gettin' fired

Well, I got the sack today from one of my crap part-time weekend uni jobs, after being informed that I was in fact a complete incompetent, and had single-handedly fucked up their pre-election sampling (I was doing phone-pestering for a large opinion polling agency).

So the question...which job were you worst at, and what's the best insult you've heard from an (ex) boss shortly before gettin' fired?

charles, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

...And this is the second job in a row I've been fired from (before crap polling there was the crap bakery). Trifecta by Christmas? Off to centrelink, methinks.

charles, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

sorry about your job charles. i have never been fired from a job. i was worst at my job at Joe's Vegie Stall in Oamaru. I could never work fast enuff. Mrs. Joe was always screaming at the employees for being too slow and incompetent. if you were especially slow, she would send you off to the glasshouses to pick tomatoes. the glasshouses which they would let their dogs into, who peed upon the tomatoes. and that was only Mrs. Joe. Mr. Joe was a disgusting old man who would constantly tell the female employees how much he'd love to see us working in bikinis. since i left that job, i make a point of telling everyone i know about the dog-piss-tomatoes.

di, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

only an intellectually dead sociopath would be COMPETENT at that kind of phone- pestering job, surely: being judged bad at it is a sign of yr being a good person

but: do good ppl get good jobs?

mark s, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well, I did sort of get fired from temping. I was doing boring data entry...but I noticed a distinct lack of morale amongst the work force, and a particularly unsupportive management structure (they made the workers lug their own computers from temporary offices to their newly built ones, after hours!)...so, a management consultant came in, he hated me, because I was telling people not to take this kind of hassle and to stand up to management. Basically, I let being a recent buisness business graduate go to my head...and wrote down loads of proposals, which were presented to the management (in hindsight - d'oh!)...So, the last Friday I was there, I was shifted to a dank corner...on the following Monday, I was told that my services were no longer required...(the manager got the temping agency to phone me, whilst I was in her office, they wouldn't talk to me at all!)

Now, I hate temping.

james, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

charels man congarts on fucking up their polling, anyi nsider gossip you can spread...i've always left my jobs, though was often threatened as a high school checkout chick for my muttonchops.

Geoff, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Temping is Satanic. For every £5 per hour given to you, the company is paying about £20 per hour to your agency. All you really are there to do is something so basic and shitty nobody with a proper contract can be bothered to do it anyway, so it is left until the problem reaches critical mass and the company is forced to hire a temp.

I would so not take it personally that you were sacked by your agency and not the 'employer'; technically, the agency is your employer and the call was theirs to make. And remember, you gained valuable insight and experience of having to engage with people you possibly wouldn't cross the street to piss on, were they on fire. Which is what I said to the last temp agent I worked for in college.

suzy, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Thanks Suzy, it's not like I'm having to venture into this world soon.

(Hopefully actually, Mr Branson's Entertainment Emporium will employ me)

Graham, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

go and ask pelicanneck if they will employ you first, or any of the shops on oldham st, you'll save your soul

Ed, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I just got fired from a small bakery/cafe for no good reason (well, they said the economy was slow). Thing is, I wasn't even the last hire- -nope, that would be the manager's boyfriend...how professional, rite? I got a new job almost immediatly though. Which is wierd considering the supposed 'slowness of economy'.

turner, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Charles, pretend you're someone else and apply for the same job. Wink at yer boss and say "I heard from Charles that he got fired. I am YOUR man, baby, take me ON!". Seriously, sorry to hear you got fired. I have never been fired. Two reasons: I take on jobs that are too easy (it makes me feel better) and secondly I normally walk out before they can fire me. Oh third reason: I know how to pretend I am good at my job.

helen fordsdale, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ed, I feel too ignorant even going into indie record shops.

Nope, bullshitting about which Eric Clapton album to get for someone's dad's brithday is very much my calling.

Graham, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

In my last job I was simply told "You don't have the skills we need, you're outta here." (Those were the exact words.) I was then left stranded in a remote cuntry (sic) town with not so much as a "Thank you" for the whole year and half I worked 60-100 hours per week, saving his $20million piece of overrated efficiency-software numerous times. That job almost sent me back to therapy.

I did tell the guy that 'rolled me off' (it's not called sacking anymore I think) that I thought he was a cunt, that he could shove his reference where the minions had been licking and that I hope he gets what is coming to him very soon. (Hence my email address.)

Oh, you might want to have a look at http://www.fuckedcompany.com - it's so good I bought the T-shirt and wore it on my last day in that job.

