Help me London ILx, you're my only hope! [Dave B birthday FAP, Calthorpe Arms, Friday 8th April 2005]

So it's my birthday on April 8th and I want to get lots of people together in Central London. I need a pub or place that meets these criteria:

- Is central
- Serves nice bouze
- Has a pool table or darts
- Has a room I could book
- Would have some form of means to play music as brought by guests in Club FT stylee

Admittedly, the only place I can think of the is SOAS which I suspect is only to be used for Ptee birthdays. Any more for any more? I want to get it all sorted today and get an email out and about and in people's diaries etc.

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 11 March 2004 11:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Newman Street Blue Posts is bookable, has darts, is central and has Sam Smith's lovely beers.

Ricardo (RickyT), Thursday, 11 March 2004 11:11 (twenty-one years ago)

This is true. It has a quizzer too. And Spanish bars are nearby...but not music facilities

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 11 March 2004 11:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, it has a cd player and amplifier. Could you not borrow a couple of cd decks and a mixer from someone?

Ricardo (RickyT), Thursday, 11 March 2004 11:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Humph. Try to hijack the week of my birthday, are you? Well see if you get invited to my pyjama and toga party, then!

The River Kate (kate), Thursday, 11 March 2004 11:15 (twenty-one years ago)

i know it's a chain and stuff but the O'neills on Conway Street (near warren st. tube) is so nice - it has an upstairs room which is most probably bookable - it has pool table and it's so nice and had TABLE SERVICE last time I was there. amazing.

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 11 March 2004 11:18 (twenty-one years ago)

O'Neills doesn't sell nice beer.

Ricardo (RickyT), Thursday, 11 March 2004 11:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Table service in pubs is wrong.

robster (robster), Thursday, 11 March 2004 11:19 (twenty-one years ago)

beer rockist.

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 11 March 2004 11:20 (twenty-one years ago)

being-served-at-the-bar rockist.

xpost

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 11 March 2004 11:20 (twenty-one years ago)

DB, there's more than likely going to be a party of some kind the Friday or Saturday after that too. Details to follow.....

chris (chris), Thursday, 11 March 2004 11:23 (twenty-one years ago)

DB, does the Betsey Trotwood still do this?

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 11 March 2004 11:27 (twenty-one years ago)

They charge stupid money for the equipment they arrange

chris (chris), Thursday, 11 March 2004 11:29 (twenty-one years ago)

No pool table, but downstairs at the Fitzroy, home of Ewing's infamous pre-wedding party had a good setup. Not ideal if you want to get more than about thirty-forty people in there though.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 11 March 2004 11:55 (twenty-one years ago)

You still have to borrow the cd players/mixer/amp/speakers though.

Ricardo (RickyT), Thursday, 11 March 2004 11:59 (twenty-one years ago)

If you need to hire/borrow a PA and soundman, this would be a perfect excuse to contact ::ha-hem:: ::caff caff:: Percy the Adorable Soundman.

The River Kate (kate), Thursday, 11 March 2004 12:03 (twenty-one years ago)

What about here?

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 11 March 2004 12:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Ooh that sounds rather nice Dave! Keep me away from Galaxian though...

Sarah (starry), Thursday, 11 March 2004 12:26 (twenty-one years ago)

It duz doesn't it. UNless someone can give me a good reason why this doesn't work, I'm goiong to phone ahead...

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 11 March 2004 12:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Shouldn't you be outsourcing that to Stevem?

Liz :x (Liz :x), Thursday, 11 March 2004 12:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll be there. Just as long as you lovely people don't forget my birthday at the GHS on Tuesday 16th!!

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 11 March 2004 13:01 (twenty-one years ago)

why have you not mentioned this before Mark??

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 11 March 2004 13:04 (twenty-one years ago)

What, my birthday celebration, downstairs at the Glasshouse Stores from 6pm on Tuesday 16th?

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 11 March 2004 13:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Stevem = ILX Accenture - outsourcing, consultancy, crap hair, strange tracksuit tops.

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 11 March 2004 13:07 (twenty-one years ago)

That's fighting talk, that is.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 11 March 2004 13:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Damn I will be in Glasgee for this.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 11 March 2004 13:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Can someone confirm or deny that the following day is Good Friday, ergo no work?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 11 March 2004 13:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes. This is why I haf picked this day as everyone will be demob happy.

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 11 March 2004 13:15 (twenty-one years ago)

that weekend is going to be very very messy

/whisper - sten party - friday or saturday after

chris (chris), Thursday, 11 March 2004 13:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Well Robster & I will not be making it any messier. We will instead be in bucolic South Wales eating Easter Eggs with my mum and maybe looking at castles and things. Boohoo, no parties.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Thursday, 11 March 2004 14:03 (twenty-one years ago)

crap hair?

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 11 March 2004 14:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I will be in church getting Maundy Money from an old woman.

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 11 March 2004 14:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Arf. My mum will be escaping from the dreaded Office for National Stas/Patent Office Maundy Thursday Sports Day.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Thursday, 11 March 2004 14:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Gazza, did you know that your birthday is immediately after the START OF THE NEW TAX YEAR?

the bluefox, Thursday, 11 March 2004 14:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes. What are the fiscal implications of this? Do we all have super duper budgets to embezzle and spend on presents for me?

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 11 March 2004 14:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Grrrrrr. Good Friday. Easter Saturday. All that religious Death crap has a real way of spoiling your birthday.

The River Kate (kate), Thursday, 11 March 2004 15:33 (twenty-one years ago)

i can't make it, i'm going to be in the states from the 8-18th. boo.

kate, when's the pyjama party?

colette (a2lette), Thursday, 11 March 2004 16:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Well it's here from about 5 on THURSDAY 8TH APRIL. Bring presents and cards to celebrate me becoming a 30 year old.

Right. Need those coming to reprazent for numbers like. Also, anyone got any musical type players sound systems, or know where to get em? The alternative is that I do 6 CDs worth of music and hand them to the bar staff and they play them in theie 6CD sound system at random in a People's Republic of Disco litre kinda way. I quite like this idea TBH so RSVP with 4 songs you want played. Only special choons allowed before I was born.

