guy it was theft protection, extended warranty and some other bullshit for at least 10 minutes(admittedly I shouldn't have asked so much for details but I was curious).

tremendoid (tremendoid), Monday, 27 June 2005 21:07 (twenty years ago)

When I got an Audi the dealer actually tried to convince me they had some coating that was better than a finish designed by German engineers in Ingolstadt. It was like $300 ("Only $5 a month for piece of mind!"). I think I said something along the lines of "the only way you're going to get that $300 from me is to hold me up at gunpoint!" When I stood up to walk out they relented but still tried to get me to sign something saying I had denied the "extra protection."

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 27 June 2005 21:13 (twenty years ago)

Was it something like 'permaplate'? 'Cause I bought my car from an Audi/VW dealer, and they tried the same thing on me.

luna (luna.c), Monday, 27 June 2005 21:15 (twenty years ago)

That's a great name, but I don't remember the exact one they used.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 27 June 2005 21:19 (twenty years ago)

What do I care more about--fly looks or lowest monthly payments?

You're doing a bit of a number on yourself here, since the implication is that anything beyond the bare necessities is a frivolous expense.

Assuming that mileage etc is equal, EX IS THE BETTER VALUE. Not only because it has things will increase your actual enjoyment (e.g., moonroof) and things that make it safer (e.g., ABS, an extra 12hp), but because it doesn't really cost $1000 more - that same stuff that you like retains its value, and will allow you to ask more for the car when you eventually sell it or trade it in, whether that's one year from now or ten.

Depending on the price your dealer's asking, you may also want to look at a new Civic EX. Yes, a NEW CIVIC EX. The Civic is due for replacemant by the end of the year, and Honda's been quietly offering its dealers some pretty nice spiffs to keep the current model moving. In the past year, I've helped two different acquiantances get fully-loaded Civic EX sedans for $16.5K with minimal negotiation.

I'd recommend going to carsdirect.com and checking out how much they sell Civics for in your area. There's no downside, and they offer live prices, which lets you just say, hey Mr. Honda Salesman, I'd like to work with you but I'm not going to pay for the privilege, here's what I can get a new Civic for, is there any point in us talking further?

rogermexico (rogermexico), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 03:13 (twenty years ago)

Thanks! And thanks to ILX for walking me through this protracted decision process. The ride home was great. Only one little problem, they told me they were gonna fill the tank for me, but it was near empty. Ordinarily I would think they forgot, but I read before I went to the dealer that there is this one little unfixable design flaw with some of the '04 Civics whereby you fill the tank and every 4th time or so it doesn't register on the needle. I am hoping they just forgot--I guess I will find out tomorrow when I drop the check off. If not, how will I ever know if I am running out of gas or not?

My first point of contact dude was really cool, like I had to ask him if I could do a test-drive, there was no pressure, but after awhile his crazy manager came out to seal the deal. At one point (after I brought in my mom) he was going on about his daughter again, and then he referred to letting the mother take of the warranty, and then he actually said, "Oh, it's my niece." Get one straight story.

After we agreed on the price, they said they were gonna send some in to talk to us about how to take care of our car while they set up the lease processing. I thought, cool, I'll get some tips. That's when the girl started going off about the paint and etc. She said, You don't want to get an alarm for the third most stolen car in America? And I was like, no, that's okay. And my mom was like, they always just go off in parking lots anyway. But I wasn't prepared for those pitches so was happy to read here not to worry about them. She was going to charge a special deal of $595 for the paint sealant/warranty.

I also drove a '02 green Corolla with 50,000 miles that was exactly like the rental car I took to North Carolina which was so so so much cheaper. But the drive was just not as nice at all. My car has only 5,000 miles on it.

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 04:15 (twenty years ago)

Oh I forgot the funniest part. he asked incredulously, you've never financed a car before? And I was like, no, I've never owned a car before. This was cause my mom was saying that maybe it would be better to use her credit. And he looked me in the eye and said, Financing a car is one of the best things that you can do in life. And without even thinking I said, I seriously doubt that. He was like, what, have you been in Europe for the past 10 years or something? I was like no in New York. he was like ok, but financing a car, buying a home, these are all the important steps that you need to make. And I am sitting there with a Hello Kitty bag in my hand. We decided to co-finance it, so I can take this brave step toward adulthood.

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 04:23 (twenty years ago)

He's actually kind of right about that. Credit bureaus like to see us take on long-term debt and repay it in a predictable fashion. It really does help with that credit rating thing.

