Aja (aja), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 03:45 (twenty-two years ago)

The other Aja is named after Steely Dan.

We're friends now, but she still kinda doesn't like me. A very low level of friendship.

Dante-Cubed (Sean3), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 03:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Is this gonna be one of those threads rapidly alternates topics, like Smurfs and Tampons?

Dante-Cubed (Sean3), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 03:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Wait, who the hell are you, Dante? Graham hasn't posted on this board (at least under his own namesake for all we know) in a long time.

then who was it?

Aja (aja), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 04:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey Aja - do you think you could keep these more "one on one" conversations to AIM or email? They aren't very conducive to a public message board as this place thrives on open discussions. You seem like a cool kid, but when you get into these "one on one" talks, they really flood out any room for open discussion, alienating a lot of posters in the process.

bnw (bnw), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 04:57 (twenty-two years ago)

oops: take yr pick man!

Who said they hated Aja? I dont think anyone did, they're just fed up with the inane babble. It can have its place of course (why do you think there are 2 threads almost at 1000 posts now that us Aussies play on?) but it gets frustrating when a potentially good thread (the "Random Quotes" one was a good example) gets waylaid by 1001 (badly done) simpsons quotes or pics of Dave Grohl or like, whatever. Cant speak for anyone else but I'd have issue with that no matter who was doing it and what age they were (and I do, but when I take issue, it just involves not reading threads with those people in them, simple really).

Personally, I think its becoming increasingly obvious that a continuous flood of Calum/Aja/Oops/Kingfish/Jon Williams nonsense coupled with general aggro, confrontational mentalism and plain creepiness is driving some of the best posters, old and new, away from the boards. People who could be relied upon to deliver equally great thoughtful, weighty posts and entertaining nonsensical banter.

To be honest, if I was a newcomer to ILX and looked at a lot of what ends up all over this place on some days I'm not sure I'd bother to take a closer look. That's sad.

All the posters named above have totally different approaches to the board and totally different ways of posting, of course, but I think they're all part of the general malaise.

Andrew F OTM upthread - the best threads nowadays are the ones with specialised interest groups, I find.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 12:44 (twenty-two years ago)

It's not my fault people can't come up with a new spelling of "brane"! Although I do hear there's an alternative in this "dictionary" thing.

Is a dictionary like the Scrabble words reference book but less useful? Marvellous.

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 12:45 (twenty-two years ago)

No that's not what I meant at all, my point was that if anyone has the right, of course it's Andrew. (Aja said that he didn't have any right to talk to her like that.)

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 12:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Once you start saying "he's in charge, therefore he has the right to be as much of an arse or as much of a lovely bloke as he wants to anyone on here and if you don't like it then tough, it's his board" you're into dodgy territory - as any Graham meta-thread from a year or so ago proves.

I'm not bashing Andrew here - if anything he's been pretty restrained.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 12:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Though, yeah, on the whole I agree with Matt DC. If I came across this place now I would be seriously put off by the sheer level of noise.

Dave B (daveb), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 13:20 (twenty-two years ago)

It's just the nature of the board that anyone can say what they want. If it's too out of order it gets deleted at the victims request. That is why ppl like C-m@n exist on ILX.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 13:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Horrid generalisation but

Search: threads where most of the messages are at least three lines long.

Destroy: threads composed entirely of one line posts.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 13:28 (twenty-two years ago)

To be honest, I'm not that bothered by the senseless thread/1-line-post-marathons, but I agree with Matt and Eyeball that is becoming problematic, and scares off new/regular posters. As has been said before, this is meant to be a discussion forum for, well, everything. And while I'm at it, isn't it called I Love Everything? I get tired of so many theads/posts that start with "I hate..." Let's celebrate and debate, people! Not hate! My favourite threads are ones where we talk to each other about our backgrounds, share anecdotes, discuss politics/culture, or yeah, even disucss the day-to-day minutae of our lives. And I'm not saying is has to be a shiny-happy-love-in (debate is good), but plain hate is boring.

And regarding Aja, Andrew made the perfect suggestion - if she and Dante (or whoever) want to carry on a banal endless-one-liner-back-and-forth type of conversation that means nothing to the rest of us, then PLEASE USE AIM OR MSN MESSENGER or something like that. If you are 13/14, then I'm sure you know how to use them. That said, I think you have the right to post here (as does everyone), and that you do have interesting things to add to discussions, so don't take this as a call to leave - just remember this about posts: quality, not quantity (this goes for everyone, btw).

I kinda like the random picture threads.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 13:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I fear we may be getting into G****m / Candyman territory here. How many times do we type his name before he appears?

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 13:43 (twenty-two years ago)

i find the presence of 12-year-olds uncomfortable in any walk of life and some of the stuff that gets said here is inappropriate for a child's eyes, in my view. that said aja doesn't annoy me any more than many adult users. if she says something stupid (which she frequently does, but don't we all?) i just remember that she's a kid and cut her a bit of slack. i can think of a good number of other people here who are worse and don't have that as an excuse.

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 13:59 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm sure newbies get put off a lot less by moronic one liner post threads than a thread full of posts saying how the board sucks.

"hey newbies! this is shit! i used to like it now i hate it! come along!" nice one.

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 14:59 (twenty-two years ago)

FWIW, the reason it took me so long to post to ILE in 2001 was because so many of the threads were made up of in-jokey one-line posts.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

actually I reckon if I saw people stubbornly arguing about the board I'd be alot more attracted than by crappy one liner posts!