Finally, I was so taken with Ptee's idea of doing a quiz about himself, I think I might do one about myself. Sorry. It won't last long, but I have a large ego to feed.

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 11 March 2004 17:04 (twenty-one years ago)

1. Live and Let Die
2. to be continued!

Sarah (starry), Thursday, 11 March 2004 17:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I shall be there, resplendent in all my finery.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 11 March 2004 17:06 (twenty-one years ago)

(Will there be Real People as well as Interweb Mentalists?)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 11 March 2004 17:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Football mentalists!!!!!

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 11 March 2004 17:07 (twenty-one years ago)

i should be able to make this and would enjoy doing just that.

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 11 March 2004 17:07 (twenty-one years ago)

This is presumably the Guns and Roses Version, as the Wings one is from 1973, so a case must be made for it being a special choon.

Note to lost ILM users - move along there's nothing to see here

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 11 March 2004 17:08 (twenty-one years ago)

There will be real people drawn from the worlds of London football fans (with particular reference to AFC Wimbledon), some people who happened to be at Lancaster University between 1992-95 and other assorted non-interweb people. All suffer from varying degrees of mentalism.

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 11 March 2004 17:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Just out of interest what was result of the top of the table six-pointer last night?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 11 March 2004 17:11 (twenty-one years ago)

1-1. They will be happier with the result, but we're happier with what it means championship-wise. 13 points and a game in hand ahead. Sorted.

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 11 March 2004 17:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Honours even, a point apiece, fair result, mustn't grumble, fucking inbred oxfordshire bastards.

Action on video here

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 11 March 2004 17:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Hurrah! I will most likely be in attendance.

Ricardo (RickyT), Thursday, 11 March 2004 17:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I have to catch the Eurostar at 5am the day after this. Do I:

a) Get a good night's sleep; or
b) Decide that I may as well stay up ALL NIGHT?

We will see.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Thursday, 11 March 2004 17:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Naturally the start of the tax year will affect your decision.

the bellefox, Thursday, 11 March 2004 17:38 (twenty-one years ago)

As will the fact that London ILX cadet Rob Bolton stayed out and fapped yesterday and then got up at 4am to go to a highly important meeting.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 11 March 2004 23:13 (twenty-one years ago)

i think all this 'important meeting' stuff is a big lie. i think he's really unemployed and just likes to come to faps all dressed up...

colette (a2lette), Thursday, 11 March 2004 23:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I *MAY* be employed by then. Well, may be, being conditional on them paying me what I asked for. In which case I will buy drinks. For a change. no, wait a minute, you should all buy me drinks for my birthday. So i guess we're even. Yeah.

The pyjama party would have been on the 10th, of course. So you miss it either way, Colette. :-(

The River Kate (kate), Friday, 12 March 2004 00:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah, here it is. ::bump::

Repeat the question - can I bring IRL friends and crash the party>

Psycho Kate (kate), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 13:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Yiz. As long as they are not goths and will feed my egojoin the 'fun'

I'm currently debating whether to change the venue. Has anyone ever been to this place? I haven't, y'see.

I sent this email - I'll repost here in an act of increasing desperation.

Anyway, it's my 30th Birthday. Yes, 30, whodathowtit, haven't I grown etc.

I'm celebrating it here.

Nearest tube is Chancery Lane, but it's conveniently near bus routes going to Waterloo and Angel (341) and not too far from Farringdon. But you're adults and I'm sure you can make your way about the metropolis.

Those of you wanting a streetmap reference, click here.

The date - important bit this - is THURSDAY APRIL 8TH from 5pm. The bar goes on until normal closing hours. As it's the start of the Easter weekend, it classes as a non-school night, so more boozing may be done in a dodgy late bar near Tottenham Court Road.

The fun is endless. I have invited a diverse group of people from the worlds of government, sport, media, entertainment and the public services, and interweb messageboards who will mix delightfully. I will be entertained by the presents you have brought me (I am not too old for gifts) or at least nice cards. You will be entertained by various means:

- The pub has a super-duper 6 CD randomising gubbins, so I shall be burning some CDs. I will be choosing what choons to play depending on what you specify to me when you RSVP. Apologies for the People's Republic of Disco for the original idea here.

- I will be having a fun general knowledge quiz for crap prizes, with most questions about my first 30 years on planet earth. Apologies to Pete Baran for the original idea here.

- The pub has an upstairs with pool tables and a dart board and old style arcade machines where you sit down and can rest your pint on them.

So, be there and feel free to bring a guest. I could do with knowing who's coming as I've told the pub at least 25 people will be coming and this gives me ample opportunity to cancel when I find out only 4 people can be bothered to come (note attempt at self-deprecating humour masking plea to attend saturated in pathos and fear in equal measure).

Let me know if you're coming and crucially - 4 songs you would like to hear. I am the only one who can pick songs from before I was born, so confine choices to 1974-present. 80- electro-pop will be smiled upon by me unless it's Jean Michel Jarre; don't bother if that was your plan.

Dave B (daveb), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 13:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Aw, I'm sorry I will miss this, Dave. I'm flying across the Atlantic on the 7th :(

sgs (sgs), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 14:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think any of my friends are goths... are you sure about this, Dave, before I send an email to my mates? (Not like any of them will actually turn up, but it's worth trying.)

Psycho Kate (kate), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 14:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Send it. I might have to pretend they are dear friends though and come over all familiar like a loony drunk.

Dave B (daveb), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 14:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, you can pretend to know my friends, it's alright - but if you try to claim my presents as yer own, I might have to hit you or something!!! (However, I don't think you will be the slightest bit interested in rare Busted singles, for some reason, so it might not be a problem...)

Psycho Kate (kate), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 14:13 (twenty-one years ago)

April os shaping up to be "another month of ruin - Ruin's revenge"

chris (chris), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 14:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Have you started drinking already, Chris? ;-)

Psycho Kate (kate), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 14:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not sure there ARE any rare Busted singles. All their releases have gone top five, suggesting they aren't that rare.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 14:15 (twenty-one years ago)

You'd be surprised. Some are rarer than others. Singles that sell really well go out of print quicker!

