Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 13 March 2004 03:19 (twenty-one years ago)

As a young boy MICHAEL SEMBELLO studied music with the same mystical awe and desire of a Zen monk. Instead of chanting sacred mantras for hours, or spending years trying to snatch a pebble from a masters' hand, his disciplines consisted of hours of intense "musical Vedas," and sacred scales, cosmic chords and flying feats of harmonic wonder that would have had the God Thor of Valhalla working up a big sweat.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Saturday, 13 March 2004 03:21 (twenty-one years ago)

You gotta love the Philosphy -- please look at the top of your browser window, my misspelling is intentional.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 13 March 2004 03:21 (twenty-one years ago)

We are not human beings having a spiritual experience.

We are spiritual beings having a human experience.

And here I thought we were all steeltown girls on a Saturday night.

“Singing Around the World in 80 Languages and Dialects” followed this undertaking.  Before the end of the decade, Michael was the first artist in history to sing in every possible language.

Making him the first man to suck in Klingon.

Superman.

as you stand at the edge of existence
and the world has forgotten your name
after life
after life you remember
the secret

he's as fast as a speeding bullet
change the water into wine
and the last time he came
they cursed his name
with a kryptonite cross they cut him down

superman
are we ever gonna see you again
if we do
will you teach us how to fly above the sky?

some say the end of the tunnel
there's a light that will show us the way
it's a light that belongs to the people
of every nation color or creed
i can't speak for all of the sinners
i don't know any saints i could ask
it's been two thousand years since we've seen him
we need you please come back

superman
are we ever gonna see you again
if we do
will you teach us how to fly above the sky?

all of the pain in your life
how can we every repay?
and the answer you sent
is in the life that you led
superman

superman
are we ever gonna see you again?
if we do
will you teach us how to fly above the sky?

Goddamn! Chaki you must lead us into mystic wonders. (Can you do a video where I come in halfway through and say 'In 2004 Chaki was going to put on a show when he MYSTERIOUSLY DISAPPEARED' and then I put on some sunglasses and call for a guy named Cecil?)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 13 March 2004 18:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Can we talk for a second about the lyrics to "Maniac"? Without really knowing anything about Michael Sembello yesterday, I guessed that he might be from Italy and that the language barrier would explain just how odd and beyond comprehensibility these lyrics are. But no, he's from Philly. THERE'S NO EXCUSE.

Just a steel town girl on a saturday night, lookin' for the fight of her life
In the real-time world no one sees her at all, they all say she's crazy

Locking rhythms to the beat of her heart, changing woman into life
She has danced into the danger zone, when a dancer becomes a dance

It can cut you like a knife, if the gift becomes the fire
On a wire between will and what will be

She's a maniac, maniac on the floor
And she's dancing like she's never danced before
She's a maniac, maniac on the floor
And she's dancing like she's never danced before

On the ice-build iron sanity is a place most never see
It's a hard warm place of mystery, touch it, but can't hold it
You work all your life for that moment in time, it could come or pass you by
It's a push of the world, but there's always a chance
If the hunger stays the night

There's a cold connective heat, struggling, stretching for defeat
Never stopping with her head against the wind

She's a maniac, maniac, I sure know
And she's dancing like she's never danced before
She's a maniac, maniac, I sure know
And she's dancing like she's never danced before

(Solo)

It can cut you like a knife, if the gift becomes the fire
On a wire between will and what will be

She's a maniac, maniac, I sure know
And she's dancing like she's never danced before
(repeats out)

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 13 March 2004 18:51 (twenty-one years ago)

C'mon, what's not to get about 'cold connective heat?' He's just slicing up eyeballs, wah-hah-hah-ho.

If there was only one album to sum up the spirit and vibe of the whole Southern California FM laid back experience - this album captures it bottom line. Excellent website and hope to see you giggin' around L.A soon.

Hey, Michael,

I wonder if you would allow me to cut your song 'Maniac'. I'm producing the legendary Flip Wilson & he wants to do this song with his 'Geraldine' character for his new dance cd. She has a thing with water & welding & some other issues I'm not privy to at the moment. but, you know that this means a sincere performance, just as it was written, a steamy jacuzzi reading per se.
I have the charts worked out, which I can forward to you (one note at a time) & you are certainly welcome to play (replay, fly in) the solo gtr on this recording. (Logic Multi-paltinum 9.44.01 preferred for Linux)
This is a great opportunity, being Flip's swan song & telling (all)at that. He wants to go 'out' on this, your note, & I can't agree more!
Do not dilly dally or even dilly Dolly with Geraldine! Time is of the essence.

crate diggers take note: there are at least TWO different record covers of sembello's epochal _bossa nova hotel_. the first (and i'm guessing original) looks like this:

http://www.bluedesert.dk/cd3cm/sembello/bossa.JPG

that's michael behind the desk on the right in black/white face reading a godzilla comic. then there are two oiled-up pieces of beefcake rising off the floor (?), a dark one in a speedo with a huge shiny log-chain around his neck (??), the blond one in a sumo-diaper thing and what looks like christ's spear wound on his ribs (???). michael is on the back side in white shorts similarly floating off the floor with two suitcases.

the second (i'm guessing, for gay-squeaming audiences) puts the floating-suitcase michael on the front cover, and EXCISES COMPLETELY the stigmata-chain-diaper-south-beach-titty-tan-angels. so don't get that one!

what the?

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 26 May 2005 19:38 (twenty years ago)

the movie linked to seems like it's gotta be a comedy... like there's even jokes and stuff in it! but the rest of the site, and people's reactions on this thread, make it seem totally serious. so i am confused.

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 26 May 2005 19:39 (twenty years ago)

i think the movie WANTS to be humorous, but it's unironic in ways perhaps sembello and howard don't even realize.

In retrospect I appreciate how Ron Howard's bit with the sunglasses is a tribute to David Caruso before his time.

New website.

He has apparently recovered his sanity -- although the list of recent production credits suggests he never truly lost it.

And I have to confess I really like the smooth-jazz version of "Maniac" that auto-plays.

As a kid, I had this generic "BMX Freestyle" VHS in addition to various contests and BMX Plus! and Team HARO and the like. Most of the footage was old and corny by the time I picked it up in the early 90s. But sometimes, 25 years later, I'd still find myself with the corny-ass songs stuck in my head. Finally stumbled on it on youtube the other day and whaddaya know? Michael Sembello!
