Mega Man: C/D?

I recently found some Mega Man roms and rediscovered my fondness for the games. Anyone have a particular favorite? Or favorite villains/weapons?

Prude (Prude), Friday, 5 March 2004 08:14 (twenty-one years ago)

i thought this was going to be about So Solid!

mega man 1 - 4: best video games ever made
nu-school mega man: not so good

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 5 March 2004 12:35 (twenty-one years ago)

eski eyebrow

prima fassy (mwah), Friday, 5 March 2004 13:03 (twenty-one years ago)

He's known to the ladies as Rockman.

Barima (Barima), Friday, 5 March 2004 13:54 (twenty-one years ago)

MEGA MAN 2

It may well be my favorite game of all time, as well as the only Mega Man game I actually finished (and I finished it a lot). They never did make a weapon as good as the Metal Saw.

And the music!!! I can still sing every one of those tunes.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 5 March 2004 14:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually I might have beaten Mega Man X, that game was pretty decent.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 5 March 2004 14:20 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah mega man 2 is the pinnacle of video games, really.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 5 March 2004 14:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I never completed MM2. Actually, there are a lot of games Also, to this day, I think

Barima (Barima), Friday, 5 March 2004 14:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I HATE keyboards.

"Actually, there's a ton of games I never completed. The last one I was any good at was StarFox/Lylat Wars. Which I did complete actually.

"Also, I agree that MM2's music was dope. One of the tracks on MM1 or 2 sounded exactly like incidental music from MASK."

Barima (Barima), Friday, 5 March 2004 14:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Mega Man circa 2 would kick nu-Mega Man's ass. There should be a game where this occurs. (8 bit characters vs. next-gen characters FITE!)

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 5 March 2004 14:47 (twenty-one years ago)

mega man 1 is like the hardest game ever! has anyone ever actually beaten it? if so, my hat's off.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 5 March 2004 14:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yeah! I remember renting it as a kid after I had already mastered 2, so I was all "how hard can this be?". I don't even think I beat any of the stages.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 5 March 2004 14:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Some friends and I always meant to start a fusion band that only played music from Mega Man 2.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 5 March 2004 14:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I also like how the most wack weapon in the game (the BUBBLE) is the only one that can slay the last boss.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 5 March 2004 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm so glad to see there's other people that love MM2. Everything about that game is so perfect, the level design, the difficulty level, and especially the music!

Dan I. (Dan I.), Friday, 5 March 2004 15:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I had a friend in college who downloaded MIDI songfiles of two of the themes from I think MM3 - Shadow Man and another one - and remixed them with his synth gear. I wish I still had recordings of them, they were awesome.

I should try and do that myself sometime perhaps.

TOMBOT, Friday, 5 March 2004 15:16 (twenty-one years ago)

T/S: MM2 vs. Bionic Commando

I still get goosebumps from that old Capcom music. So awesome.

TOMBOT, Friday, 5 March 2004 15:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Presenting the Minibosses!

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 5 March 2004 15:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Was Bionic Commando the one with the arm?

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 5 March 2004 15:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah. You could crouch down and punch bad guys in the sack with it, too.

TOMBOT, Friday, 5 March 2004 15:31 (twenty-one years ago)

It is perhaps telling that in my adolescence I would do this repeatedly to oncoming infantrymen, when a simple rifle bullet would have expedited the affair in so many ways

TOMBOT, Friday, 5 March 2004 15:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Think I might have rented that one once.

I'm trying to think of Nintendo games that can seriously hold their own with MM2 (that don't have Mario in the title), and I'm having a hard time of it.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 5 March 2004 15:56 (twenty-one years ago)

capcom is seriously the best video game company in history

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 5 March 2004 16:06 (twenty-one years ago)

mega man, fucking bionic commando, motherfucking STRIDER (arcade AND nes versions), final fight, street fighter (natch), MERCS, shit i am sure i am forgetting like tons too.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 5 March 2004 16:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Marvel vs. Capcom (obv.), Super Puzzle Fighter 2, Legendary Wings (haha).

Strider! I forgot about that, that was a cool game. I think I could happily play just Mega Man 2 and Street Fighter 2 Turbo for the rest of my life.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 5 March 2004 16:16 (twenty-one years ago)

oh yeah, cadillacs and dinosaurs

but
anyway
KONAMI motherfuckers

prima fassy (mwah), Friday, 5 March 2004 16:28 (twenty-one years ago)

haha cadillacs and dinosaurs

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 5 March 2004 16:42 (twenty-one years ago)

remember your childhood friends!