(Hint to anyone considering my present: don't worry, I already have the limited edition tour single!!!)

Psycho Kate (kate), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 14:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I faithfully promise to not put my mits on your busted, Kate.

Dave B (daveb), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 14:18 (twenty-one years ago)

That sounds dirty. Stop it.

Psycho Kate (kate), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 14:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Erm Kate, are you still posting????!!!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 14:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Heh heh, whoops, caught out... no, seriously! This is funny... we got bored of listening to the radio, so I said that I'd put on one of my CDs. (This is a pretty major accomplishment for any office!) But unfortunately, the only band any of them have heard of is Busted, so we have to listen to that.

(I mean, not like I mind, but really! How can you not even have *heard* of The Ramones or the Velvet Underground?)

Psycho Kate (kate), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 14:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Gazza: are you sure you want to hear music that I like?

the beebfox, Wednesday, 24 March 2004 14:50 (twenty-one years ago)

The music is the soundtrack to the event, and I want that soundtrack to reflect the people coming to the event.

Dave B (daveb), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 15:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, wait. You're picking the music? Uuuuhhhhh... I have great fear about inviting my mates now... (Unless I can burn one of the CDs for random selection? Can I? Or else my gift Busted CDs are going in!)

Psycho Kate (kate), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 15:14 (twenty-one years ago)

The CD playa downstairs has space for 6 CDs and can play the lot at random - this was my plan then - get all the songs people requested onto CDs then play the all at random. I am not picking the music, though I will have more choices than anyone because I am king for a day.

Dave B (daveb), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 15:28 (twenty-one years ago)

you have my choices Boyler - make it so

chris (chris), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 15:33 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, I'm thinking this is a bad idea now as I'm descending into pity party proportions over this music issue. :-(

Psycho Kate (kate), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 15:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Live and Let Die! And Party Till You Puke! And Countdown by Pulp (if I may be excused).

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 15:36 (twenty-one years ago)

And the 15th! And something goth! And a surprise! And a monkey! That eats ice cream!

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 15:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not letting any monkey eat my ice cream.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 15:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes I do admit that I would not want a monkey that eats ice cream. But perhaps the Waitrose demographic has terrible problems getting rid of their ice cream surplus, I wouldn't know, I shop at Peonic Safeways, you see.

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 15:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I am going to bring 14 minute prog-house epic complete with digeridoo and Star Wars samples for that full-on PROD Trustie voibe.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Changing the venue is a recipe for confusion and disaster. This place looks good.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 16:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Tubular bells in banned. There is no bringing of tunes except by me. This is not a democracy.

Dave B (daveb), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 16:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Is it a dictatorship of the proletariat?

Ricardo (RickyT), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 16:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Boom Shake Shake Shake The Room - Mark Hibbett cover version please! And, the Despondent Lapwing back catalogue.

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 16:18 (twenty-one years ago)

It is a degenerate workers' state.

Dave B (daveb), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 16:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Regulate! So Glad You're Mine! Sleep the Clock Around! Fuck the Pain Away!

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 17:11 (twenty-one years ago)

The Archies - Sugar Sugar. Busted - Air Hostess. Not that you asked. Sniff.

Psycho Kate (kate), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 17:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I did - above!

Dave B (daveb), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 17:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't get no email. Sniff.

Psycho Kate (kate), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 17:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Even better, can someone do a Peaches/B&S mashup called Fuck the Clock Away?

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 17:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I used ILx for most Ilxors innit

Dave B (daveb), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 17:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Make a rude joke about Stevem and I'll forgive you. ;-)

Psycho Kate (kate), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 17:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Stevem, stevem, he's really really dreadful, and his girlfriends are unfulfilled and alienated...

That sort of thing, Kate?

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 17:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Not that kind of rude. Rude-saucy-kinda-sexy, not rude-make-the-poor-boy-cry!

Honestly!

Psycho Kate (kate), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 17:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Cor, that Stevem. I'd put my spatula near his shuttlecock, make no flapjackking mistake, matron, oo?

Better?

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 17:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Much.

Psycho Kate (kate), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 17:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll be there, Dave! And may well bring a couple of special ILX guests!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 25 March 2004 14:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Would these be the same special guests who will be present at the April 1 FAP?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 25 March 2004 14:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes. They will be no surprise by the 8th, but still a delight, of course.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 25 March 2004 15:10 (twenty-one years ago)

You know, I just might...

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 26 March 2004 11:10 (twenty-one years ago)

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 26 March 2004 11:15 (twenty-one years ago)

bumpie.

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 29 March 2004 13:37 (twenty-one years ago)

There's no food at my do, sadly.

Dave B (daveb), Monday, 29 March 2004 13:46 (twenty-one years ago)

When has there ever been food at one of these events?

(Apart from the DeanFAP obviously but that doesn't count)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 29 March 2004 13:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Wot, not even a birthday cake?

Super-Kate (kate), Monday, 29 March 2004 13:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Unless someonje brings a cake, there will be no cake. I am not bringing a cake to my own tossing birthday. It is beyond abject to do so.

Dave B (daveb), Monday, 29 March 2004 14:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll bring you a cake if you bring me a cake...

Ah, feck it. I'm making birthday cookies.

Super-Kate (kate), Monday, 29 March 2004 14:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Did someone mention cake & cookies...?

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 29 March 2004 14:04 (twenty-one years ago)

If someone wishes to bring a Hollan's Cheese and Onion pie, I will be grateful. It will make my birthday.

Dave B (daveb), Monday, 29 March 2004 14:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I will make BUSTED COOKES and SCOOBY SNACKS. This will be awesome.

Super-Kate (kate), Monday, 29 March 2004 14:06 (twenty-one years ago)

*drools*

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 29 March 2004 14:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I just said "awesome". I need to stop listening to teeny-bop-pop.