Mascara, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

ethan, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Geoff, surveying gossip: most of the people who would answer the questions were heavily sedated retirement village occupants; as a sample of our voting population it was ridiculously inadequate. My problem was reading the script out like a drone; I couldn't help (ahem) being creative. Anyone got any ideas about good (part-time) student jobs? All of them seem to suck...

charles, Monday, 22 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I don't like the idea of "student jobs" a job is a job is a job. Depending on what you are studying it is quite likely that your career will actually be in the industry that your so called "student job" is in, not in the field that you are studying. I think you should take your part-time working career just as seriously as your study.

By the way, what are you studying? Which city are you in too?

toraneko, Monday, 22 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I got fired from HMV after a customer pointed out that the price of a certain cd was more than it had been advertised as in the store, and I gave them a discount.

Apparently I was not supposed to do this without asking anyone. Oh, and I'd already accidently chucked a 10 quid record voucher in the bin.

I was quite glad actually since they were cunts who paid peanuts, and a week later I got a much better job.

Ally C, Monday, 22 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

two years pass...
I got fired from this fancy restaurant/lounge 2 nights ago for drinkin' on the job. totally sucks that i got caught.

I might be fired for trying to do my job properly soon. FUCKS.

adam. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 16:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Then again, maybe I'm paranoid.

adam. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 16:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I wish I could get a job to get fired! I was a waitress once, not very good at it. I was never fired, we just made a kind of mutual decision never to contact each other again. Beautiful.

Menelaus Darcy (Menelaus Darcy), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 16:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I wish I'd get sacked sometimes.

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 16:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm on the verge of getting fired, though. I've been saying that the entire time I've been working here (7 months).

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 16:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Isn't that terrible? I remember one job I had in which every day's drive to work took on the psychological character of a Gulag deathmarch.

x j e r e m y (x Jeremy), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 16:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah if my boss writes me an e-mail that says, "Please come see me when you have a chance," I usually announce to my officemate that I'm finally going to get fired and then I never do and I just ... well firstly it's bullshit that I'm always on my boss's radar, but whatever.. at this point I don't even care and although I secretly long to be 'let go' being fired would really be humiliating.

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 16:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I could see this happening today, maybe.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 16:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Stence, You should enjoy the job search more at work. You're getting paid to work elsewhere! It gives me a rush anyway. And I hate hate hate the job search process.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 16:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I would enjoy it more if I had more privacy here but I feel like everybody can see what I'm doing.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 17:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Ugh. That's the worst. People always come into my office and try to look over my shoulder. Why?! I'm just chatting to people on the internet. Sheesh. No respect.

dean? (deangulberry), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 17:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I know, I know, it could be worse. But it still sucks, and I need to get out of here.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 17:07 (twenty-one years ago)

three years pass...

Dear Livejournal,

Argh. It appears I might be fired this afternoon from my terrible restaurant job.

Asides from being incompetent, I was apparently supposed to work yesterday. This will be my second no call/no show in less than a month. Not because I’m disinterested but because I’m too absent minded to check the schedule.

I think they might keep me since they have a difficult time filling my position. If they do fire me I’m screwed as I have about 20 dollars in my bank account. Yikes!

Mr. Goodman, Friday, 2 November 2007 15:16 (eighteen years ago)

Dear Mr Goodman,

It is customary, when employed, to show up for work.

You're hired.

Well, I got fired. If anyone knows of a job that’s available in Boston ... let a brother know. Or I suppose I could start panhandling in Harvard Square.

Mr. Goodman, Friday, 2 November 2007 17:57 (eighteen years ago)

one year passes...

my boss has a habit of sending me emails on friday or so once every three months that basically read "you me and the co-owner need to meet at noon on monday" and then offer no additional info when I ask; so every three months I walk around going "am i fired?" and they generally suggest I start work on something that totally confounds me, I tackle it and then repeat.
But every time I spend three days walking around going "am i fired?" and i always feel like it's gonna be this time. And this is this time.

Morbs, you thought of a place for drinking this evening yet? I'll bring the McDonalds salad.

well, at least they didn't do it last Monday when I was on my "last vacation ever."

dunno yet ian, mayb the KY bar if I go out, i'll let you know.

I wonder if the freelancer who filled in for me for 3 days -- they had NEVER paid for that shit before -- convinced them I was dispensable?

Neotropical pygmy squirrel, Monday, 6 April 2009 22:21 (sixteen years ago)

thanks, NPS.

well, it appears that because I got 3 weeks' severance -- excuse me, SEPARATION -- I can't file for unemployment till I get that check on the 15th. So I just wasted 45 minutes filling out the goddamn online application.

Time to go to the movies.

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 7 April 2009 15:49 (sixteen years ago)

only 3 weeks?? haven't you worked there for a while?

The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Tuesday, 7 April 2009 16:15 (sixteen years ago)

4-1/2 years. That's pretty typical for US companies.