But it is hard to recognize the odd nugget of truth under the pile of BS. Good call on the alarm, btw.

rogermexico (rogermexico), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 04:34 (twenty years ago)

Ha ha, yes, I am sure it is one of the better financial things one can for themself, but the way he presented it was if it was the best thing in life that might ever happen to me.

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 05:05 (twenty years ago)

Yup. Now that you've agreed to finance a car, it's all pretty much one long slow slide...

rogermexico (rogermexico), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 05:21 (twenty years ago)

Also, my mom pointed out that this car is made in Canada, not the Land of the Sun :(

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 05:32 (twenty years ago)

Congratulations!!!

Instead of the alarm, just get a Club (but remember to use it). Also, during cold months, you can still leave the moonroof open (even at night). Just put the heater on your feet. This is one of my favorite things.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 06:16 (twenty years ago)

A club? As in a baseball bat, or one of those weird wheel-lock contraptions? They look a bit tedious to put on?

I'm so excited. I can't believe I have a car sitting in my driveway.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 06:57 (twenty years ago)

My gas gauge is fine; they had just forgotten to put fuel in the tank. I love the way the Honda drives, it's so stiff and slow to accelerate and the engine is so noisy and revvy--it feels a lot like the compact diesel I learned to drive on. Are they all like this? Or did I buy a lemon? I guess I should have sampled some other Hondas.... My only other points of comparison were a couple of Corollas that seemed to drive much looser.

My mom used a charming & bewildering tactic as I was deept into negotiations last night. Out of the blue, she pulled this coupon out of her pocket, and said, this is for a car sale sponsored by the Apple Credit Union next weekend. Do you think we should go to this? As we were haggling over the price of the car that I pretty much intended to buy.

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 19:19 (twenty years ago)

xpost, Ed, just to calm you down: The compressor is not in use when I do this. It's just heat directly from the engine that would otherwise be vented out of the car.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 19:33 (twenty years ago)

I don't leave the windows open when I have the AC on (which is very rarely even when it's really hot - although LA heat is very dry which means the AC's cool dry air isn't as important).

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 19:38 (twenty years ago)

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 20:01 (twenty years ago)

Let's talk accessories. Do you put bumper stickers, other stickers on, or place stuffed animals, or hang things from your dash? Should I place Hyseric Glamour stickers around my car? Their H sort of matches the Honda H.

The most common ones around here are the Bush/Cheney, and the Kerry/Edawards stickers. I made my mom take hers off (K/E) her car, bc I was like, that election is over. But every one keeps them on, so maybe I should have let her keep it. And of course the ubiquitous yellow ribbon stickers. Sometimes even two or three. Gareth and I found that the more Support our Troops stickers a person has on their SUV, the less likely they are to let you merge into their lane.

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 23:23 (twenty years ago)

You have to keep the campaign stickers on your car so that people know how rude to be in traffic. (Or maybe that's just me.)

If you go with bumper stickers, go all the way and just put it on. People who scotch tape them to the rear window are lame. The bumper sticker isn't going to make your 1994 Chevy Lumina completely worthless, dude.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 23:31 (twenty years ago)

yeah GM already saw to that

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 23:34 (twenty years ago)

for those who don't have a club already, skip it and get "Autolock" which locks over the brake or clutch instead of the steering wheel(which can be easily cut, nullifying the club in seconds, the autolock(well, any security measure) can be dealt with but it's much more of a pain in the ass from what I've heard.

tremendoid (tremendoid), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 23:38 (twenty years ago)

Ha ha, I never knew anyone scotch-taped bumper stickers to their car! That would be good for me, actually, bc I am always changing my affinities.

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 23:40 (twenty years ago)

but isn't the Club way more visible than that? and the main point of any security device is to be blatant enough so any would-be thief wouldn't even bother breaking in, even if there are ways of overcoming them.

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 23:42 (twenty years ago)

You don't enjoy communing with men in the nude?

I swear that read as "commuting with men in the nude"

rogermexico (rogermexico), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 23:49 (twenty years ago)

xpost but the point is that it's not really as much of a bother to any serious car thief as previously advertised, and they know that. Plus autolock gives you big red stickers(one for EACH side window GOTCHA smartypants) that tell the bad guys in no uncertain terms that you mean business. with extreme prejudice.

tremendoid (tremendoid), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 23:58 (twenty years ago)

ah okay, visible stickers.
my point was that it needn't have to be much of a bother to be a deterrent. Locked doors aren't much of a trouble for a serious car thief either, but if he sees a car with unlocked doors he'll no doubt pick that one.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 30 June 2005 00:02 (twenty years ago)

The cars are actually perfectly cute; simple and stream-lines. But why do they attract suck agressively social-status happy drivers? MB seems to attract a more staid consumer, rich and boring; while BMW seems to be more rich, sporty, and snotty. I wonder what is it like in Europe?