Super-Kate (kate), Monday, 29 March 2004 14:14 (twenty-one years ago)

ken c (ken c), Monday, 29 March 2004 14:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Super-Kate (kate), Monday, 29 March 2004 14:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Super-Kate (kate), Monday, 29 March 2004 14:20 (twenty-one years ago)

What with? a nice cloth to keep flies off...

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 29 March 2004 14:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Tupperwear, it works wonders.

Super-Kate (kate), Monday, 29 March 2004 14:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Now where can I get ground herbal medicine, do you suppose?

Super-Kate (kate), Monday, 29 March 2004 14:28 (twenty-one years ago)

If I were going to be at the pub for this and not in Wales, I'd bring cake/muffins/cookies/scones. But I'm not.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Monday, 29 March 2004 14:31 (twenty-one years ago)

tease! ;-)

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 29 March 2004 14:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Hah! Actually, I feel sad that I'm not going to be able to bring home baking to feed nice people (and the rest). Erk I am secretly domestic.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Monday, 29 March 2004 14:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Argh! That's a great recipe for Scooby Snacks and now they've moved me to a different computer, not only do I have a shitty, shitty mouse, but now I can't see my scooby snack recipe!

Super-Kate (kate), Monday, 29 March 2004 14:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey, Dave, this is still happening, right? Or did you actually see The Castle and change your mind? Cause I finally got around to inviting (read: stopped feeling neurotic enough to actually contact) some IRL friends.

Super-Kate (kate), Sunday, 4 April 2004 16:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I am flying leftwards over the Atlantic later than I thought, so I hope to be able to wish you HB in person Dave. (Given that I am germ-free by then.)

sgs (sgs), Sunday, 4 April 2004 17:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Hurrah!

Went to the Castle. Looked OK, where OK means - not wanky and full of twats (until we arrive har har). It is still on.

I need choons from people - the alternative is that I choose the music, which is not a good idea for everyone lese, though I think it rocks, obv.

Dave B (daveb), Sunday, 4 April 2004 19:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I could offer more suggestions, but it would be more along the "Yummy Yummy Yummy" by the Ohio Express sort of line. Oh, and Sloan. Any party is always made better by Sloan. Maybe "Snowsuit Sound".

Super-Kate (kate), Monday, 5 April 2004 06:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Please to be getting your hands on the music from:

1. The Baileys advert
2. The Orange "TRY" advert

Fankoo!

Sarah (starry), Monday, 5 April 2004 07:58 (twenty-one years ago)

the Orange TRY advert music is off the new Air album...cant remember
which track tho (Surfing On A Rocket?)

stevem (blueski), Monday, 5 April 2004 08:33 (twenty-one years ago)

It is?! K-blimey-o! Hello Mister CD!

Sarah (starry), Monday, 5 April 2004 08:35 (twenty-one years ago)

The Baileys advert is Minnie Ripperton.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 5 April 2004 08:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Um

Sarah (starry), Monday, 5 April 2004 08:39 (twenty-one years ago)

S'alright, it's 4 Hero apparently?

Sarah (starry), Monday, 5 April 2004 08:40 (twenty-one years ago)

alas not 'Cookin Up Ya Brain'

stevem (blueski), Monday, 5 April 2004 08:42 (twenty-one years ago)

ah yeh the new Baileys ad is 'Les Fleur' but not sure which version (Minnie or 4 Hero)

stevem (blueski), Monday, 5 April 2004 08:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Pick three, Hmm?

"House of Jealous Lovers"/"Hitsville U.K" (Clash)/"lola" McFly Vs Busted

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 5 April 2004 08:46 (twenty-one years ago)

4 Hero according to commercialbreaksandbeats!

Man, I watch too much TV!

Sarah (starry), Monday, 5 April 2004 08:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Boyle, some artists that I like include, Lloyd Cole, the Sundays, Deacon Blue, Ricky Nelson, Doris Day and the Railway Children.

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 09:13 (twenty-one years ago)

There will be European kids MCing badly over Prince records while their mate plays the harmonica!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 09:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not selling this, am I?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 09:17 (twenty-one years ago)

It's my party and I'll gaze at my shoes cos I want to.

Dave B (daveb), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 09:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I shall do my best to bring our special guests along!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 16:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Only if one of them is black.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 16:50 (twenty-one years ago)

who are these special guests? I'd like to know, as I can't make it tomorrow.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 16:52 (twenty-one years ago)

it's irrelevant then ainit

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 16:58 (twenty-one years ago)

why?

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 17:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean, I'm just curoius to know who I've missed now.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 17:06 (twenty-one years ago)

If we say, they might not turn up.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 17:44 (twenty-one years ago)

wow indie upstairs and nu-metal downstairs??! this place sounds like heaven

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 17:44 (twenty-one years ago)

it's like passionately kissing an indie girl on the lips and getting a blowjob off a goth with a pierced tongue at the same time.

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 17:45 (twenty-one years ago)

You're going to love our special guests then Ken.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 17:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean, I'm just curoius to know who I've missed now.

there are only two possible reactions - i) "oh no! i'd really like to meet them! now i am so unhappy i can't make it" and ii) "oh...well i'm not that bothered about meeting them really" - neither of these strike me as useful feelings so you might as well not know (i know in reality this is not satisfactory but just to highlight the logic bereft in such situations eh?)

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 17:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Just checked - Celtic on the telly downstairs...

CDs burned. Quiz set. Excited.

Dave B (daveb), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 18:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I shall see you there too. I'm 'in passing' mode so have to leave early. But...

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 8 April 2004 07:22 (twenty-one years ago)

are these the same special guests as last week, or MORE special guests?

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Thursday, 8 April 2004 07:25 (twenty-one years ago)

hehe, when you look on streemap, the pub is right next to "dr. johnson's ho", god i'm easily pleased some times :)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Thursday, 8 April 2004 07:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Dr. Johnson's Ho is down a spooky alley way and quite old. As all good Ho's should be!

Super-Kate (kate), Thursday, 8 April 2004 07:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I would also like to apologise in advance for not bringing cookies, but I was unable to find any cookie dough! Honestly! Am I expected to whip up such things from scratch?

