South London FAP - March 20 / night of musical madness

OK, I rarely start threads (let alone suggest FAPs) but I think this is worth it, even for all the North London types (myself included). And yes, this is keeping in line with our apparent 1.5 FAPs per week quota in London...

Saturday March 20th - The People's Republic of Disco 2nd Anniversary Party at The Windmill in Brixton.

I've been to previous events and it's crazy fun. The deal is simple: the DJs don't bring any music. You are encouraged to bring along 2 songs you love (on vinyl or CD), they check them in to the 'vinyl cloakroom' an assign them numbers. Numbers are passed around and randomly picked, and that's what they play all night. Naturally this can lead to much musical strangeness, but the crowd tends to bring pretty fun stuff. If a bunch of us go down, well, you can guess the rest...

I'm going for sure. It's free. Open late. Cheap drinks. Good times. Who's with me?

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 18:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Me no good at HTML

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 18:45 (twenty-two years ago)

(OK, closing tags now. How embarrassing.)

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 18:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Ahem. Any-hoo, there's more info here:

http://www.peoplesrepublicofdis.co.uk

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 18:51 (twenty-two years ago)

If ever an event had ILE written all over it, it is this one. And its called THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF DISCO!

I will be there for that reason alone.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 22:50 (twenty-two years ago)

The big question (which may cause a meltdown for us ILM types):

WHAT TWO SONGS TO BRING?

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 23:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I should point out that it has nothing to do with actual disco music (for those of you who fear the disco).

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 23:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I love the idea of PROD, and i've always been tempted to start an oxford branch, but i'm just too lazy/scared of what the stewdents would bring in.

jellybean (jellybean), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 23:18 (twenty-two years ago)

ooh and I just realised I'll be in Brixton that night (watching Kraftwerk!), might have to try and persuade my friends to come along to this.

jellybean (jellybean), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 23:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Are you going to the early set or the late one? PROD will be jammed later, so I'm thinking of getting to the Windmill early. Could be a fun warm-up for the late-show Kraftwerkers...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 23:43 (twenty-two years ago)

INDEED

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 23:46 (twenty-two years ago)

and jellybean if you want to meet up at the gig then we could do that

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 23:46 (twenty-two years ago)

early one i think. I don't quite know what's happening yet. A friend bought the tickets, he still has them, and I guess I'm going with the whole group of them

but the windmill will be so much fun. it's my favourite pub out of (*counts on finger*) the 4 or 5 i've been to in London. It's even got a couple of dogs who have spent their entire lives on the roof.

jellybean (jellybean), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 23:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude! How much more fun could this be? But also, when a song sucks, you can look for the person who seems really shifty and point and laugh at them. Robster & I probably in London that weekend..? Although this does involve going South Of The River, egad.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 11:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Bah - South Of The River is fun. I used to live near the Windmill in Brixton for a while, and it was great. I'm actually thinking of moving back "south" again this summer. The horror!

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 11:23 (twenty-two years ago)

It's in Brixton anyway, you North London types can get the Vic line and you won't see the river and can pretend you never crossed it.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 11:27 (twenty-two years ago)

A warning - The Windmill is a bit of a dive, but it's a good crowd. Yeah, spotting who picked what song is fun - the selectors usually attack the dancefloor with a passion, even if no-one else agrees!

Hmmmmm - should we post the songs we are brigning to avoid duplication, or leave it a secret until the night?

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 11:29 (twenty-two years ago)

mock-horror "oh no" talk about crossing river is lame

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 11:29 (twenty-two years ago)

You say it's mock horror, Gareth, but my SISTER lives near Stockwell. If you'd met her. you'd understand.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 11:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Arrgh punctuation error. Delete Liz :x

Liz :x (Liz :x), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 11:36 (twenty-two years ago)

And I'm just talking shit. Being a foreigner, all this "north/south of the river" business really means nothing to me...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 11:37 (twenty-two years ago)

what time does PROD go on til? i can't believe you can't get a Thameslink train from Herne Hill back to King's Cross at 2-4am. this is a stupid country.

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 11:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I will probably come to this, but if my current state of song-earworm persists the only songs I will be bringing are CANDLE IN THE C#NTING WIND and CHINA IN YOUR C#NTING HAND C#NT.

Or "Live and Let Die".

We should ALL bring "Live and Let Die".

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 11:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I cannot believe Stevem is dissing the nightbus as the only appropriate form of late night travel.

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 11:44 (twenty-two years ago)

night bus from Brixton to Harringey = VOYAGE OF DOOM

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 11:57 (twenty-two years ago)

It goes until 2am, or a little later if it's really rockin'. They serve adult beverages until 2am.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 11:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Hurrah for adult beverages, although I suspect this means that cocktails will be presented with a mini dildo stirstick.