I'm sure andrew wallace completed mega man.

cozen (Cozen), Friday, 5 March 2004 17:19 (twenty-one years ago)

if you head to ToastyFrog, you can find several articles where the guy reviews and trashes capcom for their lazy assembly line method of producing sequels to their own games.

Kingfish Cowboy (Kingfish), Friday, 5 March 2004 17:52 (twenty-one years ago)

The music for MM2 is really great. I'm particularly fond of the Flash Man stage music. The music that plays during the title screen of MM3, too.

Prude (Prude), Friday, 5 March 2004 18:15 (twenty-one years ago)

mega man 1 is like the hardest game ever! has anyone ever actually beaten it? if so, my hat's off.
-- strongo hulkington (dubplatestyl...), March 5th, 2004.

I have. With...my GAME GENIE! HAHAHAHHA, BURN U FULE!
Konami does beat Capcom anyfuckin'day though. Dude, to be able to claim Contra AND CASTLEVANIA as part of yr roster...shiiii

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Friday, 5 March 2004 20:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tournament Fighters was the best non-Street Fighter genre game on the SNES. The soundtrack rocked the fucking house. And don't forget the greatness of the Metal Gear series.

Barima (Barima), Friday, 5 March 2004 20:54 (twenty-one years ago)

if we're talking arcade games, then konami wins hands down. the first tmnt arcade game is the reason the damn things were invented.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 5 March 2004 20:58 (twenty-one years ago)

(xxxxp) Andrew thanks for that link!

Elliot (Elliot), Friday, 5 March 2004 21:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, I did play TMNT: The Arcade both in the arcade and on the NES a whole lot. It was a very soothing game to play at home.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 5 March 2004 21:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Do any of these classic game companies sell anthologies for PS2/XBox/Etc?

Stuart (Stuart), Friday, 5 March 2004 21:02 (twenty-one years ago)

the first time i saw tmnt in the arcade (before i actually got a chance to play it) i dreamt about it for two days in a row.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 5 March 2004 21:02 (twenty-one years ago)

then there was a tiny picture of the nes port in nintendo power a month or two later and i just stared at it for hours.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 5 March 2004 21:03 (twenty-one years ago)

That's beautiful, Jess.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 5 March 2004 21:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I remember hearing about some collection of a ton of Mega Man games that was going to come out for the Gamecube, did that ever happen?

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 5 March 2004 21:08 (twenty-one years ago)

There are a ton of roms here, along with an NES emulator that's quite good, if small.

Prude (Prude), Friday, 5 March 2004 22:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Or, hm, no... None of them seem to work. Try here.

Prude (Prude), Friday, 5 March 2004 22:49 (twenty-one years ago)

obviously i was a shut-in as a child too.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 5 March 2004 23:49 (twenty-one years ago)

"It was a very soothing game to play at home."

sooo true. makes up for the first nes one being so nauseatingly distressing. even the sprites were like overdetailed and writhing and strained

prima fassy (mwah), Saturday, 6 March 2004 00:23 (twenty-one years ago)

konami: blades of steel, track and field (bbbbbb my thumbs hurt to remember) double dribble, gradius >>> life force salmander!!, metal gear (no one has clocked this! or even vaguely understood what was going on), rush n'attack (worst pun ever), contra >>> probotector (uk gets robots! HA HA HOW U LIKE US NOW)

prima fassy (mwah), Saturday, 6 March 2004 00:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Konami's 4-player beat-em-up legacy was pure gold. TMNT, Crime Fighters and its pseudo-sequel Vendetta (kick villainous punk rockers in the balls with accompanying metallic "PING!" sfx), X-Men ("go and rescue Kitty from the cave!"), and the fucking SIMPSONS ARCADE GAME where Marge beats people up with a vacuum cleaner.

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Saturday, 6 March 2004 00:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh lord, the Simpsons arcade game is such a classic...

Prude (Prude), Saturday, 6 March 2004 00:41 (twenty-one years ago)

castlevania: dracula's head being able to fly after death was somewhat... innovative. castlevania 2 was a very elegant game.

did konami make bart simpson vs the space mutants? i dont think they did, but some ppl were extremely densely baffled by that game i remember. just fuck purple shit up!

prima fassy (mwah), Saturday, 6 March 2004 00:42 (twenty-one years ago)

ooh ooh super ghouls and goblins was capcom right?

and coming back on topic:

HERE COMES THE GUTS MAN

prima_fassy (mwah), Saturday, 6 March 2004 00:46 (twenty-one years ago)

the elephant in the room is nintendo itself of course

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 6 March 2004 00:48 (twenty-one years ago)

mmm yes

mega man himself had just the nicest heaviest jump

prima fassy (mwah), Saturday, 6 March 2004 00:49 (twenty-one years ago)

ghosts and goblins was harder than both ninja turtles and mega man 1.