I remember when I first got here there were similar arguments and it just distinguished the board as different from the rest of the noise online.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 15:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean they obviously don't argue about the board without ever posting anything else on it.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 15:03 (twenty-two years ago)

''"hey newbies! this is shit! i used to like it now i hate it! come along!" nice one.''

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 15:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I imagine ILM to be full of rockists having band wars with other intense young indie-kids. I have no idea though; it's like a room in an house that I dare not go. In this case, it's because I think I might be right, in which case why bother. Alternatively, it might be the most coolest of the cool, and I'm just not cutting the cool mustard. I suspect the real reason though is that I would go to an I love Football board, I don't actually love music; it's not and never has been a sigtnificant part of my life. I know bits about it, I can have some debates about it, but I don't get music in the way that many people here seem to. But that's cool, as many don't get football like I do.

If there was somewhere called "I quite like music but I can take it or leave it and whilst having an iPod has certainly upped my liking of it, that liking is purely related to whether it sounds good and I don't do Bands or genres or any of that stuff' I would obv post to it.

ILE has suddenly become really good today - what happened?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 15:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I am avoiding work and posting lots in the reason.

Dave B (daveb), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

i've found ILM better than ILE lately

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 15:34 (twenty-two years ago)

otm, ILM is excellent lately.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 15:58 (twenty-two years ago)

maybe not excellent. very good.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 15:59 (twenty-two years ago)

When ILM is firing on all cylinders it is fanfuckingtastic even though I read more than I actually post. I sometimes wonder if the a lot of the ILM haters do much more than read the odd tedious dickwaving thread or a glance at a couple of threads on subjects they know full well they know nothing about before going "ooh, it's all scary and intimidating over there".

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 16:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Because it's fucking Asperger's Anonymous.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 16:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Apologies - gross generalisation/exaggeration. But the intense, quantitative ways so many ILM posters have when they look at music - I just can't relate to it. It turns me off and it baffles me, though it would not have baffled me at 18.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 16:17 (twenty-two years ago)

its possible that on ilm there are a lot of people happy just to throw insults about, i think, and make derogatory comments about other people, using well worn memes such as social inadequacy and references to mental problems

You know how you do something against your better judgement? I just did that by reading this thread.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 16:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Julio, I don't read it much BECAUSE every time I go there I find almost nothing I can relate to. Maybe there's a "hey, mark's left, let's party!" thing going on. Fuck it, I don't care about it so why does it rile me?

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 16:30 (twenty-two years ago)

don't worry Dan I'm sure you'll think of a dick joke to 'make things better' for all of us.

x-post

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 16:32 (twenty-two years ago)

you also posted to it Dan! gasp! what mugs we are

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 16:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Mark you sound bitter about your detachment from ILM - I can't see a need to feel that way (perhaps you aren't) really - I don't even know what sort of music you like other than B&S anyway (this occurred to me in The Harrow the other night too when we were talking about similar subject)

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 16:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm a bit bothered that everyone's piling on Aja so much and not really saying anything about Dante. Aja was a little annoying, I guess, when she pulled the "what?" shtick, but now that she's stopped that, I find her comments here and there to be mostly harmless. She manages to keep up with some of the older posters here and has even started a couple interesting threads in the process. So that's cool, even if I agree that ultimately this is maybe not the best forum for her.

But the way that Dante pursues Aja as his "girlfriend" and turns threads into creepy 13-year-old flirt chat is infinitely more disturbing and not the kinda shit I want to see on ILX.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

but did you ever stop to think that dante is a 13 year old pretending to be an adult pretending to be a 13 year old? the internet is a wacky place.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 17:09 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm liking julio more and more each day ;)

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 17:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Scott, yes, you're right. But I do like music, or rather, on my own terms, love it. But these terms are more like a cosy long-term relationship where things are ticking along nicely but without a great deal of passion.

Occasionally, I get really really into a particular band - I love The Aislers Set more than almost anyone right now, but I'm listening to a lot of stuff I used to like that fell by the wayside - the Cure, The Velvets, whatever. I also love downloading old pop hits, and reckon that close to 50% of what I listen to is soul, hip-hop or r&b (both types). I love Dolly Parton, I love The Carpenters. I sing Chicago songs at karaoke and Donna Summer songs in the bath. I am desperate to get tickets to see the Pixies this summer, but I'd be more likely to listen to Justin T when I get home.

See? The problem is I don't obsess much any more, so musical discussion with me are just a bit limp and diluted. Blame peer-to-peer - I've downloaded something like 1,500 songs by 600 different artists. I just like variety.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it is fairly obvious from just a quick search under his name that Dante-Cubed is not 13 years old. I am sure that Aja is, which is what makes it so fucking creepy.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 17:16 (twenty-two years ago)

well, that's cool, Markelby. but there IS some really cool stuff on ILM for people who are rabid about it. and even for people who aren't so rabid. sure, there is the usual nonsense, but you can find some cool funny stuff as well. and learn a lot from obsessive fans. Feel free to check out I Love Books if you want a cozier mellower experience. we have fun on there, but we are very quiet about it.Shhhhhhhh.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 17:18 (twenty-two years ago)

How is it obvious, Matt?

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 17:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought we'd proved Dante was genuinely an adolescent (14 or 15?)? I don't think ILX is a place for kids at all, but we can't stop them. Perhaps in a way Aja is safer if there are some of us looking out for her.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 17:29 (twenty-two years ago)