Get away with your voyage of doom, Stevem. Voyage of DISCOVERY.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 12:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I like this and shall be there too. We should co-ordinate it and dominate the playlist, and regulars can go 'why so twee' and we can snigger and then leave like strange urban guerillas or the littlest hobo.

Dave B (daveb), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 12:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Free beer for whoever can get We Want Fun on the playlist.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 12:10 (twenty-two years ago)

We Want Fun and Live And Let Die it is, everyone!

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 12:13 (twenty-two years ago)

ALL YOUR PLAYLIST BELONG TO US

Dave B (daveb), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 12:36 (twenty-two years ago)

i figure it will be absolutely packed and many won't get their tracks actually played, but still worth a punt

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 12:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I have done the infinitely trickier Herne Hill to Crouch End nightbus journey in less than an hour before. Piece'o'piss.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 13:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Why do I think I'm *doing* something on the 20th? there's nothing in my diary. OH GOD WHERE IS MY BRANE!!! What could I possibly be doing? maybe going to this. So long as I can bring my Bubblegum album. Ha-ha. I heart the Windmill.

The River Kate (kate), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 15:58 (twenty-two years ago)

This is a bit like karaoke but without the fun of singing it yourself.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 16:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Do you hate not having fun, Mark?

Liz :x (Liz :x), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 16:47 (twenty-two years ago)

naturally i am pondering what shoddy bootlegs i can churn out by the 20th just for this occasion...

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh but Mark you CAN sing the songs yourself if you like. You'll just have to sing VERY LOUDLY to be heard over the soundsystem...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 16:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Steve: do you love horses? Are they your friends?

(bootleg THAT with andrew wk!!)

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

you know what you have to do Stevem!

I won't make tit though unfortunately, I'm not allowed out before the sten night now

chris (chris), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 17:05 (twenty-two years ago)

d'oh, I won't make arse either

chris (chris), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 17:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Ahahaha bounce. Next on the hectic London ILXoR social calendar, as Rob noted on Mark's birthday FAP thread.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 09:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I will have to trawl through my ill-advised collection of 90s CD singles for this.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 10:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I haven't thought about my songs yet. So many options...
It's going to be a packed, sweaty, crazy night of random musical oddities. Yee-ha!

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 10:02 (twenty-one years ago)

your ill-advised 90s CD singles intrigue me...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 10:03 (twenty-one years ago)

You'll see. Mwahahahaha.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 10:04 (twenty-one years ago)

do they let you in if you don't bring any records?

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 10:13 (twenty-one years ago)

No. You are forced to manually turn the actual windmill by the pub which powers the soundsystem.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 10:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Roll call....who's planning on ganning?

Dave B (daveb), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 10:51 (twenty-one years ago)

i will def be there, in my dogtrack suit

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 10:54 (twenty-one years ago)

You are wearing that red and black suit to Kraftwerk?! You rule, Stevem.

I will be there if Mr Boyle is as it means we can cab it back and avoid ludicrous nightbus journey home.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 11:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Yay! Mentalism ensues...

Dave B (daveb), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 11:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Aaaargh Brixton of course Robster & I will be there.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 11:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Oi are being up for this, I think. What time should we be getting there or are we pre-boozing first else where and then making our way EN MASSE as it were?

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 11:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd say get there early since it is usually packed, and this is their 2nd anniversary. Maybe 8pm?

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 11:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh god, I swore this morning through my blinding headache that I was never going to another FAP again, But I *HAVE* to go to this! I wanna inflict my bubblegum upon the masses!!

The River Kate (kate), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 11:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Aw man, it looks like they are planning a boat party for the summer, that looks [youth]WIKKED!!![/youth]

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 11:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Boat parties rock and rule. Been on a few on the Looncaster canal which were always much fun.

Dave B (daveb), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 11:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Just checked their playlist page (http://www.peoplesrepublicofdis.co.uk/playlists.html) from the last event. Mad props to the person who brought the Dream Warriors' "Wash Your Face In My Sink"!

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 11:37 (twenty-one years ago)

oh crapola, i'm going to some sort of acoustical gig in (very) EAST london (it's essex and it knows it is) on saturday, so no PROD for me :(

it is the best idea ever however, and i await the Reporting Back with baited breath...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 11:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh my god, if someone brings F-oldin Money this time round I will die of happiness.