I contemplated buying some Jaffa Cakes and icing them to say H A P P Y B I R T H D A Y but you can't even get premixed icing at my Sainsburys and doing it by hand just seemed like too much work.

So sorry.

Super-Kate (kate), Thursday, 8 April 2004 07:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Forget cookies, bring OWLS!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 8 April 2004 07:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I will have to ask HSA if we can bring the OOOOOOWLS.

Super-Kate (kate), Thursday, 8 April 2004 07:42 (twenty-one years ago)

so is this FAP happening at the castle still?

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 8 April 2004 07:45 (twenty-one years ago)

and is there food there besides BYOowls?

sgs (sgs), Thursday, 8 April 2004 07:55 (twenty-one years ago)

ooh, owl sammich, yum...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Thursday, 8 April 2004 07:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Have a great evening Dave!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 8 April 2004 08:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Sarah are you posting from the US?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 8 April 2004 08:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not bringing the owls if you're going to EAT them! No way!

Super-Kate (kate), Thursday, 8 April 2004 08:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Boyle:

1) what time shall we show?

2) are you going to play The Railway Children?

I suppose 2) may have a bearing on 1).

the pinefox, Thursday, 8 April 2004 08:07 (twenty-one years ago)

as the CDs will be randomised THERE'S NO TELLING when a song may be on (although if the CDs do not include TRC then it's unlikely they will turn up at any point, obv...)

i might finish early, but i might also go to a work leaving do, but this will prolly still get me there before 6...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Thursday, 8 April 2004 08:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes. It is still at the Castle.

No food, except what people bring. I am cheap, innit.

xpost madness.

PF - I am searching for some Railway Children as we speak. I shall be there at about 6. Feel free to come any time from 5.30 onwards though.

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 8 April 2004 08:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I predict that I will be screaming for beer by the end of today, I will be wanting to watch the footie downsatirs though. may have to pop to Wagamama's for some food too

reminder to Vic - remember to bring Dave's special gum

chris (chris), Thursday, 8 April 2004 08:19 (twenty-one years ago)

When come bring gum

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 8 April 2004 08:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Boyle: "Every Beat of the Heart"!

+ how about, say, the Sundays' "Love"

and also Lloyd Cole's "Like Lovers Do"?

If you want to be populist then... "Pretty In Pink"?

the pinefox, Thursday, 8 April 2004 08:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Every Beat Of My Heart? What, like Josie And The Pussycats! That's very special bubblegum indeed!

Super-Kate (kate), Thursday, 8 April 2004 08:32 (twenty-one years ago)

"The"

the thefox, Thursday, 8 April 2004 08:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Matt, see above: my flight is actually Saturday, not yesterday. I have no idea why I thought for so long it was the 7th, not the 10th. It even made me lie to my mother.

sgs (sgs), Thursday, 8 April 2004 08:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Total Eclipse of the Heart! Who Ate All The Pies! Voodoo Ray! We Built This City On Rock And Roll!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 8 April 2004 08:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Who Let The Owls Out! Woooooo Woooooooo Woooooooooooooooooooooooooo?

Super-Kate (kate), Thursday, 8 April 2004 08:36 (twenty-one years ago)

What IS this bloody owl thing for f#cks sake?

sarah not at work, Thursday, 8 April 2004 08:56 (twenty-one years ago)

It's a bird thing

chris (chris), Thursday, 8 April 2004 08:56 (twenty-one years ago)

i feel like crap and am snowed under with work but i will try and make it

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 8 April 2004 09:00 (twenty-one years ago)

solution: take sick leave, go home, sleep

AND THEN COME OUT LATER!

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 8 April 2004 09:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha-ha, apparently there's some kind of work-doo drinks thing tonight as well. Heh. Oh ruin, oh no...

Super-Kate (kate), Thursday, 8 April 2004 09:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm reading a script all about Owls right now. They're spooky Welsh not-at-all-nice owls.

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 8 April 2004 09:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't suppose anyone bothered making my suggested Peaches + B&S mash-op did they? Stevem?

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 8 April 2004 09:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Was that "Fuck the Clock Around"?

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 8 April 2004 10:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Cor, is it the Owl Service, Mark?

Ricardo (RickyT), Thursday, 8 April 2004 10:08 (twenty-one years ago)

It is! One of our clients is adapting it for the screen. It's pretty good too, though not close to being a final draft.

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 8 April 2004 10:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Having regained the ability to walk I shall attend. I'd like to have contributed to the evening's sonictertainment but I have left my copy of Idil Biret playing Ligeti's Piano Etudes at home. You'll have to make do with me humming them. I have to be really sodden to start on the horn concerto though.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Thursday, 8 April 2004 11:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I probably won't be dropping by immediately after work or even immediately after the work drinks (if I go) because I have to go home and... three guesses...?

Super-Kate (kate), Thursday, 8 April 2004 11:06 (twenty-one years ago)

1. Make boyfriend dinner
2. Collect owls
3. Buy expensive present for Dave B

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 8 April 2004 11:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Does this mean there is definitely going to be a film version? Or is it more of a speculative script?

Ricardo (RickyT), Thursday, 8 April 2004 11:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Set Video to tape Busted on TOTP

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 8 April 2004 11:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Argh, you got it in one, Matt. (Except for the expensive present. Unless cookie dough countes.) I feel like this strange panto comedy moment every time I say I have to go home to... like this strange chorus of men in drag and people dressed as animals will all sing "MAKE H S A HIS TEA...!"

(Busted were on TOTP *last* week, anyway.)

Super-Kate (kate), Thursday, 8 April 2004 11:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey! Has anybody even wished Dave a Happy Birthday yet?!

Happy Birthday Dave!!!

sgs (sgs), Thursday, 8 April 2004 11:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha-ha, well, my imaginary jaffa cakes did, even if I didn't!

Super-Kate (kate), Thursday, 8 April 2004 11:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Happy birthday Dave! We're going to beat the conehead scum tonight just for you!

Simon Bassey (Mark C), Thursday, 8 April 2004 11:45 (twenty-one years ago)

oh yes, happAFC birthledon Dave!

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 8 April 2004 11:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Cheers Sarah. You are all hatas etc.

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 8 April 2004 11:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Happy Birthday Mr B. May your football clubs be forever fan run.

Ricardo (RickyT), Thursday, 8 April 2004 11:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry, misunderstood entire tuneage thing. Probably too late but I would like to hear:

Dennis Wilson - "River Song" (1977)
AC Marias - "Just Talk" (1986)
Associates - "Skipping" (1982)
Klute - "Perceptron" (1997)

Failing that, just some late-period Carpenters and a big shout-out to anybody who knows me.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Thursday, 8 April 2004 12:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I am not wishing Boyle anything until

a) I see him in person

b) he plays "Every Beat Of The Heart"

the blissfox, Thursday, 8 April 2004 12:51 (twenty-one years ago)

your love is so conditional Pf

chris (chris), Thursday, 8 April 2004 12:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Looks like the special guests won't be along. They seem to be more keen on spending time with each other than with dozens of ILXers, weirdly. Ah well. As a consolation/booby prize, I shall be along anyway, sixish.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 8 April 2004 12:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Martin, I believe that I would rather see you than... them.

the bellefox, Thursday, 8 April 2004 13:01 (twenty-one years ago)

but only if he plays "every beat of the heart"?

chris (chris), Thursday, 8 April 2004 13:02 (twenty-one years ago)

O, I know *he* won't play it.

the beefox, Thursday, 8 April 2004 13:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Thank you, the Pinefox! I'm enjoying having them here, though.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 8 April 2004 13:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Can you not even convince them to turn up late/arrive and leave early then? It'd be cool to meet them if only for half an hour or so.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 8 April 2004 13:09 (twenty-one years ago)

the more talk of 'them', the more off-putting for 'them', i suspect

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 8 April 2004 13:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Them?

the bluefox, Thursday, 8 April 2004 13:28 (twenty-one years ago)

http://www.klattu.com.ar/images/them.jpg

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 8 April 2004 13:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, Them

the bellefox, Thursday, 8 April 2004 14:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Not Them, again?
http://www.rockzirkus.de/lexikon/bilder/t/them/again.jpg

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 8 April 2004 14:07 (twenty-one years ago)

If it's Them, or They, then I hope they show up after all.

the bluefox, Thursday, 8 April 2004 14:11 (twenty-one years ago)

They won't! I am sick of the disappointment! I don't believe in THEM any more!

Super-Kate (kate), Thursday, 8 April 2004 14:11 (twenty-one years ago)

HBDB!!!

won't be there. have a good time.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 8 April 2004 14:16 (twenty-one years ago)

aw man i think i'm about to finish work NOW (4.20), and i've already had a pint at lunchtime, i feel ruin calling me to her sweet bosom already...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Thursday, 8 April 2004 14:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I think this is going to be an epic one, boys and girls...

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 8 April 2004 14:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Great, my poor IRL friends. Well, of the two that have RSVP'd, both of them are lurkers so I guess they sort of know what they're getting into...

Super-Kate (kate), Thursday, 8 April 2004 14:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Whereas I have *no idea*

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 8 April 2004 14:25 (twenty-one years ago)

mu-wahahahahahahaha, fressshhhh meeeeaaatttt, fresssshhhh meeeeaaat...

(really i'm going to the pub any second)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Thursday, 8 April 2004 14:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Mark you should anticipate good beer, genial conversation, bad singing and worse dancing and failing completely to put 35 names to faces.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 8 April 2004 14:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Also blood sucking and cannibalism.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 8 April 2004 14:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I wanna go home!!! I wanna go home now!!! That was the one good thing about this drinks thing was that we would get to leave the office at 5. Even though I got here at 8.30 this morning, which means I should get to go home in fifteen minutes.

I wonder if I just stamp and strop and throw a temper tantrum shouting BUT IT'S MY BIRTHDAY!!! if they will let me go.

Super-Kate (kate), Thursday, 8 April 2004 14:44 (twenty-one years ago)

WTF goes on nine months before this week every year? I know like nine people with birthdays in the space of seven days.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 8 April 2004 14:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Theres four people with birthdays in the space of seven days in our House!

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 8 April 2004 14:47 (twenty-one years ago)

It's because parents aim to have their children just in time to qualify for the tax break without actually having to support said child for the entire year. This is actually true. My brother's and my birthday are within a week of each other for this reason.

Super-Kate (kate), Thursday, 8 April 2004 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I am so on the beer tonight, I've been takking it easy for ages on the booze front, I've had a pig of a day and my guts are screaming for beer. Phear me

chris (chris), Thursday, 8 April 2004 14:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Argh... fuck sitting around doing nothing at work. I am knocking off down the pub half an hour early.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 8 April 2004 14:51 (twenty-one years ago)

It's not like I am doing anything anyway! Grrrr. Except bashing my head against the desk trying to make this "Monthly Matrix" report work. And it's just not going to happen in the next half hour, and if I keep trying, I'm going to get sucked into my computer or something.

Dude, I am a contractor. I was sold on this job on the idea of flexibility. I should go...

Super-Kate (kate), Thursday, 8 April 2004 14:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Summer hormones, that's my guess.

I'm a bit miffed that these special guests don't think we're worth hanging with.

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 8 April 2004 14:55 (twenty-one years ago)

ttg.

Laters...

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 8 April 2004 14:58 (twenty-one years ago)

What a day for the work computer to crash and lose all our company data - all 4 year's accumulated electronic data.

Will hopefully be there by 6.

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 8 April 2004 15:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Hurrah for backups?

Might not be there before 8 :(

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 8 April 2004 15:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Backups was helpfully on the same hard drive.

For the record, I did not set up the backup...

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 8 April 2004 15:34 (twenty-one years ago)

So you've lost... THE RAILWAY CHILDREN?

the bellefox, Thursday, 8 April 2004 15:43 (twenty-one years ago)

You're obviously going to send the disk to a data recovery service? Any ILXors able to recommend one?

