the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 12 February 2004 00:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks everyone! Due date is 08.08. Jodee went through her entire first trimester without realizing -- figured she was going through some winter illness and weight gainage.

Andy K (Andy K), Thursday, 12 February 2004 00:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh and CONGRATULATIONS Alex, just in case I didn't post on your thread. (Can't remember, etc.)

Andy K (Andy K), Thursday, 12 February 2004 00:33 (twenty-two years ago)

how many babies have been conceived on ILx now?

mullygrubber (gaz), Thursday, 12 February 2004 00:35 (twenty-two years ago)

WE DID NOT CONCEIVE ON ILX. I think it was a couch.

Andy K (Andy K), Thursday, 12 February 2004 00:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Are you sure there wasn't any ILX on that couch?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 12 February 2004 00:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Mazel Tov Andy--
And let me tell you: from the time I first saw the ultrasound to when my daughter was born I speculated endlessly about what she'd look like--given these blurry clues--and it turned out I was shockingly accurate. Did they give you one of those weird "baby's first picture" cards for the printout?

(would it be totally gay to start a baby group on ilx? seems like there are enough of us)

My mate, Dodgy Dave, can do an abortion with a few coathangers for only £30. I'm not saying that it's the way to go, mind, just looking out for my mate's back balance y'know? He's got a smack addiction to fund and anyone attacks him is attacking the working class - you know what I mean?

Nutty Nigel (Nutty Nigel), Thursday, 12 February 2004 11:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 12 February 2004 11:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Did they give you one of those weird "baby's first picture" cards for the printout?

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 14 August 2004 16:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks, everyone! Jodee IS doing well.

Hopefully this won't get too long and scrambled... Everything went according to plan until the pushing part. Four hours of pushing didn't result in much progress. Jodee was dealing with back labor and Adrian's head was stuck at an odd angle. We made the decision to have a c-section before it turned into an emergency (it was reassuring to find out later that Jodee could've pushed forever with no result... a c-section was one of her worst fears). The cut they had to make on her was longer and lower than usual. (The worst and best things I have ever witnessed happened at the same time: seeing my wife's insides splayed on her body and seeing our boy for the first time.) She lost a good deal of blood and had to have two transfusions. Thankfully she's recovering well and Adrian's in ideal health.

Photos of Adrian

(I'd post some of them here but the original source files would display and they are massively huge.)

Andy K (Andy K), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 14:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Good heavens, man, that sounds like one hell of a situation. I'm glad all is well, please give her extra good thoughts from me (who admittedly she doesn't know at all!).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 15:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't know how much word got around, but we had to go back to the hospital last week. It was pretty nerve wracking. I'm amazed that Jodee was able to keep her sense of humor at all. This is a post she typed on one of the forums she's on:

A few days after coming home from delivering my baby, I started feeling really bad pain on my right side. It got so bad that I could barely walk. My doctor advised me to go into the ER on Wednesday and I was there for 12 hours undergoing every sort of test before they decided to admit me that night. (During this time I was unable to eat or drink anything or even take pain medication.) I had to fight with the hospital to keep my baby with me so I could continue to breast-feed. Fortunately my doctor intervened and they were able to find a private room for me (on the oncology ward of all places.)

I was in the hospital for days before they finally determined that I had a large mass of fluid in my side. On Friday, I underwent a procedure which entailed them using a CT scan to measure where the mass was, and they used a large needle to drain out most of it. (During this procedure I had to remain completely still which was hard, especially when I felt that needle!) It turns out it was blood left over from C-section. It had started an internal infection and my white blood cell count was very high, as was my temperature.

They made me stay in the hospital through Sunday so I could get IV antiobiotics and monitor me until the fever broke and my white blood cell count started to improve.

I am thankfully now back at home, although I still have a cathether in my side to drain the excess blood. I hope to have that removed on Thursday. I am feeling a lot better, but I have to tell you, those five days in the hospital were pure torture. I just wanted to be back at home with my newborn, and there were so many things I went through. Ugh. Needless to say, name a body orifice, and I had something stuck there. My arms look like Courtney Love's from all the IVs and twice-daily blood tests.

Anyway, I just wanted to post as I am now mostly recuperating on the couch and not on the computer much. I hope to be back in the saddle soon.

Obviously I'll be very very happy if Jodee never again goes through something 1/100th as intense/painful/dramatic. I felt like I was losing my mind at least a couple times (felt as if my limbs were shaking uncontrollably but looked down and was awestruck to be perfectly still, etc.) I don't know how anyone can maintain their sanity while watching her/his loved one go through a more trying experience.

Adrian got us through it. I'll tell him some day about how brave and strong his mother was, and how hard she fought for him.

Andy K (Andy K), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 01:38 (twenty-one years ago)

dude, that's terrible, but I am extremely happy to hear she and you and Adrian are all well.

p.s. Adrian and His Cheeks needs to be your Moodymann-style pseudonym pronto.

p.p.s. I quoted you in the Chicago Reader!

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 02:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Word to that shit.

Andrew (enneff), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 02:18 (twenty-one years ago)

gosh, rereading that makes me worry I look like I'm making light of what happened--I'm totally not. that's some serious stuff and Jodee obviously handled it extraordinarily well, as did you. blah blah well-wishes pumping-fist-hoorays blah.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 02:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Good thoughts, MANY good thoughts for all.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 02:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Good wishes yo you and your family.

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 14:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Good wishes from me, too. I had a C-section and was in the hospital for a week, without any further complications, thank goodness. My baby's head was too big to pass through, we discovered (after 23 hours of labor). The whole experience made me thankful for modern Western medicine, because Rufus and I wouldn't have made it otherwise.

Adrian sure is a cutie.

Here's hoping Jodee heals just fine. It should get easier from here on out. Babies get easier and more fun as they grow.

Maria D. (Maria D.), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 14:44 (twenty-one years ago)

post-punk baby action!!

Best phrase ever.

gosh, rereading that makes me worry I look like I'm making light of what happened--I'm totally not. that's some serious stuff and Jodee obviously handled it extraordinarily well, as did you. blah blah well-wishes pumping-fist-hoorays blah.

No, no, any and all humor is appreciated -- with the exception of the Bush/Cheney '04 sign that my (otherwise extremely helpful and kind) sister-in-law planted on our front lawn before we returned home Sunday. I wish I had time to hatch my revenge scheme: The placement of many signs reading, "KKK rally this way --->" across a five-mile radius from her home and then placement of a sign reading, "YES, THE KKK RALLY IS RIGHT HERE IN THIS HOUSE RIGHT NOW" in her front lawn.

Matos: Apologies for not responding to your email. I haven't been able to dig through my inbox. Thanks for the quote!

And thank you, Maria D. We're loving the little one more and more with each passing minute (yes, even when he's all gaseous and grimace-faced).

We are pretty sure he will be a heartbreaker at some point.

Andy K (Andy K), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 14:06 (twenty-one years ago)

You saying he's not one now? Don't sell him short!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 14:07 (twenty-one years ago)

i'd be kinda creeped out if i found out that 15 years earlier or so my baby pictures had been photoshopped to resemble snoop dogg album covers. i suppose the ilx servers will have melted by then or something. nice baby, btw, andy.

m. (mitchlnw), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 14:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Fantastic. Looks like a cheeky little fellow (and so much like our little one in some of those too).

NickB (NickB), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 14:10 (twenty-one years ago)

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 14:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Brilliant! I like me this kid.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 14:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned, don't eat the ILE babies!

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 15:02 (twenty-one years ago)

A Modest ILEism.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 15:03 (twenty-one years ago)

EXCELLENT WORK, ANDY!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 16:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Babies are so cute. Our salesperson brings hers to work in the morning. So Thom and I are now more than ever keen to have babies of our own. Xrossing our fingers we won't have to wait long.

jesus nathalie (nathalie), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 16:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks everyone!

(My advice to you, Jesus, is to have them one at a time.)

Andy K (Andy K), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 17:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Somehow I've never seen this thread ... fantastic pictures Andy. He's a terrific baby.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 17:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Flying serene superbaby!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 17:43 (twenty-one years ago)

AIRPLANE BOY. My favoritest game ever. You have spawned a beaut sir. Good on ye.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 18:09 (twenty-one years ago)

That helicopter shirt is awesome. Our toddler would die for that shirt. We live near a small hospital and helicopters often fly over our house when patients have to be airlifted to Boston. I used to hate the sound of them, but it makes Rufus so happy that I've stopped feeling sad for the poor illin' passengers.

Maria D. (Maria D.), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 18:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Damn, that is one sharp-looking baby.

Hahaha, that IS rather like the man, is it not? Perhaps there was reincarnation.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 6 June 2005 12:14 (twenty years ago)

what a happy fellow!

teeny (teeny), Monday, 6 June 2005 13:15 (twenty years ago)

ilxors seem to produce the cutest babies

Indeed Gem!
Too cute!

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Monday, 6 June 2005 13:19 (twenty years ago)

I don't know which is best, the one where he and the cat have clearly been plotting world domination together, or the raconteurish bather. What a cool dude.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Monday, 6 June 2005 13:26 (twenty years ago)

Thanks for the kind words, everyone!

He and the cat, Milo, are best friends. Milo doesn't take any shit from anyone else when it comes to tugging on his hair or being a little aggressive. With Adrian, he'll just sit there and lap up any attention. Casper, our other cat, is protective of him but otherwise seemingly indifferent.

Andy K. (ADK), Monday, 6 June 2005 15:46 (twenty years ago)

Hehehe, what genius. :-D I like me this kid.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 6 June 2005 16:13 (twenty years ago)

Oooh I hope it's due to ILX that all these kids (Andy's, Alex',...) are so beautiful. Xrossing my fingers mine is as pretty! I love babies who laugh. I never laughed as baby apparently.