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 11:47 (twenty-one years ago)

i might be going! i'll see if i can convince my girlfriend (and our hosts).
i'm in london this weekend: djing on the 19th at the Artbar at the royal college of art.

joan vich (joan vich), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 11:54 (twenty-one years ago)

i might have to bring some Billy Ocean

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 11:55 (twenty-one years ago)

*crosses Billy Ocean off the shortlist*

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 12:04 (twenty-one years ago)

i might have to bring some Billy Ocean

This is so very wrong. Who are these demons who compel you? We shall slay them, and then the words 'have to bring some Billy Ocean' can be forever vanquished.

Dave B (daveb), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 12:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I may have to dig out a brother beyond single or two (not that I'm sur ethat I'm going, in fact probably not)

chris (chris), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 12:12 (twenty-one years ago)

i might come. i've had plans to go out on a 'girls night out' for like 2 months (stupid that it takes us that long to find a weekend where we're all available).

i don't think this is their scene at all, but who knows? maybe i can trick them into going.

can both my tracks be huey lewis?

colette (a2lette), Thursday, 18 March 2004 16:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Are we going to meet at the Windmill or will people be in a pub somewhere first? Rob, your people need you...

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 18 March 2004 16:49 (twenty-one years ago)

i am mightily tempted to bring John B's 'RINSE IT OUT PROPER' now - possibly the best bassline ever, it would doubtless clear the floor though, if the floor could be cleared. i guess an obvious bootleg like that Shakira/Britney/BeeGees one would go down well...

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 18 March 2004 16:55 (twenty-one years ago)

ken reads as liz typed...

Hurrah for adult beverages, although I suspect this means that cocktails will be presented with a mini dildo stirstick.
Get away with your voyage of doom, Stevem. Voyage of DISCOVERY.
-- Liz :x (lizd4ply...), March 10th, 2004.

ken thinks of the times when liz whinged on night bus journeys home...........

ken runs away

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 18 March 2004 16:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Whinging is one of my best hobbies.

Organised funsters! Where are we meeting and when?

Liz :x (Liz :x), Thursday, 18 March 2004 16:59 (twenty-one years ago)

are people allowed to bring songs by their own bands? etc.

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 18 March 2004 17:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Matt- I suggest we meet in Blackheath.

Alternative - Might go Birthday pub recce instead in afternoon. Prolly wise to check it out...

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 18 March 2004 17:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Come on, come on! We haven't got all day here, someone steer effectively.

Bah Blackheath grump.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Friday, 19 March 2004 11:11 (twenty-one years ago)

i think someone that knows brixton should set a time and place to meet. although didn't rob suggest somewhere on this thread that people go to the windmill at 8? sounds like a plan to me...

still not sure if i'll be able to convince my non-internet not-very-interested in music/dirty clubs/south london friends to come.

colette (a2lette), Friday, 19 March 2004 11:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Bwa-haha - most exclusive FAP ever! Princess of Wales from 7.30ish?

Unless there is a rugby match tomorrow in which case forget the whole thing.

(Xpost - actually, if we're going to the Windmill that early than we might as well go straight there)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 19 March 2004 11:19 (twenty-one years ago)

i'll probably be texting you guys later in the night to see if we(i)'ll be able to get in if we don't get there as early as the rest of you nuts...

colette (a2lette), Friday, 19 March 2004 11:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not sure this can be THAT late a one as the following day I have to show my mother how much I love her by going to her house and getting her to cook Sunday dinner for me.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 19 March 2004 11:36 (twenty-one years ago)

is there somewhere to go after the windmill for an all-nighter?? it's SUNDAY the next day you know - no work!

ken c (ken c), Friday, 19 March 2004 11:44 (twenty-one years ago)

(in fact i have the whole of next week to recover also since i have day off :D )

ken c (ken c), Friday, 19 March 2004 11:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Windmill from 8 it is then. Cracking.

Sunday dinner is a renowned hangover cure, as is the benevolent love of a dinner-cooking mother. I wist I were in Wales more oft so that mine own dear parent could demonstrate her love for me in this manner. As it is I may have to cook my own sausages.

Ken, you are a jammy get, as I have said before and will no doubt again.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Friday, 19 March 2004 12:07 (twenty-one years ago)

let robster provide the sausages

is markelby coming out? maybe sgs will provide the sausages.

ken c (ken c), Friday, 19 March 2004 12:19 (twenty-one years ago)

just texted rob to confirm this is the plan for you guys-- he said he's planning on getting there at 8 in order to get seats (!?) and thinks that it will be full after 9.

just so you know.

and drunken sausage eating is a bad idea. i had a feast of veggie sausages after wine and before tequila a few weekends ago, and it was really not a good thing.

colette (a2lette), Friday, 19 March 2004 12:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I am confused. Where is this FAP? if it is in eg Brixton then naturally I will be absent. But. Otherwise - ??

the bellefox, Friday, 19 March 2004 14:33 (twenty-one years ago)

It is in Brixton. There were vague plans afoot for a Blackheath micro-FAP first but that might be stretching things a little.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 19 March 2004 14:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Matt - the micro-FAP could be 'meet in Railway' for swifty before gettimng train to London Bridge.

We must sort this before 5pm tonight. Email me you number in case not.

Dave B (daveb), Friday, 19 March 2004 15:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Meet in the Crown at 6.00-6.30, then? That goes for the PF and anyone else likely to be in the area if you fancy it. Sorry, I try to avoid the Railway if at all possible especially on Saturdays.

Dave, I've got your number from a couple of weeks ago I think... I'll text you just in case.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 19 March 2004 15:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Sounds groovier than the PROD itself.

Dave B (daveb), Friday, 19 March 2004 15:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I might pop by for the microfap.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Friday, 19 March 2004 15:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Ooh I could hop along.

hopalong (starry), Friday, 19 March 2004 15:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Right then, the Crown from 6.00-7.00 from whence we shall trek off to Brixton. That's the one just at the end of the village facing onto the heath as I'm sure you all know.

Starry, you're welcome to come along but I should point out that going from Peckham to Blackheath and then back to Brixton is a long way to go for an hour-long meetup when the main event is going to be pretty close to you anyway.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 19 March 2004 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Well yeah but I thought I might be in Green-witch and therefore oot and aboot anyways. Thank you for pointing it out though, I am pleased you take concern in my travel well-being.

Sarah (starry), Friday, 19 March 2004 16:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Aah, if you're in Greenwich its a piece of piss then.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 19 March 2004 16:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Remember Sarah, leaves of three let it be, leaves of four eat some more

stevem (blueski), Friday, 19 March 2004 17:11 (twenty-one years ago)

God, I hate South London. So I do have to admit that the caffs are cheaper. Can't believe I have to go there SEVERAL TIMES A WEEK and I have to go there on Saturday night as well... we shall see if I've recovered from my brush with a dayjob yet...

The River Kate (kate), Friday, 19 March 2004 18:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Howdy all. Sorry - been absent the last couple of days at a conference (yuck).

Getting there at 8pm is definitely keen (it opens at 8), but a good idea since:
(A) The first 100 people in get some sort of present (?)
(B) It gets so crazy packed in there having a table would be a welcome luxury. In my previous trips there I've always coveted the (limited) seated areas being horded by early-bird jerks. I very much want to be one of these early-bird jerks.
(C) =Maximum chance of hearing my songs
(D) =Maximum time for BOOOOOOZING

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Friday, 19 March 2004 21:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm strangely tempted to bring along "Friends in Low Places" by Garth Brooks as one of my songs. But I'm also leaning towards some Loverboy...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Friday, 19 March 2004 21:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not going to be able to make it. :( I foolishly agreed to meet up with my sister, where I'll end up in some shitty bar playing Justin Trousersnake and Destiny's Child (like what happened last summer in Hong Kong). I'd love to know what you took along though.

jellybean (jellybean), Saturday, 20 March 2004 01:19 (twenty-one years ago)

i bet someone would bring justin trousersnake and destiny's child

ken c (ken c), Saturday, 20 March 2004 12:23 (twenty-one years ago)

aren't those your first two choices, ken?

still haven't decided what to bring. i doubt anyone else will check the thread now, so i guess i'll see y'all later...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Saturday, 20 March 2004 14:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Fuckity how did I miss this thread? PROD sounds like a bloody brilliant idea which I wish I'd thought of. Might do something similar with demos at my (apparently still fictional) club night tho.

Might come to this, although I've already bought tickets to see 21 Grams in Whitechapel - if I get there about 11.30 i simply won't get in, right?

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Saturday, 20 March 2004 15:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Sigh. We won't be coming. I asked HSA to dance at the disco. BUT HE SAID NO!!! Bastard.

It's OK, though. We found a broken guitar in a skip in Covent Garden, how rock n roll is that?

The River Kate (kate), Saturday, 20 March 2004 18:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey -- the MicroFap is going on NOW!!!!

Sorry I am not in attendance.

But to be honest, an hour-long FAP sounds somewhat insubstantial.

the bluefox, Saturday, 20 March 2004 18:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Yay! OK, my night just got so much better. HSA has just gone off to get another bottle of wine. He says that if I dress up like Mary Woronov in Rock N Roll High School, then he'll put on his old school tie and let me bend him over the desk and cane him! Hooray!

I love my life.

The River Kate (kate), Saturday, 20 March 2004 19:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Internet pervs in sharing sexlife details online non-shocker.

Barima (Barima), Saturday, 20 March 2004 20:02 (twenty-one years ago)

home before 4am!!!!!

ken c (ken c), Sunday, 21 March 2004 03:45 (twenty-one years ago)

erm.. why am i on the internet?!!?!

night xx

ken c (ken c), Sunday, 21 March 2004 03:45 (twenty-one years ago)

WE BUILT THIS CITY ON ROCK AND ROLL!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 21 March 2004 11:21 (twenty-one years ago)

oh dear...

good night then?

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Sunday, 21 March 2004 12:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I've got splinters. Where are there bits of broken cane all over the bedroom?

The River Kate (kate), Sunday, 21 March 2004 12:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, not only was I LATE for a FAP that I suggested, I also LEFT EARLY. Although not by choice - my friend from Toronto was feeling ill (not helped by jet-lag) and I had to take her home. Oh well.

And I STILL have a headache! I can't imagine the pain I would be in had I stayed on until the end.

At least they played both my songs (We Built This City and Ca Plane Pour Moi). Yee-ha!

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Sunday, 21 March 2004 13:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I still haven't heard from my other friends who decided to stay (including my friend Frank, also just in town from Toronto and didn't know anyone!).

I want some stories! Did the evening go beyond the hallowed halls of the Windmill? Jesus I wish I could have stayed on...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Sunday, 21 March 2004 13:36 (twenty-one years ago)

glad i didn't drag my friends down there, if people were skipping out.

instead, we drank loads of cava, ate yummy veggie chinese meal, stole glasses from a birthday party at a bar, and heard saucy gossip about me.

woo.

and i got a free dior lipgloss that is so pretty!

colette (a2lette), Sunday, 21 March 2004 13:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Aside from Rob and StevieT, no one really skipped out early. Actually, it only properly got going after eleven once Kraftwerk kicked out and Steve, Cis, Tracer and Emma turned up. But it ruled otherwise, music was surprisingly good aside from one HORRIBLE farty remix of Gay Bar.

Did I really hold my left fist aloft during that Starship song? Argh. It was full of dirty trusties and now I'm worried they confused me for One Of Them.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 21 March 2004 14:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Also for about 20 minutes ILE dominated the disco. It ruled. Almost as much as Dave B rules for coming up with The Greatest Getting To The Bar Quickly Tactic In All History.

Whoever gave me a Budweiser bottle full of water probably saved my life last night. Also Stevem's red and black Kraftwerk suit = grebtest thing ever.

The MicroFAP pub was full of egg-chasers ignoring the football and was therefore rubbish.

Rob you should bring your Canadian friends to Club Freakytrigger on Wednesday.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 21 March 2004 14:11 (twenty-one years ago)

SteveM, you wore a red and black Kraftwerk outfit? oh dear. I spent the time waiting for my friends outside the Brixton Academy, counting how many people were wearing that outfit. It was slightly scary, especially as most of them were men who were old enough to know better(ie older than 35). There's something about Kraftwerk fans and red tops (2 of my friends at the gig were wearing red t-shirts).

jellybean (jellybean), Sunday, 21 March 2004 14:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Matt did indeed hold his hand in the air. Lots of Urban75 people there, who have been discussing the event on their messageboard. I remember proposing that there be a board war, but this is best left to the parkeur poseurs.

Random observations:

Rob predicted the 100 first people there got a present. I think this might have been a seat; the only other thing we got was strange mixes that I thought were part of the deal but turned out to be some strange medley. Star Wars and Patsy Cline? WTF. Moral - the democratisation of mixing technology has -ve side effects, especially when done by geeky trusties.

Two men went in the toilet after i had been there doing a number 2. With each other. I think they might have been doing some dru9 type thing, but one was wearing a Cla55war t-shirt, which tickled me greatly.

They played the Soviet National Anthem. I got goosebumps. I wittered on about Paul Robeson's version of this to the contingent afterwards, for which i am sorry.

They played one of my songs (yes sir I can boogie) as the firstest one of all and the Ilx contingent did well on the selections - I think they played 6 of the 10 we took. It does appear genuinely democratic in that some of the mixes were totally random and indicated that the choice was from a hat, rather than by a DJ. I wonder what would happen if you brought Tubular Bells? Aside from the disco, i think it shows that democracy needs both committment from the governed (don't bring prog rock) and a spriti of engagement from the governors (I despise your music taste, but I will play the record anyway). Dancing and political science - you know it makes sense.

Matt - the taxi driver took time to show me how the route we took in the cab was correct and the best rooute to take. I agreed, but then I didn't have a clue what he was on about and was very pissed.