I can relate to this. I would add Corvette owners to this lovely group of folks. Thankfully there aren't a lot of them.

jim wentworth (wench), Sunday, 31 July 2005 01:36 (twenty years ago)

I can understand why BMW might carry bad associations, but they are truly great cars. The suspension, transmission, and engine of 3 or 5 series are uniquely great. I would love to have a BMW simply because they are great cars. It's a little dream of mine to own a 3 series BMW if I can ever afford one.

Mercedes on the other hand seems like a silly car to me. Why not buy a Lexus or Acura and get a better car for less?

Super Cub (Debito), Sunday, 31 July 2005 02:36 (twenty years ago)

my roommate in college's sister was a professional trophy wife. she had a big ol V12 SEL, which is probably the best car I've ever ridden in. Because the Lexus doesn't have the three-pronged, Flavor Flav hood ornament.

I read that MB has screwed themselves by differentiating their brand and their price points so readily. To the effect of I think ten years ago there were 3 lines and now there are god knows how many. And the dealerships are hurting bc they have such a wide range of people with different expectations coming through their doors and they don't know how to cater to them. Plus, the product has gone down-hill. However, the 70s Mercedes has the Euopean art film cachet. Think of all the MB sedans pulling up in the Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie.

I've seen a lot of the new Jettas on the road. They are not that bad, but I wonder why they had to make the Jetta so much bigger. Maybe they will introduce a cute, pre-Jetta like car?

So I can't find anyplace else to put this -- over the weekend I went home to Carmel to visit my folks as well as my aunt and uncle, who had come out for the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, aka old fancy cars galore that sell for millions. I didn't go on Sunday to the event itself but on Thursday I found myself at a couple of side events and while I'm obviously not a car freak per se, I figured folks would like to see some of what was on offer -- Duesenbergs, Bugattis, Aston-Martins, etc. etc.. Look through my Flickr set and go nuts.

I've been to both the classic car races at Laguna Seca and the Pebble Beach Concours about a half dozen or so times over the years. (my mom hasn't missed it in 25 years) It's gotten much more expensive to go now, but I like dropping in now and then

Elvis Telecom, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 19:05 (eighteen years ago)

Um, can anyone tell me about frame damage? I took my car to Carmax and they told me it had frame damage and would therefore offer me $8500. Its blue book value is like $14,000. Before, I took it to the dealer I bought it from and he told me he would give me $8500-10,000, possibly $10,950. I had body work done after I lost control on ice (had a back door replaced) but neither the dude who fixed my car nor my insurance told me there was frame damge. There was $5,000 work done on it. What should I do? If I offer this car for a private sale, what should I divulge? I don't want to screw anyone over, but I feel like the car is worth at least $12,000, but maybe there is frame damage and it is a piece of junk? Should I just try to get as much as I can from the orginal dealer?

Virginia Plain, Thursday, 27 September 2007 21:09 (eighteen years ago)

No advice for me? I put it on Craigslist for a little under what I think it's worth--waiting to see if anything happens.

Virginia Plain, Friday, 28 September 2007 18:08 (eighteen years ago)

Can you take it back to the repair shop and say "hey, you missed the frame damage"? Do they have a frame machine that could straighten it out?

Rock Hardy, Friday, 28 September 2007 18:10 (eighteen years ago)

I just checked my report from the repair shop, and they do list "frame work" as one (of many) of the repairs. The frame is apparently fixed, but now the car is tainted and its value considerably reduced.

This is my dream 'normal' car, I think:

Can't really afford /justify one now, but in a couple of years we'd love to get one. It just seems like the perfect small car, the platonic essence of small carness. I always think when I see one "why would you want to drive anything else?" Apart from maybe, if money was even less of an object (ditto practicality):

I drove an Oldsmobile Alero (2001) for 6 years without a problem, then it just DIED. No little, fixable problem, it needed a new everything, which would have cost more than the car was worth. S/D of cars we use; my main criteria here, tbh, is the ease with which I can transport a bike in the back, which is basically what i do all day. mega bonus points for not having to take the wheel off.

Search:

* Priuses: "cool," nice control layout, surprisingly peppy, very capacious (seats fold FLAT, bike goes in whole!), MPG, good visibility when you back up and stuff, easy to estimate where the snub nose is at any given time, ditto the rear bumper: there's basically a window right there
* Honda Fits: tiny on the outside, massive on the inside. like, hueg. once again, there is a very clever folding system that allows the seats to lie totally flat on the inside. boxy shape means you can fit a ton of shit inside. guaranteed that most of my band's equipment (minus drums) could manage. sporty shifting, if you're into that.
* Toyota Matrix: like the Fit, but bigger and faster. again, seats fold flat (no wheels off) AND they are lined with plastic on the back, so you don't have to worry about fucking up the seats. beefier than the Fits

D:

* Hybrid Honda Civic. Fuck this piece of shit. Terrible pickup, long snout is hard to judge, and AND AND the lot we've got DONT LET YOU FOLD DOWN THE BACKSEAT. <---- WTF. Moreover, the trunk is fucking tiny (smaller than the standard model, don't ask me why), which means that a bike cannot fit unless I take off all the wheels. so i say fuck it, and throw the bitch in the backseat, which means you sit on bike grease when i'm done.

* Honda Element. Spacious, yeah, but only if you hang up the rear seats, which is onerous in comparison to the way cars do it, AND it obliterates most of your rear visibility. they've fallen apart more quickly than anything else, and the low end models are all kind of plasticky.

gbx, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 01:43 (seventeen years ago)

2002s are great. chris what do you think of that new BMW 1-series, it's got a major 2002 throwback thing going on.

I like the 1-series a lot. I finally got to see one last week and it's much better looking in person than the foreshortened weirdo in the photographs. The 135i basically makes the 335i (if not the entire 3-series outside of the M3) irrelevant unless you absolutely have to have four doors and if that's the case, I'd opt for a Mercedes C300 with the six-speed. The big downside is that the 1-series is still freaking expensive, especially after factoring in insurance and servicing costs. Wait a couple years and I'm sure there will be sufficient quantities of low-mileage ones sitting in the pre-owned lot.

I gotta admit though, the turbo Volvo C30 is a potentially good alternate (a Volvo!?). You're either on board with the looks or not (I like the look) but the ride is much nicer than the Mini or with a lot more usable space.

Oooh, concept.
The Furai sounds sensational at full cry. As we exited Turn 11 onto the main straight with the sound of the rotary exhaust reverberating off the concrete pit wall, the effect was not of a lone car, but instead an entire field of endurance racers. With the Furai, Mazda is suggesting that this aural deception will soon become a reality as it moves to join Acura and Porsche in an assault on the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

haitch, since the Mach 6 has never touched the asphalt of a real course, I graciously concede.

I drive past a '75 or '76 BMW 2002 every day and I swear that if it ever goes up for sale...

love those cars.

This is my car, only with four doors:

http://www.edmunds.com/media/reviews/top10/06.least.expensive.cars.to.insure/06.vw.gti.500.jpg

Pros:
- AN AWESOME CAR TO DRIVE - quick, fast, awesome handling
- Love the way it looks
- Surprisingly spacious
- Pretty good gas mileage for a sport tuned car (Over 30 on the highway)

Cons:
- Low-profile rims seem to not get along with pot holes AT ALL. I've had to replace two tires already in order to avoid potential blow-outs.
- Premium fuel be expensive, yo. This is somewhat mitigated by the good gas mileage.

I would buy it again, but might consider the not-so-low pro rims.

two months pass...

So anyway the Concours d'Elegance is just around the corner again and once again I'm going home to Carmel for a few days here -- not really for the cars but since other family always visit around that time it's good for a reunion.

And like last year, I'll take photos galore -- here's that 2007 set again. A couple of my favorites:

But what I want to know is 1) what's your ride, 2) what's your ideal ride, and 3) ...um... your favorite car movie. Yeah, that's the ticket.

1) Saab 9-3, bitches
2) 80's convertible Saab 900
3) Can't think of any

Have you seen 'Electroma'? The 400 is aka the Daft Punk car now.

Electroma is actually where I first saw and liked the car, so yeah. Unoriginal of me I guess.

Totally original! Have been trying to find this one picture I recall of a red one, shot from the rear, in front of a modern house.

Maybe it's just the adjustment, but I had to take a rental for a few days and it's a Honda Fit and so far I fucking HATE driving this thing. Weird ass hatchback rear view, strange shape, handles weird, cannot get my spatial bearings whatsoever, driver seat sits uncomfortably. I feel like this thing was just invented to convince people to pay for the more expensive rental next time. I want my bougie accord back.

Should I buy a used Honda CR-V, a used Subaru Forester, or option C ___?

C = used 1994 Volvo 240 with 250,000 miles, Vermont plates, and dancing bear bumper sticker.