scissors (Honda), Saturday, 6 March 2004 00:54 (twenty-one years ago)

NOTHING is harder than that first awful tmnt game

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 6 March 2004 01:07 (twenty-one years ago)

let me break down to you how hard tmnt was. the only way i clocked it (yes) was going in and out of a certain warehouse on that penultimate dark spotlight level where u fight like a 12 foot terrordrome (after EVENTUALLY FINDING THE FUCKING THING) and getting each turtle 100 of those sonic boom things. shit took me at least an hour. then once u got into the last impossible pitiless bastard stage u would crawl along with tears in yr fucking eyes killing each turtle until they had a half a bar left then switching to the next one and if u got amazing u would have one alive enough to fight shredder at the end. and this is is all having spent an hour cheating by getting them all 100 sonic woosh mega blast things. in short, honda, you are thinking of the gameboy version or something.

prima fassy (mwah), Saturday, 6 March 2004 01:18 (twenty-one years ago)

... however none of this compares to the profound abyssal pointlessness of fighting mike tyson in punch out

prima fassy (mwah), Saturday, 6 March 2004 01:21 (twenty-one years ago)

the first tmnt arcade game is the reason the damn things were invented.

jess I love you.

cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 6 March 2004 01:26 (twenty-one years ago)

PRIMA I LOVE YOU!

cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 6 March 2004 01:26 (twenty-one years ago)

honda, you are thinking of the gameboy version or something

no, no, i actually made it to the end of that fucking TMNT game, with my last turtle, last two slivers of life, dead last boss and all.... only to DIE because the "interlude" motions of the ending made my turtle walk into one last fleeting bullet and *game over*. anyway......

scissors (Honda), Saturday, 6 March 2004 01:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm welling up just thinking about that game.

cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 6 March 2004 01:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey, remember Pong?

maypang (maypang), Saturday, 6 March 2004 01:30 (twenty-one years ago)

haha i know i am getting old because i am STILL nostalgic for that tmnt game even though it sucks ("underwater bomb defusing!? wtf?!")

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 6 March 2004 01:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm thinking all these games should be remade for Xbox or PS2.. in 3D!

maypang (maypang), Saturday, 6 March 2004 01:34 (twenty-one years ago)

dude, I swapped my nes fr a gameboy. 'oh yeah capcom do me do me!' yeah right. konami wins fr iss alone but then capcom wins as well fr street fighter two (well, turbo) (haha £60 pounds 'yeah gimme! mmm pre-order') alone which is obviously the SONIC YOUTH of games. yeah I said it.

x-post.

1d.

cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 6 March 2004 01:36 (twenty-one years ago)

"fuck off m. bison."

cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 6 March 2004 01:37 (twenty-one years ago)

"dead last boss"! it was SHREDDER okay!! aka oroku saki OKAYYY!! haha jeez man u musta thought we were talking about some corny video game

; )

sigh this week i "happened to buy" mcdonaldland and barbie for nes on ebay

prima fassy (mwah), Saturday, 6 March 2004 01:37 (twenty-one years ago)

haha electrified seaweed wtf

prima_fassy (mwah), Saturday, 6 March 2004 01:38 (twenty-one years ago)

haha even as a 12 year old i knew that was some corny shit

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 6 March 2004 01:40 (twenty-one years ago)

the feeling of joy i felt with my four brothers i would never see again when we finally beat the tmnt arcade game will never be repeated in my life, i think.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 6 March 2004 01:41 (twenty-one years ago)

haha they remade it as simpsons! swing that hoover.

cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 6 March 2004 01:42 (twenty-one years ago)

haha yeah i never beat that one though

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 6 March 2004 01:43 (twenty-one years ago)

gentlemen i leave you tonight with the most beautiful heartstunning poem lack of punctuation ever gave the world:

prima fassy (mwah), Saturday, 6 March 2004 01:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I remember how to cry.

cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 6 March 2004 01:55 (twenty-one years ago)

why was i programmed to feel emotion?

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 6 March 2004 01:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I remember a temperamental NES freezing at the least opportune times.

There is a reason to cry... when your NES just chokes and freezes you moments away from delivering the last blow to the boss.

martin m. (mushrush), Saturday, 6 March 2004 01:58 (twenty-one years ago)

the trick of course is to blow into the cartridge and shake it

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 6 March 2004 01:59 (twenty-one years ago)

"Here.. gimme that!"

*friend tries blowing and shaking to no avail*

maypang (maypang), Saturday, 6 March 2004 02:01 (twenty-one years ago)

"it wasn't me....it was the CONTROLLER!!"