I met someone from another football organisation and had some drunken work related chat. This might have not been a good thing.

My cousin told me last night that our home town has britain's only high-street Line-dancing outfitters shop. I am proud this morning.

Dave B (daveb), Sunday, 21 March 2004 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

i got a little suspecious of the randomness of the DJ cos the tracks towards the end of the night seemed to be all dancy tracks!

Although I think I'm just bitter they didn't play my Scott Joplin piano rag! Which would have rocked. or cakewalked.. etc. they played another different track from the same other CD that i brought at least..

ken c (ken c), Sunday, 21 March 2004 15:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Awwwwwwwwwww I'm gutted I missed out - the finances were struggling so I was a bit iffy on the day, and then I got a headache so I just stayed in and knitted instead - WE BUILT THIS YARN ON ROCK AND ROLL or something. What an utter chiz. I was going to bring Fischerspooner's cover of the 15th and Live and Let Die, but I couldn't find a copy! I am the suxx0r.

Dave, I have an urgent message for you. It involves a certain food stuff you may have been yammering on about on the publog. You know.

starry, Sunday, 21 March 2004 15:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Have you found them? In SE London? Oh me oh my...

Dave B (daveb), Sunday, 21 March 2004 16:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I hate that I had to leave just when the post-Krafwerkers arrived. And I'm sure the red and black shirt/tie combo made the PROD people happy, since they requested people wear red and black in honour of their, er, revolutionary spirit...

I think the 'gift' to the first 100 was the PROD CD which I got when I picked up my 2 songs. I haven't listened to it yet, though...

Anyway, a great night - wish I could have stayed longer to whoop it up more!

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Sunday, 21 March 2004 21:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, and I will be bringing the Canadian Friends along to the FT affair on Wed...

Jesus, yes - DaveB's trick to get to the bar quickly is perhaps the most useful thing I have learned in years. It helps the bar, and it helps you - win/win!

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Sunday, 21 March 2004 21:14 (twenty-one years ago)

PROD CD? We were there at early doors, 8pm. And no CD was given. Was it just me? I'd want my money back if I'd have spent any getting in.

Dave B (daveb), Sunday, 21 March 2004 21:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Boyler did you get my message on yr phone?

chris (chris), Sunday, 21 March 2004 21:56 (twenty-one years ago)

God what a terrible place/bunch of people (excluding lovely ILXors, of course)/sequence of music.

Yeah right, any 'random' DJ selection that includes sodding 15-minute trance techno hippy goth fuckwit HANDS IN THE AIR LIKE YOU JUST DON'T CARE cackpiles does not entice me back there oh no not at all. And it should be made clear (preferably with some form of facial remodelling) to whoever brought that bloody terrible remix (WHY OH WHY OH WHY) of Crazy in Love that this is not civilised behaviour.

On the other hand, I very much enjoyed the Mr Motivator video that was playing when we arrived, followed by Cher's excercise number.

To summarise: I'd much rather have been in a nice pub with the lovely ILXors mentioned above where we could talk rubbish without disco goths and their bad drugs getting in the way. I may therefore be a rockist.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Monday, 22 March 2004 09:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Wait, where is Freaky Trigger on Wednesday? HSA's friend is flying in from out of town on Wed night and I want to be OUT OF THE HOUSE when this happens.

The River Kate (kate), Monday, 22 March 2004 10:12 (twenty-one years ago)

http://www.freakytrigger.co.uk/pictures/brekky_club_ft.jpg

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 22 March 2004 10:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Liz your fun-hating knows no bounds, oh well

stevem (blueski), Monday, 22 March 2004 10:15 (twenty-one years ago)

'Crazy In Love (Pojmasta mix)' was one of the better tracks played

stevem (blueski), Monday, 22 March 2004 10:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Aw man, was it rub? I am feeling rubbish about staying in ALL WEEKEND now.

Sarah (starry), Monday, 22 March 2004 10:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh god, does this mean we have to do that WEIRD EIGHTIES DANCE?!?!?

(That was the best part of Rock N Roll High School, seeing all the kids do the WEIRD EIGHTIES DANCE to the Ramones.)

The River Kate (kate), Monday, 22 March 2004 10:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Not so much fun-hating as failiure to experience fun in the first place.

Dave, I got the free CD when I left. You didn't miss much. I endured five minutes of hellishly bad 'hilarious' mashup before demoting the CDR to a coaster.

On the plus side, they played both my tunes. No-one danced.

robster (robster), Monday, 22 March 2004 10:20 (twenty-one years ago)

What is this WEIRD EIGHTIES DANCE of which you speak?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 22 March 2004 10:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I am a fun-hater
Twisted fun-hater

But yes Starry it was rub, although you might have enjoyed laughing and pointing at the discogoths.