(p.s. fire the IT bloke)

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 8 April 2004 15:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Steady Mike!

the bellefox, Thursday, 8 April 2004 16:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh dear lord! That sounds grim! I'm so glad I'm not the IT guy any more... sheesh!

Glad I went home first coz I AM BEING TAKEN OUT TO DINNER!! WOO!!! PIZZA PORCETTA, HERE I COME!!! So won't be there till 7.30 at the earliest now... if HSA stops making labels for his exhibits for just a minute...

Super-Kate (kate), Thursday, 8 April 2004 16:18 (twenty-one years ago)

This was a top FAP! Thanks, Dave!

My guests aren't home yet, so I have not yet conveyed the disappointment and (in Kate's case) the scepticism to them.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 8 April 2004 22:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Happy birthday, Boyle-bloke.

Lara (Lara), Thursday, 8 April 2004 22:50 (twenty-one years ago)

happy birthday, Dave! Hope it was a fantastic night.

(would probably have appeared to say so in person, but am sickly.)

cis (cis), Thursday, 8 April 2004 23:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey yeah, nice to have (at least) seen yez all.

I had to go around nineish to catch the train to Newcastle (Managed to smash a fingernail on the stupid two doors at 90 degrees setup downstairs exit door of pub. Pressed finger against nice cool building and now have interesting purple nail effect, never mind).

So, where did it all end that evening?

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 08:06 (twenty-one years ago)

i wimped out of going to METAL at the borderline because my feet hurt too much.

the QUIZ was good, as was the night as a whole, although i was feeling a bit tired by the end.

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 08:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Special guests were later seen on the bus by Me and Carsmile. They would not have got any of the questions right in the self regarding quiz anyway. Top night mind.

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 08:17 (twenty-one years ago)

BTW, Mark, the pressie was excellent! Caused much giggling round our flat. Especially Problem at the Gay Bar!

Super-Kate (kate), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 09:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Nice one. For me it was the "Jacko under pressure". Neither record did I Like before, but that one combination is brilliant, now.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 10:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Under Pressure sounds good with ANYTHING. Fact.

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 10:13 (twenty-one years ago)

i was so disappointed by this whole lack of special guests thing i ended up having to bring my own special guest!

carsmile was indeed a WIMP for missing out NU-METALLNESS, although actually we ended up at ELECTRO-CLASHNESS at this other place after a chance encounter with some girl with nice shoes on charing cross road. this place had some kind of weird HAT CONTEST going on, and there was a guy wearing a giant fluffy letter "A" on his head.

got home at 5am, i was indeed hardcore.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 10:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Ken is it true that this club contained a man wearing a hat and NOTHING ELSE?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 10:37 (twenty-one years ago)

it's okay, I know who the special guest are now, I have my ways.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 15:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks one and all who came and made it a really, really special night; so special in fact that i have but vague memories of most of it.

Special thanks go to Pete for being quizmaster, and I have a vague memory of Mike Jones assisting with the marking of the answers. Thanks to Emma, Alan and pete who brought me cards.

Mark - did you do that CD yourself? I have yet another vague memory of someone giving me a CD which I thought was a pressie. Was this the case? Or was I supposed to put it on so everyone could hear? And do you want it back? I listened to it on Saturday and thought it was very grebt indeed.

Thanks to the PF for comparing me to a classic English fool in the courtly sense; he assures me that this is not a criticism. Thanks to all of you who suggested choons; someone from the bar downstairs liked the selection so much, they wanted a copy to rip them. Maybe they were taking the piss.

Thanks again to everyoine who came and made it special for me. Apologies if I didn't really get to speak to you; it wasn't ignorance but booze and an abundance of people I haven't seen in ages.

Ended up in Costa Dorada and then have little memory after then, apart from leaving a tin of cake in the corner and getting a cab home.

PS - Who won the quiz?

PPS - The Topical Times Football book 1973-4 is brilliant. It reveals that the most pressing issue facing the game, in mainstream eyes, was the problem of players being 'trendsetters' which was the code for 'long-haired'. Innocence...

Dave B (daveb), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 09:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I won the quiz. Well, me and our crack team of ex-pseudoLancastrians.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 09:33 (twenty-one years ago)

We won because we are KINGS. Anyone could see that.

My evening ended with me pouring sardine-infused olive oil over some poor woman's sleeve. In the manner of a KING, obv.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 09:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Hi, glad you liked the CD, it was a prezzie, merrie birthday, all that. No I didn't 'do' all that, or indeed any of it. Once in a while, I compile the best 'boot/mash' tracks I find into a cool compilation. That's the third one I've made up.

Laters...

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 09:38 (twenty-one years ago)

PS I meant 'poor' above to mean 'unfortunate'. I wasn't trying to suggest that I sought out someone who looked underprivileged and then deliberately covered them in fishy oil. That is not what happened.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 09:38 (twenty-one years ago)

That's Tim Hopkins. He opresses the poor with fish oil. Not since the days on Charles II have we seen such flagrant abuse by a landowner over serfs.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 09:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Happy birthday Dave! Sorry I left a bit earlier, but I did write you a goodbye note on our quiz sheet!

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 09:47 (twenty-one years ago)

My chief memories of the evening are DB dancing in celebration of Larsson's 'goal' and Cabbage singing along with Northside. That's Northside, ladies and gentlemen. Oh, and earlier, Lixi and I just failing to have chutney wine at a restaurant along "The" Gray's Inn Road. Because there was no such thing as chutney wine.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 10:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I danced?

Does Northside no make you nostalgically recall Granada Soccernight with Elton Welsby?

Dave B (daveb), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 10:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I have a suspicion everything makes you nostalgically recall Granada Soccernight with Elton Welsby, Dave.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 10:18 (twenty-one years ago)

matt i think it's true!! although the memory was vague as i was truck raced by that point though.

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 14:45 (twenty-one years ago)

.. so he won't need a copy of the CD then?

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)

So, OK, dumb question time, but what the heck do you use to strip the vocals/music out so perfectly? Cause even the riff-stripping is perfect. Is there some kind of software that does this automatically or am I being thick? I know nothing of this world...

Super-Kate (kate), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 14:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I wish that everything made me nostalgically recall Granada Soccernight with Elton Welsby.

I have never seen it, in truth.

It's true, about the fool, and about it being praise. I might explain properly, one day, in a way.

While looking over the quiz sheets I was struck by what felt to me like the 'richness' of Boyle's life.

I am using the word 'rich' as TH used the word 'poor'. Or am I?

Something else that happened was a Carter USM top 5 contest, I mean, comparison.

It's a shame about the Railway Children.

the blissfox, Wednesday, 14 April 2004 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Happy Birthday Dave I am sorry that I missed it. I tried to go but I went to the wrong Castle, realised I was drunk and gave up.

Anyway I hope that you had a good time and ta for inviting me.

PM me sometime as although I'm hideously stressed at work I have missed your cheery messenger chats.

badger Kitten (badger Kitten), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 18:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, the Pinefox, I was asked by Tom to name my top 5 Carter songs, and his opinion of me obviously went down when I said that I could not even name a top 1.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 19:03 (twenty-one years ago)

the only title from that CD i KNOW i've heard is GHP's Rapture Riders and i only just heard that for the first time about an hour ago now - and jolly nice it was too. losing touch? me? what? anyway i'm intrigued and wouldn't mind hearing the rest.

So, OK, dumb question time, but what the heck do you use to strip the vocals/music out so perfectly? Cause even the riff-stripping is perfect. Is there some kind of software that does this automatically or am I being thick? I know nothing of this world...

if no acapella is already available (via CD/downloading) there is a way to isolate the vocal using software provided you have an instrumental version of the track to invert with the original, but when i tried it ages ago it didn't work - i didn't understand it then but i think i do now. my boss's boss was talking about a neat programme his mate uses to extract the vocals from songs so he can sing over them on his karaoke machine, but don't know the name.

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 19:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it's because nowadays recording and mixing is done on PCs, so getting a vocal track is just a matter of getting it via a nice/evil studio techie and a disc or net link.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 15 April 2004 08:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Artists have almost *always* made instrumental only tracks, for things like television performances and the like, so that the vocal can be added live to provide an illusion of a live performance, while not leaving the sound entirely up to the foibles of notoriously bad television studio sound. I thought maybe that sound-stripping technology might have improved to the point where the average person with a PC could do it...

how much does it cost to get from london stanstead to london city centre?

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 18:40 (twenty years ago)

About £15 last time I looked.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 18:43 (twenty years ago)

Lots of money if you go on the Stansted Express (£20 or so?). It's cheaper if you get the slow, regular service.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 18:43 (twenty years ago)

two months pass...
Revive!

It's my 31st birthday on Friday 8th April, and whilst no biggie like a 30th, it's still quite important to me nonetheless, being one of an ever decreasing number of such days.

I've booked the upstairs room at the Calthorpe Arms on Grays Inn Road, which is here>.

There's no fancy stuff involved, no quizzes or choon choosing like last year. Just a pub, a room, beer (Youngs, for those who care) and chat. Maybe a CD player, but I haven't been able to confirm it.

The Calthorpe is also very near the Pakenham Arms, where they serve booze until 1am, being a postie's pub. Alternatively, anyone suggesting indie dancing at the Borderline afterwards would be very bad indeed, but might be successful in luring mea few people there.

It's handily placed for transport, being 10 minutes from Kings Cross, and on bus routes taking you to London Bridge, Blackfriars and Waterloo East, so anyone concocting excuses will have to use better ones than 'I can't get home' afterwards. You might have to confess that you just don't like me. Anyone who would like to come is more than welcome to let me know in advance, which helps me decide whether we'll have enough people to open the upstairs bar.

Action starts at 6pm - hope to see you there and then. Feel free to bring friends, partners, lovers etc.

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 31 March 2005 11:25 (twenty years ago)

Oh alright then. This is my first Friday in my new job, so it might be an idea to go drinking with work people first, but its only round the corner, innit?

I might be Seal Clubbing as well but that might be a problem if I'm going to be drinking from 5.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 31 March 2005 12:28 (twenty years ago)

I have used the Sacred Power to put pub details in the title as well.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 31 March 2005 12:33 (twenty years ago)

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 31 March 2005 13:01 (twenty years ago)

I'll be there, for certain.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 31 March 2005 20:37 (twenty years ago)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 7 April 2005 21:05 (twenty years ago)

What time are people getting there? I am not working tomorrow so can choose my own time.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 7 April 2005 21:17 (twenty years ago)

I shall be there at 6, having advised this as the start time. Twould be rude not to really.

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 7 April 2005 21:23 (twenty years ago)

About 8 for me, I think. I may have new work drinks first and have to go home and sort out music for tonight as well.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 8 April 2005 07:33 (twenty years ago)

Augh Dave! You sneaked this in when I was in Scotland, so I didn't know and now I've not made you cake or nuffink! I feel TERRIBLE. Will try to pop in later though after giving my sister her Easter egg from our dad.

Adherents of the Repeated Kate (kate), Friday, 8 April 2005 09:13 (twenty years ago)

I am going to be there as early as possible. Stress over my travel arrangements is giving me the major thirsties.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 8 April 2005 09:27 (twenty years ago)

I shall be babysitting my own baby. I hope to dandle her on my knee as we both chuckle contentedly at The Two Ronnies Sketchbook. But I hope you have a happy birthday.

(You have surpassed yourself, Dadaismus.)

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 8 April 2005 14:14 (twenty years ago)

Thanks all for coming - I had a great time, and don't have a hangover. Thanks to Matt for Club Seal - that was good too, especially playing The Only Ones. No Tart Tart sob sob. Apols if I didn't speak to you as much as might have liked.

Dave B (daveb), Saturday, 9 April 2005 11:21 (twenty years ago)

Apologies for outrageous drunkenness after having demolished half a crate of free beer during my set. I don't actually remember playing The Only Ones at all.

We are taking Club Seal to the Shepherd's Bush Empire later in the month, which will be proper rocking. Downside = it is after an Embrace gig.