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 7 April 2009 16:51 (sixteen years ago)

shitty

The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Tuesday, 7 April 2009 17:25 (sixteen years ago)

so if my job is temporary (not through an agency, just came on as a non-perm employee) and is wrapping up soon, can i get unemployment?

yeah, i got the 'oh we need to start talking about references, prospects, and wrapping up your work for us' bit yesterday and now it's really hit me that i'm going to be unemployed soon :(

tehresa, Tuesday, 7 April 2009 18:22 (sixteen years ago)

don't know how it works outside of Ontario but here you have to have worked a minimum number of hours to qualify, I don't *think* it matters if your job was classified as permanent or not..?? G'luck!! :(

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Tuesday, 7 April 2009 18:25 (sixteen years ago)

You just have to have had wages in the "look back period" - even if you worked through a temp agency. They generally base your benefits on how much you made in that period.

tehresa, Tuesday, 7 April 2009 18:34 (sixteen years ago)

i think you're ok tza re: unemployment eligibility

also, companies aren't really obligated to give severance but 3 weeks for 4.5 years is super crappy, esp. in this job market. sorry, morbs : (

I dunno about ny, but in texas if your 'fired' (terminated with cause) no unemployment benefits for you! I hope you were laid off instead.

Anyway, if you do get unemployment benefits, Obama is giving you an extra $25 a week. Won't go far in the city, but it's still an Andy and an Abe.

Zero Transfats Waller (Oilyrags), Tuesday, 7 April 2009 18:51 (sixteen years ago)

two years pass...

God, no unemployment after being terminated at all: sends a message that the employer doing the firing is absolutely "right", even in the moral sense. You were "bad", be punished. It can be a death sentence these days, you lose your health care, lose your home!

Fog Fucking Hat (u s steel), Tuesday, 21 June 2011 11:13 (fourteen years ago)

btw, i did get fired from that job but it ended up being a good thing.

Don't start the chain you know? (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 21 June 2011 11:58 (fourteen years ago)

I got fired once but I never felt so relieved in all of my life. It was like "no disrespect, if you can stand this shithole you're welcome to it!" It didn't hurt that my mom won a settlement right after I left, so I had a year's salary or more to live off of.

Warner Bothers (u s steel), Tuesday, 21 June 2011 12:37 (fourteen years ago)

either going to get fired or resign, when shitty nazi boss rejoins our team next week. we'll see how we go.

Ste, Tuesday, 21 June 2011 12:40 (fourteen years ago)

^ same

line manager is ex city worker, small man syndrome, writes extremely aggressive long winded "official" emails asking me to only listen to my headphones during lunch hours and stuff like that. everyone listens to their headphones here.

current concern is my time management, i've been late a couple of days a week for the last few weeks. gf is going thru a horrendous grief process, things are a bit fucked up, tempted to just get signed off work for a couple of weeks.

anyway the annoying thing about all of this, is that i consistantly do about 5 times more work than anyone else. some aspects of the job are fairly mundane and i can kind of switch off and blast through my work at a ridiculous rate. this has saved our team from everyone doing lots of overtime on a number of occasions.

gah, anyway, feeling like you're about to get fired sucks. i'm sure things will sort themselves out.

Crackle Box, Tuesday, 21 June 2011 12:56 (fourteen years ago)

Don't know if I was on the verge of getting fired today, but I seem to have worked my boss's last nerve. :\

Leeena Dunham (Leee), Friday, 29 March 2013 02:36 (thirteen years ago)

First, he got annoyed when he wanted me to crunch some numbers and compare it against another set he gave me and I returned the results to him in a different order, then he gave me another job where I had to dig through the email to figure out what was being asked for, and when I said that it was as difficult for me to find that info as it was for him to check the numbers, he went off on me. (All this happened over email, so I'm not looking forward to sing him today.)

a few days before my 50th birthday i (and many others- this was not personal) was laid off from the company i had worked 14 years for.

i saw it coming (a year ago the UK based company was take over by some american investment fund - and we all know how thats going to fly !),
but still, having worked with the same crew for most of that time its a strange one when it actually happens.
i am now in a strange position where after 30 or so years doing software support/testing, i may never work again for a software company.
at 50, i am not sure i want to start all over again, learning a whole new software application and chancing my luck.
before this job i had worked for many other places, and hated virtually every single moment of my previous jobs due to the absolute shits i had to pretend to like.
instead i may just get a min wage at the pub to help pay the bills and live the small quiet life that i have always been heading towards.
but before i make that decision, i am going to kick back and enjoy the downtime.
i would suggest you do the same if at all possible Morbs.
3 weeks into my new life, and the house looks good, i have plans re the garden once spring arrives, and i really dont miss the sodding 2 hours a day commuting.

good luck whatever you decide to do Morbs ..