If the Weird Eighties Dance is the shuffling-while-trying-to-look-cool-and-wearing-all-black-at-the-school-disco-but-not-the-SchoolDiscoTM, count me in! I will be appearing at Club Freaky Trigger as Ally Sheedy (pre-makeover).

Liz :x (Liz :x), Monday, 22 March 2004 11:29 (twenty-one years ago)

'(I Wanna Give You) Devotion' which was a pleasant surprise.

stevem (blueski), Monday, 22 March 2004 11:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I will be appearing at Club Freaky Trigger as Ally Sheedy (pre-makeover).

Swoon

Dave B (daveb), Monday, 22 March 2004 11:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Dave you can be Kevin Sheedy

stevem (blueski), Monday, 22 March 2004 11:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha I need a long black coat and a really grumpy expression. Mad hair I can manufacture with ease.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Monday, 22 March 2004 11:46 (twenty-one years ago)

You're doing grumpy just fine today. I thought it was fun. Bah.

Kevin Sheedy had bad hair. I used to, but rectified this on Saturday. He was also left-footed, unlike me. He drilled free kicks, I floated them. On so many levels, I cannot be Kevin Sheedy. I am going to be Carl the Janitor.

Dave B (daveb), Monday, 22 March 2004 12:06 (twenty-one years ago)

[insert unnecessary "left-footer" comment here]

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 22 March 2004 12:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Sheedy may be more Irish than me. That's saying something.

Dave B (daveb), Monday, 22 March 2004 12:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I was then, and always will be - Anthony Michael Hall as the geek.

Aww Liz - sorry the night was such a bummer. I know the random-ness of the music doesn't always work, and the Windmill is indeed a dive - I warned ya!

I actually rather enjoyed hearing some trancey stuff (Underworld's "Rez" in particular) and even a little d'n'b at one point. But in a former life I used to DJ at raves, so I guess it's a part of me (I hope I'm not a hippie-goth!). I have to say that overall I enjoyed the selected tunes (helped by ILX) - much better than what I would hear at many other establishments around town. But then again I did leave before midnight, so I have no idea what kind of musical oddness ensued from then onwards...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Monday, 22 March 2004 13:22 (twenty-one years ago)

It's OK Rob, not grumpy any more after cathartic swearfest above. I'm all for dive locations and that, bbbbut the playlists on the PROD website sounded really good! Which was why the discogoths and their terrible trainers/tracks were a nasty shock.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Monday, 22 March 2004 13:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Come on! You remember the 80s Dance! With the funny elbow-pumping motions and the side-to-side stepping as hugely popularised by Molly Ringworm.

The River Kate (kate), Monday, 22 March 2004 13:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I was in a trendy No-ho bar which used to be quite good, before getting a good review in Time Out. All the beautiful people arrived and made it k-rub. They were there with tailed mullets, 80s clothes and as the DJ played 80s tracks, they did the 80s dance big style, in a totally unironic way. As far as they were concerned, they were the height of cool, and as far as I am concerned, whichever fashionista monkey is responsible for this, I hope they are happy. The stupid kunts. This heading towards an 80s revival just as Thatcher karks it, leading to gross revisionism leading to an upturn for the right, leading Blair to move even further rightwards. Or something like that.

Dave B (daveb), Monday, 22 March 2004 13:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Stop it, you're scaring me.

The River Kate (kate), Monday, 22 March 2004 13:34 (twenty-one years ago)

this explains Boyler's Billy Ocean hatin' at least

stevem (blueski), Monday, 22 March 2004 13:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I scare myself. I'm serious BTW. The above post isn't a jokey parody.

x-post.

I liked Boris Gardiner though. And nearly brought Eddy Grant to PRoD, as it would have made me laugh to see whether people would dance to 'I don't wanna dance' in a kind of sad ex-cultural studies masters student deconstruction joke kind of way.

Dave B (daveb), Monday, 22 March 2004 13:38 (twenty-one years ago)

absolutely not, altho 'electric avenue' remains le bombe

stevem (blueski), Monday, 22 March 2004 13:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Boris Johnson? Huh? Wha? Oh wait, no, that's one for the Crush of Shame thread, whoops.

Psycho Kate (kate), Monday, 22 March 2004 13:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I would like to go for a pint with Boris J. Is this sublimated desire?

Dave B (daveb), Monday, 22 March 2004 13:48 (twenty-one years ago)

hubba hubba

Dave B (daveb), Monday, 22 March 2004 13:52 (twenty-one years ago)

How did they make him so PINK? I mean, he's a Tory isn't he? Has he been waxing himself with wooly liberal finish or something?