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 6 March 2004 02:01 (twenty-one years ago)

If blowing into the cartridge doesn't work, you have to blow into the slot on the NES as well.

Take out the cartridge and re-seating it in the NES has also been known to work.

martin m. (mushrush), Saturday, 6 March 2004 02:03 (twenty-one years ago)

haha best controller story I have: my friend ('flakey'! yeah) was playing goldeneye deathmatch against 'mini-martin' and martin kept beating him. flakey flipped, told martin to fuck off or he was going to stab him and then pulled martin's controller out and proceeded to play through the rest of the deathmatch ritually killing the static sean bean!

cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 6 March 2004 02:03 (twenty-one years ago)

shake it like an Excitebike cartridge

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Saturday, 6 March 2004 02:03 (twenty-one years ago)

goddamn was Excitebike THE KING OF KINGS. "I... I can create my own tracks?!?!"

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Saturday, 6 March 2004 02:04 (twenty-one years ago)

you always knew who the fuckers were in the neighborhood when they trotted out the controller story

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 6 March 2004 02:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Excitebike was harder than fuck though.

maypang (maypang), Saturday, 6 March 2004 02:05 (twenty-one years ago)

"that controller... weighs more."

cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 6 March 2004 02:06 (twenty-one years ago)

it was even worse when nintendo power added their "control response" or whatever to the reviews basically rating how well the game responded to user input so the nerdier whiners could actually trot out the "oh it only got a 5.5 in control and handling!" fuck off and die you homos.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 6 March 2004 02:06 (twenty-one years ago)

and thats when u slip on the power glove

prima fassy (mwah), Saturday, 6 March 2004 02:11 (twenty-one years ago)

much like pornography, i only read nintendo power for the pictures

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 6 March 2004 02:13 (twenty-one years ago)

also, due to some batshit subscription error i was getting it way into college

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 6 March 2004 02:14 (twenty-one years ago)

i bet there's still a whole box of them in the attic somewhere

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 6 March 2004 02:14 (twenty-one years ago)

"error"

maypang (maypang), Saturday, 6 March 2004 02:15 (twenty-one years ago)

ok er

i used to play gyromite without the robot.

that's my controller tale

prima fassy (mwah), Saturday, 6 March 2004 02:25 (twenty-one years ago)

flakey would kick your face off.

cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 6 March 2004 02:27 (twenty-one years ago)

do we want to know how he got the name or not?

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 6 March 2004 02:28 (twenty-one years ago)

my mum ('it's a small world') told me she barred him from the arcade she worked at (we call them 'the puggies' in scotland, jess) fr beating up the machines when he lost.

when he ws on acid once he thought a bin bag was the alien from alien.

cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 6 March 2004 02:30 (twenty-one years ago)

flakey's pulled out everybody's keyboards.

cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 6 March 2004 02:43 (twenty-one years ago)

i just downloaded a crack of mega man 2, but playing it with a keyboard is a bit like trying to knit with a ballpoint pen and a toothpick

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 6 March 2004 02:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I know, it's really counter-intuitive, with the direction pad on the right and the fire and jump buttons on the left. But you get used to it.

Prude (Prude), Saturday, 6 March 2004 02:47 (twenty-one years ago)

omg your mum worked at an arcade! i'm envious

that all reminds me why i sorta want to like that ze band michael dracula cos at school there was this kid in the year below with terrible eczema, and we didnt know his name so me and my click we decided to call him 'michael flake'

(don't worry tho, we would never have said it to him. no one knew who we were either really)

Jess OTM about MM1, that shit was hard and I never beat it. MM2 was a cakewalk in comparison, even if you didn't go with the easy option. I beat that one dozens of times.

Well, I understand why this one got canceled.

I'm pretty sure I beat Megaman 1, and I know I've beaten 2 and 3. Plus the first two for Gameboy and Megaman X and Megaman X2. Are there any good current-gen or otherwise recent Megaman games? Seems like it shouldn't be too hard to just do a Wii-style version of 2d Megaman with 3d graphics and make it look way good.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Tuesday, 9 April 2013 19:40 (twelve years ago)

Are there any good current-gen or otherwise recent Megaman games?

yes. they are amazing, but very hard.

polyphonic, Tuesday, 9 April 2013 19:47 (twelve years ago)

I'm talking about Mega Man 9 and 10 fwiw

polyphonic, Tuesday, 9 April 2013 19:49 (twelve years ago)

There's a PSP remake of Mega Man 1 that looks good, but I'm not buying a flop handheld to play it. There are also lots of tribute games of varying quality, including the upcoming Shovel Knight:
