Chiklis is the Durst to my Miccio.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Sunday, 14 March 2004 23:25 (twenty-one years ago)

down with chiklis

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 15 March 2004 00:07 (twenty-one years ago)

that bruce willis manqué

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 15 March 2004 00:07 (twenty-one years ago)

wtf??

the guy has been blacklisted by most hollywood types since he took the John Belushi role in the movie Wired, so no big secret about the guy not being liked.. but did I miss something re: Ned vs. Chiklis?

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 15 March 2004 00:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Here's something I've never gotten over: Chiklis was something like 28 Years Old when he was on The Commish!

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 15 March 2004 00:26 (twenty-one years ago)

did I miss something re: Ned vs. Chiklis?

I think I missed it too.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 15 March 2004 00:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyway, the only logical response.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 15 March 2004 00:30 (twenty-one years ago)

he was blacklisted for that? really? tell me more tell me more

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 15 March 2004 00:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I just thought Ned had a particular aversion to the poise of Chiklis and the general greatness of The Shield.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 15 March 2004 00:35 (twenty-one years ago)

*thinks* Oh right, I recall mocking a billboard in your presence. Let's face it, it looked silly.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 15 March 2004 00:36 (twenty-one years ago)

silly as in excellent?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 15 March 2004 00:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I love you.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 15 March 2004 00:39 (twenty-one years ago)

"you" as in "Chiklis"?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 15 March 2004 00:41 (twenty-one years ago)

This was a general expression of appreciation to the Formless Void.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 15 March 2004 00:43 (twenty-one years ago)

There wasn't any official blacklisting, but let's face it.. at the timed Wired came out, Dan Ackroyd and many who were close to Belushi were in prominent positions in the Hollywood scene, so surely Chiklis screwed himself out of a "legit" Hollywood career by taking a role in a movie that portrayed a Hollywood legend allegedly unfairly. But whatever.

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 15 March 2004 00:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Dan Ackroyd and many who were close to Belushi were in prominent positions in the Hollywood scene

This is the same Dan Ackroyd who at the time was starring in My Stepmother is an Alien and two years away from Nothing But Trouble = Chiklis had nothing to fear.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 15 March 2004 00:50 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe they just blacklisted him because he suuuuuuuuuuuucks.

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 15 March 2004 01:14 (twenty-one years ago)

boo!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 15 March 2004 03:08 (twenty-one years ago)

this is the weirdest thread I've seen tonight. and they all seem really weird and foreign to me. I've never watched the Shield, even though I think I'd like it a lot. I don't think I'd like myself for liking it, is all.

Huck, Monday, 15 March 2004 04:35 (twenty-one years ago)

and by "foreign" you mean what?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 15 March 2004 04:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I hate that chiklis guy!

Foreign like Lou Gramm.

Huck, Monday, 15 March 2004 04:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh oh oh has anyone been watching the new season of The Shield? Don't spoil it, but is it good? Will you tape it for me?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 20:48 (twenty-one years ago)

i think about this thread every time i see a commercial for the sheild during law & order.

Juuuust look at his face.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 20:52 (twenty-one years ago)

i think about this thread every time i see a commercial for the sheild during law & order.

Me too. I liked the one where they showed him getting beat up, it was almost enough to make me want to watch the show.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 20:54 (twenty-one years ago)

his tie doesn't go with his shirt. i bet he likes ribs

xpost:wait he gets beat up? where?

kephm, Tuesday, 23 March 2004 20:54 (twenty-one years ago)

There was a commercial for the Shield where he was getting beat up, it was excellent.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 20:55 (twenty-one years ago)

will you tape it for me?

kephm, Tuesday, 23 March 2004 20:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Imagine Chiklis dancing to Fischerspooner. That would be great.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 20:56 (twenty-one years ago)

There's something quite gay about The Shield, don't you think? I wonder if it has a large gay audience.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 30 April 2004 17:35 (twenty-one years ago)

You know that Clark Johnson directs The Shield sometimes. He's Canadian. He's one of my favourite actors. I've met his sister.

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Friday, 30 April 2004 17:37 (twenty-one years ago)

that's right, bunk.

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Friday, 30 April 2004 17:46 (twenty-one years ago)

@d@m, have you seen Homicide: Life on the Street? Because you will flip when you do.

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 30 April 2004 17:52 (twenty-one years ago)

and by "flip" I mean "flip out with joy". There was no sexual implication in my use of the word.

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 30 April 2004 17:52 (twenty-one years ago)

also, if you like H:LOTS, you have to read Gotham Central.

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Friday, 30 April 2004 17:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, you should rent The Wire on DVD, at least the first season is out, maybe the second?

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 30 April 2004 17:54 (twenty-one years ago)

have you seen The Corner, kyle?

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Friday, 30 April 2004 17:55 (twenty-one years ago)

No, I missed it, and haven't gotten around the renting it yet. I kind of wanted to read the book first but haven't been in the mood to depress the fuck out of myself.

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 30 April 2004 17:56 (twenty-one years ago)

there are no good rental places here, so if I wanna see it, I pretty much have to buy it, so I was wondering if I should.

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Friday, 30 April 2004 17:57 (twenty-one years ago)

the Corner? it's a one-dvd deal, I think, so it's probably cheap. It was apparently good, but not homicide/wire good.

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 30 April 2004 18:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I haven't seen Homicide, but the reasons I love The Shield are these:

1)It is trashy and (slightly) dumb.
2) It is set in LA (I have a fetish for James Ellroy and Bukowski and so on, so this side of this city is particularly appealing.

Does Homicide fit either of these criteria? It looks "intelligent". Also, it is the spawn of Mamet, is it not?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 30 April 2004 18:09 (twenty-one years ago)

The Shield is like Van Damme meets Cypress Hill on the rotten streets of the city of angels.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 30 April 2004 18:10 (twenty-one years ago)

No, wrong Homicide; there is a Mamet film called Homicide, but Homicide:Life on the Streets was written by David Simon and based on actual police cases (originally; it moved away from this) and actual police. It was produced by Barry Levinson and Tom Fontana (who went on to make Oz for HBO). It isn't trashy or dumb, it is smart, but you would love it. It's set in Baltimore; this, Oz, and the Wire form a kind of trilogy of interconnected series about crime in Baltimore. They're all GREAT. Even the maligned final seasons of Homicide (which were kind of trashy and dumb) are great.

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 30 April 2004 18:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I like the Al Bundy Dragnet show.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 30 April 2004 18:18 (twenty-one years ago)

you would like Oz. There is a lot of prisoner anal rape goin' on.

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 30 April 2004 18:19 (twenty-one years ago)

whatthefuckareyousaying???

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 30 April 2004 18:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Even the maligned final seasons of Homicide (which were kind of trashy and dumb) are great.

The biggest problem with the last few seasons is that the actors started to get good-looking. The first few seasons are an exercise in ugliness, and I mean that as a great thing.
Yaphet Kotto, Ned Beatty, Richard Blezer, Jon Polito, Daniel Baldwin, not yr average leading men.

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Friday, 30 April 2004 18:21 (twenty-one years ago)

you should really watch homicide adam! clean that chiklis right outta your system.

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 30 April 2004 18:22 (twenty-one years ago)

chiklis is a plague.. worst dome in the business

cutty (mcutt), Friday, 30 April 2004 18:27 (twenty-one years ago)

he looks like he should have a little elmer fudd voice. in fact, he should play Elmer Fudd should they ever do a live action Looney Tunes film.

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 30 April 2004 18:28 (twenty-one years ago)

clean that chiklis right outta your system.

NO

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 30 April 2004 18:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Seriously, Adam, get yourself a good dose of Bolander & Munch and you'll be like, "Chiklis? More like ChikLESS!"

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Friday, 30 April 2004 18:31 (twenty-one years ago)

B......Bolander & Munch? Hahahaha! Sounds like a textbook publisher. As I said above, Chiklis is not the only reason to watch The Shield. There are many fine and well-cast actors.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 30 April 2004 18:33 (twenty-one years ago)

but you stay for the chiklis.

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 30 April 2004 18:34 (twenty-one years ago)

!!!lis

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 30 April 2004 18:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Det. John Munch: Homicide: our day begins when yours ends.

Det. Stan Bolander: It's hard to meet single woman on this job. You meet plenty of widows, but
the timing just don't seem right.

Cox: Don't you even wonder why?
Munch: Why what?
Cox: Why he lied.
Munch: I'm a homicide detective. The only time I wonder why is when they tell me the truth.

Det. John Munch: [looking at corpse] With those beady eye and that mustache he looks like a
cross between Steve Buscemi, John Waters and Edgar Allen Poe.
Det. Michael Scott 'Mike' Kellerman: Aren't they all the same person?

Det. Stanley "Stan" Bolander: How come every time I open that refrigerator, there's one drop of
milk left in the carton? So who has to go to the 7-11 and replace the carton of milk?
Det. John Munch: Me.
Det. Stanley "Stan" Bolander: That's besides the point. He's doing that on my behalf. He could
be doing something else for me.

Det. John Munch: Name one miracle that's happened in your lifetime.
Det. Stanley "Stan" Bolander: How 'bout the fact that I haven't killed you yet?

Det. John Munch: The only thing I have in common with Judaism is we both don't like to work
on Saturdays.

FX sets precedent by picking up police drama The Shield for fourth season
NEW YORK (AP) — Michael Chiklis is hitting the streets again next season now that FX has picked up The Shield for a fourth season.
The renewal marks the first time the cable channel has brought back any of its original series for a fourth season. Fifteen new episodes of the graphic police drama are scheduled to begin airing in early 2005.
“This year’s arc of episodes is not only the strongest yet, but as good a season of television as I’ve seen during my entire career,” FX entertainment president John Landgraf said Monday.
“We can’t wait to see what they come up with next year.”
Chiklis was a surprise best-actor Emmy winner in 2002 for playing rule-breaking Los Angeles police detective Vic Mackey.
The Shield has been a critical favourite and has developed a strong fan following, even though it airs on basic cable because of its violence and strong language.
The show’s 40-year-old star made his directing debut with the episode airing Tuesday night. Writer-director David Mamet (Glengarry Glen Ross) directed the May 18 episode, his first time directing series television.

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 17:42 (twenty-one years ago)

FUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Amazing. Thank you god.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 17:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Time to get serious with that Shield spec script I keep promising.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 17:49 (twenty-one years ago)

If they'll take one from Mamet, you've got even odds!

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 17:49 (twenty-one years ago)

My thoughts exactly.

Actually, I would like Mamet to keep his stoopid writing hands away from my beloved Shield. He can direct, but that's all.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 17:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I really should try to watch this show sometime. Everything about it indicates that I would love it. Maybe that's what I'm afraid of. I've been hurt by TV before.

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 17:53 (twenty-one years ago)

how many seasons of this are there on dvd?

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 17:54 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, both seasons are except for the current one. thank you amazon.

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 17:55 (twenty-one years ago)

how come God and Amazon have both been thanked on this thread today but not me? What the fuck is up with that?

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 18:00 (twenty-one years ago)

thanks Huck.

Okay, if I am lucky w/Bittorrent, I will wake up tomorrow to another sunny Northern Californian daybreak, fix myself a cup of coffee and lie around in my underwear watching episode 9. Delaying the start of a new job has never been so sweeet.

g--ff (gcannon), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 02:09 (twenty-one years ago)

The ending to that last episode was WEAK. Let's hope it was a one-off.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 20 May 2004 18:26 (twenty-one years ago)

was that the mamet episode?

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 20 May 2004 18:53 (twenty-one years ago)

or the marmot episode?

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Thursday, 20 May 2004 18:53 (twenty-one years ago)

No, it was the one AFTER the Mamet episode. That one was actually pretty good.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 20 May 2004 19:05 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah I hated that ending. It made no sense at all, and I hope it doesn't mean that "oh shit, now he's a mad killer". Actually that was one of the more bullshit "shockers" I've seen. The Shield generally doesn't handle those well at all.

Gear! (Gear!), Thursday, 20 May 2004 19:08 (twenty-one years ago)

OMG someone else on ILX is actually watching! Pat yourself on the back, Gear!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 20 May 2004 19:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I felt sorry for the kitty.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 20 May 2004 19:09 (twenty-one years ago)

right after 24 I take it to da FX

Gear! (Gear!), Thursday, 20 May 2004 19:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean for one thing it didn't show that the Cuddler was any kind of mindfucker or that what's his face was anything other than a little confused in trying to figure out his motive.

Gear! (Gear!), Thursday, 20 May 2004 19:11 (twenty-one years ago)

for comparison the whole REAL last episode of "Homicide" where it's implied Bayliss went out of bounds and killed someone vigilante-style was better and more disturbing despite being less inherently shocking.

Gear! (Gear!), Thursday, 20 May 2004 19:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I think that Holland "Dutch" Wagonbach was stymied for once that he could not get into the mind of a suspect, so much so that he needed to strangle the kitty almost in empathy with the Cuddler. At least that's what they were going for.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 20 May 2004 19:14 (twenty-one years ago)

if he starts cuddling and killing old hoes I'm bailing on that show

Gear! (Gear!), Thursday, 20 May 2004 19:14 (twenty-one years ago)

haha!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 20 May 2004 19:15 (twenty-one years ago)

actually if the show completely derails and every single character starts doing that I'd stick around

Gear! (Gear!), Thursday, 20 May 2004 19:15 (twenty-one years ago)

He won't. He just needs to crack another case "his way", and he'll be right as rain.

Strange ending, yeah. I couldn't see him going that far to figure out a motive, but clearly the show knows itself better I do.

Vinnie (vprabhu), Thursday, 20 May 2004 19:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I loved the way the last REAL episode of Homicide paralled the first episode. Baylis with his pen set, Lewis repeating Crosetti's lines.

No comments about last night's Shield finale? Loved the tension in that final scene with Lem and Shane and Vic. Also, Andre 3000 with a hose!

'Fantastic Four' Cast Announcement Approaching

The full cast of anticipated movie The Fantastic Four is expected to be announced next week, with actor Michael Chiklis remaining as favorite for the role of The Thing. The movie, which follows the exploits of mutant astronauts Reed Richards, Susan Storm Richards, Benjamin Grimm and Johnny Storm, better known as Mr. Fantastic, the Invisible Woman, The Thing and the Human Torch - will begin filming in August). Producer Avi Arad, who will bring the Marvel Comics favorites to the big screen, is expected to make the public announcement about the movie, which will be helmed by Barbershop director Tim Story. Fantastic Four creator Stan Lee says, "Chiklis is tough and rugged, yet he has a likable quality - and that's The Thing." Mean Girls star Rachel McAdams is emerging as a likely choice to play Sue Storm. Arad hints, "She's be great. We like her a lot."

Should I catch up on the last 3-4 months of Gotham Central? I now work close to a comic store again and walked around on my lunch break holding them all and then put them back.

adam... (nordicskilla), Thursday, 28 October 2004 14:24 (twenty-one years ago)

The the Mad Hatter storyline is pretty cool. I think it's called "Unresolved" and ran 4 issues. "Corrigan" the two-parter that just wrapped is okay, but it sort of assumes that you care about the characters, and borrows heavily, dialogue-wise from Homicide, lotsa "bunk" and "put me in the box" and "so the bear says to the guy..."
I've finally decided that I like Ed Brubaker a lot more than I like Greg Rucka, but I still like Rucka a bunch and I really like Michael Lark. But Brubaker's arcs kick ass. Maybe it's cuz he's not writing as many other things as Rucka is.

Huk-L, Thursday, 28 October 2004 14:46 (twenty-one years ago)

lotsa "bunk" and "put me in the box" and "so the bear says to the guy..."

????

What's the best comic book currently being published, IYHO?

adam... (nordicskilla), Thursday, 28 October 2004 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)

lotsa "bunk" and "put me in the box" and "so the bear says to the guy..." Maybe that stuff didn't come up until the 4th Season of Homicide.

IMHO, uh, except for the lame reveal in the newest issue, the Flash is as good as DC superhero action gets. Geoff Johns (the writer) really seems to have knack for making the most of continuity while still moving plots forward. His JSA stuff is dizzying for how well he juggles such a large cast and loaded history, but almost too much so, like you can see the craft a little too plainly, if that makes any sense. THe first issue of his Green Lantern: Rebirth is nerd heaven though.
I'm really enjoying the Bendis/Maleev Daredevil trades that I've been slowly amassing (i've got two) since you recommended them. Also, the early Powers seesm to be pretty great (also written by Bendis).
But to recommend just one book, I'd go with the Flash, current issue aside. Well, it's still really good, it's just that the big secret didn't live up to the tension that was so expertly cranked up last issue.

BRING IT ON

That one guy that quit, Monday, 2 April 2007 16:36 (eighteen years ago)

"I'm a great consumer of Wong Kar Wai, Hou Hsiao-hsien, Arnaud Desplechin, and David Lynch, but above all I hope there's something of the influence [in Private Fears in Public Places] of Kim Manners. He directed some 50 episodes of The X Files, and the virtuosity of his shot-breakdown technique and of his mise-en-scene, and the way in which he treated actors' performances, all of it impressed me. He's the best of the best. I'm not an expert in television series, but in Millennium, The Shield, The Sopranos, 24, and others, I find the cinematic syntax more rich and inventive than in the majority of cinema."

This might be the strangest reason I've ever heard for someone going bald.

From Wikipedia:

At age 20, Chiklis shaved his head to look like male-pattern baldness for the part of a 65-year-old man in You Can't Take It With You. Instead of using powder on his head (as he did on his face), he used greasepaint, and he failed to remove it properly at the end of each day. This killed the hair follicles on his head, essentially shaping his career in many ways.