Psycho Kate (kate), Monday, 22 March 2004 13:53 (twenty-one years ago)

We saw him in Islington Wagamama once - he really is that colour. He was accompanied by the small group of blond mopped kiddies which led me to conclude that he's cracked his own formula and started to clone himself to swell the Tory ranks.

robster (robster), Monday, 22 March 2004 13:57 (twenty-one years ago)

And I am like, so jealous!

Sarah (starry), Monday, 22 March 2004 13:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Why not? They've been cloning boybands for years, it was only a matter of time before they did it with Tories.

Psycho Kate (kate), Monday, 22 March 2004 14:00 (twenty-one years ago)

It's a classic case of Technology in the Wrong Hands.

robster (robster), Monday, 22 March 2004 14:04 (twenty-one years ago)

QUANGOTRON

stevem (blueski), Monday, 22 March 2004 14:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Stevem grooves in the midst of goths who have been taken over by aliens...

Dave B (daveb), Monday, 22 March 2004 17:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't see any goths there. I would never suggest a FAP at a place frequented by goths!

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Monday, 22 March 2004 17:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I wish I could post my pics but I have a 'film' camera and it will probably be ages before I finish the reel...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Monday, 22 March 2004 17:59 (twenty-one years ago)

i have unattractive hair

stevem (blueski), Monday, 22 March 2004 18:01 (twenty-one years ago)

You look like a Ted!

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Monday, 22 March 2004 18:02 (twenty-one years ago)

That photo has put me in mind of the Dr Who theme. Plus Daleks and budget props/scenery. Also, I think I can see James Lavelle.

Barima (Barima), Monday, 22 March 2004 20:54 (twenty-one years ago)

am i to assume that everyone else wearing red had also been to kraftwerk?

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 22 March 2004 21:21 (twenty-one years ago)

i kind of enjoyed that PROD place. It was slightly crowded though.. Haha actually, how did liz managed to see anybody's trainers through all the TORSOS in the way of the line of sight??!?! that's amazing!

ken c (ken c), Monday, 22 March 2004 21:34 (twenty-one years ago)

The PROD people suggested wearing red (and black) on their website, so those aren't necessarily Kraftwerkers...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Monday, 22 March 2004 21:35 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe liz was LYING ON THE FLOOR, covered in bouze or summat like...

(oh, OK, fairdos rob)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 22 March 2004 21:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I give props to the red shirt man!

Barima (Barima), Monday, 22 March 2004 21:56 (twenty-one years ago)

which one? the proto-ted, or the sweaty balding one?

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 22 March 2004 21:59 (twenty-one years ago)

On Thursday I walked past the window of The Duke of York and to my shock saw Boris Johnson playing table football with what looked like a very small (adult) tory wife in training. Part of our flat is over this spot and I felt like going into our room and jumping up and down symbolically on his head, but the incursion of laundry prevented this action.

(the Windmill is where old Mission fans go to die)

suzy (suzy), Monday, 22 March 2004 22:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Everyone was wearing red because they were all Urban75 interweb socialists. Fortunately, I was also wearing red so fitted right in.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 22 March 2004 23:37 (twenty-one years ago)

blonde girl in nautical-esque garb: "have you just come from work?"
stevem: "no, kraftwerk"
blonde girl in nautical-esque garb: "well you look very nice"
stevem: "thanks! you look nice too, very nautical"
blonde girl in nautical-esque garb: "nautical?"

i think that's far as the conversation went. she was too hard work really.

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 00:00 (twenty-one years ago)

badical

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 00:07 (twenty-one years ago)

But was she hott, steve?

I think the red'n'black theme was kind of a nod towards Kraftwerk.

Dave B (daveb), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 09:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Suzy: don't start.

With Boris.

Sarah (starry), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 09:48 (twenty-one years ago)

"You look very nice" is hard work?

What does 'nautical' mean? Was she dressed for diving?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 09:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Oo-er missus ect.

Starry do you have longing for the Boris?

Liz :x (Liz :x), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 09:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Boris is bluddy GRATE.

Although the bastard Telegraph wants me to log in so I can read his column - the nadgers! I mean, half arsed anecdotes of public school life followed by misguided medium-right views on The Poor and The Country? Fantastic!

Sarah (starry), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 09:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Boris, yesterday:

Sarah (starry), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 09:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I was shocked, appalled and disgusted that there was no Boris Johnson ILE thread, so have taken the proactive step of starting one myself.

Appalled of Tunbridge Wells (Matt DC), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 09:57 (twenty-one years ago)
